Laser guide stars have been proposed to overcome a widely recognized limitation of adaptive optics: the need for bright reference sources for wavefront sensing nearby the scientific field of interest. The laser guide stars foreseen for the future Extremely Large Telescopes are based on the resonant back-scattering of a laser beam by the Sodium atoms concentrated in a ∼13 km thick layer at about 90 km above the ground. Such an artificial source, observed from a position laterally offset from the laser projector, appears elongated due to the finite thickness of the Sodium layer: on a 40-m class telescope with laser projector located on the primary mirror edge the image elongation may exceed 13 arcsec. In a Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor, the elongated spots require the use of large detectors to avoid spot truncation and impose demanding requirements in terms of photon flux return with respect to smaller telescopes. We propose an alternative wavefront sensor concept intrinsically insensitive to the spot elongation, measuring the local wavefront slope in the direction orthogonal to the elongation itself; the full 2D slope measurements are retrieved by combining the signals from different laser guide stars, projected from different positions at the edge of the telescope. The performance of the new wavefront sensor is analysed in the framework of a ground-layer adaptive optics application. A possible extension to multiconjugate adaptive optics is also qualitatively described.

Prolonged human-crewed missions on the Moon are foreseen as a gateway for Mars and asteroid colonisation in the next decades. Health risks related to long-time permanence in space have been partially investigated. Hazards due to airborne biological contaminants represent a relevant problem in space missions. A possible way to perform pathogens’ inactivation is by employing the shortest wavelength range of Solar ultraviolet radiation, the so-called germicidal range. On Earth, it is totally absorbed by the atmosphere and does not reach the surface. In space, such Ultraviolet solar component is present and effective germicidal irradiation for airborne pathogens’ inactivation can be achieved inside habitable outposts through a combination of highly reflective internal coating and optimised geometry of the air ducts. The Solar Ultraviolet Light Collector for Germicidal Irradiation on the Moon is a project whose aim is to collect Ultraviolet solar radiation and use it as a source to disinfect the re-circulating air of the human outposts. The most favourable positions where to place these collectors are over the peaks at the Moon’s poles, which have the peculiarity of being exposed to solar radiation most of the time. On August 2022, NASA communicated to have identified 13 candidate landing regions near the lunar South Pole for Artemis missions. Another advantage of the Moon is its low inclination to the ecliptic, which maintains the Sun’s apparent altitude inside a reduced angular range. For this reason, Ultraviolet solar radiation can be collected through a simplified Sun’s tracking collector or even a static collector and used to disinfect the recycled air. Fluid-dynamic and optical simulations have been performed to support the proposed idea. The expected inactivation rates for some airborne pathogens, either common or found on the International Space Station, are reported and compared with the proposed device efficiency. The results show that it is possible to use Ultraviolet solar radiation directly for air disinfection inside the lunar outposts and deliver a healthy living environment to the astronauts.

Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. The inactivation or airborne pathogens inside closed spaces is a critical issue that raised overwhelmingly during the current SARS-CoV 2 pandemic. Among the different technologies to achieve air sanification, the ultraviolet germicidal irradiation is a trending technique, also due to the fast development of more and more effective ultra-violet LED sources, that are expected to replace the mercury vapor lamps in the next few years. The positioning of LEDs inside cavities with highly reflective surfaces permits an enhancement of the internal irradiance and the development of compact devices. Optical simulations, by means of ray tracing, are fundamental, since an accurate irradiance estimation in presence of multiple internal reflections, scattering, light leaks outside the cav-ity and the sources angular emission distribution is not possible with only analytical calculations. Ray tracing permits to model the spatial irradiance inside the cavity by varying the components parameters to maximize the inactivation rate as a function of the air flow field. We discuss, on the basis of the experience on several related projects, the advantages of using the numerical approach to simulate these devices, focusing the attention onto the critical parameters which must be controlled to retrieve a reliable estimation of the system performance.

