Abstract

Cancer patients are at an increased risk of developing severe consequences due to the COVID-19 infection. However, psychological outcomes in this population have been overlooked in the literature. The present study aims to identify significant psychological differences between gynecological cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy before and during the pandemic. Additionally, we explore the correlations between COVID-19-related concerns and anxiety, depression, distress, and quality of life levels. Forty-two patients completed the STAI-Y, the EORTC QLQ-C30, the BDI II, the DT, and an ad-hoc questionnaire that investigated COVID-19-related concerns. The analyses did not show significant differences in the psychometric scales between the two groups, highlighting a considerable resilience against mental health and quality of life deterioration during the COVID-19 pandemic in gynecologic cancer patients. However, COVID-19-related concerns were positively associated with anxiety and inversely related to emotional functioning levels. These results emphasize the importance of a comprehensive patient care and the need to implement a multidisciplinary approach that includes psychological support in the treatment plan. Moreover, it is essential to encourage clear communication to convey comprehensive information about the impact of the pandemic on physical and psychological levels, as well as to offer psychoeducational tools to face the pandemic.

Abstract

Diabetes is an increasing global health burden with the highest prevalence (24.0%) observed in elderly people. Older diabetic adults have a greater risk of hospitalization and several geriatric syndromes than older nondiabetic adults. For these conditions, special care is required in prescribing therapies including anti- diabetes drugs. Aim of this study was to evaluate the appropriateness and the adherence to safety recommendations in the prescriptions of glucose-lowering drugs in hospitalized elderly patients with diabetes. Data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the REgistro POliterapie–Società Italiana Medicina Interna (REPOSI) that collected clinical information on patients aged ≥ 65 years acutely admitted to Italian internal medicine and geriatric non-intensive care units (ICU) from 2010 up to 2019. Prescription appropriateness was assessed according to the 2019 AGS Beers Criteria and anti-diabetes drug data sheets.Among 5349 patients, 1624 (30.3%) had diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. At admission, 37.7% of diabetic patients received treatment with metformin, 37.3% insulin therapy, 16.4% sulfonylureas, and 11.4% glinides. Surprisingly, only 3.1% of diabetic patients were treated with new classes of anti- diabetes drugs. According to prescription criteria, at admission 15.4% of patients treated with metformin and 2.6% with sulfonylureas received inappropriately these treatments. At discharge, the inappropriateness of metformin therapy decreased (10.2%, P < 0.0001). According to Beers criteria, the inappropriate prescriptions of sulfonylureas raised to 29% both at admission and at discharge. This study shows a poor adherence to current guidelines on diabetes management in hospitalized elderly people with a high prevalence of inappropriate use of sulfonylureas according to the Beers criteria.

Abstract

The “Healthcare workers’ wellbeing [Benessere Operatori]” project is an exploratory longitudinal study assessing healthcare workers’ mental health at three different time points over a 14-month period during the COVID-19 pandemic. We collected socio-demographic and work-related information and assessed the perceived social support, coping strategies, and levels of depression, anxiety, insomnia, anger, burnout, and PTSD symptoms. In total, 325 Italian healthcare workers (i.e. physicians, nurses, other healthcare workers, and clerks) participated in the first initial survey and either the second or third subsequent survey. Participants reported subclinical levels of psychiatric symptoms that remained mostly unchanged across time, except for an increase in stress, depression, state anger, and emotional exhaustion symptoms. Despite subclinical levels, healthcare workers’ distress can adversely affect the quality of care, patient satisfaction, and medical error rates. Therefore, implementing interventions to improve healthcare workers’ wellbeing is required.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aimed to investigate the socio-demographic, clinical, and psychological variables predictive of a greater functioning and quality of life in patients with gynecological cancer after their first cycle of carboplatin and taxol-based chemotherapy. Methods: The sample of the present research consisted of 104 patients. The European Organization on Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Form Y, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were administered to each participant. Results: The analyses showed that higher state anxiety levels predicted a lower role, emotional, and social functioning and a lower general quality of life. Higher trait anxiety levels and social support perceived from one's friends predicted a greater role functioning. Similarly, having a relationship predicted a greater physical, cognitive, and social functioning. On the contrary, the presence of relapsed cancer was negatively associated with these patients' quality of life. Conclusions: The present study highlighted the importance of identifying patients at higher risk of experiencing lower levels of functioning and worse general quality of life to implement tailored interventions from the beginning of treatment, thus improving the quality of life of these patients throughout the chemotherapy treatment.

