Abstract

Material responses to static and dynamic stimuli, represented as nonlinear curves, are design targets for engineering functionalities like structural support, impact protection, and acoustic and photonic bandgaps. Three-dimensional metamaterials offer significant tunability due to their internal structure, yet existing methods struggle to capture their complex behavior-to-structure relationships. We present GraphMetaMat, a graph-based framework capable of designing three-dimensional metamaterials with programmable responses and arbitrary manufacturing constraints. Integrating graph networks, physics biases, reinforcement learning, and tree search, GraphMetaMat can target stress-strain curves spanning four orders of magnitude and complex behaviors, as well as viscoelastic transmission responses with varying attenuation gaps. GraphMetaMat can create cushioning materials for protective equipment and vibration-damping panels for electric vehicles, outperforming commercial materials, and enabling the automatic design of materials with on-demand functionalities., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In this paper we propose two numerical algorithms to solve a coupled PDE-ODE system which models a slow vehicle (bottleneck) moving on a road together with other cars. The resulting system is fully coupled because the dynamics of the slow vehicle depends on the density of cars and, at the same time, it causes a capacity drop in the road, thus limiting the car flux. The first algorithm, based on the Wave Front Tracking method, is suitable for theoretical investigations and convergence results. Abstract

Ocular vision can be hampered by corneal damages, sensibly reducing patients' quality of life and having important social and economic consequences. Ocular surface diseases, which often lead to corneal opacities with visual impairment are the most severe forms of the Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD). The present review provides an updated perspective on the available treatments for LSCD, focusing on clinical and biological features, as well as critical points to monitor during clinical translation. Recently developed surgical treatments for LSCD are described, along with their benefits and limitations, with the aim of addressing the issue of correct patient selection.

30. Some considerations on skewness and kurtosis of vertical velocity in the convective boundary layer

Abstract

Data of skewness $S$ and kurtosis $K$ of vertical velocity in the convective boundary layer from different datasets have been analysed. Vertical profiles of $S$ were found to be grouped into two classes that display different slopes with height: one is nearly constant and the other is increasing. This behaviour can be explained using a simple model for the PDF of vertical velocity and assuming two distinct vertical profiles of updraft area fraction from literature. The possibility of describing the explicit dependence of $K$ on $S$ was revised critically, also considering the neutral limit as well as the limit for very small non-dimensional height. It was found that the coefficients of the relationship depends on both the Obukhov length scale $L$ and inversion height $z_i$.

Abstract

In an article on statistical modelling of turbulent relative dispersion, Franzese & Cassiani (2007, p. 402) commented on Lagrangian stochastic models and reported some concern about the consistency between statisti- cal and stochastic modelling of turbulent dispersion. In this short article, comparison of the two approaches is performed. As far as the dependence of models from turbulence constants is concerned, the two theoretical ap- proaches are found to be in perfect agreement eliminating every possible concern.

Abstract

An ordinary Dirichlet series has three abscissae of interest, describing the maximal regions where the Dirichlet series converges, converges uniformly, and con- verges absolutely. The paper of Hille and Bohnenblust in 1931, regarding the region on which a Dirichlet series can converge uniformly but not absolutely, has prompted much investigation into this region, the "Bohr strip". However, a related natural question has apparently gone unanswered: For a Dirichlet series with non-trivial Bohr strip, how far beyond the Bohr strip might the series converge? We investigate this question by explicit construction, creating Dirichlet series which converge beyond their Bohr strip.

Abstract

Ventricular tachycardia (VT), which can lead to sudden cardiac death, occurs frequently in patients after myocardial infarction. Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA) is a modestly effective treatment of VT, but it has limitations and risks. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)–based heart digital twins have emerged as a useful tool for identifying VT circuits for RFA treatment planning. However, the CMR resolution used to reconstruct these digital twins may impact VT circuit predictions, leading to incorrect RFA treatment planning.

