Al Wolters recently suggested that Zech. 1.11c, ‘all the earth is at rest and quiet’, alludes to Isa. 14.7. His interpretation, however, does not fit well with the context of Zechariah's vision and does not take into account canonical Zechariah's method of allusion. This article offers a reinterpretation of the allusion proposed by Wolters in light of these two things. Further, it seeks to establish two additional Jeremian texts to which Zechariah alludes, both of which fit the allusive mold cast by Zechariah's use of Isaiah.

Scholars have offered many suggestions for understanding the ephah in Zechariah 5:5-11 without consensus. An allusion to Jeremiah 3:2 offers a new possibility. The הָאֵיפָה (ephah) in Zechariah recalls and localizes the אֵיפֹה (where) of Israel’s harlotry recounted in Jeremiah.

There is a tension caused by the incompatibility of the syntax and context of Zechariah 1,3a. This article proposes that an allusion to the earlier prophetic stream eases that tension. Further, it examines Zechariah’s method of allusion in this verse, based upon the allusive character of the surrounding introductory verses (1,1–6).
