Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic molecules containing adjacent aromatic rings. Infrared emission bands show that PAHs are abundant in space, but only a few specific PAHs have been detected in the interstellar medium. We detected 1-cyanopyrene, a cyano-substituted derivative of the related four-ring PAH pyrene, in radio observations of the dense cloud TMC-1, using the Green Bank Telescope. The measured column density of 1-cyanopyrene is [Formula: see text] cm -2 , from which we estimate that pyrene contains up to 0.1% of the carbon in TMC-1. This abundance indicates that interstellar PAH chemistry favors the production of pyrene. We suggest that some of the carbon supplied to young planetary systems is carried by PAHs that originate in cold molecular clouds.

Erythroderma, an inflammatory skin condition characterized by widespread erythema with variable degrees of exfoliation, pustulation, or vesiculobullous formation, is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Determining the underlying cause of erythroderma frequently presents a diagnostic challenge, which may contribute to the condition's relatively poor prognosis. This review covers the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of erythroderma. It discusses similarities and differences among the many underlying etiologies of the condition and differences between erythrodermic and non-erythrodermic presentations of the same dermatosis. Finally, this article explores current research that may provide future tools in the diagnosis and management of erythroderma., (© 2024. Mycoplasma bovis is a globally significant pathogen of cattle associated with a wide range of clinical syndromes, including respiratory disease, mastitis, arthritis, otitis, and reproductive failure. Since its detection in Ireland in 1994, M. bovis has become a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality in Irish cattle. This study aimed to investigate herd-level risk factors associated with M. bovis seropositivity in replacement dairy heifers, using data from 105 Irish dairy herds. Ten heifers per herd were sampled on three occasions: spring 2018, spring 2019, and autumn 2019. Seropositivity was evaluated using two thresholds: ≥1 positive heifer (Model ≥ 1POS) and ≥3 positive heifers (Model ≥ 3POS). M. bovis seropositivity varied over time, with at least one positive heifer in 50.4% (95% confidence interval (CI): 40.5-60.3) of herds in spring 2018, 35.2% (95% CI: 26.2-45.1) in spring 2019, and 45.7% (95% CI: 36.0-55.7) in autumn 2019. Herds with three or more positive heifers increased from 31.4% (95%CI: 22.7-41.2) in spring 2018 to 42.9% (95% CI: 33.2-52.9) by autumn 2019. Risk factors for M. bovis seropositivity included the purchase of cattle, which significantly raised the odds of seropositivity across multiple visit periods (Model ≥ 1POS: Odds ratio (OR) 3.84, p = 0.02; Model ≥ 3POS: OR 3.69, p = 0.02). Managing more than three land parcels, housing heifer calves separately from bull calves, and sharing airspace between calves and older animals also increased seropositivity risks. Conversely, more colostrum feeds reduced the risk of seropositivity (Model ≥ 1POS: OR 0.81, p = 0.05), while colostrum quality assessment and feeding waste milk showed a trend toward increased risk. These findings suggest the importance of robust biosecurity measures, including limiting cattle purchases, improving calf management, and enhancing colostrum feeding practices, to control the spread of M. bovis . This study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of M. bovis in Irish dairy herds, emphasising the need for targeted biosecurity and surveillance to safeguard herd productivity.

We report the hyperfine-resolved rotational spectrum of the gas-phase phenoxy radical in the 8-25 GHz frequency range using cavity Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. A complete assignment of its complex but well-resolved fine and hyperfine splittings yielded a precisely determined set of rotational constants, spin-rotation parameters, and nuclear hyperfine coupling constants. These results are interpreted with support from high-level quantum chemical calculations to gain detailed insight into the distribution of the unpaired π electron in this prototypical resonance-stabilized radical. The accurate laboratory rest frequencies enable studies of the chemistry of phenoxy in both the laboratory and space. The prospects of extending the present experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate the rotational spectra of isotopic variants and structural isomers of phenoxy and other important gas-phase radical intermediates that are yet undetected at radio wavelengths are discussed.

