Coherence properties are central to quantum systems and are at the heart of phenomena such as superconductivity. Here we study coherence properties of an ultracold Bose gas in a two-dimensional optical lattice across the thermal phase transition. To infer the phase coherence and phase fluctuation profile, we use direct matter-wave imaging of higher Talbot revivals as well as a new phase microscope based on a site-resolved mapping of phase fluctuations to density fluctuations during matter-wave imaging. We observe the algebraic decay of the phase correlations in the superfluid phase and a linear temperature increase of the exponent. As the observed occurrence for planets or stellar companions orbiting low and intermediate-mass evolved stars is increasing, so does the importance of understanding and evaluating the strength of their interactions. One of the fundamental mechanisms to understand this interaction is the tidal dissipation in these stars, as it is one of the engines of orbital/rotational evolution of star-planet/star-star systems. This article builds on previous works studying the evolution of the tidal dissipation along the pre-MS and the MS, which have shown the strong link between the structural and rotational evolution of stars and tidal dissipation. This article provides for the first time a complete picture of tidal dissipation along the entire evolution of low and intermediate-mass stars, including the advanced phases of evolution. Using stellar evolutionary models, the internal structure of the star is computed from the pre-MS all the way up to the white dwarf phase, for stars with initial mass between 1 and 4 Msun. Tidal dissipation is separated into two components: the dissipation of the equilibrium (non-wavelike) tide and the dissipation of the dynamical (wavelike) tide. For evolved stars the dynamical tide is constituted by progressive internal gravity waves. The significance of both the equilibrium and dynamical tide dissipation becomes apparent within distinct domains of the parameter space. The dissipation of the equilibrium tide is dominant when the star is large in size or the companion is far away from the star. Conversely the dissipation of the dynamical tide is important when the star is small in size or the companion is close to the star. Both the equilibrium and the dynamical tides are important in evolved stars, and therefore both need to be taken into account when studying the tidal dissipation in evolved stars and the evolution of planetary or/and stellar companions orbiting them.

Internal gravity waves (IGWs) are likely to cause mixing in stellar interiors. Studies show that the mixing by these waves changes drastically across age and mass (Varghese et al. 2023, arXiv:2211.06432). Here, we study the effect of rotation on this wave mixing by considering a 7 M$_{\odot}$ model at ZAMS and midMS. We compare the mixing profiles at a range of rotation rates ($1\times 10^{-5}$, $2\times 10^{-5}$, $3\times 10^{-5}$, $4\times 10^{-5}$ and $1\times 10^{-4}$ rad.s$^{-1}$) and observe that the mixing decreases with decreasing Rossby number. In 2013 a dearth of close-in planets around fast-rotating host stars was found using statistical tests on Kepler data. The addition of more Kepler and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) systems in 2022 filled this region of the diagram of stellar rotation period (Prot) versus the planet orbital period (Porb). We revisited the Prot extraction of Kepler planet-host stars, we classify the stars by their spectral type, and we studied their Prot-Porb relations. We only used confirmed exoplanet systems to minimize biases. In order to learn about the physical processes at work, we used the star-planet evolution code ESPEM (French acronym for Evolution of Planetary Systems and Magnetism) to compute a realistic population synthesis of exoplanet systems and compared them with observations. Because ESPEM works with a single planet orbiting around a single main-sequence star, we limit our study to this population of Kepler observed systems filtering out binaries, evolved stars, and multi-planets. We find in both, observations and simulations, the existence of a dearth in close-in planets orbiting around fast-rotating stars, with a dependence on the stellar spectral type (F, G, and K), which is a proxy of the mass in our sample of stars. There is a change in the edge of the dearth as a function of the spectral type (and mass). It moves towards shorter Prot as temperature (and mass) increases, making the dearth look smaller. Realistic formation hypotheses included in the model and the proper treatment of tidal and magnetic migration are enough to qualitatively explain the dearth of hot planets around fast-rotating stars and the uncovered trend with spectral type., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 13 pages, 8 figures

Binary systems constitute a valuable astrophysics tool for testing our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. Systems containing a oscillating component are interesting as asteroseismology offers independent parameters for the oscillating component that aid the analysis. About 150 of such systems are known in the literature. To enlarge the sample of these benchmark objects, we crossmatch the Two-Body-Orbit Catalogue (TBO) of Gaia DR3, with catalogs of confirmed solar-like oscillators on the main-sequence and red-giant phase from NASA Kepler and TESS. We obtain 954 new binary system candidates hosting solar-like oscillators, of which 45 and 909 stars are on the main sequence and red-giant, resp., including 2 new red giants in eclipsing systems. 918 oscillators in potentially long-periodic systems are reported. We increase the sample size of known solar-like oscillators in binary systems by an order of magnitude. We present the seismic properties of the full sample and conclude that the grand majority of the orbital elements in the TBO is physically reasonable. 82% of all TBO binary candidates with multiple times with APOGEE are confirmed from radial-velocity measurement. However, we suggest that due to instrumental noise of the TESS satellite the seismically inferred masses and radii of stars with $\nu_\textrm{max}$$\lesssim$30$\mu$Hz could be significantly overestimated. For 146 giants the seismically inferred evolutionary state has been determined and shows clear differences in their distribution in the orbital parameters, which are accounted the accumulative effect of the equilibrium tide acting in these evolved binary systems. For other 146 systems hosting oscillating stars values for the orbital inclination were found in the TBO. TOI 1416 (BD+42 2504, HIP 70705) is a V=10 late G or early K-type dwarf star with transits detected by TESS. Radial velocities verify the presence of the transiting planet TOI-1416 b, with a period of 1.07d, a mass of $3.48 M_{Earth}$ and a radius of $1.62 R_{Earth}$, implying a slightly sub-Earth density of $4.50$ g cm$^{-3}$. The RV data also further indicate a tentative planet c with a period of 27.4 or 29.5 days, whose nature cannot be verified due to strong suspicions about contamination by a signal related to the Moon's synodic period of 29.53 days. The near-USP (Ultra Short Period) planet TOI-1416 b is a typical representative of a short-period and hot ($T_{eq} \approx$ 1570 K) super-Earth like planet. A planet model of an interior of molten magma containing a significant fraction of dissolved water provides a plausible explanation for its composition, and its atmosphere could be suitable for