RESTORATION ecology , *COASTAL plains , *FOREST restoration , *SOIL degradation , *PLANTING - Abstract
Pastures occupy approximately 20% of the Brazilian territory and a significant part of these areas are degraded and have legal environmental liabilities. Ecological restoration is necessary to remedy this liability. The objective of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of a forest restoration planting in an area previously used as buffalo pasture, through floristic and phytosociological parameters of natural regeneration. The study area was densely populated by invasive exotic grasses (Urochloa spp.) until 2006, when, after eliminating the grasses, six native tree species were planted at 2.5 × 1.6 m spacing. A total of 73 terrestrial plant species were found, the most important being Alchornea glandulosa Poepp. & Endl. - heliophilous, which showed high abundance in all strata. The restoration methodology employed was effective in triggering natural succession in the study area, resulting, after 12 years, in floristic and structural parameters consistent with the initial stage of development of the alluvial Dense Ombrophylous Forest. It is inferred that the well-preserved landscape in the region has been determinant in providing the propagules and dispersers that made the observed species richness possible, while the planting tends to have contributed with the control of grasses and with the recovery of the forest environment, facilitating the arrival and development of these propagules. Evidence of soil degradation by use as pasture was observed, and in former buffalo bathing areas neither restoration planting nor natural regeneration developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Vast areas of the Brazilian Amazon have been deforested for the expansion of livestock and the agricultural frontier, which has resulted in soil exhaustion. It is therefore urgent to reduce deforestation and encourage sustainable land use to promote social and economic development in the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different land use systems (an agroforestry system, cassava cultivation, non-degraded pasture, native forest) on the chemical properties of the soil (0-40 cm) in the mesoregion of the Juruá Valley, in the state of Acre, Brazil. Principal component analysis showed the soil in the forested area (reference) has greater values for P, Ca
2+ , Mg2+ , K+ , Na+ , sum of bases, and cation exchange capacity; while hierarchical cluster analysis suggested little dissimilarity to the soil in the agroforestry system, and high dissimilarity to the soil in the areas of cassava cultivation and pasture. The results therefore support agroforestry as the most sustainable land use system, compared to cassava cultivation or pasture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

CONTROLLED release of fertilizers ,PEARSON correlation (Statistics) ,PLANT propagation ,SEEDLINGS ,FACTOR analysis ,PLANT nurseries ,REGRESSION analysis - Abstract
When associated an adequate shading and nutrition the seedlings to reach characteristics that allow them to survive in the field and increase production. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the production of Oenocarpus bataua seedlings in response to different shade environments and controlled-release fertilizer doses. The study was carried out from at the Embrapa nursery located in the municipality of Rio Branco, Acre state. The experimental design was complete randomized blocks with three replications and six plants per plot. The treatments were distributed according to a 4 x 5 factorial scheme, i.e., four shade environments (20%, 30%, 50% and 75%) and five CRF doses (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 kg m-3) mixed with the substrate. Biometric, biomass and quality variables were evaluated at 305 days after transplanting. The ANOVA was applied for the qualitative factor and regression analysis was performed for the quantitative factor, both at 5% probability. The treatments were grouped by analyzing canonical variables, a multivariate statistical and realized the Pearson's correlation between variables was determined through correlation networks. The shading environment and the controlledrelease fertilizer positively influenced the growth and quality of Oenocarpus bataua seedlings. The seedlings of Oenocarpus bataua have better biometric characteristics produced in a nursery with 50% shading. Oenocarpus bataua seedlings show better quality when 3.88 kg m-3 of controlled release fertilizer are used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the growth of species Senna multijuga, Myrsine coriaceae, Schizolobium parahyba var. parahyba, Inga edulis, I. marginata and Citharexylum myrianthum, in the recovery of an area degraded by livestock. The experiment was conducted in the Natural Reserve of Guaricica in Antonina, PR. Four treatments were tested with different densities of individuals of each species, each with three replications in 3.000 m² blocks. The evaluation was based on the variables: total height (h), diameter at 1.30 m above ground level, crown cover area, basal area and mortality. Except for the mortality that was compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test, the other variables were compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance level. I. edulis presented the best growth and I. marginata the worse, while M. coriacea presented the lowest mortality and S. multijuga the highest. Treatments expressed similar results, since higher density of I. edulis generated higher average h and higher density of S. multijuga generated higher mortality. Higher density of I. edulis tend to increase the efficiency of restoration projects, while C. myrianthum and M. coriacea also presented potential for plantings in the study region. I. edulis apresentou o melhor desenvolvimento e I. marginata o pior, enquanto M. coriacea apresentou a menor mortalidade e S. multijuga a maior.