Background: Ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries is frequently caused by coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). Consensus diagnostic criteria for CMD include baseline angiographic slow flow by corrected TIMI (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction) frame count (cTFC), but correlations between slow flow and CMD measured by invasive coronary function testing (CFT) are uncertain., Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate relationships between cTFC and invasive CFT for CMD., Methods: Adults with ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries underwent invasive CFT with thermodilution-derived baseline coronary blood flow, coronary flow reserve (CFR), and index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR). CMD was defined as abnormal CFR (<2.5) and/or abnormal IMR (≥25). cTFC was measured from baseline angiography; slow flow was defined as cTFC >25. Correlations between cTFC and baseline coronary flow and between CFR and IMR and associations between slow flow and invasive measures of CMD were evaluated, adjusted for covariates. All patients provided consent., Results: Among 508 adults, 49% had coronary slow flow. Patients with slow flow were more likely to have abnormal IMR (36% vs 26%; P = 0.019) but less likely to have abnormal CFR (28% vs 42%; P = 0.001), with no difference in CMD (46% vs 51%). cTFC was weakly correlated with baseline coronary blood flow (r = -0.35; 95% CI: -0.42 to -0.27), CFR (r = 0.20; 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.28), and IMR (r = 0.16; 95% CI: 0.07-0.24). Background: This study examined fatigue in patients treated for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) over a 2-year period (3- to 27-months post-treatment completion), from the perspective of children and parent caregivers, compared to a healthy comparison group., Methods: Eighty-three patients (4-16 years at enrolment) and their parents, reported on the child's fatigue using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory- Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (PedsQL-MFS), at 3- 15- and 27-months post-treatment completion, and 53 healthy children and their parents reported on fatigue across the same timepoints., Results: Parent proxy-reporting showed that parents of ALL patients reported more total fatigue than parents of the comparison group at all time points, with all subscales elevated (general, cognitive, and sleep/rest fatigue). In contrast, patient self-report of fatigue over this period differed from the comparison children for the general fatigue subscale only. Self-reported total fatigue was worse than the comparison group at the 27-month timepoint, with cognitive and sleep/rest fatigue symptoms contributing to this difference. Expected improvements in fatigue over time were not evident in either patient or parent report and no demographic risk factors were identified. Parents and children from both groups reported significantly more fatigue at all time points compared to commonly utilised normative population data., Conclusions: Patients treated for childhood ALL are impacted by fatigue symptoms in the post-treatment and early survivorship period. These findings highlight that patients in the 2-years following treatment require increased symptom surveillance and may benefit particularly from interventions that target cognitive and sleep/rest fatigue., (© 2024. Background: Children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are vulnerable to pain., Objective: This study aimed to examine how healthcare providers and parents assessed pain and what contextual factors influenced their pain assessment practices for children hospitalized after allogeneic HSCT therapy., Methods: A qualitative case study was conducted in a tertiary level pediatric HSCT unit in 2 phases. Semistructured interviews with parents were conducted at 30 and 90 days after HSCT therapy. Healthcare providers participated in naturalistic observations of pain-related care provided to children during their hospitalization for HSCT therapy and a semistructured interview., Results: The assessment of pain after transplantation by healthcare providers and parents was predominantly reliant on the observation of children for behaviors indicative of pain, rather than the application of validated pain assessment tools. Without formal measures of the pain experience, judgments regarding the severity of children's pain were influenced by the context of high acuity of care posttransplantation and the emotional responses of healthcare providers and parents from bearing witness to children's pain., Conclusion: Pain assessments mostly reflected children's ability to tolerate pain, rather than a genuine measurement of how significantly pain impacted the child., Implication for Practice: This study has emphasized how the assessment of pain for children hospitalized during HSCT therapy is limited by the complexity of the clinical environment. Purpose: Cancer and its treatments are known to compromise fertility in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). The emotional burden of possible infertility is reduced in those who receive supportive oncofertility care. In legal minors, provision of health care must consider the legal context and desire that AYAs have for autonomous decision-making, together with their competence to make health decisions. This has important implications for how oncofertility discussions may, or may not, involve parents. The aim of this study was to explore oncofertility decision-making and care experiences in a national Australian sample of AYA cancer patients and their parents. Methods: AYAs aged 15-25 years and parents were recruited from 17 cancer care sites and CanTeen Australia as part of a national AYA cancer care study. The cross-sectional survey included open-ended questions regarding oncofertility care experiences. We used reflexive thematic analysis to identify themes. Results: Data were available for 99 AYAs and 111 parents. Four themes were identified: emotional care needs; parent-AYA dynamics including AYA autonomy and agency; decision-making considerations including values and practicalities; and reflections on oncofertility care and follow-up. Both AYAs and parents placed importance on AYA autonomy in fertility decision-making, but many AYAs appreciated the role of parents in providing support and guidance throughout the process. Conclusion: Health care professionals are encouraged to autonomously engage AYAs around fertility decision-making, while concurrently offering opportunities that promote parental support. Better psychological support and follow-up oncofertility care are also needed.

