Abstract

Productivity improvement in the steel industry is pivotal to achieving competiveness that stimulate the economic growth of a country. In the past decade, the steel shaft manufacturing industry has experienced low productivity rates, making it difficult to compete at a global level. In light of this, the aim of this research study is to investigate the various process wastes and bottlenecks that limit the productivity progression of a steel shaft manufacturing environment, using integrated value stream mapping and system simulation methodologies. Data captured through the system observation of the shaft manufacturing process of a steel company was used to map and simulate the system. The results of the current state mapping of the steel shaft manufacturing environment revealed the various process wastes present in this system. The result of the simulation of the system revealed that the system bottlenecks were the saw master and milling stations. The strategic interventions in the saw master and milling stations improved these stations throughput from 959 to 1 218 (27%) and 624 to 1 003 (60.74%) components respectively. The work-in-progress components generated in the entire system after the strategic interventions reduced from 415 to 17.

Abstract

Home healthcare (HHC) organisations provide coordinated healthcare services to patients at their homes. Motivated by the ever-increasing need for home-based care, the assignment of tasks to available healthcare staff is a common and complex problem in homecare organisations. Designing high quality task schedules is critical for improving worker morale, job satisfaction, service efficiency, service quality, and competitiveness over the long term. The desire is to provide high quality task assignment schedules that satisfy the patient, the care worker, and the management. This translates to maximising schedule fairness in terms of workload assignments, avoiding task time window violation, and meeting management goals as much as possible. However, in practice, these desires are often subjective as they involve imprecise human perceptions. This paper develops a fuzzy multi-criteria particle swarm optimisation (FPSO) approach for task assignment in a home healthcare setting in a fuzzy environment. The proposed approach uses a fuzzy evaluation method from a multi-criteria point of view. Results from illustrative computational experiments show that the approach is promising.

Abstract

As digital technologies and AI systems increasingly pervade banking services, understanding customers' digital capabilities and awareness of AI ethics principles is paramount. This paper delves into these critical aspects among banking clientele. Employing a survey research approach with a cross-sectional design, an online survey via Google Forms was distributed to 500 banking customers, of whom 466 responded. The survey evaluated respondents' digital competencies and AI ethics awareness through multiple-choice questions and Likert scale items. Utilizing IBM SPSS version 28 and Microsoft 365 analysis software, descriptive statistics and statistical analysis were conducted to discern trends and patterns. The key finding emphasizes the urgency for financial institutions to invest in digital technologies enhancing customer experiences and fostering ethical AI adoption. A significant policy implication underscores the need for policymakers and regulatory bodies to collaborate with the banking sector, developing clear guidelines for responsible AI practices, prioritizing customer privacy, data protection, and fairness in AI algorithms. This study also introduces the CORE AI framework, concentrating on responsible AI adoption, customer-centricity, and strategic optimization, promising positive outcomes for stakeholders. 46. Trends of Eliminating Bottlenecks in the Automotive Supply Chain in South Africa.

Abstract

The Automotive Supply Chain (ASC) industries in South Africa (SA) are thriving to eliminate the bottlenecks by implementing Lean Manufacturing (LM) techniques in the production line. The paper seeks to identify the bottlenecks by Gemba walks and develop methods to eliminate the eight wastes using the theory of constrains (TOC) and the Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis techniques. The bottleneck is exploited using the (TOC), error proofing Poka Yoka and intelligent Jidoka tools on the production machines. The use of green materials, trained personnel, good housekeeping, and inventory control together with a safe and health work environment increased throughput rates to meet customer needs and job satisfaction. 47. Optimization of Lean Implementation by the Seven New Operational Areas.

Abstract

In the implementation of Lean manufacturing (LM) the focus was to eliminate the barriers within the ten generic barrier areas to achieve a remarkable success. The Automotive Supply Chain (ASC) in South Africa (SA) found these ten generic barrier areas insufficient because of the culture mix, level of education of employees, religion, and cultural values. To optimize the implementation of LM the ASC in SA found seven new barrier areas that needs subordination. The seven barrier areas are not yet documented as critical in the academic work. The seven areas are Green Technologies, workers, sustenance, safety, security, profitability, and Marketing, but are discussed elsewhere with no relation to implementing LM. These have increased the success rate in the SA setting. Some of these technologies are broken down to subunits because they involve many attributes. 48. Total Productive Maintenance Optimizes Manufacturing Industries in South Africa.

Abstract

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) strategy offset the operation delays, product defects, order declines, customer dissatisfaction and worker demoralization in a Manufacturing or service industry. This helps the company to achieve an increased Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) close to 95%. The study evaluated how TPM develops a high degree of utilization, reliability, and availability of the plant. The study showed an increase in machine efficiency by reducing set up times, defects, and total elimination of machine breakdowns. The 7S, Kanban, single minute exchange of dies (SMED) and OEE techniques enables the success of TPM. It was established that leadership enables the change in manufacturing culture by providing resources, job satisfaction and moral support. The leadership must avoid questionable decisions and unethical behaviour that cause harm to the organization by acts that makes them lose respect.
