An empirical model is presented that links the demographics of AGN to their ensemble X-ray variability properties. Observations on the incidence of AGN in galaxies are combined with (i) models of the Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of the flux variations of AGN and (ii) parameterisations of the black-hole mass vs stellar-mass scaling relation, to predict the mean excess variance of active black-hole populations in cosmological volumes. We show that the comparison of the model with observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance as a function of X-ray luminosity provides a handle on both the PSD models and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation. We find strong evidence against a PSD model that is described by a broken power-law and a constant overall normalisation. Instead our analysis indicates that the amplitude of the PSD depends on the physical properties of the accretion events, such as the Eddington ratio and/or the black hole mass. We also find that current observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance are consistent with the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation of local spheroids based on dynamically determined black-hole masses. We also discuss future prospects of the proposed approach to jointly constrain the PSD of AGN and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation as a function of redshift. At ~50 Mpc, the Hydra I cluster of galaxies is among the closest cluster in the z=0 Universe, and an ideal environment to study dwarf galaxy properties in a cluster environment. We exploit deep imaging data of the Hydra I cluster to construct a new photometric catalog of dwarf galaxies in the cluster core, which is then used to derive properties of the Hydra I cluster dwarf galaxies population as well as to compare with other clusters. Moreover, we investigate the dependency of dwarf galaxy properties on their surrounding environment. This contribution is focused on a translation of the first two chapters of Hanlongjing 撼龍經, one of the fengshui classical texts belonging to the School of Forms, attributed to Yang Yunsong and dating back to the 10th century. The first part of this short study tries to shed some light on some interesting features of this source: the notion of dragon qi 氣 veins shaping on large scale the topography of China, and defining on little scale the fengshui nature of a site; and the correspondence between mountainous reliefs forms and the stars of Ursa Maior’s Northern Dipper (Beidou 北斗).

With their emission mainly coming from a relativistic jet pointing towards us, blazars are fundamental sources to study extragalactic jets and their central engines, consisting of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) fed by accretion discs. They are also candidate sources of high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays. Because of the jet orientation, the non-thermal blazar emission is Doppler beamed; its variability is unpredictable and occurs on time-scales from less than one hour to years. The comprehension of the diverse mechanisms producing the flux and spectral changes requires well-sampled multiband light curves on long time periods. In particular, outbursts are the best test bench to shed light on the underlying physics, especially when studied in a multiwavelength context. The Vera C. Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time (Rubin-LSST) will monitor the southern sky for ten years in six photometric bands, offering a formidable tool to study blazar variability features in a statistical way. The alert system will allow us to trigger follow-up observations of outstanding events, especially at high (keV-to-GeV) and very high (TeV) energies. We here examine the simulated Rubin-LSST survey strategies with the aim of understanding which cadences are more suitable for the blazar variability science. Our metrics include light curve and colour sampling. The W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 fields will be two of the LSST Deep Drilling fields, but the availability of spectroscopic redshifts within these two fields is still limited on deg^2 scales. To prepare for future science, we use EAZY to estimate photometric redshifts (photo-zs) in these two fields based on forced-photometry catalogs. Our photo-z catalog consists of ~0.8 million sources covering 4.9 deg^2 in W-CDF-S and ~0.8 million sources covering 3.4 deg^2 in ELAIS-S1, among which there are ~0.6 (W-CDF-S) and ~0.4 (ELAIS-S1) million sources having signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) > 5 detections in more than 5 bands. By comparing photo-zs and available spectroscopic redshifts, we demonstrate the general reliability of our photo-z measurements. We present three new Chandra X-ray epochs along with new ground-based optical-UV observations as the third installment in a time-series analysis of four high-redshift ($z\sim4.1-4.4$) radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). In total, we present nine epochs for these sources with rest-frame temporal baselines of $\sim1300-2000$ days. We utilize the X-ray data to determine basic variability properties, as well as produce mean spectra and stacked images based on effective exposure times of $\sim40-70$ ks per source. We perform time-series analyses in the soft and hard bands, separately, and compare variability properties to those of sources at lower redshifts and luminosities. The magnitude of X-ray variability of our sources remains consistent with or lower than that of similar sources at lower redshifts, in agreement with the variability-luminosity anti-correlation. The mean power-law photon indices in the stacked Chandra spectra of our sources are consistent with the values measured from their archival XMM-Newton spectra separated by about three years in the rest frame. Along with the X-ray observations we provide near-simultaneous optical monitoring of the sources in the optical-UV regime. The overall variability in the optical-to-X-ray spectral slope is consistent with sources at lower redshifts and the optical-UV observations display mild variability on monthly timescales., 24 pages (AASTeX631), 9 figures. Context. In this paper, we present ultra-deep images of the compact group of galaxies HCG 86 as part of the VEGAS survey. Aims. Our main goals are to estimate the amount of intra-group light (IGL) as well as to study the light and colour distributions in order to address the main formation process of the IGL component in groups of galaxies. Methods. We derived the azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles in the g, r, and i bands with g − r and r − i average colours and colour profiles for all group members. By fitting the light distribution, we extrapolated the contribution of the stellar halos plus the diffuse light from the brightest component of each galaxy. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. Results. The long integration time and wide area covered make our data reach deeper than previous literature studies of the IGL in compact groups of galaxies and allow us to produce an extended (∼160 kpc) map of the IGL, down to a surface brightness level of ∼30 mag arcsec−2 in the g band. The IGL in HCG 86 is mainly in diffuse form and has average colours of g − r ∼ 0.8 mag and r − i ∼ 0.4 mag. The fraction of IGL in HCG 86 is ∼16% of the total luminosity of the group, and this is consistent with estimates available for other compact groups and loose groups of galaxies of similar virial masses. A weak trend is present between the amount of IGL and the early-type to late-type galaxy ratio. A lack of a clear correlation is found between the amount of diffuse light and the cluster or group virial mass. Conclusions. By comparing the IGL fraction and colours with those predicted by simulations, the amount of IGL in HCG 86 would be the result of the disruption of satellites at an epoch of z ∼ 0.4. At this redshift, the observed colours are consistent with the scenario where the main contribution to the mass of the IGL comes from the intermediate-to-massive galaxies (1010 ≤ M* ≤ 1011 M⊙).