Multi-conjugated adaptive optics (MCAO) is essential for performing astrometry with the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Unlike most of the 8-m class telescopes, the ELT will be a fully adaptive telescope, and a significant portion of the adaptive optics (AO) dynamic range will be depleted by the correction and stabilization of the telescope aberrations and instabilities. MCAO systems are of particular interest for ground-based astrometry since they stabilize the low-order field distortions and transient plate scale instabilities, which originate from the telescope and in the instrument. All instruments have several optical elements relatively far away from the pupil that can potentially challenge the astrometric precision of the observations with their residual mid-spatial frequencies errors. Using a combined simulation of ray tracing and AO numerical codes, we assess the impact of these systematic errors at different field-of-view (FoV) scales and fitting scenarios. The distortions have been assessed at different sky position angles (PA) and indicate that over large FoVs only small PA ranges (±1 deg to 3 deg) are accessible with astrometric residuals ≤50 μas. A full compliance with the astrometric requirement, at any PA, is achievable for 2 arc sec2 FoV patches already with a third-order polynomial. The natural partition of the optical system into three segments, i.e., the ELT, the MAORY MCAO module, and the MICADO instrument, resembles a splitting of the astrometric problem into the three subsystems that are characterized by different distortion amplitudes and calibration strategies. The result is a family portrait of the different optical segments with their specifications, dynamic motions, conjugation height, and AO correctability, leading to tracing their role in the bigger puzzle of the 50-μas as astrometric endeavor.

The transmission of airborne pathogens represents a major issue to worldwide public health. Ultraviolet light irradiation can contribute to the sanification of air to reduce the pathogen transmission. This study concerns the design of a compact filter for airborne pathogen inactivation by means of UV-C LED sources, whose effective irradiance is enhanced thanks to high reflective surfaces. Ray-tracing and computational fluid dynamic simulations are both used to model the device and to maximize the performance inside the filter volume. Simulations foresee the inhibition of SARS-Cov 2 also in the case of high air fluxes. This study demonstrates that current available LED technology is effective for air sanification purposes.

We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R_e) smaller than 13 pc identified at z=6.143 and showing a star-formation rate density \Sigma_SFR~1000 Msun/yr/kpc2 (or conservatively >300 Msun/yr/kpc2). Such a dense region is detected with S/N>40 hosted by a dwarf extending over 440 pc, dubbed D1 (Vanzella et al. 2017b). D1 is magnified by a factor 17.4+/-5.0 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2+/-4.0 (including the systematic errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed multiple images with a r.m.s. of 0.35", and the tangential stretch is well depicted by a giant multiply-imaged Lya arc. D1 is part of an interacting star-forming complex extending over 800 pc. The SED-fitting, the very blue ultraviolet slope (\beta ~ -2.5, F(\lambda) ~ \lambda^\beta) and the prominent Lya emission of the stellar complex imply that very young (< 10-100 Myr), moderately dust-attenuated (E(B-V), Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, MNRAS accepted

The new class of large telescopes, as the future ELT, are designed to work with Laser Guide Star (LGS) tuned to a resonance of atmosphere sodium atoms. This wavefront sensing technique presents complex issues for an application to big telescopes due to many reasons mainly linked to the finite distance of the LGS, the launching angle, Tip-tilt indetermination and focus anisoplanatism. The implementation of a laboratory Prototype for LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) at the beginning of the phase study of MAORY, the Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY for the ELT first light, has been indispensable to investigate specific mitigation strategies to the LGS WFS issues. This paper shows the test results of LGS WFS Prototype under different working conditions. The accuracy within which the LGS images are generated on the Shack-Hartmann (SH) WFS has been cross-checked with the MAORY simulation code. The experiments show the effect of noise on the centroiding precision, the impact of LGS image truncation on the wavefront sensing accuracy as well as the temporal evolution of sodium density profile and LGS image under-sampling.

