In the paper, analysis of the curved profile measurement accuracy is described. Since there was no CAD model or other reference profile for the measured detail, the first step was to generate the reference contour of the cam using the technical drawing and tolerance requirements. The test campaign consisted of three experiments aimed at determining the effect of scanning velocity on the results of form deviation δ measurement, evaluation of deviation δ measurement uncertainty and the measurement repeatability. The scanning time was checked, too. The obtained results demonstrated feasibility of the chosen CMM and measurement strategy. It was found also that the measurement uncertainty did not depend on the scanning sampling step from 0.05 to 0.2 mm, and the true measurement time was for 30-40% longer than that expected from the nominal scanning velocity. The paper presents the results of the investigations on the direction-dependent accuracy of the point identification during contact probe measurements with a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Considering the contact point identified by an orthogonal to the surface probe movement, the transformation of coordinates was made in order to calculate the displacement of the measured point. As a result, the positioning accuracy was estimated in three axes. The experiments demonstrated a strong dependence of the displacement on the declination angle. Moreover, it was found that the directional surface texture which provided different roughness in perpendicular directions, had an impact on the positioning accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid – β extracellular plaques and tau interfibrillar tangles, leading to memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. With dementia posing a growing global health concern, there is an urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address its challenges. The economic burden of dementia is projected to rise significantly, emphasizing the necessity for collaborative efforts in research and healthcare. In the United States alone, millions are affected by AD , with prevalence increasing with age and even affecting younger individuals. The complexity of AD involves intricate biological processes, including the aggregation of amyloid beta, oxidative stress, and metal ion dysregulation. Metal ions, particularly those from copper, iron, and zinc, play pivotal roles in AD pathology, influencing Aβ deposition and tau protein accumulation. Current treatments offer symptomatic relief but do not address the underlying disease mechanisms. This paper explores the potential of various chelating compounds to target metal ions involved in AD pathology. N -acylhydrazones, morpholine, chrysin, quinoline, oxindole, cyclam, catechol-based, and quinazolinone-based derivatives show promising chelation activity and therapeutic effects. Metal chelation therapy offers a targeted approach to AD treatment by addressing the core pathology. By selectively binding to metal ions implicated in disease progression, chelators may minimize side effects associated with broad-spectrum treatments. Additionally, chelators may offer neuroprotective effects beyond metal binding, further enhancing their therapeutic potential. Overall, metal chelation therapy presents a promising strategy in combating AD , with the potential to significantly impact disease progression and improve patient outcomes. In the paper, an issue of CMM measurement strategy of the sleeves and pins designed for wear tests in the cycloidal drive. The measurement strategy was proposed, based on initial out-of-roundness measurement in scanning mode. Proposed approach ensured that the pin was measured along its entire 40 mm length with only small area of fixation ca. 5 mm left out, and all probing points for cylindricity deviation assessment were collected in one fixation. It was demonstrated that the cylindricity and roundness measurement results based on 8, 16 and 48 probing points provided sufficient data for further wear analysis. This study investigates the self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles into a flat nanocomposite surface with concealed magnetic patterns. The application of a multilayer stamping medium and the presence of a magnetic field gradient would enable the attraction and organization of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) onto predefined areas, corresponding to a pre-fabricated magnetic layer. The experimental approach involved preparing patterned surfaces by applying a multilayer of poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as a stamping medium. The SPIONs selectively