Forest ecosystems are some of the largest carbon (C) reservoirs on earth. Pinus halepensis Mill., Quercus ilex L. and Quercus pubescens Willd. represent the dominant tree cover in the Mediterranean forests of southern France. However, their contributions to the French and global forest C and nitrogen (N) stocks are frequently overlooked and inaccurately quantified and little is known about to what extent the ongoing climate change can alter these stocks. We quantified the soil organic C (SOC) and N (SN) stocks in Mediterranean forests dominated by these tree species and evaluated to what extent an experimental precipitation reduction (about −30% yearly) affects these stocks and the litter decomposition efficiency. Litter mass losses were 55.7, 49.8 and 45.7% after 24 months of decomposition in Q. ilex, Q. pubescens and P. halepensis forests, respectively, and were 19% lower under drier climatic conditions. The SOC stocks were 14.0, 16.7 and 18.5 Mg ha−1 and the SN stocks were 0.70, 0.93 and 0.88 Mg ha−1 in Q. ilex, Q. pubescens and P. halepensis forests, respectively. The shallowness and stoniness of these Mediterranean forests could explain these limited stocks. By distinguishing the organic from the organo–mineral layer, we showed 74% less SOC in the organic layer of the P. halepensis forest under drier conditions, while no difference was detected in the organo–mineral layer or in the two oak forests. This last finding deserves further investigation and points out the necessity to distinguish the organic from the organo–mineral layer to detect the first impacts of climate change on SOC stocks.

International audience; Earthworms are widespread soil organisms that contribute to a wide range of ecosystem services. As such, it is important to improve our knowledge, still scanty, of the factors that drive the assembly of earthworm communities. The aim of the present study was to conjointly evaluate the effects on the assembly of earthworm communities of i) soil properties (texture, organic matter content, and pH), ii) grassland management (grassland age, livestock unit, and type of fertilization), iii) landscape diversity (richness, diversity of surrounding habitats, and grassland plant diversity), and iv) presence of hedgerows. The study was conducted in temperate grasslands of Brittany, France. Earthworms were sampled in 24 grasslands and, in three of these grasslands, they were sampled near a hedgerow or near a ditch (control without a hedgerow). Soil properties explained the larger portion of the variation in the earthworm community parameters compared to grassland management or landscape diversity. The increase in soil organic matter content and pH were the most favorable factors for earthworm abundance and biomass, in particular for endogeic species. Regarding grassland management, the increase in the livestock unit was the most damaging factor for earthworm communities, in particular for the anecic earthworm biomass and endogeic species richness. Surprisingly, landscape diversity negatively affected the total earthworm abundance and epigeic earthworm biomass, but it was related to an increase in the epi-anecic species. At a finer scale, we also demonstrated that the presence of hedgerows surrounding grasslands enhanced earthworm species richness, especially within the epigeic and anecic ecological categories. This study highlights that the earthworm ecological categories respond specifically to environmental filters; further studies need to be conducted to elucidate the factors that drive the assembly of earthworm communities at this ecological category level. We recommend that policymakers should act on landscape management to favor earthworm diversity in order to improve the ecosystem services they drive.

Aims Previous cover crop studies mainly focused on the links between plant uptake and soil fertility, and there is a clear knowledge gap regarding the role of microbes in these processes. Our aim was then to better understand the effects of plant mixtures (versus monoculture) and the specific effects of each plant species on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) partitioning between plant, soil, and more particularly microbial pools. Methods Monocultures and mixtures composed of black oat, field pea and Indian mustard were grown during two months in a greenhouse. The concentrations of carbon (C), N and P were measured in both plant and microbial biomass at final harvest, together with soil available N and P. Results Overall, our findings highlight stronger selection effect (i.e., presence of key species) rather than complementarity effects (i.e., species mixture) to affect the measured parameters. The presence of pea increased the biomass production of oat and mustard, as well as the nutrient concentration of oat, whereas pea P concentration decreased in presence of oat and mustard N and P concentrations were negatively impacted respectively by the presence of oat and pea. We also observed a strong competition between plants and microbes for both soil N and P. Conclusions The oat-pea and the oat-pea-mustard mixtures represented the best compromise between biomass production, nutrient storage and biomass C:N ratio, thus insuring a good organic matter decomposition and nutrient provision for the following main crop.

Seedling recruitment is a bottleneck for population dynamics and range shift. The vital rates linked to recruitment by seed are impacted by amplified drought induced by climate change. In the Mediterranean region, autumn and winter seedling emergence and mortality may have strong impact on the overall seedling recruitment. However, studies focusing on the temporal dynamic of recruitment during these seasons are rare. This study was performed in a deciduous Mediterranean oak forest located in southern France and quantifies the impact of amplified drought conditions on autumn and winter seedling emergence and seedling mortality rates of two herbaceous plant species with meso‐Mediterranean and supra‐Mediterranean distribution (respectively, Silene italica and Silene nutans). Seedlings were followed from October 2019 to May 2020 in both undisturbed and disturbed plots where the litter and the aboveground biomass have been removed to create open microsites. Amplified drought conditions reduced seedling emergence and increased seedling mortality for both Silene species but these negative effects were dependent on soil disturbance conditions. Emergence of S. italica decreased only in undisturbed plots (−7%) whereas emergence of S. nutans decreased only in disturbed plots (−10%) under amplified drought conditions. The seedling mortality rate of S. italica was 51% higher under amplified drought conditions in undisturbed plots while that of S. nutans was 38% higher in disturbed plots. Aridification due to lower precipitation in the Mediterranean region will negatively impact the seedling recruitment of these two Silene species. Climate change effects on early vital rates may likely have major negative impacts on the overall population dynamic., This study was performed in a deciduous Mediterranean oak forest and quantifies the impact of amplified drought conditions on autumn and winter seedling emergence and seedling mortality rates of two Silene species. Amplified drought conditions reduced seedling emergence and increased seedling mortality for both Silene species but these negative effects were dependent on soil properties.

1. The ongoing climate change may strongly impact soil biodiversity with cascading effects on the processes they drive. Thus, it is of prime interest to improve our knowledge about responses by soil organisms such as collembolans to expected shifts in environmental conditions by considering communities comprising both detritivores and predators.2. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how simulated climate change and predation under laboratory conditions alter a collembolan community.3. To infer the impact of climate change, we applied a decreased level of soil moisture (60% vs. 30% soil water holding capacity) and an increasing air temperature (15 degrees C vs. 25 degrees C) to a collembolan community constituted by four species (Folsomia candida, Protaphorura fimata, Proisotoma minuta and Mesaphorura macrochaeta) exhibiting distinct functional traits, for example, body size and furca presence, in the presence or absence of a predatory gamasid Acari Stratiolaelaps scimitus during 2 months in a microcosm experiment.4. We observed that decreasing soil moisture altered the collembolan community with species-specific responses. Interaction between soil moisture, temperature and predation indicates that low soil moisture reduced total collembolan abundance especially (a) by suppressing the positive effect of increasing temperature and (b) by increasing the predatory control on collembolan abundance.5. These results highlight that soil moisture is the major driver of Collembola community and by consequence, a shift in climatic parameters with the ongoing climate change should strongly modify the Collembola community structure and the predator-prey interaction. Our findings are highly important since a strengthening of predation impact on Collembola prey could have major consequences on the whole soil food web being able to lead to a slowdown of key ecosystem processes they drive (e.g. litter decomposition and nutrient recycling). Finally, our study promotes the need to study more complex systems considering distinct soil-dwelling species, their functional traits and their trophic interactions to better predict the ecosystem responses to the ongoing climate change.