transmission spectroscopy with JWST. The position of TOI-1416 b within the radius-period distribution corroborates that USPs with periods of less than one day do not form any special group of planets. Rather, this implies that USPs belong to a continuous distribution of super-Earth like planets with periods ranging from the shortest known ones up to ~ 30 days, whose period-radius distribution is delimitated against larger radii by the Neptune desert and by the period-radius valley that separates super-Earths from sub-Neptune planets. In the abundance of small-short periodic planets against period, a plateau between periods of 0.6 to 1.4 days has however become notable that is compatible with the low-eccentricity formation channel. For the Neptune desert, its lower limits required a revision due to the increasing population of short period planets and new limits are provided. Oscillating red-giant stars in binary systems are an ideal testbed for investigating the structure and evolution of stars in the advanced phases of evolution. With 83 known red giants in binary systems, of which only ~40 have determined global seismic parameters and orbital parameters, the sample is small compared to the numerous known oscillating stars. The detection of red-giant binary systems is typically obtained from the signature of stellar binarity in space photometry. The time base of such data biases the detection towards systems with shorter periods and orbits of insufficient size to allow a red giant to fully extend as it evolves up the red-giant branch. Consequently, the sample shows an excess of H-shell burning giants while containing very few stars in the He-core burning phase. From the ninth catalogue of spectroscopic binary orbits (SB9), we identified candidate systems hosting a red-giant primary component. Searching space photometry from the NASA missions Kepler, K2, and TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) as well as the BRITE (BRIght Target Explorer) constellation mission, we find 99 systems, which were previously unknown to host an oscillating giant component. The revised search strategy allowed us to extend the range of orbital periods of systems hosting oscillating giants up to 26000days. Such wide orbits allow a rich population of He-core burning primaries, which are required for a complete view of stellar evolution from binary studies. Tripling the size of the sample of known oscillating red-giant stars in binary systems is an important step towards an ensemble approach for seismology and tidal studies. Multi-dimensional (magneto-)hydrodynamical simulations of physical processes in stellar interiors depend on a multitude of uncalibrated free parameters, which set the spatial and time scales of their computations. We aim to provide an asteroseismic calibration of the wave and convective Rossby numbers, and of the stiffness at the interface between the convective core and radiative envelope of intermediate-mass stars. We deduce these quantities for rotating dwarfs from the observed properties of their identified gravity and gravito-inertial modes. We rely on near-core rotation rates and asteroseismic models of 26 B- and 37 F-type dwarf pulsators derived from 4-year Kepler space photometry, high-resolution spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry in the literature to deduce their convective and wave Rossby numbers. We compute the stiffness at the convection/radiation interface from the inferred maximum buoyancy frequency at the interface and the convective turnover frequency in the core. We use those asteroseismically inferred quantities to make predictions of convective penetration levels, local flux levels of gravito-inertial waves triggered by the convective core, and of the cores' potential rotational and magnetic states. Our sample of 63 gravito-inertial mode pulsators covers near-core rotation rates from almost zero up to the critical rate. The frequencies of their identified modes lead to models with stiffness values between $10^{2.69}$ and $10^{3.60}$ for the B-type pulsators, while those of F-type stars cover the range from $10^{3.47}$ to $10^{4.52}$. The convective Rossby numbers derived from the maximum convective diffusion coefficient in the convective core, based on mixing length theory and a value of the mixing length coefficient relevant for these pulsators, vary between $10^{-2.3}$ and $10^{-0.8}$ for B-type stars and $10^{-3}$ and $10^{-1.5}$ for F-type stars. [Abridged] Most exoplanets detected so far are close-in planets, which are likely to be affected by tidal dissipation in their host star. To get a complete picture of the evolution of star-planet systems one needs to consider the impact of tides within both stellar radiative and convective zones. We aim to provide a general formalism to assess tidal dissipation in stellar radiative zones for all spectral types, allowing for the study of the dynamics of a given system throughout stellar evolution. We investigate the influence of stellar structure and evolution on tidal dissipation in the radiative core of low-mass stars. From the study of adiabatic oscillations throughout the star, we compute the energy flux transported by progressive internal gravity waves and the induced tidal torque. We then study the influence of stellar structure and evolution on tidal dissipation of solar-type stars from the pre-main sequence (PMS) to the red giant branch (RGB). For a given star-planet system, tidal dissipation reaches a maximum value on the pre-main sequence for all stellar masses. On the main sequence (MS), it decreases to become almost constant. The dissipation is then several orders of magnitude smaller for F-type stars than for G and K-type stars. During the Sub-Giant phase and the RGB, tidal dissipation increases by several orders of magnitude, along with the expansion of the stellar envelope. We show that the dissipation of the dynamical tide in the convective zone dominates the evolution of the system during most of the PMS and the beginning of the main sequence. Tidal dissipation in the radiative zone then becomes the strongest contribution during the Sub-Giant phase and the RGB. The discovery of the moderate differential rotation between the core and the envelope of evolved solar-like stars could be the signature of a strong magnetic field trapped inside the radiative interior. The population of intermediate-mass red giants presenting a surprisingly low-amplitude of their mixed modes could also arise from the effect of an internal magnetic field. Indeed, stars more massive than about 1.1Ms are known to develop a convective core during their main sequence, which could relax into a strong fossil magnetic field trapped inside the core of the star for the rest of its evolution. The observations of mixed modes can constitute an excellent probe of the deepest layers of evolved solar-like stars. The magnetic perturbation on mixed modes may thus be visible in asteroseismic data. To unravel which constraints can be obtained from observations, we theoretically investigate the effects of a plausible mixed axisymmetric magnetic field with various amplitudes on the mixed-mode frequencies of evolved solar-like stars. The first-order frequency perturbations are computed for dipolar and quadrupolar mixed modes. These computations are carried out for a range of stellar ages, masses, and metallicities. We show that typical fossil-field strengths of 0.1-1 MG, consistent with the presence of a dynamo in the convective core during the main sequence, provoke significant