The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in the bacterial community in sugarcane silage, in distinct soil types along the storage period. We depicted the bacterial community associated with sugarcane, before and after ensiling, through a massive sequencing of the gene 16S rRNA using MiSeq platform. The ensilage process shifted the composition of the bacterial community from the heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria Leuconostoc to bacteria belonging to the genera Acinetobacter, Ralstonia and Novosphingobium. However, this shift did not convey statically significant differences in alfa diversity metrics. In addition, similarity percentage analysis showed that the bacterial Operational Taxonomic Units that were primarily responsible for the observed differences were Leuconostoc, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Ralstonia, Fructobacillus, Novosphingobium, Lactobacillus, Burkholderia and Clostridium sensu stricto 1. The storage period was the most important factor responsible for changes in the bacterial community of silages. Results confirmed that the type of soil did not influence the dissimilarity found among samples.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic (Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079) supplementation during feedlot adaptation period on performance of Nellore bulls. One-hundred ninety-eight Nellore bulls were used in a completely randomized block design, divided in 22 pens (9 animals/pen). Treatments were: CON – adaptation diet and finishing diet comprised of basal diet (with 28 ppm of monensin); and SCB – same diets as for the previous treatment with monensin plus probiotic (Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079, ProTernative® 20; Lallemand Animal Nutrition at a dose of 1.0 x 10e10 cfu/animal/d) supplementation. Supplementation was offered for the first 42 days (21 days in the step-up phase and 21 days in the finishing diet with 900 g concentrate/kg DM), then both treatments were fed the same basal diet for another 76d, reaching 118 days in total. Pen was considered the experimental unit and data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS with Tukey test at 5% significance level. Final carcass weight was 1.69% greater for animals fed SCB (283.8 vs. 288.7 kg, P = 0.04). Total carcass weight gain (111.0 vs. 114.8 kg) and daily carcass weight gain (0.924 vs. 0.956 kg) tended (P = 0.06) to increase by 3.46% in SCB-fed animals compared to the CON ones. Gain yield (P = 0.39), biological efficiency (P = 0.35) and carcass yield (P = 0.71) did not differ between treatments. Probiotic supplementation with live yeast during the first 42 days in feedlot helped Nellore bulls optimize early on growth performance with an interesting carry-over effect on carcass gain through the total feedlot time.

During the first 42 days, average DMI did not differ; however, bulls fed SCB plateaued the curve of at 9.17 kg DMI/d earlier (39 days, R2 = 0.97) than those fed CON (43 days; R2 = 0.96) diets. Final body weight (509.5 vs. 518.0 kg, P = 0.02), total body weight gain (163.7 vs. 170.3 kg, P = 0.01) and average body weight daily gain (1.366 vs. 1.420 kg, P = 0.01) were greater for SCB-fed bulls. Feed efficiency of SCB-supplemented bulls was 8.05% greater than CON (P = 0.04). Probiotic supplementation with live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 during the first 42 days in feedlot contributes to reaching the plateau of DMI curve earlier and improving overall performance of Nellore bulls during the total period.

The main objective of this study was to describe the occurrence of VOC in sugarcane silages. Thirty-three samples of sugarcane silage were collected from farm-scale ( n = 25) and laboratory-scale silos ( n = 8). From the total, 11 silages were prepared without additives, 17 were treated with sodium benzoate and 5 were inoculated with Lactobacillus buchneri . Water extracts were prepared and analyzed for 18 fermentation end-products using HPLC and special GC techniques. The functional relationships among the fermentation end-products were established using principal component analysis. In addition to high contents of ethanol, acetic acid, and lactic acid, significant concentrations of 1,2-propanediol, ethyl lactate, acetone, 2,3-butanediol, propionic acid, n-butyric acid, ethyl acetate, 2-butanol, methanol, propanol, and iso-butyric acid were found. Ethanol was negatively associated with acetic acid and 2,3-butanediol but positively correlated with lactic acid and esters. Dry matter content determined by oven drying (DMoven) and ethanol concentration explained 0.98 of the variation in the dry matter content corrected for volatile compounds [DMcorr (g/kg as fed) = 42.81 + 0.916 × DMoven (g/kg as fed) + 0.141 × Ethanol (g/kg DMoven)], because silages with high contents of ethanol frequently also contained significant amounts of other volatile substances.

