The normal functioning of the larynx or voicebox gives humans the ability to converse with others effortlessly. However, if the larynx is permanently removed due to injury or illness, speech cannot be produced. The electrolarynx, a noninvasive device used to produce speech for such persons, has a motor-induced hum which hinders telephone-based communication among electrolaryngeal speakers. This adversely affects the morale of electrolarynx users, leading to abandonment of technology, psychological issues and decreased quality of life. This paper examines a technique based on bandpass filtering of electrolaryngeal speech which has the potential of increasing the quality and intelligibility of speech produced by means of an electrolarynx. Finite impulse response and infinite impulse response filtering with bandpass frequencies analogous to telephone landline and wideband filtering were investigated. Objective testing and subjective testing of quality and intelligibility of electrolaryngeal speech have been performed in each phase of the work. Statistical analysis based on one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) has been conducted after each round of subjective testing. Results indicate that the quality as well as intelligibility of electrolaryngeal speech can be improved with the help of bandpass filtering., (Copyright © 2022 The Voice Foundation. Studying isoform expression at the microscopic level has always been a challenging task. A classical example is kidney, where glomerular and tubulo-interstitial compartments carry out drastically different physiological functions and thus presumably their isoform expression also differs. We aim at developing an experimental and computational pipeline for identifying isoforms at microscopic structure-level. We microdissected glomerular and tubulo-interstitial compartments from healthy human kidney tissues from two cohorts. The two compartments were separately sequenced with the PacBio RS II platform. These transcripts were then validated using transcripts of the same samples by the traditional Illumina RNA-Seq protocol, distinct Illumina RNA-Seq short reads from European Renal cDNA Bank (ERCB) samples, and annotated GENCODE transcript list, thus identifying novel transcripts. We identified 14,739 and 14,259 annotated transcripts, and 17,268 and 13,118 potentially novel transcripts in the glomerular and tubulo-interstitial compartments, respectively. Of note, relying solely on either short or long reads would have resulted in many erroneous identifications. Primary testicular plasmacytoma is rare, especially when occurring in the absence of a previous or concurrent diagnosis of multiple myeloma. An 84-year-old gentleman was admitted with complaints of swelling over the right side of scrotum for the past 2 months. Local examination revealed a 10×15 cm tense and tender swelling involving the right scrotum. Therefore, high orchidectomy with excision of hemiscrotum was done. The histopathology revealed testicular plasmacytoma, which was positive for CD 138.