Purpose: To understand how adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer experience family and partner involvement in fertility preservation (FP) decision-making. Methods: As part of a nationally representative Australian cross-sectional study of 15-25-year olds with cancer, 196 participants (mean age 19.9 [standard deviation 3.2] years at diagnosis; 51% male) were surveyed regarding FP decision-making. Results: One hundred sixty-one (83%) participants reported discussion of potential effects of cancer and its treatment on fertility, of whom 57 (35%) did not undertake FP (51% of females; 19% of males). Parental involvement (mothers 62%, fathers 45%) in decision-making was considered helpful, including for 73% of 20-25-year olds with partners. Sisters and brothers were involved less often, yet rated helpful in 48% and 41% of cases, respectively. Older participants were more likely than younger ones to have involved partners (47% vs. 22%, p  = 0.001) and less likely to have involved mothers (56% vs. 71%, p  = 0.04) or fathers (39% vs. 55%, p  = 0.04). Conclusion: This is the first quantitative study to explore family and partner involvement in AYA FP decision-making in both females and males in a nationally representative sample. Parents are important resources who commonly assist AYAs with these complex decisions. Although many AYAs will be the main decision-makers when it comes to FP, particularly as AYAs mature, these data suggest that resources and support should be available for and inclusive of parents, partners, and siblings.

Delocalization of the unpaired electron in π-conjugated radicals has profound implications for their chemistry, but direct and quantitative characterization of this electronic structure in isolated molecules remains challenging. We apply hyperfine-resolved microwave rotational spectroscopy to rigorously probe π-delocalization in propargyl, CH 2 CCH, a prototypical resonance-stabilized radical and key reactive intermediate. Using the spectroscopic constants derived from the high-resolution cavity Fourier transform microwave measurements of an exhaustive set of 13 C- and 2 H-substituted isotopologues, together with high-level ab initio calculations of zero-point vibrational effects, we derive its precise semiexperimental equilibrium geometry and quantitatively characterize the spatial distribution of its unpaired electron. Our results highlight the importance of considering both spin-polarization and orbital-following contributions when interpreting the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants of π radicals. These physical insights are strengthened by a parallel analysis of the isoelectronic species cyanomethyl, CH 2 CN, using new 13 C measurements also reported in this work. A detailed comparison of the structure and electronic properties of propargyl, cyanomethyl, and other closely related species allows us to correlate trends in their chemical bonding and electronic structure with critical changes in their reactivity and thermochemistry.