A statistical analysis of data from published studies was conducted to evaluate the effect of the addition of lime to fresh sugarcane in terms of its chemical composition, digestibility, and animal performance. A data set that included 55 treatment means from 20 refereed journal articles was collected and analyzed using a mixed model regression analysis with a random study effect. Lime addition directly increased dry matter (DM), ash, and Ca contents, as well as Ca:P ratio, and lowered organic matter (OM) concentration. The alkaline nature of lime linearly raised the sugarcane pH. Conversely, the concentration of nonfiber carbohydrates (NFC) was quadratically reduced by lime addition, whereas there was a quadratic increase in the neutral detergent fiber (NDFall), indigestible neutral detergent fiber (iNDF), and lignin (sa) and a linear increase in potentially digestible neutral detergent fiber (g/kg OM). The proportion of hemicellulose in the NDFall was unchanged by lime addition; thus, net fiber hydrolysis was not observed. The only beneficial effect of lime on the chemical composition of sugarcane was a linear decrease in the iNDF:NDFall ratio. The addition of lime to sugarcane did not affect DM intake or chewing behavior, although it increased the intake of NDFall. However, the mean NDFall intake was 0.87 kg/100 kg body weight, which is markedly lower than the reported value for traditional forages (1.00–1.20 kg/100 kg body weight). Indeed, NDFall digestibility was quadratically improved, but it was not enough to offset the loss of NFC across air exposure which, in turn, led to a linear decrease in the diet DM digestibility. Thus, lime treatment linearly decreased the average daily gain. It was concluded that lime increased fiber digestibility, but this effect did not offset the loss of water soluble carbohydrates, leading to a lower nutritive value of fresh sugarcane and a decrease in animal performance.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate whether fermentation end products in silage affect intake and digestion in beef cattle. Six rumen-cannulated Nellore steers were randomly assigned to a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 14-d periods. Each period consisted of 9 d for adaptation and 5 d for sample collection. Steers were housed in a tie-stall barn and individually fed once daily at 0800 h. The dietary treatments in Exp. 1 were as follows: 60% corn silage plus 40% concentrate (CON), 60% corn silage with added ethanol (2.8% on a DM basis) and 40% concentrate (ET), and 60% corn silage with added lactic acid (5.4% on a DM basis) and 40% concentrate (LA). The DMI was similar (P = 0.41) across treatments (average 11.7 kg/d); however, the LA treatment increased the ruminal pH (P = 0.01) and decreased the acetate:propionate ratio (P < 0.01). Diet digestibility decreased by 2.2 to 2.5 percentage units when the DM content was determined by oven drying (at 105°C) rather than by toluene distillation. The treatments in Exp. 2 were as follows: 75% sugarcane silage with no volatile fraction (oven dried at 60°C and rehydrated) and 25% concentrate (75D), 75% sugarcane silage (original moisture content) and 25% concentrate (75W), and 40% sugarcane silage and 60% concentrate (40W). Approximately 21% of the DM content of sugarcane silage consisted of volatile compounds. The presence of these compounds did not alter the DMI (P = 0.36) but did increase both the acetate:propionate ratio (P < 0.01) and the fractional absorption rates of valerate (P < 0.01) and ethanol (P = 0.02) in the empty reticulorumen. The 40W diet led to a greater DMI (40W = 9.79 vs. 75W = 6.19 kg/d; P < 0.01), which altered most of the measured variables traditionally associated with high-concentrate diets. As in Exp. 1, diet digestibility decreased by 1.5 to 5.4 units when the DM content was determined by oven drying at 105°C rather than by toluene distillation. In this short-term study, volatile compounds did not inhibit the DMI or the digestion process of the animals. On the contrary, volatile compounds contributed to the energy content of the silage, composing up to 10% of the energy value as determined by digestibility. Due to the short experimental periods, the results from this study should be interpreted with caution.

The objectives of this study were to determine the proportion of indigestible neutral detergent fibre (iNDF) in the neutral detergent fibre (NDF) fraction of sugarcane, to estimate changes in NDF digestibility (NDFD) during the harvesting window and to predict sugarcane digestibility based on its fibre fractions. Whole plants of the IAC86-2480 and IAC93-3046 varieties were collected during the harvesting windows in 2007 and 2009, respectively. The in vitro true dry matter digestibility (IVTDMD) and fibre contents (NDF, iNDF, acid detergent fibre) were determined by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). The NDFD and potentially digestible NDF digestibility (pdNDFD) were estimated, and the fractional digestion rate of pdNDF was calculated. There was no relationship between growing days and iNDF as a proportion of NDF (P = 0·28) or with the fractional digestion rate of pdNDF (P = 0·30). Therefore, NDFD (mean = 335 g kg−1) and pdNDFD (mean = 657 g kg−1) remained almost constant during the harvesting window (P = 0·70 and P = 0·32 respectively). Acid detergent fibre and NDF were the best predictors of sugarcane dry matter (DM) digestibility. In conclusion, NDFD seems to be unchanged during crop growth. The point at which to harvest sugarcane as a forage source should therefore be decided based on NDF concentration, which is greatly influenced by sucrose accumulation.

