16. Size Control and Improved Aqueous Colloidal Stability of Surface-Functionalized ZnGa2O4:Cr3+Bright Persistent Luminescent Nanoparticles

Abstract

Near-infrared (NIR)-emitting ZnGa2O4:Cr3+(ZGO) persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) have recently attracted considerable attention for diverse optical applications. The widespread use and promising potential of ZGO material in different applications arise from its prolonged post-excitation emission (several minutes to hours) that eliminates the need for continuous in situexcitation and the possibility of its excitation in different spectral regions (X-rays and UV–vis). However, the lack of precise control over particle size/distribution and its poor water dispersibility and/or limited colloidal stability required for certain biological applications are the major bottlenecks that limit its practical applications. To address these fundamental limitations, herein, we have prepared oleic acid (OA)-stabilized ZGO PLNPs with controlled size (7–12 nm, depending on the type of alcohol used in synthesis) and monodispersity. A further increase in size (8–21 nm), with a concomitant increase in persistent luminescence, could be achieved using a seed-mediated approach, employing the as-prepared ZGO PLNPs from the first synthesis as the seed and growing layers of the same material by adding fresh precursors. To remove their surface oleate groups and make the nanoparticles hydrophilic, two surface modification strategies were evaluated: modification with only poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the hydrophilic capping agent and modification with either PAA or cysteamine (Cys) as the hydrophilic capping agent in conjunction with BF4–as the intermediate surface modifier. The latter surface modifications involving BF4–conferred long-term (60 days and longer) colloidal stability to the nanoparticles in aqueous media, which is related to their favorable ζ potential values. The proposed generalized strategy could be used to prepare different kinds of surface-functionalized PLNPs with control of size, hydrophilicity, and colloidal stability and enhanced/prolonged persistent luminescence for diverse potential applications.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, we used Lanistes varicus and Achatina achatina snail shell powders as a calcium source for the synthesis of calcium phosphate bioceramics by using coprecipation method and microwave irradiation method. X-Rays Diffraction Analysis, Thermal Analysis (TGA), Acid-Base back titration method and FTIR analysis of the powders of the snail shells revealed that they contain more than 98% of calcium carbonate CaCO 3 with aragonite as the major phase. Structural characterization and elucidation of synthesized bioceramics were done using X-Rays diffraction analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The results have revealed that synthesized calcium phosphate bioceramics contain a mixture of Hydroxyapatite (HA: Ca 10 (PO 4) 6 (OH) 2) and apatitic Tricalcium Phosphate (TPa: Ca 9 (HPO 4) (PO 4) 5 (OH) whatever the method of synthesis. and the variety of snail shell used. The study of the antibacterial activity of synthesized bioceramics has shown that only those obtained with Lanistes varicus powder significantly inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with a lasting effect. On the other side, inhibition of growth of Klebsiella oxytoca is partial and a resistance to the antimicrobial activity of bioceramics was noticed. Thus bioceramics synthesized from Lanistes varicus snail shell powder has antibacterial property and should be used against the growth of pathogens causing dental cavities.

27. Gadolinium−Europium Carbonate Particles: Controlled Precipitation for Luminescent Biolabeling

Abstract

Europium-doped gadolinium carbonates particles have been prepared via urea-assisted precipitation. The reaction has been followed step by step with the investigations of the precipitate by transmission electron microscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering, in relation with infrared absorption and thermal analyses. It has been observed that spherical particles of (Gd0.95Eu0.05)(OH)CO3, monodispersed in size and amorphous, precipitate first and then transform to agglomerated platelike crystals of (Gd0.95Eu0.05)2(CO3)3·2H2O as the precipitation continues. The Eu3+5D0→ 7FJemission spectrum and the 5D0lifetime in the two carbonate matrices have been measured. Selected hydroxycarbonate nanoparticles (NPs), with diameters of 164 ± 20 nm, have been then transformed to oxide NPs having the cubic crystalline structure C-(Gd0.95Eu0.05)2O3, with the same shape and size. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of hydroxycarbonate and oxide NPs, and of their colloidal suspensions in water, have been investigated. The hydroxycarbonate and the oxide NPs exhibit same PL intensities when excitation is achieved in one of the Eu3+(4f6) levels. Tests of in vitro fluorescence imaging have been performed. The luminescent NPs have been observed after their internalization by human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells. It is concluded that the controlled (urea-assisted) precipitation is appropriate to synthesize Gd(OH)CO3:Eu3+and Gd2O3:Eu3+nanoparticles having adequate characteristics for biolabeling.