We present a novel analysis of a young star cluster in the Large Magellanic cloud, R136-like, as seen by the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). The main aim of this study is to quantify precision and accuracy of stellar proper motion measurements in crowded field when using an ELT working at its diffraction limit. This can serve as a reference study for future development of ELT scientific cases. In particular, we investigate our future ability to detect the dynamical signature of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) with mass ∼104 M⊙ through detailed measurements of stellar proper motions. We have simulated two N-body dynamical cluster models with and without an IMBH. For each model, we have chosen two snapshots temporally spaced by 5 yr. Stellar fluxes in IJHK filters and star positions have been used to create ELT mock images for both single- and multiconjugate adaptive optics observing modes following the requierements given by ESO technical specifications for the first light imager. These images have been analysed using a classical software for seeing-limited data reduction, daophot/allstar. We make accurate photometry till the very faint pre-main-sequence stars, i.e. depending on the adaptive optics (AO) mode, magnitudes down to K ∼ 24 mag (single-conjugate AO) or K ∼ 22 mag (multiconjugate AO) in a total integration time of 20 min on target. Although daophot suite of programs is not devoted to precise astrometry, the astrometric accuracy is impressive, reaching few μas yr−1 or km s−1. In these assumptions, we are able to detect the IMBH signature at the centre of the cluster.

Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large Survey (ARIEL) is the M4 ESA mission to launch in 2028. ARIEL is based on a 1 m class telescope optimized for spectroscopy in the waveband between 1.95 μm and 7.8 μm (main instrument), operating in cryogenic conditions in the range 50 - 60 K. For the main mirror substrate, the Aluminum 6061 alloy has been chosen as baseline material after a trade- off. The large size of the mirror however (0.6 square meters) presents specific production challenges concerning opto-mechanical stability in cryogenic applications. To minimize risk, the machining, polishing, thermal treatments and coating processes will first be tested on flat samples of 150 mm of diameter and then applied to a full-size demonstrator mirror, before finalizing the design and producing the flight mirror. This study, following a review of existing literature on fabrication of Al 6061 mirrors for spaceborne IR applications will characterize the optical properties of the samples after each phase of thermal treatment with the goal of determining an optimal process for material stress release, figuring and surface finishing and final optical stability in the operating cryogenic environment.

Astrometry is one of the main science case which drives the requirements of the next multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) systems for future extremely large telescopes. The small diffraction limited point-spread function (PSF) and the high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of these instruments, promise astrometric precision at the level of micro-arcseconds. However, optical distortions have to be as low as possible to achieve the high demanding astrometry requirements. In addition to static distortions, the opto-mechanical instabilities cause astrometric errors that can be major contributors to the astrometry error budget. The present article describes the analysis, at design level, of the effects of opto-mechanical instabilities when coupled with optical surface irregularities due to the manufacturing process. We analyse the notable example of the Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY (MAORY) for the extremely large telescope (ELT). Ray-tracing simulations combined with a Monte Carlo approach are used to estimate the geometrical structure and magnitude of field distortion resulting from the optical design. We consider the effects of distortion on the MCAO correction showing that it is possible achieve the micro-arcseconds astrometric precision once corresponding accuracy is obtained by both optical design and manufacturing. We predict that for single-epoch observations, an astrometric error below 50$\mu$as can be achieved for exposure times up to 2 min, provided about 100 stars are available to remove fifth-order distortions. MAO (MAORY Adaptive Optics) is the a developed numerical simulation tool for adaptive optics. It was created especially to simulate the performance of the MAORY MCAO module of the Extremely Large Telescope. It is a full end-to-end Monte-Carlo code able to perform different flavors of adaptive optics simulation. We used it to investigate the performance of a the MAORY and some specific issue related to calibration, acquisition and operation strategies. As, MAORY, MAO will implement Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics combining Laser Guide Stars (LGS) and Natural Guide Stars (NGS) measurements. The implementation of the reference truth WFS completes the scheme. The simulation tool implements the various aspect of the MAORY in an end to end fashion. The code has been developed using IDL and use libraries in C++ and CUDA for efficiency improvements. Here we recall the code architecture, we describe the modeled instrument components and the control strategies implemented in the code.

