Abstract

The SOUL systems at the Large Bincoular Telescope can be seen such as precursor for the ELT SCAO systems, combining together key technologies such as EMCCD, Pyramid WFS and adaptive telescopes. After the first light of the first upgraded system on September 2018, going through COVID and technical stops, we now have all the 4 systems working on-sky. Here, we report about some key control improvements and the system performance characterized during the commissioning. The upgrade allows us to correct more modes (500) in the bright end and increases the sky coverage providing SR(K)>20% with reference stars G$_{RP}$<17, opening to extragalcatic targets with NGS systems. Abstract

The SOUL project is upgrading the 4 SCAO systems of LBT, pushing the current guide star limits of about 2 magnitudes fainter thanks to Electron Multiplied CCD detector. This improvement will open the NGS SCAO correction to a wider number of scientific cases from high contrast imaging in the visible to extra-galactic source in the NIR. The SOUL systems are today the unique case where pyramid WFS, adaptive secondary and EMCCD are used together. This makes SOUL a pathfinder for most of the ELT SCAO systems like the one of GMT, MICADO and HARMONI of E-ELT, where the same key technologies will be employed. Today we have 3 SOUL systems installed on the telescope in commissioning phase. The 4th system will be installed in a few months. Abstract

Electro-Multiplying CCDs offer a unique combination of speed, sub-electron noise and quantum efficiency. These features make them extremely attractive for astronomical adaptive optics. The SOUL project selected the Ocam2k from FLI as camera upgrade for the pyramid wavefront sensor of the LBT SCAO systems. Here we present results from the laboratory characterization of the 3 of the custom Ocam2k cameras for the SOUL project. The cameras showed very good noise ($0.4e^-$ and $0.4-0.7e^-$ for binned modes) and dark current values ($1.5e^-$). We measured the camera gain and identified the dependency on power cycle and frame rate. Finally, we estimated the impact of these gain variation in the SOUL adaptive optics system. 4. Observing spin-squeezed states under spin-exchange collisions for a second

Abstract

Using the platform of a trapped-atom clock on a chip, we observe the time evolution of spin-squeezed hyperfine clock states in ultracold rubidium atoms on previously inaccessible timescales up to 1 s. The spin degree-of-freedom remains squeezed after 0.6 s, which is consistent with the limit imposed by particle loss and is compatible with typical Ramsey times in state-of-the-art microwave clocks. The results also reveal a surprising spin-exchange interaction effect that amplifies the cavity-based spin measurement via a correlation between spin and external degrees of freedom. These results open up perspectives for squeezing-enhanced atomic clocks in a metrologically relevant regime and highlight the importance of spin interactions in real-life applications of spin squeezing., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We describe an experiment where spin squeezing occurs spontaneously within a standard Ramsey sequence driving a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of 87Rb atoms trapped in an elongated magnetic trap. Multiparticle entanglement is generated by state-dependent collisional interactions, despite the near-identical scattering lengths of the spin states in 87Rb. In our proof-of-principle experiment, we observe a metrological spin squeezing that reaches 1.3+/-0.4dB for 5000 atoms, with a contrast of 90+/-1%. The method may be applied to realize spin-squeezed BEC sources for atom interferometry without the need for cavities, state-dependent potentials or Feshbach resonances.

Abstract

BL Lac objects emitting in the Very High Energy (VHE) regime are unique tools to peer into the properties of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). However, due to the typical absence of features in their spectra, the determination of their redshifts has proven challenging. In this work we exploit the superb spatial resolution delivered by the new Advanced Rayleigh guided Ground layer adaptive Optics System (ARGOS) at the Large Binocular Telescope to detect the host galaxy of HESS J1943+213, a VHE emitting BL Lac shining through the Galaxy. Deep H-band imaging collected during the ARGOS commissioning allowed us to separate the contribution of the nuclear emission and to unveil the properties of the host galaxy with unprecedented detail. The host galaxy is well fitted by a S\'ersic profile with index of n~2 and total magnitude of H~16.15 mag. Under the assumption that BL Lac host galaxies are standard candles, we infer a redshift of z~0.21. In the framework of the current model for the EBL, this value is in agreement with the observed dimming of the VHE spectrum due to the scatter of energetic photons on the EBL., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Abstract

