Abstract

During the Cassini-Jupiter flyby, VIMS observed Io at different phase angles, both in full sunlight and in eclipse. By using the sunlight measurements, we were able to produce phase curves in the visual through all the near infrared wavelengths covered by the VIMS instrument (0.85-5.1 [micro]m). The phase angle spanned from ~2[degrees] to ~120[degrees]. The measurements, done just after Io emerged from Jupiter's shadow, show an increase of about 15% in Io's reflectance with respect to what would be predicted by the phase curve. This behavior is observed at wavelengths > 1.2 [micro]m. Moreover, just after emergence from eclipse an increase of about 25% is observed in the depth of S[O.sub.2] frost bands at 4.07 and 4.35 [micro]m. At 0.879 < [lambda] < 1.04 [micro]m the brightening is 10-24%. Below [lambda] = 0.879 [micro]m the brightening, if present, should be less than the precision of our measurements (~5%). Apparently, these observations are not explained neither by a diverse spatial distribution of S[O.sub.2] on the Io' surface nor by atmospheric S[O.sub.2] condensation on the surface during the eclipse. Abstract

Reducing gravitational effects such as thermal and solutal buoyancy enables investigation of a large range of different phenomena in materials science. The Symposium on Materials Research in Microgravity involved 6 sessions composed of 39 presentations and 14 posters with contributions from more than 14 countries. The sessions concentrated on four different categories of topics related to ongoing reduced-gravity research. Highlights from this symposium will be featured in the September 2012 issue of JOM. The TMS Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division, Process Technology and Modeling Committee and Solidification Committee sponsored the symposium.

Abstract

The purpose of this presentation is to point out that the origins and abundances of short-lived nu-clides in the early solar system had important conse-quences for "icy planetesimals". It is believed that these planetesimals, composed of ice and rock, were once very abundant in the early, outer solar system. Today, spacecraft can visit remnants of that popula-tion and measure their properties. Cassini's flyby of Saturn's satellite Phoebe may have been the first visit to an object related to this population.

Abstract

We describe a process for starting the hydrothermal activity in Enceladus' South Polar Region. The process takes advantage of fissures that reach the water table, about 1 kilometer below the surface. Filling these fissures with fresh ocean water initiates a flow of water up from an ocean that can be self-sustaining. In this hypothesis the heat to sustain the thermal anomalies and the plumes comes from a slightly warm ocean at depth. The heat is brought to the surface by water that circulates up, through the crust and then returns to the ocean.