MAORY is one of the approved instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope. It is an adaptive optics module, enabling high-angular resolution observations in the near infrared by real-time compensation of the wavefront distortions due to atmospheric turbulence and other disturbances such as wind action on the telescope. An overview of the instrument design is given in this paper.

MAORY (Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY) is one of the four instruments for the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) approved for construction. It is an adaptive optics module able to compensate the wavefront disturbances affecting the scientific observations, achieving high strehl ratio and high sky coverage. MAORY will be located on the straight-through port of the telescope Nasmyth platform and shall re-image the telescope focal plane to a wide field camera (MICADO) and a possible future second instrument. A trade-off study among different mechanical design options for the main mechanical structure has been carried out. This paper outlines an overview of the mechanical design that gives a better result in terms of stability, vibrations and manufacturing.

In this paper we present the structure, organization and risk management of the MAORY Consortium, an Italian-French collaboration for the design and construction of the adaptive optics module for the European Large Telescope.

MAORY (Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY) will be the multi-conjugate adaptive optics module for the ELT first light. MAORY is a post focal relay optics and supports the MICADO imager and spectrograph. The tolerance process of MAORY is one of the most important step in the instrument design since it is intended to ensure that MAORY requested performances are satisfied when the final assembled instrument is operative. At the end, the assignment of tolerances to the various opto-mechanical parameters should be a trade-off between final cost of the system and its resulting performances. This paper describes the logic behind the tolerance analysis starting from definition of quantitative figures of merit for MAORY requirements and ending with estimation of MAORY performances perturbed by opto-mechanical tolerances. The method used to estimate tolerances takes care of compensation of errors during assembly/alignment procedure and uses a Root-Sum-Squared (RSS) merit function to combine independent error contributions. There are two requirements that limit the allowable changes of opto-mechanical parameters. The Root-Mean-Squared wavefront error (RMS WFE) and the optical distortion. The first one must satisfy diffraction limited performance over the MICADO Field-of-View (FoV) while the second one must satisfy high astrometric accuracy and precision. As criterion for tolerancing, the defined merit function considers the RMS wavefront referred to star centroids and adds boundary constraints on the compensators and geometric distortion in MICADO FoV. To evaluate the impact of tolerances on astrometry, a Monte Carlo approach was followed validating the expected performances from a pure opto-mechanical point of view.

MAORY is the ELT-MCAO system providing first-light wide-field correction for the near infrared imager and spectrograph MICADO. This paper provides an overview of the systems engineering processes and tools implemented to MAORY project during preliminary design phase and it illustrates, with some practical examples, the role of MAORY technical budgets to derive requirements on subsystems. One of the critical activities in systems engineering is the requirements managing. In line with this, the MAORY team devotes a significant effort to this activity, which follows a well-established process. This involves the MAORY requirements break-down to subsystems level and from here down to subsystems procurements specifications. This paper also presents an overview of the MAORY Technical Budgets. One task of the System Engineering is to manage the technical budgets at system level combining the contributors at subsystems level to meet the overall requirements.

MAORY (Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY) and MICADO (MCAO Imaging CamerA for Deep Observations) will perform the science in the Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics mode of the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope). One of their goals is the multi-object differential astrometry which requires low optical distortion and diffraction limited aberrations. To align MAORY, an automate method will be used during the integration of the instrument and could be part of the calibration strategy at the ELT site. This paper describes the method and the ray-tracing simulations carried out to validate the algorithm. Even in presence of different error sources, the method works in a large range of misalignments bringing the system close to the nominal performances.

