7. Climate Conundrum: A Wet or Dry European and Northern African Climate During the Middle Miocene.

Abstract

End of 21st‐century hydroclimate projections suggest an expansion of subtropical dry zones, with Mediterranean and Sahel regions becoming much drier. However, paleobotanical assemblage evidence from the middle Miocene (17‐12 Ma), suggests both regions were instead humid environments. Here we show that by modifying regional sea surface temperatures (SST) in an Earth System Model (CESM1.2) simulation of the middle Miocene, the increased ocean evaporation and integrated water vapor flux overrides any drying effects associated with warming‐induced land‐surface evaporation driven by atmospheric CO2 concentrations. These modifications markedly reduce the bias in the model‐data comparison for this period. A vegetation model (BIOME4) forced with simulated climatologies predicts both regions were dominated by mixed forest, which is largely consistent with the paleobotanical record. This study unveils the potential for wetter subtropical Mediterranean climates associated with warming, presenting an alternative scenario from future drying projections with localized SST warming governing regional climate change. Plain Language Summary: Climate models project drier conditions over Europe and Northern Africa due to global warming. However, evidence from a past warm climate period, the middle Miocene (∼15 million years ago), finds wetter rather than drier environments. We refine climate model boundary conditions by reconstructing warmer ocean waters in the North Atlantic based on proxy evidence. The warmer ocean produces wetter environments by enhancing North Atlantic precipitation events and the North African monsoon. The increased rainfall and surface temperature cause a vegetation model to predict more forest coverage over Europe and Northern Africa, which is consistent with fossil evidence from ∼15 million years ago. This study unveils the potential for wetter climates associated with warming, presenting an alternative scenario from future drying projections, with localized sea surface warming governing regional climate. Abstract

Haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (haplo-HCT) is associated with an increased risk of allograft rejection. Here, we employed a major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-mismatched allogeneic HCT (allo-HCT) murine model to better understand the role of Gal-1 in immune tolerance. Transplanted mice were classified into either rejected or engrafted based on donor chimerism levels. We noted significantly higher frequencies of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, natural killer cells, IFN-g and TNF-a producing CD4+ T cells, and IFN-g producing dendritic cells and macrophages in rejected mice. Conversely, we found significantly increased frequencies of regulatory T cells (Tregs), predominantly Helios+, IL-10-producing CD4+ T cells, type 1 regulatory (Tr1) cells, and the proportion of Tr1+Gal-1+ cells in engrafted mice. Further, Gal- 1 specific blockade in Tregs reduced suppression of effector T cells in engrafted mice. Lastly, effector T cells from engrafted mice were more prone to undergo apoptosis. Collectively, we have shown that Gal-1 may favor HSC engraftment in an MHC-mismatched murine model. Our results demonstrate that Gal-1- expressing Tregs, especially at earlier time points post-transplant, are associated with inducing immune tolerance and stable mixed chimerism after HCT. 12. Labour implications of the net-zero transition and clean energy exports in Australia

Abstract

We examine the employment implications of a domestic net-zero transition and establishment of clean energy export systems for an historically significant energy exporting country, through a case study of Australia. The labour impacts of a multi-decadal transition are simulated across both the domestic and export energy systems, considering a wide range of energy technologies, resources and activities, with assessment according to occupation, lifecycle stage, education and skill requirements. Across all net-zero scenario pathways, by mid-century, the total gross employment created for the domestic and export sectors comprises 210–490 thousand jobs and 350–510 thousand jobs, respectively. This represents a significant expansion of energy sector employment from the current total of 120 thousand across domestic and export sectors, an increase from less than 1 % of the total Australian workforce in 2020 to 3–4 % by 2060. The need to build out energy system infrastructure at large-scale over a number of decades results in construction jobs continuing over that timeframe and a subsequent need for a large ongoing operations and maintenance workforce for new energy system assets. Those employed in domestic energy markets work primarily in utility solar PV, onshore wind, batteries and electricity transmission and distribution activities, while export market jobs are dominated by clean hydrogen production and shipping supply chains. Crucially, these export jobs are unevenly distributed across the country, in regions of highest quality solar resource. All states and territories experience net job growth across each decade to 2060. However, in a few sub-state regions, net job losses occur in the short-term.

15. Money Aspirations about Living Well: Middle School Student Perceptions

Abstract

Adolescent aspirations associated with perceptions of "living well" were qualitatively evaluated based on 187 middle school student responses. Using grounded theory methodology, 976 words and phrases were coded and grouped; 41.9% were extrinsic, 36.3% were intrinsic, and 21.8% of the passages were merely descriptive. Extrinsic coded words and phrases emphasized things they would own or purchase; intrinsic coded words emphasized how they would live or who they would become. Extrinsic middle school aspirations were highly status laden, clearly linking expensive and exclusive possessions with self-image and identity. Intrinsic aspirations were characterized by major themes of growth and relatedness emphasizing positive family relationships and the development of skills and personal qualities. Implications for financial education are discussed.

Abstract

We report experimental observations of hexaroll chaos in inclined layer convection. Two separate populations of defect complexes characterize the defect turbulent state, one the classical penta-hepta defect of hexagonal planform patterns, and the other a short-lived complex capable of self-annihilation. By measuring the defect statistics we show that short-lived defect complexes give rise to linear defect destruction rates.