Abstract

So far, the only available data for edoxaban periprocedural management come from the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 trial. The recently published EMIT-AF/VTE study showed low periprocedural bleeding and thromboembolic risks of edoxaban in a real-world setting in patients undergoing any diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. The aim of this study was to compare descriptively Italian and European data with regard to patient characteristics and outcomes in the EMIT-AF/VTE study.A total of 1155 patients treated with edoxaban for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation and with venous thromboembolism, and undergoing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures were enrolled in 326 centers across Europe. Of these patients, 246 were from 43 Italian centers. The periprocedural interruption of edoxaban was at the physician's discretion. All the procedures were classified into minor, low, and high bleeding procedural risk according to the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) definition. The primary outcome was the incidence of major bleeding. Secondary outcomes included thromboembolic events.Patients were older in Italy in comparison with the rest of Europe with a mean age of 74.2 vs 71.3 years. Also, the rate of comorbidities was higher in Italy (e.g. diagnosed cancer and vascular disease) than in Europe. In Italy, there was a higher rate of high bleeding risk procedures than in other European countries (37.8% vs 20.6%) and a more homogeneous distribution of all types of procedures (while in Europe 44.1% were vascular access and transcatheter diagnostic procedures and interventions). In Italy, a higher proportion of patients did not interrupt edoxaban (32.9% vs 29% in Europe). The number of major bleeding events (2 in Italy, 3 in Europe) as well as of thromboembolic events (4 in Italy, 3 in Europe) was overall low.In the EMIT-AF/VTE study, the number of bleeding and thromboembolic events in patients treated with edoxaban undergoing elective or unplanned procedures was low either in Italy or in the rest of Europe. The safety and efficacy of edoxaban was confirmed in Italy even if patients were older, presented more frequently with cancer, and there was a higher rate of high bleeding risk procedures by EHRA definition.

Abstract

During the last year, the COVID-19 outbreak put all the healthcare workers around the world at risk of physical and psychological sequelae. The general purpose of the present study was to assess the mental health of Italian healthcare workers during the COVID-19 outbreak and to identify high-risk groups. Here, we present results from the baseline assessment of the “Healthcare workers’ wellbeing (Benessere Operatori)” project on a sample of 1055 healthcare workers. Participants completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21, the Insomnia Severity Index, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Healthcare workers who worked in COVID wards reported higher levels of anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress, anger, and burnout, compared to those reported by the healthcare workers who worked in non-COVID wards. Moreover, nurses, both in COVID and non-COVID wards, were at higher risk of experiencing psychological distress compared to other groups of healthcare workers. These findings highlight the importance of implementing targeted psychological interventions for healthcare workers operating in COVID wards and nurses, who seem to be the most vulnerable categories.

Abstract

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) represents a spectrum of rare pregnancy-related disorders, including both premalignant and malignant entities. Although GTD's medical outcomes have been widely explored, limited data are available regarding the related psychological, sexual, and fertility issues. The present chapter aims to enhance comprehension of the psychosocial impact of GTD by discussing the main quantitative and qualitative evidence available in this field. Although patients globally report a good quality of life, clinically significant levels of anxiety and depression have been consistently found across studies. Similarly, despite the quality of couple relationships being generally satisfactory, they often complain of a lack of sexual desire. Moreover, pregnancy loss may raise significant and long-term fertility-related concerns. Specific socio-demographic and clinical factors have been identified as predictors of psychosocial outcomes. At the clinical level, research suggests that there is a need to provide multidisciplinary care to patients.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic involved several psychosocial consequences. We aimed at monitoring the mental health of Italian adults during the lockdown imposed by the government. We present here results from the baseline assessment of the “EmotionalThermometer [TermometroEmotivo] project on a sample of 1548 Italian adults. We assessed the socio-demographic conditions of participants, individuals’ perception of the COVID-19-situation, psychological distress, emotion regulation strategies, and perceived social support. Having a worse representation of COVID-19 and consulting news more frequently, with higher anxiety and less credibility of different sources of information, were positively associated with psychological distress and post-traumatic responses. Being female, younger age, living in high-risk regions, having symptoms of COVID-19, and having relatives/friends with such symptoms represented risk factors for a worse perception of COVID-19 and distress. Social support and cognitive reappraisal represented protective factors for mental health.

