Context: Methanol masers of Class I (collisionally-pumped) and Class II (radiatively-pumped) have been studied in great detail in our Galaxy in a variety of astrophysical environments such as shocks and star-forming regions and are helpful to analyze the properties of the dense interstellar medium. However, the study of methanol masers in external galaxies is still in its infancy. Aims: Our main goal is to search for methanol masers in the central molecular zone (CMZ; inner 500 pc) of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. Methods: Covering a frequency range between 84 and 373 GHz ($\lambda$ = 3.6 to 0.8 mm) at high angular (1.6"$\sim$27 pc) and spectral ($\sim$8--9 km s$^{-1}$) resolution with the ALMA large program ALCHEMI, we have probed different regions across the CMZ of NGC 253. In order to look for methanol maser candidates, we employed the rotation diagram method and a set of radiative transfer models. Results: We detect for the first time masers above 84 GHz in NGC 253, covering an ample portion of the $J_{-1}\rightarrow(J-$ 1)$_{0}-E$ line series (at 84, 132, 229, and 278 GHz) and the $J_{0}\rightarrow(J-$ 1)$_{1}-A$ series (at 95, 146, and 198 GHz). This confirms the presence of the Class I maser line at 84 GHz, already reported but now being detected in more than one location. For the $J_{-1}\rightarrow(J-$ 1)$_{0}-E$ line series, we observe a lack of Class I maser candidates in the central star-forming disk. Conclusions: The physical conditions for maser excitation in the $J_{-1}\rightarrow(J-$ 1)$_{0}-E$ line series can be weak shocks and cloud-cloud collisions as suggested by shock tracers (SiO and HNCO) in bi-symmetric shock/active regions located in the outskirts of the CMZ. On the other hand, the presence of photodissociation regions due to a high star-formation rate would be needed to explain the lack of Class I masers in the very central regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 29 pages, 17 figures (4 in Appendix)

At a distance of 2.4kpc, W33 is an outstanding massive and luminous 10pc sized star forming complex containing quiescent infrared dark clouds as well as highly active infrared bright cloud cores heated by young massive stars. We report measurements of ammonia (NH$_3$) inversion lines in the frequency range 18--26GHz, obtained with the 40" resolution of the 100 m Effelsberg telescope. We have detected the ($J$, $K$)=(1,1), (2,2), (3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6), (2,1) and (3,2) transitions. There is a maser line in the (3,3) transition towards W33 Main. Brightness temperature and line shape indicate no significant variation during the last $\sim$36yr. We have determined kinetic temperatures, column densities and other physical properties of NH$_3$ and the molecular clouds in W33. For the total-NH$_3$ column density, we find for 40"(0.5pc) sized regions 6.0($\pm$2.1)$\times$10$^{14}$, 3.5($\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{15}$, 3.4($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$, 3.1($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$, 2.8($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$ and 2.0($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$cm$^{-2}$ at the peak positions of W33 Main, W33 A, W33 B, W33 Main1, W33 A1 and W33 B1, respectively. W33 Main has a total-NH$_3$ fractional abundance of 1.3($\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{-9}$ at the peak position. High values of 1.4($\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{-8}$, 1.6($\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{-8}$, 3.4($\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{-8}$, 1.6($\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{-8}$ and 4.0($\pm$1.2)$\times$10$^{-8}$ are obtained at the central positions of W33 A, W33 B, W33 Main1, W33 A1, and W33 B1. From this, we confirm the already previously proposed different evolutionary stages of the six W33 clumps and find that there is no hot core in the region approaching the extreme conditions encountered in W51-IRS2 or Sgr B2. The ortho-to-para-NH$_3$ abundance ratios suggest that ammonia should have been formed in the gas phase or on dust grain mantles at kinetic temperatures of $\gtrsim$20K., Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, accepted by A&A

Measuring isotopic ratios is a sensitive technique used to obtain information on stellar nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution. We present measurements of the carbon and sulphur abundances in the interstellar medium of the central region of our Galaxy. The selected targets are the +50km/s Cloud and several l.o.s. clouds towards Sgr B2(N). Towards the +50km/s Cloud, we observed the J=2-1 rotational transitions of CS, C34S, 13CS, C33S, and 13C34S, and the J=3-2 transitions of CS and C34S with the IRAM-30m telescope, as well as the J=6-5 transitions of C34S and 13CS with the APEX 12m telescope, all in emission. The J=2-1 rotational transitions of CS, C34S, 13CS, and 13C34S were observed with ALMA in the envelope of Sgr B2(N), with those of CS and C34S also observed in the l.o.s. clouds towards Sgr B2(N), all in absorption. In the +50km/s Cloud we derive a 12C13C isotopic ratio of ~22.1, that leads, with the measured 13CS/C34S line intensity ratio, to a 32S/34S ratio of 16.3+3.0-2.4. We also derive the 32S/34S isotopic ratio more directly from the two isotopologues 13CS and 13C34S, which leads to an independent 32S/34S estimation of 16.3+2.1-1.7 and 17.9+-5.0 for the +50km/s Cloud and Sgr B2(N), respectively. We also obtain a 34S/33S ratio of ~4.3 in the +50 km/s Cloud. Previous studies observed a decreasing trend in the 32S/34S isotopic ratios when approaching the Galactic centre. Our result indicates a termination of this tendency at least at a galactocentric distance of 130-30+60 pc. This is at variance with findings based on 12C/13C, 14N/15N and 18O/17O isotope ratios, where the above-mentioned trend is observed to continue right to the central molecular zone. This can indicate a drop in the production of massive stars at the Galactic centre, in the same line as recent metallicity gradient studies, and opens the work towards a comparison with Galactic and stellar evolution models., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

