Abstract

The Common Problems Project (CP2) is an interdisciplinary, problem-based pedagogy that was launched in 2015 by four partner colleges in the State University of New York (SUNY) system (Cortland, Oneonta, Oswego, and Plattsburgh). Since its inception, 100 faculty have participated in CP2 and integrated the pedagogy into 134 courses to implement 47 collaborative projects. CP2 is based on a simple but innovative approach in which instructors from different disciplines identify a real-world problem they have in common. They pair their relevant existing classes so that students can work in interdisciplinary teams to propose solutions to the problem. This paper describes CP2 and its theoretical underpinnings, provides the results of a three-pronged approach to assessment, and outlines recommendations for faculty and institutions who may be interested in replicating CP2 on their campuses. CP2 model holds promise for a future of collaborative problem solving as a pedagogical approach, and, as such, this article will be of interest to a wide range of scholars, practitioners, educators, and administrators.

7. The Impact of Re-Accreditation Processes and Institutional Environment upon a Community College's Efforts to Meet Minimum Standards for Assessing General Education

Abstract

As one result of the accountability movement in American postsecondary education, accrediting agencies have increased their emphasis on student learning outcomes assessment. Among other consequences, this change has impacted the manner in which institutions of higher education (IHEs) plan, implement, assess, and revise the general education portion of their curricula. Yet, although accreditation has promoted the practice of general education assessment, studies suggest that it has not necessarily helped IHEs to use assessment effectively for improvement. In particular, community colleges have faced unique challenges in implementing general education assessment plans and using their results for improvement. This single case study sought to illuminate the manner in which the convergence of environmental characteristics and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education's (MSCHE) re-accreditation and sanctioning processes impacted a community college's plans for assessing general education. To accomplish this, the researcher conducted an intensive examination of a community college, which MSCHE had recently required to submit a progress report that detailed specific improvements to the IHE's plan for assessing general education. The data showed that re-accreditation served as a primary motivator for changes to this IHE's approach to general education assessment. However, interview responses suggested that MSCHE could have assisted the community college by providing more support as institutional leaders sought to produce a required progress report that sufficiently documented their general education assessment plan. Four overarching components of the institutional environment had a complex impact on the community college's ability to meet accreditation standards. The physical environment neither stimulated nor inhibited efforts to meet standards at this IHE and the human aggregate environment had a predominantly positive impact on these efforts. Data related to the organizational environment proved mixed. While some stimulants of change existed, other organizational factors inhibited the ability of this community college to meet MSCHE standards related to general education assessment. Finally, the constructed environment of collective beliefs had an overwhelmingly positive impact on these efforts. These findings led to several recommendations for the case study IHE, MSCHE, the state, and future researchers. In addition, they have yielded valuable insights about the combined impact of the regional accreditation process and environmental characteristics upon an IHE's ability to meet standards in areas such as general education and assessment. The recommendations may assist other IHEs needing to improve both their general education assessment plans and, more broadly, their ability to meet the standards of regional accrediting bodies. Furthermore, they may assist regional accrediting bodies and states with improving their ability to facilitate substantive change. Abstract

This paper aims to develop a generalized framework for vision-based multiple ground target finding and action using a low-cost UAV system. The framework can be effectively deployed on a variety of UAV application with the suitable detection module in fully and supervised autonomous missions such as Search and rescue, inspection of flight debris, and spot spraying application of weedicide/pesticide. The developed framework was verified using Software in the Loop (SITL) simulation and outdoor flight tests. Results show that the framework is capable to perform multiple target finding and action task in real-world conditions.

12. A deep reinforcement learning framework for UAV navigation in indoor environments

Abstract

This paper presents a framework for UAV navigation in indoor environments using a deep reinforcement learning based approach. The implementation models the problem as two seperate problems, a Markov Decision Process (MDP), and a Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDP), separating the search problem into high-level planning and low-level action under uncertainty. We apply deep learning techniques to this layered problem to produce policies for the framework that allow a UAV to plan, act, and react. The approach is simulated and visualised using Gazebo and is evaluated using policies trained using deep-learning. Using recent deep-learning techniques as the basis of the framework, our results indicate that it is capable of providin smooth navigation for a simulated UAV agent exploring an indoor environment with uncertainty in its position. Once extended to real-world operation, this framework could enable UAVs to be applied in an increasing number of applications, from underground mining and oil refinery surveys and inspections, to search and rescue missions and biosecurity surveys.