Abstract: Brazil has a huge environmental liability for areas legaly destined to nature conservation, which did converted for other uses. Great part of these areas, are degraded for livestock, becoming a social, economic and environmental problem. Therefore, restoration is fundamental and it studies are important to gain efficiency, enabling it expansion. This work aim to evaluate the natural regeneration in a restoration experiment with 12 years old, using floristic and phytossociologic criteria. The study area is in domains of Atlantic Rainforest, in the coast plain of Paraná state, city of Antonina. This experimental area has 3.6 ha, distributed in three blocs and four treatments, where was planting six tree native species in stand 2.4 m x 1.6 m, testing different proportions between species. Until 2006, this area was occupied by buffalos and covered by Urochloa spp.. We did found 81 terricolous vegetal species, which reached the minimum high (1.3 m). The most important was Alchornea glandulosa Poepp. & Endl., heliophytic specie which presented great abundance in all stratum. The equity, with only two species concentrating 44% of importance value, is comum in initial stages of natural succession. The increasing importance of shadow tolerant species, toward the tiny stratum, indicates the occurence of natural succession. The species richness in regenerating stratum, with great importance for Myrtaceaes, point to succesfull in recovers soil and micro-climatic conditions. In contrast, the great importance of Cyatheaceaes indicates soil degradation. There are clearings in the forest, which are relationed with soil degradation and natural limitations. All treatments were effective, unleashing the natural succession, and there is no need to intervention. But were floristic, structural and diversity differences, which the treatments with larger initial proportion of Inga edulis Mart. were better. The planting results also points to the conclusion that larger proportion of I. edulis can increase the restoration efficiency. The good behavior of this specie seems to be relationed with its superior canopy closing velocity, with rapid growth and broad and dense treetops.

A Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray and Cratylia argentea (Desvaux) O. Kuntze are classified as multipurpose shrubs that are adapted to tropical environments and have a high regrowth capacity. They are species with promising use in the rural properties, considering their adaptations in restrictive environments and their versatilities in relation to the use especially because they stand out as green fertilizers and forages with high protein content. T. diversifolia is easily multiplied by asexual propagation, however, information on the sexual propagation in the species is scarce. C. argentea, although native, is a species conserved and evaluated in few active germplasm banks in Brazil, none of which is present in the Amazon. In this context and in order to contribute to the conservation and dissemination of the species, two studies were carried out. In the first one the objective was to evaluate the physiological quality of T. diversifolia seeds as a function of harvesting time, time and storage conditions. In the second, the objective was to carry out the prospecting of accessions of C. argentea in Brazil and to implant an active germplasm bank in the Amazon. In the work of T. diversifolia achenes were collected on different days after the anthesis (4, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 28, 32, 36 and 40 days) of the inflorescence. After the harvest, the following variables were evaluated: seed dry matter mass, germination percentage, germination speed index, germination speed and percentage of full achenes. Additionally, these variables were analyzed as a function of two storage conditions (refrigerated and non-refrigerated environment) and two storage times (6 and 12 months). Already for the work of C. argentea were collected excursions in 6 units of federation of Brazil to identify individuals of the species, description of the environment of the individuals insertion and seed collection. The seeds collected were used to produce seedlings that were used for implantation of an active germplasm bank in the Amazon. The ideal harvest period of T. diversifolia seeds comprised the period between 28 and 36 days after anthesis, where seeds with germination percentages higher than 75% and percentage of achenes full of 100% were obtained. The chilled environment provided the highest percentages of seed germination, in addition, the germination speed and the rate of germination decreased and increased over the storage time, respectively. The seeds presented a high percentage of germination after 12 months of storage in both refrigerated and non - refrigerated conditions. For C. argenetea, 32 accessions were obtained in the states of Acre, Ceará, Goiás, Maranhão, Pará and Tocantins. The species was identified in the Amazon, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes in a range of 102 to 762 meters of altitude. At the Federal University of Acre, in Cruzeiro do Sul (Acre - Brazil) and the Amazon biome, an active germplasm bank was implanted with 140 plants of all the accesses collected.