The ELAIS-S1 field will be an LSST Deep Drilling field, and it also has extensive multiwavelength coverage. To improve the utility of the existing data, we use The Tractor to perform forced-photometry measurements in this field. We compile data in 16 bands from the DeepDrill, VIDEO, DES, ESIS, and VOICE surveys. Using a priori information from the high-resolution fiducial images in VIDEO, we model the images in other bands and generate a forced-photometry catalog. This technique enables consistency throughout different surveys, deblends sources from low-resolution images, extends photometric measurements to a fainter magnitude regime, and improves photometric-redshift estimates. The survey of the COSMOS field by the VLT Survey Telescope is an appealing testing ground for variability studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN). With 54 r-band visits over 3.3 yr and a single-visit depth of 24.6 r-band mag, the dataset is also particularly interesting in the context of performance forecasting for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). This work is the fifth in a series dedicated to the development of an automated, robust, and efficient methodology to identify optically variable AGN, aimed at deploying it on future LSST data. We test the performance of a random forest (RF) algorithm in selecting optically variable AGN candidates, investigating how the use of different AGN labeled sets (LSs) and features sets affects this performance. We define a heterogeneous AGN LS and choose a set of variability features and optical and near-infrared colors based on what can be extracted from LSST data. We find that an AGN LS that includes only Type I sources allows for the selection of a highly pure (91%) sample of AGN candidates, obtaining a completeness with respect to spectroscopically confirmed AGN of 69% (vs. 59% in our previous work). The addition of colors to variability features mildly improves the performance of the RF classifier, while colors alone prove less effective than variability in selecting AGN as they return contaminated samples of candidates and fail to identify most host-dominated AGN. We observe that a bright (r < 21 mag) AGN LS is able to retrieve candidate samples not affected by the magnitude cut, which is of great importance as faint AGN LSs for LSST-related studies will be hard to find and likely imbalanced. The Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) is an ongoing high-completeness, deep spectroscopic survey of $\sim$60,000 galaxies to Y$, Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

Most of the variability studies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are based on ensemble analyses. Nevertheless, it is interesting to provide estimates of the individual variability properties of each AGN, in order to relate them with intrinsic physical quantities. A useful dataset is provided by the Catalina Surveys Data Release 2 (CSDR2), which encompasses almost a decade of photometric measurements of $\sim500$ million objects repeatedly observed hundreds of times. We aim to investigate the individual optical variability properties of 795 AGNs originally included in the Multi-Epoch XMM Serendipitous AGN Sample 2 (MEXSAS2). Our goals consist in: (i) searching for correlations between variability and AGN physical quantities; (ii) extending our knowledge of the variability features of MEXSAS2 from the X-ray to the optical. We use the structure function (SF) to analyse AGN flux variations. We model the SF as a power-law, $\text{SF}(\tau)=A\,(\tau/\tau_0)^\gamma$, and we compute its variability parameters. We introduce the V-correction as a simple tool to correctly quantify the amount of variability in the rest frame of each source. We find a significant decrease of variability amplitude with increasing bolometric, optical and X-ray luminosity. We obtain the indication of an intrinsically weak positive correlation between variability amplitude and redshift, $z$. Variability amplitude is also positively correlated with $\alpha_\text{ox}$. The slope of the SF, $\gamma$, is weakly correlated with the bolometric luminosity $L_\text{bol}$ and/or with the black hole mass $M_\text{BH}$. When comparing optical to X-ray variability properties, we find that X-ray variability amplitude is approximately the same for those AGNs with larger or smaller variability amplitude in the optical. We present the study of the south-west group in the Fornax cluster centred on the brightest group galaxy (BGG) Fornax A, observed as part of the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS). This includes the analysis of the bright group members (mB < 16 mag) and the intra-group light (IGL). The main objective of this work is to investigate the assembly history of the Fornax A group and to compare its physical quantities as a function of the environment to that of the Fornax cluster core. For all galaxies, we extract the azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles in three optical bands (g, r, i) by modelling the galaxy's isophotes. We derive their colour profiles and structural parameters in all respective bands. The long integration time and large covered area of the FDS allow us to also estimate the amount of IGL. The majority of galaxies in the Fornax A group are late-type galaxies (LTGs), spanning a range of stellar mass of $8 < log (M_* M_{\odot}) < 10.5$. Six out of nine LTGs show a Type III (up-bending) break in their light profiles, which is either suggestive of strangulation halting star-formation in their outskirts or their HI-richness causing enhanced star-formation in their outer-discs. The estimated luminosity of the IGL is $6 \pm 2 \times 10^{10} L_{\odot}$ in g-band, which corresponds to about 16% of the total light in the group. The Fornax A group appears to be in an early stage of assembly with respect to the cluster core. The environment of the Fornax A group is not as dense as that of the cluster core, with all galaxies except the BGG showing similar morphology, comparable colours and stellar masses, and Type III disc-breaks, without any clear trend of these properties with group-centric distances. The main contribution to the IGL is from the minor merging in the outskirts of the BGG NGC1316 and, probably, the disrupted dwarf galaxies close to the group centre., Published in A&A. In this paper we report on the discovery of 27 low-surface brightness galaxies, of which 12 are candidate ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) in the Hydra I cluster, based on deep observations taken as part of the VST Early-type Galaxy Survey (VEGAS). This first sample of UDG candidates in the Hydra I cluster represents an important step in our project that aims to enlarge the number of confirmed UDGs and, through study of statistically relevant samples, constrain the nature and formation of UDGs. This study presents the main properties of this class of galaxies in the Hydra I cluster. For all UDGs, we analyse the light and colour distribution, and provide a census of the globular cluster (GC) systems around them. Given the limitations of a reliable GC selection based on two relatively close optical bands only, we find that half of the UDG candidates have a total GC population consistent with zero. Of the other half, two galaxies have a total population larger than zero at 2$\sigma$ level. We estimate the stellar mass, the total number of GCs and the GC specific frequency ($S_N$). Most of the candidates span a range of stellar masses of $10^7-10^8$~M$_{\odot}$. Based on the GC population of these newly discovered UDGs, we conclude that most of these galaxies have a standard or low dark matter content, with a halo mass of $\leq 10^{10}$~M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