asymmetries on mixed-mode frequency multiplets during the red-giant branch. We show that these signatures may be detectable in asteroseismic data for field amplitudes small enough for the amplitude of the modes not to be affected by the conversion of gravity into Alfven waves inside the magnetised interior. Eclipsing binaries (EBs) are unique benchmarks for stellar evolution. On the one hand, detached EBs hosting at least one star with detectable solar-like oscillations constitute ideal test objects to calibrate asteroseismic measurements. On the other hand, the oscillations and surface activity of stars that belong to EBs offer unique information about the evolution of binary systems. This paper builds upon previous works dedicated to red giant stars (RG) in EBs -- 20 known systems so far -- discovered by the NASA Kepler mission. Here we report the discovery of 16 RGs in EBs also from the Kepler data. This new sample includes three SB2-EBs with oscillations and six close systems where the RG display a clear surface activity and complete oscillation suppression. Based on dedicated high-resolution spectroscopic observations (Apache Point Observatory, Observatoire de Haute Provence), we focus on three main aspects. From the extended sample of 14 SB2-EBs, we first confirm that the simple application of the asteroseismic scaling relations to RGs overestimates masses and radii of RGs, by about 15% and 5%. This bias can be reduced by employing either new asteroseismic reference values for RGs, or model-based corrections of the asteroseismic parameters. Secondly, we confirm that close binarity leads to a high level of photometric modulation (up to 10%), and a suppression of solar-like oscillations. In particular, we show that it reduces the lifetime of radial modes by a factor of up to 10. Thirdly, we use our 16 new systems to complement previous observational studies that aimed at constraining tidal dissipation in interacting binaries. In particular, we identify systems with circular orbits despite relatively young ages, which suggests exploring complementary tidal dissipation mechanisms in the future. Quantifying tidal interactions in close-in two-body systems is of prime interest since they have a crucial impact on the architecture and on the rotational history of the bodies. Various studies have shown that the dissipation of tides in either body is very sensitive to its structure and to its dynamics, like differential rotation which exists in the outer convective enveloppe of solar-like stars and giant gaseous planets. In particular, tidal waves may strongly interact with zonal flows at the so-called corotation resonances, where the wave's Doppler-shifted frequency cancels out. We aim to provide a deep physical understanding of the dynamics of tidal inertial waves at corotation resonances, in the presence of differential rotation profiles typical of low-mass stars and giant planets. By developping an inclined shearing box, we investigate the propagation and the transmission of free inertial waves at corotation, and more generally at critical levels, which are singularities in the governing wave differential equation. Through the construction of an invariant called the wave action flux, we identify different regimes of wave transmission at critical levels, which are confirmed with a one-dimensional three-layer numerical model. We find that inertial waves can be either fully transmitted, strongly damped, or even amplified after crossing a critical level. The occurrence of these regimes depends on the assumed profile of differential rotation, on the nature as well as the latitude of the critical level, and on wave parameters such as the inertial frequency and the longitudinal and vertical wavenumbers. Waves can thus either deposit their action flux to the fluid when damped at critical levels, or they can extract action flux to the fluid when amplified at critical levels. Stars more massive than $\sim 1.3$ M$_\odot$ are known to develop a convective core during the main-sequence: the dynamo process triggered by this convection could be the origin of a strong magnetic field inside the core of the star, trapped when it becomes stably stratified and for the rest of its evolution. The presence of highly magnetized white dwarfs strengthens the hypothesis of buried fossil magnetic fields inside the core of evolved low-mass stars. If such a fossil field exists, it should affect the mixed modes of red giants as they are sensitive to processes affecting the deepest layers of these stars. The impact of a magnetic field on dipolar oscillations modes was one of Pr. Michael J. Thompson's research topics during the 90s when preparing the helioseismic SoHO space mission. As the detection of gravity modes in the Sun is still controversial, the investigation of the solar oscillation modes did not provide any hint of the existence of a magnetic field in the solar radiative core. Today we have access to the core of evolved stars thanks to the asteroseismic observation of mixed modes from CoRoT, Kepler, K2 and TESS missions. The idea of applying and generalizing the work done for the Sun came from discussions with Pr. Michael Thompson in early 2018 before we loss him. Following the path we drew together, we theoretically investigate the effect of a stable axisymmetric mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic field, aligned with the rotation axis of the star, on the mixed modes frequencies of a typical evolved low-mass star. This enables us to estimate the magnetic perturbations to the eigenfrequencies of mixed dipolar modes, depending on the magnetic field strength and the evolutionary state of the star. We conclude that strong magnetic fields of $\sim$ 1MG should perturbe the mixed-mode frequency pattern enough for its effects to be detectable inside current asteroseismic data., Comment: Conference proceeding, in press, 7 pages, 3 figures

Transport processes occurring in the radiative interior of solar-type stars are evidenced by the surface variation of light elements, in particular Li, and the evolution of their rotation rates. For the Sun, inversions of helioseismic data indicate that the radial profile of angular velocity in its radiative zone is nearly uniform, which implies the existence of angular momentum transport mechanisms. While there are many independent transport models for angular momentum and chemical species, there is a lack of self-consistent theories that permit stellar evolution models to simultaneously match the present-day observations of solar lithium abundances and radial rotation profiles. We explore how additional transport processes can improve the agreement between evolutionary models of rotating stars and observations. We constrain the resulting models by simultaneously using the evolution of the surface rotation rate and Li abundance in the solar-type stars of open clusters, and the solar surface and internal rotation profile as inverted from helioseismology. We show the relevance of penetrative convection for the depletion of Li. The rotational dependence of the depth of penetrative convection yields an anti-correlation between the initial rotation rate and Li depletion in our models of solar-type stars that is in agreement with the observed trend. Simultaneously, the addition of an ad hoc vertical viscosity leads to efficient transport of angular momentum between the core and the envelope. We also self-consistently compute for the first time the thickness of the tachocline and find that it is compatible with helioseismic