Abstract Background Aquaculture and salmon farming can cause environmental problems due to the pollution of the surrounding waters with nutrients, solid wastes and chemicals, such as antibiotics, which are used for disease control in the aquaculture facilities. Increasing antibiotic resistance in human-impacted environments, such as coastal waters with aquaculture activity, is linked to the widespread use of antibiotics, even at sub-lethal concentrations. In Chile, the world's second largest producer of salmon, aquaculture is considered the primary source of antibiotics residues in the coastal waters of northern Patagonia. Here, we evaluated whether the structure and diversity of marine bacterial community, the richness of antibiotic resistance bacteria and the frequency of antibiotic resistance genes increase in communities from the surface seawater of an area with salmon farming activities, in comparison with communities from an area without major anthropogenic disturbance. Results The taxonomic structure of bacterial community was significantly different between areas with and without aquaculture production. Growth of the culturable fraction under controlled laboratory conditions showed that, in comparison with the undisturbed area, the bacterial community from salmon farms displayed a higher frequency of colonies resistant to the antibiotics used by the salmon industry. A higher adaptation to antibiotics was revealed by a greater proportion of multi-resistant bacteria isolated from the surface seawater of the salmon farming area. Furthermore, metagenomics data revealed a significant higher abundance of antibiotic resistant genes conferring resistance to 11 antibiotic families in the community from salmon farms, indicating that the proportion of bacteria carrying the resistance determinants was overall higher in salmon farms than in the undisturbed site. Conclusions Our results revealed an association between bacterial communities and antibiotic resistance from surface seawater of a coastal area of Chile. Although the total bacterial community may appear comparable between sites, the cultivation technique allowed to expose a higher prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the salmon farming area. Moreover, we demonstrated that metagenomics (culture-independent) and phenotypic (culture-dependent) methods are complementary to evaluate the bacterial communities’ risk for antibiotic resistance, and that a human—influenced environment (such as salmon farms) can potentiate bacteria to adapt to environmental stresses, such as antibiotics.

Abstract Background To unravel the evolutionary history of a complex group, a comprehensive reconstruction of its phylogenetic relationships is crucial. This requires meticulous taxon sampling and careful consideration of multiple characters to ensure a complete and accurate reconstruction. The phylogenetic position of the Orestias genus has been estimated partly on unavailable or incomplete information. As a consequence, it was assigned to the family Cyprindontidae, relating this Andean fish to other geographically distant genera distributed in the Mediterranean, Middle East and North and Central America. In this study, using complete genome sequencing, we aim to clarify the phylogenetic position of Orestias within the Cyprinodontiformes order. Results We sequenced the genome of three Orestias species from the Andean Altiplano. Our analysis revealed that the small genome size in this genus (~ 0.7 Gb) was caused by a contraction in transposable element (TE) content, particularly in DNA elements and short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs). Using predicted gene sequences, we generated a phylogenetic tree of Cyprinodontiformes using 902 orthologs extracted from all 32 available genomes as well as three outgroup species. We complemented this analysis with a phylogenetic reconstruction and time calibration considering 12 molecular markers (eight nuclear and four mitochondrial genes) and a stratified taxon sampling to consider 198 species of nearly all families and genera of this order. Overall, our results show that phylogenetic closeness is directly related to geographical distance. Importantly, we found that Orestias is not part of the Cyprinodontidae family, and that it is more closely related to the South American fish fauna, being the Fluviphylacidae the closest sister group. Conclusions The evolutionary history of the Orestias genus is linked to the South American ichthyofauna and it should no longer be considered a member of the Cyprinodontidae family. Instead, we submit that Orestias belongs to the Orestiidae family, as suggested by Freyhof et al. (2017), and that it is the sister group of the Fluviphylacidae family, distributed in the Amazonian and Orinoco basins. These two groups likely diverged during the Late Eocene concomitant with hydrogeological changes in the South American landscape.

ABSTRACT Soil microorganisms mediate several biological processes through the secretion of natural products synthesized in specialized metabolic pathways, yet functional characterization in ecological contexts remains challenging. Using culture-independent metagenomic analyses of microbial DNA derived directly from soil samples, we examined the potential of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) from six bacterial communities distributed along an altitudinal gradient of the Andes Mountains in the Atacama Desert. We mined 38 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and identified 168 BGCs. Results indicated that most predicted BGCs were classified as non-ribosomal-peptides (NRP), post-translational modified peptides (RiPP), and terpenes, which were mainly identified in genomes of species from Acidobacteriota and Proteobacteria phyla. Based on BGC composition according to types of core biosynthetic genes, six clusters of MAGs were observed, three of them with predominance for a single phylum, of which two also showed specificity to a single sampling site. Comparative analyses of accessory genes in BGCs showed associations between membrane transporters and other protein domains involved in specialized metabolism with classes of biosynthetic cores, such as resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) multidrug efflux pumps with RiPPs and the iron-dependent transporter TonB with terpenes. Our findings increase knowledge regarding the biosynthetic potential of uncultured bacteria inhabiting pristine locations from one of the oldest and driest nonpolar deserts on Earth.IMPORTANCEMuch of what we know about specialized metabolites in the Atacama Desert, including Andean ecosystems, comes from isolated microorganisms intended for drug development and natural product discovery. To complement research on the metabolic potential of microbes in extreme environments, comparative analyses on functional annotations of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) from uncultivated bacterial genomes were carried out. Results indicated that in general, BGCs encode for structurally unique metabolites and that metagenome-assembled genomes did not show an obvious relationship between the composition of their core biosynthetic potential and taxonomy or geographic distribution. Nevertheless, some members of Acidobacteriota showed a phylogenetic relationship with specific metabolic traits and a few members of Proteobacteria and Desulfobacterota exhibited niche adaptations. Our results emphasize that studying specialized metabolism in environmental samples may significantly contribute to the elucidation of structures, activities, and ecological roles of microbial molecules.

The investigation introduces innovative digital tools and editable resources, opening new avenues for the study and preservation of the P'urhépecha language, ensuring its relevance and accessibility for future generations.The Gilberti Project has been active for over two decades, dedicating itself to the analysis of P'urhépecha texts. Beyond its academic role, the project significantly contributes to the conservation and promotion of the p'urhépecha language in several indigenous communities in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, where the language is still alive.

Background:. Facial nerve palsy is a multifaceted pathology that causes facial disfigurement, affecting eye closure, speech articulation, oral competence, and emotional expression, with functional, aesthetic, and psychological consequences. Standardized electrophysiological tests, such as electroneurography and electromyography, allow an objective evaluation of the functional state of the nerve. Here, we aimed to compare and correlate clinical findings with electromyography in patients with facial nerve palsy, before and after facial nerve reanimation with cross-facial nerve grafts. Methods:. Eight patients with traumatic or nontraumatic facial paralysis with complete clinical records who underwent surgical reanimation of facial nerve with cross nerve grafts. Results:. The median time from diagnosis to treatment was 173 days (interquartile range = 222). Outcomes were evaluated using standard clinical scales (House-Brackmann, Sunnybrook, and eFACE) and electromyography. The median time for postoperative outcome evaluation was 768 days (interquartile range = 1053). A statistically significant difference was found between pre- and postoperative outcomes according to eFACE (Δ median = 13, P = 0.003), House-Brackmann (Δ median = −2, P = 0.008), and electromyography (Δ mean = 855, P = 0.005). A positive correlation between electromyography and clinical evaluation with eFACE was observed (r = 0.751, 95% confidence interval = 0.174–0.944, P = 0.019). Conclusions:. Our results suggest that cross nerve grafts are associated with clinical and electromyographic improvement of the paralyzed face. Electromyography and eFACE scores validate the reliability of eFACE scale for measuring postoperative outcomes. We suggest postoperative electromyography as an objective measure of postoperative evaluation in patients with a delay in improvement at 6–9 months.

