The telecommunications industry's deployment of billions of kilometers of optical fiber has created a vast global network that can be exploited for additional applications such as environmental sensing, quantum networking and international clock comparisons. However, for reasons such as the unidirectionality of long-haul fiber links, telecom fiber networks cannot always be adapted for important applications beyond data transmission. Fortunately, new multicore optical fibers create the opportunity for application coexistence with data traffic, creating expansive multifunctional networks. Towards that end, we propose and demonstrate the faithful transfer of ultrastable optical signals through multicore fiber in a way that is compatible with the unidirectionality of long-haul fiber optic systems, demonstrating a fractional frequency instability of 3x10-19 at 10,000 seconds. This opens the door towards intercontinental optical clock comparisons, with applications in fundamental physics and the redefinition of the second.

We report tele-seismic waves detection from multiple earthquakes on an operational subsea cable from Iceland to Ireland. We experimentally investigate transmitting high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals with carrierless and intensity-only measurements with phase retrieval (PR) receiving techniques. The intensity errors during measurement, including noise and distortions, are found to be a limiting factor for the precise convergence of the PR algorithm. To improve the PR reconstruction accuracy, we propose a distortion-aware PR scheme comprising both training and reconstruction stages. By estimating and emulating the distortion caused by various channel impairments, the proposed scheme enables enhanced agreement between the estimated and measured amplitudes throughout the PR iteration, thus resulting in improved reconstruction performance to support high-order QAM transmission. With the aid of proposed techniques, we experimentally demonstrate 50-GBaud 16QAM and 32QAM signals transmitting through a standard single-mode optical fiber (SSMF) span of 40 and 80 km, and achieve bit error rates (BERs) below the 6.25% hard decision (HD)-forward error correction (FEC) and 25% soft decision (SD)-FEC thresholds for the two modulation formats, respectively. By tuning the pilot symbol ratio and applying concatenated coding, we also demonstrate that a post-FEC data rate of up to 140 Gb/s can be achieved for both distances at an optimal pilot symbol ratio of 20%., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

We propose and implement a novel fibre sensing control device and associated sensing control plane that effectively controls backscatter and polarization-based fibre sensing. We experimentally demonstrate in a fibre network that this device and associated control plane can achieve sub-us response time.

In this work we demonstrate an FPGA-based coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry setup for cable monitoring. Using coherent detection for averaging and narrowband filtering, we significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to traditional intensity-only techniques while also enabling continuous monitoring of phase and polarization. In addition, the probe signal has constant power, avoiding the nonlinear distortions and thereby enabling continuous use without interfering with data channels. We perform a field demonstration over a trans-oceanic cable using loopback configurations present in each repeater, demonstrating measurement SNR exceeding 30 dB for all about 80 repeaters with an averaging window of 1 second. We furthermore compare cable monitoring using coherent processing to today's solutions using power-only measurements. Our results show how transitioning to coherent technology for cable monitoring can improve sensitivity and enable new types of monitoring, exploring knowledge gained from transitioning from incoherent to coherent data transmission., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Time-of-flight measurements are key to study distributed mode coupling and differential mode group delay (DMDG) in multimode fibers (MMFs). However, current approaches using regular photodetectors with limited sensitivity preclude the detection of weak modal interactions in such fibers masking interesting physical effects. Here we demonstrate the use of high-sensitivity superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) to measure the mode transfer matrix of a commercial graded-index multimode fiber. Two high performance 45-mode multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) devices served as the mode multiplexer/demultiplexer. Distributed mode coupling and DMDG among different mode groups are accurately quantified from the impulse response measurement. We also observed cladding modes of the MMF as a pedestal of the pulse in the measurement. We implement a real-time coherent transceiver with fast streaming outputs for environmental sensing. Continuous sensing using phase and equalizer outputs over 12800km of a submarine cable is demonstrated to enable time resolved spectroscopy in broad spectral range of 10mHz - 1kHz.