estimations. However, the main sequence depletion of Li in solar-type stars is only reproduced when adding a parametric turbulent mixing below the convective envelope. Gravito-inertial waves are excited at the interface of convective and radiative regions and by the Reynolds stresses in the bulk of the convection zones of rotating stars and planets. Such waves have notable asteroseismic signatures in the frequency spectra of rotating stars, particularly among rapidly rotating early-type stars, which provides a means of probing their internal structure and dynamics. They can also transport angular momentum, chemical species, and energy from the excitation region to where they dissipate in radiative regions. To estimate the excitation and convective parameter dependence of the amplitude of those waves, a monomodal model for stellar and planetary convection as described in Paper I is employed, which provides the magnitude of the rms convective velocity as a function of rotation rate. With this convection model, two channels for wave driving are considered: excitation at a boundary between convectively stable and unstable regions and excitation due to Reynolds-stresses. Parameter regimes are found where the sub-inertial waves may carry a significant energy flux, depending upon the convective Rossby number, the interface stiffness, and the wave frequency. The super-inertial waves can also be enhanced, but only for convective Rossby numbers near unity. Interfacially excited waves have a peak energy flux near the lower cutoff frequency when the convective Rossby number of the flows that excite them are below a critical Rossby number that depends upon the stiffness of the interface, whereas that flux decreases when the convective Rossby number is larger than this critical Rossby number., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted in ApJ

HD49330 is a Be star that underwent an outburst during its five-month observation with the CoRoT satellite. An analysis of its light curve revealed several independent p and g pulsation modes, in addition to showing that the amplitude of the modes is directly correlated with the outburst. We modelled the results obtained with CoRoT. We modelled the flattening of the structure of the star due to rapid rotation in two ways: Chandrasekhar-Milne's expansion and 2D structure computed with ROTORC. We then modelled kappa-driven pulsations. We also adapted the formalism of the excitation and amplitude of stochastically excited gravito-inertial modes to rapidly rotating stars, and we modelled those pulsations as well. We find that while pulsation p modes are excited by the kappa mechanism, the observed g modes are a result of stochastic excitation. In contrast, g and r waves are stochastically excited in the convective core and transport angular momentum to the surface, increasing its rotation rate. This destabilises the external layers of the star, which then emits transient stochastically excited g waves. These transient waves produce most of the low-frequency signal detected in the CoRoT data and ignite the outburst. During this unstable phase, p modes disappear at the surface because their cavity is broken. Following the outburst and ejection of the surface layer, relaxation occurs, making the transient g waves disappear and p modes reappear. This work includes the first coherent model of stochastically excited gravito-inertial pulsation modes in a rapidly rotating Be star. It provides an explanation for the correlation between the variation in the amplitude of frequencies detected in the CoRoT data and the occurrence of an outburst. The dissipation of the kinetic energy of wave-like tidal flows within the convective envelope of low-mass stars is one of the key physical mechanisms that shapes the orbital and rotational dynamics of short-period exoplanetary systems. Although low-mass stars are magnetically active objects, the question of how the star's magnetic field impacts large-scale tidal flows and the excitation, propagation and dissipation of tidal waves still remains open. Our goal is to investigate the impact of stellar magnetism on the forcing of tidal waves, and their propagation and dissipation in the convective envelope of low-mass stars as they evolve. We have estimated the amplitude of the magnetic contribution to the forcing and dissipation of tidally induced magneto-inertial waves throughout the structural and rotational evolution of low-mass stars (from M to F-type). For this purpose, we have used detailed grids of rotating stellar models computed with the stellar evolution code STAREVOL. The amplitude of dynamo-generated magnetic fields is estimated via physical scaling laws at the base and the top of the convective envelope. We find that the large-scale magnetic field of the star has little influence on the excitation of tidal waves in the case of nearly-circular orbits and coplanar hot-Jupiter planetary systems, but that it has a major impact on the way waves are dissipated. Our results therefore indicate that a full magneto-hydrodynamical treatment of the propagation and dissipation of tidal waves is needed to properly assess the impact of star-planet tidal interactions throughout the evolutionary history of low-mass stars hosting short-period massive planets., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

$\varepsilon$ Lupi A is a binary system consisting of two main sequence early B-type stars Aa and Ab in a short period, moderately eccentric orbit. The close binary pair is the only doubly-magnetic massive binary currently known. Using photometric data from the BRITE-Constellation we identify a modest heartbeat variation. Combining the photometry with radial velocities of both components we determine a full orbital solution including empirical masses and radii. These results are compared with stellar evolution models as well as interferometry and the differences discussed. We also find additional photometric variability at several frequencies, finding it unlikely these frequencies can be caused by tidally excited oscillations. We do, however, determine that these signals are consistent with gravity mode pulsations typical for slowly pulsating B stars. Finally we discuss how the evolution of this system will be affected by magnetism, determining that tidal interactions will still be dominant., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Context. Stellar magnetic fields are one of the candidates often invoked to explain the missing transport of angular momentum observed in the models of stellar interiors. However, the properties of an internal magnetic field and the consequences of its presence on stellar evolution are largely unknown. Aims. We study the effect of an axisymmetric internal magnetic field on the frequency of gravity modes in rapidly rotating stars to check whether gravity modes can be used to detect and probe such a field. Methods. Rotation is taken into account using the traditional approximation of rotation and the effect of the magnetic field is computed using a perturbative approach. As a proof of concept, we compute frequency shifts due to a mixed (i.e. with both poloidal and toroidal components) fossil magnetic field for a representative model of a known magnetic, rapidly rotating, slowly pulsating B-type star, namely HD 43317. Results. We find that frequency shifts induced by the magnetic field scale with the square of its amplitude. A magnetic field with a near-core strength of order 150 kG (which is consistent with the observed surface field strength of order 1 kG) leads to signatures that are detectable in period spacings for high-radial-order gravity modes. Conclusions. The predicted frequency shifts can be used to constrain internal magnetic fields and offers the potential for a significant step forward in our interpretation of the observed structure of gravity-mode period spacing patterns in rapidly rotating stars., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted in A&A