Groundwater level is crucial for wetland plant growth and reproduction, but the extent of its effect on plant growth can vary along with changed precipitation and temperature at different seasons. In this context, we investigated the effect of two groundwater levels (10 cm vs. 20 cm depth) on growth and reproductive parameters of Carex cinerascens, a dominant plant species in the Poyang Lake wetland, during three seasons (spring, summer, and autumn) and during two consecutive years (2015 and 2016). Carex cinerascens showed low stem number, height, and individual and population biomass in summer compared to spring and autumn. 10 cm groundwater level was overall more suitable for plant growth resulting in higher stem height and biomass. However, the interactive effect between groundwater level and season clearly demonstrated that the effect of groundwater level on plant growth occurred mainly in autumn. After the withering of the plant population in summer, we observed that C. cinerascens growth recovered in autumn to similar values observed in spring only with 10 cm groundwater level. Consequently, we could deduce that lowering groundwater level in the studied Poyang Lake wetland will negatively impact C. cinerascens regeneration and growth particularly during the second growth cycle occurring in autumn. Additionally, our results showed that, independently of the season and groundwater level, population biomass of C. cinerascens was lower during drier year. Altogether, our findings suggest that water limitation due to both reduction in precipitation and decreased groundwater level during the year can strongly impact plant communities., We investigated the effect of groundwater level on growth and reproductive parameters of Carex cinerascens, a dominant plant species in the Poyang Lake wetland, during two consecutive years. International audience; Soil organisms play a major role on litter decomposition process and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. These organisms are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions such as soil temperature and moisture conditions which control their demographic parameters and activity. The ongoing climate change can therefore directly affect soil biota communities and the processes they drive. Besides, climate change can also indirectly affect soil biota by altering tree functional traits (e.g., N, Ca, Mg, water holding capacity) with cascading effects on the litter quality. The aim of this study was to determine the relative effects of increased drought and litter type on microbial biomass (bacteria and fungi) and mesofauna abundance (Collembola and Acari) in three experimental sites representative of the three main forests encountered in the northern part of the Mediterranean Basin (dominated by either Quercus pubescens, Quercus ilex or Pinus halepensis) where rainfall exclusion experiments were taking place. At each site, and in each precipitation treatment (natural and amplified drought plots), we collected and transplanted foliage litters (i.e., species × drought level). After two years, we reported a litter species effect: Q. pubescens litter presented consistently the higher abundance of all soil biota groups compared to Q. ilex and P. halepensis litters in each forest. Surprisingly, despite that the amplified drought treatment induced a modification of the litter quality, we did not reported an indirect reduced precipitation effect on soil biota parameters. While Oribatid Acari abundance decreased with amplified drought in all three forest types, the direct effects on the other soil biota groups were forest-dependent. In P. halepensis forest, amplified drought resulted in higher bacterial and fungal biomasses but lower Collembola abundance. In Q. ilex forest both Collembola and predatory Acari abundances decreased with amplified drought. In addition, the positive relationships between Collembola and Oribatida abundances and litter mass loss disappeared under amplified drought conditions in both Q. ilex and P. halepensis forests. These results suggest a key role played by Ca, Mg, specific leaf area (SLA) and water holding capacity (WHC) as drivers of soil biota parameters. Finally, the study highlights that within the same Mediterranean region, climate change could differently alter the soil organisms inhabiting the litter layer and their contributions to the decomposition process depending on the tree species and soil biota group considered.

Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOC) are largely accepted to contribute to both atmospheric chemistry and ecosystem functioning. While the forest canopy is recognized as a major source of BVOC, emissions from plant litter have scarcely been explored with just a couple of studies being focused on emission patterns over litter decomposition process. The aim of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize BVOC emissions (C1–C15) from Pinus halepensis litter, one of the major Mediterranean conifer species, over a 15‐month litter decomposition experiment. Senescent needles of P. halepensis were collected and placed in 42 litterbags where they underwent in situ decomposition. Litterbags were collected every 3 months and litter BVOC emissions were studied in vitro using both online (PTR‐ToF‐MS) and offline analyses (GC‐MS). Results showed a large diversity of BVOC (58 compounds detected), with a strong variation over time. Maximum total BVOC emissions were observed after 3 months of decomposition with 9.18 µg gDM −1 hr−1 mainly composed by terpene emissions (e.g., α‐pinene, terpinolene, β‐caryophyllene). At this stage, methanol, acetone, and acetic acid were the most important nonterpenic volatiles representing, respectively, up to 26%, 10%, and 26% of total emissions. This study gives an overview of the evolution of BVOC emissions from litter along with decomposition process and will thus contribute to better understand the dynamics and sources of BVOC emission in Mediterranean pine forests., We investigated the evolution of the BVOC emissions from the litter of Pinus halepensis during a 15‐month field decomposition experiment. High variability of emissions over decomposition was showed using online and offline measurements performed in vitro. Major compounds observed were monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and methanol, and their quantity and quality (terpenic composition) varied over sampling times with a high peak after 3 months of litter decomposition and, for a lesser extent, after 6 months for terpenic emission.

Recycling phosphorus (P) is crucial to meet future P demand for crop production. We investigated the possibility to use calcium phosphite (Ca-Phi) waste, an industrial by-product, as P fertilizer following the oxidation of phosphite (Phi) to phosphate (Pi) during green manure (GM) cropping in order to target P nutrition of subsequent maize crop. In a greenhouse experiment, four GM crops were fertilized (38 kg P ha−1) with Ca-Phi, triple super phosphate (TSP) or without P (Control) in sandy and clay soils. The harvested GM biomass (containing Phi after Ca-Phi fertilization) was incorporated into the soil before maize sowing. Incorporation of GM residues containing Phi slowed down organic carbon mineralization in clay soil and mass loss of GM residues in sandy soil. Microbial enzymatic activities were affected by Ca-Phi and TSP fertilization at the end of maize crop whereas microbial biomass was similarly influenced by TSP and Ca-Phi in both soils. Compared to Control, Ca-Phi and TSP increased similarly the available P (up to 5 mg P kg−1) in sandy soil, whereas in clay soil available P increased only with Ca-Phi (up to 6 mg P kg−1), indicating that Phi oxidation occurred during GM crops. Accordingly, no Phi was found in maize biomass. However, P fertilization did not enhance aboveground maize productivity and P export, likely because soil available P was not limiting. Overall, our results indicate that Ca-Phi might be used as P source for a subsequent crop since Phi undergoes oxidation during the preliminary GM growth.