This paper continues the series of the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS). Following the previous studies dedicated to extended Fornax cluster members, we present the catalogs of compact stellar systems in the Fornax cluster as well as extended background sources and point-like sources. We derive ugri photometry of ~1.7 million sources over the $\sim$21 sq. degree area of FDS centered on NGC1399. For a wider area, of $\sim$27 sq. degs extending in the direction of NGC1316, we provide gri data for ~3.1 million sources. To improve the morphological characterization of sources we generate multi-band image stacks by coadding the best seeing gri-band single exposures with a cut at FWHM, 25 pages, 18 figures, A&A accepted, tables 3-6 available on line

This work is based on deep multi-band (g, r, i) data from the Fornax Deep Survey with VST. We analyse the surface brightness profiles of the 19 bright ETGs inside the virial radius of the Fornax cluster. The main aim of this work is to identify signatures of accretion onto galaxies by studying the presence of outer stellar halos, and understand their nature and occurrence. Our analysis also provides a new and accurate estimate of the intra-cluster light inside the virial radius of Fornax. We performed multi-component fits to the azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles available for all sample galaxies. This allows to quantify the relative weight of all components in the galaxy structure that contribute to the total light. In addition, we derived the average g-i colours in each component identified by the fit, as well as the azimuthally averaged g-i colour profiles, to correlate them with the stellar mass of each galaxy and the location inside the cluster. We find that in the most massive and reddest ETGs the fraction of light in, probably accreted, halos is much larger than in the other galaxies. Less-massive galaxies have an accreted mass fraction lower than 30%, bluer colours and reside in the low-density regions of the cluster. Inside the virial radius of the cluster, the total luminosity of the intra-cluster light, compared with the total luminosity of all cluster members, is about 34%. Inside the Fornax cluster there is a clear correlation between the amount of accreted material in the stellar halos of galaxies and the density of the environment in which those galaxies reside. By comparing this quantity with theoretical predictions and previous observational estimates, there is a clear indication that the driving factor for the accretion process is the total stellar mass of the galaxy, in agreement with the hierarchical accretion scenario., 18 pages, 10 figures. We present the largest and most spatially extended planetary nebulae (PNe) catalog ever obtained for the Fornax cluster. We measured velocities of 1452 PNe out to 200 kpc in the cluster core using a counter-dispersed slitless spectroscopic technique with data from FORS2 on the VLT. With such extended spatial coverage, we can study separately the stellar halos of some of the cluster main galaxies and the intracluster light. In this second paper of the Fornax Cluster VLT Spectroscopic Survey (FVSS), we identify and classify the emission-line sources, describe the method to select PNe and calculate their coordinates and velocities from the dispersed slitless images. From the PN 2D velocity map we identify stellar streams that are possibly tracing the gravitational interaction of NGC1399 with NGC1404 and NGC1387. We also present the velocity dispersion profile out to $\sim 200$ kpc radii, which shows signatures of a superposition of the bright central galaxy and the cluster potential, with the latter clearly dominating the regions outside R $\sim 1000$" ($\sim 100$ kpc)., 13 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, companion paper FVSS-I (Pota et al, 2018, submitted)