adhered to the surface, mirroring the underlying magnetic layer shape. Subsequently, these SPION were subjected to an 80 °C treatment in the presence of an external magnetic field to enhance their magnetic properties, and then covered with a polystyrene layer. Using atomic force microscopy, magnetic force microscopy and dark field mode optical microscopy we demonstrated that obtained patterned magnetic field gradients are strong enough to attract and organize magnetic material on top of them, even when being covered with polymeric layers. Moreover, our findings show that the oriented deposition of magnetic nanoparticles is primarily determined by the strength of magnetic interactions between the pattern and nanoparticles, independently of surface topography (with roughness of 0.21 ± 0.06 nm) or Brownian motions. Abstract: The Parameterised Model Checking Problem asks whether an implementation satisfies a specification for all instantiations of parameter . In general, can determine numerous entities: the number of processes used in a network, the type of data, the capacities of buffers, etc. The main theme of this paper is automation of uniform verification of a subclass of PMCP with the parameter of the first kind, i.e. where it determines the number of processes used in a network. We use CSP as our formalism. Counter abstraction is a technique that replaces a concrete state space by an abstract one, where each abstract state is a tuple of integer counters such that for each , counts how many node processes are currently in the -th state. Each counter is given a finite threshold and we interpret as there being or more processes in the -th state. Standard counter abstraction techniques require all processes to be identical, which means that nodes cannot use node identifiers. In this paper we present how counter abstraction techniques can be extended to processes that make use of node identifiers in a symmetrical way. Our method creates a process that is independent of and is refined by for all sufficiently large , where maps all (sufficiently large) instantiations of the parameter to some fixed type. By transitivity of refinement, testing if refines implies that is refined by . Then, using the type reduction theory from Mazur and Lowe (2012) [29], we can deduce that is refined by for all sufficiently large , thus obtaining a positive answer to the original verification problem. Interaction of tetracoordinated nickel(I) centers generated inside the channels of ZSM-5 zeolite with carbon monoxide (12,13CO, pCO < 1 Torr) led to the formation of T-shaped, top-on monocarbonyl adducts with a unique trigonal nickel core, supported by two oxygen donor ligands. The mechanism of the formation of the {NiI−CO}ZSM-5 species was accounted for by a quantitative molecular orbital correlation diagram of CO ligation. Detailed electronic and magnetic structure of this adduct was obtained from comprehensive DFT calculations, validated by quantitative reproduction of its continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW-EPR), hyperfine sublevel correlation (HYSCORE), and IR fingerprints, using relativistic Pauli and ZORA-SOMF/B3LYP methods. Molecular analysis of the stretching frequency, νCO = 2109 cm−1, g and A(13C) tensors (gxx = 2.018, gyy = 2.380, gzz = 2.436, Axx = +1.0 ± 0.3 MHz, Ayy = −3.6 ± 0.9 MHz, Azz = −1.6 ± 0.3 MHz) and Q(27Al) parameters (e2Qq/h = −13 MHz and η = 0.8) supported by quantum chemical modeling revealed that the Ni−CO bond results from the π overlap between the low-laying π(2p) CO states with the 3dxz and 3dyz orbitals, with a small σ contribution due to the overlap of σ(2p+2s) orbital and a protruding lobe of the in-plane 3dxz orbital. Two types of orbital channels (associated with the σ and π overlap) of the electron and spin density flows within the {NiI−CO} unit were identified. A bathochromic shift of the νCO stretching vibration was accounted for by resolving quantitatively the separate contributions due to the σ donation and π back-donation, whereas the 13C hyperfine coupling was rationalized by incongruent α and β spin flows via the σ and π channels. As a result the very nature of the carbon−metal bond in the NiI−CO adduct and the molecular backbone of the corresponding spectroscopic parameters were revealed with unprecedented accuracy. Innovatively, four-layer, active biopolymer films based on furcellaran, chitosan and gelatin as well as active compounds (curcumin, capsaicin, AgNPs, montmorillonite and gelatin hydrolysate) were obtained. The films showed strong antioxidant effects. Adding active ingredients caused increased enthalpy change value (ΔH) and thermal stability. The