In Mexico, corn and the nixtamalization technique hold immense culinary and economic significance. Thus, optimizing and offering alternatives for this process is critical. This research proposes a solar-driven nixtamalization method customized for native maize varieties in Michoacán, Mexico. The objective is to present a technique that is energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, socially acceptable, and cost-effective. We devised a straightforward yet effective nixtamalization process utilizing the HSMC solar furnace. This method encompasses: • Field research to understand the practices and traditions regarding nixtamalization and the most consumed maize varieties. • Thermal determination and profiling of the solar oven to be used for each case study.For the rural areas of Michoacán, solar nixtamalization presents a practical and eco-sustainable alternative in both energy usage and economic terms. However, those interested in its local application must consider that the duration may vary due to differing climatic conditions and maize types.

Introducción. El cáncer de cuello uterino es un problema de salud pública relevante en países de ingresos medios y bajos. El seguimiento de mujeres con tamización positiva y el acceso a tratamiento para neoplasia intraepitelial cervical (NIC) son retos mayores en estos países. Objetivo. Evaluar la efectividad de la crioterapia suministrada por enfermeras en casos de neoplasia intraepitelial de cérvix. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo la inspección visual directa con ácido acético y solución yodada (VIA-VILI), y se practicó colposcopia con biopsia, a mujeres entre los 25 y los 59 años, residentes en zonas de bajos ingresos de Bogotá. Profesionales de enfermería entrenados ofrecieron tratamiento inmediato con crioterapia a mujeres positivas en la inspección visual. Se les practicó colposcopia con biopsia antes del tratamiento y en un control a los 12 meses. Se evaluó la efectividad mediante tasas de curación (resultado: sin lesión) y regresión de NIC2/3 (resultado: ≤NIC1), por verificación colposcópica e histológica. Resultados. Se tamizaron 4.957 mujeres. En total, 499 fueron positivas y 472 aceptaron el tratamiento inmediato. Recibieron crioterapia por enfermería 365 mujeres (11 NIC2/3). La tasa de curación fue del 72 % (IC95%: 39-94 %) por verificación colposcópica, y del 40 % (IC95%: 22-85 %) por histología. Las tasas de regresión fueron del 100 y el 60 %, respectivamente. Se reportaron dos eventos adversos no graves relacionados. Conclusiones. Las tasas de curación y regresión por verificación colposcópica son similares a las reportadas con crioterapia administrada por médicos. El tamaño de la muestra con NIC2/3 dificulta la comparación por tipo de verificación. Los hallazgos apoyan la implementación de estrategias de “ver y tratar” por parte de enfermería en poblaciones con acceso limitado a servicios de salud.

This study investigated the sociological dimensions informing public perceptions of water scarcity during the El Niño drought period in Colombia. We conducted this study in Santa Marta, Colombia, and surveyed 405 urban and rural residents to understand their perceptions of water scarcity, management, and the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon. The survey used a Likert scale to measure responses and employed a multivariate analysis of variance to analyze the data while considering factors such as location (urban versus rural) and gender. The study results indicated that urban residents often experience an irregular water supply all year, whereas most rural respondents noted a more consistent availability of water. The perception of water scarcity also differed notably between urban and rural areas due to their different historical and cultural experiences (habitus). Urban respondents mostly recognized the presence of water, while rural perspectives were less conclusive, likely influenced by their direct access to natural water sources. Participants across various demographics consistently reported that poor management by local, regional, and national governments contributes to the water scarcity crisis, highlighting the importance of improving communication about climate events like El Niño and water management to increase community engagement in public policies. Our research suggests that better understanding the social foundations of such perceptions using Bourdieu’s concepts of social fields, habitus, and capital forms can significantly enhance water management strategies.

Follicular helper CD4hi T cells (TFH) are a major cellular pool for the maintenance of the HIV reservoir. Therefore, the delineation of the follicular (F)/germinal center (GC) immune landscape will significantly advance our understanding of HIV pathogenesis. We have applied multiplex confocal imaging, in combination with the relevant computational tools, to investigate F/GC in situ immune dynamics in viremic (vir-HIV), antiretroviral-treated (cART HIV) People Living With HIV (PLWH) and compare them to reactive, non-infected controls. Lymph nodes (LNs) from viremic and cART PLWH could be further grouped based on their TFH cell densities in high-TFH and low-TFH subgroups. These subgroups were also characterized by different in situ distributions of PD1hi TFH cells. Furthermore, a significant accumulation of follicular FOXP3hiCD4hi T cells, which were characterized by a low scattering in situ distribution profile and strongly correlated with the cell density of CD8hi T cells, was found in the cART-HIV low-TFH group. An inverse correlation between plasma viral load and LN GrzBhiCD8hi T and CD16hiCD15lo cells was found. Our data reveal the complex GC immune landscaping in HIV infection and suggest that follicular FOXP3hiCD4hi T cells could be negative regulators of TFH cell prevalence in cART-HIV.

- Introducción: Las patologías pulmonares crónicas representan una alta carga de mortalidad de los adultos mayores. Puntualmente, la fibrosis pulmonar idiopática (FPI) es una enfermedad intersticial crónica, progresiva e irreversible, con una prevalencia que aumenta linealmente con la edad. El envejecimiento inmune se ha caracterizado por un aumento de citoquinas proinflamatorias circulantes que pueden favorecer el remodelamiento patológico y la fibrosis en los tejidos. En este contexto, es posible postular la existencia de una conexión entre el perfil de citoquinas y enfermedades como la FPI. - Objetivos: Identificar citoquinas proinflamatorias en el plasma de pacientes con FPI residentes en la altura de Bogotá. - Metodología: Se tomaron muestras de sangre periférica de pacientes adultos mayores de 60 años con diagnóstico de FPI confirmado por biopsia o por criterios clínicos. Se realizó la separación de plasma y se midieron citoquinas proinflamatorias por CBA. Este trabajo fue aprobado por el comité de ética e investigaciones de la Fundación Neumológica Colombiana. - Resultados: Los pacientes con FPI mostraron un aumento de citocinas como la IL-4, INFy e IL-6 en comparación con adultos mayores sanos. Conclusión: El inflammaging ha sido asociado con el desarrollo y coexistencia de múltiples enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles que tienen mayor incidencia después de los 65 años. Se ha descrito la participación de la inmunidad adaptativa con la patogénesis de la FPI como un desbalance en la respuesta de linfocitos Th1/Th2. Es necesario realizar más estudios que permitan identificar otros marcadores de inmunosenescencia que se correlacionen con la FPI.

Abstract Background Despite representing the largest fraction of animal life, the number of insect species whose genome has been sequenced is barely in the hundreds. The order Dermaptera (the earwigs) suffers from a lack of genomic information despite its unique position as one of the basally derived insect groups and its importance in agroecosystems. As part of a national educational and outreach program in genomics, a plan was formulated to engage the participation of high school students in a genome sequencing project. Students from twelve schools across Chile were instructed to capture earwig specimens in their geographical area, to identify them and to provide material for genome sequencing to be carried out by themselves in their schools. Results The school students collected specimens from two cosmopolitan earwig species: Euborellia annulipes (Fam. Anisolabididae) and Forficula auricularia (Fam. Forficulidae). Genomic DNA was extracted and, with the help of scientific teams that traveled to the schools, was sequenced using nanopore sequencers. The sequence data obtained for both species was assembled and annotated. We obtained genome sizes of 1.18 Gb (F. auricularia) and 0.94 Gb (E. annulipes) with the number of predicted protein coding genes being 31,800 and 40,000, respectively. Our analysis showed that we were able to capture a high percentage (≥ 93%) of conserved proteins indicating genomes that are useful for comparative and functional analysis. We were also able to characterize structural elements such as repetitive sequences and non-coding RNA genes. Finally, functional categories of genes that are overrepresented in each species suggest important differences in the process underlying the formation of germ cells, and modes of reproduction between them, features that are one of the distinguishing biological properties that characterize these two distant families of Dermaptera. Conclusions This work represents an unprecedented instance where the scientific and lay community have come together to collaborate in a genome sequencing project. The versatility and accessibility of nanopore sequencers was key to the success of the initiative. We were able to obtain full genome sequences of two important and widely distributed species of insects which had not been analyzed at this level previously. The data made available by the project should illuminate future studies on the Dermaptera.