The Fornax cluster provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate in detail the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies in a dense environment. We aim at kinematically characterizing photometrically detected globular cluster (GC) candidates in the core of the cluster. We used the VLT/VIMOS spectroscopic data from the FVSS survey in the Fornax cluster, covering one square degree around the central massive galaxy NGC 1399. We confirmed a total of 777 GCs, almost doubling the previously detected GCs, using the same dataset by Pota et al. (2018). Combined with previous literature radial velocity measurements of GCs in Fornax, we compiled the most extensive spectroscopic GC sample of 2341 objects in this environment. We found that red GCs are mostly concentrated around major galaxies, while blue GCs are kinematically irregular and are widely spread throughout the core region of the cluster. The velocity dispersion profiles of blue and red GCs show a quite distinct behaviour. Blue GCs exhibit a sharp increase in the velocity dispersion profile from 250 to 400km/s within 5 arcminutes (29 kpc/1 reff of NGC 1399) from the central galaxy. The velocity dispersion profile of red GCs follows a constant value in between 200-300km/s until 8 arcminutes (46 kpc/1.6reff), and then rises to 350km/s at 10 arcminutes (58 kpc/2 reff). Beyond 10 arcminutes and out to 40 arcminutes (230 kpc/8 reff), blue and red GCs show a constant velocity dispersion of 300+/-50km/s, indicating that both GC populations are tracing the cluster potential. We have kinematically confirmed and characterized the previously photometrically discovered overdensities of intra-cluster GCs. We investigate the population of high-redshift ($3\leq z < 6$) AGN selected in the two deepest X-ray surveys, the 7 Ms \textit{Chandra} Deep Field-South and 2 Ms \textit{Chandra} Deep Field-North. Their outstanding sensitivity and spectral characterization of faint sources allow us to focus on the sub-$L_*$ regime (log$L_{\mathrm{X}}\lesssim44$), poorly sampled by previous works using shallower data, and the obscured population. Taking fully into account the individual photometric-redshift probability distribution functions, the final sample consists of $\approx102$ X-ray selected AGN at $3\leq z < 6$. The fraction of AGN obscured by column densities log$N_{\mathrm{H}}>23$ is $\sim0.6-0.8$, once incompleteness effects are taken into account, with no strong dependence on redshift or luminosity. We derived the high-redshift AGN number counts down to $F_{\mathrm{0.5-2\,keV}}=7\times10^{-18}\,\mathrm{erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, extending previous results to fainter fluxes, especially at $z>4$. We put the tightest constraints to date on the low-luminosity end of AGN luminosity function at high redshift. The space-density, in particular, declines at $z>3$ at all luminosities, with only a marginally steeper slope for low-luminosity AGN. By comparing the evolution of the AGN and galaxy densities, we suggest that such a decline at high luminosities is mainly driven by the underlying galaxy population, while at low luminosities there are hints of an intrinsic evolution of the parameters driving nuclear activity. We study the X-ray variability properties of distant AGNs in the Chandra Deep Field-South region over 17 years, up to $z\sim 4$, and compare them with those predicted by models based on local samples. We use the results of Monte Carlo simulations to account for the biases introduced by the discontinuous sampling and the low-count regime. We confirm that variability is an ubiquitous property of AGNs, with no clear dependence on the density of the environment. The variability properties of high-z AGNs, over different temporal timescales, are most consistent with a Power Spectral Density (PSD) described by a broken (or bending) power-law, similar to nearby AGNs. We confirm the presence of an anti-correlation between luminosity and variability, resulting from the dependence of variability on BH mass and accretion rate. We explore different models, finding that our acceptable solutions predict that BH mass influences the value of the PSD break frequency, while the Eddington ratio $\lambda_{Edd}$ affects the PSD break frequency and, possibly, the PSD amplitude as well. We derive the evolution of the average $\lambda_{Edd}$ as a function of redshift, finding results in agreement with measurements based on different estimators. The large statistical uncertainties make our results consistent with a constant Eddington ratio, although one of our models suggest a possible increase of $\lambda_{Edd}$ with lookback time up to $z\sim 2-3$. Over the last few decades, exhaustive surveys of extra Galactic globular clusters (EGGCs) have become feasible. Only recently, kinematical information of globular clusters (GCs) were available through Gaia DR2 spectroscopy and also proper motions. On the other hand, simulations of GCs can provide detailed information about the dynamical evolution of the system. We present a preliminary study of EGGCs' properties for different dynamical evolutionary stages. We apply this study to 12 Gyr-old GCs simulated as part of the MOCCA Survey Database. Mimicking observational limits, we consider only a subssample of the models in the database, showing that it is possible to represent observed Galactic GCs. In order to distinguish between different dynamical states of EGGCs, at least three structural parameters are necessary. The best distinction is achieved by considering the central parameters, those being observational core radius, central surface brightness, ratio between central and half-mass velocity dispersion, or similarly considering the central color, the central V magnitude and the ratio between central and half-mass radius velocity dispersion, although such properties could be prohibitive with current technologies. A similar but less solid result is obtained considering the average properties at the half-light radius, perhaps accessible presently in the Local Group. Additionally, we mention that the color spread in EGGCs due to internal dynamical models, at fixed metallcity, could be just as important due to the spread in metallicity., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