Background: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are the causative agents of colibacillosis in chickens, a disease which has significant economic impact on the poultry industry. Large plasmids detected in APEC are known to contribute to strain diversity for pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance, but there could be other plasmids that are missed in standard analysis. In this study, we determined the impact of sequencing and assembly factors for the detection of plasmids in an E. coli whole genome sequencing project., Results: Hybrid assembly (Illumina and Nanopore) combined with plasmid DNA extractions allowed for detection of the greatest number of plasmids in E. coli, as detected by MOB-suite software. In total, 79 plasmids were identified in 19 E. coli isolates. Hybrid assemblies were robust and consistent in quality regardless of sequencing kit used or if long reads were filtered or not. In contrast, long read only assemblies were more variable and influenced by sequencing and assembly parameters. Plasmid DNA extractions allowed for the detection of physically smaller plasmids, but when averaged over 19 isolates did not significantly change the overall number of plasmids detected., Conclusions: Hybrid assembly can be reliably used to detect plasmids in E. coli, especially if researchers are focused on large plasmids containing antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors. If the goal is comprehensive detection of all plasmids, particularly if smaller sized vectors are desired for biotechnology applications, the addition of plasmid DNA extractions to hybrid assemblies is prudent. Background: Acetylcholine-induced chest pain is routinely measured during the assessment of microvascular function., Aims: The aim was to determine the relationships between acetylcholine-induced chest pain and both symptom burden and objective measures of vascular function., Methods: In patients with angina but no obstructive coronary artery disease, invasive studies determined the presence or absence of chest pain during both acetylcholine and adenosine infusion. Thermodilution-derived coronary blood flow (CBF) and index of microvascular resistance (IMR) was determined at rest and during both acetylcholine and adenosine infusion. Patients with epicardial spasm (>90%) were excluded; vasoconstriction between 20% and 90% was considered endothelial dysfunction., Results: Eighty-seven patients met the inclusion criteria. Of these 52 patients (60%) experienced chest pain during acetylcholine while 35 (40%) did not. Those with acetylcholine-induced chest pain demonstrated: (1) Increased CBF at rest (1.6 ± 0.7 vs. 1.2 ± 0.4, p  = 0.004) (2) Decreased IMR with acetylcholine (acetylcholine-IMR = 29.7 ± 16.3 vs. 40.4 ± 17.1, p  = 0.004), (3) Equivalent IMR following adenosine (Adenosine-IMR: 21.1 ± 10.7 vs. 21.8 ± 8.2, p  = 0.76), (4) Increased adenosine-induced chest pain (40/52 = 77% vs. 7/35 = 20%, p  < 0.0001), (5) Increased chest pain during exercise testing (30/46 = 63% vs. 4/29 = 12%, p  < 0.00001) with no differences in exercise duration or electrocardiographic changes, and (6) Increased prevalence of epicardial endothelial dysfunction (33/52 = 63% vs. 14/35 = 40%, p  = 0.03)., Conclusions: After excluding epicardial spasm, acetylcholine-induced chest pain is associated with increased pain during exercise and adenosine infusion, increased coronary blood flow at rest, decreased microvascular resistance in response to acetylcholine and increased prevalence of epicardial endothelial dysfunction. The unique optical cycling efficiency of alkaline earth metal-ligand molecules has enabled significant advances in polyatomic laser cooling and trapping. Rotational spectroscopy is an ideal tool for probing the molecular properties that underpin optical cycling, thereby elucidating the design principles for expanding the chemical diversity and scope of these platforms for quantum science. We present a comprehensive study of the structure and electronic properties in alkaline earth metal acetylides with high-resolution microwave spectra of 17 isotopologues of MgCCH, CaCCH, and SrCCH in their 2 Σ + ground electronic states. The precise semiexperimental equilibrium geometry of each species has been derived by correcting the measured rotational constants for electronic and zero-point vibrational contributions calculated with high-level quantum chemistry methods. The well-resolved hyperfine structure associated with the 1,2 H, 13 C, and metal nuclear spins provides further information on the distribution and hybridization of the metal-centered, optically active unpaired electron. Together, these measurements allow us to correlate trends in chemical bonding and structure with the electronic properties that promote efficient optical cycling essential to next-generation experiments in precision measurement and quantum control of complex polyatomic molecules.

We present an analysis of the hyperfine-resolved rotational spectrum of gas-phase phenyl radical, c -C 6 H 5 , between 9 and 35 GHz. The isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine parameters of all five protons and the electronic spin-rotation fine structure parameters are accurately determined from this study, which allow detailed insight into the distribution and interactions of the unpaired electron in this prototypical σ-radical. The implications for laboratory and astronomical investigations of phenyl that are reliant on a precise centimeter-wave catalog are discussed, as are the prospects for detecting and assigning the hyperfine-resolved rotational spectra of other large, weakly polar hydrocarbon chain and ring radicals.