We investigate the galaxy population in a field of the Perseus cluster that roughly covers the virial radius of the cluster. The galaxies were selected on Schmidt CCD images in B and H alpha in combination with SDSS images. We present a catalogue of 1294 galaxies. Morphological information was obtained for 90% of the galaxies from the `eyeball' inspection, partly supported by the surface brightness profile analysis. Redshifts were taken from SDSS, literature sources, and own spectroscopic observations and are available for 24% of the catalogues galaxies. The galaxy catalogue is used to derive cluster properties, such as radial profiles, indications of sub-structure, virial mass, and viral radius and to study the cluster galaxy population with regard to morphological types and peculiarities, star formation rates and active galactic nuclei. In addition to the statistical approach, we present brief individual descriptions of 18 cluster galaxies with conspicuous morphological peculiarities. Methanol (CH3OH) is one of the most abundant interstellar molecules, offering a vast number of transitions to be studied, including many maser lines. While the strongest Galactic CH3OH lines, the so-called class II masers, show no indications for the presence of superluminous counterparts in external galaxies, the less luminous Galactic class I sources appear to be different. Here we report class I 36GHz CH3OH 4(-1) - 3(0) E line emission from the nearby galaxies Maffei2 and IC342, measured with the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg at three different epochs within a time span of about five weeks. The 36GHz methanol line of Maffei2 is the second most luminous among the sources detected with certainty outside the Local Group of galaxies. This is not matched by the moderate infrared luminosity of Maffei2. Higher resolution data are required to check whether this is related to its prominent bar and associated shocks. Upper limits for M82, NGC4388, NGC5728 and Arp220 are also presented. The previously reported detection of 36GHz maser emission in Arp220 is not confirmed. Non-detections are reported from the related class I 44GHz methanol transition towards Maffei2 and IC342, indicating that this line is not stronger than its 36GHz counterpart. In contrast to the previously detected 36GHz CH3OH emission in NGC253 and NGC4945, our 36GHz profiles towards Maffei2 and IC342 are similar to those of previously detected non-masing lines from other molecular species. However, by analogy to our Galactic center region, it may well be possible that the 36GHz methanol lines in Maffei~2 and IC~342 are composed of a large number of faint and narrow maser features that remain spatially unresolved. NGC 4945 is one of the nearest (~3.8 Mpc; 1" ~ 19 pc) starburst galaxies. ALMA band 3 (3--4\,mm) observations of HCN, HCO+, CS, C3H2, SiO, HCO, and CH3C2H were carried out with ~2" resolution. The lines reveal a rotating nuclear disk of projected size 10" x 2" with position angle ~45 deg, inclination ~75 deg and an unresolved bright central core of size <2.5". The continuum source (mostly free-free radiation) is more compact than the nuclear disk by a linear factor of two but shows the same position angle and is centered 0.39" +_ 0.14" northeast of the nuclear accretion disk defined by H2O maser emission. Outside the nuclear disk, both HCN and CS delineate molecular arms on opposite sides of the dynamical center. These are connected by a (deprojected) 0.6 kpc sized molecular bridge, likely a dense gaseous bar seen almost ends-on, shifting gas from the front and back side into the nuclear disk. Modeling this nuclear disk located farther inside <100 pc) with tilted rings indicates a coplanar outflow reaching a characteristic deprojectd velocity of ~50 km/s. All our molecular lines, with the notable exception of CH3C2H, show significant absorption near the systemic velocity (~571 km/s), within a range of ~500-660 km/s. Apparently, only molecular transitions with low critical H2-density do not show absorption. The velocity field of the nuclear disk, derived from CH3C2H, provides evidence for rigid rotation in the inner few arcseconds and a dynamical mass of M = (2.1+_0.2) x 10^8 Mo inside a galactocentric radius of 2.45", with a significantly flattened rotation curve farther out. Aims: To reveal the morphology, chemical composition, kinematics and to establish the main processes prevalent in the gas at the foot points of the giant molecular loops (GMLs) in the Galactic center region Methods: Using the 22-m Mopra telescope, we mapped the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud, placed at the foot points of a giant molecular loop, in 3-mm range molecular lines. To derive the molecular hydrogen column density, we also observed the $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ line at 1 mm using the 12-m APEX telescope. From the 3 mm observations 12 molecular species were detected, namely HCO$^+$, HCN, H$^{13}$CN, HNC, SiO, CS, CH$_3$OH, N$_2$H$^+$, SO, HNCO, OCS, and HC$_3$N. Results: Maps revealing the morphology and kinematics of the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud in different molecules are presented. We identified six main molecular complexes. We derive fractional abundances in 11 selected positions of the different molecules assuming local thermodynamical equilibrium. Conclusions: Most of the fractional abundances derived for the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud are very similar over the whole cloud. However, the fractional abundances of some molecules show significant difference with respect to those measured in the central molecular zone (CMZ). The abundances of the shock tracer SiO are very similar between the GMLs and the CMZ. The methanol emission is the most abundant specie in the GMLs. This indicates that the gas is likely affected by moderate $\sim $ 30 km s$^{-1}$ or even high velocity (50 km s$^{-1}$) shocks, consistent with the line profile observed toward one of the studied position. The origin of the shocks is likely related to the flow of the gas throughout the GMLs towards the foot points., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Context: The bulk of the Molecular gas in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galactic center region shows warm kinetic temperatures, ranging from $>20$ K in the coldest and densest regions (n$\sim 10^{4-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) up to more than 100 K for densities of about n$\sim 10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. Recently, a more diffuse, hotter ($n \sim 100$ cm$^{-3}$, $T\sim 250$ K) gas component was discovered through absorption observations of H$_3^+$. This component may be widespread in the Galactic center, and low density gas detectable in absorption may be present even outside the CMZ along sightlines crossing the extended bulge of the Galaxy. Aims: We aim to observe and characterize diffuse and low density gas using observations of 3-mm molecular transitions seen in absorption. Methods: Using the Atacama Large (sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA) we observed the absorption against the quasar J1744-312, which is located towards the Galactic bulge region at $(l,b)=(-2{^\circ}.13,-1{^\circ}.0)$, but outside the main molecular complexes. Results: ALMA observations in absorption against the J1744-312 quasar reveal a rich and complex chemistry in low density molecular and presumably diffuse clouds. We detected three velocity components, at $\sim $ 0, $-153$, and $-192$ km s$^{-1}$. The component at $\sim 0$ km s$^{-1}$ could represent gas in the Galactic disk while the velocity components at $-153$, and $-192$ km s$^{-1}$ likely originate from the Galactic bulge. Using the IRAM 30-m telescope, CN and CO isotopologues have been measured toward the central regions of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253 and the prototypical ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk231. In NGC253, the 12C/13C ratio is 40+-10. Assuming that the ratio also holds for the CO emitting gas, this yields 16O/18O = 145+-36 and 16O/17O = 1290+-365 and a 32S/34S ratio close to that measured for the local interstellar medium (20-25). No indication for vibrationally excited CN is found. Peak line intensity ratios between NGC253 and Mrk231 are ~100 for 12C16O and 12C18O J=1-0, while the ratio for 13C16O J=1-0 is ~250. This and similar 13CO and C18O line intensities in the J=1-0 and 2-1 transitions of Mrk231 suggest 12C/13C ~ 100 and 16O/18O ~ 100, in agreement with values obtained for the less evolved ultraluminous merger Arp220. Also accounting for other extragalactic data, 12C/13C ratios appear to vary over a full order of magnitude, from >100 in ultraluminous high redshift galaxies to ~100 in more local such galaxies to ~40 in weaker starbursts not undergoing a large scale merger to 25 in the Central Molecular Zone of the Milky Way. With 12C being predominantly synthesized in massive stars, while 13C is mostly ejected by longer lived lower mass stars at later times, this is qualitatively consistent with our results of decreasing carbon isotope ratios with time and rising metallicity. It is emphasized, however, that both infall of poorly processed material, initiating a nuclear starburst, as well as the ejecta from newly formed massive stars (in particular in case of a top-heavy stellar initial mass function) can raise the carbon isotope ratio for a limited amount of time., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics, 6 figures, 4 tables