Adaptive optics (AO) instruments for the future extremely large telescopes (ELTs) are characterized by advanced optical systems with diffraction-limited optical quality. Low geometric distortion is also crucial for high accuracy astrometric applications. Optical alignment of such systems is a crucial step of the instrument integration. Due to relative inaccessibility of these giant instruments, automatic alignment methods are also favored to improve the instrument availability after major events, such as extraordinary maintenance. The proposed alignment concept for these systems is described: the notable example which is analyzed here is the case of the multiconjugate AO relay for the future ELT. The results of ray-tracing simulations carried out to validate the method are discussed in detail, covering the error sources, which could degrade the alignment performance.

MAORY will be the multi-conjugate adaptive optics module for the E-ELT first light. The baseline is to operate wavefront sensing using 6 Sodium Laser Guide Stars and 3 Natural Guide Stars to solve intrinsic limitations of artificial beacons and to mitigate the impact of the sodium layer structure and variability. In particular, some critical components of MAORY require to be designed and dimensioned in order to reduce the spurious effects arising from the Sodium Layer density distribution and variation. The MAORY end-to-end simulation code has been designed to accurately model the Laser Guide Star image in the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor sub-apertures and to allow sodium profile temporal evolution. The fidelity with which the simulation code translates the sodium profiles in Laser Guide Star images at the wavefront sensor focal plane has been verified using a laboratory Prototype.

MICADO is the E-ELT first-light imager, working at the diffraction limit in the near-infrared. Multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) will be the primary AO mode of MICADO, driving the design of the instrument. It will be provided by MAORY, the E-ELT first-light AO module. MICADO will also come with a SCAO capability, jointly developed by MICADO and MAORY. SCAO will be the first AO mode to be tested at the telescope, in a phased approach of AO integration at the E-ELT. We present in the following the MICADO-MAORY SCAO specifications, the current SCAO prototyping activities at LESIA for E-ELT scale pyramid wavefront sensor (WFS) and real-time computer (RTC), our activities on end-to-end AO simulations and the current preliminary design of SCAO subsystems. We finish by presenting the implementation and current design studies for the high-contrast imaging mode of MICADO, which will make use of the SCAO correction offered to the instrument.

Over the last few years increasing consideration has been given to the study of Laser Guide Stars (LGS) for the measurement of the disturbance introduced by the atmosphere in optical and near-infrared astronomical observations from the ground. A possible method for the generation of a LGS is the excitation of the Sodium layer in the upper atmosphere at approximately 90 km of altitude. Since the Sodium layer is approximately 10 km thick, the artificial reference source looks elongated, especially when observed from the edge of a large aperture. The spot elongation strongly limits the performance of the most common wavefront sensors. The centroiding accuracy in a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, for instance, decreases proportionally to the elongation (in a photon noise dominated regime). To compensate for this effect a straightforward solution is to increase the laser power, i.e. to increase the number of detected photons per subaperture. The scope of the work presented in this paper is twofold: an analysis of the performance of the Weighted Center of Gravity algorithm for centroiding with elongated spots and the determination of the required number of photons to achieve a certain average wavefront error over the telescope aperture., 10 pages, 14 figures

MAORY is one of the four instruments for the E-ELT approved for construction. It is an adaptive optics module offering two compensation modes: multi-conjugate and single-conjugate adaptive optics. The project has recently entered its phase B. A system-level overview of the current status of the project is given in this paper.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) together with external research institutes have built a Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) Demonstrator (MAD) to perform wide field-of-view adaptive optics correction (2′ in K band). The aim of MAD is to demonstrate the on-sky feasibility of the MCAO technique and to evaluate its critical aspects in the framework of both the 2nd generation instrumentation for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and the Overwhelmingly Large Telescope (OWL). The MAD module will be installed on the VLT to perform on-sky observations. MAD comprises two deformable mirrors and two different multi-reference wavefront sensors with natural guide stars. In this article we present the MAD design, some aspects of the MAD calibration and the first closed-loop results in the laboratory in Single Conjugated Adaptive Optics (SCAO) and Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) configurations. Starting from the analysis of the input perturbations related to the Sodium Layer variability, modeled directly on measured sodium layer profiles, we analyze, through a simplified end-to-end simulation code, the impact of the low/medium orders induced on global performance of the European Extremely Large Telescope Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics module MAORY., 7 pages, 5 figures, SPIE conference Proceeding