The objectives of this study were to determine the range of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility across sugarcane varieties and predict dry-matter (DM) and NDF digestibility based on morphological and chemical composition. Whole plants of thirty-two commercial varieties were collected after 12 months regrowth (second cut) and evaluated for morphological traits, chemical composition, in situ digestibility of NDF (NDFD) and of DM (DMD), in vitro NDFD (IVNDFD) and gas production dynamics from isolated NDF. The content of NDF ranged from 404 to 547 g kg−1 DM, DMD was between 593 and 739 g kg−1 and NDFD varied from 270 to 363 g kg−1. Cluster and discriminant analyses for NDFD agglomerated sugarcane genotypes into three groups (high, medium and low NDFD). The contents of NDF and lignin were the best univariate predictors of sugarcane DMD and NDFD respectively. Therefore, associating NDF and lignin improved the accuracy of DMD prediction. Associating lignin concentration with the number of dry leaves and stalk length significantly improved the goodness of fit of NDFD prediction. Contrary to expectations, silicon concentration was not related to NDFD. The principal component analysis patterned the content of neutral detergent solubles, NDFD and variables related to DM yield in different components. Hence, these characteristics would coexist in the same variety. Based on Lucas test and kinetics of gas production from NDF, sugarcane potentially digestible NDF (pdNDF) can be considered almost uniform (pdNDF digestibility = 677 g kg−1). In conclusion, associating chemical composition and morphological traits can successfully improve the screening of sugarcane genotypes for animal nutrition.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of covering methods on the nutritive value of corn silage and performance of dairy cows. Whole-plant corn was harvested at 340 g/kg of dry matter (DM) and ensiled for 135 d in horizontal silos covered with one of the following methods: oxygen barrier film (45-µm thick) + white-on-black polyethylene film (200-µm thick) over the oxygen barrier film (OB+WB); white-on-black polyethylene film (200-µm thick) (WB); black polyethylene film (200-µm thick) (B); or recycled black polyethylene film (200-µm thick) covered with a layer of 10 cm of sugarcane bagasse (RB+SB). Nutrient composition, fermentation profile, and yeast and mold counts in edible silages were similar across treatments. Silage temperature during the storage period was 24.6, 28.7, 28.4 and 33.1 °C for RB+SB, OB+WB, WB and B, respectively, and the proportion of spoiled silage ranged from 28.7 (for the RB+SB treatment) to 74.2 g/kg DM (for the B treatment). Dry matter intake was similar across treatments and averaged 21.9 kg/d. Milk production was higher for cows fed corn silage covered with RB+SB (34.4 kg/d) compared with those fed corn silage covered with B (30.4 kg/d), resulting in higher feed efficiency for RB+SB treatment. Silages covered with OB+WB and WB had intermediate values. In vivo digestibility of organic matter was higher for cows fed corn silage covered with RB+SB compared with those fed corn silage covered with WB and B, but were similar to those fed corn silage covered with OB+WB. The utilization of oxygen barrier films and the protection of polyethylene film with sugarcane bagasse are effective strategies to increase the recovery of digestible nutrients and, consequently, to enhance production efficiency of lactating dairy cows.

Summary Whole oilseeds such as soya beans have been utilized in dairy rations to supply additional fat and protein. However, antinutritional components contained in soya beans, such as trypsin inhibitors and haemagglutinins (lectins) may alter digestibility of nutrients and consequently affect animal performance. The objective of the present experiment was to quantify the effect of different levels of whole raw soya beans in diets of dairy cows on nutrient intake, total tract digestion, nutrient balances and milk yield and composition. Sixteen mid to late-lactation cows (228 ± 20 days in milk; mean ± SD) were used in four replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with 21-d periods. Cows were assigned to each square according to milk yield and DIM. The animals were randomly allocated to treatments: control (without soya beans addition; CO), WS9, WS18 and WS27, with addition of 9%, 18% and 27% of whole raw soya bean in diet on a dry matter (DM) basis respectively. All diets contained identical forage and concentrate components and consisted of maize silage and concentrate based on ground corn and soya beans at a ratio of 60:40. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 3 × 5, com três teores de matéria seca (obtidos com adição de polpa cítrica (PCP) ou casca de soja (CSP), ambas peletizadas, em comparação à ausência de aditivos) e cinco aditivos (ausência ou presença de inoculante bacteriano, benzoato de sódio ou ácido fórmico 62% ou 44%). O arranjo resultou em 15 silagens, com 4 repetições, portanto 60 silos experimentais. Avaliaram-se o valor nutritivo, as perdas por gases e efluente e a recuperação de matéria seca (MS). A adição de polpa cítrica ou casca de soja peletizada elevou os teores de MS (29,4 e 28,9%), o que reduziu a produção de efluente (4,1 e 3,8 kg/t MV) e disponibilizou substratos fermentescíveis aos microrganismos, fato confirmado pela maior capacidade fermentativa e pela digestibilidade das silagens. Os aditivos à base de ácido fórmico foram mais efetivos em preservar carboidratos solúveis e proteína, o que culminou em maior digestibilidade. Esses aditivos também reduziram as perdas por gases e elevaram a recuperação de MS. O inoculante contendo bactérias homoláticas não diferiu desses aditivos quanto à digestibilidade das silagens e ainda reduziu as perdas por gases. Entre os aditivos, o benzoato foi o menos efetivo em alterar o padrão fermentativo das silagens de capim-marandu. O valor nutritivo e as perdas da silagem com teor de umidade original, não aditivada, podem ser considerados satisfatórios, contudo, a polpa cítrica e principalmente a casca de soja peletizadas se mostraram opção interessante e devem ser mais estudadas. O uso de aditivos contendo ácido fórmico também deve ser mais explorado com gramíneas tropicais, pois promove benefícios ao longo de todo processo fermentativo. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the nutritional value, fermentation profile and dry matter losses of Palisadegrass silages ensiled with either dried citrus pulp, soybean hulls, chemical or microbial additives. The trial was carried out in a completely randomized experimental design and in a factorial arrangement (3 × 5), with three dry matter levels (wet forage or forage ensiled with pelleted citrus pulp or pelleted soybean hulls) and five additives (without or with the presence of bacterial inoculants or the addition of: sodium benzoate, formic acid in the concentration of 62% or 44%), totalizing 15 treatments and 60 experimental silos. The variables analyzed were: nutritional value, losses due to gases and effluents, and dry matter recovery. The use of dried citrus pulp or soybean hulls at the ensiling time increased the dry matter content (29.4 and 28,9%) and decreased the effluent production (4.1 and 3.8 kg/t of fresh matter), also providing fermentable substrate to microorganisms, resulting in increased fermentation coefficient and digestibility of silages. The use of formic acid resulted in silages with higher digestibility and increased water-soluble carbohydrates and crude protein content. This additive was also effective in reducing the losses due to gases and, as a result, increased the total dry matter recovery. The treatment containing homolactic bacteria showed similar trend of increasing the digestibility and reducing the losses due to gases. The use of sodium benzoate was less effective in altering the fermentation pattern of tropical silages. The nutritional value and total dry matter losses of silages ensiled without additives can be considered satisfactory. However, wet forage ensiled with dried citrus pulp and, mainly, with soybeans hulls showed the best results. Treatments containing formic acid had a beneficial effect on the fermentation profile of tropical grass silages. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições por tratamento (sete tratamentos). Os seguintes aditivos foram utilizados na confecção das silagens: controle (sem aditivo), L. buchneri, óxido e carbonato de cálcio em doses de 1,0 e 1,5% da massa verde e sulfato de cálcio a 1,0% da massa verde, diluídos em 40 litros de água por tonelada de forragem. As variáveis analisadas foram: perdas totais e gasosas, produção de efluente, recuperação de matéria seca, composição química e valor nutritivo. As menores perdas fermentativas e gasosas foram observadas nas silagens com óxido ou carbonato de cálcio, que resultaram em maior taxa de recuperação de matéria seca. da mesma forma, as silagens tratadas com estes aditivos apresentaram maior teor de carboidratos solúveis residuais e de ácido lático e reduzida fermentação alcoólica. As silagens tratadas com óxido e carbonato apresentaram, no momento da abertura, maior teor de cinzas, menor concentração de componentes fibrosos e maiores coeficientes digestibilidade da matéria seca e da matéria orgânica. O teor de proteína encontrado nessas silagens foi semelhante ao observado na forragem fresca. A ensilagem de cana-de-açúcar com L. buchneri e sulfato de cálcio possibilitou a obtenção de desempenho similar ao determinado com a silagem sem aditivos. Silagens tratadas com carbonato e óxido de cálcio apresentam maior desempenho durante o processo fermentativo. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of chemical additives in the dry matter losses, fermentation profile, and nutritive value of sugar cane silages. The trial was carried out in a completely randomized experimental design with four replicates per treatment. The following additives were applied to the fresh forage during the ensiling: control (without additive), L. buchneri, calcium oxide and calcium carbonate,1.0 and 1.5% (wet basis) each, and calcium sulfate 1.0% (wet basis), all of them diluted in to 40 L of water per ton of fresh forage. The variables analyzed were: total and gaseous dry matter losses, dry matter recovery, fermentation end products, and nutritive value. The use of calcium oxide or calcium carbonate were effective in reducing dry matter losses and gaseous production and had the highest dry matter recovery rate. Both