Con el objetivo de evaluar el ajuste de un modelo teórico para explicar el Bienestar Mental a partir de la Afectividad Positiva y Negativa, los Síntomas Somáticos y el Dolor Psicológico, participaron voluntariamente 260 estudiantes universitarios/as de Chile, quienes respondieron las Escalas EBMWE, PANAS, SSS-8 y MBPPAS. Se utilizó la técnica estadística multivariada de Análisis de Senderos y los resultados indicaron que el Bienestar Mental es explicado por relaciones directas con el Afecto Positivo, Afecto Negativo y el Dolor Psicológico. Los Síntomas Somáticos tendrían un efecto indirecto a través del Afecto Negativo y del Dolor Psicológico. Se concluye que las variables del modelo explican el 72% de la varianza del Bienestar Mental.

Las siempre crecientes demandas de tráfico de las redes inalámbricas y la saturación de las bandas más bajas del espectro radioeléctrico han llevado a la industria a adoptar el uso de bandas de frecuencia cada vez más altas. Una de esas bandas es la de 60 GHz que ha sido incorporada a los estándares de redes WiFi dentro del grupo 802.11 de IEEE en la pasada década. En este trabajo se presenta el diseño de una antena para uso con técnicas de beamforming en la banda de 60 GHz. Se revisan los estándares de operación en la banda, de los que se obtienen requerimientos y criterios para el diseño. Se realizan simulaciones y comparan con el diseño teórico, realizando ajustes y mejoras al diseño original. Se aplican técnicas para reducción de lóbulos secundarios y se evalúa la antena con técnicas de transmisión multiusuario, con el objetivo de incrementar la eficiencia espectral.

Plastic waste signifies a global predicament, aggravated by deficient management practices. Unearthing methods to repurpose energy from this waste is pivotal. This study delves into the pyrolytic degradation of low-density plastics to convert plastic waste into valuable products on a modest scale. A small-scale, low-CO2 emitting distiller was employed in the process. A zeolite was harnessed as a catalyst to augment the temperature and hasten the pyrolysis process. A comprehensive life cycle analysis was executed to assess the environmental impact of the process. In this scenario, zeolite-facilitated pyrolysis was more proficient compared to traditional thermal pyrolysis, generating a yield of 22.5% with the catalyst, contrasting with 18% without. A kinetic model was formulated, observing reaction mechanisms and temperature escalation and culminating in the extraction of aromatic oils. These oils were further distilled to produce liquid hydrocarbons, beginning the distillation at 60 °C with the catalyst. Characterization of the secured hydrocarbons was conducted using infrared, Raman spectroscopy, and gas chromatography, discovering compounds akin to gasoline, such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes. Additionally, the procedure exhibited a minimal environmental detriment, as validated by the life cycle analysis. This study concludes by highlighting the potential of small-scale, low-CO2 emitting pyrolytic degradation of low-density plastics for energy recovery from plastic waste, demonstrating the practical and environmental benefits of this avant-garde method.

Summary: Background: Colposcopy, currently included in WHO recommendations as an option to triage human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive women, remains as the reference standard to guide both biopsy for confirmation of cervical precancer and cancer and treatment approaches. We aim to evaluate the performance of colposcopy to detect cervical precancer and cancer for triage in HPV-positive women. Methods: This cross-sectional, multicentric screening study was conducted at 12 centres (including primary and secondary care centres, hospitals, laboratories, and universities) in Latin America (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay). Eligible women were aged 30–64 years, sexually active, did not have a history of cervical cancer or treatment for cervical precancer or a hysterectomy, and were not planning to move outside of the study area. Women were screened with HPV DNA testing and cytology. HPV-positive women were referred to colposcopy using a standardised protocol, including biopsy collection of observed lesions, endocervical sampling for transformation zone (TZ) type 3, and treatment as needed. Women with initial normal colposcopy or no high-grade cervical lesions on histology (less than cervical intraepithelial neoplasia [CIN] grade 2) were recalled after 18 months for another HPV test to complete disease ascertainment; HPV-positive women were referred for a second colposcopy with biopsy and treatment as needed. Diagnostic accuracy of colposcopy was assessed by considering a positive test result when the colposcopic impression at the initial colposcopy was positive minor, positive major, or suspected cancer, and was considered negative otherwise. The main study outcome was histologically confirmed CIN3+ (defined as grade 3 or worse) detected at the initial visit or 18-month visit. Findings: Between Dec 12, 2012, and Dec 3, 2021, 42 502 women were recruited, and 5985 (14·1%) tested positive for HPV. 4499 participants with complete disease ascertainment and follow-up were included in the analysis, with a median age of 40·6 years (IQR 34·7–49·9). CIN3+ was detected in 669 (14·9%) of 4499 women at the initial visit or 18-month visit (3530 [78·5%] negative or CIN1, 300 [6·7%] CIN2, 616 [13·7%] CIN3, and 53 [1·2%] cancers). Sensitivity was 91·2% (95% CI 88·9–93·2) for CIN3+, whereas specificity was 50·1% (48·5–51·8) for less than CIN2 and 47·1% (45·5–48·7) for less than CIN3. The objective of this study was to fabricate a solar oven for nixtamalization of maize endemic to Michoacán, Mexico, and then evaluate its performance. Based on the geometry of compound parabolic concentrators. this model oven is innovative in both its design and construction materials. It was designed with dimensions to nixtamalize an amount of maize sufficient to satisfy the needs of a family of four. Results include experimental data for three types of maize: white, yellow, and black. Thermal performance was better than that of other solar devices with similar characteristics. During the cooking process, the oven achieved a standard cooking power of 77.5 W, with no need for reorientation. Cooking times varied for the different kinds of maize studied, but cooking black maize took approximately 3 h under clear skies, indicating that the oven has good efficiency. Future studies will determine nixtamalization times for other endemic varieties of maize in Michoacan.

IntroductionAge is the main risk factor for the development of neurocognitive disorders, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common. Its physiopathological features may develop decades before the onset of clinical symptoms. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) is a promising and cost-effective tool for the prediction of cognitive decline in healthy older individuals that exhibit an excess of theta activity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of brain connectivity variable resolution electromagnetic tomography (BC-VARETA), a novel source localization algorithm, as a potential tool to assess brain connectivity with 19-channel recordings, which are common in clinical practice.MethodsWe explored differences in terms of functional connectivity among the nodes of the default mode network between two groups of healthy older participants, one of which exhibited an EEG marker of risk for cognitive decline.ResultsThe risk group exhibited increased levels of delta, theta, and beta functional connectivity among nodes of the default mode network, as well as reversed directionality patterns of connectivity among nodes in every frequency band when compared to the control group.DiscussionWe propose that an ongoing pathological process may be underway in healthy elderly individuals with excess theta activity in their EEGs, which is further evidenced by changes in their connectivity patterns. BC-VARETA implemented on 19-channels EEG recordings appears to be a promising tool to detect dysfunctions at the connectivity level in clinical settings.