Binary stars are places of complex stellar interactions. While all binaries are in principle converging towards a state of circularization, many eccentric systems are found even in advanced stellar phases. In this work we discuss the sample of binaries with a red-giant component, discovered from observations of the NASA Kepler space mission. We first discuss which effects and features of tidal interactions are detectable in photometry, spectroscopy and the seismic analysis. In a second step, the sample of binary systems observed with Kepler, is compared to the well studied sample of Verbunt & Phinney (1995, hereafter VP95). Internal gravity waves propagate in stellar radiative zones and transport angular momentum throughout the evolution of stars, shaping the internal rotation pro le of these regions. We use the analytical study of Andre\'e et al. (2018) to assess the impact of rotation and differential rotation on the thermal dissipation of internal gravity waves near the equatorial plane, without making any assumption on the relative strength of rotation relative to that of the background stable stratification. This dissipation is one of the mechanisms allowing a wave-induced deposition/extraction of angular momentum. Here, we apply the analysis to a 3 solar mass star of which we have computed the one-dimensional evolution, from the pre-main sequence to the end of the main sequence. With the discovery over the last two decades of a large diversity of exoplanetary systems, it is now of prime importance to characterize star-planet interactions and how such systems evolve. We address this question by studying systems formed by a solar-like star and a close-in planet. We focus on the stellar wind spinning down the star along its main sequence phase and tidal interaction causing orbital evolution of the systems. Despite recent significant advances in these fields, all current models use parametric descriptions to study at least one of these effects. Our objective is to introduce simultaneously ab-initio prescriptions of the tidal and braking torques, so as to improve our understanding of the underlying physics. We develop a 1D numerical model of coplanar circular star-planet systems taking into account stellar structural changes, wind braking and tidal interaction and implement it in a code called ESPEM. We follow the secular evolution of the stellar rotation assuming a bi-layer internal structure, and of the semi-major axis of the orbit. After comparing our predictions to recent observations and models, we perform tests to emphasize the contribution of ab-initio prescriptions. Our secular model of stellar wind braking reproduces well the recent observations of stellar rotation in open clusters. Our results show that a planet can affect the rotation of its host star and that the resulting spin-up or spin-down depends on the orbital semi-major axis and on the joint influence of magnetic and tidal effects. The ab-initio prescription for tidal dissipation that we used predicts fast outward migration of massive planet orbiting fast-rotating young stars. Finally, we provide the reader with a criterion based on the system's characteristics that allows us to assess whether or not the planet will undergo orbital decay due to tidal interaction., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Internal waves propagating in stellar radiative zones can lead to efficient angular momentum transport, that should occur throughout the whole lifetime of stars. They thus play a key role in shaping the internal rotation profile of these regions, that can be probed by asteroseismology. We present a new analytical study of their propagation and dissipation near the equatorial plane. We include the effects of rotation and differential rotation without making any assumption on their relative strength relative to that of the background stable stratification. This analytical framework allows in principle to scan the efficiency of the wave-induced transport of angular momentum. The computations goes from the pre-main sequence, during which the restoring forces associated with rotation and stratification can be of the same order, to the later stages of evolution, for which stratification tends to dominate over rotation. Tidal interaction governs the redistribution of angular momentum in close binary stars and planetary systems and determines the systems evolution towards the possible equilibrium state. Turbulent friction acting on the equilibrium tide in the convective envelope of low-mass stars is known to have a strong impact on this exchange of angular momentum in binaries. Moreover, theoretical modelling in recent literature as well as presented in this paper suggests that the dissipation of the dynamical tide, constituted of tidal inertial waves propagating in the convective envelope, is weak compared to the dissipation of the equilibrium tide during the red-giant phase. This prediction is confirmed when we apply the equilibrium-tide formalism developed by Zahn (1977), Verbunt & Phinney (1995), and Remus, Mathis & Zahn (2012) onto the sample of all known red-giant binaries observed by the NASA Kepler mission. Moreover, the observations are adequately explained by only invoking the equilibrium tide dissipation. Such ensemble analysis also benefits from the seismic characterisation of the oscillating components and surface rotation rates. Through asteroseismology, previous claims of the eccentricity as an evolutionary state diagnostic are discarded. Context. While rotation has a major impact on stellar structure and evolution, its effects are not well understood. Thanks to high- quality and long timebase photometric observations obtained with recent space missions, we are now able to study stellar rotation more precisely. Aims. We aim to constrain radial differential rotation profiles in gamma Doradus (gamma Dor) stars, and to develop new theoretical seismic diagnosis for such stars with rapid and potentially non-uniform rotation. Methods. We derive a new asymptotic description which accounts for the impact of weak differential near-core rotation on gravity- mode period spacings. The theoretical predictions are illustrated from pulsation computations with the code GYRE and compared with observations of gamma Dor stars. When possible, we also derive the surface rotation rates in these stars by detecting and analysing signatures of rotational modulation, and compute the core-to-surface rotation ratios. Results. Stellar rotation has to be strongly differential before its effects on period spacing patterns can be detected, unless multiple period spacing patterns can be compared. Six stars in our sample exhibit a single unexplained period spacing pattern of retrograde modes. We hypothesise that these are Yanai modes. Finally, we find signatures of rotational spot modulation in the photometric data of eight targets. Conclusions. If only one period spacing pattern is detected and analysed for a star, it is difficult to detect differential rotation. A rigidly rotating model will often provide the best solution. Differential rotation can