We used the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) 12 m telescope to observe the J_KaKc=3_03-2_02, 3_22-2_21, and 3_21-2_20 transitions of para-H_2CO at 218 GHz simultaneously to determine kinetic temperatures of the dense gas in the central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy. The map extends over approximately 40 arcmin x 8 arcmin (~100x20 pc^2) along the Galactic plane with a linear resolution of 1.2 pc. The strongest of the three lines, the H_2CO (3_03-2_02) transition, is found to be widespread, and its emission shows a spatial distribution similar to ammonia. The relative abundance of para-H_2CO is 0.5-1.2 10^{-9}, which is consistent with results from lower frequency H_2CO absorption lines. Derived gas kinetic temperatures for individual molecular clouds range from 50 K to values in excess of 100 K. While a systematic trend toward (decreasing) kinetic temperature versus (increasing) angular distance from the Galactic center (GC) is not found, the clouds with highest temperature (T_kin > 100 K) are all located near the nucleus. For the molecular gas outside the dense clouds, the average kinetic temperature is 65+/-10 K. The high temperatures of molecular clouds on large scales in the GC region may be driven by turbulent energy dissipation and/or cosmic-rays instead of photons. Such a non-photon-driven thermal state of the molecular gas provides an excellent template for the more distant vigorous starbursts found in ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs)., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, A&A in press

With the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg, 19 ammonia (NH3) maser lines have been detected toward the prominent massive star forming region W51-IRS2. Eleven of these inversion lines, the (J,K) = (6,2), (5,3), (7,4), (8,5), (7,6), (7,7), (9,7), (10,7), (9,9), (10,9), and (12,12) transitions, are classified as masers for the first time in outer space. All detected masers are related to highly excited inversion doublets. The (5,4) maser originates from an inversion doublet 340 K above the ground state, while the (12,12) transition, at 1450 K, is the most highly excited NH3 maser line so far known. Strong variability is seen not only in ortho- but also in para-NH3 transitions. Bright narrow emission features are observed, for the first time, in (mostly) ortho-ammonia transitions, at V ~ 45 km/s, well separated from the quasi-thermal emission near 60 km/s. These features were absent 25 years ago and show a velocity drift of about +0.2 km/s/yr. The component is likely related to the SiO maser source in W51-IRS2 and a possible scenario explaining the velocity drift is outlined. The 57 km/s component of the (9,6) maser line is found to be strongly linearly polarized. Maser emission in the (J,K) to (J+1,K) inversion doublets is strictly forbidden by selection rules for electric dipole transitions in the ground vibrational state. However, such pairs (and even triplets with (J+2,K)) are common toward W51-IRS2. Similarities in line widths and velocities indicate that such groups of maser lines arise from the same regions, which can be explained by pumping through vibrational excitation. In previous articles, we described how electromagnetic waves emitted from objects in the sky are collected by the ALMA antennas (Anatomy of ALMA), and how they are combined in order to produce images. Before these images can be processed, they are picked up by the antennas and concentrated by the large main mirror and a smaller secondary mirror in the so called focal point of each antenna. In order to process the data they must be first converted to electromagnetic waves of a lower frequency and amplified. This is the role of the ALMA receivers. In principle they work like a normal AM receiver, but at much higher frequencies. Here we describe how they work and what makes them special.