Receiver sensitivity is a particularly important metric in optical communication links operating at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), for example in deep-space communication, since it directly limits the maximum achievable reach and data rate. Pulse position modulation (PPM) with direct detection photon-counting detectors are the most power-efficient solution known, however, the sensitivity gain comes at the expense of reduced spectral efficiency. We show that quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation with a phase-sensitive ultralow noise pre-amplified coherent receiver outperforms other well-known power-efficient multi-dimensional coherent modulation formats, while simultaneously having higher spectral efficiency. It also results in better sensitivity than PPM for orders up to 64 with ideal direct detection using photon-counting receivers. This is because of the bit error rate characteristics favoring the QPSK format when forward error correction with a large overhead is considered.

Performance monitoring is an essential function for margin measurements in live systems. Historically, system budgets have been described by the Q-factor converted from the bit error rate (BER) under binary modulation and direct detection. The introduction of hard-decision forward error correction (FEC) did not change this. In recent years technologies have changed significantly to comprise coherent detection, multilevel modulation and soft FEC. In such advanced systems, different metrics such as (nomalized) generalized mutual information (GMI/NGMI) and asymmetric information (ASI) are regarded as being more reliable. On the other hand, Q budgets are still useful because pre-FEC BER monitoring is established in industry for live system monitoring. The pre-FEC BER is easily estimated from available information of the number of flipped bits in the FEC decoding, which does not require knowledge of the transmitted bits that are unknown in live systems. Therefore, the use of metrics like GMI/NGMI/ASI for performance monitoring has not been possible in live systems. However, in this work we propose a blind soft-performance estimation method. Based on a histogram of log-likelihood-values without the knowledge of the transmitted bits, we show how the ASI can be estimated. We examined the proposed method experimentally for 16 and 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and probabilistically shaped 16, 64, and 256-QAM in recirculating loop experiments. We see a relative error of 3.6%, which corresponds to around 0.5 dB signal-to-noise ratio difference for binary modulation, in the regime where the ASI is larger than the assumed FEC threshold. For this proposed method, the digital signal processing circuitry requires only a minimal additional function of storing the L-value histograms before the soft-decision FEC decoder., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Modern optical communication systems transmit multiple frequency channels, each operating very close to its theoretical limit. The total bandwidth can reach 10THz limited by the optical amplifiers. Maximizing spectral efficiency, the throughput per bandwidth is thus crucial. Replacing independent lasers with an optical frequency comb can enable very dense packing by overcoming relative drifts. However, to date, interference from non-ideal spectral shaping prevents exploiting the full potential of frequency combs. Here, we demonstrate comb-enabled multi-channel digital signal processing, which overcomes these limitations. Each channel is detected using an independent coherent receiver and processed at two samples-per-symbol. By accounting for the unique comb stability and exploiting aliasing in the design of the dynamic equalizer, we show that the optimal spectral shape changes, resulting in a higher signal to noise ratio that pushes the optimal symbol rate towards and even \emph{above} the channel spacing, resulting in the first example of frequency-domain super-Nyquist transmission with multi-channel detection for optical systems. The scheme is verified both in back-to-back configuration and in single span transmission of a 21 channel superchannel originating from a 25GHz-spaced frequency comb. By jointly processing 3 wavelength channels at a time, we achieve spectral efficiency beyond what is possible with independent channels. At the same time, one significantly relaxes the hardware requirements on digital-to-analog resolution and bandwidth, and well as filter tap numbers. Our results show that comb-enabled multi-channel processing can overcome the limitations of classical dense wavelength division multiplexing systems by enabling tighter spacing to reach the ultimate spectral efficiency in optical communications., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Temporal waveform manipulation is a fundamental functionality in optics and crucial for applications like optical communications, microwave photonics and quantum optics. Traditional IQ- or phase-amplitude modulators shape light by carving energy from the input lightwave and are thus fundamentally lossy, and cannot apply independent modulation to multiple input wavelengths simultaneously. Taking inspiration from the space-time duality, we produce arbitrary unitary spectro-temporal transformations on multiple temporal input vectors with a modulation structure comprising of only lossless phase modulation and dispersive allpass filtering. The bandwidth of the output waveforms is not restricted by the driving electronics and independent transformations can be performed simultaneously on multiple orthogonal inputs such as spectrally separated frequency tones. This overcomes the main limitations of traditional electro-optic modulators and offers fundamental new insight into temporal wave manipulation.