Wetlands occupy the transitional zone between aquatic and terrestrial systems. Hydrological conditions have significant influence on wetland plant communities and soil biogeochemistry. However, our knowledge about plant-soil interactions in wetlands along hydrological gradients is still limited, although it is crucial to guide wetland management decisions and to adapt, whenever possible, hydrological conditions to the different plant communities. To this aim, we related vegetation composition, plant functional traits, soil physicochemical properties, soil microbial biomass, and soil enzymatic activities in wetlands on the southeastern shore of Neuchatel lake, Switzerland, a lake whose level is partly regulated. Aboveground and belowground plant biomass and correspondent C, N and P concentrations remained constant or decreased moving from the vegetation community subjected to more frequent flooding events to the community with almost no flooding. The soil organic layer exhibited always higher nutrient concentrations and greater enzymatic activities than the organo-mineral and mineral layers. The chemical and biological characteristics of the soil organic layer showed decreasing values for most of the parameters along the hydrological gradient from lakeshore to upland wetland communities. On the basis of nutrient stoichiometiy, plant-soil system in the plant community with most flooding events had no-nutrient limitation, while there was a N limitation in the transitional community. In the upland plant community where there was no flooding effect, the plant-soil system was characterized by N and P co-limitation. These findings are important because they provide a threshold for flooding regime by the lake in the context of optimization of lake level regulation under various stakeholders needs. International audience; Background and aimsInteractions between functional groups of soil fauna and plants are poorly explored although they drive functional processes such as nutrient availability and therefore plant performance. Here, we investigated the separated and combined effects of two collembolan functional groups on soil properties and growth of Lolium perenne, a typical grass species from temperate grasslands.MethodsUnder microcosm conditions, we established four treatments based on the presence and combination of two collembolan functional groups: (1) control without Collembola; (2) epedaphic species; (3) euedaphic species; (4) epedaphic + euedaphic species. After five months of experiment, we measured the effect of those treatments on both nutritional and morphological variables of L. perenne and on soil properties.ResultsCollembolan presence stimulated plant performance. Individuals of L. perenne growing with euedaphic species presented higher numbers of leaves and nutrient contents compared with individuals growing with epedaphic species. Further, the combination of both collembolan functional groups enhanced plant performance and soil nutrient availability, demonstrating that a functionally diversified soil fauna assemblage cause overyielding of ecological processes.ConclusionOur results provide evidences of complementarity interactions between different functional groups of soil fauna causing overyielding of primary production.

International audience; AimThe functioning of soil microbial communities is co-determined by plant community composition and environmental factors. Decreased precipitation predicted in the Mediterranean area will affect both determinants, yet their interplay on soil microbial functioning is poorly understood. Here we assessed the interaction of plant community diversity and reduced precipitation on microbial metabolic activity and diversity in the topsoil of a Mediterranean shrubland in Southern France.MethodsWith a large field experiment using 92 plots that differed in the diversity of the four dominant shrub species (Quercus coccifera, Cistus albidus, Ulex parviflorus, and Rosmarinus officinalis) we manipulated the average precipitation (a mean reduction of 12%) over three years and analyzed the community level physiological profile (MicroResp™) after 7 and 31 months of partial rain exclusion.ResultsPartial rain exclusion had only subtle effects on soil microbial parameters. Soil microbial global metabolic activity and diversity increased with total shrub cover but tended to decrease with shrub diversity under control conditions, relationships that were absent with partial rain exclusion. We showed strong shrub composition control over the soil microbial parameters, with a particularly strong effect of Q. coccifera.ConclusionOur results suggest that climate change may have greater impact on soil microbial functioning via shifts in plant community composition rather than through direct effects of reduced precipitation, yet this may depend on how precipitation will change.

Plant litter decomposition is an essential ecosystem function in temperate streams. Both riparian vegetation and decomposer communities are major determinants of the decomposition efficiency and the interactions occurring within litter mixtures. However, the extent to which such litter mixture interactions are affected by combined shifts in litter traits and decomposer community is not well understood. We used leaf litter from 10 European tree species in order to study litter decomposition and litter mixture effects occurring in two-species litter mixtures in a temperate forested stream of northwestern France. The study distinguished between (1) decomposition involving microorganisms alone or together with invertebrates, and (2) decomposition involving litter mixtures of similar or dissimilar nutrient content. Increasing mean litter nutrient concentration favored both microbial activity and litter decomposition rate. Surprisingly, the highest litter mixture effects occurred in mixtures containing two nutrient-rich litters and occurred mainly in macroinvertebrate presence. Both the “mass ratio hypothesis,” expressed as the community-weighted mean traits (TraitCWM), and the “niche complementarity hypothesis,” expressed as the functional dissimilarity of litter traits (TraitFD), contributed to explain litter mixture effects. However, TraitCWM was found to be a better predictor than TraitFD. Finally, when evaluating the individual contributions of litter nutrients, calcium and magnesium appeared as important drivers of litter mixture effects. Our findings suggest that the mass ratio hypothesis overrules the niche complementarity hypothesis as a driver of litter diversity effects. Our study highlights the key importance of macroinvertebrates and of leaf nutrients, such as Ca and Mg, which are often neglected in decomposition studies in streams.

International audience; Recent studies consider the native flora as a potential source of plant candidates for phytostabilization of metal and metalloid (MM) contaminated soils, but ecological restoration is not the main objective of these researches. However, in contaminated areas, phytostabilization should be considered as a useful tool for ecological restoration. The present study takes stock of 3 years of a Mediterranean pilot site implementation using native plant species to recover plant and microbial communities (diversity and functions) together with soil re-mediation in the Calanques National Park. To determine the success of this operation, three in situ treatments were compared: ecological restoration plots characterized by the handling of physical environment (creation of cultivation terraces) and plants, negative control plots without vegetation but with the same physical environment handling as ecological restoration plots, and positive control plots with natural vegetation and no handling. The results suggest that an ecological restoration trajectory is initiated in the ecological restoration plots, characterized by a partial permanent plant cover. However, there is no evidence of a significant improvement of soil quality (evaluated by soil texture, pH, nutrients and organic carbon contents, cation exchange capacity, microbial biomass and activities) and phytostabilization efficiency after 3 years. Native plant communities and their associated microorganisms may need more time before improving soil quality and MM stabilization under the drastic Mediterranean conditions. Any amendment addition to accelerate restoration and MM immobilization was forbidden in this protected area. Under such conditions, an active restoration need to be carried out in this contaminated area even if resilient dynamics of the native plant communities may sporadically occur over a long period of time.

