Abstract: As part of the B -fields In Star-forming Region Observations survey, we present James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) 850 μ m polarimetric observations toward the Orion integral-shaped filament (ISF) that covers three portions known as OMC-1, OMC-2, and OMC-3. The magnetic field threading the ISF seen in the JCMT POL-2 map appears as a tale of three: pinched for OMC-1, twisted for OMC-2, and nearly uniform for OMC-3. A multiscale analysis shows that the magnetic field structure in OMC-3 is very consistent at all the scales, whereas the field structure in OMC-2 shows no correlation across different scales. In OMC-1, the field retains its mean orientation from large to small scales but shows some deviations at small scales. Histograms of relative orientations between the magnetic field and filaments reveal a bimodal distribution for OMC-1, a relatively random distribution for OMC-2, and a distribution with a predominant peak at 90 ^∘ for OMC-3. Furthermore, the magnetic fields in OMC-1 and OMC-3 both appear to be aligned perpendicular to the fibers, which are denser structures within the filament, but the field in OMC-2 is aligned along with the fibers. All these suggest that gravity, turbulence, and magnetic field are each playing a leading role in OMC-1, 2, and 3, respectively. While OMC-2 and 3 have almost the same gas mass, density, and nonthermal velocity dispersion, there are on average younger and fewer young stellar objects in OMC-3, providing evidence that a stronger magnetic field will induce slower and less efficient star formation in molecular clouds.

Abstract: We present 850 μ m polarization observations of the IC 348 star-forming region in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observation survey. We study the magnetic properties of two cores (HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS) and a filamentary structure of IC 348. We find that the overall field tends to be more perpendicular than parallel to the filamentary structure of the region. The polarization fraction decreases with intensity, and we estimate the trend by power law and the mean of the Rice distribution fittings. The power indices for the cores are much smaller than 1, indicative of possible grain growth to micron size in the cores. We also measure the magnetic field strengths of the two cores and the filamentary area separately by applying the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method and its alternative version for compressed medium. The estimated mass-to-flux ratios are 0.45–2.20 and 0.63–2.76 for HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS, respectively, while the ratios for the filament are 0.33–1.50. This result may suggest that the transition from subcritical to supercritical conditions occurs at the core scale (∼0.05 pc) in the region. In addition, we study the energy balance of the cores and find that the relative strength of turbulence to the magnetic field tends to be stronger for IC 348 MMS than for HH 211 MMS. The result could potentially explain the different configurations inside the two cores: a single protostellar system in HH 211 MMS and multiple protostars in IC 348 MMS.

Abstract: We report 850 μ m continuum polarization observations toward the filamentary high-mass star-forming region NGC 2264, taken as part of the B -fields In STar forming Regions Observations large program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data reveal a well-structured nonuniform magnetic field in the NGC 2264C and 2264D regions with a prevailing orientation around 30° from north to east. Field strength estimates and a virial analysis of the major clumps indicate that NGC 2264C is globally dominated by gravity, while in 2264D, magnetic, gravitational, and kinetic energies are roughly balanced. We present an analysis scheme that utilizes the locally resolved magnetic field structures, together with the locally measured gravitational vector field and the extracted filamentary network. From this, we infer statistical trends showing that this network consists of two main groups of filaments oriented approximately perpendicular to one another. Additionally, gravity shows one dominating converging direction that is roughly perpendicular to one of the filament orientations, which is suggestive of mass accretion along this direction. Beyond these statistical trends, we identify two types of filaments. The type I filament is perpendicular to the magnetic field with local gravity transitioning from parallel to perpendicular to the magnetic field from the outside to the filament ridge. The type II filament is parallel to the magnetic field and local gravity. We interpret these two types of filaments as originating from the competition between radial collapsing, driven by filament self-gravity, and longitudinal collapsing, driven by the region's global gravity.

Abstract: We present BISTRO Survey 850 μ m dust emission polarization observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect nine of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarization, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field dominated to being matter dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 yr.