Here we will discuss which calibrations are needed, how to perform them and how the calibration affect ALMA observations. This first part concentrates on aspects related to a single antenna, namely antenna pointing (including the antenna metrology), focusing, and the amplitude calibration, we also mention the bandpass calibration for single measurements.

Context: It is well known that the kinetic temperatures, Tkin, of the molecular clouds in the Galactic center region are higher than in typical disk clouds. However, the Tkin of the molecular complexes found at higher latitudes towards the giant molecular loops in the central region of the Galaxy is so far unknown. The gas of these high latitude molecular clouds (hereafter referred to as halo clouds) is located in a region where the gas in the disk may interact with the gas in the halo in the Galactic center region. Aims: To derive Tkin in the molecular clouds at high latitude and understand the physical process responsible for the heating of the molecular gas both in the Central Molecular Zone (the concentration of molecular gas in the inner 500 pc) and in the giant molecular loops. Methods: We measured the metastable inversion transitions of NH3 from (1,1) to (6,6) toward six positions selected throughout the Galactic central disk and halo. We used rotational diagrams and large velocity gradient modeling to estimate the kinetic temperatures toward all the sources. We also observed other molecules like SiO, HNCO, CS, C34S, C18O, and 13CO, to derive the densities and to trace different physical processes (shocks, photodissociation, dense gas) expected to dominate the heating of the molecular gas. Results: We derive for the first time Tkin of the high latitude clouds interacting with the disk in the Galactic center region. We find high rotational temperatures in all the observed positions. We derive two kinetic temperature components (150 K and 40 K) for the positions in the Central Molecular Zone, and only the warm kinetic temperature component for the clouds toward the giant molecular loops. The fractional abundances derived from the different molecules suggest that shocks provide the main heating mechanism throughout the Galactic center, also at high latitudes, Comment: accepted for publication in A&A 06/09/2012

The central few 100 pc of galaxies often contain large amounts of molecular gas. The chemical and physical properties of these extragalactic star formation regions differ from those in galactic disks, but are poorly constrained. This study aims to develop a better knowledge of the spatial distribution and kinetic temperature of the dense neutral gas associated with the nuclear regions of three prototypical spiral galaxies, NGC253, IC342, and Maffei2. VLA CnD and D configuration measurements have been made of three ammonia (NH3) inversion transitions. The (J,K)=(1,1) and (2,2) transitions of NH3 were imaged toward IC342 and Maffei2. The (3,3) transition was imaged toward NGC253. The entire flux obtained from single-antenna measurements is recovered for all three galaxies observed. Derived lower limits to the kinetic temperatures determined for the giant molecular clouds in the centers of these galaxies are between 25 and 50K. There is good agreement between the distributions of NH3 and other H2 tracers, such as rare CO isotopologues or HCN, suggesting that NH3 is representative of the distribution of dense gas. Ams: We study the 12C/13C isotopic ratio in the disk of the central molecular zone and in the halo to trace gas accretion toward the Galactic center region in the Milky Way. Methods: Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we observe the J=1-0 rotational transition of HCO+, HCN, HNC and their 13C isotopic substitutions in order to measure the 12C/13C isotopic ratio. We observe 9 positions selected throughout the Galactic center region, including clouds at high latitude; locations where the X1 and X2 orbits associated with the barred potential are expected to intersect; and typical Galactic center molecular clouds. Results: We find a systematically higher 12C/13C isotopic ratio (>40) toward the halo and the X1 orbits than for the Galactic center molecular clouds (20-25). Our results point out to molecular gas which has undergone a different degree of nuclear processing than that observed in the gas towards the inner Galactic center region. To derive carbon isotopic ratios from optically thin tracers in the central regions of the starburst galaxies M82 and NGC253. We present high sensitivity observations of CCH and two of its 13C isotopologues, C13CH and 13CCH, as well as the optically thin emission from C18O and 13C18O. We assume the column density ratio between isotopologues is representative of the 12C13C isotopic ratio. From CCH, lower limits to the 12C/13C isotopic ratio of 138 in M82, and 81 in NGC253, are derived. Lower limits to the 12C/13C ratios from CO isotopologues support these. 13C18O is tentatively detected in NGC253, which is the first reported detection in the extragalactic ISM. Based on these limits, we infer ratios of 16O/18O>350 and >300 in M82 and NGC253, respectively, and 32S/34S>16 in NGC253. and the H2 column density determination through the optically thin tracers 13CO and C18O. The derived CCH fractional abundances toward these galaxies of <~1.1\times10^-8 are in good agreement with those of molecular clouds in the Galactic disk. Our lower limits to the 12C/13C ratio from CCH are a factor of 2-3 larger than previous limits. The results are discussed in the context of molecular and nucleo-chemical evolution. The large 12C/13C isotopic ratio of the molecular ISM in these starburst galaxies suggest that the gas has been recently accreted toward their nuclear regions., Comment: 5 Pages, 1 Figure. We study the disk-halo interaction, in the context of orbits and Giant Molecular loops (GMLs) in the Galactic center (GC) region. The chemistry in the central regions of galaxies is expected to be strongly influenced by their nuclear activity. To find the best tracers of nuclear activity is of key importance to understand the processes taking place in the most obscured regions of galactic nuclei. In this work we present multi-line observations of CS, C34S, HNCO and C18O in a sample of 11 bright galaxies prototypical for different types of activity. The 32S/34S isotopic ratio is ~10, supporting the idea of an isotopical 34S enrichment due to massive star formation in the nuclear regions of galaxies. Although C32S and C34S do not seem to be significantly affected by the activity type, the HNCO abundance appears highly contrasted among starburst. We observed HNCO abundance variations of nearly two orders of magnitude. The HNCO molecule is shown to be a good tracer of the amount of molecular material fueling the starburst and therefore can be used as a diagnostics of the evolutionary state of a nuclear starburst., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, Accepted by ApJ