We present a general method, based on controlled static aberrations induced in the reflectors, to boost receiver performances in solar concentrators. Imaging mirrors coupled with dense arrays suffer from severe performance degradation since the solar irradiance distribution is bell-shaped: mismatch losses occur in particular when the cells are series connected. The method consists in computing static deformations of the reflecting surfaces that can produce, for an adopted concentration ratio, a light spot matching the receiver features better than conventional reflectors. The surfaces and the deformations have been analytically described employing the Zernike polynomials formalism. The concept here described can be applied to a variety of optical configurations and collecting areas. As an example, we extensively investigated a dense array photovoltaic concentrator, dimensioned for a nominal power of about 10 kWe. The ‘‘flat’’ distribution of light we obtain can exploit the PV device cells close to their efficiency limit. A significant gain is thus obtained, with no need of secondary optics or complex dish segmentation and of special features in the receiver electrical scheme. In the design, based on seven 2.6 m mirrors, we addressed also non-optical aspects as the receiver and the supporting mechanics. Optical and mechanical tolerances are demonstrated not to exceed accurate, but conventional, industrial standards. 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

We present a method for the restoration of astronomical images obtained with Adaptive Optics (AO) systems. In order to maximize the scientific return from AO data and, in general, from the data of the next generation telescopes, we developed a restoration method based on deconvolution for the de-blurring of images degraded by a spatially variable PSF. The deconvolution method is based on a partition of the image domain in partially overlapping sub-domains where the PSF can be assumed to be space invariant. The software, called Patch, is written in IDL language and is freely distributed to the community. Here we report a general description of the method and of its graphical interface. The potentiality of the Software Patch have been tested on two completely different astrophysical scenarios: a crowded stellar field and an extended galaxy. Despite the very conservative assumptions made on the Point Spread Function (assumed to be strongly variable across the field of view), we obtained good results in terms of image reconstruction both for the stellar (point-like) case and for the extended galaxy.

The Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics module for the European Extremely Large Telescope has been designed to achieve uniform compensation of the atmospheric turbulence effects on a wide field of view in the near infrared. The design realized in the Phase A of the project is undergoing major revision in order to define a robust baseline in view of the next phases of the project. An overview of the on-going activities is presented.

The scope of this paper is to describe some possible design concepts of the post optical relay inside the multi conjugate adaptive optics module for the European Extremely Large Telescope. The module is planned to be placed at the Nasmyth focus of the telescope. The optical relay must re-image the telescope focal plane with diffraction limited performance and low geometric distortion, for a field of view of 75” and for a wavelength range between 0.8 and 2.4μm. A technical annular field of view with inner diameter of 75” and outer diameter of 160” to search 3 for natural guide stars is also required. Wavefront sensing is performed by means of 6 laser guide stars arranged on a circle of at least 120” diameter while wavefront correction is performed by two deformable mirrors inside the relay, in addition to the telescope adaptive mirror. The final optical design will be a trade-off among adaptive optics performance, optical interface requirements, mechanical interface requirements and technological feasibility of key hardware components. The size of the deformable mirrors and the image quality of the layer conjugates are important design drivers, related to the design of the collimating optics after the input focal plane and to the deformable mirrors tilt respect to the chief ray. The optical interface at the output focal plane must be acceptable for the client instruments, in terms of field curvature, focal ratio and exit pupil position. The number of optical surfaces inside the relay has to be as small as possible to limit thermal background. Splitting of the laser guide star channel from the science light channel may be achieved either in wavelength, by means of a dichroic placed close to a pupil image, or in field, by means of an perforated dichroic placed at an intermediate focal plane. The laser guide star beams have to be focused with acceptable optical performance on a fixed image plane compensating the effects of the sodium layer range variation with Zenith angle during observations. Other relay configurations, in the case of further client instruments to be fed by the relay, are under investigation. The designs must also take into consideration the required clearance among the optical elements to avoid vignetting and mechanical interference issues, while fitting in the available space on the telescope Nasmyth platform. In this paper two different optical design configurations are analysed, taking into account all these aspects. For all the proposed designs the optical performance will be presented.