only be detected when multiple period spacing patterns have been found for a single star or its surface rotation rate is known as well. This is the case for eight stars in our sample, revealing surface-to-core rotation ratios between 0.95 and 1.05., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. We report the discovery and characterization of HD 89345b (K2-234b; EPIC 248777106b), a Saturn-sized planet orbiting a slightly evolved star. HD 89345 is a bright star ($V = 9.3$ mag) observed by the K2 mission with one-minute time sampling. It exhibits solar-like oscillations. We conducted asteroseismology to determine the parameters of the star, finding the mass and radius to be $1.12^{+0.04}_{-0.01}~M_\odot$ and $1.657^{+0.020}_{-0.004}~R_\odot$, respectively. The star appears to have recently left the main sequence, based on the inferred age, $9.4^{+0.4}_{-1.3}~\mathrm{Gyr}$, and the non-detection of mixed modes. The star hosts a "warm Saturn" ($P = 11.8$~days, $R_p = 6.86 \pm 0.14~R_\oplus$). Radial-velocity follow-up observations performed with the FIES, HARPS, and HARPS-N spectrographs show that the planet has a mass of $35.7 \pm 3.3~M_\oplus$. The data also show that the planet's orbit is eccentric ($e\approx 0.2$). An investigation of the rotational splitting of the oscillation frequencies of the star yields no conclusive evidence on the stellar inclination angle. We further obtained Rossiter-McLaughlin observations, which result in a broad posterior of the stellar obliquity. The large-scale magnetic fields detected at the surface of about 10% of hot stars extend into the stellar interior, where they may alter the structure. Deep inner regions of stars are only observable using asteroseismology. Here, we investigated the pulsating magnetic B3.5V star HD43317, inferred its interior properties and assessed whether the dipolar magnetic field with a surface strength of $B_p = 1312 \pm 332$G caused different properties compared to those of non-magnetic stars. We analysed the latest version of the star's 150d CoRoT light curve and extracted 35 significant frequencies, 28 of which were determined to be independent and not related to the known surface rotation period of $P_{\rm rot} = 0.897673$d. We performed forward seismic modelling based on non-magnetic, non-rotating 1D MESA models and the adiabatic module of the pulsation code GYRE, utilizing a grid-based approach. Our aim was to estimate the stellar mass, age, and convective core overshooting. The GYRE calculations were done for uniform rotation with $P_{\rm rot}$. This modelling was able to explain 16 of the 28 frequencies as gravity modes belonging to retrograde modes with $(\ell, m) = (1, -1)$ and $(2, -1)$ period spacing patterns and one distinct prograde $(2,2)$ mode. The modelling resulted in a stellar mass $M_{\star} = 5.8^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$$\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, a central hydrogen mass fraction $X_c = 0.54^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$, and exponential convective core overshooting parameter $f_{\rm ov} = 0.004^{+0.014}_{-0.002}$. We present the initial results of the Large Impact of magnetic Fields on the Evolution of hot stars (LIFE) project. The focus of this project is the search for magnetic fields in evolved OBA giants and supergiants with visual magnitudes between 4 and 8, with the aim to investigate how the magnetic fields observed in upper main sequence (MS) stars evolve from the MS until the late post-MS stages. In this paper, we present spectropolarimetric observations of 15 stars observed using the ESPaDOnS instrument of the CFHT. For each star, we have determined the fundamental parameters and have used stellar evolution models to calculate their mass, age and radius. Using the LSD technique, we have produced averaged line profiles for each star. From these profiles, we have measured the longitudinal magnetic field strength and have calculated the detection probability. We report the detection of magnetic fields in two stars of our sample: a weak field of $B_l=1.0\pm0.2\,$G is detected in the post-MS A5 star 19$\,$Aur and a stronger field of $B_l=-230\,\pm\,10\,$G is detected in the MS/post-MS B8/9 star HR$\,$3042., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Binaries in double-lined spectroscopic systems provide a homogeneous set of stars. Differences of parameters, such as age or initial conditions, which otherwise would have strong impact on the stellar evolution, can be neglected. The observed differences are determined by the difference in stellar mass between the two components. The mass ratio can be determined with much higher accuracy than the actual stellar mass. In this work, we aim to study the eccentric binary system KIC9163796, whose two components are very close in mass and both are low-luminosity red-giant stars from four years of Kepler space photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy with Hermes. Mass and radius of the primary were determined through asteroseismology to be 1.39+/-0.06 Mo and 5.35+/-0.09 Ro, resp. From spectral disentangling the mass ratio was found to be 1.015+/-0.005 and that the secondary is ~600K hotter than the primary. Evolutionary models place both components, in the early and advanced stage of the first dredge-up event on the red-giant branch. From theoretical models of the primary, we derived the internal rotational gradient. From a grid of models, the measured difference in lithium abundance is compared with theoretical predictions. The surface rotation of the primary is determined from the Kepler light curve and resembles the orbital period within 10 days. The radial rotational gradient between the surface and core is found to be 6.9+2.0/-1.0. The agreement between the surface rotation with the seismic result indicates that the full convective envelope is rotating quasi-rigidly. The models of the lithium abundance are compatible with a rigid rotation in the radiative zone during the main sequence. In the context of secular evolution, we describe the dynamics of the radiative core of low-mass stars to understand the internal transport of angular momentum in such stars which results in a solid rotation in the Sun from 0.7R_sun to 0.2R_sun and a weak radial core-envelope differential rotation in solar-type stars. This study requires at least a 2D description to capture the latitudinal variations of the differential rotation. We build 2D numerical models of a radiative core on the top of which we impose a latitudinal shear so as to reproduce a cylindrical differential rotation in a convective envelope. We perform a systematic study over the Rossby number measuring the latitudinal differential rotation at the radiative-convective interface. The imposed shear generates a geostrophic flow implying a cylindrical differential rotation. When compared to the baroclinic flow that arises from the stable stratification, we find that the geostrophic flow is dominant when the Rossby number is high enough with a cylindrical rotation profile. For low Rossby numbers, the baroclinic solution dominates with a quasi-shellular rotation profile. Using scaling laws from 3D simulations, we show that slow rotators are expected to have a cylindrical rotation profile. Fast rotators may have a shellular profile at the beginning of the main-sequence in stellar radiative zones. This study enables us to predict different types of differential rotation and emphasizes the need of a new generation of 2D rotating stellar models developed in synergy