We present a systematic study of the HNCO, C18O, 13CS, and C34S emission towards 13 selected molecular clouds in the Galactic center region. The molecular emission in these positions are used as templates of the different physical and chemical processes claimed to be dominant in the circumnuclear molecular gas of galaxies. The relative abundance of HNCO shows a variation of more than a factor of 20 amo ng the observed sources. The HNCO/13CS abundance ratio is highly contrasted (up to a factor of 30) between the shielded molecular clouds mostly affected by shocks, where HNCO is released to gas-phase from grain mantles, and those pervaded by an intense UV radiation field, where HNCO is photo-dissociated and CS production favored via ion reactions. We propose the relative HNCO to CS abundance ratio as a highly contrasted diagnostic tool to distinguish between the influence of shocks and/or the radiation field in the nuclear regions of galaxies and their relation to the evolutionary state of their nuclear star formation bursts., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of propylene (also called propene, CH_2CHCH_3) with the IRAM 30-m radio telescope toward the dark cloud TMC-1. Propylene is the most saturated hydrocarbon ever detected in space through radio astronomical techniques. In spite of its weak dipole moment, 6 doublets (A and E species) plus another line from the A species have been observed with main beam temperatures above 20 mK. The derived total column density of propylene is 4 10^13 cm^-2, which corresponds to an abundance relative to H_2 of 4 10^-9, i.e., comparable to that of other well known and abundant hydrocarbons in this cloud, such as c-C_3H_2. Although this isomer of C_3H_6 could play an important role in interstellar chemistry, it has been ignored by previous chemical models of dark clouds as there seems to be no obvious formation pathway in gas phase. The discovery of this species in a dark cloud indicates that a thorough analysis of the completeness of gas phase chemistry has to be done., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Using the 15-m Swedish ESO Sub-millimeter Telescope (SEST), CO, HCN, and HCO+ observations of the galactic star-forming region NGC6334 FIR II are presented, complemented by [C I] 3^P_1--3^P_0 and 3^P_2--3^P_1 data from the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX 12-m telescope). Embedded in the extended molecular cloud and associated with the H II region NGC6334--D, there is a molecular "void". [C I] correlates well with 13^CO and other molecular lines and shows no rim brightening relative to molecular cloud regions farther off the void. While an interpretation in terms of a highly clumped cloud morphology is possible, with photon dominated regions (PDRs) reaching deep into the cloud, the data do not provide any direct evidence for a close association of [C I] with PDRs. Kinetic temperatures are ~40--50K in the molecular cloud and >=200K toward the void. CO and [C I] excitation temperatures are similar. A comparison of molecular and atomic fine structure line emission with the far infrared and radio continuum as well as the distribution of 2.2um H_2 emission indicates that the well-evolved H II region expands into a medium that is homogeneous on pc-scales. If the H_2 emission is predominantly shock excited, both the expanding ionization front (classified as subsonic, "D-type") and the associated shock front farther out (traced by H_2) can be identified, observationally confirming for the first time a classical scenario that is predicted by evolutionary models of H II regions. Integrated line intensity ratios of the observed molecules are determined, implying a mean C18^O/C17^O abundance ratio of 4.13+-0.13 that reflects the 18^O/17^O isotope ratio. This ratio is consistent with values determined in nearby clouds. To study the properties of the interstellar medium in the prototypical merging system of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039), we have obtained CO(1-0), (2-1) and (3-2) line maps, as well as a map of the 870 micron continuum emission. Our results are analysed in conjunction with data from X-ray to radio wavelengths. In order to distinguish between exact coincidence and merely close correspondence of emission features, we compare the morphological structure of the different emission components at the highest available angular resolution. To constrain the physical state of the molecular gas, we apply models of photon dominated regions (PDRs) that allow us to fit CO and [CII] data, as well as other indicators of widespread PDRs in the Antennae system, particularly within the super giant molecular cloud (SGMC) complexes of the interaction region (IAR) between the two galaxies. The modeled clouds have cores with moderately high gas densities up to 4 10^4 / cm^3 and rather low kinetic temperatures <=25K). At present, all these clouds, including those near the galactic nuclei, show no signs of intense starburst activity. Thermal radio or mid-infrared emission are all observed to peak slightly offset from the molecular peaks. The total molecular gas mass of the Antennae system adds up to \~10^10 M_sun. In the vicinity of each galactic nucleus, the moleculargas mass, 1-2 10^9 M_sun, exceeds that of the Galactic centre region by a factorof almost 100. Furthermore, the gas does not seem to deviate much from the N_{H_2}/I_CO ratio typical of the disk of our Galaxy rather than our Galactic centre., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