International audience; Background - The Biological Field Station of Paimpont (Station Biologique de Paimpont, SBP), owned by the University of Rennes and located in the Brocéliande Forest of Brittany (France), has been hosting student scientific research and field trips during the last 60 years. The study area of the SBP is a landscape mosaic of 17 ha composed of gorse moors, forests, prairies, ponds and creeks. Land use has evolved over time. Historical surveys by students and researchers focused on insects and birds. With this study, we aimed to increase the range of taxa observations, document changes in species composition and landscape and provide a basis for interdisciplinary research perspectives. We gathered historical data, implemented an all-taxon biodiversity inventory (ATBI) in different habitats of the SBP study area, measured abiotic factors in the air, water and soil and performed a photographical landscape observation during the BioBlitz held in July 2017. New information - During the 24 h BioBlitz, organised by the SBP and the EcoBio lab from the University of Rennes and the French National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS), different habitats were individually sampled. Seventy-seven experts, accompanied by 120 citizens and 12 young people participating in the European Volunteer Service, observed, identified and databased 660 species covering 5 kingdoms, 8 phyla, 21 classes, 90 orders and 247 families. In total, there were 1819 occurrences including records identified to higher taxon ranks, thereby adding one more kingdom and four more phyla. Historical data collection resulted in 1176 species and 4270 occurrences databased. We also recorded 13 climatic parameters, 10 soil parameters and 18 water parameters during the BioBlitz. Current habitats were mapped and socio-ecological landscape changes were assessed with a diachronic approach using 32 historical photographs and historical maps. The coupling of historical biodiversity data with new biotic and abiotic data and a photographic comparison of landscape changes allows an integrative understanding of how the SBP changed from agriculturally-used land to a managed natural area within the last 60 years. Hence, this BioBlitz represents an important holistic sampling of biodiversity for studies on trophic webs or on trophic interactions or on very diverse, but connected, habitats. The integration of social, biotic and abiotic data opens innovative research opportunities on the evolution of socio-ecosystems and landscapes.

International audience; Litter decomposition is central to ecosystem functioning and depends, under constant abiotic conditions, on litter quality and decomposer activity. During the assembly of a plant community following disturbance, litter quality is expected to decrease, due to an increasing proportion of resource-conservative species, whereas decomposer activity is expected to increase, due to the establishment of decomposer populations and their response to local vegetation (“home-field advantage”, HFA). To date, the combined effect of these processes remains poorly understood. We studied 27 seminatural grasslands in western France, ranging from 1 to 25 years since last cultivation. We measured the functional composition of plant communities using litter traits (specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, C/N ratio, phenolics), characterized the entire community of decomposers (macrofauna, mesofauna, microbes) and performed reciprocal litter transplants to quantify HFA. We found that, overall, decomposition was rapid, and HFA was not evident. While there was substantial among-grassland variation in decomposition and HFA, neither changed with grassland age. Litter quality and decomposer efficiency also remained, overall, unchanged. However, grassland age determined all measured litter traits and caused soil microbial C/N ratio to decline. Although these changes impacted decomposition individually, together they canceled out each other, resulting in constant decomposition across the chronosequence. Our results suggest that processes driving decomposition differ during grassland succession and suggest that HFA may be lower in communities with high litter quality. Moreover, simultaneous assembly processes have opposing and therefore stabilizing effects on decomposition, possibly explaining the outstanding resilience of primary production in temperate grassland ecosystems.

International audience; Plant–plant chemical interactions in forests can have a strong impact on the biodiversity and dynamics of these ecosystems, particularly in Mediterranean forests where plants exhibit a high secondary metabolite diversity. Allelopathic interactions in Mediterranean ecosystems have been mostly studied in the first stages of ecosystem dynamics, shrublands and pine forests, but little is known about these interactions in mature oak forests. In this study, the allelopathic effect of three main woody species of downy oak forests (Quercus pubescens, Acer monspessu-lanum and Cotinus coggygria) on germination and growth of two herbaceous species (Festuca ovina and Linum per-enne) was tested through aqueous extracts obtained from different leaf phenological stages (green, senescent and litter). The germination velocity of the two target species was inhibited by the aqueous extracts of senescent leaves from all the woody species. The growth of F. ovina seedlings was affected by aqueous extracts of green leaves of all the woody species, while the growth of L. perenne was only affected by aqueous extracts of green leaves of A. monspessulanum. This shows that (i) allelochemicals released by leaf leachates of the dominant woody species could control the dynamic of the herbaceous species, and then their potential competition with trees and (ii) allelo-pathic effects of woody species are related to their phenological stage and seem consistent with the development stage of target species.

International audience; Earthworms contribute to a wide range of ecosystem services provided by the soil. Nevertheless, synecology of these organisms is still not properly elucidated especially in terms of species interactions. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of anecic earthworm species interactions on their individual biomass. These effects were measured using three epi-anecic species, Lumbricus rubellus rubellus (Hoffmeister, 1843), Lumbricus centralis (Bouché, 1972), Lumbricus terrestris (Linné 1758), and three strict-anecic species, Aporrectodea caliginosa meridionalis (Bouché, 1972), Aporrectodea nocturna (Evans, 1946), Aporrectodea giardi (Savigny, 1826). Twenty-one pairs of individuals were established following five assemblages: monospecific pairwise assemblages of epi- and strict-anecic earthworms (2 × 3 treatments), bispecific pairwise assemblages within epi- and within strict-anecic earthworms (2 × 3 treatments) and bispecific pairwise assemblages with one epi- and one strict-anecic earthworm (3 × 3 treatments). Treatments were maintained in mesocosms for 30 days under controlled conditions (food provided at the soil surface at the beginning of the experiment) and changes in the earthworm individual biomass were measured. Strict-anecic earthworms in monospecific or bispecific assemblages maintained their initial biomass. In contrast, epi-anecic earthworms exhibited an increase of 12.4% and 23.7% of their biomass in monospecific and bispecific assemblages, respectively. In bispecific assemblages combining one epi- and one strict-anecic earthworm, epi-anecic earthworms solely gained biomass leading to a total increase of a 6.9%. Surprisingly, the biomass' changes were not homogenous within the two sub-categories as the six earthworm species exhibited species-specific responses. The greatest increases in individual biomass were recorded for epi-anecic earthworms in the bispecific assemblages. This study provides further evidence for the distinction between the two anecic sub-categories, as it indicates that species interactions is positive only for epi-anecic earthworm biomass.