Abstract

Objective: Referring to Leventhal's common-sense model, this observational cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the relationship between illness mental representations, coping mechanisms and psychological distress in a sample of women with gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). Methods: Thirty-eight women diagnosed with GTD (18 with hydatidiform mole; 20 with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia) were asked to complete the Illness Perception Questionnaire—Revised, the Coping Orientation to the Problems Experienced, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory—Form Y and the Beck Depression Inventory—Short Form. Demographic and clinical information was collected through a self-report questionnaire. Results: The sample did not report significant symptomatic distress in relation to GTD. Correlation analysis showed that the Emotional representations subscale of the Illness Perception Questionnaire—Revised was significantly associated with both state anxiety and depression; avoidant coping significantly and positively correlated with anxiety and depression, as well as with illness emotional representations. Mediation analysis revealed significant indirect effects of avoidant coping on both anxiety and depression through the mediation of emotional representations. Conclusion: Avoidant coping could lead women to develop emotional representations of illness characterised by negative affects, which in turn enhance distress levels. Results underline the importance to promote adaptive coping strategies, along with accurate illness perceptions, to foster better psychological adjustment to GTD.

20. The Long-Term Effects of Cancer Treatment on Sexuality and Couple Relationships

Abstract

Breast cancer and its pharmacological treatment often induce an impairment in women’s sexual functioning and couple relationships, as a consequence of physiological changes and psychosocial issues that may arise and persist long after treatment. This study aims to evaluate the sexual functioning, the quality of the couple relationship, and the overall health status of breast cancer survivors. A further objective is to determine the predictive role of specific clinical and sociodemographic variables for sexual functioning and the couple relationship. Sixty‐four breast cancer survivors completed the following questionnaires: the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), the Short Form Health Survey‐12 (SF‐12), and a self‐report questionnaire to collect sociodemographic characteristics. Clinical information was retrieved from medical records. Compared to normative data, our sample reported significantly (p < .01) lower mean scores in the FSFI, DAS, and Physical Component (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) of the SF‐12. Multiple regression analyses show a significant effect of age, hormonal therapy, and psychological well‐being on sexual functioning and a significant effect of physical and mental well‐being on the quality of the couple relationship. Additionally, 75% of patients qualified for sexual dysfunction as measured by the FSFI global scale, and 71.9% declared they were not adequately informed about the side effects of treatments on sexuality. The high prevalence of sexual dysfunction in breast cancer survivors underlines the need for specific attention to this problem, starting from a complete and targeted communication between patients and health providers regarding these side effects.

Abstract

Introduction: Despite advancements in the control of emesis, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) still represent major problems for patients undergoing chemotherapy and can deeply affect quality of life and everyday activities. Objectives: This study aimed to measure the frequency and intensity of CINV and its variation over time, in order to gain a better understanding of the extent to which patients experience it. Methods: One hundred and twenty-one patients treated for gynecological cancer at the San Raffaele Hospital completed the MASCC Antiemesis Tool (MAT) after their first chemotherapy infusion; 85 of these patients completed the questionnaire after the third infusion. Results: The age range of the sample was 3285 years (mean=58.19; SD=13.82). Thirty-five percent of the patients experienced acute nausea after the first infusion and 44% after the third infusion; 48% reported delayed nausea after the first infusion and 58% after the third infusion. Only a small percentage of patients reported acute and delayed vomiting (5-18%). The intensity of nausea was significantly different from 0 in all four cases (p<.001). A significant increase in the intensity of acute nausea (p=.017) was found between the third infusion and the first. Conclusions: The findings suggest that nausea represents an important problem that is still common among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy; it is possible that an exhaustion of psychosocial resources and the accumulation of the effects of antineoplastic drugs contribute to the increased intensity of acute nausea over time. These should be further investigated in order to properly address these patient issues.