Abstract: We present observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μ m from the L43 molecular cloud, which sits in the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The data were taken using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as a part of the BISTRO large program. L43 is a dense ( ${N}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}\sim {10}^{22}$ –10 ^23 cm ^−2 ) complex molecular cloud with a submillimeter-bright starless core and two protostellar sources. There appears to be an evolutionary gradient along the isolated filament that L43 is embedded within, with the most evolved source closest to the Sco OB2 association. One of the protostars drives a CO outflow that has created a cavity to the southeast. We see a magnetic field that appears to be aligned with the cavity walls of the outflow, suggesting interaction with the outflow. We also find a magnetic field strength of up to ∼160 ± 30 μ G in the main starless core and up to ∼90 ± 40 μ G in the more diffuse, extended region. These field strengths give magnetically super- and subcritical values, respectively, and both are found to be roughly trans-Alfvénic. We also present a new method of data reduction for these denser but fainter objects like starless cores.

Abstract: Catfish farming is the largest aquaculture industry in the United States and an important economic driver in several southeastern states. Edwardsiella piscicida is a Gram-negative pathogen associated with significant losses in catfish aquaculture. Several Gram-negative bacteria use the BasS/BasR two-component system (TCS) to adapt to environmental changes and the host immune system. Currently, the role of BasS/BasR system in E. piscicida virulence has not been characterized. In the present study, two mutants were constructed by deleting the basS and basR genes in E. piscicida strain C07-087. Both mutant strains were characterized for virulence and immune protection in catfish hosts. The EpΔbasS and EpΔbasR mutants were more sensitive to acidic environments and produced significantly less biofilm than the wild-type. In vivo studies in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) revealed that both EpΔbasS and EpΔbasR were significantly attenuated compared with the parental wild-type (3.57% and 4.17% vs. 49.16% mortalities). Moreover, there was significant protection, 95.2% and 92.3% relative percent survival (RPS), in channel catfish vaccinated with EpΔbasS and EpΔbasR against E. piscicida infection. Protection in channel catfish was associated with a significantly higher level of antibodies and upregulation of immune-related genes (IgM, IL-8 and CD8-α) in channel catfish vaccinated with EpΔbasS and EpΔbasR strains compared with non-vaccinated fish. Hybrid catfish (channel catfish ♀ × blue catfish ♂) challenges demonstrated long-term protection against subsequent challenges with E. piscicida and E. ictaluri. Our findings demonstrate BasS and BasR contribute to acid tolerance and biofilm formation, which may facilitate E. piscicida survival in harsh environments. Further, our results show that EpΔbasS and EpΔbasR mutants were safe and protective in channel catfish fingerlings, although their virulence and efficacy in hybrid catfish warrant further investigation. These data provide information regarding an important mechanism of E. piscicida virulence, and it suggests EpΔbasS and EpΔbasR strains have potential as vaccines against this emergent catfish pathogen.

Abstract: We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. In addition, we estimate the magnetic field strengths of the filaments ($B_{POS} = 60-300~��$G)) using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and discuss whether the filaments are gravitationally unstable based on magnetic field and turbulence energy densities., 18 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: A Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, was submitted for necropsy after a number of species-specific fatalities in a public aquarium. The hemolymph was opaque and did not clot and the hepatopancreas had multiple foci of necrosis centered on gram-negative bacteria. Pure cultures of Vibrio harveyi were isolated, identified initially by matrix laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry, and confirmed by multilocus sequencing of the gyrB, recA, rpoA, and pyrH genes. As Caribbean spiny lobsters continue to be used for consumption and displayed in public aquariums, chronicling potential pathogens is warranted to inform differential diagnoses and to develop management strategies to reduce incidence of infectious disease in captive populations.

