Abstract

The aim of this case study was to explore the abilities and limitations of trade unions in their response to undeclared work, which has received scant attention in research on working conditions and industrial relations. The authors use power resource theory to examine the outcome of a Swedish government initiative aimed to boost the ability of the social partners to tackle undeclared work. The findings confirm previous literature suggesting cross-sectoral differences in the extent and nature of undeclared work and an association between low levels of power resources and high risk of undeclared work. The authors recommend that future initiatives take account of cross-sectoral differences in the nature and extent of undeclared work and available power resources. Future research should consider how different actors can contribute to the ability of the social partners in different sectors to engage in the battle against undeclared work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Precarious employment (PE) has been linked to adverse health effects, possibly mediated through psychosocial hazards. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to explore if higher levels of PE are associated with psychosocial hazards (experiences of violence, sexual harassment, bullying, discrimination, high demands, and low control) and to explore gender differences in these patterns. The study is based on survey- and register data from a sample of 401 non-standard employees in Stockholm County (2016–2017). The level of PE (low/high) was assessed with the Swedish version of the employment precariousness scale (EPRES-Se) and analysed in relation to psychosocial hazards by means of generalized linear models, with the Poisson family and robust variances. After controlling for potential confounders (gender, age, country of birth, and education), the prevalence of suffering bullying (PR 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01–1.13) and discrimination (PR 1.52, 95% CI: 1.00–2.32) was higher among individuals with a high level of PE. Regarding the demand/control variables, a high level of PE was also associated with low control (PR 1.59, 95% CI: 1.30–1.96) and passive work (the combination of low demands and low control) (PR 1.60, 95% CI: 1.23–2.08). Our findings suggest that workers in PE are more likely to experience psychosocial hazards, and these experiences are more prevalent among women compared to men. Future longitudinal studies should look further into these associations and their implications for health and health inequalities.

Abstract

BackgroundWe aimed at estimating the causal effect of switching from precarious to standard employment on the 6-year and 12-year risk of all-cause mortality among workers aged 20-55 years in Sweden.MethodsWe emulated a series of 12 target trials starting every year between 2005 and 2016 using Swedish register data (n=251 273). We classified precariously employed individuals using a multidimensional approach at baseline as (1) remaining in precarious employment (PE) (73.8%) and (2) shifting to standard employment (26.2%). All-cause mortality was measured from 2006 to 2017. We pooled data for all 12 emulated trials and used covariate-adjusted pooled logistic regression to estimate intention-to-treat and per-protocol effects via risk ratios (RRs) and standardised risk curves (the parametric g-formula).ResultsShifting from precarious to standard employment decreases the 12-year risk of death by 20% on the relative scale (RR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.73; 0.93), regardless of what happens after the initial shift. However, we estimated a 12-year risk reduction of 30% on the relative scale for workers shifting from precarious to standard employment and staying within this employment category for the full 12 years (RR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.54; 0.95).ConclusionsThis study finds that shifting from low to higher-quality employment conditions (ie, stable employment, sufficient income levels and high coverage by collective agreements) decreases the risk of death. Remaining in PE increases the risk of premature mortality. Our results emphasise the necessity of ensuring decent work for the entire working population to accomplish the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Abstract

Precarious employment (PE) is a well-known social determinant of health and health inequalities. However, as most previous studies have focused on physical and mental well-being, less is known about the social-related outcomes (ie, social precarity) associated with precarious arrangements. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate whether PE is associated with social precarity in a working population of 401 nonstandard employed workers in Stockholm, Sweden (2016-2017). PE was assessed with the Swedish version of the Employment Precarious Scale (EPRES-Se) and analyzed in relation to social precarity related to working life (eg, task quality and job security) and living conditions (eg, restraint in social activities and financial constraints). We found positive adjusted associations between quartiles of EPRES-Se and social precarity related to working life (eg, being locked in an occupation [aPRq4:1.33 [1.10-1.61]]) and living conditions (eg, inability to participate in social activities because of work [aPRq4:1.27 [1.10-1.46]]). Our findings suggest that individuals in PE experience social precarity, stressing that PE may have negative effects on well-being. Further studies using multidimensional constructs of PE and larger samples should analyze these findings according to social and policy contexts in order to be able to inform policymakers. Abstract

Even though the health effects of precarious employment (PE) have been studied in the past recent years, data from years after the Great Recession has not yet been explored using a multidimensional approach in Europe. Further, digitalization of the labour market is happening, and new forms of work are appearing. But, its potential implications for the worker’s health are unknown. Given the similar characteristics of PE and gig work, the health impact of platform work could be huge. The main aim of this thesis is to describe the health status and occupational safety of precariously employed and gig workers, years after the Great Recession in Europe. The thesis was performed using two European surveys (Flash Eurobarometer 398 on Working Conditions and the Sixth European Working Conditions Survey) and occupational safety data obtained through direct observation in Barcelona (Spain). The results found in the thesis show that years after the Great Recession, PE is present in the European workforce. PE is more common among women, young workers and individuals with lower educational level. Moreover, as PE quartiles increase, so did the prevalence of declaring to suffer any health problem. The most precarious employees and unemployed individuals declare in similar magnitude health problems. In addition, to be precariously employed is not associated to exercise the right of sick leave shorter than 15 days. Instead, it is related to long sick leave (more than 15 days). Further, precariously employed workers are more exposed to violence and harassment, stress and repetitive movements or painful positions in the workplace than workers not precariously employed. Similarly, delivery gig workers do have an irregular use of personal protective equipment and frequently violate traffic regulations. Based on the results and conclusions obtained in the thesis, some recommendations from public health are pointed out. First of all, current labour market regulations should be reconsidered in order to achieve the 8th sustainable development goal of decent work and economic growth by 2030. Second, Public Health agencies should monitor precarious employment as another determinant of health. Third, it is necessary to solve the probable misclassification of gig workers as dependent self-employed in order to protect them from occupational risks. Finally, new approaches for addressing occupational safety at work in platform digital work should be carefully reviewed.