International audience; The emergence of renewable energy infrastructures calls for a better understanding of their impact on biodiversity. The aim of the present study was to investigate in a mountain region the impact of a wind turbine on plant communities in their vicinity. A field survey was conducted in a wind farm situated in the Southern Romanian Carpathians, five years after the turbines were installed. We tested for the effects of the presence of the turbine and the distance to the turbine on plant species richness, on five plant ecological indicators and on the quality of the pastures. Overall, 33 plant species belonging to 16 families were recorded, and among them 21 were recorded in both the presence and the absence of wind turbine. The presence of a turbine did not affect the structure of the plant community, as the majority of the plots exhibited similar plant species richness and composition. Finally, the values of the ecological indicators and the pasture quality were not altered by the presence of the turbine. Such analyses could be extended over longer time periods so as to capture potential long-term effects and by integrating other environmental factors such as microclimatic conditions or soil properties.

International audience; The Mediterranean region is recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot. However, over the last decades, the cessation of traditional farming in the north part of the Mediterranean basin has given way to strong afforestation leading to occurrence of abandoned agricultural lands colonized by pioneer expansionist species like Pinus halepensis. This pine species is known to synthesize a wide range of secondary metabolites, and previous studies have demonstrated strong allelopathic potentialities of its needle and root leachates. Pinus halepensis is also recognized to release significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC) with potential allelopathic effects that have never been investigated. In this context, the objectives of the present study were to improve our knowledge about the VOC released from P. halepensis needles and roots, determine if these VOC affect the seed germination and root growth of two herbaceous target species (Lactuca sativa and Linum strictum), and evaluate if soil microorganisms modulate the potential allelopathic effects of these VOC. Thirty terpenes were detected from both, needle and root emissions with β‐caryophyllene as the major volatile. Numerous terpenes, such as β‐caryophyllene, δ‐terpinene, or α‐pinene, showed higher headspace concentrations according to the gradient green needles < senescent needles < needle litter. Seed germination and root growth of the two target species were mainly reduced in presence of P. halepensis VOC. In strong contrast with the trend reported with needle leachates in literature, we observed an increasing inhibitory effect of P. halepensis VOC with the progress of needle physiological stages (i.e., green needle < senescent needle < needle litter). Surprisingly, several inhibitory effects observed on filter paper were also found or even amplified when natural soil was used as a substrate, highlighting that soil microorganisms do not necessarily limit the negative effects of VOC released by P. halepensis on herbaceous target species.

International audience; Climate change is increasing crop losses and yield variability with impacts for global food security. In this context, conservation agriculture appears as a potential solution to maintain crop productivity, soil fertility and environmental sustainability. Therefore, understanding the combined effects of soil tillage and crop succession over a long period is of primary interest. In this study, we analyzed data from a 50 year long-term field experiment to assess (i) the change of climatic parameters, wheat yield and soil organic carbon (SOC) content; (ii) the combined effects of crop succession (monoculture vs. crop rotation) and soil tillage system (minimum tillage vs. plough) on wheat yield, SOC content and other soil properties at three soil depths (0-10, 10-20 and 20-50 cm); and (iii) the relative contributions of climatic parameters, wheat phenology and agricultural practices on wheat yield variability. Wheat yield was 16% higher in crop rotation compared to monoculture, while soil tillage system had no significant effect on wheat yield during the period 1977-2016. Despite a SOC content decline over time, which was especially marked during the first ten years of the study, SOC content was 7% higher in the minimum tillage treatment compared to the plough treatment, while crop rotation had no significant effect. In 2016, after 50 years of experimentation, both crop succession and soil tillage systems influenced soil properties. Over the 50-year period, the climatic conditions around the heading phase explained 22% of yield variability, while 18% of this variability was explained by crop succession and 6% by the growing degree days until heading stage. In a context of conservation agriculture promotion, our long-term field experiment provides key evidence that the combination of both minimum soil tillage and crop rotation improves soil fertility and crop productivity.

International audience; Chemical interactions in forested ecosystems play a role in driving biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. Plant phenolics released by leaching can influence surrounding plants and soil organisms such as bacteria, fungi or arthropods. However, our knowledge about such chemically-mediated biotic interactions in Mediterranean oak forests is still limited, in particular whether they play a role in the limited forest regeneration. In this study, we analyzed how phenolics of Cotinus coggygria, a dominant shrub of Mediterranean downy oak (Quercus pubescens) forests, influence understory herbaceous plant species, downy oak regeneration and soil organisms in order to obtain a more integrative view of possible direct and indirect interactions triggered by this shrub species. We performed a series of experiments testing the effect of aqueous extracts of C. coggygria, mimicking natural leachates, on these organisms. Cotinus coggygria contained a high quantity of phenolics in green and senescent leaves but much less in leaf litter. Extracts from C. coggygria leaves stimulated bacterial communities, exhibited few effects on both saprophytic and symbiotic fungi, and negatively affected Collembola. Herbaceous species growth was particularly impaired by extracts from green and senescent leaves, although these effects were alleviated in the presence of soil microorganisms. In both greenhouse and field experiments, C. coggygria affected early oak seedling establishment in particular through a reduced root growth, but exhibited no effect on later seedling and sapling growth. We discussed the implication of these results for the balance between competition and facilitation in oak forests and concluded that C. coggygria has the potential to strongly alter biotic interactions, understory plant diversity and oak forest dynamics.

International audience; Earthworms in interaction with soil microorganisms play a key role in litter decomposition. Moreover, as soil engineers, earthworms modify microbial communities and their enzymatic activities. Most studies focusing on earthworms and soil enzymatic activities compare distinct ecological categories of earthworms whereas their contributions and interactions within a given ecological category remain largely unknown. In this context, the aims of the present study were to determine and compare the contribution of (1) three strict-anecic earthworm species, (2) three epi-anecic earthworm species and (3) the pairwise interactions between these different species on Lolium perenne leaf litter decomposition and soil microbial activity. After 30 days of incubation, the surface litter mass loss and five soil enzymatic activities (FDAse, β-D-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, leucine amino-peptidase and acid phosphatase) were measured in both earthworm burrows and middens. In mono-specific assemblages, leaf litter mass loss and enzymatic activities were significantly higher in the presence of epi-anecic compared to strict-anecic species, whatever the species identity. These differences were higher for the β-D-glucosidase, leucine amino-peptidase and FDAse (+78%, +57% and +34%, respectively). Earthworm species interactions at both intra- and inter-ecological sub-categories did not enhance either leaf litter mass loss or enzymatic activities. Interestingly, FDAse activity was higher in earthworm burrows whereas acid phosphatase activity was higher in earthworm middens. These results indicate that the two anecic ecological sub-categories have different impacts on soil functioning and each of them regroups earthworm species with similar behaviour. This functional distinction highlights the key role of epi-anecic earthworms in fresh surface litter burial and decomposition, featuring their importance on nutrient cycling in soil and for microbial activities stimulation through resource availability.