Objectives: There are no widely accepted metrics to determine the optimal number and geographic distribution of trauma centers (TCs). We propose a Performance-based Assessment of Trauma System (PBATS) model to optimize the number and distribution of TCs in a region using key performance metrics., Methods: The proposed PBATS approach relies on well-established mathematical programming approach to minimize the number of level I (LI) and level II (LII) TCs required in a region, constrained by prespecified system-related under-triage (srUT) and over-triage (srOT) rates and TC volume. To illustrate PBATS, we collected 6002 matched (linked) records from the 2012 Ohio Trauma and EMS registries. The PBATS-suggested network was compared to the 2012 Ohio network and also to the configuration proposed by the Needs-Based Assessment of Trauma System (NBATS) tool., Results: For this data, PBATS suggested 14 LI/II TCs with a slightly different geographic distribution compared to the 2012 network with 21 LI and LII TC, for the same srUT≈.2 and srOT≈.52. To achieve UT ≤ .05, PBATS suggested 23 LI/II TCs with a significantly different distribution. The NBATS suggested fewer TCs (12 LI/II) than the Ohio 2012 network., Conclusion: The PBATS approach can generate a geographically optimized network of TCs to achieve prespecified performance characteristics such as srUT rate, srOT rate, and TC volume. Such a solution may provide a useful data-driven standard, which can be used to drive incremental system changes and guide policy decisions.

Escherichia coli infections in poultry cause significant morbidity and economic losses for producers each year. The structures of gas-phase noncovalently bound clusters have long been studied in supersonic expansions. This method of study, while providing a wealth of information about the nature of noncovalent bonds, precludes observation of the formation of the cluster, as the clusters form just after the orifice of the pulsed valve. Here, we directly observe formation of ethanol-methanol dimers via microwave spectroscopy in a controlled cryogenic environment. Time profiles of the concentration of reagents in the cell yielded gas-phase reaction rate constants of k Me - g = (2.8 ± 1.4) × 10 -13 cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 and k Me - t = (1.6 ± 0.8) × 10 -13 cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 for the pseudo-second-order ethanol-methanol dimerization reaction at 8 K. The relaxation cross section between the gauche and trans conformers of ethanol was also measured using the same technique. In addition, thermodynamic relaxation between conformers of ethanol over time allowed for selection of conformer stoichiometry in the ethanol-methanol dimerization reaction, but no change in the ratio of dimer conformers was observed with changing ethanol monomer stoichiometry.

During their thermally pulsing phase, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars eject material that forms extended dusty envelopes 1 . Visible polarimetric imaging found clumpy dust clouds within two stellar radii of several oxygen-rich stars 2-6 . Inhomogeneous molecular gas has also been observed in multiple emission lines within several stellar radii of different oxygen-rich stars, including W Hya and Mira 7-10 . At the stellar surface level, infrared images have shown intricate structures around the carbon semiregular variable R Scl and in the S-type star π 1  Gru 11,12 . Infrared images have also shown clumpy dust structures within a few stellar radii of the prototypical carbon AGB star IRC+10°216 (refs. 13,14 ), and studies of molecular gas distribution beyond the dust formation zone have also shown complex circumstellar structures 15 . Because of the lack of sufficient spatial resolution, however, the distribution of molecular gas in the stellar atmosphere and the dust formation zone of AGB carbon stars is not known, nor is how it is subsequently expelled. Here we report observations with a resolution of one stellar radius of the recently formed dust and molecular gas in the atmosphere of IRC+10°216. Lines of HCN, SiS and SiC 2 appear at different radii and in different clumps, which we interpret as large convective cells in the photosphere, as seen in Betelgeuse 16 . Cell divisions are accurately positioned to generate cells of the correct size and shape. In plant cells, the new cell wall is built in the middle of the cell by vesicles trafficked along an antiparallel microtubule and a microfilament array called the phragmoplast. The phragmoplast expands toward a specific location at the cell cortex called the division site, but how it accurately reaches the division site is unclear. We observed microtubule arrays that accumulate at the cell cortex during the telophase transition in maize (Zea mays) leaf epidermal cells. Before the phragmoplast reaches the cell cortex, these cortical-telophase microtubules transiently interact