A classical theorem of Landau states that, if an ordinary Dirichlet series has non-negative coefficients, then it has a singularity on the real line at its abscissae of absolute convergence. In this article, we relax the condition on the coefficients while still arriving at the same conclusion. Specifically, we write $a_n$ as $|a_n| e^{i \ttt_n}$ and we consider the sequences $\{\; |a_n| \; \}$ and $\{\; \cos{\ttt_n} \; \}$. Let $M \in \mathbb{N}$ be given. The condition on $\{\; |a_n| \; \}$ is that, dividing the sequence sequentially into vectors of length $M$, each vector lies in a certain convex cone $B \subset [0,\infty)^M$. The condition on $\{\; \cos{\ttt_n} \; \}$ is (roughly) that, again dividing the sequence sequentially into vectors of length $M$, each vector lies in the negative of the polar cone of $B$. Abstract

ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is associated with a systemic and local inflammatory response with edema. However, their role at the tissue level is poorly characterized. This study aims to characterize T2 values of the noninfarcted myocardium (NIM) and surrounding tissue and to investigate prognostic relevance of higher NIM T2 values after STEMI. A total of 171 consecutive patients with STEMI without prior cardiovascular events who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance after primary percutaneous coronary intervention were analyzed in terms of standard infarct characteristics. Edema of the NIM, liver, spleen, and pectoralis muscle was assessed based on T2 mapping. Follow-up was available for 130 patients. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac events (MACE), defined as cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, unplanned coronary revascularization or rehospitalization for heart failure. The median time from primary percutaneous coronary intervention to cardiac magnetic resonance was 3 days (IQR: 2-5 days). Higher (above the median value of 45 ms) T2 values in the NIM area were associated with larger infarct size, microvascular obstruction, and left ventricular dysfunction and did not correlate with C-reactive protein, white blood cells, or T2 values of the pectoralis muscle, liver, and spleen. At a median follow-up of 17 months, patients with higher (>45 ms) NIM T2 values had increased risk of MACE (P < 0.001) compared with subjects with NIM T2 values ≤45 ms, mainly caused by a higher rate of myocardial reinfarction (26.3% vs 1.4%; P < 0.001). At multivariable analysis, higher NIM T2 values independently predicted MACE (HR: 2.824 [95% CI: 1.254-6.361]; P = 0.012). We examine the algebra of all Dirichlet Series bounded on the right half plane. We consider the analogue of the Corona theorem in this setting, and show that it is false, i.e. the right half-plane is not dense in the maximal ideal space. After providing a linking construction for hyperconvex spaces, we show that the four-point property is inherited by the hyperconvex hull, which leads to the theorem that every complete metric tree is hyperconvex. Abstract

The aim of the article is to investigate the relative dispersion properties of the Well Mixed class of Lagrangian Stochastic Models. Dimensional analysis shows that given a model in the class, its properties depend solely on a non-dimensional parameter, which measures the relative weight of Lagrangian-to-Eulerian scales. This parameter is formulated in terms of Kolmogorov constants, and model properties are then studied by modifying its value in a range that contains the experimental variability. Large variations are found for the quantity $g^*=2gC_0^{-1}$, where $g$ is the Richardson constant, and for the duration of the $t^3$ regime. Asymptotic analysis of model behaviour clarifies some inconsistencies in the literature and excludes the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process from being considered a reliable model for relative dispersion., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, LaTeX source

Abstract

The properties of mesoscale Lagrangian turbulence in the Adriatic Sea are studied from a drifter data set spanning 1990-1999, focusing on the role of inhomogeneity and nonstationarity. A preliminary study is performed on the dependence of the turbulent velocity statistics on bin averaging, and a preferential bin scale of 0.25 is chosen. Comparison with independent estimates obtained using an optimized spline technique confirms this choice. Three main regions are identified where the velocity statistics are approximately homogeneous: the two boundary currents, West (East) Adriatic Current, WAC (EAC), and the southern central gyre, CG. The CG region is found to be characterized by symmetric probability density function of velocity, approximately exponential autocorrelations and well defined integral quantities such as di usivity and time scale. The boundary regions, instead, are significantly asymmetric with skewness indicating preferential events in the direction of the mean flow. The autocorrelation in the along mean flow direction is characterized by two time scales, with a secondary exponential with slow decay time of 11-12 days particularly evident in the EAC region. Seasonal partitioning of the data shows that this secondary scale is especially prominent in the summer-fall season. Possible physical explanations for the secondary scale are discussed in terms of low frequency fluctuations of forcings and in terms of mean flow curvature inducing fluctuations in the particle trajectories.
