Introduction: The increasing prevalence of mental health disorders has elicited significant concern within society, particularly among adolescents who are disproportionately affected by this concerning trend. Consequently, institutions are seeking efficacious and cost-effective interventions to address this situation, while the scientific community has identified physical activity as a potential means to mitigate this epidemic. Motor self-efficacy and physical self-concept have been demonstrated to confer benefits to the mental health of young individuals, comparable to those of physical fitness. These aspects not only influence physical health but also the emotional and psychological well-being of individuals, contributing to a better overall quality of life. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the moderating role of self-perceived physical fitness in motor self-efficacy and physical self-concept, in high school physical education students. Methods: To this end, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was applied to identify the non-normality of the data and the Mann–Whitney U test to determine the differences by sex in the variables studied to subsequently perform a moderation analysis and a regression test for the physical self-concept prediction model. Results: The results showed that self-perceived physical fitness positively moderated the relationship motor self-efficacy and physical self-concept, enhancing the positive effect size of self-efficacy on physical self-concept. Conclusion: Thus, self-perceived physical fitness could be important in interventions aimed at improving physical and emotional well-being and health of adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the effects of Square Stepping Exercise (SSE) on physical and cognitive function in older people, including its effects on biomarkers, body composition and mental health, focusing only on research that assessed the efficacy of SSE-based interventions. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane databases were searched from June 2006 to June 2024 according to the PRISMA guidelines. The main search terms used were related to "older people" and "square-stepping exercise". Controlled trials that included at least one intervention group focused on SSE were included. Participants had to be healthy, without physical or cognitive impairment, and the studies published in English or Spanish. The methodological quality of the selected research was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). Results: Twelve studies were selected from a total of 444 original records, with a total sample size of 577 participants. The health parameters of the participants were homogeneous, with ages ranging from 60 to 80 years. Significant gains were reported in certain physical function assessments, including balance, lower body strength and power, gait speed and flexibility. There were also significant findings in cognitive function, particularly in general cognitive status, focused attention, response time, basic task performance, and executive function. In addition, SSE can improve metrics such as body composition, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and mental health characteristics. Conclusions: SSE has the potential to significantly improve physical function, cognitive performance and body composition, as well as provide mental health benefits and have variable effects on biomarkers and cardiovascular health. Introduction: Physical activity is a great remedy to prevent diseases, as well as to keep us healthy and improve our physical, mental, and social health. One of the many benefits of physical exercise is emotional regulation, which allows us to provide an adequate response to everyday situations in addition to controlling our own emotions. High-level athletes face multifactorial stressors that can affect their quality of life. Materials and Methods: We explored the relationship between quality of life and emotional regulation using questionnaires that measure self-reported quality of life and how they cope with stressful situations in 54 mountain athletes with a mean age of 21.88 (SD = 7.88). We also investigated gender differences and demographic location in this population, as they are subjected to very high moments of stress in competition, with the risk that this modality entails. Results: Rural areas have better physical and psychological health, with higher scores on quality of life and adaptation dimensions. Women have a worse quality of life, specifically in psychological health, with worse coping mechanisms. Conclusions: It is important to design strategies that improve these mechanisms, specifically in urban areas and the female sex, to improve their emotional regulation and quality of life.