The study of emotional concepts stands at a very interesting intersection between the theoretical debate about the nature of emotions and the debate about the nature of processing concrete concepts and abstract concepts. On the one hand, it is debated whether it is possible to differentiate basic emotions from secondary emotions and, on the other hand, whether emotional concepts differ from abstract concepts. In this regard, the prototypical perceptual aspects are considered an important factor both for the differentiation between concrete and abstract concepts and for the differentiation between basic and secondary emotions (facial expressions). Thus, the objective has been to determine if (a) the presence or absence of a prototypical perceptual referent, and (b) the type of concept (referring to emotion and not referring to emotion), produce differences between concepts of basic emotions, secondary emotions and concepts not related to emotions, concrete and abstract, in the tasks of qualification of concreteness, imageability and availability of context and the task of the list of properties, that have been used in previous studies. A total of 86 university students from the suburbs of La Serena - Coquimbo (Chile), all native Spanish speakers, participated in the study. The results show that in the perception of concreteness and in the total of enumerated properties, emotional concepts presented similar results to abstract concepts not related to emotion and there was no difference between basic and secondary emotion concepts. In imageability and context availability, emotional concepts were perceived as different from and more concrete than abstract concepts. In addition, the cause-effect type attributes allowed to clearly differentiate emotional concepts from those not related to emotion and to differentiate between basic and secondary emotion concepts. These types of attributes appear almost exclusively in emotional concepts and are more frequent in basic emotions. These results are partially consistent with the predictions of Neurocultural and Conceptual Act theories about emotions.

After Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in Costa Rica was confirmed in January 2016, the national surveillance system was enhanced to monitor associated birth defects. To characterize the ZIKV outbreak among live-born infants during March 2016–March 2018, we conducted a descriptive analysis. Prevalence of ZIKV-associated birth defects was 15.3 cases/100,000 live births. Among 22 infants with ZIKV-associated birth defects, 11 were designated as confirmed (positive for ZIKV) and 11 were designated as probable cases (negative for ZIKV or not tested, but mother was expsed to ZIKV during pregnancy). A total of 91% had microcephaly (head circumference >2 SDs below mean for age and sex), 64% severe microcephaly (head circumference >3 SDs below mean for age and sex), 95% neurodevelopmental abnormalities, 82% brain anomalies, 41% eye abnormalities, and 9% hearing loss. Monitoring children for >1 year can increase identification of ZIKV-associated abnormalities in addition to microcephaly.

Background: There is a lack of studies describing the normal size of the aorta in Mexican population. Objective: To analyze aortic measurements in Mexican patients and to compared them with patients from five different countries. Methods: Measurements of the aorta were divided in Mexicans and controls. Comparisons between ethnicities and groups were performed using Mann Whitney rank sum test. Results: The registry included 166 patients, 106 (63.8%) were enrolled in Mexico and 60 (36.1%) in the control group. Mexican patients had smaller aortic diameters compared to the control group, at the level of the right renal artery ostium, inferior mesenteric artery, and aortic bifurcation. The Hispanic population had significantly smaller aortic diameters from the level of the celiac artery to the aortic bifurcation. Conclusion: The normal aortic diameters in the Mexican population are smaller compared to other countries.

Abstract Arid environments are defined by the lack of water availability, which is directly related to the mean annual precipitation (MAP), and high values of solar irradiation, which impacts the community composition of animals, plants, and the microbial structure of the soil. Recent advances in NGS technologies have expanded our ability to characterize microbiomes, allowing environmental microbiologists to explore the complete microbial structure. Intending to identify and describe the state-of-the-art of bacterial communities in arid soils at a global scale, and to address the effect that some environmental features may have on them, we performed a systematic review based on the PRISMA guideline. Using a combination of keywords, we identified a collection of 66 studies, including 327 sampled sites, reporting the arid soil bacterial community composition by 16S rDNA gene high-throughput sequencing. To identify factors that can modulate bacterial communities, we extracted the geographical, environmental, and physicochemical data. The results indicate that even though each sampled site was catalogued as arid, they show wide variability in altitude, mean annual temperature (MAT), soil pH and electric conductivity, within and between arid environments. We show that arid soils display a higher abundance of Actinobacteria and lower abundance of Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Planctomycetes, compared with non-arid soil microbiomes, revealing that microbial structure seems to be strongly modulated by MAP and MAT and not by pH in arid soils. We observed that environmental and physicochemical features were scarcely described among studies, hence, we propose a reporting guideline for further analysis, which will allow deepening the knowledge of the relationship between the microbiome and abiotic factors in arid soil. Finally, to understand the academic collaborations landscape, we developed an analysis of the author’s network, corroborating a low degree of connectivity and collaborations in this research topic. Considering that it is crucial to understand how microbial processes develop and change in arid soils, our analysis emphasizes the need to increase collaborations between research groups worldwide.

The clinical case of a 38-year-old female patient, seen in an emergency room in a New York hospital, who consults for abdominal pain, fever and fatigue is presented. Complementary studies show lymphopenia and slight alteration of transaminases. Abdominopelvic CT scan visualizes images in the lung bases, reticulonodular type. A sample was taken for COVID-19. She was managed in emergencies with parenteral hydration, antipyretics, oral antibiotics are indicated and social isolation measures are instructed. Two days later, it cost again, confirming positive COVID-19. It is followed on an outpatient basis, one week later with good clinical evolution. Additionally, a clinical review and pathophysiological explanation of the involvement of the digestive tract by the virus and the atypical form of presentation with abdominal pain are shown.

Abstract Background Gibberellins (GA3) are the most sprayed growth regulator for table grape production worldwide, increasing berry size of seedless varieties through pericarp cell expansion. However, these treatments also exacerbate berry drop, which has a detrimental effect on the postharvest quality of commercialized clusters. Several studies have suggested that pedicel stiffening caused by GA3 would have a role in this disorder. Nevertheless, transcriptional and phenotypic information regarding pedicel responses to GA3 is minimal. Results Characterization of responses to GA3 treatments using the lines L23 and Thompson Seedless showed that the former was up to six times more susceptible to berry drop than the latter. GA3 also increased the diameter and dry matter percentage of the pedicel on both genotypes. Induction of lignin biosynthesis-related genes by GA3 has been reported, so the quantity of this polymer was measured. The acetyl bromide method detected a decreased concentration of lignin 7 days after GA3 treatment, due to a higher cell wall yield of the isolated fractions of GA3-treated pedicel samples which caused a dilution effect. Thus, an initial enrichment of primary cell wall components in response to GA3 was suggested, particularly in the L23 background. A transcriptomic profiling was performed to identify which genes were associated with these phenotypic changes. This analysis identified 1281 and 1787 genes differentially upregulated by GA3 in L23 and cv. Thompson Seedless, respectively. Japanese plum fruits are rich in phenolic compounds, such as anthocyanins and flavan-3-ols, whose contents vary significantly among cultivars. Catechin (C) and epicatechin (EC) are flavan-3-ol monomers described in the fruits of this species and are associated with bitterness, astringency, antioxidant capacity, and susceptibility to enzymatic mesocarp browning. In this study, we aimed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with the content of flavan-3-ol in Japanese plum fruits. We evaluated the content of C and EC in the mesocarp and exocarp of samples from 79 and 64 seedlings of an F1 progeny () in the first and second seasons, respectively. We also constructed improved versions of linkage maps from ‘98–99’ and ‘Angeleno,’ presently called single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) after mapping the already available GBS reads to Prunus salicina Lindl. cv. ‘Sanyueli’ v2.0 reference genome. These data allowed for describing a cluster of QTLs in the cultivar, ‘Angeleno,’ associated with the flavan-3-ol composition of mesocarp and exocarp, which explain up to 100% of the C/EC ratio. Additionally, we developed a C/EC metabolic marker, which was mapped between the markers with the highest log of odds (LOD) scores detected by the QTL analysis. The C/EC locus was located in the LG1, at an interval spanning 0.70 cM at 108.30–108.90 cM. Our results suggest the presence of a novel major gene controlling the preferential synthesis of C or EC in the Japanese plum fruits. This study is a significant advance in understanding the regulation of synthesizing compounds associated with fruit quality, postharvest, and human health promotion.