International audience; Plant litter decomposition is an essential process of ecosystem functioning, driven by a complex soil food web. The identity and density of the predators, as well as the quality and quantity of litter, could conjointly affect the strength of trophic interactions within a soil food web. Pine and oak are dominant tree species in temperate and Mediterranean forests and, although they exhibit distinct litter characteristics, no previous study attempted to decipher how these two litters can affect a litter-based multi-trophic system with varying predator density. Using a microcosm experiment, we aimed at understanding how different densities of a predatory Acari (Stratiolaelaps scimitus) and two Mediterranean litter species (Quercuspubescens and Pinus halepensis) may impact the demographic parameters of the predatory Acari, its Collembola prey (Folsomia candida) and the fungal biomass associated with litter. We did not observe any interactive effect of litter identity and predator density on both predator and prey demographic parameters. Survival and fecundity rates of the predator and its prey decreased at high predator density. However, demographic parameters of the predator and its prey were differentially affected by litter identity, with greater prey demographic parameters in Quercus litter and, in the opposite, greater predator demographic parameters in Pinus litter, probably due to differences in physical characteristics providing more or less refuge for the prey. We also observed a higher increase in fungal biomass in Pinus compared to Quercus litter, i.e. the litter with the fungivorous Collembola abundance reduced by the predatory Acari. Litter identity could thus strongly regulate these tri-trophic interactions (Fungi – fungivorous Collembola – predatory Acari) in forest ecosystems. Finally, the implications of our findings could be important as the distribution area of oak and pine forests may be altered in response to climate change with then potentially strong cascading effects on soil organisms and the processes they drive.

The potential to use calcium phosphite (Ca-Phi) as phosphorus (P) fertilizer may represent an effective recycling of P-containing by-products. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Ca-Phi (38 kg P ha−1) on soil properties and the growth parameters of four green manure species in clay and sandy soils using Ca-Phi, TSP (triple superphosphate) and control (no fertilization) as treatments. Eight weeks after sowing, we measured aboveground biomass yield, phosphite (Phi) concentration in plant biomass, different soil P pools as well as microbial biomass nutrients. Compared to control, the addition of Ca-Phi did not negatively affect green manure yield, except for lupine (Lupinus albus L.) in clay soil. The Phi concentration in plant biomass varied across species and soil type with a maximum concentration of about 400 mg Phi kg−1 for mustard (Brassica juncea L.) in clay soil. Compared to control, TSP and Ca-Phi fertilization had a similar effect on different P pools and microbial biomass nutrients (C, N and P) although the response was soil–type dependent. In the sandy soil, after Ca-Phi addition the amount of available P (PNHCO3) increased to the same extent as in the TSP treatment (i.e. around 6 mg P kg−1) suggesting that Ca-Phi was, at least partly, oxidized. In the clay soil with high P fixing capacity, Ca-Phi promoted higher PNaHCO3 than TSP likely due to different solubility of chemical P forms. Additional studies are however required to better understand soil microbial responses and to quantify the P agronomical efficiency for the following crop under Ca-Phi fertilization.

Within a local assemblage, ecosystem engineers can have major impacts on population dynamics, community composition and ecosystem functions by transforming or creating new habitats. They act as an ecological filter altering community composition through a set of environmental variables. The impact of ants on their environment has been widely studied, but their multi-component effects (both trophic and non-trophic) have been rarely addressed. We investigated the roles of Messor barbarus , one of the commonest harvester ant species in south-western European Mediterranean grasslands. We analysed soil physico-chemical parameters, above-ground vegetation (e.g. species richness, plant community, micro-local heterogeneity, plant biomass) and above- and below-ground fauna (macrofauna, Collembola, Acari and nematodes). A clear and strong local impact of M. barbarus on soil, vegetation and fauna compartments emerges. The environmental filter is altered by modifications to soil physico-chemical properties, and the biotic filter by changes to plant communities and altered above- and below-ground fauna abundance, occurrence and community structure. The engineering activity of M. barbarus affects not only these separate ecosystem components but also the trophic and non-trophic relationships between them. By altering ecological filters at a local scale, M. barbarus creates habitat heterogeneity that may in turn increase ecological niches in these highly diverse ecosystems.

International audience; Pinus pinea is an important species for ecological and economic reasons in the Mediterranean area and especially in Lebanon. However, conditions of its natural regeneration have received little attention. Our study aimed to test the influence of soil disturbances, predation and autotoxicity on pine regeneration. A seed sowing field experiment was conducted in a mature stand in which two types of soil disturbances were tested (soil scarification and litter burning) in presence or absence of predation. In addition, a laboratory experiment evaluating the influence of litter (present, absent or burned) and green needle leachates (i.e. in order to mimic potential autotoxicity) on seed germination and seedling growth was conducted. Results showed a strong effect of soil disturbance, in particular soil scarification which promoted seedling emergence and early survival, whereas the role of predation was low. Forty to sixty days after seed installation, seedling density peaked at 14.9 ± 0.4 seedling.m in the scarification treatment, 13.1 ± 0.4 in the burning treatment and 8.4 ± 0.4 in the control treatment. However, an unexpected high mortality rate was recorded at the end of the field experiment in all treatments, as after seven months seedling density dropped to 0.2 ± 0.02. In the laboratory experiment, we emphasized an autotoxic effect of green needle aqueous extract on seed germination and seedling growth in the presence of litter. This allelopathic effect could be potentially linked to the presence of quinic acid which was measured as the major metabolite detected in needle aqueous extracts. In conclusion, we recommend soil preparation treatments to favour seedling emergence in combination with thinning to achieve seedling development on the long term.

International audience; Climate and plant diversity are major determinants of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics in decomposing plant litter. However, the direction and extent to which thesedynamics are affected by combined changes in climate and biodiversity is not well understood.We used a field experiment in a Mediterranean shrubland ranging from one to four shrub species with partial rain exclusion (-12%) to test how lower precipitation interacts with shrub species diversity to influence C and N release during decomposition. We also distinguished between first-year (0-12 months) and second-year decomposition (12-24 months) to test the hypothesis of stronger diversity effects at the beginning of the decomposition process. Litter C and N release increased with litter species richness during the first year, but not during the second year of decomposition. However, these richness effects were weak and less consistent than litter composition effects, which persisted over time and became even stronger for C release after two years of decomposition. Partial rain exclusion reduced N release by 17% only during the first year and had no effect on C release in either year. Community weighted mean (CWM) traits and functional dissimilarity (FD) of litter traits contributed both to explain litter species composition effects. These litter trait effects were not altered by partial rain exclusion, but were more important after two years than after one year of decomposition. Our findings suggest increasing trait legacy effects with ongoing decomposition. More generally, our data showed that changes in the diversity of dominant shrub species had stronger effects on C and N release during litter decomposition than a moderate reduction in precipitation.