potential application of the film was analysed by storing Atlantic salmon fillets in the material. The films showed an active effect. This effect was the strongest during the first 3 days of storage. Compared to the synthetic LDPE film, the active film showed a total 0.81 log/CFU lower microbial count on the 12th day of storage. In this study, for the first time, double-layer films based on furcellaran and gelatin were obtained, in which the 1st layer of furcellaran was enriched with various plant extracts. The aim of this work was to improve the composition of the developed innovative packaging material by using two layers of biopolymer complexes and analysing the composites to determine the effect of different model plant extracts on the physicochemical properties of the double-layered materials. Furthermore, the hypothesis that positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) could be correlated with gas barrier properties was verified. The addition of plant extracts significantly influenced the physicochemical parameters of the obtained double-layered materials. The lowest solubility was noted in films with the addition of garlic extract (58.40%) and black pepper extract (59.26%) which also had the lowest water content (8.88%). The film with garlic extract also had the lowest oxygen transfer rate (OTR) value after 6 months of storage which is consistent with PALS. The presented data suggest the possibility of correlating PALS results with the gas barrier properties. Tests carried out using this method will facilitate the selection of new potential ingredients when designing packaging materials based on biopolymers, thus, making it possible to obtain new-generation matrices. • Iodide-containing semiconductors are core materials in biomimetic research. • Artificial photosynthesis and unconventional computing require tailorable materials. • Perovskites are suitable for other energy-saving technologies. Unconventional computing and artificial photosynthesis seem to be completely unrelated fields of research. However, both technologies try to sustain the development of our civilization despite the flood of information and limited energy resources. In this review, we will show that the same materials – namely organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites and other iodine-based semiconductors – are materials of choice for both fields of scientific and technological activity. This contribution reviews the most up-to-date achievements in the fields of artificial photosynthesis and neuromimetic unconventional computing that utilize metal halide perovskites or other heavy metal-halogen compounds as active materials. Recent advances about photocatalysis and perovskite photovoltaics are also added to demonstrate the versatility of the applications that result from the peculiar geometric and electronic structures of iodine-based semiconductors. Mechanistic aspects of model selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with C 2 H 4 over Ni/ZSM-5 zeolite were investigated by means of advanced correlation EPR/HYSCORE and IR time-resolved Rapid-Scan 2D COS techniques combined with DFT/CASSCF calculations. It was shown that two types of the active centers, bare isolated Ni2+ and dual oxo Ni2+–O2––Ni2+, are involved in this reaction, acting in different ways. NO interaction with the former center results in a Ni2+–NOδ+ moiety, the unique nature of which was ascertained by HYSCORE studies, and accounted for by the spin-polarized DFT/CASSCF calculations in detail. The electrophilic nature of the bound NOδ+ moiety is crucial for its successful insertion into the >C=C< bond of ethylene. This process involves formation of isolated nickel adducts with the co-ligated C 2 H 4 and NO molecules, and the resultant cyanide and isocyanate intermediates are next hydrolyzed into ammonia or oxidized by NO x. The dual nickel-oxo centers provide the active sites for development of nitrate/nitro species and next mixed-ligand nitrate/nitro-ammonia adducts. Selective catalytic reduction results from the NO x /cyanide and nitrate/nitro-ammonia routes, which both are featured by reversal of the partial charge on the nitrogen atom from positive in Nδ+O into negative in –CNδ–/–Nδ–CO or Nδ–H 3 , giving rise to the key nitrogen charge comproportionation step. In both pathways, the nickel(II) mononitrosyls play a pivotal function as the primary source of the N–containing intermediates (–CN/–NCO/NH 3). This study investigates the impacts of structure and composition on the optical and electronic properties of a series of pyridinium-based bismuth iodide complexes. Organic substrates with various functional