15. Abstract 3999: Combination of T-DXd with the irreversible pan-HER TKI afatinib drives combination benefit in HER2-low gastric and lung tumors

Abstract: Background: Trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) has been approved for advanced or metastatic breast, gastric and lung cancers. It has been postulated that irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) increase HER2 internalization, thus enhancing T-DXd efficacy. Here we report studies evaluating the combination of TKIs with T-DXd in preclinical models of HER2-low disease. Methods: Surface HER2 was measured with flow cytometry quantifying fluorescently labelled trastuzumab on the surface of HER2-low cell lines HCC38 and HCC1171 treated with afatinib, neratinib, lapatinib or tucatinib for 12 h. HER2 receptor dynamics on cell surface was also measured in NCI-N87 (HER2 IHC 3+) and HCC38 at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h post-treatment with afatinib, and recovery was measured up to 72 h after drug washout. In vivo efficacy was established with T-DXd alone and in combination with afatinib or tucatinib in two gastric patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, HD-2 (HER2 IHC 1+) and FU (HER2 IHC 2+), and one lung PDX model, MEDI-NSCLC-04 (HER2 IHC 1+). Results: In both HER2-low cell lines, treatment with irreversible inhibitors neratinib or afatinib led to enhanced internalization with a greater than 50% surface HER2 reduction, while treatment with the reversible inhibitors lapatinib or tucatinib led to 13-35% higher surface HER2 levels. Washout experiments indicated that receptor recovery at the plasma membrane begins between 4-12h post-washout of afatinib, with complete recovery at about 72h. Tumor shrinkage was significant in HER2-low gastric PDXs when T-DXd was combined with afatinib, but not with tucatinib. In HD-2, T-DXd 10mg/kg with afatinib 20mg/kg, and T-DXd 3mg/kg with tucatinib 25mg/kg combinations resulted in 74% and -3% (with respect to T-DXd) tumor growth inhibition (TGI), respectively. In FU, T-DXd 3mg/kg with afatinib 20mg/kg, and T-DXd 3mg/kg with tucatinib 25mg/kg combinations resulted in 80.3% and 24.7% TGI, respectively. Similarly, in MEDI-NSCLC-04 PDX model, benefit was observed in 5mg/kg T-DXd combination with 20mg/kg QD afatinib (95.3% TGI with respect to monotherapy T-DXd), but not with tucatinib (0.37% TGI). Intermittent schedules (QW, MWF) were also tested for afatinib in combination with T-DXd, with the MWF showing 49.2% TGI and QW showing 33.0 %TGI. In tissue samples from MEDI-NSCLC-04 efficacy study, γH2AX was detected by IHC in T-DXd and T-DXd+afatinib combination. In western blots, a decrease in HER2 as well as pHER2 was observed in response to T-DXd and 20mg/kg afatinib treatment, but not with tucatinib. Conclusions: In HER2 low gastric and lung preclinical models, T-DXd combined with irreversible pan-HER inhibitor induced superior antitumor effects compared to single agents or the combination of T-DXd with reversible inhibitors. These data support the rationale to test combination of T-DXd and pan-HER irreversible inhibitors in the clinical setting. Abstract: Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Abstract: Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. Abstract: Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. The Ariel payload is developed by a consortium of more than 50 institutes from 16 ESA countries, which include the UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, and a NASA contribution., Comment: Ariel Definition Study Report, 147 pages. Abstract: We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Diffusion weighted imaging techniques permit us to infer microstructural detail in biological tissue in vivo and noninvasively. Modern sequences are based on advanced diffusion encoding schemes, allowing probing of more revealing measures of tissue microstructure than the standard apparent diffusion coefficient or fractional anisotropy. Though these methods may result in faster or more revealing acquisitions, they generally demand prior knowledge of sequence-specific parameters for which there is no accepted sharing standard. Here, we present a metadata labelling scheme suitable for the needs of developers and users within the diffusion neuroimaging community alike: a lightweight, unambiguous parametric map relaying acqusition parameters. This extensible scheme supports a wide spectrum of diffusion encoding methods, from single diffusion encoding to highly complex sequences involving arbitrary gradient waveforms. Built under the brain imaging data structure (BIDS), it allows storage of advanced diffusion MRI data comprehensively alongside any other neuroimaging information, facilitating processing pipelines and multimodal analyses. We illustrate the usefulness of this BIDS-extension with a range of example data, and discuss the extension's impact on pre- and post-processing software.