with 3D numerical simulations. The shear induced by a surface convective zone has a strong impact on the dynamics of the underlying radiative zone in low-mass stars. Layered semi-convection could operate in giant planets, potentially explaining the constraints on the heavy elements distribution in Jupiter deduced recently from Juno observations, and contributing to Saturn's luminosity excess or the abnormally large radius of some hot Jupiters. This is a state consisting of density staircases, in which convective layers are separated by thin stably stratified interfaces. The efficiency of tidal dissipation in a planet depends strongly on its internal structure. It is crucial to improve our understanding of the mechanisms driving this dissipation, since it has important consequences to predict the long-term evolution of any planetary system. In this work, our goal is to study the resulting tidal dissipation when internal waves are excited by other bodies (such as the moons of giant planets) in a region of layered semi-convection. We find that the rates of tidal dissipation can be significantly enhanced in a layered semi-convective medium compared to a uniformly convective medium, especially in the astrophysically relevant sub-inertial frequency range. Star-planet tidal interactions play a significant role in the dynamical evolution of close-in planetary systems. We investigate the propagation and dissipation of tidal inertial waves in a stellar/planetary convective region. We take into account a latitudinal differential rotation for the background flow, similar to what is observed in the envelope of low-mass stars like the Sun. Previous works have shown that differential rotation significantly alters the propagation and dissipation properties of inertial waves. In particular, when the Doppler-shifted tidal frequency vanishes in the fluid, a critical layer forms where tidal dissipation can be greatly enhanced. Planets in close-in orbits interact magnetically and tidally with their host stars. These interactions lead to a net torque that makes close-in planets migrate inward or outward depending on their orbital distance. We compare systematically the strength of magnetic and tidal torques for typical observed star-planet systems (T-Tauri & hot Jupiter, M dwarf & Earth-like planet, K star & hot Jupiter) based on state-of-the-art scaling-laws. We find that depending on the characteristics of the system, tidal or magnetic effects can dominate. For very close-in planets, we find that both torques can make a planet migrate on a timescale as small as 10 to 100 thousands of years. Recent spectropolarimetric observations of otherwise ordinary G, K, and M giants revealed localized magnetic strips in the HRD coincident with the regions where the first dredge-up and core He-burning occur. We seek to understand the origin of magnetic fields in such late-type giant stars. In analogy with late-type dwarf stars, we focus primarily on parameters known to influence the generation of magnetic fields in the outer convective envelope. We compute the classical dynamo parameters along the evolutionary tracks of low- and intermediate-mass stars at various metallicities using stellar models that have been extensively tested by spectroscopic and asteroseismic observations. These include convective turnover timescales and convective Rossby numbers, computed from the PMS to the tip of the RGB or the early AGB. To investigate the effects of the very extended outer convective envelope, we compute these parameters both for the entire convective envelope and locally, that is, at different depths within the envelope. We also compute the turnover timescales and corresponding Rossby numbers for the convective cores of intermediate-mass stars on the main sequence. Our models show that the Rossby number of the convective envelope becomes lower than unity in the well-delimited locations of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram where magnetic fields have indeed been detected. We show that alpha-omega dynamo processes might not be continuously operating, but that they are favored in the stellar convective envelope at two specific moments along the evolution tracks, that is, during the first dredge-up at the base of the RGB and during central helium burning in the helium-burning phase and early-AGB. This general behavior can explain the so-called magnetic strips recently discovered by dedicated spectropolarimetric surveys of evolved stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Lithium abundance A(Li) and surface rotation are good diagnostic tools to probe the internal mixing and angular momentum transfer in stars. We explore the relation between surface rotation, A(Li) and age in a sample of seismic solar-analogue (SA) stars and study their possible binary nature. We select a sample of 18 SA observed by the NASA Kepler satellite for an in-depth analysis. Their seismic properties and surface rotation are well constrained from previous studies. About 53 hours of high-resolution spectroscopy were obtained to derive fundamental parameters and A(Li). These values were combined and confronted with seismic masses, radii and ages, as well as surface rotation periods. We identify a total of 6 binary systems. A well-defined relation between A(Li) and rotation was obtained. With models constrained by the characterisation of the individual mode frequencies for single stars, we identify a sequence of three SA with similar mass (~1.1Mo) and stellar ages ranging between 1 to 9 Gyr. Within the realistic estimate of ~7% for the mass uncertainty, we find a good agreement between the measured A(Li) and the predicted A(Li) evolution from a grid of models calculated with the Toulouse-Geneva stellar evolution code, which includes rotational internal mixing, calibrated to reproduce solar chemical properties. We present A(Li) for a consistent spectroscopic survey of SA with a mass of 1.00+/-0.15Mo, and characterised through asteroseismology and surface rotation rates based on Kepler observations. The correlation between A(Li) and P_rot supports the gyrochronological concept for stars younger than the Sun. The consensus between measured A(Li) for solar analogues with model grids, calibrated onto the Sun's chemical properties suggests that these targets share the same internal physics. Until recently almost nothing was known about the evolution of magnetic fields found in upper main sequence Ap/Bp stars during their long main sequence lifetime. We are thus studying magnetic Ap/Bp stars in open clusters in order to obtain observational evidence of how the properties of Ap/Bp magnetic stars, such as field strength and structure, evolve with age during the main sequence. One important aspect of this study is to search for the very rare examples of hot magnetic stars in short-period binary systems among magnetic cluster members. In this paper we characterize the object BD-19~5044L, which is both a member of the open cluster IC 4725 = M~25, and a short-period SB2 system containing a magnetic primary star. We have obtained a series of intensity and circular polarisation spectra distributed through the orbital and rotation cycles of BD-19 5044L with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We find that the orbit of BD-19 5044L AB is quite eccentric (e = 0.477), with a period of 17.63 d. The primary is a magnetic Bp star with a variable longitudinal magnetic field, a polar field strength of ~1400 G and a low obliquity, while the secondary is probably a hot Am star and does not