Estimates of animal abundance provide essential information for population ecological studies. However, the recording of individuals in the field can be challenging, and accurate estimates require analytical techniques which account for imperfect detection. Here, we quantify local abundances and overall population size of Morelet’s crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii) in the region of Calakmul (Campeche, Mexico), comparing traditional approaches for crocodylians (Minimum Population Size—MPS; King’s Visible Fraction Method—VFM) with binomial N-mixture models based on Poisson, zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) and negative binomial (NB) distributions. A total of 191 nocturnal spotlight surveys were conducted across 40 representative locations (hydrologically highly dynamic aquatic sites locally known as aguadas) over a period of 3 years (2017–2019). Local abundance estimates revealed a median of 1 both through MPS (min–max: 0–89; first and third quartiles, Q1–Q3: 0–7) and VFM (0–112; Q1–Q3: 0–9) non-hatchling C. moreletii for each aguada, respectively. The ZIP based N-mixture approach shown overall superior confidence over Poisson and NB, and revealed a median of 6 ± 3 individuals (min = 0; max = 120 ± 18; Q1 = 0; Q3 = 18 ± 4) jointly with higher detectabilities in drying aguadas with low and intermediate vegetation cover. Extrapolating these inferences across all waterbodies in the study area yielded an estimated ~10,000 (7,000–11,000) C. moreletii present, highlighting Calakmul as an important region for this species. Because covariates enable insights into population responses to local environmental conditions, N-mixture models applied to spotlight count data result in particularly insightful estimates of crocodylian detection and abundance.

Wounding induces phenolic biosynthesis in broccoli. However, there is scarce information about the physiological and molecular mechanisms governing this stress response. In the present study, a chemical-genetics approach was used to elucidate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene (ET) as stress-signaling molecules in the wound-induced phenolic biosynthesis in broccoli. Wounding activated the biosynthesis of ET and JA. Likewise, the wound-induced biosynthesis of ET and JA was regulated by ROS. JA activated primary metabolism, whereas the three signaling molecules activated phenylpropanoid metabolism. The signaling molecules inhibited the wound-induced activation of the hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA quinate hydroxycinnamoyl transferase (HQT) gene, which is involved in caffeoylquinic acids biosynthesis, and the main phenolics accumulated in wounded broccoli, suggesting that an alternative caffeoylquinic biosynthesis pathway is activated in the tissue due to wounding. ROS mediated the biosynthesis of most individual phenolic compounds evaluated. In conclusion, ROS, ET, and JA are essential in activating broccoli’s primary and secondary metabolism, resulting in phenolic accumulation.

LoRaWAN is a widespread protocol by which Internet of things end nodes (ENs) can exchange information over long distances via their gateways. To deploy the ENs, it is mandatory to perform a link budget analysis, which allows for determining adequate radio parameters like path loss (PL). Thus, designers use PL models developed based on theoretical approaches or empirical data. Some previous measurement campaigns have been performed to characterize this phenomenon, primarily based on distance and frequency. However, previous works have shown that weather variations also impact PL, so using the conventional approaches and available datasets without capturing important environmental effects can lead to inaccurate predictions. Therefore, this paper delivers a data descriptor that includes a set of LoRaWAN measurements performed in Medellín, Colombia, including PL, distance, frequency, temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, particulate matter, and energy, among other things. This dataset can be used by designers who need to fit highly accurate PL models. As an example of the dataset usage, we provide some model fittings including log-distance, and multiple linear regression models with environmental effects. This analysis shows that including such variables improves path loss predictions with an RMSE of 1.84 dB and an R2 of 0.917.

Introduction: Positive airway pressure (PAP) is the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) but adherence to this device is poor. The Sleep and Breathing Disorders Clinic of Fundación Neumológica Colombiana (FNC) has a standardized adaptation session (SAS) aimed at patients with difficulties in using PAP devices. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a SAS in short-term adherence to PAP therapy in patients with OSA, and to determine differences by sex. Materials and methods: Before-and-after single cohort study conducted in 40 people aged ≥18 years with an apnea–hypopnea index ≥15/hour and treated at the FNC, Bogotá D.C. (Colombia) between 2015 and 2017, who attended a SAS due to poor adherence to PAP therapy (defined as 4 hours were recorded before and after the intervention to evaluate changes in patients’ adherence. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The paired samples t-test was used for the comparison of variables before and after the intervention. Results: A significant increase was observed in PAP device use (1.8 hours, 95%CI: 1.3-2.3; p4 hours (35.6%, 95%CI: 26.0-45.3; p4 hours in the study population, particularly in men.

Background: Although periodontal disease is the most frequent reason for extraction in endodontically treated teeth, few studies have evaluated patients with Type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this study, we compared the success of endodontic treatment and the evolution of periapical lesion (PL) in patients with and without T2D. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort including 58 patients who received endodontic treatment (31 with and 27 without T2D) 12 months before. Success of endodontic treatment, evolution of PL, and type of restoration were evaluated. Results: Treatment success was found in 16 (64%) and 23 (85%) patients with and without T2D, respectively (P = 0.07). Patients with diabetes had an increased failure to endodontic treatment risk (relative risk 1.68 [95% confidence interval 1.001–2.845]). The PL reduced or disappeared in 20 (74%) patients without and in 12 (48%) with T2D (P = 0.02). In patients with T2D, HbA1c levels were lower in those with successful treatment than in those with failure in treatment (6.23 ± 0.37 vs. 6.88 ± 0.34, P ≤ 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus has a negative impact on the evolution of endodontic treatment and PL after 12-month follow-up, and it is related to metabolic control.

La fractura mandibular es uno de los tipos más comunes en el trauma maxilofacial pediátrico. El principal objetivo del manejo de fracturas, es la restauración de forma y función del hueso. Las fracturas incompletas son más comunes, debido a la elasticidad del hueso; por lo que, usualmente el tratamiento de fracturas en niños es conservador. Debido al progreso en materiales de reparación ósea y la mejora tecnológica, actualmente la proporción de niños tratados con reducción abierta y fijación interna (RAFI) ha aumentado; siendo el uso de miniplacas y minitornillos el tratamiento gold estándar para fijación semirrígida craneomaxilofacial. Una alternativa son los materiales reabsorbibles, lo cuales no requieren retiro y van degradándose gradualmente, ventaja considerable en el manejo de fracturas mandibulares en niños. Presentamos el caso de un paciente de 6 años, quién sufrió una fractura mandibular parasinfisiaria y condilar por caída de escaleras. Al examen se evidencia limitación de apertura bucal, dolor moderado a la palpación; se solicitaron exámenes imagenológicos donde se evidencia trazo de fractura parasinfisiaria y trazo a nivel intracapsular de cóndilo izquierdo, estas fracturas fueron manejadas con placas reabsorbibles y tratamiento conservador, respectivamente. El resultado fue óptimo.

Objetivo. Determinar la eficacia de la minociclina en gel de liberación prolongada siendo un agente antimicrobiano en el tratamiento de la pulpotomía infantil y la eficacia de la minociclina aplicada como medicamento en el tratamiento de pulpotomía. Métodos. A 39 órganos dentales se les realizó el tratamiento de pulpotomía de acuerdo a la técnica descrita por Sweet y cols., previo y posterior a la colocación del medicamento minociclina, se tomó una muestra (colocación de punta de papel) y se realizó conteo de microorganismos por método de conteo de placa. Resultados. Se realizó una revisión clínica y radiográfica, haciéndolo a los 15, 30, 90 y 180 días, los resultados se registraron de acuerdo al instrumento clínico y radiográfico de la Asociación Americana de Odontología Pediátrica (AAPD). Se presentó tres casos de fracaso que representa apenas el 8%, teniendo un éxito de 92% este tratamiento. Conclusiones. Se concluyó que la medicación con minociclina resulta un auxiliar valioso en la desinfección local de la cámara pulpar y por tanto para el tratamiento de pulpotomías.

