New technologies are playing a fundamental role in the postmodern era of globalization where interpersonal interactions at the international level and the exchange of goods, services, information and capital are the basis of all activities. The agriculture sector is constantly facing numerous challenges including the steady growth of the population, climate change, the increasing number of catastrophes, the loss of biodiversity and the spread of parasites. This paper analyzes the impacts of Blockchain applications in agriculture and the food supply chain, through a survey literature review, providing the various players in the agriculture value chain with new tools and key technologies to improve production and distribution processes. To demonstrate the importance of applying the Blockchain in the agriculture sector, especially for emerging countries, the case of South Africa is examined. This focus is one of the unique aspects of this paper, which is the first to deal with this kind of solution applied to the South African context. Our findings indicate that Blockchain, in the e-agricultural context, has the potential for reshaping the entire sector, contributing also to the resolution of the food crisis. This paper contributes to the recent discussion concerning the interactions between China and Germany in the context of Industry 4.0, highlighting the most relevant innovation and trade trends and the policy implications of this collaboration. The qualitative analysis examines the features of the innovation systems in Germany and China and the strategies implemented to boost the innovation process. The quantitative analysis exploits trade, patent and publications data to identify trends related to China-Germany cooperation. This paper empirically investigates how the inter-sectoral knowledge flows affect the international competitiveness of industries, once controlling for both cost and other technological factors. Using patent data on 14 manufacturing industries in 16 OECD countries over the period 1995–2009, we apply a network-based approach to capture the effect of industries' position in the flows of technical knowledge across industries, which we label inter-sectoral knowledge space. We find that (i) centrality and local clustering in the inter-sectoral knowledge space positively affect the export market shares of an industry, (ii) such two effects are rather redundant and (iii) national-level knowledge flows' impacts on international competitiveness are way stronger than international ones. Network measures of position in the knowledge space are found to be more relevant than standard technological indicators such as patent counts. Our results point to the importance of industries being well located in the stream of knowledge flows, rather than being innovative per se, and offer a novel yet robust proxy to measure technological factors affecting trade performances. Blockchain technology, born as a tool to support Bitcoins (the most popular and controversial cryptocurrency in the world) has set itself in a very short time as a disruptive technology able not only to revolutionize existing businesses but also to create new ones. This work illustrates the main characteristics of the blockchain and its functioning, and then focuses on the potential applications that can be implemented for developing countries. More specifically, the work, considers the case of financial inclusion in Africa, on the basis of the Global Findex 2017 data, the World Bank Survey on financial inclusion. The empirical analysis identifies the weaknesses in the current financial system in Africa and constitues the basis to discuss potential blockchain solutions to reduce the current level of financial exclusion and pursue sustainable development for African countries. This paper investigates the collaboration of inventive activities at firm level in the Mediterranean area by investigating, through social network analysis, the collaboration between the two shores of Mediterranean area. Using patent data, our aim is to capture some relevant features of inventive activities in the Mediterranean region. Moreover, thanks to a social network analysis based approach, we investigate the collaboration at firm level in inventive activities. Results lead to important policy insights. In the recent years, many attempts to develop and implement innovation, science and technology policies have been made by the Mediterranean countries, especially on the African continent. Our results can help in highliting the efficacy of such policies. Particularly, our findings can promote policies for innovation and improve research collaboration among OECD inventors. Aim: To investigate the effects of quercetin and genistein on colon cancer cell proliferation and their estrogen receptor β (ERβ) expression., Methods: Colon cancer cells were stably transfected with a mammalian expression vector to overexpress ERβ (HCT8-β8-expressing cells) or a control vector (HCT8-pSV2neo-expressing cells). The proliferation of these cells was examined after treatment with quercetin or genistein (5-100 μmol/L), or 10 nmol/L 17β-estradiol (17β-E2). Cell viability was examined by acridine orange staining following treatments for 48 or 144 h. Effects of quercetin and genistein on ERβ transcriptional transactivation were examined by luciferase activity in HCT8-β8-expressing cells transiently transfected with a pEREtkLUC reporter vector. In addition, the regulation of ERβ transcription by phytoestrogens and 17β-E2 was examined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction., Results: Proliferation of HCT8-β8-expressing cells was not reduced low doses (5 μmol/L) of quercetin and genistein, while it was reduced at 25-50 μmol/L with an effect similar to 10 nmol/L 17β-E2. Treatment with doses of phytoestrogens ≥ 75 μmol/L completely blocked cell growth and reduced overall cell counts, however no effects at any dose were observed in HCT8-pSV2neo-expressing cells. These results were supported by viability staining that revealed acridine orange-stained lysosomes with high doses or extended treatment periods. Genistein and quercetin (50 μmol/L) significantly increased ER-responsive luciferase activity similar to 10 nmol/L 17β-E2 (P < 0.05). Furthermore, genistein and quercetin (50 μmol/L), as well as 10 nmol/L 17β-E2 significantly increased ERβ mRNA levels in HCT8-β8-expressing cells (P < 0.05). In addition, treatment of HCT8-pSV2neo-expressing cells with 50 µmol/L quercetin or 10 nmol/L 17β-E2 significantly increased ERβ mRNA levels compared to untreated controls (P < 0.05), though the absolute levels were much lower than in HCT8-β8-expressing cells., Conclusion: The antitumorigenic effects of the phytoestrogenic compounds quercetin and genistein on colon cancers cells occur through ERβ activity and expression.