We present high sensitivity observations of the complex organic molecules (COMs) CH3OH, C2H5OH, HCOOCH3, HCOOH and H2CO and of SiO toward the quiescent dark cloud L183 and the molecular outflow L1448-mm. We have not detected C2H5OH, HCOOCH3 and SiO in L183 and in the quiescent gas of L1448-mm. The abundances of CH3OH, H2CO and SiO are enhanced by factors 4-20 in the shock precursor component, and those of CH3OH and SiO by 3 and 4 orders of magnitude in the shocked gas, without substantial changes (< factor of 2) in the abundances of C2H5OH and HCOOCH3 relative to that of CH3OH. The large enhancements of SiO and CH3OH can be explained by the shock ejection of an important fraction of the grain mantle material into gas phase. Our upper limits to the C2H5OH/CH3OH and HCOOCH3/CH3OH ratios are consistent with the rather constant ratios measured in hot cores and Galactic center clouds. However, the upper limits to the HCOOCH3/CH3OH and the HCOOH/CH3OH ratios are at least one order of magnitude smaller than those found in"hot corinos" surrounding low mass protostars. We speculate that the observed abundances of COMs in different objects are consistent with a sort of "universal" grain mantle composition which is locally changed by the processes of low mass star formation., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. We present a multilevel study of the emission of methanol, detected for the first time in this galaxy, and discuss the origin of its emission. The high observed methanol abundance of a few 10^-9 can only be explained if injection of methanol from dust grains is taken into account. While the overall [CH3OH]/[NH3] ratio is much larger than observed towards other starbursts, the dense high excitation component shows a similar value to that found in NGC 253 and Maffei 2. Our observations suggest the molecular material in M 82 to be formed by dense warm cores, shielded from the UV radiation and similar to the molecular clouds in other starbursts, surrounded by a less dense photodissociated halo. The dense warm cores are likely the location of recent and future star formation within M 82., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present the first unbiased molecular line survey towards an extragalactic source, namely the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The scan covers the frequency band from 129.1 to 175.2 GHz, i.e. most of the 2mm atmospheric window. We identify 111 spectral features as transitions from 25 different molecular species. Eight of which (three tentatively) are detected for the first time in the extragalactic interstellar medium. Among these newly detected species, we detected the rare isotopomers 34SO and HC18O+. Tentative detections of two deuterated species, DNC and N2D+, are reported for the first time from a target beyond the Magellanic Clouds. Additionally, three hydrogen recombination lines are identified, while no organic molecules larger than methanol are detected. Column densities and rotation temperatures are calculated for all the species, including an upper limit to the ethanol abundance. A comparison of the chemical composition of the nuclear environment of NGC 253 with those of selected nearby galaxies demonstrates the chemical resemblance of IC 342 and NGC 4945 to that of NGC 253. On the other hand, the chemistries characterizing NGC 253 and M 82 are clearly different. We also present a comparison of the chemical composition of NGC 253 with those observed in Galactic prototypical sources. The chemistry of NGC 253 shows a striking similarity with the chemistry observed toward the Galactic center molecular clouds, which are thought to be dominated by low-velocity shocks. This resemblance strongly suggests that the heating in the nuclear environment of NGC 253 is dominated by the same mechanism as that in the central region of the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

We present observations of the singly and doubly deuterated species of thioformaldehyde, HDCS and D$_2$CS, towards the dark cloud Barnard 1. This is the first detection of D$_2$CS in Space and in dense and cold prestellar regions. Column densities obtained using rotational diagrams and a Large Velocity Gradient model show an extremely high D-enhancement in thioformaldehyde in Barnard 1. Although the column density of H$_2$CS is smaller than that of H$_2$CO, both species show similar D-enhancements in their singly and doubly deuterated species. A chemical model -including multiply deuterated species- has been used in order to interpret the observations. Predicted rotational frequencies from laboratory data for HDCS and D$_2$CS are significantly in error when compared to the observed frequencies in Space. Consequently, we have derived new rotational constants for these two species and for H$_2$CS and H$_2$C$^{34}$S using the observed frequencies in Barnard 1. The new rotational constants allow to predict the rotational transitions of these species with the accuracy needed for the narrow line emerging from dark clouds. Based on observations of the most abundant sulfur-bearing molecules (H2S, CS, NS, SO, H2CS, OCS, and SO2) carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope and SEST, we present the first analysis of the sulfur chemistry of an extragalactic source, the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. This is the first time that H2S and, tentatively, H2CS are detected towards the nucleus of a starburst galaxy. Source averaged fractional abundances of these molecules are a few 10^-9, except for CS and OCS which are more abundant (10^-8). Sulfur isotopic ratios, 32S/34S~8+-2 and 34S/33S>9, are measured through observations of 13CS, C34S, and C33S. A comparison with the observed relative abundances towards different prototypical Galactic sources suggests that the chemical composition of NGC 253 is similar to that found towards the molecular clouds complexes like Sgr B2 in the nuclear region of the Milky Way. The large overabundance of OCS compared to the predictions of time-dependent sulfur chemistry models supports the idea that OCS is likely injected into the gas phase from the grain mantles by low velocity shocks., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 19 pages, 3 figures

The J=2-1 and 3-2 rotational lines of the rare isotopomer C36S and the J=5-4 and 6-5 transitions of Si36S were detected in the carbon star IRC+10216 (CW Leo). These are the first detections of 36S bearing molecules in a star and the first spectroscopic detection of Si36S. From a comparison of 34S and 36S bearing isotopomers, th 34S/36S isotopic ratio is 107(+-15). This value is comparable to values in the interstellar medium of the inner Galactic disk (115) but is smaller than the solar value of 288 (Ding et al. 2001). The increase of the 36S abundance relative to 34S only qualitatively follows model predictions of a low mass AGB star. Quantitative agreement of the observed 34S/36S ratio with the stellar models can be reached if the age of IRC+10216 and Galactic chemical evolution are taken into account. Other less likely possibilities are the presence of considerable inhomogeneities in the interstellar medium and either IRC+10216 or the Sun started with a peculiar 36S abundance. Other production mechanisms potentially capable of enhancing the Galactic interstellar medium are discussed. From the observed line density toward IRC+10216 and toward Galactic star forming regions, we estimate the confusion limit toward those sources.

