Abstract

This document is an output of the DFID funded research project R7033 "Methodological Framework for Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches for Socio-Economic Survey Work". The project's main objective was to improve survey methodologies used in the natural resources sector, leading in turn to improved quality of information required for decision-making at the various stages of natural resources programmes and projects. The project, which was jointly implemented by the Natural Resources Institute and the Statistical Services Centre, attempted to bridge the gap between informal I qualitative methods on the one hand and formal I quantitative ones on the other. The document is presented in the form of a manual, allowing the user to read each of its parts and sections independently of each other. Nevertheless, cross references indicate links to other parts of the document where appropriate. Part I provides a methodological framework, which will also be available as a Best-Practice Guideline published by the Natural Resources Systems Programme of DFID. Part 11, which contains six theme papers, looks into a number of practical issues encountered when combining quantitative and qualitative survey techniques. And finally, in Part III case studies are used to demonstrate how the two approaches can be integrated in survey work and experiments related to the natural resources sector. The framework document, theme papers and case studies have been produced between 1998 and 2000.

11. Learning and livelihoods: The experience of the FSIPM project in southern Malawi

Abstract

Do resource-poor farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face severe crop losses from pests and diseases? What are the different ways that rural households earn a living, and who are the poor? How does social organization shape the way that new technology is used and shared? How can we encourage farmers to participate in the design and evaluation of field experiments, yet still obtain results that are statistically valid? How can we create 'learning projects' that can change direction in response to the needs of their clients and what they find on the ground? These were some of the questions that challenged the Farming Systems Integrated Pest Management Project during four years of intensive fieldwork with resource-poor farmers in the Blantyre Shire Highlands, southern Malawi. In searching for answers, the project drew on expertise from pest management, agronomy, economics and anthropology. Learning and Livelihoods: The Experience of the FSIPM Project in Southern Malawi reflects on the project's experience, reviews the major lessons learned, and outlines an agenda for a follow-up project that addresses smallholders' needs for food security, cash income and information about new technology. The book will appeal not only to those interested in Malawi but also to those concerned with the wider issues raised by developing technology with resource poor farmers.

Abstract

In three experiments we examined whether emotional faces (Experiment 1 and 2), and valenced scenes (Experiment 3), would induce spatial biases in attention. In Experiment 1 participants were briefly shown one of two schematic faces, either smiling or sad, in the center of a computer screen. The face was immediately replaced by a target letter presented either at the top or bottom of the screen. Participants were quicker to identify targets at the top half of the screen but only after viewing a smiling face. In Experiment 2 we investigated and eliminated the possibility that this effect was being driven simply by the shapes of the "mouths" in the happy face (turned upwards) and sad face (turned downwards) rather than the emotional nature of the faces. In Experiment 3, participants evaluated pleasant and unpleasant scenes shown either at the top or bottom of a computer screen. Reaction time to pleasant scenes was quicker at the top of the screen, and quicker to unpleasant scenes at the bottom of the screen. These findings add to a growing body of research concerning the interaction between affective stimuli and spatial attention and show that spatial biases can be influenced by briefly presented non-verbal affective stimuli (Experiment 1), and that spatial position can influence the evaluation of emotionally toned scenes (Experiment 3).