Abstract

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are increasingly used in a wide range of applications such as civil infrastructure inspection, agriculture, ecology and remote sensing. UAV autonomous operation relies on the use of GPS in order to localise and plan a mission, however there are places in which GPS positioning is limited or not available, such as in urban and natural canyons or below the canopy. This paper presents the development of a framework that enables a drone to navigate in an unknown, unstructured and GPS-denied environment. The aim of this research is to combine the use of localisation algorithms such as Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) with Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDP) algorithms into a framework in which the navigation and exploration tasks are modelled as sequential decision problems under uncertainty. The framework tested in simulation allows the UAV to navigate safely, avoiding collisions whilst guiding exploration in order to create an occupancy map of the UAV's surroundings. The proposed system guides the UAV through a series of actions in order to maximise the information gain about the unknown environment. The implementation of the proposed framework will enable the use of UAV for autonomous navigation and exploration in challenging environments where GPS positioning is not available or limited.

Abstract

The system presented is an autonomous multirotor-based aerial manipulator that is capable of searching an environment, visually identifying a payload, and performing a pick-and-place type maneuver. Full 3D trajectories for the search stage of the flight are predefined, with the grasping maneuver generated dynamically once the payload is identified. The manipulator and payload interactions with the multirotor base are actively compensated for by the controller to ensure stable flight during all maneuvers. Experimental results are analyzed to evaluate the performance of the system.

Abstract

A Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission is a goal of the Mars Program. Recently, NASA and JPL have been studying the possibility of a Mars Sample Return some time in the next decade of Mars exploration. In 2001, JPL commissioned four industry teams to make a fresh examination of MSR architectures. Six papers on these studies were presented at last year's conference. As new fiscal realities of a cost-capped Mars Exploration Program unfolded, it was evident that these MSR concepts, which included mobility and subsurface sample acquisition, did not fit reasonably within a balanced program. Therefore, at the request of NASA and the science community, JPL asked the four industry teams plus JPL's Team X to explore ways to reduce the cost of a MSR. A NASA-created MSR Science Steering Group (SSG) established a reduced set of requirements for these new studies that built upon the previous year's work. As a result, a new 'Groundbreaking' approach to MSR was established that is well understood based on the studies and independent cost assessments by Aerospace Corporation and SAIC. The Groundbreaking approach appears to be what a contemporary, balanced Mars Exploration Program can afford, has turned out to be justifiable by the MSR Science Steering Group, and has been endorsed by the Mars science community at large. This paper gives a brief overview of the original 2001 study results and discusses the process leading to the new studies, the studies themselves, and the results.

Abstract

This paper describes field trials of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) integrated with advanced digital hyperspectral and multispectral sensors to increase the efficiency of existing surveillance practices (human inspectors and insect traps) and application to detect a known endemic biosecurity pest (grape phylloxera) in Victorian vineyards. We evaluated airborne RGB, multi and hyperspectral imagery at two different vineyards with multiple grapevine varieties, in two separate time periods and under different levels of phylloxera infestation. The methods used to incorporate the sensors to the UAV, the flight operations and the processing workflow of the datasets from each imagery type are described. The ultimate aim of this study is to create an integrated methodology for collecting and processing multi and hyperspectral data with the purpose of remote sensing different variables in different applications such as, in this case, plant biosecurity. The development of a methodology for the collection and analysis of airborne multi and hyperspectral imagery would provide scientists with reliable data collection protocols and faster processing techniques to achieve different remote sensing objectives.

23. UAV tracking of mobile target in occluded, cluttered and GPS-denied environments

Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach for mobile target tracking using a UAV flying in a cluttered and GPS-denied environment that occludes the target partially and momentarily. The problem is modelled as a sequential decision process under uncertainty using the Partially Observable Markov Decision Process framework (POMDP). The motion of the UAV is planned as sequences of high-level actions in order to optimise a multi-objective mission. A modular system executes the motion planning. The UAV and target dynamics models are included in the POMDP transition function as a black-box simulator. The target is detected using a front facing camera onboard the UAV. A model of the projection of the target and obstacles into the image plane of the camera is presented and used in the POMDP transition function. This model enables the POMDP solver to include the occlusions in the Field of View (FOV) of the camera caused by the obstacles in the scenario. Results in simulation indicate that the developed system is able to guide the UAV towards locations in which the target tracking duration is maximised whilst avoiding collisions with obstacles. This research has the potential to be used below the forest canopy, in fault or GPS-denied environments, underground mines and urban canyons.