Abstract

National audience; Nous présentons et discutons les résultats obtenus sur divers objectifs du programme. PRONANOX : PROcédés de synthèse et de traitement de NANopoudres d’Oxyde, soutenu par l’ANR (05-RNMP-002.). Nous visons la synthèse de poudres sèches d’oxydes simples : ZnO et TiO2, de dimension moyenne comprise entre 50 à 500 nm. Les points abordés sont: - Le développement de la pyrolyse d'aérosol (PA) biphasée pour la synthèse de nanopoudres de ZnO. - Le développement de la technique de décomposition en phase homogène de précurseurs volatils et de nucléation de nanopoudres de ZnO par CVD homogène. - Le développement de la pyrolyse laser (PL) pour la synthèse de poudres nanométriques de TiO2. - Le dépôt par CVD en lit vibro-fluidisé de silicium sur poudres sub-micrométriques de TiO2. Les produits issus des différentes voies de synthèse et post traitements sont caractérisés par les méthodes physico-chimiques et structurales adaptées et complémentaires : mesures de densité, de porosité; caractérisations morphologiques et granulométriques ; identification des phases cristallines; spectroscopies vibrationnelles et optiques.

38. VUV Excitation of YBO3and (Y,Gd)BO3Phosphors Doped with Eu3+or Tb3+: Comparison of Efficiencies and Effect of Site-Selectivity

Abstract

Borate phosphors, with formulations Y0.95Eu0.05BO3(YBEu), Y0.95Tb0.05BO3(YBTb), Y0.57Gd0.38Eu0.05BO3(Y6G4BEu), and Y0.57Gd0.38Tb0.05BO3(Y6G4BTb) have been synthesized by spray pyrolysis at the maximum temperature of 700 °C, and then annealed at 1200 °C. The yttrium oxide-doped phosphor Y0.95Eu0.05O1.5(YOEu) was obtained by the same experimental conditions. The UV−VUV excitation spectra of the samples were recorded using synchrotron radiation. The emission intensities of these phosphors have also been investigated as a function of plasma gas pressure in a dedicated experimental setup. The intensities in the emission spectra were integrated, to compare the relative efficiencies of the phosphors. All phosphors were more efficient with increasing gas pressure in the plasma chamber. The emission intensity of YOEu was similar to that of YBEu or Y6G4BEu at low Ne−Xe pressure, but stronger at high pressure. For both lanthanide activators, the mixed borates Y6G4B and the pure YBO3(YB) have about same luminescence efficiency at low pressure, but the Y6G4B are better matrices than YB at high Ne−Xe pressure. With the introduction of Gd3+in the borates, the emission intensity is enhanced due to a better spectral overlap with the plasma emission at 173 nm, and also the occurrence of multiple energy transfers between Gd3+ions before transfer to the emitter Eu3+or Tb3+. A “color effect” with the variation of pressure in the plasma chamber is observed for the Eu3+-doped phosphors. The orange:red intensity ratio (i.e., 5D0→ 7F0,1(560−600 nm)/5D0→ 7F2(600−640 nm)) increases as the gas pressure is raised. This observation is related to the spectral changes occurring in the plasma, and it is corroborated by the observation of selective excitation in the VUV range of Eu3+at Civersus C1crystallographic sites.

41. Size Control and Improved Aqueous Colloidal Stability of Surface-Functionalized ZnGa 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ Bright Persistent Luminescent Nanoparticles.

Abstract

Near-infrared (NIR)-emitting ZnGa 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ (ZGO) persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) have recently attracted considerable attention for diverse optical applications. The widespread use and promising potential of ZGO material in different applications arise from its prolonged post-excitation emission (several minutes to hours) that eliminates the need for continuous in situ excitation and the possibility of its excitation in different spectral regions (X-rays and UV-vis). However, the lack of precise control over particle size/distribution and its poor water dispersibility and/or limited colloidal stability required for certain biological applications are the major bottlenecks that limit its practical applications. To address these fundamental limitations, herein, we have prepared oleic acid (OA)-stabilized ZGO PLNPs with controlled size (7-12 nm, depending on the type of alcohol used in synthesis) and monodispersity. A further increase in size (8-21 nm), with a concomitant increase in persistent luminescence, could be achieved using a seed-mediated approach, employing the as-prepared ZGO PLNPs from the first synthesis as the seed and growing layers of the same material by adding fresh precursors. To remove their surface oleate groups and make the nanoparticles hydrophilic, two surface modification strategies were evaluated: modification with only poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the hydrophilic capping agent and modification with either PAA or cysteamine (Cys) as the hydrophilic capping agent in conjunction with BF 4 - as the intermediate surface modifier. The latter surface modifications involving BF 4 - conferred long-term (60 days and longer) colloidal stability to the nanoparticles in aqueous media, which is related to their favorable ζ potential values. The proposed generalized strategy could be used to prepare different kinds of surface-functionalized PLNPs with control of size, hydrophilicity, and colloidal stability and enhanced/prolonged persistent luminescence for diverse potential applications.
