An adaptive frequency-domain equalization (FDE) algorithm for implementation in single-carrier (SC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is presented. A novel method of reducing the overhead required to train the proposed equalizer is outlined.

Abstract

Upper bounds for symbol-error probability are developed for multichannel reception of M-ary phase-shift keying (M-PSK) over frequency-flat Rayleigh-fading channels. Differential coherent demodulation of differentially encoded M-PSK (M-DPSK), pilot-tone aided coherent demodulation of M-PSK (PTA M-CPSK) and pilot-symbol aided coherent demodulation of M-PSK (PSA M-CPSK) are considered in the formulation. The bounds enable the investigation of the effects of fading correlation and unequal average power level between channels using postdetection diversity reception with maximal-ratio combining. Error-performance degradation due to imperfect demodulation effects, such as Doppler spread in M-DPSK schemes, noisy reference signals in PTA M-CPSK, and PSA M-CPSK schemes can be taken into account in the formulation. Exact bit-error probabilities for both binary and quaternary phase-shift keying are also derived. Abstract

This article presents a performance evaluation of various multi-antenna concepts based on OFDM for Wireless LANs. The studies are based on state-of-the-art measured channel data in the 5GHz band. The investigated techniques include: spatial multiplexing (BLAST), space frequency trellis coded modulation, their concatenation, turbo bit interleaved coded modulation and turbo space frequency trellis coded modulation. The studies aim to assess the MIMO concepts for future high speed WLANs. Index Terms--MIMO, WLAN, Space-time, OFDM.

Abstract

In this contribution we propose an analogue receiver that can perform turbo detection in MIMO systems. We present the case for a receiver that is built from nonlinear analogue devices, which perform detection in a "free-flow" network (no notion of iterations). This contribution can be viewed as an extension of analogue turbo decoder concepts to include MIMO detection. These first analogue implementations report reductions of few orders of magnitude in the number of required transistors and in consumed energy, and the same order of improvement in processing speed. It is anticipated that such analogue MIMO decoder could bring about the same advantages, when compared to traditional digital implementations.

14. A Radio Resource Scheduling Algorithm for a Sectorized Cellular Co-operative Network

Abstract

This paper investigates radio resource scheduling for a sectorized cellular co-operative network. A method based on a scheduling matrix is proposed andimplemented to get the optimal solution for resource block scheduling in a cellular network and the resulting optimal cases show three types of transmission: full cooperation, non-cooperation and 2/3 reuse. According to the results of the optimal solution, a low-complex location-based algorithm which aims to maximize the total network bandwidth efficiency is then proposed. The results from the proposed algorithm show that it can achieve nearly 99% of the optimal bandwidth efficiency whilst reducing the complexity significantly.

15. Radio Resource Scheduling Algorithms for Cooperative Cellular Networks with Shadowing Effects

Abstract

This paper investigates radio resource scheduling for a cooperative cellular network. A method based on exhaustive search is used to get the optimal solution. According to the results from the optimal solution, two power based algorithms which aim to maximize the total network bandwidth efficiency and to reduce the complexity are then proposed. The results from the proposed algorithms show that they can achieve 93.03% and 97.21% of the optimal total bandwidth efficiency respectively whilst also reducing the complexity significantly. In addition, one of the proposed algorithms also exhibits a superior performance in a non-shadowing setting, achieving over 99% of the optimum total bandwidth efficiency.

Abstract

In order to evaluate the performance of third-generation mobile communication systems, radio channel models are required. The models should be capable of handling nonstationary scenarios with dynamic evolution of multipaths. In this context and due to the introduction of advanced antenna systems to exploit the spatial domain, a further expansion is needed in order to include the nonstationary characteristics of the channel. In an attempt to solve these problems, this paper presents a new stochastic spatiotemporal propagation model. The model is a combination of the geometrically-based single reflection and the Gaussian wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering models, and is further enhanced in order to be able to handle nonstationary scenarios. The probability density functions of the number of the multipath components, the scatterers' lifetime, and the angle of arrival are calculated to support these features. The input parameters of the model are based on results from measurement campaigns published in the open literature. Index Terms--Antenna arrays, radio channel model, wireless communications.

18. PAPR reduction for single carrier FDMA LTE systems using frequency domain spectral shaping

Abstract

The low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in single- carrier systems has motivated the Long Term Evolution (LTE) Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to adopt single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) as the uplink multiple access scheme. In a single-carrier (SC) system, traditional time domain pulse shaping is used to bandlimit the transmit signal. In this paper we show that by applying a frequency domain spectral shaping filter to SC-FDMA, the PAPR of a localized FDMA (LFDMA) signal can be further reduced at the expense of degraded bandwidth efficiency. Simulation results show that a PAPR reduction of 1.3 dB can be achieved for LFDMA when a raised cosine frequency domain spectral shaping filter with a roll-off factor of 0.22 is applied. Compared to the unfiltered system, the resulting bandwidth efficiency is 78.1%. This PAPR reduction can be used to enhance the power efficiency of the handset, or alternatively to improve uplink throughput and/or operating range.