This is an erratum for the paper “The Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) with VST VI. Optical properties of the dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster”. We noticed two mistakes in Fig. 21 of the original paper that have a slight effect on the shown ram pressure stripping radii, but do not change conclusions of that figure. In addition, in the original paper, we had calculated cluster-centric distances of objects incorrectly in some parts of our analysis, which slightly affects the appearance of several figures in the original paper. We show here the corrected versions of all the figures that were affected by this mistake. In this Letter, we use original numbering of the figures to avoid confusion. The conclusions and findings of the original paper are not altered by these mistakes. The first mistake in Fig. 21 of the original paper is that wrong velocities were used when estimating the stripping radii of the ram pressure stripping. This error was caused due to the first author’s experiments of how the different cluster-centric velocities of the infalling galaxy affect the stripping radii. The results of these tests were mistakenly saved to the figure that appears in the published version. In the left panel of Fig. 21, we show the ram pressure stripping radii when using those velocities stated in the original text and legend. (Figure Presented).

The VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 Fields (VOICE) Survey, in synergy with the SUDARE survey, is a deep optical $ugri$ imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields using the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). The observations for the CDFS field comprise about 4.38 deg$^2$ down to $r\sim26$ mag. The total on-sky time spans over four years in this field, distributed over four adjacent sub-fields. In this paper, we use the multi-epoch $r$-band imaging data to measure the variability of the detected objects and search for transients. We perform careful astrometric and photometric calibrations and point spread function (PSF) modeling. A new method, referring to as differential running-average photometry, is proposed to measure the light curves of the detected objects. With the method, the difference of PSFs between different epochs can be reduced, and the background fluctuations are also suppressed. Detailed uncertainty analysis and detrending corrections on the light curves are performed. We visually inspect the light curves to select variable objects, and present some objects with interesting light curves. Context. We present the COld STream finder Algorithm (COSTA), a novel algorithm used to search for cold kinematical substructures in the phase space of planetary nebulae (PNe) and globular clusters (GCs) in the halos of massive galaxies and intracluster regions. Aims. The aim of COSTA is to detect small, low-velocity-dispersion streams, such as the ones produced in recent interactions of dwarf galaxies with the halos of more massive galaxies, including the ones sitting in the central regions of rich galaxy clusters. Methods. We based COSTA on a deep friend-of-friend procedure that isolates groups of N particles with low velocity dispersion (between 10 km s−1 and ∼100 km s−1) using an iterative (n) sigma-clipping on a defined number of (k) neighbor particles. The algorithm has three parameters (k − n − N), plus a velocity dispersion cut-off that defines the “coldness” of the stream, which are set using Monte Carlo realizations of the sample in question. Results. In this paper, we show the ability of COSTA to recover simulated streams on mock datasets of discrete kinematical tracers of different sizes and measurement errors, from publicly available hydrodynamical simulations. We also show the best algorithm setup for realistically locating streams in the core of the Fornax cluster, for future applications of COSTA to real populations of PNe and GCs. Conclusions. Finally, COSTA can be adapted to many situations in finding small substructures in the phase space of a limited sample of discrete tracers, provided that the algorithm is trained on realistic mock observations reproducing the specific dataset under examination.

arXiv:2004.07604v2, We present the X-ray spectra of 185 bright sources detected in the XMM-Newton deep survey of the Chandra Deep Field South with the three EPIC cameras combined. The 2–10 keV flux limit of the sample is 2 × 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2. The sources are distributed over a redshift range of z = 0.1−3.8, with 11 new X-ray redshift measurements included. A spectral analysis was performed using a simple model to obtain absorbing column densities, rest-frame 2–10 keV luminosities, and Fe K line properties of 180 sources at z > 0.4. Obscured AGN are found to be more abundant toward higher redshifts. Using the XMM-Newton data alone, seven Compton-thick AGN candidates were identified, which set the Compton-thick AGN fraction at ≃4%. An exploratory spectral inspection method with two rest-frame X-ray colours and an Fe line strength indicator was introduced and tested against the results from spectral fitting. This method works reasonably well to characterise a spectral shape and can be useful for a pre-selection of Compton-thick AGN candidates. We found six objects exhibiting broad Fe K lines out of 21 unobscured AGN of best data quality, implying a detection rate of ∼30%. Five redshift spikes, each with more than six sources, are identified in the redshift distribution of the X-ray sources. Contrary to the overall trend, the sources at the two higher redshift spikes, at z = 1.61 and z = 2.57, exhibit a puzzlingly low obscuration., We acknowledge financial contribution from the agreement ASI-INAF n.2017-14-H.O. In the last years, Astroinformatics has become a well defined paradigm for many fields of Astronomy. In this work we demonstrate the potential of a multidisciplinary approach to identify globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax cluster of galaxies taking advantage of multi-band photometry produced by the VLT Survey Telescope using automatic self-adaptive methodologies. The data analyzed in this work consist of deep, multi-band, partially overlapping images centered on the core of the Fornax cluster. In this work we use a Neural-Gas model, a pure clustering machine learning methodology, to approach the GC detection, while a novel feature selection method ($\Phi$LAB) is exploited to perform the parameter space analysis and optimization. We demonstrate that the use of an Astroinformatics based methodology is able to provide GC samples that are comparable, in terms of purity and completeness with those obtained using single band HST data (Brescia et al. 2012) and two approaches based respectively on a morpho-photometric (Cantiello et al. 2018b) and a PCA analysis (D'Abrusco et al. 2015) using the same data discussed in this work., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures

