Water drops moving on surfaces are not only an everyday phenomenon seen on windows but also form an essential part of many industrial processes. Previous understanding is that drop motion is dictated by viscous dissipation and activated dynamics at the contact line. Here we demonstrate that these two effects cannot fully explain the complex paths of sliding or impacting drops. To accurately determine the forces experienced by moving drops, we imaged their trajectory when sliding down a tilted surface, and applied the relevant equations of motion. We found that drop motion on low-permittivity substrates is substantially influenced by electrostatic forces. Our findings confirm that electrostatics must be taken into consideration for the description of the motion of water, aqueous electrolytes and ethylene glycol on hydrophobic surfaces. Our results are relevant for improving the control of drop motion in many applications, including printing, microfluidics, water management and triboelectric nanogenerators.

Water drops sliding down inclined planes are an everyday phenomenon and are important in many technical applications. Previous understanding is that the motion is mainly dictated by viscous and capillary forces. Here we demonstrate that, in addition to these forces, drops on hydrophobic surfaces are affected by self-generated electrostatic forces. In a novel approach to determine forces on moving drops we imaged their trajectory when sliding down a tilted surface and apply the equation of motion. We found that drop motion on low-permittivity substrates is significantly influenced by electrostatic forces. Sliding drops deposit a negative charge on the surface, which interact with the positively charged drops. We derive an analytical model to describe the force and validate it by numerical computations. The results indicate how to describe and facilitate drop motion in applications, such as in microfluidics, water management on car surfaces, and the creation of sliding drop electrical generators.

We propose a simple method of electrostatic manipulation of aqueous droplets sitting on a liquid-infused surface. The electric field is created between a pin electrode not touching the droplets and the grounded substrate. Experiments and numerical simulations are performed to study the sliding of droplets along the surface. Sliding velocities in excess of 1 cm/s can be achieved. The scaling of the sliding velocity with the applied voltage difference and the droplet volume is studied. Good agreement between the experimental and the simulation data indicates that the simulation model captures the essential physics.