groups, such as 4-aminopyridine (4-Ampy), 4-methylpyridine (4-Mepy), 4-dimethylaminopyridine (4-Dmapy), and 4-pyridinecarbonitrile (4-CNpy) with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups at the para position of the pyridine ring were employed. Crystallographic analysis reveals various bismuth iodide structures, including 1D chains and discrete 0D motifs. The optical band gap of these materials, identified via diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and verified with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, is influenced by the crystal packing and stabilising interactions. Through a comprehensive analysis, including Hirshfeld surface (HS) and void assessment, the study underscores the influence of noncovalent intermolecular interactions on crystal packing. Spectroscopic evaluations provide insights into electronic interactions, elucidating the role of electron donor and acceptor substituents within the lattice. Thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG–DTA) indicates structural stability up to 250 °C. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) reveals significant conductivity in the range of 10–20 mS per pixel at 298.15 K. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Bi L3 edge indicates a similar oxidation state and electronic environment across all samples, underscoring the role of bismuth centres surrounded by iodides. Memristors possess non-volatile memory, adjusting their electrical resistance to the current that flows through them and allowing switching between high and low conducting states. This technology could find applications in fields such as IT, consumer electronics, computing, sensors, and medicine. In this paper, we report successful electrodeposition of thin-film materials consisting of copper tungstate and copper molybdate (CuWO4 and Cu3Mo2O9), which showed notable memristive properties. Material characterisation was performed with techniques such as XRD, XPS, and SEM. The electrodeposited materials exhibited the ability to switch between low and high resistive states during varied cyclic scans and short-term impulses. The retention time of these switched states was also explored. Using these materials, the effects seen in biological systems, specifically spike timing-dependent plasticity, were simulated, being based on analogue operation of the memristors to achieve multiple conductivity states. Bio-inspired simulations performed directly on the material could possibly offer energy and time savings for classical computations. In the present study, the structure, thermal stability, conductive properties, and antimicrobial activity of silver(I) complexes with nitrile ligands were investigated. For the construction of the materials, 2‐cyanopyridine (2‐cpy), 4‐cyanopyridine (4‐cpy), 1,2‐dicyanobenzene (1,2‐dcb), and 1,3‐dicyanobenzene (1,3‐dcb) were used in addition to the silver nitrite and nitrate. Four new compounds were isolated and structurally characterized: one molecular complex [Ag4(1,2‐dcb)4(NO3)4], two 1‐D coordination polymers [Ag(2‐cpy)2(NO2)]∞, [Ag2(1,3‐dcb)2(NO3)2]∞, and one 3‐D coordination polymer [Ag(4‐cpy)(NO2)]∞. The results indicate that the nitrile complexes display good antimicrobial properties against the tested bacterial and fungal strains. The presence of weakly coordinating CN groups increases the release of silver ions into the bacterial and yeast cell environments. Moreover, these materials exhibit unusual electrical properties in thin‐layer devices. On the other hand, the nitrite and nitrate counterions give rise to the low thermal stability of the complexes. Double-layered active films based on furcellaran (1st layer—FUR), chitosan, and gelatin hydrolysates (2nd layer—CHIT+HGEL) were successfully prepared. Bioactive ingredients were added to the 1st film layer: AgNPs, which were synthesized in situ with yerba mate extract; montmorillonite clay (MMT); and different loads of ethanolic curcumin (CUR) extract enriched with rosemary essential oil (REO). SEM images confirmed the presence of AgNPs with a size distribution of 94.96 ± 3.33 nm throughout the films, and AFM and SEM photos indicated that the higher substance concentrations had rougher and more porous film microstructures. However, the water vapor transmission rate was reduced only at the lowest load of this ingredient. Despite the tensile strength of the films having decreased, the incorporation of the compounds showed a tendency towards reducing the modulus of elasticity, resulting in a lower stiffness of the composites. The addition of CUR and AgNPs improved the UV light barrier properties of the materials. The presented films showed