The Fornax Deep Survey Dwarf galaxy Catalog (FDSDC) includes 564 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster and the in-falling Fornax A subgroup. We use the FDSDC galaxies for statistical analysis of the structural and stellar population differences in the range of galactic environments within the Fornax cluster. We present the standard scaling relations for the dwarfs and analyze trends as a function of cluster-centric radius. We find a different behavior for the bright dwarfs (-18.5 mag < M$_r$ < -16 mag) as compared to the fainter ones (M$_r$ > -16 mag): While considering galaxies in the same magnitude-bins, we find that, while for fainter dwarfs the g'-r' color is redder for lower surface brightness objects (as expected from fading stellar populations), for brighter dwarfs the color is redder for the higher surface brightness and higher S��rsic n objects. The trend of the bright dwarfs might be explained by those galaxies being affected by harassment and by slower quenching of star formation in their inner parts. As the fraction of early-type dwarfs with respect to late-types increases toward the central parts of the cluster, the color-surface brightness trends are also manifested in the cluster-centric trends, confirming that it is indeed the environment that changes the galaxies. We also estimate the strengths of the ram-pressure stripping, tidal disruption, and harassment in the Fornax cluster, and find that our observations are consistent with the theoretically expected ranges of galaxy properties where each of those mechanisms dominate. We furthermore find that the luminosity function, color-magnitude relation, and axis-ratio distribution of the dwarfs in the center of the Fornax cluster are similar to those in the center of the Virgo cluster., Accepted to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The VEGAS imaging survey of the Hydra I cluster reveals an extended network of stellar filaments to the south-west of the spiral galaxy NGC3314A. Within these filaments, at a projected distance of ~40 kpc from the galaxy, we discover an ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) with a central surface brightness of $\mu_{0,g}\sim26$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and effective radius $R_e\sim3.8$ kpc. This UDG, named UDG32, is one of the faintest and most diffuse low-surface brightness galaxies in the Hydra~I cluster. Based on the available data, we cannot exclude that this object is just seen in projection on top of the stellar filaments, thus being instead a foreground or background UDG in the cluster. However, the clear spatial coincidence of UDG32 with the stellar filaments of NGC3314A suggests that it might have formed from the material in the filaments, becoming a detached, gravitationally bound system. In this scenario, the origin of UDG32 depends on the nature of the stellar filaments in NGC3314A, which is still unknown. They could result from ram-pressure stripping or have a tidal origin. In this letter, we focus on the comparison of the observed properties of the stellar filaments and UDG32, and speculate about their possible origin. The relatively red color ($g-r=0.54 \pm 0.14$~mag) of the UDG, similar to that of the disk in NGC3314A, combined with an age older than 1Gyr, and the possible presence of a few compact stellar systems, all point towards a tidal formation scenario inferred for the UDG32., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letter

We present a new catalogue of ~2,400 optically selected quasars with spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray observations from either Chandra or XMM-Newton. The sample can be used to investigate the non-linear relation between the UV and X-ray luminosity of quasars, and to build a Hubble diagram up to redshift z~7.5. We selected sources that are neither reddened by dust in the optical/UV nor obscured by gas in the X-rays, and whose X-ray fluxes are free from flux-limit related biases. After checking for any possible systematics, we confirm, in agreement with our previous works, that (i) the X-ray to UV relation provides distance estimates matching those from supernovae up to z~1.5, and (ii) its slope shows no redshift evolution up to z~5. We provide a full description of the methodology for testing cosmological models, further supporting a trend whereby the Hubble diagram of quasars is well reproduced by the standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model up to z~1.5-2, but strong deviations emerge at higher redshifts. Since we have minimized all non-negligible systematic effects, and proven the stability of the $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ relation at high redshifts, we conclude that an evolution of the expansion rate of the Universe should be considered as a possible explanation for the observed deviation, rather than some systematic (redshift-dependent) effect associated with high-redshift quasars., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