International audience; Earthworms contribute to numerous ecosystem services provided by soils. Most of the studies focusing on the contributions of earthworms on leaf litter decomposition were conducted by comparing distinct ecological categories (epigeic, epi-anecic, anecic strict and endogeic), whereas their specific contributions within a given ecological category remains largely unknown. In this context, the aim of this study was to determine the contribution of four epi-anecic earthworm species (Lumbricus rubellus, Lumbricus festivus, Lumbricus centralis and Lumbricus terrestris) to the leaf litter decomposition of three plant species (Lolium perenne, Holcus lanatus and Corylus avellana) with contrasted litter traits located at both the soil surface and at a depth of 10 cm. Fungal and bacterial communities inhabiting epi-anecic earthworm burrows were also assessed using T-RFLP analysis. Epi-anecic earthworms improved the leaf litter mass loss solely at the soil surface, while leaf litter mass loss was mainly due to microbial activity at 10 cm deep. Leaf litter mass loss was positively correlated to the initial biomass of the epi-anecic earthworms and the intensity of this relationship was dependent on litter type. Interestingly, L. festivus seemed to have a higher contribution to surface leaf litter mass loss that was linked to a stimulation of the fungal communities in its burrows. Fungal communities were thus impacted by both the litter type and the epi-anecic earthworm identity whereas soil bacterial diversity and richness were stimulated in the earthworm burrows whatever the epi-anecic earthworm species considered. Overall, epi-anecic earthworms contributed to enhance the diversity of the drilospheric microbiota. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

International audience; Tree species diversity of forested ecosystems control the diversity of leaf litter inputs to the soil, with cascading effects on the microbial communities colonizing decomposing litter. However, the extent to which bacterial and fungal communities inhabiting the litter layer are affected by shifts in tree species diversity is not well understood. To investigate the role of litter species diversity, litter species identity and litter functional traits on bacterial and fungal communities of a typical Mediterranean oak forest, we set up a yearly field litterbag experiment that considered leaf litter mixtures of four abundant species Quercus pubescens, Acer monspessulanum, Cotinus coggygria and Pinus halepensis. We found that both bacterial and fungal communities varied strongly during decomposition but showed distinct succession patterns. Both communities were also strongly influenced by litter species diversity, litter identity and litter functional traits. The intensity and the direction of these effects varied during decomposition. Litter diversity effects were mediated by litter species composition rather than litter species richness, highlighting the importance of litter species identity - and associated litter traits - as drivers of microbial communities. Both the “mass-ratio hypothesis” measured through the community weighted mean (CWM) litter traits, and the “niche complementarity hypothesis” measured through the functional dissimilarity (FD) of litter traits, contributed to litter diversity effects, with a greater relative importance of FD compared to CWM, and with an overall stronger impact on fungal- than on bacterial-communities. Interestingly, increasing FD was related to decreasing bacterial diversity, but increasing fungal diversity. Our findings provide clear evidence that any alteration of plant species diversity produces strong cascading effects on microbial communities inhabiting the litter layer in the studied Mediterranean oak forest.

International audience; Collembola is an abundant group of soil organisms playing a major role on litter decomposition process and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Habitat structure strongly influences Collembola assemblages as plant litter physical characteristics and quantity provide structural niches and determine the outcome of their interactions with predators. Collembola are also extremely sensitive to environmental conditions such as soil temperature that control their demographic parameters and activity. In this context, increasing temperature with the ongoing climate change can have strong impact on Collembola assemblages and their responses to predation either directly by altering their behaviour or indirectly by altering their habitat structure. We therefore examined how the increase of temperature combined to the decrease of specific leaf area (SLA, a major functional plant trait) of the European common oak (Quercus robur L.) and the presence of a centipede predator (Chilopoda Lithobiidae) will affect the abundance of Folsomia candida (Collembola Isotomidae) in a 5-week microcosm experiment. Increasing temperature, decreasing SLA and presence of centipede altered F. candida abundance. We observed a significant temperature × predation interaction suggesting differential effects of increasing temperature on F. candida abundance with and without predator. We also observed a significant SLA × predation interaction highlighting that lower SLA decreases F. candida abundance only in predator presence. Finally, our findings evidenced that increasing temperature and decreasing SLA amplify the negative effect of centipede predation on F. candida abundance, suggesting that both direct and indirect effects of climate change would conjointly strengthen the top-down control of predators on preys.

Sponges are benthic organisms that are dominant in several ecosystems and known to produce a huge chemical diversity. The putative release of some specialized metabolites in the surrounding seawater is still a matter of debate, but the presence of such compounds in the environment of sponges is thought to influence the behaviour of various mobile organisms and may, thus, contribute to benthic ecosystem structuring and functioning. Underwater Mediterranean caves are characterized by stable environmental conditions and sessile species assemblages dominated by sponges. A two-choice test system was developed to assess the response of two cave-dwelling crustaceans (Hemimysis margalefi and Palaemon serratus) and two other species living in shallow water environments (Leptomysis sp. and Palaemon elegans) to various seawater treatments: control- seawater from an exposed coastline, control+ seawater coming from an underwater cave, and seawater conditioned with four Mediterranean sponges commonly found at the entrance of underwater caves (Aplysina cavernicola, Haliclona fulva, Oscarella tuberculata and Spongia officinalis) or their chemical extracts. We tested the swimming behaviour of these crustacean species in three complementary experiments: (1) control seawater vs. cave seawater; (2) control seawater vs. seawater conditioned with the sponge community, (3) control seawater vs. seawater containing chemical extracts of the same sponge community. Both cave-dwelling crustaceans were attracted by the seawater conditioned with the sponge community, while Leptomysis sp. spent more time in the control seawater and P. elegans exhibited indifferent responses. All four crustacean species avoided the seawater containing the sponge extracts. Interestingly, the response shown by the crustaceans was affected by the time of day. A comparative and untargeted metabolomic approach was applied to the surrounding seawater to identify putative chemomarkers that could explain the crustaceans' behaviours. Among other compounds found in the seawater, a family of metabolites with molecular formulae in accordance with those of oxylipin derivatives is released by sponges and may, therefore, serve as chemical cues acting as kairomones in the homing behaviour of cave-dwelling crustaceans.