silages had also low ethanol content and, as a result, had greater concentrations of residual water soluble carbohydrates and lactic acid. The addition of calcium oxide and calcium carbonate at the time of ensiling produced silages with higher nutritive value compared with all other treatments, due to the increase of ash content and dry matter and organic digestibility and also, by reducing the fiber content. The crude protein content range was similar to the values observed in the fresh forage. The treatments with L. buchneri and calcium sulfate were ineffective in altering the fermentation process of sugar cane silages and became similar to the control silages. In summary, the overall analysis pointed out that the treatment containing calcium oxide and calcium carbonate improved the fermentation and storage process. O experimento foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho de animais de alta produção alimentados com rações com diferentes fontes de volumosos. Foram availados os seguintes tratamentos: cana-de-açúcar in natura (CA); silagem de cana-de-açúcar inoculada com L. buchneri (SCA); silagem de milho (SM); e mistura de cana-de-açúcar in natura e silagem de milho (CASM). O experimento foi conduzido em quadrado latino 4×4 com períodos de 21 dias, de modo que, nos sete últimos dias, realizou-se a coleta de amostras. Além da avaliação de desempenho, foram feitas análises bromatológicas dos volumosos, das rações e das sobras e análises da composição do leite e da estabilidade aeróbia dos volumosos e das rações. Observaram-se diferenças quanto ao consumo de MS, que foi maior quando os animais foram alimentados com a SCA (23,5 kg/dia) e a CASM (23,5 kg/dia). Todas as rações propiciaram aos animais elevada produção leiteira (24,4 a 25,5 kg/dia), que não diferiu entre os volumosos. A composição do leite variou somente quanto ao teor de gordura, que foi maior quando os animais foram alimentados com SM (36,1%) e CASM (34,8%). Os resultados de estabilidade aeróbia comprovaram efeito positivo da aditivação bacteriana na SCA, que apresentou a maior estabilidade entre os volumosos (13,63 horas). A ração contendo SM como fonte de volumoso apresentou a menor estabilidade, o que provavelmente explica o baixo consumo dos animais nesse tratamento. A SCA é uma alternativa tecnicamente viável à utilização da planta in natura e ambas podem proporcionar elevadas produções de leite, desde que as rações sejam corretamente balanceadas. A inoculação com L. buchneri melhorou o valor nutritivo e reduziu as perdas fermentativas.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de aditivos químicos sobre as perdas de matéria seca, composição química, valor nutritivo e estabilidade aeróbia da cana-de-açúcar in natura ou ensilada. No primeiro experimento, a cana-de-açúcar foi ensilada em silos laboratoriais. O experimento foi desenvolvido em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições por tratamento. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: L. buchneri, cal virgem e calcário em doses de 1,0 e 1,5% da MV e gesso a 1,0% da MV, diluídos em 40L de água por tonelada de massa verde. Após a abertura dos silos, foram realizadas avaliações de perdas, estabilidade aeróbia, valor nutritivo e composição química. Os tratamentos contendo fontes de CaO ou CaCO3 apresentaram maior recuperação de matéria seca e menores perdas totais e gasosas. Nesses tratamentos também foram observados menor teor de etanol e maior concentração de ácido lático e de carboidratos solúveis. Para as variáveis de valor nutritivo, as silagens tratadas com esses aditivos apresentaram alto teor de cinzas, menor teor de fibra, maior coeficiente de digestibilidade e pequena alteração da fração protéica. As silagens de cana-de-açúcar com gesso ou L. buchneri apresentaram desempenho semelhante a silagem controle para as variáveis acima mencionadas. No ensaio de estabilidade aeróbia, a silagem aditivada com 1,5% de cal virgem apresentou desempenho superior e semelhante as silagens com L. buchneri e gesso. De forma geral, durante a fase anaeróbia as silagens tratadas com fontes de CaO ou CaCO3 apresentaram desempenho superior. Entretanto, na fase aeróbia, somente o tratamento contendo 1,5% de cal virgem manteve desempenho satisfatório. O segundo experimento avaliou o tratamento em montes da cana-de-açúcar picada in natura com doses de cal virgem durante dez dias de exposição aeróbia. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições por tratamento e em arranjo fatorial 2x4 com medidas repetidas no tempo. O fatorial foi composto por dois modos de aplicação e quatro doses do aditivo (0, 0,5, 1,0 e 1,5% da MV). Durante o ensaio foram realizadas avaliações de estabilidade aeróbia, valor nutritivo e composição química. Para as variáveis de estabilidade aeróbia, a utilização de cal virgem foi efetiva em evitar o aquecimento da massa de forragem e reduzir as perdas de matéria seca. Para a avaliação químico-bromatológica, não foi constatada diferença nos teores de CHO´S entre os tratamentos. O tratamento da cana-de-açúcar com cal virgem elevou o pH e a fração mineral da forragem. Os maiores teores de proteína bruta foram observados para a forragem não aditivada, contudo os valores obtidos para os demais tratamentos estão dentro da amplitude relatada na literatura. Doses de 1,0% e 1,5% do aditivo foram efetivas em evitar a elevação nos teores de FDN e FDA da canade- açúcar. A fração hemicelulose sofreu solubilização parcial imediatamente após a aplicação do aditivo. Os maiores coeficientes de DVIVMS e DVIVMO foram observados para as doses altas do aditivo, no modo de aplicação a seco, principalmente nas primeiras horas após o tratamento. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of chemical additives over the dry matter losses, chemical composition, nutritive value and aerobic stability of green chopped and ensiled sugarcane. In the first trial, the sugar cane was ensiled in experimental silos. The trial was carried out in a completely randomized experimental design with four replicates per treatment. The treatments evaluated were: L. buchneri, CaO and CaCO3, 1.0 e 1.5% and Ca(SO4)2, 1.0% (wet basis), all of them diluted to 40L of water per ton of fresh forage. After the silos were opened, the following variables were analyzed: losses, aerobic stability, nutritive value and chemical composition. Higher recovery rates and lower dry matter losses and gaseous production were observed for the silages containing CaO or CaCO3. In these treatments were also observed lower ethanol production and higher lactic acid and water soluble carbohydrates contents. The analysis of nutritive value showed that the utilization of CaO and CaCO3 increased the ash content, diminished the fibrous portion, improved the organic and dry matter digestibility and resulted in small changes of the crude protein content. The utilization of L. buchneri and Ca(SO4)2 resulted in silages similar to the control treatment for these variables. In the aerobic stability assay, only the silage containing 1.5% of CaO maintained the best performance. The silages treated with L. buchneri or Ca(SO4)2 showed similar performance. In summary, the silages treated with CaO or CaCO3 showed the best performance in the anaerobic phase and in the aerobic assay, only the treatment containing 1.5% of CaO maintained the positive performance across both assay. In the second trial, the green chopped sugar cane was treated with doses of CaO in an aerobic assay during ten days. The trial was carried out as a completely randomized experimental design with four replicates in a factorial design with repeated measures. The factorial was composed by two application methods and by increasing doses of CaO (0, 0.5, 1.0 e 1.5% in FF). The following variables were analyzed during the assay: aerobic stability, nutritive value and chemical composition. During the aerobic assay, the treatment with CaO reduced the heating and the dry matter losses in fresh sugar cane. For the chemical composition and nutritive value, there were no differences between treatments for the water soluble carbohydrates concentration. The utilization of CaO increased the pH and ash content of forages. Higher levels of crude protein were observed for the control forage, however the utilization of CaO did not reduced significantly the crude protein value. Doses of 1.0 and 1.5% of CaO inhibited the NDF and ADF uprising contents in the fresh sugar cane. The hemicellulose portion was solubilized immediately after the addition of CaO. Higher IVDMD and IVOMD coefficients were observed for the forage treated with 1.0% of CaO applied dried, mainly during the period immediately after treatment.

Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 and the fibrolytic enzymes β-glucanase and xylanase were applied to chopped sugarcane to study their effects on the nutritive value of silage. Sugarcane was mechanically harvested after 14 mo of growth and treated without (control) or with L. buchneri at a theoretical application rate of 5 × 10(4) cfu/g, 1 × 10(5) cfu/g, or 1 × 10(5) cfu/g plus enzymes. Forage was packed into farm-scale bag silos (40 t/silo) and stored for 92 d. Fifty-six bulls (32 Nellore and 24 Charolais × Nellore) were housed in 20 collective pens and fed diets comprising (dry matter [DM] basis) 458 g/kg sugarcane silage and 542 g/kg concentrates for an 84-d period. Treated silages had higher concentrations of acetic acid and lower concentrations of ethanol. Total mixed rations (TMR) containing inoculated silages exhibited significantly lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentration and, consequently, higher in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD). Thus, animals fed TMR containing treated silages spent less time chewing per day and per kilogram of DM intake (DMI), even at higher DMI levels. Nonetheless, the intake of NDF was similar across treatments (0.77 to 0.79 kg/100 kg BW) but markedly lower than the value reported for traditional forages. Average daily gain was significantly greater for animals fed TMR based on inoculated silages due to the higher DMI (14% on average) and the higher energy content of the diets, as indicated by the higher feed efficiency (12% on average). The dose of inoculants used and the addition of fibrolytic enzymes had no significant effects on silage parameters or animal performance. Therefore, inoculation of L. buchneri during sugarcane ensilage can alter the fermentation pattern by increasing acetic acid yield, reducing silage nutrient losses, and improving feed efficiency by bulls.