Abstract

We analysed the first 84 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients hospitalised in an infectious and tropical disease unit in Florence, Italy, over 30 days after the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy. A 12% reduction in the rate of intensive care unit transfer was observed after the implementation of intensity care measures in the regular ward such as increasing the nurse/patient ratio, presence of critical care physicians and using high flow nasal cannulae oxygenation.

Abstract

Purpose of Review We aim to provide quantitative evidence on the psychological impact of epidemic/pandemic outbreaks (i.e., SARS, MERS, COVID-19, ebola, and influenza A) on healthcare workers (HCWs). Recent Findings Forty-four studies are included in this review. Between 11 and 73.4% of HCWs, mainly including physicians, nurses, and auxiliary staff, reported post-traumatic stress symptoms during outbreaks, with symptoms lasting after 1-3 years in 10-40%. Depressive symptoms are reported in 27.5-50.7%, insomnia symptoms in 34-36.1%, and severe anxiety symptoms in 45%. General psychiatric symptoms during outbreaks have a range comprised between 17.3 and 75.3%; high levels of stress related to working are reported in 18.1 to 80.1%. Several individual and work-related features can be considered risk or protective factors, such as personality characteristics, the level of exposure to affected patients, and organizational support. Empirical evidence underlines the need to address the detrimental effects of epidemic/pandemic outbreaks on HCWs' mental health. Recommendations should include the assessment and promotion of coping strategies and resilience, special attention to frontline HCWs, provision of adequate protective supplies, and organization of online support services.

29. Chemotherapy-induced nausea in a sample of gynaecological cancer patients: assessment issues and personal risk factors evaluation

Abstract

Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced nausea (CIN) is a relevant problem for gynaecological cancer patients. The evaluation of CIN is a key aspect in its management, along with the identification of associated risk factors. The objective of the study was to compare different measurements of nausea and to investigate personal risk factors in CIN development. Method: Eighty-one women treated for gynaecological cancers took part. The presence of CIN was evaluated using the MASCC Antiemesis Tool (MAT) and a patient’s report to clinicians at the subsequent chemotherapy cycle. Personal risk factors were assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and a self-report questionnaire. Results: The study shows that the agreement between patients’ assessment of CIN with MAT and what they referred to clinicians was only moderate for acute nausea (Cohen’s Kappa = 0.55; p < 0.001), while good for delayed nausea (Cohen’s Kappa = 0.68; p < 0.001). At multiple logistic regression analysis, younger age, anticipatory nausea, patient medium-high expectations of CIN, and parity emerged as risk factors for the development of acute nausea (p = 0.0087, 0.0080, 0.0122 and 0.0021, respectively). Patient medium-high expectations of CIN and being single resulted to be risk factors for delayed nausea (p = 0.0397 and 0.0024, respectively). Conclusions: Our findings confirm that personal factors contribute to individual differences in the development of CIN; moreover, we highlight the importance of CIN evaluation by clinicians, underlining the need to use reliable instruments.