Abstract

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being used in numerous applications, such as remote sensing, environmental monitoring, ecology and search and rescue missions. Effective use of UAVs depends on the ability of the system to navigate in the mission scenario, especially if the UAV is required to navigate autonomously. There are particular scenarios in which UAV navigation faces challenges and risks. This creates the need for robust motion planning capable of overcoming different sources of uncertainty. One example is a UAV flying to search, track and follow a mobile ground target in GPS-denied space, such as below canopy or in between buildings, while avoiding obstacles. A UAV navigating under these conditions can be affected by uncertainties in its localisation and motion due to occlusion of GPS signals and the use of low cost sensors. Additionally, the presence of strong winds in the airspace can disturb the motion of the UAV. In this paper, we describe and flight test a novel formulation of a UAV mission for searching, tracking and following a mobile ground target. This mission is formulated as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and implemented in real flight using a modular framework. We modelled the UAV dynamic system, the uncertainties in motion and localisation of both the UAV and the target, and the wind disturbances. The framework computes a motion plan online for executing motion commands instead of flying to way-points to accomplish the mission. The system enables the UAV to plan its motion allowing it to execute information gathering actions to reduce uncertainty by detecting landmarks in the scenario, while making predictions of the mobile target trajectory and the wind speed based on observations. Abstract

Monitoring of environmental gases is a demanding task that can require long periods of observation and large numbers of sensors. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) presently represent a suitable alternative to monitor large, remote, and difficult to access areas. Due to the wide range and diversity of shape and size, UAVs now possess the capability of carrying specialized sensor modules that can accurately monitor gas concentrations. This paper describes the design and flight testing of a UAV which carries an on-board camera and a carbon dioxide gas sensor and is capable of autonomous gas sensing while simultaneously visually detecting predefined targets placed at locations inside a room. The detection system autonomously navigates around the flight area using a waypoint navigation system and hovers for 10 seconds once the target has been visually identified taking Air Quality (AQ) samples as it does so. Laboratory, bench and field test results demonstrate the capability of the UAV to detect targets placed in a room and analyse the air quality of samples taken during flight above the target. The data collected during the flight is transmitted, in real time, back to a Ground Control Station (GCS) for visualisation and analysis, where 3D mapping of the target location and gas concentration is presented via a web interface. Test cases verify the capability of the subsystem’s integration and the operation of the UAV system as a whole. The image processing algorithm used for the target detection, based on a cascade method, proved to be dependent on the frame transmission rates, which can make the software considerably slower. Abstract

This paper presents an autonomous vision-based controller for a quadrotor with a suspended slung load capable of positioning the platform and the load above a ground target. A model of the coupled system (quadrotor and load) is first developed, before augmenting the model with the image kinematics for a four point coplanar target object. The resulting image based control framework considers two different visual servoing methods: Image-based (IBVS) and Position-based visual servoing (PBVS). The control law of the IBVS is developed using the direct feedback from image plane measurements, whereas the PBVS requires additional estimation of the target object pose (position and orientation). Simulated and experimental results are presented using 3 different control configurations. Using the hybrid configuration that combines both IBVS & PBVS methods or a solely PBVS configuration demonstrated robustness properties, whereas using the IBVS configuration showed unsatisfactory results and higher sensitivity to disturbances and control parameters. The IBVS & PBVS control configuration results in better performance in the path following task, and lower RMS error between the vehicle and target position compared to the other two configurations.

28. Autonomous UAV with vision based on-board decision making for remote sensing and precision agriculture

Abstract

In recent years, a phenomenal increase in the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has been observed in a broad range of applications in various fields of study. Precision agriculture has emerged as a major field of interest, integrating unmanned monitoring of crop health into general agricultural practices for researchers are utilizing UAV to collect data for post-analysis. This paper describes a modular and generic system that is able to control the UAV using computer vision. A configuration approach similar to the Observation, Orientation, Decision and Action (OODA) loop has been implemented to allow the system to perform on-board decision making. The detection of an object of interest is performed by computer vision functionality. This allows the UAV to change its planned path accordingly and approach the target in order to perform a close inspection, or conduct a manoeuvres such as the application of herbicide or collection of higher resolution agricultural images. The results show the ability of the developed system to dynamically change its current goal and implement an inspection manoeuvre to perform necessary actions after detecting the target. The vision based navigation system and on-board decision making were demonstrated in three types of tests: ArUco Marker detection, colour detection and weed detection. The results are measured based on the sensitivity and the selectivity of the algorithm. The sensitivity is the ability of the algorithm to identify and detect the true positive target while the selectivity is the capability of the algorithm to filter out the false negatives for detection targets. Results indicate that the system is capable of detecting ArUco Marker with 99% sensitivity and 100% selectivity at 5 m above the ground level. 31. LunaRoo: Designing a hopping lunar science payload