Fiber-optical networks are a crucial telecommunication infrastructure in society. Wavelength division multiplexing allows for transmitting parallel data streams over the fiber bandwidth, and coherent detection enables the use of sophisticated modulation formats and electronic compensation of signal impairments. In the future, optical frequency combs may replace multiple lasers used for the different wavelength channels. We demonstrate two novel signal processing schemes that take advantage of the broadband phase coherence of optical frequency combs. This approach allows for a more efficient estimation and compensation of optical phase noise in coherent communication systems, which can significantly simplify the signal processing or increase the transmission performance. Optical communication systems have come through five orders of magnitude improvement in data rate over the last three decades. The increased demand in data traffic and the limited optoelectronic component bandwidths have led to state-of-the-art systems employing hundreds of separate lasers in each transmitter. Given the limited optical amplifier bandwidths, focus is now shifting to maximize the spectral efficiency, SE. However, the frequency jitter from neighbouring lasers results in uncertainties of the exact channel wavelength, requiring large guardbands to avoid catastrophic channel overlap. Optical frequency combs with optimal line spacings (typically around 10-50 GHz) can overcome these limitations and maximize the SE. Recent developments in microresonator-based soliton frequency combs (hereafter microcombs) promise a compact, power efficient multi-wavelength and phase-locked light source for optical communications. Here we demonstrate a microcomb-based communication link achieving state-of-the-art spectral efficiency that has previously only been possible with bulk-optics systems. Compared to previous microcomb works in optical communications, our microcomb features a narrow line spacing of 22.1 GHz. In addition, it provides a four order-of-magnitude more stable line spacing compared to free-running lasers. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is sufficient for information encoding using state-of-the-art high-order modulation formats. This enables us to demonstrate transmission of a 12 Tb/s superchannel over distances ranging from a single 82 km span with an SE exceeding 10 bits/s/Hz, to 2000 km with an SE higher than 6 bits/s/Hz. These results demonstrate that microcombs can attain the SE that will spearhead future optical networks.

Microresonator frequency combs harness the nonlinear Kerr effect in an integrated optical cavity to generate a multitude of phase-locked frequency lines. The line spacing can reach values in the order of 100 GHz, making it an attractive multi-wavelength light source for applications in fiber-optic communications. Depending on the dispersion of the microresonator, different physical dynamics have been observed. A recently discovered comb state corresponds to the formation of mode-locked dark pulses in a normal-dispersion microcavity. Such dark-pulse combs are particularly compelling for advanced coherent communications since they display unusually high power conversion efficiency. Here, we report the first coherent transmission experiments using 64-quadrature amplitude modulation encoded onto the frequency lines of a dark-pulse comb. The high conversion efficiency of the comb enables transmitted optical signal-to-noise ratios above 33 dB while maintaining a laser pump power level compatible with state-of-the-art hybrid silicon lasers.

Microresonator-based frequency combs are strong contenders as light sources for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Recent demonstrations have shown the potential of microresonator combs for replacing tens of WDM lasers with a single laser-pumped device. These experiments relied on microresonators displaying anomalous dispersion. Devices operating in the normal dispersion offer the prospect of attaining high power conversion efficiency - an aspect that will be crucial in the future for enabling energy-efficient coherent communications with higher order modulation formats or lighting several spatial channels in space-division multiplexing. Here we report the experimental demonstration of coherent communications using normal dispersion microresonator combs. With polarization multiplexed (PM) quadrature phase-shift keying, we transmitted data over more than 6300 km in single-mode fiber. In a second experiment, we reached beyond 700 km with PM 16 quadrature amplitude modulation format and an aggregate data rate above 900 Gbit/s assuming 6% error correction overhead.