This paper is based on the multi-band (ugri) Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). We study bright early-type galaxies (m_B 28 mag/arcsec^2). Therefore, the new FDS data allow us to explore in great detail the morphology and structure of cluster galaxies out to the region of the stellar halo. The observations suggest that the Fornax cluster is not completely relaxed inside the virial radius. The bulk of the gravitational interactions between galaxies happens in the W-NW core region of the cluster, where most of the bright early-type galaxies are located and where the intra-cluster baryons (diffuse light and GCs) are found. We suggest that the W-NW sub-clump of galaxies results from an infalling group onto the cluster, which has modified the structure of the galaxy outskirts (making asymmetric stellar halos) and has produced the intra-cluster baryons (ICL and GCs), concentrated in this region of the cluster., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. The halo masses $M_{halo}$ of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are critical measurements for understanding their formation processes. One promising method to estimate a galaxy's $M_{halo}$ is to exploit the empirical scaling relation between $M_{halo}$ and the number of associated globular clusters ($N_{\mathrm{GC}}$). We use a Bayesian mixture model approach to measure $N_{\mathrm{GC}}$ for 175 LSB ($23\leq\left\langle \mu_{e,r} \right\rangle [\mathrm{mag\ arcsec}^{-2}]\leq 28$) galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) data; this is the largest sample of low mass galaxies so-far analysed for this kind of study. The proximity of the Fornax cluster means that we can measure galaxies with much smaller physical sizes ($0.3\leq r_{e,r}\ [\mathrm{kpc}]\leq 9.5$) compared to previous studies of the GC systems of LSB galaxies, probing stellar masses down to $M_{*}\sim10^{5}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. The sample also includes \nudg\ ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), with projected $r$-band half-light radii greater than 1.5 kpc. Our results are consistent with an extrapolation of the $M_{*}-M_{halo}$ relation predicted from abundance matching. In particular, our UDG measurements are consistent with dwarf sized halos, having typical masses between $10^{10}$ and $10^{11}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. Overall, our UDG sample is statistically indistinguishable from smaller LSB galaxies in the same magnitude range. We do not find any candidates likely to be as rich as some of those found in the Coma cluster. In the current framework, the standard parametrization of our Universe is the so-called Lambda Cold Dark Matter ({\Lambda}CDM) model. Recently, Risaliti & Lusso (2019) have shown a ~4{\sigma} tension with the {\Lambda}CDM model through a model-independent parametrization of a Hubble Diagram of supernovae Ia (SNe Ia) from the JLA survey and quasars. Model-independent approaches and independent samples over a wide redshift range are key to testing this tension and any possible systematics. Here we present an analysis of a combined Hubble Diagram of SNe Ia, quasars, and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to check the agreement of the quasar and GRB cosmological parameters at high redshifts (z>2) and to test the concordance flat {\Lambda}CDM model with improved statistical accuracy. We build a Hubble diagram with SNe Ia from the Pantheon sample (Scolnic et al. 2018), quasars from the Risaliti & Lusso (2019) sample, and GRBs from the Demianski et al. (2017a) sample, where quasars are standardised through the observed non-linear relation between their ultraviolet and X-ray emission and GRBs through the correlation between the spectral peak energy and the isotropic-equivalent radiated energy (the so-called "Amati relation"). We fit the data with cosmographic models consisting of a fourth-order logarithmic polynomial and a fifth-order linear polynomial, and compare the results with the expectations from a flat {\Lambda}CDM model. We confirm the tension between the best fit cosmographic parameters and the {\Lambda}CDM model at ~4{\sigma} with SNe Ia and quasars, at ~2{\sigma} with SNe Ia and GRBs, and at >4{\sigma} with the whole SNe Ia+quasars+GRB data set. The completely independent high-redshift Hubble diagrams of quasars and GRBs are fully consistent with each other, strongly suggesting that the deviation from the standard model is not due to unknown systematic effects but to new physics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, amended typos in equations 7 and 8

We present a catalog of 47 wide-angle tailed radio galaxies (WATs), the WATCAT, mainly built including a radio morphological classification; WATs were selected by combining observations from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory/Very Large Array Sky Survey (NVSS), the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST), and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We included in the catalog only radio sources showing two-sided jets with two clear “warmspots” (i.e., jet knots as bright as 20% of the nucleus) lying on the opposite side of the radio core, and having classical extended emission resembling a plume beyond them. The catalog is limited to redshifts z ≤ 0.15, and lists only sources with radio emission extended beyond 30 kpc from the host galaxy. We found that host galaxies of WATCAT sources are all luminous (−20.5 ≳ Mr ≳ −23.7), red early-type galaxies with black hole masses in the range 108 ≲ MBH ≲ 109 M⊙. The spectroscopic classification indicates that they are all low-excitation galaxies (LEGs). Comparing WAT multifrequency properties with those of FR I and FR II radio galaxies at the same redshifts, we conclude that WATs show multifrequency properties remarkably similar to FR I radio galaxies, having radio power of typical FR IIs.

