Abstract

Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are two psychiatric disorders with overlapping features that can be challenging to separate diagnostically. Growing evidence suggests that circadian rhythm disturbances are associated with psychiatric illness, however circadian patterns of behaviour have not been elucidated in BPD or differentiated from BD. This study compared the circadian structure and timing of rest-activity patterns in BPD with BD and healthy volunteers. Participants with BD (N = 31) and BPD (N = 21) and healthy controls (HC, N = 35) wore an actigraph on their non-dominant wrist for 28 day periods as part of the Automated Monitoring of Symptom Severity (AMoSS) study. Non-parametric circadian rhythm analysis of rest-activity patterns and cosinor analysis of distal temperature rhythms were conducted to elucidate circadian function between groups. Abstract

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric condition that has been strongly associated with changes in sleep and circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are near 24-h cycles that are primarily generated by an endogenous circadian timekeeping system, encoded at the molecular level by a panel of clock genes. Stimulant and non-stimulant medication used in the management of ADHD has been shown to potentially impact on circadian processes and their behavioral outputs. In the current study, we have analyzed circadian rhythms in daily activity and sleep, and the circadian gene expression in a cohort of healthy controls (N = 22), ADHD participants not using ADHD-medication (N = 17), and participants with ADHD and current use of ADHD medication (N = 17). Rhythms of sleep/wake behavior were assessed via wrist-worn actigraphy, whilst rhythms of circadian gene expression were assessed ex-vivo in primary human-derived dermal fibroblast cultures. Behavioral data indicate that patients with ADHD using ADHD-medication have lower relative amplitudes of diurnal activity rhythms, lower sleep efficiency, more nocturnal activity but not more nocturnal wakenings than both controls and ADHD participants without medication. At the molecular level, there were alterations in the expression of PER2 and CRY1 between ADHD individuals with no medication compared to medicated ADHD patients or controls, whilst CLOCK expression was altered in patients with ADHD and current medication. Analysis of fibroblasts transfected with a BMAL1:luc reporter showed changes in the timing of the peak expression across the three groups. Taken together, these data support the contention that both ADHD and medication status impact on circadian processes.

Abstract

© 2014 Elsevier B.V. Microchemical analysis of otolith (calcified 'ear stones' used for balance and orientation) of fishes is an important tool for studying their environmental history and management. However, the spatial resolution achieved is often too coarse to examine short-term events occurring in early life. Current methods rely on single points or transects across the otolith surface, which may provide a limited view of elemental distributions, a matter that has not previously been investigated. Imaging by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) permits microchemical analyses of short-term events in early life with high (97% was achieved using a multi-point non matrix-matched calibration of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 610 and 612 (trace elements in glass) using Longerich's calculation method against the matrix-matched standard FEBS-1 (powdered red snapper [Lutjanus campechanus] otolith). The spatial resolution achieved in the otolith corresponded to a time period of 2±1days during the larval phase, and 4±1days during the post-settlement juvenile phase. This method has the potential to improve interpretations of early life-history events at scales corresponding to specific events. While the images showed gradients in Sr and Ba across the larval settlement zone more clearly than single transects, the method proved sample homogeneity throughout the structure; demonstrating that 2D scanning has no significant advantage over line scans.

Abstract

The potential of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) as a tool for the characterisation of ochre paint used in indigenous Australian bark paintings has been investigated. TG has been combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mass spectrometry (MS) to identify and quantify the main inorganic and organic components present in the paints. The results obtained were supported by comparison with infrared spectra and XRD data obtained for the same specimens. The potential of thermal methods for the characterisation ochres has been demonstrated, with subtle differences between small samples being able to be identified. © 2011 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

Abstract

The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) provides a structure from which relationships among specific cognitive-behavioral and motivational mechanisms, and health behaviors such as smoking cessation, can be examined. Considerable empirical evidence supports the TTM as a promising model to predict smoking cessation readiness. However, the use of the processes of change have been equivocal; some processes are used more frequently at certain stages than others, and there is no evidence that certain processes move individuals through the stages, or that the processes are exclusive to certain stages. Additionally, other mediating constructs such as Self Efficacy and Decisional Balance were shown to be related to smoking behavior. The TTM has been primarily tested on white, employed populations, and the cultural specificity and cross-economic status applicability of this theory/model has not been established. This study purpose was to determine the relationships among Self-Efficacy, Decisional Balance, and the Processes and Stages of Change in 50 Mexican American women who smoke cigarettes. The variables important to this sample of Mexican American women included those Processes of Change that indicate decision making and commitment, rewarding oneself, expressing feelings, supportive relationships, and concern for others. These findings suggest that strategies useful in enhancing these processes, such as values clarification, social support, decision-making therapy, and empathy training might be beneficial in strengthening the decision and commitment for smoking cessation in Mexican American women. Abstract

Introduction: Differences in the relationship between mood and digital communication metrics have been shown to act as a diagnostic marker in Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Anxiety has been associated with mobile-phone use in non-clinical populations, although a potential association between anxiety and digital communications in BD or BPD populations hasn't been studied. Objectives: To explore the association between self-reported anxiety symptoms and objective, naturalistic digital communications metrics in BD and BPD participants. Methods: BD (n= 17) and BPD (n=17) cohorts were provided with a smartphone application which monitored phone call and SMS frequency and duration, alongside weekly self-reported anxiety (Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale). Linear mixed-effects regression models assessed the association between digital communications, anxiety state and interaction effects between anxiety and diagnosis. Results: Self-reported anxiety state was negatively associated with decreased total call frequency (B=-5.150, p=0.002), cumulative total call duration (seconds; B=-1456.779, p<0.001), cumulative outgoing call duration (seconds; B=-1108.23, p<0.001), total SMS frequency (B=-31.412, p<0.001), outgoing SMS frequency (B=-16.443, p<0.001), cumulative total SMS length (characters; B=-1664.78, p=0.001) and cumulative outgoing SMS length (characters; B=- 857.770, p=0.005) for BD, but not BPD, participants. Associations remained significant after adjusting for mood. Conclusions: These results further suggest that BPD individuals, compared to BD individuals, exhibit persistent social interaction during mental distress. Together with previous findings, this effect appears to be common, but independent, for both selfreported anxiety and depression. These findings inform our understanding of the psychopathology of the two conditions, and may contribute to the development of tools to aid their diagnostic differentiation.