We present a gradiometer based on matter-wave interference of alkaline-earth-metal atoms, namely $^{88}$Sr. The coherent manipulation of the atomic external degrees of freedom is obtained by large-momentum-transfer Bragg diffraction, driven by laser fields detuned away from the narrow $^1$S$_0$-$^3$P$_1$ intercombination transition. We use a well-controlled artificial gradient, realized by changing the relative frequencies of the Bragg pulses during the interferometer sequence, in order to characterize the sensitivity of the gradiometer. The sensitivity reaches $1.5 \times 10^{-5}$ s$^{-2}$ for an interferometer time of 20 ms, limited only by geometrical constraints. We observed extremely low sensitivity of the gradiometric phase to magnetic field gradients, approaching a value 10$^{5}$ times lower than the sensitivity of alkali-atom based gradiometers. An efficient double-launch technique employing accelerated red vertical lattices from a single magneto-optical trap cloud is also demonstrated. These results highlight strontium as an ideal candidate for precision measurements of gravity gradients, with potential application in future precision tests of fundamental physics., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We report on a trapped atom interferometer based on Bragg diffraction and Bloch oscillations with alkaline-earth-metal atoms. We use a Ramsey-Bord\'e Bragg interferometer with $^{88}$Sr atoms combined with Bloch oscillations to extend the interferometer time. Thanks to a long coherence time for Bloch oscillations of $^{88}$Sr atoms, we observed interference up to 1 s evolution time in the lattice. A detailed study of decoherence sources during the Bloch phase is also presented. While still limited in sensitivity by lattice lifetime and beam inhomogeneity this result opens the way to high contrast trapped interferometers with extended interrogation time., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. 9. Implementation of SLODAR atmospheric turbulence profiling to the ARGOS system

Abstract

ARGOS is the Ground Layer Adaptive Optics system of the Large Binocular Telescope, on each side it uses three Laser Guide Stars, generated by Rayleigh backscattered light of pulsed lasers. Three Shack-Hartmann WFS are used to measure the wavefront distortion in the Ground Layer. The SLOpe Detection And Ranging (SLODAR) is a technique used to measure the atmospheric turbulence profiles. Cross correlation of wavefronts gradients from multiple stars are used to estimate the relative strength of turbulent layers at different altitudes. We present here the first results obteined on sky of appling the SLODAR technique to ARGOS comparing then with a previous study based on end-to-end simulations.

Abstract

We present the first results of Argos, the multiple laser guide star and wavefront sensing facility for the Large Binocular Telescope. This system will deliver an improvement by a factor of two in FWHM over the 4′×4′ field of view of both Luci instruments. Luci 1 and Luci 2 are two near-infrared wide field imagers and multi-object spectrographs which capability and efficiency will be boosted by the increased resolution and encircled energy.The first on-sky ground-layer adaptive optics (GLAO) loop closure with Argos has been achieved in Fall 2014 on the right eye of the telescope. Stable operations in closed-loop have been demonstrated in May 2015 with hour-long integration and repeated good performances over several nights. Since then, the commissioning has been proceeding with the installation of the left system and the beginning of the left on-sky operations in this Fall 2015. The next achievements will be to strengthen the operational aspects and to perform science demonstration in both imaging and spectroscopic modes. We first present the current status of the project and review the operational aspects. Then, we analyze the first combined Luci and Argos observations and discuss the performances and the gains provided by Argos in term of scientific capabilities.