Múltiples estrategias para potenciar la innovación abierta se han conjugado buscando la generación conjunta de valor entre diversos actores a través de la cocreación de experiencias. Algunas consisten en técnicas presenciales en las que los interesados deben estar concentrados en el mismo lugar y tiempo, mientras otras usan las redes sociales y portales web porque facilitan la colaboración y cocreación de una manera natural y además proporcionan herramientas especializadas de acuerdo a los requerimientos particulares de un proyecto. El presente trabajo muestra un marco de referencia para la selección de un portal web con fines de cocreación, facilitando así la labor de escoger, con criterios claros, la mejor herramienta para un proceso de innovación abierta virtual. Algunos resultados preliminares permiten evidenciar que la selección adecuada de la herramienta de interacción en un proceso de innovación abierta es determinante para el éxito del proceso. De otro lado, se ratifica que el internet (puntualmente herramientas como los portales empresariales de innovación) es un potenciador en el intercambio de información. Lo anterior porque facilita la interacción entre participantes distribuidos geográficamente y ofrece posibilidades de colaborar de forma asíncrona. Con esto se eliminan las limitantes de tiempo y espacio que se presentan al pensar en esquemas presenciales para cocrear.

Introduction: Direct visual inspection for cervical cancer screening remains controversial, whereas colposcopy-biopsy is considered the gold standard for diagnosis of preneoplastic cervical lesions. Objectives: To determine the rates of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or more and of false positives for colposcopy and direct visual inspection. Materials and methods: Women aged 25-59 underwent direct visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), Lugol’s iodine (VIA-VILI), and colposcopy. Punch biopsies were obtained for all positive tests. Using histology as the gold standard, detection and false positive rates were compared for VIA, VIA-VILI, and colposcopy (two thresholds). Sensitivity and false positive ratios with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Results: We included 5,011 women in the analysis and we obtained 602 biopsies. Positivity rates for colposcopy high-grade and low-grade diagnosis were 1.6% and 10.8%. Positivity rates for VIA and VIA-VILI were 7.4% and 9.9%. VIA showed a significantly lower detection rate than colposcopy with low-grade diagnosis as the threshold (SR=0.72; 95% CI 0.57-0.91), and significantly lower false positive rate (FPR=0.70; 95% CI 0.65-0.76). No differences between VIA-VILI and colposcopy low-grade threshold were observed. VIA and VIA-VILI showed significantly higher detection and false positive rates than colposcopy high-grade threshold. Sensitivity rates for visual inspection decreased with age and false positive rates increased. For all age groups, false positive rates for VIA and VIA-VILI were significantly higher than colposcopy. Conclusions: Detection rates for VIA-VILI similar to colposcopy low-grade threshold represent a chance to reduce cervical cancer mortality through see-and-treat approaches among women with limited access to health care. Lower detection rates suggest reviewing high-grade colposcopy findings as the threshold for biopsy in certain settings.

Abstract Background Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is a basal angiosperm from the Lauraceae family. This species has a diploid genome with an approximated size of ~ 920 Mbp and produces a climacteric, fleshy and oily fruit. The flowering and fruit set are particularly prolonged processes, lasting between one to three months, generating important differences in physiological ages of the fruit within the same tree. So far there is no detailed genomic information regarding this species, being the cultivar ‘Hass’ especially important for avocado growers worldwide. With the aim to explore the fruit avocado transcriptome and to identify candidate biomarkers to monitore fruit development, we carried out an RNA-Seq approach during 4 stages of ‘Hass’ fruit development: 150 days after fruit set (DAFS), 240 DAFS, 300 DAFS (harvest) and 390 DAFS (late-harvest). Results The ‘Hass’ de novo transcriptome contains 62,203 contigs (x̅=988 bp, N50 = 1050 bp). We found approximately an 85 and 99% of complete ultra-conserved genes in eukaryote and plantae database using BUSCO (Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs) and CEGMA (Core Eukaryotic Gene Mapping Approach), respectively. Annotation was performed with BLASTx, resulting in a 58% of annotated contigs (90% of differentially expressed genes were annotated). Differentially expressed genes analysis (DEG; with False Discovery Rate ≤ 0.01) found 8672 genes considering all developmental stages. From this analysis, genes were clustered according to their expression pattern and 1209 genes show correlation with the four developmental stages. Conclusions Candidate genes are proposed as possible biomarkers for monitoring the development of the ‘Hass’ avocado fruit associated with lipid metabolism, ethylene signaling pathway, auxin signaling pathway, and components of the cell wall.

Since drought is the leading environmental factor limiting crop productivity, and plants have a significant impact in defining the assembly of plant-specific microbial communities associated with roots, we aimed to determine the effect of thoroughly selected water deficit tolerant and susceptible Solanum lycopersicum cultivars on their rhizosphere microbiome and compared their response with plant-free soil microbial communities. We identified a total of 4,248 bacterial and 276 fungal different operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in soils by massive sequencing. We observed that tomato cultivars significantly affected the alpha and beta diversity of their bacterial rhizosphere communities but not their fungal communities compared with bulk soils (BSs), showing a plant effect exclusively on the bacterial soil community. Also, an increase in alpha diversity in response to water deficit of both bacteria and fungi was observed in the susceptible rhizosphere (SRz) but not in the tolerant rhizosphere (TRz) cultivar, implying a buffering effect of the tolerant cultivar on its rhizosphere microbial communities. Even though water deficit did not affect the microbial diversity of the tolerant cultivar, the interaction network analysis revealed that the TRz microbiota displayed the smallest and least complex soil network in response to water deficit with the least number of connected components, nodes, and edges. This reduction of the TRz network also correlated with a more efficient community, reflected in increased cooperation within kingdoms. Furthermore, we identified some specific bacteria and fungi in the TRz in response to water deficit, which, given that they belong to taxa with known beneficial characteristics for plants, could be contributing to the tolerant phenotype, highlighting the metabolic bidirectionality of the holobiont system. Future assays involving characterization of root exudates and exchange of rhizospheres between drought-tolerant and susceptible cultivars could determine the effect of specific metabolites on the microbiome community and may elucidate their functional contribution to the tolerance of plants to water deficit.

Consumption of fresh fruit is known to protect against non-communicable diseases due to the fruit's content in compounds with an antioxidant capacity, among them is polyphenols. Asian plums (Prunus salicina L.) accumulate more than 40 phenolic compounds, with a remarkable diversity in their profiles, depending on the variety and environmental conditions. Although candidate genes have been indicated to control this trait, the loci controlling its phenotypic variation have not yet been defined in this species. The aim of this work was to identify the quantitative trait Loci (QTL) controlling the phenolic compounds content in the Asian plum skin and flesh. Using UHPLC-DAD-Orbitrap-MS, we determined that cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside are the main anthocyanins in Asian plums. Other anthocyanins found to a lesser extent were tentatively identified as cyanidin bound to different sugar and procyanidin moieties. Then we phenotyped fruits of 92 and 80 F1 seedlings from the cross < “98.99” × “Angeleno”> (98 Ang) for two harvest seasons. We used HPLC-DAD to quantify single anthocyanin and spectrophotometric techniques to determine the total content of phenols, flavonoids, procyanidins, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP). To determine the phenotype-genotype association of phenolic compounds content, phenotypic values (adjusted by linear mixed-effects models), genotypic data and linkage maps were analyzed with the multiple QTL model (MQM) approach. We found a total of 21 significant trait-marker associations: 13 QTLs segregating from “98.99” and 8 QTLs from “Angeleno.” From these associations, 8 corresponded to phenolic compound content in the flesh and 13 in the skin. Phenotype variance was explained by the detected loci, ranging from 12.4 to 27.1%. The identified loci are related to the content of cyanidin-3-glucoside (LG4), cyanidin-3-rutinoside (LG4), total flavonoids and procyanidins (LG5 and LG8), and minor anthocyanin compounds (LG3 and LG4). These results will help improve the efficiency of breeding programs for the generation of Asian plum varieties with high phenolic compound content.