MAORY is the adaptive optics module of the E-ELT that will feed the MICADO imaging camera through a gravity invariant exit port. MAORY has been foreseen to implement MCAO correction through three high order deformable mirrors driven by the reference signals of six Laser Guide Stars (LGSs) feeding as many Shack-Hartmann Wavefront Sensors. A three Natural Guide Stars (NGSs) system will provide the low order correction. We develop a code for the end-to-end simulation of the MAORY adaptive optics (AO) system in order to obtain high-delity modeling of the system performance. It is based on the IDL language and makes extensively uses of the GPUs. We present near-IR images of five luminous quasars at z~2 and one at z~4 obtained with an experimental adaptive optics instrument at the ESO Very Large Telescope. The observations are part of a program aimed at demonstrating the capabilities of multi-conjugated adaptive optics imaging combined with the use of natural guide stars for high spatial resolution studies on large telescopes. The observations were mostly obtained under poor seeing conditions but in two cases. In spite of these non optimal conditions, the resulting images of point sources have cores of FWHM ~0.2 arcsec. We are able to characterize the host galaxy properties for 2 sources and set stringent upper limits to the galaxy luminosity for the others. We also report on the expected capabilities for investigating the host galaxies of distant quasars with adaptive optics systems coupled with future Extremely Large Telescopes. Detailed simulations show that it will be possible to characterize compact (2-3 kpc) quasar host galaxies for QSOs at z = 2 with nucleus K-magnitude spanning from 15 to 20 (corresponding to absolute magnitude -31 to -26) and host galaxies that are 4 mag fainter than their nuclei., 19 pages, 12 figures, accepted for pubblication in The Astronomical Journal

LINC-NIRVANA (LN) is the near-infrared, Fizeau-type imaging interferometer for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) on Mt. Graham, Arizona, USA (3267m of elevation). The instrument is currently being built by a consortium of German and Italian institutes under the leadership of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany. It will combine the radiation from both 8.4m primary mirrors of LBT in such a way that the sensitivity of a 11.9m telescope and the spatial resolution of a 22.8m telescope will be obtained within a 10.5arcsec x 10.5arcsec scientific field of view. Interferometric fringes of the combined beams are tracked in an oval field with diameters of 1 and 1.5arcmin. In addition, both incoming beams are individually corrected by LN’s multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) system to reduce atmospheric image distortion over a circular field of up to 6arcmin in diameter. This paper gives a comprehensive technical overview of the instrument comprising the detailed design of LN’s four major systems for interferometric imaging and fringe tracking, both in the NIR range of 1 - 2.4μm, as well as atmospheric turbulence correction at two altitudes, both in the visible range of 0.6 - 0.9μm. The resulting performance capabilities and a short outlook of some of the major science goals will be presented. In addition, the roadmap for the related assembly, integration and verification (AIV) process will be discussed. To avoid late interface-related risks, strategies for early hardware as well as software interactions with the telescope have been elaborated. The goal is to ship LN to the LBT in 2014.

