8. Epiploic Appendagitis in a Femoral Hernia

Abstract

Both epiploic appendagitis and femoral herniae are rare diagnoses individually. No radiological cases of a patient having epiploic appendagitis within a femoral hernia have been documented in the literature. We present a case of a 65-year-old patient who underwent clinical work-up for a tender left groin lump. When undergoing a CT scan for investigating possible lymphadenopathy, she was found to have epiploic appendagitis contained within an incarcerated left sided femoral hernia. In this case report, we review the relevant anatomy, aetiology, patient demographics, as well as clinical and imaging findings and management.

Abstract

Over the past decade public decision makers have become increasingly concerned with the potential impacts of their decisions upon values associated with fish resources. These impacts can often involve large-scale alternation of natural habitats. Recreation is an important use of the fisheries resource. Anglers in Ontario spent more than 43 million days engaged in sport fishing expending more than 650 million dollars within the Province in 1980 (Government of Ontario, 1980). This paper deals largely with conceptual methods of measuring the economic benefits of recreational fishing. It is intended to serve several purposes: to present a review of the economic evaluations of recreational fishing and to expand certain conceptual concepts of the subject. High priority steps that should be taken to develop appropriate fishing values which can be used in policy decisions are also presented. Thesis Candidate in Philosophy

21. Generation of hierarchical multiresolution terrain databases using wavelet filtering

Abstract

An approach for generating a hierarchical, multiresolution polygonaldatabase from raw elevation data using the wavelet transform is described. We first present experimental results in the use of the wavelet transform to produce filtered data that progress from coarse to fine resolution in a tunable manner. These initial conclusions logicallylead to our proposed enhancement method. In this approach, we utilize wavelet filtered data in conjunction with a hierarchical triangulation technique to create a set of increasing resolution models. This methodology utilizes a tunable filtering scheme to retain the dominantterrain features at each level and, more importantly, to maintain a database hierarchy. This procedure was implemented with real elevation data, and the results that we present are the relationship between the number of triangles created and the root-mean-squared errors of the triangular models along with 2D and 3D plots of the resultant triangulations.