Abstract

We describe a hopping science payload solution designed to exploit the Moon's lower gravity to leap up to 20m above the surface. The entire solar-powered robot is compact enough to fit within a 10cm cube, whilst providing unique observation and mission capabilities by creating imagery during the hop. The LunaRoo concept is a proposed payload to fly onboard a Google Lunar XPrize entry. Its compact form is specifically designed for lunar exploration and science mission within the constraints given by PTScientists. The core features of LunaRoo are its method of locomotion - hopping like a kangaroo - and its imaging system capable of unique over-the-horizon perception. The payload will serve as a proof of concept, highlighting the benefits of alternative mobility solutions, in particular enabling observation and exploration of terrain not traversable by wheeled robots. in addition providing data for beyond line-of-sight planning and communications for surface assets, extending overall mission capabilities.

32. Simulation and modelling tools for quantitative safety assessments of unmanned aircraft systems and operations

Abstract

This paper presents two simple simulation and modelling tools designed to aid in the safety assessment required for unmanned aircraft operations within unsegregated airspace. First, a fast pair-wise encounter generator is derived to simulate the See and Avoid environment. The utility of the encounter generator is demonstrated through the development of a hybrid database and a statistical performance evaluation of an autonomous See and Avoid decision and control strategy. Second, an unmanned aircraft mission generator is derived to help visualise the impact of multiple persistent unmanned operations on existing air traffic. The utility of the mission generator is demonstrated through an example analysis of a mixed airspace environment using real traffic data in Australia. These simulation and modelling approaches constitute a useful and extensible set of analysis tools, that can be leveraged to help explore some of the more fundamental and challenging problems facing civilian unmanned aircraft system integration.

Abstract

This paper presents a statistical aircraft trajectory clustering approach aimed at discriminating between typical manned and expected unmanned traffic patterns. First, a resampled version of each trajectory is modelled using a mixture of Von Mises distributions (circular statistics). Second, the remodelled trajectories are globally aligned using tools from bioinformatics. Third, the alignment scores are used to cluster the trajectories using an iterative k-medoids approach and an appropriate distance function. The approach is then evaluated using synthetically generated unmanned aircraft flights combined with real air traffic position reports taken over a sector of Northern Queensland, Australia. Results suggest that the technique is useful in distinguishing between expected unmanned and manned aircraft traffic behaviour, as well as identifying some common conventional air traffic patterns.

34. Uncertainty based online planning for UAV target finding in cluttered and GPS-denied environments

Abstract

There are some scenarios in which Unmmaned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) navigation becomes a challenge due to the occlusion of GPS systems signal, the presence of obstacles and constraints in the space in which a UAV operates. An additional challenge is presented when a target whose location is unknown must be found within a confined space. In this paper we present a UAV navigation and target finding mission, modelled as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) using a state-of-the-art online solver in a real scenario using a low cost commercial multi rotor UAV and a modular system architecture running under the Robotic Operative System (ROS). Using POMDP has several advantages to conventional approaches as they take into account uncertainties in sensor information. We present a framework for testing the mission with simulation tests and real flight tests in which we model the system dynamics and motion and perception uncertainties. The system uses a quad-copter aircraft with an board downwards looking camera without the need of GPS systems while avoiding obstacles within a confined area. Results indicate that the system has 100% success rate in simulation and 80% rate during flight test for finding targets located at different locations.

35. Open source computer-vision based guidance system for UAVs on-board decision making

Abstract

The use of UAVs for remote sensing tasks; e.g. agriculture, search and rescue is increasing. The ability for UAVs to autonomously find a target and perform on-board decision making, such as descending to a new altitude or landing next to a target is a desired capability. Computer-vision functionality allows the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to follow a designated flight plan, detect an object of interest, and change its planned path. In this paper we describe a low cost and an open source system where all image processing is achieved on-board the UAV using a Raspberry Pi 2 microprocessor interfaced with a camera. The Raspberry Pi and the autopilot are physically connected through serial and communicate via MAVProxy. The Raspberry Pi continuously monitors the flight path in real time through USB camera module. The algorithm checks whether the target is captured or not. If the target is detected, the position of the object in frame is represented in Cartesian coordinates and converted into estimate GPS coordinates. In parallel, the autopilot receives the target location approximate GPS and makes a decision to guide the UAV to a new location. This system also has potential uses in the field of Precision Agriculture, plant pest detection and disease outbreaks which cause detrimental financial damage to crop yields if not detected early on. Results show the algorithm is accurate to detect 99% of object of interest and the UAV is capable of navigation and doing on-board decision making.

