Purpose: Zygomatic implants are considered one of the last options for the rehabilitation of severe maxillary atrophy when standard implants cannot be placed. They offer several advantages but can also present complications. This study aimed to investigate the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of zygomatic implant placement., Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted, and the inclusion criteria consisted of patients previously treated with zygomatic implants who had Class V or VI maxillary bone atrophy according to Cawood and Howell, and with a minimum follow-up period of 2 years after prosthetic loading. Outcome measures included implant and prosthesis survival rate, biological and biomechanical complications, and Lund-Mackay staging score before and after implant placement., Results: The study included 78 patients who received a total of 274 zygomatic implants. The mean follow-up period was 90.4 ± 26.0 months. Seventeen implant failures occurred, resulting in a survival rate of 93.8%, with a statistically significant negative correlation with smoking habits (P = 0.049), anchorage to the two zygomatic bone cortices (bicorticality) (P 0.001) and soft tissue complications (P 0.001). The prosthetic success rate was 92.3%. A statistically significant increase in maxillary sinus radiopacity was recorded when comparing the situation before and after surgery (P 0.001), and the intrasinus pathway had a statistically significant influence on that increase (P = 0.003)., Conclusions: Zygomatic implants utilised for rehabilitating patients with severe maxillary atrophy have shown favourable outcomes. Nonetheless, owing to potential complications, strict case selection is necessary, combined with regular recall visits and proper oral hygiene maintenance. Furthermore, this type of surgery necessitates specialised training and expertise on the part of the practitioner.

The objective of this study was to compare the aging changes of the dental arches in patients treated without extractions and untreated normal occlusion subjects after a four-decade follow-up. This retrospective study evaluated two groups: The Treated Group (Group T) comprised 16 patients (6 male; 10 female) presenting with Class I or Class II malocclusions treated orthodontically without extractions. Dental models were evaluated 3 stages: T1 (pretreatment, 13.20 years), T2 (posttreatment, 15.07 years) and T3 (long-term posttreatment, 50.32 years). The Untreated Group (Group UT) consisted of 22 untreated normal occlusion individuals. The dental casts were evaluated at the ages of 13.32 (T1), 17.82 (T2) and 60.95 years (T3). The dental casts were digitized and the irregularity index, intercanine, interpremolar and intermolar widths, overjet and overbite, arch length and perimeter were measured. Intergroup comparisons were performed with independent t tests (P < 0.05). From T1 to T2, the treated group showed maxillary and mandibular crowding and overjet decrease and a maxillary interpremolar and intermolar width increase compared to the untreated group. From T2 to T3, a greater maxillary and mandibular crowding increase and a greater arch length decrease were observed in the treated group compared to the normal occlusion subjects. Overbite increased in the treated group and decreased in the untreated group. The maturational changes of treated patients were different from untreated normal occlusion subjects. Relapse might have contributed for the greater changes observed in incisor crowding and arch length observed in orthodontically treated patients. The aging changes of untreated normal occlusions and nonextraction treated patients, after a four-decade follow-up, proved to be different, indicating that relapse of orthodontic treatment played a role in aging changes of treated patients., (© 2024. Background: Environmental and genetic factors associated with canine impaction have been extensively researched, whereas the bone characteristics in the impaction area have not been thoroughly studied. Accordingly, the objective of this investigation was to provide a skeletal assessment in terms of bone density, bone microstructure, bone volume, and palatal volume in subjects with unilaterally impacted maxillary canines., Methods: A retrospective design has been employed to address the aim of this study, where the initial pre-treatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 30 patients with unilateral maxillary canine impaction were assessed. The obtained patients' data were equally divided according to the location of the impaction into 2 groups, one with buccally impacted canines, and another with palatal impactions, with the contra-lateral sides in both groups serving as the controls. Skeletal measurements such as bone density (BD), bone microstructure in terms of fractal dimension (FD), maxillary bone volume (MBV), and palatal volume (PV) were evaluated from the acquired CBCTs in both groups and compared to the controls., Results: With buccal impactions, significantly greater BD and FD have been reported (p < 0.001), whereas non-significant differences were found regarding the PV when compared with controls (p = 0.56). MBV was significantly greater on the non-impaction side in comparison with buccal impaction sides (p < 0.001). For palatal impactions: BD, FD, and MBV were significantly greater on the impaction sides (p < 0.001), and conversely with PV which has been reported to be significantly greater on the non-impaction sides (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: As per the obtained results, buccally impacted canines are associated with greater BD and FD, and less MBV, whereas palatally impacted canines are accompanied with greater BD, FD, and MBV, in addition to less PV, when both conditions are compared with the non-impaction sides., (© 2024. VY closure of the Le Fort 1 incision may commonly be indicated to mitigate the lip shortening effects of maxillary advancement. The objective of this systematic review was to investigate if VY closure prevents lip shortening when compared with conventional continuous closure (CS) methods, in patients who underwent le fort 1 maxillary advancement. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were accessed. Hand searching was also performed. Observational studies, non-randomised and randomized controlled trials were included if Le Fort 1 maxillary advancement was performed to correct a dentofacial deformity. Comparisons were made between VY and CS, and morphological changes to the upper lip were evaluated. The demographic data, study methodology, magnitude of maxillary movements and outcomes related to the lip morphology (length, vermillion exposure, thickness and angulation) were extracted. The search yielded 487 articles. Six studies were included after the application of the selection criteria. A total of 100 and 94 patients received CS and VY respectively. VY was not found to reliably prevent lip shortening. VY was more likely to mitigate lip shortening when there is a large maxillary advancement. It was consistent for a protrusive or "rolled-out" lip morphology to occur after a VY closure. This was demonstrated by the increase in lip vermillion exposure, thickness, and angulation. VY closure was a useful adjunctive technique in patients undergoing large maxillary advancements to mitigate the lip shortening effect from the procedure. Vertical soft tissue augmentation between implants can be clinically challenging and burdensome for patients when employing conventional techniques. Recently, with the introduction of xenogenic collagen matrices, the principle of single-site surgery has become more common. However, some issues persist regarding graft stability and tissue integration. In the present technical note, the authors introduce the "HAT-TRICK" technique to address these observed difficulties. As the name suggests, this technique is believed to provide improved stability, volumetric gain, and histological integration of the implanted matrix by shaping it appropriately resembling a hat over the crest with apical bevels, stabilized with fixation pins and infused with cross-linked hyaluronic acid (xHya). Background: Primary headaches (PH) are a group of disorders greatly impairing quality of life, highly prevalent in growing population. Previous studies suggested a rhinogenic involvement in PH episodes. Modifications of nasal cavities and septum take place during rapid maxillary expansion (RME). This study aims to investigate the role of skeletal modifications due to RME on PH episodes., Methods: Sixty-eight growing patients (30/38 MF 7-12 y.o 9.2 ± 1.3 SD) were enrolled. All the selected sample patients reported at least 12 PH episodes in the previous year and were diagnosed with maxillary constriction to be treated with RME. Changes in PH episodes before and after this orthodontic procedure were analysed using paired t-tests. Correlations between age and PH episodes were assessed using Spearman correlation coefficients. Correlations between cephalometric changes and PH episodes were investigated using paired t-tests., Conclusion: RME produces significant modifications in maxillary and nasal width and lower nasal length and decreased monthly episodes of PH significantly. It can be supposed and inferred that RME has beneficial effects on PH in growing patients.