Abstract: The mid/far infrared hosts a wealth of spectral information that allows direct determination of the physical state of matter in a large variety of astronomical objects, unhindered by foreground obscuration. Accessing this domain is essential for astronomers to much better grasp the fundamental physical processes underlying the evolution of many types of celestial objects, ranging from protoplanetary systems in our own milky way to 10-12 billion year old galaxies at the high noon of galaxy formation in our universe. The joint ESA/JAXA SPICA space mission will give such access for the astronomical community at large, by providing an observatory with unprecedented mid- to far-infrared imaging, polarimetric and spectroscopic capabilities. With a launch expected to happen in 2032, it will be the ideal complement of the space based (ATHENA) and ground based facilities available at this time (ELT, TMT, ALMA, SKA), so that the entire high energy to radio electromagnetic spectrum will be accessible to world astronomers with unprecedented power and sensitivity. The SPICA mission, under development as a joint ESA/JAXA project, will combine a 2.5-meter diameter telescope cooled to below 8 K with instruments employing state-of-the-art ultra-sensitive detectors. Instead of using liquid cryogen, a combination of passive cooling and mechanical coolers is employed to cool both the telescope and the instruments, allowing the mission lifetime to extend significantly beyond the required three years. SPICA offers spectroscopy instruments with spectral resolving power ranging from R~50 through 11000 in the 17-230 μm domain as well as R~28.000 spectroscopy between 12 and 18 μm. The state-of-the-art Transition Edge Detectors in the 35-230 μm detectors in the SAFARI spectrometer will provide an unprecedented sensitivity of ~5×10−20 W/m2 (5σ/1hr) - at least two orders of magnitude improvement over what has been attained to date. With the 10'x12' large Field of View SMI imager SPICA will be able to very efficiently do sensitive large area 30-37 μm broad band mapping. In addition the B-BOP instrument will provide accurate polarimetric imaging at 70, 220 and 350 μm With this exceptional leap in performance, new domains in infrared astronomy will become accessible, allowing us, for example, to unravel definitively galaxy evolution and metal production over cosmic time, to study dust formation and evolution from very early epochs onwards, and to trace the gas, dust and ice evolution in planetary systems.

Abstract: This case study evaluates and tracks vitality of a city (Seattle), based on a data-driven approach, using strategic, robust, and sustainable metrics. This case study was collaboratively conducted by the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) and CDO Analytics teams. The DSA is a nonprofit organization focused on making the city of Seattle and its Downtown a healthy and vibrant place to Live, Work, Shop, and Play. DSA primarily operates through public policy advocacy, community and business development, and marketing. In 2010, the organization turned to CDO Analytics ( cdoanalytics.org ) to develop a process that can guide and strategically focus DSA efforts and resources for maximal benefit to the city of Seattle and its Downtown. CDO Analytics was asked to develop clear, easily understood, and robust metrics for a baseline evaluation of the health of the city, as well as for ongoing monitoring and comparisons of the vitality, sustainability, and growth. The DSA and CDO Analytics teams strategized on how to effectively assess and track the vitality of Seattle and its Downtown. The two teams filtered a variety of data sources, and evaluated the veracity of multiple diverse metrics. This iterative process resulted in the development of a small number of strategic, simple, reliable, and sustainable metrics across four pillars of activity: Live, Work, Shop, and Play. Data during the 5 years before 2010 were used for the development of the metrics and model and its training, and data during the 5 years from 2010 and on were used for testing and validation. This work enabled DSA to routinely track these strategic metrics, use them to monitor the vitality of Downtown Seattle, prioritize improvements, and identify new value-added programs. As a result, the four-pillar approach became an integral part of the data-driven decision-making and execution of the Seattle community's improvement activities. The approach described in this case study is actionable, robust, inexpensive, and easy to adopt and sustain. It can be applied to cities, districts, counties, regions, states, or countries, enabling cross-comparisons and improvements of vitality, sustainability, and growth.