with the division site. Increased microtubule plus end capture and pausing occur when microtubules contact the division site-localized protein TANGLED1 or other closely associated proteins. Microtubule capture and pausing align the cortical microtubules perpendicular to the division site during telophase. Once the phragmoplast reaches the cell cortex, cortical-telophase microtubules are incorporated into the phragmoplast primarily by parallel bundling. The addition of microtubules into the phragmoplast promotes fine-tuning of the positioning at the division site. Objective: This qualitative study examined ethical challenges reported by healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in a large Australian pediatric oncology center during a period of strict COVID-19 restrictions., Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 HCPs who provided pediatric cancer care during the pandemic in 2020, during strict lockdown periods. Interviews examined the difficulties they faced, as well as their own ethical evaluation of the impact of COVID-19 policies on oncology care. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis and thematic analysis., Results: HCPs faced several challenges, primarily originating from hospital restrictions, which led to changes in usual clinical practices. These challenges included delivering care with personal protective equipment (PPE), the impact of a one-parent visitation policy, changes in psychosocial and allied health services, and COVID-19 swabbing policies. Overall, there was consensus from participants that hospital restrictions were justified and, while difficult, HCPs simply had to provide the best care possible given the circumstances. However, participants described decreased capacity to deliver holistic patient care and, in some instances, a tendency to avoid ethical reflection. Lastly, there was a consistent theme of shame and sense of responsibility underlying some participants' anxiety around inadvertently transmitting COVID-19 to immunocompromised patients., Conclusion: Our findings show that many staff felt unease at the disruptions in patient care due to COVID-19 restrictions. Some HCPs indicated a degree of moral distress, with a possibility of moral injury among some HCPs. The Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD; card.mcmaster.ca) combines the Antibiotic Resistance Ontology (ARO) with curated AMR gene (ARG) sequences and resistance-conferring mutations to provide an informatics framework for annotation and interpretation of resistomes. As of version 3.2.4, CARD encompasses 6627 ontology terms, 5010 reference sequences, 1933 mutations, 3004 publications, and 5057 AMR detection models that can be used by the accompanying Resistance Gene Identifier (RGI) software to annotate genomic or metagenomic sequences. Focused curation enhancements since 2020 include expanded β-lactamase curation, incorporation of likelihood-based AMR mutations for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, addition of disinfectants and antiseptics plus their associated ARGs, and systematic curation of resistance-modifying agents. This expanded curation includes 180 new AMR gene families, 15 new drug classes, 1 new resistance mechanism, and two new ontological relationships: evolutionary&#95;variant&#95;of and is&#95;small&#95;molecule&#95;inhibitor. In silico prediction of resistomes and prevalence statistics of ARGs has been expanded to 377 pathogens, 21,079 chromosomes, 2,662 genomic islands, 41,828 plasmids and 155,606 whole-genome shotgun assemblies, resulting in collation of 322,710 unique ARG allele sequences. Recently, searches were made for H 2 CCS and HCCSH in a variety of interstellar environments─all of them resulted in nondetections of these two species. Recent findings have indicated the importance of destruction pathways, e.g., with atomic hydrogen, in explaining the consistent nondetection of other species, such as the H 2 C 3 O family of isomers. We have thus performed ab initio calculations looking at reactions of H 2 CCS, HCCSH, and related species with atomic hydrogen. Our results show that H 2 CCS and HCCSH are both destroyed barrierlessly by atomic hydrogen, thus providing a plausible explanation for the nondetections. We further find that subsequent reactions with atomic hydrogen can barrierlessly lead to CH 3 CH 2 SH, which has been detected. Astrochemical simulations including these reactions result not only in reproducing the observed abundance of H 2 CCS in TMC-1 but also show that CH 3 CH 2 SH, produced via our H-addition pathways and subsequently trapped on grains, can desorb in warmer sources up to abundances that match previous observations of CH 3 CH 2 SH in Orion KL. These results, taken together, point to the importance of grain-surface H-atom addition reactions and highlight the chemical links between cold prestellar cores and their subsequent, warmer evolutionary stages.