36. Development of a robust framework for an outdoor mobile manipulation UAV

Abstract

There is a growing interest to autonomously collect or manipulate objects in remote or unknown environments, such as mountains, gullies, bush-land, or rough terrain. There are several limitations of conventional methods using manned or remotely controlled aircraft. The capability of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) used in parallel with robotic manipulators could overcome some of these limitations. By enabling the autonomous exploration of both naturally hazardous environments, or areas which are biologically, chemically, or radioactively contaminated, it is possible to collect samples and data from such environments without directly exposing personnel to such risks. This paper covers the design, integration, and initial testing of a framework for outdoor mobile manipulation UAV. The framework is designed to allow further integration and testing of complex control theories, with the capability to operate outdoors in unknown environments. The results obtained act as a reference for the effectiveness of the integrated sensors and low-level control methods used for the preliminary testing, as well as identifying the key technologies needed for the development of an outdoor capable system.

37. Design and flight testing of a bio-inspired plume tracking algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles

Abstract

There is an increased interest on the use of UAVs for environmental research such as tracking bush fires, volcanic eruptions, chemical accidents or pollution sources. The aim of this paper is to describe the theory and results of a bio-inspired plume tracking algorithm. A method for generating sparse plumes in a virtual environment was also developed. Results indicated the ability of the algorithms to track plumes in 2D and 3D. The system has been tested with hardware in the loop (HIL) simulations and in flight using a CO2 gas sensor mounted to a multi-rotor UAV. The UAV is controlled by the plume tracking algorithm running on the ground control station (GCS).

Abstract

There is an increased interest in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for load transportation from environmental remote sensing to construction and parcel delivery. One of the main challenges is accurate control of the load position and trajectory. This paper presents an assessment of real flight trials for the control of an autonomous multi-rotor with a suspended slung load using only visual feedback to determine the load position. This method uses an onboard camera to take advantage of a common visual marker detection algorithm to robustly detect the load location. The load position is calculated using an onboard processor, and transmitted over a wireless network to a ground station integrating MATLAB/SIMULINK and Robotic Operating System (ROS) and a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) to control both the load and the UAV. To evaluate the system performance, the position of the load determined by the visual detection system in real flight is compared with data received by a motion tracking system. The multi-rotor position tracking performance is also analyzed by conducting flight trials using perfect load position data and data obtained only from the visual system. Results show very accurate estimation of the load position (~5% Offset) using only the visual system and demonstrate that the need for an external motion tracking system is not needed for this task.

Abstract

There is an increased interest on the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for wildlife and feral animal monitoring around the world. This paper describes a novel system which uses a predictive dynamic application that places the UAV ahead of a user, with a low cost thermal camera, a small onboard computer that identifies heat signatures of a target animal from a predetermined altitude and transmits that target’s GPS coordinates. A map is generated and various data sets and graphs are displayed using a GUI designed for easy use. The paper describes the hardware and software architecture and the probabilistic model for downward facing camera for the detection of an animal. Behavioral dynamics of target movement for the design of a Kalman filter and Markov model based prediction algorithm are used to place the UAV ahead of the user. Geometrical concepts and Haversine formula are applied to the maximum likelihood case in order to make a prediction regarding a future state of the user, thus delivering a new way point for autonomous navigation. Results show that the system is capable of autonomously locating animals from a predetermined height and generate a map showing the location of the animals ahead of the user.

40. Multi-rotor with suspended load: System Dynamics and Control Toolbox

Abstract

There is an increasing demand for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to carry suspended loads as this can provide significant benefits to several applications in agriculture, law enforcement and construction. The load impact on the underlying system dynamics should not be neglected as significant feedback forces may be induced on the vehicle during certain flight manoeuvres. The constant variation in operating point induced by the slung load also causes conventional controllers to demand increased control effort. Much research has focused on standard multi-rotor position and attitude control with and without a slung load. However, predictive control schemes, such as Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC), have not yet been fully explored. To this end, we present a novel controller for safe and precise operation of multi-rotors with heavy slung load in three dimensions. The paper describes a System Dynamics and Control Simulation Toolbox for use with MATLAB/SIMULINK which includes a detailed simulation of the multi-rotor and slung load as well as a predictive controller to manage the nonlinear dynamics whilst accounting for system constraints. It is demonstrated that the controller simultaneously tracks specified waypoints and actively damps large slung load oscillations. A linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) is derived and control performance is compared. Results show the improved performance of the predictive controller for a larger flight envelope, including aggressive manoeuvres and large slung load displacements. The computational cost remains relatively small, amenable to practical implementations.