Abstract: The catch efficiency of a hydraulic dredge was tested on a population of the northern quahog Mercenaria mercenaria in Narragansett Bay, RI, to understand gear limitations and correct relative abundance time series data. In 2017 and 2018, 45 hydraulic dredge tows were conducted following a long-standing fisheries-independent survey protocol, with the dredge transects inspected on SCUBA to assess dredge catch efficiency. Bull raking and quadrat samples taken on SCUBA were also conducted alongside the transects to compare sampling methods. The average dredge catch efficiency across samples was 0.64 (±0.29 SD). Bottom type was the most significant determinant of dredge catch efficiency, with higher catch efficiency on hard bottom (0.73 efficiency) than on soft bottom (0.48 efficiency). The quadrat and bull rake samples reflected higher catch rates than the dredge, but relationships between relative abundance estimates from the alternate methods and the dredge were either weak or insignificant. Bottom type, sediment classification, depth, and observed abundance were used to model dredge catch efficiencies and predict fisheries-independent abundance indices to more accurate estimates. Applying corrections using a generalized linear model scaled abundances through time, with trends generally the same between time series both with and without the corrections applied. This work provides an example of addressing gear efficiency concerns through diverse collaborations and improving the science and management for a commercially and recreationally significant marine resource.

Abstract: Field and greenhouse studies were conducted in 2000 and 2001 in Mississippi to determine the most effective POST herbicide programs for control of Texasweed in glyphosate-resistant soybean. In the field, Texasweed plants recovered from most POST herbicide treatments, and plant death rarely occurred. A sequential application of 1,100 g ae/ha glyphosate followed by 840 g/ha glyphosate was the only treatment that controlled at least 90% of Texasweed 4 wk after treatment. Texasweed control ranged from 80 to 87% for lower rates of glyphosate applied once or twice and 390 g ai/ha fomesafen. The addition of fomesafen or other herbicides to glyphosate did not improve control compared with glyphosate alone. In the greenhouse, glyphosate at 560 g/ha controlled 93 and 90% of one- and two-leaf plants, respectively, but at least 1,400 g/ha was required to obtain 90% control of four-leaf plants. Fomesafen at 260 g/ha controlled 93 to 99% of one- to four-leaf Texasweed plants in the greenhouse. Nomenclature: Fomesafen; glyphosate; Texasweed, Caperonia palustris (L.) St. Hil; soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Texasweed is a summer annual dicotyledonous species that has emerged as a weed of economic importance in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and soybean grown in the lower Mississippi River Delta Region. Texasweed, a member of the family Euphorbiaceae, is an erect herb ranging in height from 30 to 300 cm (SWSS 1998). There is little information in the literature on the biology and control of this weed. Observations of weed scientists, field extension personnel, and producers indicate Texasweed tends to be more problematic in heavy clay soils typically used for soybean–rice rotations. We have observed that Texasweed emerges throughout the growing season especially in unplanted areas like wheel tracks where light is allowed to reach to soil surface. Producers have noted that glyphosate provides only marginal levels of control and that Texasweed becomes extremely difficult to control once plants have reached the four-leaf growth stage. Infestation in soybean fields is currently restricted to only a few Mississippi Delta counties, but because this weed is difficult to control, great concern is raised about the potential spread into other areas. In addition, seed production appears to occur for an extended time throughout the growing season, with mature seed dehiscing while new seed are being produced. Koger et al. (2004) recently reported that Texasweed can germinate under a wide range of soil temperatures and pH levels, and from various soil burial depths. Texasweed plants produced an average of 893 seed per plant, and 90% of the seed were viable (Koger et al. 2004). Also, some seed float in water, making it possible for distribution via drainage systems. The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the effectiveness of glyphosate and other POST herbicides for control of Texasweed in glyphosate-resistant soybean, (2) whether mixtures of glyphosate with other herbicides improved control compared with glyphosate alone, and (3) the effect of Texasweed growth stage on control.