TITHONIA diversifolia , *SEED harvesting , *MEDICINAL plants , *SEED quality , *ANIMAL feeds , *SHRUBS , *GERMINATION - Abstract
Tithonia diversifolia is a shrub of the Asteraceae family native to Central America and found on all continents. It has multiple functions with emphasis on use in animal feed and as a medicinal plant. It is usually propagated vegetative, with little information on seed propagation. For this reason, the aim of this study was to define the ideal time for harvesting the seeds and to evaluate the quality of the seeds according to time and storage condition. Therefore, achenes were collected on different days after the anthesis (14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 28, 32, 36 and 40 days) of inflorescence. Following harvesting, the following variables were evaluated: seed dry matter mass, germination percentage, germination speed index, germination speed and percentage of full achenes. Moreover, these variables were analyzed as a function of two storage conditions (refrigerated and non-refrigerated environment) and two storage times (6 and 12 months). The ideal harvest period comprised the period from 28 to 36 days after anthesis, in which seeds with germination percentages exceeding 75% and percentage of full achenes of 100% were obtained. The chilled environment provided the highest percentages of seed germination. Moreover, germination speed increased throughout the storage time. The seeds showed a high percentage of germination after 12 months of storage, both in refrigerated and non-refrigerated conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Cratylia argentea is a native species with high phenotypic plasticity to abiotic factors and economic potential for use in animal feed and green fertilization, and promising alternative for areas with lower soil fertility in tropical regions. However, there is a few studies and utilization with this plant in Brazil and there are no cultivars registered in the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento - MAPA. In this context, the study aimed to analyze the potential uses of seed coating technique with triple super phosphate and application of inoculants in sowing containing Bradyrhizobium. Germination and vigor analysis of C. argentea coated seeds, evaluation of plant development, grown from coated seeds in Red Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) and the evaluation of inoculants efficiency following the MAPA protocol; in which, the first one was conducted in laboratory and the last two performed in the greenhouse. The doses used were 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 g triple superphosphate for 100 seeds and the inoculants: CR 33 (BR10243), CR52 (BR10257), CR42 (BR10244) CEPAC-B10, SEMIA 6464 (BR3262) and SEMIA 6462 (BR3267). Additionally, basic studies were done for the species: the relation of photosynthesis between the time of day and the light intensity, the position of the stomata on the leaf epidermis and the biochemical composition of the seeds. The coating technique with triple superphosphate is not recommended for the species and the CR 52 inoculant was the only one which resulted in nodulation for the species, and its effect was observed from 85 days after planting. The starch and protein are the main reserve components of seeds and the photosynthesis in C. argentea is higher in the morning, and the highest rates were in the range of 750 and 1000 μmol.m-2.s-1 photosynthetically active radiation.

COWPEA weevil , *INSECT pests , *COWPEA , *SEEDS , *BRUCHIDAE , *GRAIN storage , *BEETLES - Abstract
This work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of traditional method of storage of cowpea grains and seeds for the control of the Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabr.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The storage method consists of packing grains and seeds, mixed with threshing residue, in hermetically sealed polyethylene bottles or barrels. In the experiment, four treatments were evaluated: (i.) Perforated flask containing grains, (ii.) Non-perforated flask containing grains, (iii.) Perforated flask containing a mixture of grains and threshing residues and (iv.) Non-perforated bottle containing a mixture of grains and threshing residues, the latter representing the traditional method (control). For each treatment, 4 replicates were used. For each pot, 20 adult individuals of the insect-pest were inserted. After induced infestation, the pots were stored in a place protected from rain and sun, simulating the reality of farmers' storage. At 35 and 70 days after the induced infestation, the following variables were counted for each pot: number of live insects, number of dead insects, number of holes caused by insects in the grains and percentage of grains attacked. The use of threshing residue was not efficient for the control. On the other hand, the absence of gas exchange in the pot decreased the multiplication of the insect pest, indicating the importance of using hermetic barrels ourvacuum packaging for storage and commercialization.