appear to be magnetic. The rotation period of the primary (5.04 d) is not synchronised with the orbit, but the rotation angular velocity is close to being synchronised with the orbital angular velocity of the secondary at periastron, perhaps as a result of tidal interactions. The periastron separation is small enough (about 12 times the radius of the primary star) that BD-19 5044L may be one of the very rare known cases of a tidally interacting SB2 binary system containing a magnetic Ap/Bp star., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Context: Constraints on the internal rotation of red giants are now available thanks to asteroseismic observations. Preliminary comparisons with rotating stellar models indicate that an undetermined additional process for the internal transport of angular momentum is required in addition to purely hydrodynamic processes. Aims: We investigate how asteroseismic measurements of red giants can help us characterize the additional transport mechanism. Methods: We first determine the efficiency of the missing transport mechanism for the low-mass red giant KIC 7341231 by computing rotating models that include an additional viscosity corresponding to this process. We then discuss the change in the efficiency of this transport of angular momentum with the mass, metallicity and evolutionary stage. Results: In the case of the low-mass red giant KIC 7341231, we find that the viscosity corresponding to the additional mechanism is constrained to the range 1 x 10^3 - 1.3 x 10^4 cm^2/s. This constraint on the efficiency of the unknown additional transport mechanism during the post-main sequence is obtained independently of any specific assumption about the modelling of rotational effects during the pre-main sequence and the main sequence (in particular, the braking of the surface by magnetized winds and the efficiency of the internal transport of angular momentum before the post-main-sequence phase). When we assume that the additional transport mechanism is at work during the whole evolution of the star together with a solar-calibrated braking of the surface by magnetized winds, the range of nu_add is reduced to 1 - 4 x 10^3 cm^2/s. In addition to being sensitive to the evolutionary stage of the star, we show that the efficiency of the unknown process for internal transport of angular momentum increases with the stellar mass., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Stars similar to the Sun, known as solar analogues, provide an excellent opportunity to study the preceding and following evolutionary phases of our host star. The unprecedented quality of photometric data collected by the \Kepler NASA mission allows us to characterise solar-like stars through asteroseismology and study diagnostics of stellar evolution, such as variation of magnetic activity, rotation and the surface lithium abundance. In this project, presented in a series of papers by Salabert et al. (2016a,b) and Beck et al (2016a,b), we investigate the link between stellar activity, rotation, lithium abundance and oscillations in a group of 18 solar-analogue stars through space photometry, obtained with the NASA Kepler space telescope and from currently 50+ hours of ground-based, high-resolution spectroscopy with the Hermes instrument. In these proceedings, we first discuss the selection of the stars in the sample, observations and calibrations and then summarise the main results of the project. By investigating the chromospheric and photospheric activity of the solar analogues in this sample, it was shown that for a large fraction of these stars the measured activity levels are compatible to levels of the 11-year solar activity cycle 23. A clear correlation between the lithium abundance and surface rotation was found for rotation periods shorter than the solar value. Comparing the lithium abundance measured in the solar analogues to evolutionary models with the Toulouse-Geneva Evolutionary Code (TGEC), we found that the solar models calibrated to the Sun also correctly describe the set of solar/stellar analogs showing that they share the same internal mixing physics. Binary stars are fascinating objects. Because they were formed together, binary systems provide a set of two stars with very well constrained parameters. Those can be used to study properties and physical processes, such as the stellar rotation, dynamics and rotational mixing of elements and allows us to learn from the differences we find between the two components. In this work, we discussed a detailed study of the binary system KIC9163796, discovered through Kepler photometry. The ground-based follow-up spectroscopy showed that this system is a double-lined spectroscopic binary, with a mass ratio close to unity. However, the fundamental parameters of the components of this system as well as their lithium abundances differ substantially. Kepler photometry of this system allows to perform a detailed seismic analysis as well as to derive the orbital period and the surface rotation rate of the primary component of the system. Indications of the seismic signature of the secondary are found. The differing parameters are best explained with both components located in the early and the late phase of the first dredge up at the bottom of the red-giant branch. Observed lithium abundances in both components are in good agreement with prediction of stellar models including rotational mixing. We introduce a general mathematical framework to model the internal transport of angular momentum in a star hosting a close-in planetary/stellar companion. By assuming that the tidal and rotational distortions are small and that the deposit/extraction of angular momentum induced by stellar winds and tidal torques are redistributed solely by an effective eddy-viscosity that depends on the radial coordinate, we can formulate the model in a completely analytic way. It allows us to compute simultaneously the evolution of the orbit of the companion and of the spin and the radial differential rotation of the star. An illustrative application to the case of an F-type main-sequence star hosting a hot Jupiter is presented. The impressive development of global numerical simulations of turbulent stellar interiors unveiled a variety of possible differential rotation (solar or anti-solar), meridional circulation (single or multi-cellular), and dynamo states (stable large scale toroidal field or periodically reversing magnetic fields). Various numerical schemes, based on the so-called anelastic set of equations, were used to obtain these results. It appears today mandatory to assess their robustness with respect to the details of the numerics, and in particular to the treatment of turbulent sub-grid scales. We report on an ongoing comparison between two global models, the ASH and EULAG codes. In EULAG the sub-grid scales are treated implicitly by the numerical scheme, while in ASH their effect is generally modelled by using enhanced dissipation coefficients. We characterize the sub-grid scales effect in a turbulent convection simulation with EULAG. We assess their effect at each resolved scale with a detailed energy budget. We derive equivalent eddy-diffusion coefficients and use the derived diffusivities in twin ASH numerical simulations. We find a good agreement between the large-scale flows developing in the two codes in the hydrodynamic regime, which encourages further investigation in the magnetohydrodynamic regime for various dynamo solutions., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research