International audience; Invasive plant species such as Ludwigia hexapetala might have a competitive advantage if they produce allelopathically active compounds against primary producers. Both phytoplankton and plant community structure may be affected due to different, species-specific sensitivity to allelochemicals. Moreover, such allelopathic interactions could vary over the year depending on (i) the plant's phenological stage and (ii) the abilities of the native macrophytes to suppress—or the non-native macrophytes to stimulate—the non-native macrophyte population. We tested the allelopathic effects of aqueous leaf extracts of L. hexapetala on the photosynthetic activity of three target phytoplankton strains (Scenedesmus communis, a toxic Microcystis aeruginosa strain and a non-toxic Microcystis aeruginosa strain) over three seasons of development (spring, summer and autumn). We also tested seasonal allelopathic effects of aqueous leaf extracts of both L. hexapetala (i.e. the non-native invasive species) and the native Mentha aquatica on L. hexapetala seed germination. Finally, we identified three main secondary compounds present in the aqueous leaf extracts of L. hexapetala and we tested each individual compound on the phytoplankton's photosynthetic activity and on L. hexapetala seed germination. We observed marked seasonal and species-specific patterns of L. hexapetala allelopathy on phytoplankton. The photosynthetic activities of S. communis and the toxic M. aeruginosa strain were stimulated by L. hexapetala aqueous leaf extracts in autumn and spring, respectively, whereas the non-toxic M. aeruginosa strain was strongly inhibited in these two seasons. In summer, photosynthesis of all phytoplankton strains was inhibited. The germination rate of L. hexapetala seeds was stimulated by both L. hexapetala and M. aquatica aqueous leaf extracts, especially in summer, concomitant with the strong negative effects observed on the three phytoplankton strains. Three flavonoid glycosides (myricitrin, prunin and quercitrin) were identified as the main secondary compounds present in the L. hexapetala aqueous leaf extracts. The photosynthetic activity of S. communis was slightly stimulated by the three compounds. The photosynthetic activity of the toxic M. aeruginosa strain was stimulated by myricitrin and quercitrin, whereas that of the non-toxic M. aeruginosa strain was inhibited by prunin. Finally, the germination rate and the germination velocity of L. hexapetala seeds were stimulated by myricitrin and prunin. These findings suggest that L. hexapetala could favour the photosynthetic activity of toxic cyanobacteria in spring and reduce their photosynthetic activity in summer, potentially leading to drastic changes in the phytoplankton communities and therewith ecological functioning of invaded ponds. Moreover, the stimulation of its seed germination could give a strong competitive advantage to L. hexapetala, thus promoting its invasiveness. © 2018 John Wiley and Sons Ltd

International audience; 1. Plant species coexisting in direct contact produce patches of mixed litters. Mixing litter sometimes synergistically accelerates and sometimes antagonistically decelerates litter decomposition, but we insufficiently understand why. 2. Here, we hypothesize that antagonism or synergy within a mixed-litter patch depends on the neighbouring litter matrix. Specifically, phylogenetical or functional dissimilarity within neighbouring litter, or among patch and neighbouring litter, may favour complementarity and thereby within-patch synergy. 3. From a pool of 20 grassland species, we created 120 mixed-litter patches of two species, and exposed these patches to neighbourhoods in long-term grassland mesocosms of different functional and phylogenetic compositions. 4. We found 60% less (antagonism) to 80% more (synergy) decomposition than expected from single-species litters. Functionally similar, and grass-dominated, mixed-litter patches decomposed most synergistically. Synergy was most strongly favoured by phylogenetic distance among neighbours and functional dissimilarity between neighbours and patch. 5. Synthesis. Our results show that the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning was context-dependent. We suggest that the coexistence of grasses and the formation of phylogenetically diverse, functionally distinct, patchy vegetation may be reinforced by synergistic nutrient recycling.

Questions Global change projections predict biodiversity changes and increased drought intensity in the Mediterranean Basin in the decades to come. This will presumably affect plant performances, plant community composition, and ecosystem functioning. Shrublands are widespread in the Mediterranean area, yet we have no clear understanding of shrubland responses to the combined effects of increased drought and changes in plant diversity. Location Natural Mediterranean shrubland, Marseille, South of France (43°22′ N; 5°25′ E). Methods A rainfall manipulation experiment was conducted in a Mediterranean shrubland in southern France to examine the performances of four dominant shrub species in response to increased drought. The study assemblages spanned a gradient of 4 shrub richness levels (mono-, bi-, tri-, and tetraspecific plant mixtures) and 15 different shrub combinations. Throughout the two years of non-destructive experiment (2012-2014), we measured plant litterfall, stand necromass and plant cover of the 4 dominant plant species: Cistus albidus, Quercus coccifera, Rosmarinus officinalis and Ulex parviflorus. Results Increasing shrub richness levels in the plant community led to higher litter production by all 4 species and a decrease of dry shoots for Quercus and Ulex. Shrub species responses were affected by the rain exclusion treatment, but the effects were mainly dependent on shrub richness level. In monospecific plots, aggravated drought conditions led to a decrease of litterfall of Cistus, Rosmarinus and Ulex and an increase of necromass of all 4 species. In general, these negative drought effects disappeared as number of shrub species in the plant community increased. Under rain exclusion treatment, Rosmarinus cover decreased in monospecific plots whereas Quercus cover increased in bispecific plots and Rosmarinus cover increased in tetraspecific plots. We observed two drought tolerance patterns, with Quercus and Rosmarinus being more tolerant species and Ulex and Cistus less tolerant. Conclusions The magnitude of drought effects on shrub performance is species-specific, and plant species combination-dependent. High shrub richness levels could modulate the negative impacts of aggravated drought conditions. Our results pointed to a probable shift of interspecific relationships in response to water resource shortage. As drought impacts are not mediated in low-diversity communities, species-specific responses to drier conditions could lead to shifts in plant community composition favoring the most drought-resistant species, i.e. Quercus and Rosmarinus here. International audience; A major challenge of current ecological research is to determine the responses of plant and animal communities and ecosystem processes to future environmental conditions. Ecosystems respond to climate change in complex ways, and the outcome may significantly depend on biodiversity. We studied the relative effects of enhanced drought and of plant species mixture on soil biota and on litter decomposition in a Mediterranean oak forest. We experimentally reduced precipitation, accounting for seasonal precipitation variability, and created a single-species litter (Quercus pubescens), a two-species litter mixture (Q. pubescens + Acer monspessulanum) and a three-species litter mixture (Q. pubescens + A. monspessulanum + Cotinus coggygria).In general, drier conditions affected decomposers negatively, directly by reducing fungal biomass and detritivorous mesofauna, and also indirectly by increasing the predation pressure on detritivorous mesofauna by predatory mesofauna. This is reflected under drier conditions in that Collembola abundance decreased more strongly than Acari abundance. One Collembola group (i.e. Neelipleona) even disappeared completely. Increased drought strongly decreased litter decomposition rates. Mixed litter with two and three plant species positively affected soil biota communities and led to a more efficient litter decomposition process, probably through a greater litter quality. Faster decomposition in mixed litter can thus compensate slower decomposition rates under drier condition. Synthesis. Our results highlight that, within our study system, drier climate strongly impacts on soil biodiversity and hence litter decomposition. Species-rich litter may mitigate such a decline in decomposition rates. Diverse plant communities should hence be maintained to reduce shifts in ecosystem functioning under climate change.