Abstract

Objectives To assess in pregnant women with HIV the rates of amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and the outcomes associated with such procedures. Design Observational study. Data from the Italian National Program on Surveillance on Antiretroviral Treatment in Pregnancy were used. Setting University and hospital clinics. Population Pregnant women with HIV. Methods Temporal trends were analysed by analysis of variance and by the Chi-square test for trend. Quantitative variables were compared by Student's t-test and categorical data by the Chi-square test, with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals calculated. Main outcome measures Rate of invasive testing, intrauterine death, HIV transmission. Results Between 2001 and 2015, among 2065 pregnancies in women with HIV, 113 (5.5%) had invasive tests performed. The procedures were conducted under antiretroviral treatment in 99 cases (87.6%), with a significant increase over time in the proportion of tests performed under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) (100% in 2011–2015). Three intrauterine deaths were observed (2.6%), and 14 pregnancies were terminated because of fetal anomalies. Among 96 live newborns, eight had no information available on HIV status. Among the remaining 88 cases with either amniocentesis (n = 75), CVS (n = 12), or both (n = 1), two HIV transmissions occurred (2.3%). No HIV transmission occurred among the women who were on HAART at the time of invasive testing, and none after 2005. Conclusions The findings reinforce the assumption that invasive prenatal testing does not increase the risk of HIV vertical transmission among pregnant women under suppressive antiretroviral treatment. Tweetable abstract No HIV transmission occurred among women who underwent amniocentesis or CVS under effective anti-HIV regimens.

Abstract

Diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancer still entail significant impairment in quality of life. The present study aims at monitoring it during chemotherapy treatment and at identifying variables significantly associated with it. Methods. 87 patients who attended the San Raffaele Hospital completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support before their first and third chemotherapy infusion. A self-report questionnaire was created in order to collect socio-demographic and medical information. Results. Social and emotional functioning and global quality of life show a significant improvement between the first and third chemotherapy infusion; age and perceived social support appear significantly associated with emotional functioning. A chemotherapy regimen with medium or high emetogenic potential and having a full-time job predict an improvement over time in global quality of life and role functioning, respectively. Discussion. These variables should be taken into consideration in patients care, in order to detect potential difficulties and promote a better adjustment to the disease and its treatment

Abstract

Personality can be defined as those characteristics of an individual that account for consistent patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The first studies on personality in psycho-oncology focused on the role of personality traits with respect to cancer incidence and survival; in light of virtually no empirical evidence on a personality-cancer causal association, a more consistent line of research later investigated the relationship between personality and adjustment to disease and treatment. Specifically, there is evidence that certain personality traits, such as neuroticism and negative affectivity, predict poorer levels of quality of life in cancer patients, whereas extraversion and optimism dimensions are associated with better outcomes. Research has been far more limited on the topic of personality disorders in the oncological setting, despite the notable implications that personality disorder patients pose in the interaction with healthcare staff, which can in turn result in suboptimal care. Nonetheless, cooperation with mental health professionals is essential in order to manage complications that may arise in the treatment of these patients, thus promoting the implementation of appropriate treatment plans.