quick reactions to changes in the pH value (from orange to red along with an increase in pH from 2 to 10), which indicates their potential use as indicators for monitoring the freshness of food products. Composite No. 2 showed the highest antimicrobial potential, while none of the presented films showed an antifungal effect. Finally, the antioxidant activities of the films increased dramatically at higher AgNP and CUR loads, suggesting an outstanding potential for active food packaging applications. This paper is devoted to the sintering process of Al2O3–SiO2–ZrO2 ceramics. The studied method was electroconsolidation with directly applied electric current. This method provides substantial improvements to the mechanical properties of the sintered samples compared to the traditional sintering in the air. The research covered elemental and phase analysis of the samples, which revealed phase transition of high-alumina solid solutions into mullite and corundum. Zirconia was represented mainly by tetragonal phase, but monoclinic phase was present, too. Electroconsolidation enabled samples to reach a density of 3.0 g/cm3 at 1300 °C, while the sample prepared by traditional sintering method obtained it only at 1700 °C. For the composite Al2O3—20 wt.% SiO2—10 wt.% ZrO2 fabricated by electroconsolidation, it was demonstrated that fracture toughness was higher by 20–30%, and hardness was higher by 15–20% compared to that of samples sintered traditionally. Similarly, the samples fabricated by electroconsolidation exhibited elastic modulus E higher by 15–20%. The hypothesis was proposed that the difference in mechanical and physical properties could be attributed to the peculiarities of phase formation processes during electroconsolidation. The use of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the superoxide intermediates, generated by end-on and side-on adsorption of the naturally abundant and O-enriched dioxygen on catalytic surfaces is discussed. Basic mechanisms of O radical formation via a cationic redox mechanism, an anionic redox mechanism, and an electroprotic mechanism are illustrated with selected oxide-based systems of catalytic relevance. Representative experimental spectra of various complexities are analyzed and their diagnostic features have been identified and interpreted. The molecular nature of the g and A tensors of the electrostatic and covalent superoxide adducts is discussed in detail within the classic and density functional theory based approaches. Triple-layer films based on furcellaran were successfully produced, where the middle layer was enriched with a hazelnut oil microemulsion. SEM images showed good embedding of the emulsion in the furcellaran layer. The addition of microemulsions significantly decreased the thermal and mechanical properties of the films, where the tensile strength values decreased, while the elasticity values of the film were improved. The presence of the emulsion increased the hydrophilicity of the film surface. The developed films in the form of sachets were used for packaging and storing cod liver oil. Fish oil was stored in refrigerated conditions without access to light and at room temperature (22 °C ± 1 °C) with access to light for 3 months. The acid (AV), iodine (IV) and peroxide values (PV), as well as the profile of fatty acids, were determined for the cod liver oil samples. It was shown that the cod liver oil samples had a similar value of the acid number during storage, however, over time, the IV and PV values increased statistically significantly, which indicates the ongoing process of fat rancidity. Furthermore, 23 compounds were identified in the fatty acid profile. It was shown that the profile of fatty acids in the stored fish oil changed, and the direction of these changes varied and generally, significantly depended on the film type and conditions in which the fat was stored. This study shows the possibility to obtain biodegradable packaging based on furcellaran enriched with a hazelnut oil microemulsion but also underline how important it is to check the presented packaging material in terms of its potential application. This article reports on the activation of dioxygen on nickel(I) dispersed inside the nanopores of the ZSM-5 zeolite, which can be regarded as a heterogeneous mimetic system (zeozyme) for Ni-bearing enzymes. The side-on η²-coordination of the resulting nickel-bound superoxo adduct was ascertained by detailed analysis of the EPR spectra of both 16O2 and 17O2 species supported by computer simulations of the spectra and relativistic DFT calculations of the EPR signatures. Molecular analysis of the g and A(17O) tensors (gxx = 2.0635, gyy = 2.0884, gzz = 2.1675; ∣Axx∣ ≈ 1.0 mT, ∣Ayy∣ = 5.67 mT, ∣Azz∣ ≈ 1.3 mT) and quantum chemical modeling revealed an unusual electronic and magnetic structure of the observed adduct (with gzz(gmax) > gyy(gmid) > gxx(gmin) and the largest O-17 hyperfine splitting along the gmid direction) in comparison to the known homogeneous and enzymatic nickel-superoxo systems. It is best described as a mixed metalloradical with two supporting oxygen donor ligands and even triangular spin-density redistribution within the η2-{NiO2}11 magnetophore. The semioccupied molecular orbital (SOMO) is constituted by highly covalent δ overlap between the out-of-plane 2p(πg*) MO of dioxygen and the 3dx²-y² MO of nickel. By means of the extended transition state-natural orbitals for the chemical valence approach (ETS-NOCV), three distinct orbital channels (associated with σ,π, and δ overlap) of congruent and incongruent charge and spin density flows within the η²-{NiO2}11 unit, contributing jointly to activation of the attached dioxygen, were identified. Their individual energetic relevance was quantified, which allowed for explaining the oxygen binding mechanism with unprecedented accuracy. The nature and structure sensitivity of the g tensor was rationalized in terms of the contributions due to the magnetic field-induced couplings of the relevant molecular orbitals that control the g-tensor anisotropy. The calculated O-17 hyperfine coupling constants correspond well with the experimental parameters, supporting assignment of the adduct. To the best of our knowledge, the η²-{NiO2}11 superoxo adducts have not been observed yet for digonal mononuclear nickel(I) centers supported by oxygen donor ligands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Multi-layer films were developed on the basis of furcellaran. • The added film additives are an element of activities aimed at improving quality and gave the films active properties. • Storing fish in the created films demonstrated better microbiological parameters. To improve the quality of multi-layer film, four-layer films based on furcellaran and active ingredients: gelatin hydrolysate, curcumin, capsaicin, montmorillonite and AgNPs, were produced in an innovative manner. The films were characterised by SEM and AFM analysis. Along with an increase in the concentration of active ingredients, the structure of the film becomes less homogeneous, which may affect the functional properties. The objective of the study was to analyse changes in the functional properties of the newly-obtained films and to verify their potential as packaging materials for fish products. With the increase in active ingredient concentration, water properties also improved, but there were no noticeable significant effects on mechanical properties. For antioxidant properties, the obtained values were within 1.04–2.74 mM Trolox/mg (FRAP) and 7.67–40.49% (DPPH). The obtained multi-layer films were examined with regard to the shelf-life of salmon. For this purpose, salmon fillets were packed in films having good antioxidant and functional properties. The films were effective in microorganism growth inhibition responsible for fillet spoilage during storage. The microorganism number in the active film-stored samples was lower by 0.13 log CFU/g on day 12 versus the control. However, film application did not retard lipid oxidation in the salmon fillets. Background & Aims: Functional gastrointestinal disorders are prevalent worldwide and alterations of gutbrain axis and intestinal barrier integrity may play a pivotal role in both the pathophysiology and clinical course of these bowel malfunctions. We aimed to assess the prevalence of abdominal pain in a selected adult population of Poland to determine potential environmental factors associated with gastrointestinal complaints. Methods: There were 1479 individuals - 657 women (44.42%) and 822 men (55.58%), aged 24.20±6.08 years. The responders fulfilled an authors' questionnaire based on Rome II and III criteria focused on the abdominal pain prevalence and environmental factors involved in its occurrence. Results: The frequency of abdominal pain was found to be as high as 19.2%. Male gender (n=822) and basic education level (n=151) lowered the risk of abdominal pain occurrence (OR=0.7, p<0.012 and OR=0.5, p<0.021, respectively). Psychological distress, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antibiotics usage were found as risk factors of abdominal pain (OR=2.503, p<0.01; OR=3.308, p<0.01; OR=3.105, p<0.01, respectively). Conclusions: Abdominal pain is prevalent in young adult inhabitants of Poland, especially in women. Intense psychological