El TDAH constituye un trastorno de gran frecuencia en la niñez. Se caracteriza por patrones persistentes de desatención, hiperactividad-impulsividad. La condición de TDAH se ha asociado con el mecanismo cerebral cognitivo de auto regulación conocido como Funciones Ejecutivas (FE). El presente trabajo de carácter cuantitativo, correlacional y transversal se focalizó en describir y comparar el rendimiento de Funciones Ejecutivas según padres y profesores en una muestra de escolares (50) con y sin diagnóstico de TDAH. La metodología considero la administración de pruebas de diagnóstico de TDAH (Conners) y de evaluación de FE a través del Inventario Comprensivo de Funciones Ejecutivas (CEFI). Los resultados indicaron diferencias significativas entre la evaluación de padres y profesores, como también entre las pruebas administradas. Los padres tenderían a evaluar el rendimiento de funciones ejecutivas en términos más flexibles que los docentes.

Tsunami hazard can be analyzed from both deterministic and probabilistic points of view. The deterministic approach is based on a “credible” worst case tsunami, which is often selected from historical events in the region of study. Within the probabilistic approach (PTHA, Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Analysis), statistical analysis can be carried out in particular regions where historical records of tsunami heights and runup are available. In areas where these historical records are scarce, synthetic series of events are usually generated using Monte Carlo approaches. Commonly, the sea level variation and the currents forced by the tidal motion are either disregarded or considered and treated as aleatory uncertainties in the numerical models. However, in zones with a macro and meso tidal regime, the effect of the tides on the probability distribution of tsunami hazard can be highly important. In this work, we present a PTHA methodology based on the generation of synthetic seismic catalogs and the incorporation of the sea level variation into a Monte Carlo simulation. We applied this methodology to the Bay of Cádiz area in Spain, a zone that was greatly damaged by the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. We build a database of tsunami numerical simulations for different variables: faults, earthquake magnitudes, epicenter locations and sea levels. From this database we generate a set of scenarios from the synthetic seismic catalogs and tidal conditions based on the probabilistic distribution of the involved variables. These scenarios cover the entire range of possible tsunami events in the synthetic catalog (earthquakes and sea levels). Each tsunami scenario is propagated using the tsunami numerical model C3, from the source region to the target coast (Cádiz Bay). Finally, we map the maximum values for a given probability of the selected variables (tsunami intensity measures) producing a set of thematic hazard maps. 1000 different time series of combined tsunamigenic earthquakes and tidal levels were synthetically generated using the Monte Carlo technique. Each time series had a 10000-year duration. The tsunami characteristics were statistically analyzed to derive different thematic maps for the return periods of 500, 1000, 5000, and 10000 years, including the maximum wave elevation, the maximum current speed, the maximum Froude number, and the maximum total forces.

Tsunamis are unpredictable and infrequent but potentially large impact natural disasters. To prepare, mitigate and prevent losses from tsunamis, probabilistic hazard and risk analysis methods have been developed and have proved useful. However, large gaps and uncertainties still exist and many steps in the assessment methods lack information, theoretical foundation, or commonly accepted methods. Moreover, applied methods have very different levels of maturity, from already advanced probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis for earthquake sources, to less mature probabilistic risk analysis. In this review we give an overview of the current state of probabilistic tsunami hazard and risk analysis. Identifying research gaps, we offer suggestions for future research directions. An extensive literature list allows for branching into diverse aspects of this scientific approach.

Esta investigación presenta el diseño de una antena plana en forma de “F” invertida (PIFA) para Internet de las Cosas (IoT), con una frecuencia principal de resonancia fr = 2.45 GHz, pero pudiendo ser utilizada también como antena multibanda. La antena desarrollada tiene como elemento principal un parche, las dimensiones de ancho y largo fueron calculadas y optimizadas para resonar a la frecuencia de resonancia. Se ajustó la dimensión del plano de tierra consiguiendo una ganancia máxima de 6.47 dBi. Además de la ganancia, se verificó el efecto que produce este elemento en el patrón de radiación. Otro elemento importante en el diseño de la PIFA es el cortocircuito. Su correcta integración permitió ajustar la frecuencia de resonancia con un ancho de banda óptimo. Por último, se utilizó la técnica de crear ranuras o espacios en el parche con el objetivo de conseguir una antena multibanda, permitiéndole resonar en frecuencias superiores a la principal. Finalmente se mencionan los atributos de la antena diseñada y se resalta la influencia ejercida de sus elementos en los distintos parámetros de la PIFA.

The NEAM Tsunami Hazard Model 2018 (NEAMTHM18) is a probabilistic hazard model for tsunamis generated by earthquakes. It covers the coastlines of the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and connected seas (NEAM). NEAMTHM18 was designed as a three-phase project. The first two phases were dedicated to the model development and hazard calculations, following a formalized decision-making process based on a multiple-expert protocol. The third phase was dedicated to documentation and dissemination. The hazard assessment workflow was structured in Steps and Levels. There are four Steps: Step-1) probabilistic earthquake model; Step-2) tsunami generation and modeling in deep water; Step-3) shoaling and inundation; Step-4) hazard aggregation and uncertainty quantification. Each Step includes a different number of Levels. Level-0 always describes the input data; the other Levels describe the intermediate results needed to proceed from one Step to another. Alternative datasets and models were considered in the implementation. The epistemic hazard uncertainty was quantified through an ensemble modeling technique accounting for alternative models’ weights and yielding a distribution of hazard curves represented by the mean and various percentiles. Hazard curves were calculated at 2,343 Points of Interest (POI) distributed at an average spacing of ∼20 km. Precalculated probability maps for five maximum inundation heights (MIH) and hazard intensity maps for five average return periods (ARP) were produced from hazard curves. In the entire NEAM Region, MIHs of several meters are rare but not impossible. Considering a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years (ARP≈2,475 years), the POIs with MIH >5 m are fewer than 1% and are all in the Mediterranean on Libya, Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece coasts. In the North-East Atlantic, POIs with MIH >3 m are on the coasts of Mauritania and Gulf of Cadiz. Overall, 30% of the POIs have MIH >1 m. NEAMTHM18 results and documentation are available through the TSUMAPS-NEAM project website (http://www.tsumaps-neam.eu/), featuring an interactive web mapper. Although the NEAMTHM18 cannot substitute in-depth analyses at local scales, it represents the first action to start local and more detailed hazard and risk assessments and contributes to designing evacuation maps for tsunami early warning.

Soil microorganisms that inhabit extreme environments have unique metabolic capacities and/or physical structures that allow them to survive in oligotrophic conditions. The bioprospecting of unknown bacteria in the context of current advances in genome mining is fundamental for the discovery of natural products with novel properties or applications. In this study, the plant growth-promoting and biocontrol traits of a Pseudomonas isolated from soil associated with plants from the Atacama Desert were characterized by whole-genome sequencing and in vitro assays. A high-quality genome draft of Pseudomonas sp. isolate C3 was obtained. An automated biosynthetic gene cluster analysis using antiSMASH 6.0 revealed the presence of a cluster of genes for the biosynthesis, regulation, and transport of the metabolite 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol, which showed a high protein sequence identity (>89%) with a validated orthologous gene cluster from another Pseudomonas. In addition, via an in vitro assay, the biocontrol activity of Pseudomonas sp. isolate C3 against Botrytis cinerea, Monilinia fructicola, Phytium sp., Alternaria sp., Geotrichum candidum, and Fusarium oxysporum was corroborated. Finally, through KofamKOALA, the presence of genes involved in different metabolic pathways of plant growth-promoting traits was identified, which was corroborated by in vitro assays. This study provides information obtained from genomic analyses and culture tools on a bacterial isolate from the Atacama Desert characterized by plant growth-promoting capacities and biocontrol activity.