Abstract: Prospects for future satellite missions, operating in the FIR-mm wavelength region, to study the polarisation of the cosmic background radiation (CBR) and to carry out imaging and spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies, are discussed. Full characterisation of the CBR polarisation offers the possibility of determining the energy scale of inflation and constraining the form of the inflaton potential. Current technology in FIR imaging and spectroscopy falls well short of matching capabilities in the optical/UV and the mm regions. Filling this gap is important to allow detailed examination of the physics and evolution of high-redshift galaxies, and will be possible with future FIR observatories which are now being studied.

Abstract: The SIRTF Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE), the largest SIRTF Legacy program, is a wide-area, imaging survey to trace the evolution of dusty, star-forming galaxies, evolved stellar populations, and AGN as a function of environment, from redshifts z~3 to the current epoch. SWIRE will survey 7 high-latitude fields, totaling 60 - 65 sq. deg. in all 7 SIRTF bands: IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.6, 8 microns and MIPS 24, 70, 160 microns. The Legacy Extragalactic Catalog may contain in excess of 2 million IR-selected galaxies, dominated by (1) ~150,000 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs: L{FIR}>10^11 L_sun), ~7000 of these with z>2; (2) 1 million early-type galaxies, ~10,000 with z>2; and (3) \~20,000 classical AGN, plus significantly more dust-obscured QSO/AGN among the LIRGs. SWIRE will provide an unprecedented view of the evolution of galaxies, structure, and AGN. The key scientific goals of SWIRE are: (1) to determine the evolution of actively star-forming and passively evolving galaxies in order to understand the history of galaxy formation in the context of cosmic structure formation; (2) to determine the evolution of the spatial distribution and clustering of evolved galaxies, starbursts and AGN in the key redshift range, 0.5, Comment: 65 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the P.A.S.P. Abstract: Yersinia enterocolitica is a zoonotic gram-negative pathogen that causes mesenteric lymphadenitis, terminal ileitis, acute gastroenteritis, and septicemia in domestic animals and primates. In 2012, 46 captive African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) died during an outbreak of acutely fatal enteric disease over a period of 1 mo on the island of St Kitts. The affected monkeys presented with a history of mucohemorrhagic diarrhea, marked dehydration, and depression. Fifteen bacterial isolates were recovered from the spleen, liver, and lungs of affected monkeys. All isolates were identified as Y. enterocolitica by biochemical analysis and sequence comparison of the 16S rRNA gene. Phenotypic and genotypic analysis of the recovered isolates revealed homogeneity among the recovered bacteria, and all isolates gave a random amplified polymorphic DNA pattern resembling that given by genotype D under serotypes O:7,8. This outbreak represents the first isolation and characterization of Y. enterocolitica as the causative agent of fatal enteric disease in primates in the Caribbean.

Abstract: We characterize the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (SWIRE) galaxy populations in the SWIRE validation field within the Lockman Hole, based on the 3.6-24 μm Spitzer data and deep U, g', r', i' optical imaging within an area ~1/3 deg2 for ~16,000 Spitzer SWIRE sources. The entire SWIRE survey will discover over 2.3 million galaxies at 3.6 μm and almost 350,000 at 24 μm ~70,000 of these will be five-band 3.6-24 μm detections. The colors cover a broad range, generally well represented by redshifted spectral energy distributions of known galaxy populations; however, significant samples of unusually blue objects in the [3.6]-[4.5] color are found, as well as many objects very red in the 3.6-24 μm mid-IR. Nine of these are investigated and are interpreted as star-forming systems, starbursts, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from z=0.37 to 2.8, with luminosities from LIR=1010.3 to 1013.7 Lsolar.