Introduction: This study aimed to use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the dimensional and morphological characteristics of unilaterally impacted canines, their effects on adjacent teeth, and differences with contralaterally erupted canines., Materials and Methods: A sample of 31 patients (22 males, mean age 22.22 ± 4.82 years; 9 females, mean age 23.91 ± 5.16 years) with unilaterally impacted maxillary palatal teeth were included in the study. CBCT images were obtained using a NewTom 5 G unit in standard mode. Three-dimensional multiplanar reconstructions emulating a panoramic view and curved planar reconstructions were evaluated. Individuals were divided into two groups (low- and high-complexity) according to Ericson and Kurol's impaction complexity classification., Results: The crown lengths and mesiodistal crown widths of the impacted canines were similar to the symmetric canine on the opposite arch and significantly larger than adjacent lateral and premolar teeth (p<0.05). The alpha (31.33 ± 8.32) and beta angles (39.53 ± 10.31) and the 'h' height (10.11 ± 2.02) values in the low-complexity group were significantly lower than the high-complexity group (alpha angle=57.40 ± 12.15; beta angle=71.31 ± 13.94; 'h' height=14.35 ± 3.71, and alpha angle: p<0.001; beta angle: p<0.001; 'h' height: p=0.002) CONCLUSION: The root lengths of impacted maxillary canine teeth are significantly shorter than symmetrically erupted canine teeth regarding labiolingual crown width. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine if a deep learning (DL) model can predict the surgical difficulty for impacted maxillary third molar tooth using panoramic images before surgery., Materials and Methods: The dataset consists of 708 panoramic radiographs of the patients who applied to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic for various reasons. Each maxillary third molar difficulty was scored based on dept (V), angulation (H), relation with maxillary sinus (S), and relation with ramus (R) on panoramic images. The YoloV5x architecture was used to perform automatic segmentation and classification. To prevent re-testing of images, participate in the training, the data set was subdivided as: 80 % training, 10 % validation, and 10 % test group., Results: Impacted Upper Third Molar Segmentation model showed best success on sensitivity, precision and F1 score with 0,9705, 0,9428 and 0,9565, respectively. This study aimed to subjectively evaluate bone quality in the particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM) graft area and to assess the survival rates of implants. A retrospective review was conducted based on patient age, sex, diagnosis, reconstructed site, number of implants, prosthetic type, and duration of follow-up. Images from computed tomography (CT) before implant insertion were obtained and used in this study. We selected a 4.0-mm diameter × 8.0-mm length region of interest in the implant placement area, and measured the CT attenuation value. No significant correlations were seen between CT attenuation values and implant survival rates in the maxilla and mandible. On the other hand, CT attenuation values and implant survival rates were significantly lower in patients with malignancy than in non-malignant cases. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of maxillary movements in orthognathic surgery on nasal airway volume change and its correlation with airflow and resistance., Materials and Methods: This study included 25 patients (8 male, 17 female) with Class II (6 patients) or Class III (19 patients) malocclusion. All patients underwent Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Nasal airflow and resistance were measured by using rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry pre and six months post-operatively. Nasal volume was measured using computed tomography before surgery and six months after surgery., Results: Nasal volume increased in 10 out of 11 patients with CCW (counterclockwise) rotation and decreased in 1 patient while, nasal volume increased in 5 patients with CW (clockwise) rotation and decreased in 9 patients. Superior nasal airway volume increased significantly, while the effects on nasal flow and resistance were not significant. Introduction: This paper employs finite element analysis to assess the biomechanical behavior of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) with a bone-borne transpalatal distractor (TPD) by varying surgical parameters., Material and Methods: Nine models were constructed to scrutinize the effects of pterygomaxillary disjunction (PMD), lateral osteotomy positioning, and TPD placement on displacement profiles and Von Mises stresses. These models encompassed variations such as no, unilateral or bilateral PMD, asymmetrical lateral osteotomy, and five TPD locations., Results: Performing a PMD reduces posterior resistance to transverse expansion, resulting in 10-20 % stress reduction around the maxillofacial complex. No significant changes in horizontal tipping were observed post-PMD. The asymmetric lateral osteotomy model exhibited larger displacements on the side with a more superiorly positioned osteotomy. Reduced stresses were observed at the maxillary body and medial pterygoid plate (superiorly), while increased stresses were observed at the medial (inferiorly) and lateral pterygoid plates. More posterior TPD placement facilitated more parallel expansion thus less horizontal tipping, albeit with increased vertical tipping., Discussion: SARPE procedures (distractor and osteotomy positions) can be tailored based on desired outcomes. PMD reduces stress within the maxillofacial complex but doesn't significantly affect tipping. Objective: Distraction osteogenesis is one of the treatment options in patients with severe maxillomandibular abnormalities to treat morphological and respiratory problems (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome). The study aimed to evaluate the effect of Le Fort I, II and III distraction osteogenesis (DO) on upper airway dimensions and respiratory function., Methods: Electronic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar and Cochrane databases. Studies that only involved two dimensional analyses were excluded. Besides, studies that performed DO in conjunction with orthognathic surgery were not considered. NIH quality assessment tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias. Meta-analyses were performed to assess sleep apnea indices and the mean differences in the airway dimensions before and after DO. Gradings of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation were used to analyze the evidence level., Results: Among the 114 studies that went under full-text analyses, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria. Results of the quantitative analyses showed that maxillary Le Fort III DO significantly increased the amounts of oropharyngeal, pharyngeal and upper airway volumes. However, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) showed a non-significant improvement after this procedure. Besides, the dimensions of the airways increased with Le Fort I and II DO, according to a qualitative analysis. Considering the design of the included studies, our results had a low level of evidence., Conclusion: Maxillary Le Fort DO does not significantly impact AHI, while it significantly increases the airway dimensions. Implant-prosthetic rehabilitations of severely atrophic posterior maxillary sectors currently is challenging, often requiring multiple surgeries and long rehabilitation times. Recently, graftless techniques (e.g. zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants) have gained popularity as they offer a reduction in rehabilitation time, aligning more closely with patient preferences but may not be feasible for sectorial rehabilitations. Subperiosteal implants, suggested for full-arch rehabilitations of atrophic maxilla, haven't been explored for sectorial rehabilitations. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the survival rate of pterygoid implants compared to implants placed in different maxilla area and to settle as an alternative solution for the rehabilitation of the posterior maxilla atrophy. Studies that were included for this systematic review were selected using different database of references: PubMed Medline, Lilacs and Cochrane Library. Other journal platforms were also used for the research. Five articles met the strict inclusion/exclusion criteria of the 180 articles founded. This systematic review was registered on Prospero (CRD42023409706) and followed PRISMA statement. A total of 768 implants placed presented 97.43 % with a peak of 100 % of survival rate. Follow-up period varies from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of six years. Pterygoid implants could be a valid alternative in patients presenting a posterior maxilla atrophy, but results should be interpreted cautiously due to the difficulty of the surgical technique. Objectives: The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the effect of age and gender on the alveolar bone destruction pattern with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the posterior region of the maxilla., Materials and Methods: The study group included CBCT image records of 361 consecutive patients (180 males and 181 females) aged 20 years and older. Alveolar crest morphology in the maxillary right and left first and second molar teeth on retrospective images was classified as a horizontal or vertical defect (one-walled, two-walled, three-walled, and combined bone defect) on four surfaces (mesial, distal, buccal, and palatinal). Bone crater defects were defined, and furcation involvements and combined periodontal-endodontic lesions (CPELs) were placed in another category., Results: In 361 patients, 1444 teeth were evaluated from adults between 20 and 63 years of age; 49.9% of the patients were male and 50.1% were female. Female patients had a considerably greater rate of one-walled horizontal damage in the right molar teeth than male patients (p = 0.002; p < 0.05). Patients with combined horizontal destruction in the right and left molar teeth, horizontal destruction in the palatinal, and horizontal three-walled destruction had a significantly higher mean age than patients without these periodontal destructions (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). Males were shown to have statistically higher frequencies of horizontal defects when defects were combined or distally and palatally located., Conclusions: Age and gender affect the alveolar bone loss pattern. Except for single-walled destructions, it has been found that the frequency of horizontal destruction increases with age. Objectives: Aberrant facial growth in individuals affected by orofacial clefts can result in maxillary retrusion and class III malocclusion, with a proportion requiring surgical correction at cessation of growth. This study aimed to evaluate occlusal and cephalometric outcomes of combined orthodontic-orthognathic treatment., Material and Methods: Retrospective cohort study in a United Kingdom cleft center. Participants included twenty-seven patients (20 males, 7 females) with cleft (n = 16 UCLP :7 BCLP :4 ICP) who consecutively underwent combined surgical treatment for Class III malocclusion between January 2013 and December 2017. Records were collected pre-treatment (T0), pre-surgery (T1) and at debond (T2). Models were scored using the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index and cephalometric radiographs were traced and analyzed. Outcomes were assessed by an independent rater., Results: Mean age at surgery was 21.4 years (SD 4.9). Le Fort 1 advancement (mean 6.1 mm, SD 4.0) was performed in all cases. Additional procedures included mandibular setback (n = 2), cortico-cancellous bone grafting (n = 6) and genioplasty (n = 1). Mean T0 PAR score was 44.8 (SD 11.7), reducing to 3.6 (SD 2.0) at T2, indicating a mean % PAR score reduction of 91.6% (SD 4.7). Class III skeletal profiles improved from a mean T0 ANB of -2.1º (SD 2.2), to 2.8º (SD 1.6) at T2. Mean T0 overjet was -3.3 mm (SD 2.3), increasing to 2.6 mm (SD 1.3) at T2., Conclusion: Cleft orthognathic surgery differs in complexity and approach to routine orthognathics, however, these results demonstrate that occlusal outcomes can still be comparable with non-cleft populations. Introduction: The complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) divides the maxillary arch into three segments, separated from each other, resulting in abnormal growth of the alveolar arch. This study evaluated the maxillary arch dimensions in BCLP and compared them with neonates without craniofacial anomalies., Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary cleft centre. Sixty-six neonates aged 0-5 months were divided into two groups: cleft group-children with BCLP (23 boys and 18 girls) and control group-children without craniofacial deformities (15 boys and 10 girls). The dental models were processed by a 3D scanner. Landmarks were marked to achieve inter-canine distance, inter-tuberosity distance and arch length measurements. t-Tests were used for intergroup comparisons (p < .05)., Results: The maxillary cleft arch was demonstrated to be wider and longer in the posterior region compared to the control group. The inter-canine distance did not present differences between the cleft and controls. The inter-canine distance of the control group was the only measurement influenced by the variable sex., Conclusions: The cleft significantly interfered with the arch posterior width and arch sagittal length, making them larger. Background: The determining effect of facial hard tissues on soft tissue morphology in orthodontic patients has yet to be explained. The aim of this study was to clarify the hard-soft tissue relationships of the lower 1/3 of the face in skeletal Class II-hyperdivergent patients compared with those in Class I-normodivergent patients using network analysis., Methods: Fifty-two adult patients (42 females, 10 males; age, 26.58 ± 5.80 years) were divided into two groups: Group 1, 25 subjects, skeletal Class I normodivergent pattern with straight profile; Group 2, 27 subjects, skeletal Class II hyperdivergent pattern with convex profile. Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography and three-dimensional facial scans were taken and superimposed, on which landmarks were identified manually, and their coordinate values were used for network analysis., Results: (1) In sagittal direction, Group 2 correlations were generally weaker than Group 1. In both the vertical and sagittal directions of Group 1, the most influential hard tissue landmarks to soft tissues were located between the level of cemento-enamel junction of upper teeth and root apex of lower teeth. In Group 2, the hard tissue landmarks with the greatest influence in vertical direction were distributed more forward and downward than in Group 1. (2) In Group 1, all the correlations for vertical-hard tissue to sagittal-soft tissue position and sagittal-hard tissue to vertical-soft tissue position were positive. However, Group 2 correlations between vertical-hard tissue and sagittal-soft tissue positions were mostly negative. Between sagittal-hard tissue and vertical-soft tissue positions, Group 2 correlations were negative for mandible, and were positive for maxilla and teeth., Conclusion: Compared with Class I normodivergent patients with straight profile, Class II hyperdivergent patients with convex profile had more variations in soft tissue morphology in sagittal direction. In vertical direction, the most relevant hard tissue landmarks on which soft tissue predictions should be based were distributed more forward and downward in Class II hyperdivergent patients with convex profile. Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of maxillary canine impaction through cephalometric evaluation., Methods: One hundred and eighty-two Caucasian patients (80 males and 102 females) with a mean age of 12.4±0.5 were retrospectively enrolled in the present study. Ninety patients with impacted canines were compared with ninety-two patients with physiologically erupted canines. The following cephalometric variables were analyzed: SNA, ANB, SN-GOME, GO-ME, SP-CL, SELLA TURCICA DEPHT, A-Pt LINE, B-Pt LINE, A-Pt LINE°, B-Pt LINE°, A1s-Pt, A1i-Pt, A1s-Pt°, A1i-PT°, A-SN, B-SN and SN-U1. When applicable, a paired sample t-test was performed to investigate the difference in means between the two sample groups, while the Mann-Whitney Test was used as a non-parametric test in the case of a non-normal distribution of data. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05., Results: The group with impacted canines showed an increase in Go-Me distance, SNA angle and A1s-Pt angle compared with the control group. In addition, the same group showed a decrease in A-SN and SP-Cl distance compared with the control group., Conclusions: An increase in mandibular length (GO-ME) and SNA angle associated with a reduction in A-Sn distance and interclinoid distance (SP-Cl) were observed in patients with impacted canines.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of modified clear Twin Block (CTB) aligner and traditional twin block (TB) appliance from skeletal, dentoalveolar and soft tissue changes in adolescents with skeletal class II malocclusion., Methods: A total of 80 adolescents, included in this study from two medical centres, were distributed into CTB group, TB group and control group based on the treatment they received. Lateral cephalograms at pre-treatment (T1) and post-treatment (T2) were measured by modified Pancherz's cephalometric analysis, and dentoskeletal and soft tissue changes were analysed by independent-sample t-test, paired-sample t-test, ANOVA test and Scheffe's Post Hoc test., Results: Seventy-five adolescents completed the study, including 32 in the CTB group, 32 in the TB group and 11 in the control group. Both CTB and TB treatment showed significant differences in most dentoskeletal and soft tissue measurements. Compared with the control group, improvements were observed in class II molar relationship through significant different in S Vert/Ms-S Vert/Mi in the CTB group (P < .01) and the TB group (P < .001), as well as deep overjet through significant different in S Vert/Is-S Vert/Ii in the CTB group (P < .001) and the TB group (P < .001). Besides, the CTB group also showed less protrusion of lower incisors and resulted in a more significant improvement in profile with fewer adverse effects on speaking, eating and social activities., Conclusions: For adolescents with skeletal class II malocclusion, CTB appliance was as effective as TB on improving dentoskeletal and soft tissue measurements, featuring more reliable teeth control and patient acceptance., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)

Background: Early orthopaedic treatment with rapid maxillary expansion (RME) associated with facemask (FM) has been shown to be effective in correcting Class III malocclusions in children. Treatment with pushing splints 3 (PS3) has shown to correct skeletal discrepancies in Class III growing patients. However, the effects of orthopaedic treatment on the upper airways in children with Class III malocclusion is controversial., Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cephalometric changes in the airways of PS3 compared to the RME/FM protocol., Materials and Methods: In this study, 48 patients with Class III malocclusion (age range 5.5-8.5 years old) were selected for this study, and 24 were treated with PS3 appliance and 24 with RME/FM therapy. Lateral cephalograms before (T0) and at the end of the treatment (T1) were analysed to compare pharyngeal spaces. Paired and unpaired t tests were used for data analysis (P < .05)., Results: A total of 41 patients (21 patients for the PS3 group, 11 males and 10 females, mean age 7.0 ± 1.2 years; 20 patients for the RME/FM group, 10 males and 10 females, mean age 7.2 ± 1.3 years) were included. The results showed a statistically significant (P < .05) increase in the nasopharyngeal space after both therapies. However, the effects were similar considering that there were no differences between groups for the assessed variables at T0-T1., Conclusions: Early treatment of Class III malocclusion with PS3 does not induce a statistically significant increase in the sagittal airway space compared to RME/FM. Objectives: This study aimed to compare and evaluate different transverse width indices for diagnosing maxillary transverse deficiency (MTD), a common malocclusion characterized by uncoordinated dental arches, crossbites, and tooth crowding., Materials and Methods: Sixty patients aged 7-12 years were included in the study, with 20 patients diagnosed with MTD and 40 normal controls. Transverse width indices, including maxillary width at the buccal alveolar crest and lingual midroot level, as well as at the jugal process width, were measured. Differences between these indices and their corresponding mandibular indices were used as standardized transverse width indices. The reference range of these indices was determined and evaluated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate their diagnostic ability., Results: The transverse width indices and standardized transverse width indices of the MTD group were significantly smaller than those of the control group, except for the jugal process width. The evaluation of the reference range and ROC analysis revealed that the difference of the maxillomandibular width at buccal alveolar crest was the most accurate diagnostic method., Conclusions: The jugal point analysis method may not be suitable for diagnosing MTD. Background: The assessment of hard and soft tissue at edentulous sites is important for subsequent implant treatment design. The aim of the present study was to explore the associations between the keratinized mucosa width (KMW) and the underlying alveolar bone dimensions at partial edentulous molar sites., Methods: In this retrospective study, a total of 110 patients with at least one missing molar were selected. The buccal KMW of the edentulous molar sites was evaluated. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were collected, and the height discrepancy between the alveolar crest and the buccal bone plate (H C-B ) as well as the alveolar bone height (ABH) were measured. The KMW was compared among the H C-B and ABH groups at both maxillary and mandibular sites. Linear regression and generalized estimation equations (GEEs) were used to explore the associations between the KMW and alveolar bone dimensions at α = 0.05., Results: Among the 110 patients, 158 edentulous molar sites were analyzed. The average H C-B and ABH were significantly lower at the maxillary sites (1.26 ± 1.62 mm, 11.62 ± 3.94 mm) than at the mandibular sites (3.67 ± 2.85 mm, 14.91 ± 3.01 mm, p < 0.001). The KMW was significantly lower at sites with H C-B > 2 mm than at sites with H C-B ≤ 2 mm both in the maxilla and mandible (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found between the KMW at sites with ABH < 10 mm and sites with ABH ≥ 10 mm (p > 0.05). Linear regression and GEEs analyses revealed that the H C-B was significantly associated with the KMW (B = -0.339, p < 0.001), while the association between the KMW and the ABH was not statistically significant (B = -0.046, p = 0.352)., Conclusions: The buccal KMW at edentulous molar sites was significantly associated with the H C-B . Alveolar ridges presenting with a sloped configuration were more prone to possess a narrower band of keratinized mucosa. Both hard and soft tissue augmentation should be considered for implant treatment at these sites. To compare craniofacial and cervical morphology between skeletal Classes II and III applying Geometric Morphometric Methods (GMM). Twenty-six cervical and craniofacial landmarks of 40 Class II and 39 Class III individuals were digitalized on lateral cephalograms. Procrustes ANOVA, generalized Procrustes, principal component analyses, and thin-plate spline function were applied to assess the pattern of shape variation of craniofacial structure and the cervical spine in relation to skeletal classes. Compared with Class III, Class II individuals presented a maxillary protrusion, mandibular retrusion, shorter mandibular corpus, posterior mandibular ramus rotation, anterior cranial base rotation, and a smaller centroid size. Furthermore, a forward and smaller cervical spine were observed. With GMM, the shape and size differences between skeletal classes can be analyzed visually and numerically.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) represents an uncommon reactive endothelial hyperplastic proliferation. A 46-year-old man experienced increased volume in the right maxilla, elevation of the nasal ala, and swelling of the hard palate with a reddish hue for 3 months. Computed tomography revealed an expansive hypodense region and cortical bone destruction associated with an impacted supernumerary tooth and an endodontically treated tooth. Under the differential diagnoses of a radicular cyst, dentigerous cyst, and ameloblastoma, an exploratory aspiration and incisional biopsy were performed. This revealed the formation of blood vessels of various diameters lined by endothelium, forming intravascular papillae positive for CD-34. The definitive diagnosis was IPEH, and the patient was treated by embolization and surgery. Histological analysis confirmed the presence of IPEH associated with an odontogenic cyst. After 12 months of follow-up, no recurrence was observed. Also, we reviewed case reports of IPEH affecting the maxilla and mandible. Fourteen intraosseous cases were reported in the maxilla and mandible, with a preference for males and affecting a wide age range. Complete surgical excision was the treatment of choice, and recurrences were not reported. The pathogenesis of IPEH is controversial and may originate from trauma or inflammatory processes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an association of IPEH with an odontogenic cyst. The importance of IPEH in the differential diagnosis of intraosseous lesions in the jaws is emphasized, and preoperative semiotic maneuvers are needed to prevent surgical complications., (© 2024. Objectives: Endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMM) is an effective intervention for patients with recalcitrant maxillary sinusitis after previous middle meatal antrostomy. The pathophysiology of refractory maxillary sinusitis is incompletely understood. We aim to identify trends in structured histopathology (SHP) to better understand how tissue architecture changes contribute to refractory sinusitis and impaired mucociliary clearance., Methods: All patients who underwent EMM or standard maxillary antrostomy for recalcitrant maxillary sinusitis of various forms were included. Retrospective chart review was conducted to collect information on demographics, disease characteristics, comorbid conditions, culture data, and SHP reports. Chi-squared and logistic regression analyses were performed for SHP variables., Results: Forty-one patients who underwent EMM and 464 patients who underwent maxillary antrostomy were included. On average, the EMM cohort was 10 years older (60.9 years vs. 51.1 years; p = 0.001) and more often had a history of prior sinus procedures (73.2% vs. 40.9%; p < 0.001). EMM patients had higher rates of fibrosis (34.1% vs. 15.1%, p = 0.002), and this remained statistically significant when controlling for prior sinus procedures and nasal polyposis (p = 0.001). Cultures positive for pseudomonas aeruginosa (38.2% vs. 5.6%, p < 0.001) and coagulase negative staphylococcus (47.1% vs. 23.5%, p = 0.003) were more prevalent in the EMM group., Conclusion: Fibrosis and bacterial infections with Pseudomonas and coagulase negative Staphylococcus were more prevalent in patients requiring EMM. Severe midface and maxillary hypoplasia can have an impact on an individual, either on the appearance, functions or psychologically. Based on literature review, severe maxillary hypoplasia with more than 25.0 mm reverse overjet in non-cleft and non-syndromic patients is very rare. It is more often seen in cleft lip and palate and syndromic patients. When the magnitude of correction exceeds the limit of what a single orthognathic surgery can achieve, multiple surgeries would be required, involving different surgical techniques. The authors report two rare cases of non-syndromic nor cleft severe hypoplastic midface and maxilla with 26.0 mm and 27.0 mm reverse overjet, respectively, treated with 2-stage surgery involving maxillary distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgery. Both cases recorded reasonably clinical and functional outcomes. Objectives: To investigate the internal structure of the nasomaxillary complex, including the maxillary sinus, nasal cavity and nasal septum according to the facial asymmetry pattern and to evaluate its correlation with external maxillomandibular asymmetry in Class III patients based on cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images., Materials and Methods: Facial asymmetry was analysed in a total of 100 Class III patients aged 16 years or older using CBCT scans. Patients were categorized into subgroups based on asymmetry pattern. Measurements of the nasomaxillary complex were obtained from the CBCT scans, including the volume and width of the maxillary sinuses and nasal cavities on deviated and non-deviated sides, as well as the displacement of the nasal septum. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the internal nasomaxillary variables within and between groups, and regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the correlation between facial asymmetry and the internal nasomaxillary variables., Results: Group comparisons showed that there were no significant differences in the volume of the maxillary sinus and nasal cavity. However, the direction and extent of nasal septum deviation, as well as the width of the nasal cavity, varied depending on the maxillary asymmetry pattern. Regression analysis indicated a correlation between nasal septum deviation and the difference in maxillary height, while the difference in nasal cavity width was correlated with the difference in maxillary width., Conclusion: A comprehensive evaluation of the internal nasal anatomy is vital for understanding the intricate relationship between nasal structure and maxillary growth., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons A/S. This retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed adult patients with operated cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and normal control, and performed comprehensive craniofacial and nasal morphological analyses based on lateral cephalometric radiographs. Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient assessed intraclass correlation. Seven hundred fifty-seven operated patients with CL/P, and 165 noncleft normal controls were enrolled. Among the normal and CL/P groups, S-N-A angle registered positive correlations with nasal base prominence (S-N'-Sn, degrees). Upper facial height (N-ANS, mm) had positive correlations with nasal dorsum length (N'-Prn, mm) and nasal bone length (N-Na, mm). Although in patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate, there were moderate negative correlations ( r =-0.541, P <0.05) with soft tissue facial profile angle (FH-N'Pog', degree) and nasolabial angle (Cm-Sn-ULA, degree). Correlation exists between the morphology of jaw bones and external nose among patients with CL/P. Objective: To evaluate the impact of molar distalization with clear aligners (CAs) on maxillary sinus parameters and its proximity to the root apices of maxillary molars using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)., Methods: The study involved pre- and post-treatment CBCT images of 27 adult patients. MIMICS 21.0 software was used to measure maxillary sinus volume and surface area, while Invivo Dental 6.0 program was used to measure the sinus diameters and proximity of the maxillary molar root apices to the sinus floor., Results: Post-treatment, there was a marked increase in the average volume and surface area of the maxillary sinus on both sides; however, changes in dimensions were not statistically significant. Sinus proximity to the root apices of the maxillary molars showed statistically significant differences, particularly on the left side for all roots. Gender and age impacted the outcomes, with males and younger individuals showing more pronounced changes. No significant differences were observed between the left and right sinuses in all parameters., Conclusion: Molar distalization with CAs increases maxillary sinus parameters, more notably in younger and male patients. This pilot case series histologically and histometrically investigated the influence of implant surface hydrophilicity on early osseointegration and peri-implant bone formation around simultaneously grafted immediate implants. Hydrophilic test (SLAactive) or hydrophobic control (SLA) implants were immediately placed in maxillary molar extraction sites and simultaneously grafted with mineralized cancellous bone allograft (MCBA). Core biopsy samples were obtained at 3 weeks postplacement and histometrically compared for bone-to-implant contact, quantity of graft material, new bone formation, tissue reaction, and inflammatory scores. Test implants showed a more pronounced implant-bone apposition, peri-implant bone formation, and bone aggregate than control implants. Trabecular bone formation and maturation were also qualitatively advanced around test implants. These results indicate that the combination of implant surface and bone graft may affect periimplant bone formation.

Background: Peripheral ossifying fibroma is a nonneoplastic inflammatory hyperplasia that originates in the periodontal ligament or periosteum in response to chronic mechanical irritation. Peripheral ossifying fibroma develops more commonly in young females as a solitary, slow-growing, exophytic nodular mass of the gingiva, no more than 2 cm in diameter. While various synonyms have been used to refer to peripheral ossifying fibroma, very similar names have also been applied to neoplastic diseases that are pathologically distinct from peripheral ossifying fibroma, causing considerable nomenclatural confusion. Herein, we report our experience with an unusual giant peripheral ossifying fibroma with a differential diagnostic challenge in distinguishing it from a malignancy., Case Presentation: A 68-year-old Japanese male was referred to our department with a suspected gingival malignancy presenting with an elastic hard, pedunculated, exophytic mass 60 mm in diameter in the right maxillary gingiva. In addition to computed tomography showing extensive bone destruction in the right maxillary alveolus, positron emission tomography with computed tomography revealed fluorodeoxyglucose hyperaccumulation in the gingival lesion. Although these clinical findings were highly suggestive of malignancy, repeated preoperative biopsies showed no evidence of malignancy. Since even intraoperative frozen histological examination revealed no malignancy, surgical resection was performed in the form of partial maxillectomy for benign disease, followed by thorough curettage of the surrounding granulation tissue and alveolar bone. Histologically, the excised mass consisted primarily of a fibrous component with sparse proliferation of atypical fibroblast-like cells, partly comprising ossification, leading to a final diagnosis of peripheral ossifying fibroma. No relapse was observed at the 10-month follow-up., Conclusions: The clinical presentation of giant peripheral ossifying fibromas can make the differential diagnosis from malignancy difficult. Proper diagnosis relies on recognition of the characteristic histopathology and identification of the underlying chronic mechanical stimuli, while successful treatment mandates complete excision of the lesion and optimization of oral hygiene. Complicated terminological issues associated with peripheral ossifying fibroma require appropriate interpretation and sufficient awareness of the disease names to avoid diagnostic confusion and provide optimal management., (© 2024. This case report describes an aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla of a young dog. It describes the clinical presentation, diagnostics, management, and successful outcome of this highly unusual case. Bone cysts are described as benign, cavitated lesions within bone that are lined by reactive tissues. There is no epithelial lining in the lesions. Bone cysts