Abstract

Objectives: Smartphone applications are considered as the prime candidate for the purposes of large scale, low cost and long term sleep monitoring. How reliable is smartphone assessment of sleep remains a key issue and more validation studies with both healthy and patient populations are needed. In this study we compared the performance of four smartphone applications (Sleep Cycle-accelerometer; Sleep Cycle-microphone; Smart Alarm; Sense) with polysomnoghraphy (PSG). Our main objective was evaluating whether sleep reports provided by applications offer reliable assessment of standard sleep parameters and establishing which of the application features result more promising for personal home use. Methods: 20 healthy participants were recorded at home, for two consecutive nights. Four iPhone applications (two per each night) designed for sleep–wake detection were used simultaneously with PSG. Results: Pearson’s correlation coefficients between PSG parameters (Time in bed, TIB; Total Sleep Time, TST; Wake After Sleep Onset, WASO; Sleep Efficiency, SE; Sleep Latency, SL; NREM Sleep Stages 1-4, N1, N2, N3, N4; Slow Wave Sleep, SWS; Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, REMS) and app reports were calculated. Introduction: Despite advancements in the control of emesis, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) still represent major problems for patients undergoing chemotherapy and can deeply affect quality of life and everyday activities. Objectives: This study aimed to measure the frequency and intensity of CINV and its variation over time, in order to gain a better understanding of the extent to which patients experience it. Methods: One hundred and twenty-one patients treated for gynecological cancer at the San Raffaele Hospital completed the MASCC Antiemesis Tool (MAT) after their first chemotherapy infusion; 85 of these patients completed the questionnaire after the third infusion. Results: The age range of the sample was 3285 years (mean=58.19; SD=13.82). Le malattie del trofoblasto di origine gestazionale (GTD) rappresentano una complicanza rara della gravidanza. Esse si dividono in forme benigne (mola idatiforme parziale e completa) e maligne (tumori del trofoblasto, GTN). Nonostante la prognosi favorevole che attualmente accompagna tale diagnosi, la natura stessa di queste malattie costituisce una considerevole fonte di stress per le pazienti che ne sono affette. Metodi. Trentuno pazienti affette da GTD hanno completato una batteria di questionari autosomministrati volti a valutare il ruolo dei meccanismi di difesa nell’influenzare l’adattamento psicologico alla malattia, in particolare la presenza di sintomi ansiosi e depressivi e lo stress legato all’infertilità. Risultati. Le pazienti affette da tumori del trofoblasto riportano un maggiore utilizzo di meccanismi di difesa maturi rispetto alle pazienti con mola idatiforme. Le analisi di regressione evidenziano che, al netto di variabili demografiche e mediche correlate alla patologia, i meccanismi di difesa immaturi mantengono una relazione specifica con l’ansia di stato e con lo stress legato all’infertilità riportato dalle pazienti. Conclusioni. I risultati suggeriscono l’importanza di considerare, nella progettazione di interventi clinici, gli specifici meccanismi di difesa messi in atto dalle pazienti, in quanto significativamente coinvolti nel modulare l’adattamento psicologico alle GTD Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) is a group of disorders that derive from the placenta and arise after a rare gestational event. They can be divided into pre-malignant forms (partial and complete hydatidiform mole) and malignant forms called Gestational Trophoblastic Neoplasia (GTN). Despite a favourable prognosis, the nature of this group of disorders can be a source of stress for patients who are affected by this disease. Methods. Thirty-one patients diagnosed with GTD completed a battery of self-administered questionnaires aimed at analysing the psychological adaptation of the patients to the disease. The variables analysed were the following: defense mechanisms, anxiety, depression and infertility-related stress. Results. Patients with GTN use mature defense mechanisms significantly more than patients with hydatidiform mole. Regression analyses highlight that, considering demographic and clinical variables, immature defense mechanisms are significantly related to state anxiety. Immature defence mechanisms also significantly predict infertility-related global stress. Conclusions. The results show the importance of taking into consideration defense mechanisms used by patients, as they are involved in the modulation of psychological adaptation to GTD.

Abstract

Background. Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. Study design. Prospective multicenter study. Methods. The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. Results. During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to 2017, 47.0% of HAIs has led to sepsis in 832 patients. Overall, 57.0% episodes were classified as sepsis, 20.5% as severe sepsis and 22.5% as septic shock. The most common isolated microorganisms from sepsis episodes were Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The case fatality rate increased with the severity of sepsis and the mean length of ICU-stay was significantly higher in patients with ICU-acquired sepsis than in patients without. Conclusions. Our study provides evidence that ICU-acquired sepsis occurs frequently in Italian ICU patients and is associated with a high case fatality rate and increased length of stay. However, in order to explain these findings further analyses are needed in this population of ICU patients.

Abstract

Diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancer still entail significant impairment in quality of life. The present study aims at monitoring it during chemotherapy treatment and at identifying variables significantly associated with it. Methods. 87 patients who attended the San Raffaele Hospital completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support before their first and third chemotherapy infusion. A self-report questionnaire was created in order to collect socio-demographic and medical information. Results. Social and emotional functioning and global quality of life show a significant improvement between the first and third chemotherapy infusion; age and perceived social support appear significantly associated with emotional functioning. A chemotherapy regimen with medium or high emetogenic potential and having a full-time job predict an improvement over time in global quality of life and role functioning, respectively. Discussion. These variables should be taken into consideration in patients care, in order to detect potential difficulties and promote a better adjustment to the disease and its treatment