Adaptive optics systems based on sodium Laser Guide Stars may exploit Natural Guide Stars to solve intrinsic limitations of artificial beacons, such as tilt indetermination and, in the case of Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics, tilt anisoplanatism. Natural Guide Stars are also required to mitigate the impact of the sodium layer structure and variability: on a 40-meter class telescope, as a consequence of the perspective elongation effect and of the finite Laser Guide Star Wavefront Sensor field of view, spurious wavefront aberrations are generated. The sodium layer may also have transverse structures leading to significant differential effects among Laser Guide Stars. All these issues show up in MAORY, a concept of a Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics module for the European Extremely Large Telescope. Starting from the analysis of the input perturbations to be measured, we derive preliminary requirements for the Natural Guide Star Wavefront Sensor and describe its conceptual design. The Wavefront Sensor uses three natural stars; each wavefront sensor probe consists of a fast tip-tilt and focus channel and a slow channel for monitoring the aberrations induced by the sodium layer. The dual-channel design allows the efficient exploitation of the few natural stars typically available in the field of view, while providing a way to monitor the potential anisoplanatism due to the differential sodium effects among the LGSs.

Adaptive Optics (AO) images are characterized by structured Point Spread Function (PSF), with sharp core and extended halo, and by significant variations across the field of view. In order to enable the extraction of high-precision quantitative information and improve the scientific exploitation of AO data, efforts in the PSF modeling and in the integration of suitable models in a code for image analysis are needed. We present the current status of a study on the modeling of AO PSFs based on observational data taken with present telescopes (VLT and LBT). The methods under development include parametric models and hybrid (i.e. analytical / numerical) models adapted to various types of PSFs that can show up in AO images. The specific features of AO data, such as the mainly radial variation of the PSF with respect to the guide star position in single-reference AO, are taken into account as much as possible. The final objective of this project is the development of a flexible software package, based on the Starfinder code (Diolaiati et Al 2000), specifically dedicated to the PSF estimation and to the astrometric and photometric analysis of AO images with complex and spatially variable PSF. © (2012) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Almost all the scientific instruments foreseen to be installed on the European Extremely Large Telescope claim for the Sodium Laser Guide Stars for an effective adaptive correction, over a large fraction of the sky, of the wavefront aberrated by the atmospheric turbulence. These artificial sources present an elongated, irregular and time variable intensity profile due to the density variations of the Sodium layer, where they form. On the focal plane of a Shack- Hartmann wavefront sensor, the baseline sensor of the adaptive optics modules, the laser guide stars appear as elongated spots on the lenslet array focal plane. Thus the local wavefront measurements inside the sub-apertures require some investigations to evaluate the performance of advanced centroiding algorithms for the extended spots position measurement to reduce the residual wavefront error. The laboratory prototype presented in this paper reproduces the expected conditions, for an Extremely Large Telescope case, when measuring the wavefront of a Laser Guide Star by means of a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. A simplified version of the prototype has been successfully integrated and tested in 2010. We describe the design of new components, that permit to achieve the following features: a programmable setting of the elongated source intensity profile, to be able to reproduce realistically the time variable Sodium layer density vertical profile; the simulation, one at a time, of a multiple laser guide stars launching system by means of an optical derotator that rotates the elongated spot pattern on the detector plane; the implementation of a two layers turbulence model that introduces a differential wavefront aberration according to the azimuth angle of the laser guide stars and simulates the time evolution of the turbulence. The scheduled test program is finally presented.

GeMS (the Gemini Multi-conjugated adaptive optics System) is a facility instrument for the Gemini-South telescope. It will deliver a uniform, diffraction-limited image quality at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths over an extended FoV or more than 1 arcmin across. GeMS is a unique and challenging project from the technological point of view and because of its control complexity. The system includes 5 laser guide stars, 3 natural guide stars, 3 deformable mirrors optically conjugated at 0, 4.5 and 9km and 1 tip-tilt mirror. After 10 years since the beginning of the project, GeMS is finally reaching a state in which all the subsystems have been received, integrated and, in the large part, tested. In this paper, we report on the progress and current status of the different sub-systems with a particular emphasis on the calibrations, control and optimization of the AO bench.