IntroductionSome patients with COVID-19 pneumonia present systemic disease involving multiple systems. There is limited information about the clinical characteristics and events leading to acute kidney injury (AKI). We described the factors associated with the development of AKI and explored the relation of AKI and mortality in Mexican population with severe COVID-19.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records of individuals with severe pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2 hospitalized at the largest third-level reference institution for COVID-19 care in Mexico between March and April 2020. Demographic information, comorbidities, clinical and laboratory data, dates of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and hospitalization, mechanical-ventilator settings and use of vasoactive drugs were recorded.ResultsOf 99 patients studied, 58 developed AKI (58.6%). The risk factors for AKI were older age (OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.01-1.13, p = 0.024); obesity (OR = 6.58, 95% CI = 1.8-24.05, p = 0.040); and the need for IMV (OR = 6.18, CI = 1.29-29.58, p = 0.023). The risk factors for mortality were obesity (OR = 5.57, 95% CI = 1.48-20.93, p = 0.011); requirement of vasoactive drugs on admission (OR = 5.35, 95% CI = 1.16-24.61, p = 0.031); and AKI (OR = 8.61, 95% CI = 2.24-33.1, p = 0.002). In-hospital mortality was significantly higher in patients with AKI stage 3 (79.3%) and AKI stage 2 (68.7%) compared with those with AKI stage 1 (25%; p = 0.004). Fifty-three patients underwent the furosemide stress test (FST) to predict progression to AKI stage 3. Of those, 12 progressed to AKI stage 3 (22%). The ROC curve for the FST had an AUC of 0.681 (p = 0.009); a sensitivity of 81.6% and a specificity of 54.5%.ConclusionsAKI was common in our cohort of patients with severe pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. The risk factors for AKI were older age, obesity and the need for of IMV on admission. The risk factors for mortality were obesity, requirement of vasoactive drugs on admission and AKI. Mortality was more frequent in patients with AKI stages 2-3. The FST had an acceptable predictive capacity to identify patients progressing to AKI stage 3.

The integration of HIV DNA into the host genome contributes to lifelong infection in most individuals. Few studies have examined integration in lymphoid tissue, where HIV predominantly persists before and after antiretroviral treatment (ART). Of particular interest is whether integration site distributions differ between infection stages with paired blood and tissue comparisons. Here, we profiled HIV integration site distributions in sorted memory, tissue-resident, and/or follicular helper CD4+ T cell subsets from paired blood and lymphoid tissue samples from acute, chronic, and ART-treated individuals. We observed minor differences in the frequency of nonintronic and nondistal intergenic sites, varying with tissue and residency phenotypes during ART. Genomic and epigenetic annotations were generally similar. Clonal expansion of cells marked by identical integration sites was detected, with increased detection in chronic and ART-treated individuals. However, overlap between or within CD4+ T cell subsets or tissue compartments was only observed in 8 unique sites of the 3540 sites studied. Together, these findings suggest that shared integration sites between blood and tissue may, depending on the tissue site, be the exception rather than the rule and indicate that additional studies are necessary to fully understand the heterogeneity of tissue-sequestered HIV reservoirs.

During the late twentieth century, the “Green Revolution” attained wide-ranging poverty alleviation, food security and improved nutrition across rural Asia. As these achievements were often reached at large environmental costs, “greener” trajectories urgently need to be traced for Asia's agri-food systems. In this sense, agro-ecological and biodiversity-based (ABB) farming systems can provide sufficient food, lift resource-use efficiencies and lower fossil-fuel dependencies while safeguarding the environment. Here, we systematically assess past progress and prospects for biodiversity-based pest management -or biological control (BC)- in five Asian countries. We characterize the extent to which BC science has matured, translated into practice and attained “real-world” outcomes within the prevailing farming systems of each country. To achieve this, we revert to the world-view of the eighteenth century naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. Doing so, we represent the extent to which BC science has progressed along a six-step “impact pathway” –from a description of on-farm biodiversity, over ecosystem service delivery to verifiable socio-economic outcomes. Our work pinpoints ways to strategize ABB science for an accelerated, evidence-based uptake by end-users within local agri-food systems. By entwining our Humboldtian “nature-culture” perspective with farmer-scientist co-innovation, bolstered awareness-raising and supportive policies, ABB farming transitions could be initiated that are prone to deliver concrete, desirable agro-ecological outcomes at local and regional scales.

Resistant genotypes of crops have emerged as an alternative and sustainable solution to pesticide use against pest insects. The resistance depends on the genetic diversity of the host plant and the pest species and can cause an alteration of the insect behavior. The aim of this work was to characterize the resistance level of different Pisum genotypes (one P. fulvum and five P. sativum genotypes) to two biotypes of the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, respectively adapted to pea and alfalfa, by measuring the individual aphid weight and analyzing aphid feeding behavior by electropenetrography (EPG). Aphid body mass was influenced by Pisum genotypes reflecting variation in their resistance level. P. fulvum was the most resistant to the A. pisum pea biotype (ArPo28 clone) and showed intermediate resistance to the A. pisum alfalfa biotype (LSR1 clone). The resistance levels of the five P. sativum genotypes to the two aphid biotypes were variable and more pronounced for the alfalfa biotype. EPG data showed that ArPo28 on P. fulvum and LSR1 on all the Pisum genotypes spent shorter time phloem feeding compared to ArPo28 on P. sativum genotypes, indicating that the resistance of Pisum genotypes to non-adapted A. pisum resides in mesophyll and phloem cells. In the meantime, ArPo28 on P. sativum genotypes with a different level of resistance spent a similar length of time phloem feeding, indicating that the quality of phloem sap of the resistance genotypes may not be optimal for the aphid. The study indicated that the resistance of Pisum genotypes to the two A. pisum biotypes involves different genetic factors and mechanisms that affect the aphid differently.

A high proportion of critically ill patients with COVID-19 develop acute kidney injury (AKI) and die. The early recognition of subclinical AKI could contribute to AKI prevention. Therefore, this study was aimed at exploring the role of the urinary biomarkers NGAL and [TIMP-2] × [IGFBP7] for the early detection of AKI in this population. This prospective, longitudinal cohort study included critically ill COVID-19 patients without AKI at study entry. Urine samples were collected on admission to critical care areas for determination of NGAL and [TIMP-2] × [IGFBP7] concentrations. The demographic information, comorbidities, clinical, and laboratory data were recorded. The study outcomes were the development of AKI and mortality during hospitalization. Of the 51 individuals that were studied, 25 developed AKI during hospitalization (49%). Of those, 12 had persistent AKI (23.5%). The risk factors for AKI were male gender (HR = 7.57, 95% CI: 1.28–44.8; p = 0.026) and [TIMP-2] × [IGFBP7] ≥ 0.2 (ng/mL)2/1000 (HR = 7.23, 95% CI: 0.99–52.4; p = 0.050). Mortality during hospitalization was significantly higher in the group with AKI than in the group without AKI (p = 0.004). Persistent AKI was a risk factor for mortality (HR = 7.42, 95% CI: 1.04–53.04; p = 0.046). AKI was frequent in critically ill COVID-19 patients. The combination of [TIMP-2] × [IGFBP7] together with clinical information, were useful for the identification of subclinical AKI in critically ill COVID-19 patients. The role of additional biomarkers and their possible combinations for detection of AKI in ritically ill COVID-19 patients remains to be explored in large clinical trials.