A utilizacao da cana-de-acucar na forma de silagem constitui-se em um tema que vem se destacando nos ultimos anos, e que desperta o interesse de produtores e pesquisadores em funcao dos beneficios que essa tecnica representa. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de aditivos quimicos no valor nutritivo da silagem de cana-de-acucar. O experimento foi desenvolvido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repeticoes por tratamento. Os seguintes aditivos foram utilizados para a confeccao das silagens: L. buchneri, cal virgem ou calcario em doses de 1,0 e 1,5% da MV e gesso agricola a 1,0% da MV, diluidos em 40 litros de agua por tonelada de forragem. As variaveis analisadas foram: materia mineral, proteina bruta, digestibilidade da materia seca e orgânica, fibra em detergente neutro e fibra em detergente acido. Para as variaveis de valor nutritivo, as silagens tratadas com cal virgem ou calcario apresentaram, no momento da abertura, maior teor de cinzas, menor concentracao de componentes fibrosos e maiores coeficientes digestibilidade da materia seca e orgânica. O teor de proteina bruta encontrado para esses tratamentos esta dentro da amplitude preconizada para a forragem fresca. A ensilagem da cana-de-acucar com L. buchneri ou gesso apresentaram desempenho semelhante ao tratamento controle para as variaveis acima mencionadas. O tratamento com cal virgem ou calcario melhorou o valor nutritivo da silagem de cana-de-acucar.

Silagens de milho inoculadas com Lactobacillus buchneri são mais estáveis quando expostos ao ar. No entanto, os benefícios dessa inoculação são dosedependentes e o incremento de ácido acético nas silagens pode culminar em menor consumo de ração. Dessa forma, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de doses de inoculação com L. buchneri nas características de silagens de milho e elucidar as implicações do seu fornecimento como volumoso exclusivo para vacas leiteiras. Foram confeccionadas silagens em silos tipo \'bags\', sendo empregados como tratamentos as seguintes doses de inoculação com L. buchneri: 0, 1x105, 5x105 e 1x106 ufc/g de forragem fresca. O perfil fermentativo das silagens foi modificado pela inoculação, havendo redução nos teores de ácido lático e etanol e incremento nos teores de ácido acético, propiônico e 1-Propanol. As contagens de bactérias ácido láticas foram aumentadas pela inoculação, enquanto as de leveduras foram reduzidas, o que contribuiu para a obtenção de silagens mais estáveis em aerobiose. A composição bromatológica das silagens foi semelhante entre os tratamentos e os desdobramentos do fornecimento das silagens inoculadas para vacas leiras foram: tendência de redução no consumo de matéria seca (CMS); modificação no padrão de consumo de alimentos e redução na produção de leite corrigido para 3,5% de gordura. Neste estudo, a alteração no CMS foi correlacionada com os incrementos de ácido acético, ácido propiônico e 1-propanol nas silagens. The inoculation with Lactobacillus buchneri in corn silage provides high quality and stabler roughages, when it is exposed to air. However, the inoculation benefits are dose-dependents and the increase of acetic acid in silages could start an intake reduction of this feed. The studies, which evaluated intake and animal performance, are rare e doubtful due to the roughage range variety for dairy cows diets. In this way, the objective of this study was to evaluate the dose effect of L. buchneri inoculation on corn silage characteristics and elucidate the implications of its inclusion as exclusive roughage for dairy cows. The silages were stored in bag silos, which the treatments were composed based on the L. buchneri doses: 0; 1x105; 5x105 and 1x106 ufc/g FM of forage. The silages fermentative profiles were modified by inoculation, occurring reduction of latic acid and ethanol levels and increasing in the acetic acid levels. The LABs counting were increased by the inoculation, meanwhile the yeasts counting were reduced, which contributed to obtain a stabler silage in aerobic environment. The silage chemical composition was alike comparing the treatments, and the results of inoculated silages offered to dairy cows were: tendency of a reduction on DM and NDF intakes; modification on feed intake standards, with lower DMI in the morning period with no changes in ingestion times; and reduction on milk yield corrected for fat content, following the daily milk energy secretion reduction. In this study, the change on DMI was correlated with the increase of acetic acid, propionic acid and 1-propanol in silages.