stress, as well as PPIs and antibiotics usage elevate the risk. This review focuses on the synthesis, properties and selected applications of heavy pnictogen chalcohalides, i.e. compounds of the MQX stoichiometry, where M = As, Sb, and Bi; Q = O, S, Se, and Te; and X = F, Cl, Br and I. The first section focuses on their synthesis and crystal structures, and the second section discusses the electronic structure on the basis of quantum chemical modelling and selected experimental data. Finally, the third section discusses their electrical, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties and applications. In contrast to perovskites, chalcopyrites and kesterites, chalcohalides have attracted relatively less attention, but their structure and properties are well suited for numerous applications. [Display omitted] Sensing technology is an important aspect of information processing. Current development in artificial intelligence systems (especially those aimed at medical and environmental applications) requires a lot of data on the chemical composition of biological fluids or environmental samples. These complex matrices require advanced sensing devices, and photoelectrochemical ones seem to have potential to overcome at least some of the obstacles. Furthermore, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology for autonomous robotics requires technology mimicking human senses, also those operating at the molecular level, such as gustation and olfaction. Again, photoelectrochemical sensing can provide some suitable solutions. In this review, we introduce the idea of integration of photoelectrochemical sensors with some unconventional computing paradigm – reservoir computing. This approach should not only boost the performance of the sensors itself, but also open new pathways through science. Integration of sensing devices with computing systems will also contribute to a better understanding (or at least mimicking) of the human senses and neuromorphic sensory information processing. Although reservoir systems can be considered magic "black boxes" and their operation is at the same time simple and hard to comprehend, this combination is expected to open a new era of effective information harvesting and processing systems. • Triple-layered films were successfully prepared using the solution casting method. • The prepared films had improved UV–vis barrier properties and antioxidant activity. • The color of the film responded to pH change. • The films improved the storage quality of tomatoes. Triple-layered, pH-sensitive and active films based on furcellaran (FUR), chitosan (CHIT) and gelatin hydrolysates (HGEL) were obtained for the first time. Curcumin ethanol extract (CUR) enriched with lemongrass essential oil (LEO) in three concentrations was added to the middle layer of the film. SEM and AFM analysis confirmed the formation of 3 layers, and CUR-LEO was evenly dispersed in the 2nd layer. The addition of CUR-LEO influenced the color of the surface and improved the UV blocking properties of the film. However, the mechanical and water vapor barrier properties remained unchanged. The CUR-LEO demonstrated antibacterial properties against bacteria and fungi. The antioxidant activity of the films increased along with the increasing concentrations of CUR-LEO. The presented films were able to effectively extend the storage life of tomatoes. Moreover, the colored films had the monitoring freshness effect with a distinct color change during carp storage. In this paper, the impact of water activity regarding storage environment on mechanical and water properties is presented, as well as the structural and morphological features of triple-layered films. Furcellaran (FUR), chitosan (CHIT) and carp skin gelatin hydrolysates (HGEL) were used for the production of the film. The films were made using a casting method, in which three successive stages were applied. First stage: preparation (pouring onto the mould) of 1st layer – FUR + HGEL, second: 2nd layer preparation (pouring onto 1st layer) – FUR, and third: 3rd layer (pouring onto 1st layer) – CHIT + HGEL. The second and third steps began after gelation of the previously poured layer. The drying process of the film was carried out for 24 h under a fume hood at room temperature. The mechanical properties of control sample was: tensile strength The control sample has tensile strength 7.76 ± 0.35 MPa, elongation at break – 3.69 ± 0.33%, maximum breaking load – 15.86 ± 0.58 N. Water properties of control sample – water absorption a solubility were 25.80 ± 1.14% and 52.91 ± 1.31%, respectively. Reducing the water content in the film increased its tensile strength (from 7.76 ± 0.35 MPa for the control film to 14.36 ± 0.07 MPa) and elongation at break (from 3.69 ± 0.34% for the control film to 8.74 ± 0.69%). Reducing water content in the film also decreased its ability to absorb water, which is crucial in the case of biodegradable films due to their hydrophilic nature. The multimolecular sorption of the films was described using the BET model. Structural and morphological changes observed on the basis of surface and cross-section photographs of the films confirm the negative impact of high water activity on the film and its mechanical parameters. Fabrication of alumina–tungsten carbide nanocomposite was investigated. Characteristics of the densification and sintering were analyzed considering both the nano-size particle starting powders and the processing stages. Different heating rates were generated during densification and consolidation with a maximal load was applied only after a temperature of 1000 °C was reached. Due to the varying dominance of different physical processes affecting the grains, appropriate heating rates and pressure at different stages ensured that a structure with submicron grains was obtained. With directly applied alternating current, it was found that the proportion Al2O3 (50 wt.%)–WC provided the highest fracture toughness, and a sintering temperature above 1600 °C was found to be disadvantageous. The corrosion behavior of two silicon steels with the same chemical composition but different grains sizes (i.e., average grain area of 115.6 and 4265.9 µm2) was investigated by metallographic microscope, gravimetric, electrochemical and surface analysis techniques. The gravimetric and electrochemical results showed that the corrosion rate increased with decreasing the grain size. The scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopyanalyses revealed formation of a more homogeneous and compact corrosion product layer on the coarse-grained steel compared to fine-grained material. The Volta potential analysis, carried out on both steels, revealed formation of micro-galvanic sites at the grain boundaries and triple junctions. The results indicated that the decrease in corrosion resistance in the fine-grained steel could be attributed to the higher density of grain boundaries (e.g., a higher number of active sites and defects) brought by the refinement. The higher density of active sites at grain boundaries promote the metal dissolution of the and decreased the stability of the corrosion product layerformed on the metal surface. We have experimentally studied the influence of pulsed laser deposition parameters on the morphological and electrophysical parameters of vanadium oxide films. It is shown that an increase in the number of laser pulses from 10,000 to 60,000 and an oxygen pressure from 3 × 10−4 Torr to 3 × 10−2 Torr makes it possible to form vanadium oxide films with a thickness from 22.3 ± 4.4 nm to 131.7 ± 14.4 nm, a surface roughness from 7.8 ± 1.1 nm to 37.1 ± 11.2 nm, electron concentration from (0.32 ± 0.07) × 1017 cm−3 to (42.64 ± 4.46) × 1017 cm−3, electron mobility from 0.25 ± 0.03 cm2/(V·s) to 7.12 ± 1.32 cm2/(V·s), and resistivity from 6.32 ± 2.21 Ω·cm to 723.74 ± 89.21 Ω·cm. The regimes at which vanadium oxide films with a thickness of 22.3 ± 4.4 nm, a roughness of 7.8 ± 1.1 nm, and a resistivity of 6.32 ± 2.21 Ω·cm are obtained for their potential use in the fabrication of ReRAM neuromorphic systems. It is shown that a 22.3 ± 4.4 nm thick vanadium oxide film has the bipolar effect of resistive switching. The resistance in the high state was (89.42 ± 32.37) × 106 Ω, the resistance in the low state was equal to (6.34 ± 2.34) × 103 Ω, and the ratio RHRS/RLRS was about 14,104. The results can be used in the manufacture of a new generation of micro- and nanoelectronics elements to create ReRAM of neuromorphic systems based on vanadium oxide thin films. In this study, the effect of the addition of silicon carbide to alumina ceramics commonly used in cutting tool applications is addressed. Performance of Al2O3–SiC composite cutting inserts during the machining of hardened steels and ductile iron was compared to the results obtained for a cutting tool made out of 99 wt.% Al2O3, Al2O3–TiC, Al2O3–TiC–ZrO2, and Al2O3–TiN. In almost all tests, the composite with silicon carbide demonstrated better wear resistance, longer tool lifetime, and the ability to cut at higher speeds. The enhanced properties of cutting tools with SiC can be attributed to the morphology and dimensions of the inclusions in the matrix as well as to the strength of the interphase boundaries, small porosity, and lack of high inner stresses in the volume.