Abstract

This paper describes a generic and integrated solar powered remote Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) gas sensing system. The system uses a generic gas sensing system for CH4 and CO2 concentrations using metal oxide (MoX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors, and a new solar cell encapsulation method to power the UASs as well as a data management platform to store, analyse and share the information with operators and external users. The system was successfully field tested at ground and low altitudes, collecting, storing and transmitting data in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping. The system can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications, especially in agriculture, bushfires, mining studies, opening the way to a ubiquitous low cost environmental monitoring. Abstract

We report on a study of [ital W]+ photon production in approximately 20 pb[sup [minus]1] of [ital p][minus][ital [bar p]] collisions at [radical][ital s]=1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our results are in good agreement with standard model expectations and are used to obtain limits on anomalous [ital CP]-conserving [ital WW][gamma] couplings of [minus]2.3[lt][Delta][kappa][lt]2.2 for [lambda]=0 and [minus]0.7[lt][lambda][lt]0.7 for [Delta][kappa]=0 at 95% C.L. We obtain the same limits for [ital CP]-violating couplings. These results provide limits on the higher-order electromagnetic moments of the [ital W] boson of 0.8[lt][ital g][sub [ital W]][lt]3.1 for [ital q][sup [ital e]][sub [ital W]]=1 and [minus]0.6[lt][ital q][sup [ital e]][sub [ital W]][lt]2.7 for [ital g][sub [ital W]]=2 at 95% C.L.

Abstract

Antiproton-proton elastic scattering was measured at c.m.s. energies [radical][ital s] =546 and 1800 GeV in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.025[lt][minus][ital t][lt]0.29 GeV[sup 2]. The data are well described by the exponential form [ital e][sup [ital b][ital t]] with a slope [ital b]=15.28[plus minus]0.58 (16.98[plus minus]0.25) GeV[sup [minus]2] at [radical][ital s] =546 (1800) GeV. The elastic scattering cross sections are, respectively, [sigma][sub el]=12.87[plus minus]0.30 and 19.70[plus minus]0.85 mb.

Abstract

The average b-hadron lifetime has been measured using a high statistics sample of {ital B} {r_arrow} {ital J}/{psi}{Chi} decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We use a sample with an integrated luminosity of {approx} 90 {ital pb}{sup -1} recorded during the 1994-95 running period. The decay vertices of {approx} 62656 inclusive {ital J}/{psi} {r_arrow} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} candidates have been reconstructed using information from a silicon vertex-detector. The measured {ital B}lifetime, which is the average over all b-hadrons produced in {ital p}{ital {anti p}} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV weighted by their branching ratios into {ital J}/{psi}, is 1.524 {+-} 0.015 ({ital stat}){sup +0.035}{sub -0.026} ({ital sys}) ps. The precision of this measurement is significantly improved compared to the inclusive lifetime measurement published previously using {approx} 10 {ital pb}{sup -1}.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the [ital b]-quark cross section in 1.8 TeV [ital p]-[ital [bar p]] collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab using muonic [ital b]-quark decays. In the central rapidity region ([vert bar][ital y][sup [ital b]][vert bar][lt]1.0), the cross section is 295[plus minus]21[plus minus]75 nb (59[plus minus]14[plus minus]15 nb) for [ital p][sub [ital T]][sup [ital b]][gt]21 GeV/[ital c] (29 GeV/[ital c]). Comparisons are made to previous measurements and next-to-leading order QCD calculations.

Abstract

The W production cross section times the branching ratio for W→lν, l=e,μ decays has been measured as a function of the associated jet multiplicity. The data have been recorded at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1988-89 run. Abstract

Inclusive jet cross sections have been measured in pp collisions at s =546 and 1800 GeV, using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The ratio of jet cross sections is compared to predictions from simple scaling and O(as3) QCD. Abstract

The dijet angular distribution is measured in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. This measurement covers higher mass ranges and larger scattering angles than previously possible. Good agreement is observed between the data and both leading-order [O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{2}$)] and next-to-leading order [O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{3}$)] QCD calculations. A limit on quark compositeness of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}$g1.0 TeV is obtained.