Foram realizados dois experimentos visando avaliar diferentes estratégias de vedação para silos do tipo trincheira. No experimento I, objetivou-se avaliar as características fermentativas, composição química e perdas de matéria seca e de matéria orgânica em silagens de milho vedadas com diferentes tipos de filmes plásticos e com ou sem a adição de camada de bagaço de cana. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: ETNC: filme dupla face de polietileno com 200 ?m de espessura; ETC: filme dupla face de polietileno com 200 ?m de espessura recoberto com camada de 10 cm de bagaço de cana e ET+ADNC: filme co-extrusado dupla face de poliamida e polietileno, com 120 ?m de espessura. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e suas médias foram comparadas pelo teste Tukey, a 5% de signigicância. A quantidade de silagem deteriorada foi menor para o tratamento ETC, enquanto que os demais tratamentos foram semelhantes entre si. Não foi observada diferença significativa entre os tratamentos para a composição bromatológica, entretanto, observou-se diferença para entre os diferentes pontos amostrados (TL: topo lateral, TC: topo central e C: centro) para as variáveis MS, FDA, amido, hemicelulose e DVIVMO, sendo que os piores resultados foram encontrados nas regiões periféricas (TL e TC) dos silo. Os tratamentos não influenciaram na contagem de microrganismo (BAL: bactérias ácido láticas, FF: fungos filamentosos e LEV: leveduras), porém, com relação ao local de coleta houve diferença para BAL e FF. Como esperado, a população de FF foi maior na periferia dos silos, enquanto que a de BAL foi maior no centro. A contagem de leveduras não sofreu influência do tratamento e local de amostragem. No experimento II, objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho animal em função da estratégia de vedação de silagens de milho. Foram utilizadas 15 vacas distribuídas aleatoriamente em cinco quadrados latinos 3x3, com períodos de 21 dias. Os animais foram mantidos em sistema de confinamento Tie-Stall com baias individuais e alimentadas duas vezes ao dia. Os tratamentos foram definidos de acordo com o método de vedação: ETNC, ETC e ET+ADNC. As dietas foram formuladas para serem isoproteicas, com 53% de silagem de milho (% MS). As porções deterioradas das silagens foram descartadas diariamente, as rações foram preparadas utilizando apenas silagem não deteriorada. O consumo de matéria seca, a produção e composição do leite foram determinados entre os dias 15 e 21 de cada período experimental. Os dados foram analisados utilizando o Proc Mixed, do software estatístico SAS. Os tratamentos ET+ADNC e ETC apresentaram maior eficiência energética enquanto que os tratamentos ET+ADNC e ETNC tiveram tendência de maior produção de leite corrigido para 3,5% de gordura e excreção de energia no leite; da mesma forma, a excreção de proteína no leite também foi aumentada. O tratamento ETC não promoveu melhoras no valor nutritivo das silagens, enquanto que os tratamentos ET+ADNC e ETNC apresentaram tendência em maximizar o desempenho das vacas. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate different strategies to cover silos. The experiment I evaluate the chemical fermentation profile, chemical composition and losses of dry matter and organic matter in corn silage covered with different types of plastic film and with or without the added layer of sugarcane bagasse. The treatments were: ETNC: 200?m black-on-white polyethylene film; ETC: black-on-white polyethylene film plus sugarcane bagasse over the film and ET+ADNC: 125?m polyamide/polyethylene coextruded film. The experimental design was randomized blocks. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and their means were compared by Tukey test at 5% significance. The amount of spoiled silage was lower for treatment ETC, while the other treatments were similar. There was no significant difference between treatments for the chemical composition, although differences were observed between different sampling sites (TL: side wall, TC: top center and C: bottom) for the variables DM, ADF, starch, hemicellulose and IVOMD, while the worst results were found in the peripheral regions (TL and TC) of the silo. Treatments did not affect the count of microorganisms (BAL: lactic acid bacteria, FF: filamentous fungi: LEV: yeasts), however the FF acount was greater in the TL and TC, while BAL was higher in the C. The yeast count was not influenced by treatment or sampling site. In the experiment II was evaluated performance of dairy cows fed corn silage covered with different sealing strategies. Fifteen lactating cows were randomly assigned to 5 replicated 3×3 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Animals were housed in sand-bedded tie-stall barn and individually fed ad libitum to achieve approximately 10% refusals twice daily. Treatments were defined according to the method of sealing: ETNC, ETC and ET+ADNC. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous with 53% corn silage (DM%) to meet the nutrient requirements of a dairy cow producing 35 kg×d-1 of milk. The deteriorated inedible silage was discarded every day and only edible silage was used to prepare the total mixed rations. Dry matter intake (DMI) and milk yield were recorded from d-15 to d-21 in each period, as well milk composition. Data were analyzed using the Mixed procedure of SAS. Treatments ET+ADNC and ETC showed higher energy efficiency while treatments ET+ADNC and ETNC tended to higher milk yield and energy excretion in milk, as well the excretion of protein in the milk was also increased. Contrary to expected, the ETC treatment did not improve the nutritive value of silages. In conclusion, treatments ET+ADNC and ETNC tended to maximize the performance of dairy cows.