Context. The analysis of the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at different wavelengths and the study of possible correlations of different spectral windows are a current main field of inquiry. Optical variability has been largely used to identify AGN in multivisit surveys. The strength of a selection based on optical variability lies in the opportunity of analyzing data from surveys of large sky areas by ground-based telescopes. However, the effectiveness of optical variability selection with respect to other multiwavelength techniques has been poorly studied down to the depth that is expected from next-generation surveys. Aims: Here we present the results of our r-band analysis of a sample of 299 optically variable AGN candidates in the VST survey of the COSMOS field, counting 54 visits spread over three observing seasons spanning more than three years. This dataset is more than three times larger than the dataset presented in our previous analysis, and the observing baseline is about eight times longer. Methods: We push toward deeper magnitudes (r(AB) ∼ 23.5 mag) than were reached in past studies. We made wide use of ancillary multiwavelength catalogs in order to confirm the nature of our AGN candidates, and constrained the accuracy of the method based on spectroscopic and photometric diagnostics. We also performed tests aimed at assessing the relevance of dense sampling in view of future wide-field surveys. Results: We demonstrate that the method allows the selection of high-purity (> 86%) samples. We take advantage of the longer observing baseline to achieve great improvement in the completeness of our sample with respect to X-ray and spectroscopically confirmed samples of AGN (59% vs. ∼15% in our previous work), as well as in the completeness of unobscured and obscured AGN. The effectiveness of the method confirms the importance of developing future more refined techniques for the automated analysis of larger datasets. We present an X-ray point-source catalog from the XMM-Large Scale Structure survey region (XMM-LSS), one of the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) fields. We target the XMM-LSS region with $1.3$ Ms of new XMM-Newton AO-15 observations, transforming the archival X-ray coverage in this region into a 5.3 deg$^2$ contiguous field with uniform X-ray coverage totaling $2.7$ Ms of flare-filtered exposure, with a $46$ ks median PN exposure time. We provide an X-ray catalog of 5242 sources detected in the soft (0.5-2 keV), hard (2-10 keV), and/or full (0.5-10 keV) bands with a 1% expected spurious fraction determined from simulations. A total of 2381 new X-ray sources are detected compared to previous source catalogs in the same area. Our survey has flux limits of $1.7\times10^{-15}$, $1.3\times10^{-14}$, and $6.5\times10^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 90% of its area in the soft, hard, and full bands, respectively, which is comparable to those of the XMM-COSMOS survey. We identify multiwavelength counterpart candidates for 99.9% of the X-ray sources, of which 93% are considered as reliable based on their matching likelihood ratios. The reliabilities of these high-likelihood-ratio counterparts are further confirmed to be $\approx 97$% reliable based on deep Chandra coverage over $\approx 5$% of the XMM-LSS region. Results of multiwavelength identifications are also included in the source catalog, along with basic optical-to-infrared photometry and spectroscopic redshifts from publicly available surveys. We compute photometric redshifts for X-ray sources in 4.5 deg$^2$ of our field where forced-aperture multi-band photometry is available; $>70$% of the X-ray sources in this subfield have either spectroscopic or high-quality photometric redshifts., MNRAS, accepted. 34 pages, 25 figures, and 8 tables. We present the results from a $\sim500$ ks Chandra observation of the $z=6.31$ QSO SDSS J1030+0524. This is the deepest X-ray observation to date of a $z\sim6$ QSO. The QSO is detected with a total of 125 net counts in the full ($0.5-7$ keV) band and its spectrum can be modeled by a single power-law model with photon index of $\Gamma = 1.81 \pm 0.18$ and full band flux of $f=3.95\times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. When compared with the data obtained by XMM-Newton in 2003, our Chandra observation in 2017 shows a harder ($\Delta \Gamma \approx -0.6$) spectrum and a 2.5 times fainter flux. Such a variation, in a timespan of $\sim2$ yrs rest-frame, is unexpected for such a luminous QSO powered by a $> 10^9 \: M_{\odot}$ black hole. The observed source hardening and weakening could be related to an intrinsic variation in the accretion rate. However, the limited photon statistics does not allow us to discriminate between an intrinsic luminosity and spectral change, and an absorption event produced by an intervening gas cloud along the line of sight. We also report the discovery of diffuse X-ray emission that extends for 30"x20" southward the QSO with a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim$6, hardness ratio of $HR=0.03_{-0.25}^{+0.20}$, and soft band flux of $f_{0.5-2 \: keV}= 1.1_{-0.3}^{+0.3} \times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, that is not associated to a group or cluster of galaxies. We discuss two possible explanations for the extended emission, which may be either associated with the radio lobe of a nearby, foreground radio galaxy (at $z \approx 1-2$), or ascribed to the feedback from the QSO itself acting on its surrounding environment, as proposed by simulations of early black hole formation., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, A&A accepted

We analyze the globular cluster (GC) systems in two very different galaxies, NGC 3115 and NGC 1399. With the papers of this series, we aim at highlighting common and different properties in the GC systems in galaxies covering a wide range of parameter space. We compare the GCs in NGC 3115 and NGC 1399 as derived from the analysis of one square degree u-, g-, and i-band images taken with the VST telescope as part of the VST early-type galaxy survey (VEGAS) and Fornax deep survey (FDS). We selected GC candidates using as reference the morpho-photometric and color properties of confirmed GCs. The surface density maps of GCs in NGC 3115 reveal a morphology similar to the light profile of field stars; the same is true when blue and red GCs are taken separately. The GC maps for NGC 1399 are richer in structure and confirm the existence of an intra-cluster GC component. We confirm the presence of a spatial offset in the NGC 1399 GC centroid and find that the centroid of the GCs for NGC 3115 coincides well with the galaxy center. Both GC systems show unambiguous color bimodality in (g − i) and (u − i); the color–color relations of the two GC systems are slightly different with NGC 3115 appearing more linear than NGC 1399. The azimuthal average of the radial density profiles in both galaxies reveals a larger spatial extent for the total GCs population with respect to the galaxy surface brightness profile. For both galaxies, the red GCs have radial density profiles compatible with the galaxy light profile, while the radial profiles for blue GCs are shallower. As for the specific frequency of GCs, SN, we find it is a factor of two higher in NGC 1399 than for NGC 3115; this is mainly the result of extra blue GCs. By inspecting the radial behavior of the specific frequency, SN(