Abstract

ARGOS is the laser guide star facility of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). It implements a Rayleigh Laser Guide Star system that provides Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) correction for the LUCIs, the 2 wide- field near-infrared imagers and multi-object spectrographs installed on the 2 eyes of LBT. In this paper we describe how LBT’s adaptive optics operations have been tailored to ARGOS’s use cases based on the experience developed during over the ARGOS commissioning. We focus on all the aspects that are influenced by the use of the Laser Guide Stars, from collimation to acquisition and LGS guiding and we details the sequences to start, pause and resume the adaptive correction.

Abstract

12 pages, 7 figures; Using the platform of a trapped-atom clock on a chip, we have generated spin-squeezed states with up to 8.1(9) dB of metrological squeezing in a cloud of $2\times 10^4$ ultracold alkali atoms by quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement in a fiber Fabry-Perot microcavity. Observing the time evolution of the squeezed state on unprecedented timescales of more than one second reveals a surprising measurement amplification effect in the final measurement of the spin state. It results from a subtle interplay between the spin dynamics of interacting indistinguishable particles and energy-dependent cavity coupling and leads to an increased cavity shift per spin, and thus to a higher signal per photon read out. Metrological spin squeezing is preserved for 1 s. Both results open up encouraging perspectives for squeezing-enhanced atomic clocks in a metrologically relevant stability regime.

Abstract

Coming online for scientific operations, the ARGOS facility is boosting the imaging and spectroscopic capabilities at the LBT. With six Rayleigh laser guide stars and the corresponding wavefront sensing, ARGOS corrects the ground layer distortions for both LBT 8.4 m telescopes with its adaptive secondary mirrors. Under most conditions this setup delivers a PSF size reduction by a factor ~2-3. With the two LUCI infrared imaging and MOS spectroscopy instruments receiving the corrected images, observations in the near infrared can be performed at high spatial and spectral resolution. We will briefly discuss the final ARGOS technical setup and the adaptive optics performances. With first scientific observations been conducted, we will show that imaging cases with GLAO are nicely boosting several science programs from cluster CMD, Milky Way embedded star formation and Cepheids, BHs in nearby galaxies to extragalactic deep fields. In the unique combination of ARGOS with the multi-object NIR spectroscopy available in LUCI, first scientific observations have been performed on local and high-z objects. Those high spatial and spectral resolution observations nicely demonstrate the capabilities now at hand with ARGOS at the LBT. Inhere we describe briefly the system and show examples of science observations from nearby clusters to high redshift gravitationally lensed objects.

Abstract

We aim to refine the sample of isolated early‐type galaxies in the Analysis of the interstellar Medium of Isolated Galaxies (AMIGA) catalog via high‐resolution imaging. Here, we report the result from a pilot study investigating two candidates, KIG 685 and KIG 895, in K‐band with the laser guide star and wavefront sensing facility ARGOS using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Observations, obtained during the commissioning time, achieved a point spread function (PSF) of ≈0.25″. We present the data reduction and the PSF analysis from the best closed‐loop exposures to investigate the galaxies' morphological structure, including their nuclear region. We used PROFILER for the decomposition of the azimuthal 1D light distribution and GALFIT for the 2D analysis, accounting for ARGOS's PSF. KIG 685 was found to be a S0 galaxy and has been modeled with two Sérsic components representing a pseudobulge (n1D = 2.87 ± 0.21, n2D = 2.29 ± 0.10) and a disk (n1D = 0.95 ± 0.16, n2D = 0.78 ± 0.10). Nearly symmetric ring‐/shell‐like structures emerge after subtracting the GALFIT model from the image. KIG 895 shows a clear irregular arm‐like structure, in which the northern outer arm is reminiscent of a tail. The galaxy body is a disk, best fitted by a single Sérsic profile (n1D = 1.22 ± 0.1; n2D = 1.32 ± 0.12), that is, KIG 895 is a bulge‐less, very late‐type spiral. ARGOS high‐resolution images clearly showed interaction signatures in KIG 895. We suggest that the ring‐/shell‐like residuals in KIG 685, a bona fide early‐type galaxy, point toward a past accretion event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