A multi-line millimeter-wave study of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4945 has been carried out using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST). The study covers the frequency range from 82 GHz to 354 GHz and includes 80 transitions of 19 molecules. 1.3 mm continuum data of the nuclear source are also presented. A large number of molecular species indicate the presence of a prominent high density interstellar gas component characterized by $n_{\rm H_2}\sim10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. Abundances of molecular species are calculated and compared with abundances observed toward the starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M 82 and galactic sources. Apparent is an `overabundance' of HNC in the nuclear environment of NGC 4945. While the HNC/HCN $J$=1--0 line intensity ratio is $\sim$0.5, the HNC/HCN abundance ratio is $\sim$1. While HCN is subthermally excited ($T_{\rm ex}\sim$8 K), CN is even less excited ($T_{\rm ex}\sim$3--4 K), indicating that it arises from a less dense gas component and that its $N$=2--1 line can be optically thin even though its $N$=1--0 emission is moderately optically thick. Overall, fractional abundances of NGC 4945 suggest that the starburst has reached a stage of evolution that is intermediate between those observed in NGC 253 and M 82. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope ratios are also determined. Within the limits of uncertainty, carbon and oxygen isotope ratios appear to be the same in the nuclear regions of NGC 4945 and NGC 253. High $^{18}$O/$^{17}$O, low $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O and $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N and perhaps also low $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S ratios appear to be characteristic properties of a starburst environment in which massive stars have had sufficient time to affect the isotopic composition of the surrounding interstellar medium., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, accepted bt A&A

We report the first detections of SO_2, NS and NO in an extragalactic source, the nucleus of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Five SO_2 transitions, three groups of hyperfine components of NO and five of NS were detected. All three species show large abundances averaged over the inner 200 pc of NGC 253. With a relative abundance of a few 10^-7, the emission of the NO molecule is similar or even larger than that found in Galactic star forming regions. The derived relative molecular abundances for each molecule have been compared with those of prototypical Galactic molecular clouds. These results seem to confirm that large scale shocks dominate the chemistry of these molecules in the nucleus of NGC 253, ruling out a chemistry dominated by PDRs for the bulk of the gas., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 4 pages, 6 figures

The detection of NH3 inversion lines up to the (J,K)=(6,6) level is reported toward the central regions of the nearby galaxies NGC253, Maffei2, and IC342. The observed lines are up to 406K (for (J,K)=(6,6)) and 848K (for the (9,9) transition) above the ground state and reveal a warm (T_kin= 100 - 140 K) molecular component toward all galaxies studied. The tentatively detected (J,K)=(9,9) line is evidence for an even warmer (>400K) component toward IC342. Toward NGC253, IC342 and Maffei2 the global beam averaged NH3 abundances are 1-2 10^-8, while the abundance relative to warm H2 is around 10^-7. The temperatures and NH3 abundances are similar to values found for the Galactic central region. C-shocks produced in cloud-cloud collisions can explain kinetic temperatures and chemical abundances. In the central region of M82, however, the NH3 emitting gas component is comparatively cool (~ 30K). It must be dense (to provide sufficient NH3 excitation) and well shielded from dissociating photons and comprises only a small fraction of the molecular gas mass in M82. An important molecular component, which is warm and tenuous and characterized by a low ammonia abundance, can be seen mainly in CO. The (J,K) = (1,1), (2,2), (3,3), and (4,4) inversion lines of ammonia (NH3) have been detected toward the nuclear 40'' sized bar of the nearby spiral galaxy Maffei 2. The relative intensities of the ammonia lines are characterized by a rotational temperature of 85 K. This is higher than rotational temperatures measured toward IC342 and most Galactic Center clouds, implying kinetic temperatures of at least 100 K. Since the kinetic temperature of the gas is larger than that of the dust, NH3 is tracing a particularly dense warm gas component that is heated by young massive stars, cloud-cloud collisions, or ion-slip heating in the nuclear starburst. The gas north of the nucleus (V(LSR} = -80 km/s) is more highly excited than the gas further south (+6 km/s). 12CO 1-0,2-1,4-3,7-6, and 13CO 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 line was mapped with angular resolutions of 13" - 22" toward the nuclear region of starburst galaxy M82. The difference of lobe spacings in submillimeter (~15") and millimeter (~26") lines indicates the presence of a `low' and a `high' CO excitation component. An LVG excitation analysis of the submillimeter lines leads to inconsistencies, since area and volume filling factors are almost the same, resulting in cloud sizes along the lines-of-sight that match the entire size of the M82 starburst region. Nevertheless, LVG column densities agree with estimates derived from the dust emission in the far infrared and at submillimeter wavelengths. Accounting for high UV fluxes and variations in kinetic temperature and assuming that the observed emission arises from photon dominated regions (PDRs) resolves the problems related to an LVG treatment of the radiative transfer. 12CO/13CO line intensity ratios > 10 indicate that the bulk of the CO emission arises in UV-illuminated diffuse cloud fragments of small column density and sub-parsec cloud sizes with area filling factors >> 1. Thus CO arises from quite a different gas component than the classical high density tracers. The dominance of such a diffuse molecular interclump medium also explains observed high [CI}/CO line intensity ratios. PDR models do not allow a determination of the relative abundances of 12CO to 13CO. Ignoring magnetic fields, the CO gas appears to be close to the density limit for tidal disruption. A warm diffuse ISM not only dominates the CO emission in the starburst region of M82 but is also ubiquitous in the central region of our Galaxy, where tidal stress, cloud-cloud collisions, shocks, high gas pressure, and high stellar densities may all contribute to the formation of a highly fragmented molecular debris., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publiation in A&A