usually contain hemorrhage or serosanguinous fluid. To investigate de effect of PAb gel on the bone tissue of rats submitted to Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). Initially, 54 animals were submitted to BRONJ model by Zoledronic Acid (ZA) (0.1 mg/kg 3x/wk for 9 wk, ip), followed by the 1st upper left molar extraction at the 8th wk. After tooth removal, the animals were divided into 3 groups, ZA that received placebo gel or PAb gel that received 1% PAb gel, inside the dental alveolus. The control Group (CONTROL) received 0.1 mg/kg of 0.9% saline and then placebo gel. Three weeks after tooth extraction, the animals were euthanized, and maxillae were colleted for macroscopic, radiographic, histological and Raman spectomery assays. Additionally, GSK3b, beta-catenin, and Runx2 mRNA expressions were determined. Blood samples were collected for the analysis of Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) levels. PAb gel improved mucosal healing, increased the number of viable osteocytes, while it reduced the number of empty lacunae, as well as the amount of bone sequestration. Furthermore, PAb gel positively influenced the number and functionality of osteoblasts by stimulating Wnt signaling, thereby inducing bone remodeling. Additionally, PAb gel contributed to improved bone quality, as evidenced by an increase in bone mineral content, a decrease in bone solubility, and an enhancement in the quality of collagen, particularly type I collagen. PAb gel mitigated bone necrosis by stimulating of bone remodeling through Wnt signaling and concurrently improved bone quality. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on the structural and mechanical properties of the maxillary and mandibular cortical bone., Methods: The maxillary and mandibular cortical bones from CKD model rats were used in this study. CKD-induced histological, structural, and micro-mechanical alterations were assessed using histological analyses, micro-computed tomography (CT), bone mineral density (BMD) measurements, and nanoindentation tests., Results: Histological analyses indicated that CKD caused an increase in the number of osteoclasts and a decrease in the number of osteocytes in the maxilla. Micro-CT analysis revealed that CKD induced a void volume/cortical volume (%) increase, which was more remarkable in the maxilla than in the mandible. CKD also significantly decreased the BMD in the maxilla. In the nanoindentation stress-strain curve, the elastic-plastic transition point and loss modulus were lower in the CKD group than that in the control group in the maxilla, suggesting that CKD increased micro fragility of the maxillary bone., Conclusions: CKD affected bone turnover in the maxillary cortical bone. Furthermore, the maxillary histological and structural properties were compromised, and micro-mechanical properties, including the elastic-plastic transition point and loss modulus, were altered by CKD.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare benign neoplasm that can be mistaken for malignancies due to its unfamiliarity among clinicians and aggressive clinical appearance. We herein contributed by reporting an additional case of MNTI characterized by an extensive extraoral protrusion in a 2-month-old infant. The lesion involved the anterior maxilla, cheek, and infraorbital region, resulting the displacement of the nose to the contralateral side, and measuring approximately 10 cm in size. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed. After a 6-month follow-up, the patient has shown no evidence of recurrence. The rapid growth and aggressive behavior of MNTI emphasize the importance of an early diagnosis and prompt intervention in order to achieve favorable outcomes., (© 2024. Patellar fracture and dental anomaly syndrome (PADS) is a congenital bone disease of cats that is characterized by atraumatic bone fractures (most commonly the patella), the persistence of deciduous teeth, and impaction of permanent teeth. Jaw swelling due to osteomyelitis is often the reason that cats with PADS are presented for veterinary dental care. The clinical history, oral examination findings, dental radiological findings, and histopathology were evaluated for 13 cats with dental and skeletal pathology consistent with PADS, including 9 with osteomyelitis. Cats in this study were predominantly domestic shorthair (12 of 13 cats), and there was no apparent sex predilection. All cats had multiple persistent deciduous teeth and multiple impacted permanent teeth, although the number of persistent and impacted teeth varied. Osteomyelitis of the jaw typically occurred within the first 4 years of life. Osteomyelitis of the mandible was 4 times more common than osteomyelitis of the maxilla. Histologically, osteomyelitis was chronic, neutrophilic, and osteoproliferative. Necrotic bone was confirmed in 67% of osteomyelitis lesions. Histological evaluation of jaws without inflammation demonstrated abnormal amounts of unmodeled bone, abnormally dense bone, and retention of cartilage in the caudal mandible. Three cats in the study had mandibular distoclusion and 2 had concurrent paronychia. To obtain a favorable clinical outcome in PADS cats with jaw swelling, prompt and aggressive surgical treatment of osteomyelitis is required. Background: The study aims to analyse the non-calcifying/Langerhans cell rich (NCLC) subtype of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT).  METHOD: The features of cases of the NCLC subtype of CEOT noted in the English literature by PubMed as well as 3 new cases were reviewed., Results: Overall, twenty-one cases were noted. Many were women in the fourth to sixth decades (male-to-female ratio =1 to 2). Radiologically, the lesion is often unilocular with resorption of the affected teeth. Nineteen of the 21 cases occurred in the maxilla, especially the anterior portion. On pathological examination, epithelial cells are noted in non-calcifying amyloid-rich fibrous stroma. The main differential diagnosis is the amyloid subtype of central odontogenic fibroma. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the tumour epithelial cells were positive for cytokeratins and p63 and contained CD1a, S-100, and langerin-positive Langerhans cells. On a median follow-up of 2 years, one patient had a recurrence one year after curettage., Conclusion: The NCLC subtype of CEOT is unique as it contains significant numbers of Langerhans cells and has clinicopathological features distinctive from classic CEOT., (© 2023. Background: Practically every facet of the most common odontogenic tumor, odontoma, has been covered by an extensive volume of literature. However, uncertainty about its precise history has persisted., Materials and Methods: The historical evolution of odontoma was traced with reference to the original illustrations that accompanied European and American reports published at the beginning of the 19th century and also at the turn of the century., Results: The prevailing views regarding the first description of odontoma by Oudet of Paris in 1809 and the original designation "odontome" by Broca of Paris in 1867 are not entirely accurate. Before Broca's suggested term, "exostose dentaire" (dental exostosis) and "tumeur dentaire" (dental tumor) proposed by Oudet and Forget of Paris, respectively, were popular terms adopted in France, while in Briatin the terms "warty tooth" and "supernumerary teeth" proposed by Salter and Tomes of London, respectively, were widely coined. The original illustrations of complex odontoma were published by Wedl of Vienna in 1851, and in 1862 Tomes published the first drawing of compound odontoma denticles. Before the advent of diagnostic radiography in the early 1900s, spontaneous exposure or eruption of odontoma followed by secondary infection was very common. In 1887-1888, Bland Sutton of London criticized Broca's monumental research and formulated the first modern classification which, in essence, remains valid today. At that time, large osteomas of the maxilla were inappropriately classified as odontomas by many pathologists because of Bland Sutton's influential view. Interestingly, the first radiographic evidence of odontoma was published by the American oral surgeon Gilmer in 1899., Conclusion: In view of their fundamental achievements, the names of Wedl, Salter, Broca and Bland Sutton have been closely associated with the true history of odontoma., (© 2023. Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare benign but locally infiltrative tumor often misdiagnosed as other entities, such as ameloblastoma and squamous cell carcinoma, due to overlapping morphological findings. We document here the clinicopathological and imaging findings of an aggressive intraosseous SOT in the posterior left region of the maxilla in a 25-year-old male patient. On intraoral examination, the tumor extended from the region of the left lateral incisor to the upper left premolar and was covered by reddish mucosa, with discrete areas of ulceration. Imaging exams revealed an osteolytic lesion causing thinning, erosion, and buccal and lingual cortical plate perforation associated with an impacted canine. Microscopically, the tumor showed a proliferation of islands of well-differentiated squamous epithelium in a variably collagenized background. The peripheral cells of the islands were flat or slightly cuboidal and did not exhibit nuclei with peripheral palisade and reverse polarization. The diagnosis of SOT was rendered. The patient underwent surgical resection and has been under clinical follow-up for approximately 12 months with no signs of recurrence. This study clinically and histologically evaluated the outcome of a porcineapatite xenograft used to elevate the maxillary sinus floor in a severely atrophic ridge. A two-stage crestal window sinus elevation protocol was conducted in 24 patients with crestal bone ≤ 2 mm. Highly porous porcine carbonate apatite moistened with saline solution was placed in the elevated sinus cavity as the sole grafting material. Bone core biopsy samples were taken at 6, 9, and 12 months after sinus augmentation surgery (at implant placement). Treatment outcomes were assessed using microCT (μCT) and histologic analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post-hoc Dunn multiple comparison test. At 6 months after implant placement, all implants achieved good primary stability (insertion torque ≥ 30 Ncm) and successfully osseointegrated. The residual graft amount (mean ± SE) was low (11.91% ± 1.99%) at 6 months and further decreased (6.11% ± 2.64%) by 12 months. On the contrary, the amount of new bone detected was 18.94% ± 4.08% at 6 months and was significantly (P < .05) increased (40.16% ± 5.27%) at 12 months. Histologic assessment revealed osteoclasts actively resorbing the graft as well as osteoblasts actively forming new bone. In the severely atrophic maxilla, the porcine-apatite xenograft promotes new bone formation while being slowly absorbed. Within the limited sample size, the porcine-apatite xenograft seems to be a good graft material for crestal window sinus augmentation.

Objective: The present study aimed to compare histomorphometrically evaluated new bone formation, radiographically measured graft stability, and clinical implant outcome between maxillary sinus grafting with either deproteinized porcine bone mineral (DPBM) or deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM)., Materials and Methods: Thirty maxillary sinuses were initially included and randomly assigned to the test group (TG; DPBM, n = 15) or control group (CG; DBBM, n = 15). After a healing period (6 months), axially retrieved bone biopsies of the molar region were used for histological/histomorphometric analysis of new bone formations. Additionally, radiographically measured graft stability and clinical implant outcome were assessed., Results: Twenty-three sinus sites with 10 sinuses of the TG and 13 of the CG were ultimately available for data and statistical analysis. In the TG, a slightly, but yet significantly (p = .040) higher proportion of new bone formation (TG: 27.7 ± 5.6% vs. CG: 22.9 ± 5.1%) and a lesser (p = .019) amount of connective (non-mineralized) tissue (TG: 47.5 ± 9.5% vs. CG: 56.1 ± 9.5%) was found than in the CG. However, both xenografts showed comparable (n.s.) residual bone graft (TG: 23.7 ± 7.2% vs. CG: 21.1 ± 9.85.6%), bone-to-graft contacts (TG: 26.2 ± 9.8% vs. CG: 30.8 ± 13.8%), similar graft height reduction over time (TG: 12.9 ± 6.7% CG: 12.4 ± 5.8%) and implant survival/success rate (100%). At the 3-year post-loading evaluation, the peri-implant marginal bone loss (TG: 0.52 ± 0.19 mm; CG: 0.48 ± 0.15 mm) and the peri-implant health conditions (TG: 87.5%/CG: 81.2%) did not differ between implants inserted in both xenografts used., Conclusions: The use of DPBM or DBBM for maxillary sinus augmentation is associated with comparable bone formation providing stable graft dimension combined with healthy peri-implant conditions., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Objectives: To assess the skeletal and dental maxillary transverse compensation (yaw) on the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) three-dimensional reconstructed image of the skull in two groups of patients, both clinically affected by a class III malocclusion with deviation of the lower midline., Materials and Methods: An observational retrospective study was designed to analyse differences in two groups of patients, the first one was composed by patients affected by horizontal condylar hyperplasia, the second one by patients affected by dento-skeletal asymmetric class III malocclusion. Each group was composed by 15 patients. Transverse analysis was performed by measuring five landmarks (three bilateral and two uneven) with respect to a mid-sagittal plane; sagittal analysis was performed by measuring the sagittal distance on the mid-sagittal plane between bilateral points. Means were compared through inferential analysis., Results: In the condylar hyperplasia group, all differences between the two sides were not statistically significant, nor for canines' difference (P = .0817), for molars (P = .1105) or for jugular points (.05871). In the class III group, the differences between the two sides were statistically significant for molars (P = .0019) and jugular points (P = .0031) but not for canines (P = .1158). Comparing the two groups, significant differences were found only for incisors' midline deviation (P = .0343) and canine (P = .0177)., Conclusion: The study of the yaw on CBCT should be integrated into three-dimensional cephalometry and could help in differentiating the various malocclusion patterns., (© 2023 The Authors.