Successful heifer rearing is dependent on achieving optimal average daily gain (ADG) targets to calve for the first time at 24 months. Whilst dairy farmers internationally have traditionally managed their heifers on-farm to achieve these targets, recent dairy herd expansion within Europe has resulted in increased demand for labour-saving heifer-rearing strategies, such as off-farm contractrearing. However, loss of direct influence on the day-to-day management decisions affecting the ability of heifers to grow adequately to achieve this age of first calving may represent a potential barrier to uptake. Hence, the aim of this longitudinal observational study was to compare the growth rates of contract- vs home-reared heifers. Approximately 6 500 heifers from 120 commercial Irish dairy farms were enrolled in a 3-year study. For 65 of these farms, heifers were reared at a contract-rearing facility. For the remaining 55 farms, heifers were reared on their home farm. Over the course of 20 months from birth until precalving, heifers were examined and weighed at four farm visits. The relationship between several independent variables (farm type, herd size, heifer breed, economic breeding index (EBI) and health events) and ADG at different time points was investigated and analysed utilising linear mixed models. Overall ADG for heifers throughout the rearing period was 0.71 kg/day. There was a significant association between farm type and ADG for all five linear ADG models; home-reared heifers grew, on average, 0.025, 0.039, 0.11 and 0.059 kg/day more than contract-reared heifers between visit 1 and visit 4 (overall ADG), visit 1 and visit 2, visit 2 and visit 3 and visit 1 and visit 3, respectively. The occurrence of diarrhoea during farm visit 2 (median age 8.5 months) was associated with a significant reduction in ADG between visit 3 and visit 4. Calf-hood disease (diarrhoea, respiratory disease or navel ill) was not associated with the growth rate during any of the subsequent visit periods. While home-reared heifers had greater ADG during four of the five periods studied, median heifer ADG in both cohorts exceeded the minimum published target weight gains at each developmental stage required for heifers to reach puberty, conceive at 15 months and calve for the first time at 24 months. Importantly, there was wide variation both within enterprises and between farms. It was concluded that while the absolute difference in daily growth rates of home- and contract-reared heifers was minimal, when considered in the context of the entire heifer-rearing period, these growth rate differences have the potential to impact the future reproductive and milk production performance of heifers., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). The global poultry industry has grown to the extent that the number of chickens now well exceeds the number of humans on Earth. Escherichia coli infections in poultry cause significant morbidity and economic losses for producers each year. We obtained 94 E. coli isolates from 12 colibacillosis outbreaks on Saskatchewan farms and screened them for antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation. Fifty-six isolates were from broilers with confirmed colibacillosis, and 38 isolates were from healthy broilers in the same flocks (cecal E. coli ). Resistance to penicillins, tetracyclines, and aminoglycosides was common in isolates from all 12 outbreaks, while cephalosporin resistance varied by outbreak. Most E. coli were able to form biofilms in at least one of three growth media (1/2 TSB, M63, and BHI broth). There was an overall trend that disease-causing E. coli had more antibiotic resistance and were more likely to form biofilms in nutrient-rich media (BHI) as compared to cecal strains. However, on an individual strain basis, there was no correlation between antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation. The 21 strongest biofilm forming strains consisted of both disease-causing and cecal isolates that were either drug resistant or susceptible. Draft whole genome sequencing indicated that many known antimicrobial resistance genes were present on plasmids, with disease-causing E. coli having more plasmids on average than their cecal counterparts. We tested four common disinfectants for their ability to kill 12 of the best biofilm forming strains. All disinfectants killed single cells effectively, but biofilm cells were more resistant, although the difference was less pronounced for the disinfectants that have multiple modes of action. This study describes the behavioral and emotional adjustment of 77 children and adolescents 3 months post-treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), compared to 52 age and sex-matched healthy peers. Parents, teachers, and self-report ratings on the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) were utilized to measure psychological function. While overall mean scores were in the average range for both groups, parents and teachers rated patients higher on behavior symptoms, internalizing problems and adaptive skill difficulties. No significant differences between groups were observed on self-report, and inter-rater correlations were low to moderate. For the ALL group, maternal university completion was associated with elevations on parent report of behavioral problems, while no other factors predicted either parent or teacher report on other scales.