Multiline observations of C18O and SiO isotopomers toward 33 molecular peaks in the Galactic center region, taken at the SEST, JCMT and HHT telescopes, are presented. The C18O presumably traces the total H_2 column density, while the SiO traces gas affected by shocks and high temperature chemistry. The J =2-1 line of SiO is seen only in few regions of the Galactic disk. This line is easily detected in all Galactic center sources observed. A comparison of the strength of the rare isotopomers 29SiO and 30SiO to the strength of the main isotopomer 28SiO implies that the J = 2-1 transition of 28SiO is optically thick. The 29Si/30Si isotope ratio of 1.6 in the Galactic center clouds is consistent with the terrestrial value. Large Velocity Gradient models show that the dense component (n_(H_2) > 10^4cm-3) in typical molecular cores in the Galactic center is cool (TKIN ~ 25K), contrary to what is usually found in Giant Molecular Clouds in the disk, where the densest cores are the hottest. High kinetic temperatures, > 100K, known to exist from NH_3 studies, are only present at lower gas densities of a few 10^3cm-3, where SiO is highly subthermal. Assuming that C18O traces all of the molecular gas, it is found that in all cases but one, SiO emission is compatible with arising in gas at higher density that is (presently) relatively cool. The relative abundance of SiO is typically 10^-9, but differs significantly between individual sources. It shows a dependence on the position of the source within the Galactic center region. High abundances are found in those regions for which bar potential models predict a high likelihood for cloud-cloud collisions. The large scale structure and physics of molecular gas in the Galactic center region is discussed based on the analysis of a 9' resolution survey of the Galactic center region in the J=1->0 line of C^18O. Emphasis is placed on the comparison with ^12CO(1--0) data. The line shapes of C^18O(1--0) and ^12CO(1--0) differ significantly. The ratio of the intensities of the two isotopomers in the Galactic center region is generally higher than the value of ~15 expected from the ``Standard Conversion Factor'' (SCF) of ^12CO integrated line intensity to H_2 column density. In our data, this ratio is in the range from 30 to 200, mostly ~60 to 80. From LVG calculations, we estimate that the large scale ^12CO(1--0) emission in the Galactic center region is of moderate or low optical depth. Higher optical depths are restricted to very limited regions. We estimate H_2 densities and kinetic temperatures for different ranges of intensity ratios. A considerable amount of molecular mass is in a widespread molecular gas component with low densities and high kinetic temperatures. The total molecular mass is found to be (3^+2_-1) 10^7 M_{sun}. We show that the SCF is not valid toward the Galactic bulge. It overestimates the H_2 column density by an order of magnitude because the assumptions required for this factor are not fulfilled for a significant fraction of the molecular gas. Therefore, also one cannot apply a modified conversion factor to the Galactic center region since the N(H_2)/I(^12CO) ratio is highly variable and cannot be represented by a universal constant. $^{12}$C$/^{13}$C line intensity ratios have been derived from several carbon-bearing molecules to confine the range of carbon and oxygen isotope abundance ratios toward the nuclear regions of two infrared bright galaxies. The most stringent limits are obtained from CN mm-wave emission lines. Supplementary measurements toward the Galactic center region indicate that overall I(12CN)/I(13CN) line intensity ratios are giving lower limits to the corresponding 12C/13C abundance ratio. Toward M 82 and IC 342, we find 12C/13C > 40 and >30. Therefore the smaller 12C/13C ratio of our own Galactic center region (25) may not be typical for central regions of galaxies which are more luminous in the infrared. The 12C/13C limits and data from various isotopic species of CO also infer 16O/18O abundance ratios of > 90 and > 125 for M 82 and IC 342, respectively. Multilevel observations of formaldehyde (H_2CO) and methanol (CH_3OH) toward the nearby spiral galaxies NGC 253, Maffei 2, IC 342, M 82 and NGC 6946 are presented. H_2CO was detected in all galaxies (tentatively in NGC 6946). CH_3OH was detected in all objects with the notable exception of M 82. H_2CO line intensity ratios point out differences in gas density both between galaxies and within the central regions of individual objects. Model calculations show that the bulk of the gas emitting H_2CO in NGC 253 is at a density of ~10^4 cm^-3 , while the H_2CO lines in M 82 and IC 342 trace two different, spatially separated gas components with densities of <= 10^4 cm^-3 and ~10^6 cm^-3. The south-western molecular hotspot in M 82 and the center of IC 342 are the regions with the highest density. Methanol is subthermally excited in all galaxies, with the lowest excitation temperatures found in IC 342. The CH_3OH abundance in NGC 253 and the non-starburst nuclei of IC 342 and Maffei 2 are comparable. A map of the 3_k-2_k lines in NGC 253 shows that CH_3OH traces clumpy structures better than other molecules requiring high gas density to be excited. CH_3OH toward M 82 is at least an order of magnitude less abundant than in otherwise comparable galaxies. The first detection of a $^{36}$S-bearing molecule in interstellar space is reported. The $J$=$2-1$ and $3-2$ transitions of C$^{36}$S have been observed toward eight Galactic molecular hot cores. From a comparison with other optically thin isotopic species of CS, the abundance ratio of $^{34}$S/$^{36}$S is 115$(\pm 17)$. The first definite discoveries of extragalactic deuterium are reported. DCO$^+$ has been detected in three and DCN has been measured in one star-forming region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). While the HCO$^+$/DCO$^+$ abundance ratios are found to be 19 $\pm$ 3, 24 $\pm$ 4, and 67 $\pm$ 18 for N113, N44BC and N159HW, respectively, a HCN/DCN abundance ratio of 23 $\pm$ 5 is obtained for N113. These results are consistent with a gas temperature of about 20\,K and a D/H ratio of about $1.5 \times 10^{-5}$, consistent with that observed in the Galaxy. If the cloud temperature is closer to 30\,K, then a D/H ratio is required to be up to an order of magnitude larger.
