Abstract

Web-based applications are highly accessible to users, providing rich, interactive content while eliminating the need to install software locally. However, evolutionary robotics (ER) has faced challenges in this domain as web-based technologies have not been amenable to 3D physics simulations. Traditionally, physics-based simulations require a local installation and a high degree of user knowledge to configure an environment, but the emergence of Javascript-based physics engines enables complex simulations to be executed in web browsers. These developments create opportunities for ER research to reach new audiences by increasing accessibility. In this work, we introduce two web-based tools we have built to facilitate the exchange of ideas with other researchers as well as outreach to K-12 students and the general public. Abstract

Autonomic computing systems must be able to detect and respond to errant behavior or changing conditions with little or no human intervention. Clearly, decision making is a critical issue in such systems, which must learn how and when to invoke corrective actions based on past experience. This paper describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of MESO, a pattern classifier designed to support online, incremental learning and decision making in autonomic systems. A novel feature of MESO is its use of small agglomerative clusters, called sensitivity spheres, that aggregate similar training samples. Sensitivity spheres are partitioned into sets during the construction of a memory-efficient hierarchical data structure. This structure facilitates data compression, which is important to many autonomic systems. Results are presented demonstrating that MESO achieves high accuracy while enabling rapid incremental training and classification. A case study is described in which MESO enables a mobile computing application to learn, by imitation, user preferences for balancing wireless network packet loss and bandwidth consumption. Once trained, the application can autonomously adjust error control parameters as needed while the user roams about a wireless cell. Abstract

The informed mobility optimization problem is studied, and localized algorithms are designed to make mobility decisions using both mobility benefit and mobility cost. Based on these algorithms, iMobif, a framework to coordinate node mobility so as to optimize energy consumption in wireless ad hoc networks is proposed, and simulations show that iMobif is effective in reducing energy consumption when compared to systems with no mobility or only cost-unaware mobility.

Abstract

Algorithmic enhancements are described that enable large computational reduction in mean square-error data clustering. These improvements are incorporated into a parallel data-clustering tool, P-CLUSTER, designed to execute on a network of workstations. Experiments involving the unsupervised segmentation of standard texture images were performed. For some data sets, a 96 percent reduction in computation was achieved. Abstract

A communication model uses the concept of extended dominating nodes (EDN) to execute some fundamental collective communication operations, specially the EDN-based broadcast and global combine operations, in multiport wormhole-routed mesh networks. The model exploits the concept of dominating sets in graph theory by taking into account the relative distance-insensitivity of the wormhole switching strategy. It also makes use of the multiport model which allows every node to transmit signals on different outgoing channels simultaneously.

Abstract

A broadcast algorithm, based on the Extended Dominating Node (EDN) model, helps to enhance the performance of all-port wormhole-routed parallel networks with torus topologies. It uses the theory of dominating nodes and an all-port communication architecture that allows simultaneous transfer of messages on different outgoing channels by each node. Analytical and simulation-based evaluation of the EDN broadcast algorithm demonstrates its superiority over other broadcast approaches. Specific architectural features of massively parallel computer networks have been discussed.

Abstract

A minimum time multicast algorithm is useful for efficient multicast communication in wormhole-routed torus networks. The algorithm uses the properties of switching technology and virtual channels. The algorithm generates multiple trees in which the unicast messages are not restricted to the same channel. The algorithm transmits multicast message to m - 1 targets by (log2 m) message-passing steps. The performance of the algorithm is unaffected by the sharing of physical links by messages transmitted on distinct virtual channels.

Abstract

A novel technique developed to observe routine devices in wormhole-routed networks aims to create a conducive condition for deadlock-free routing which at the same time also would be deadlock-immune. This message flow model can be used to show the deadlock free character of a wormhole routing mechanism for which the CAD based models can be applied. This model helps the precise movement of message, so it can be suitable to a broad range of routing device. In this system messages are categorized into different subsets and channelized. It also helps the 2-D mesh by arranging a nonminimal-path adaptive multicast routing device in 2-D meshes.

Abstract

A wormhole routed n-dimensional mesh is used for the efficient implementation of multicast communication services for scalable multiprocessors. The mesh includes several commercial machines, and the U-cube and U-mesh multicast algorithm yield contention-free minimum-time multicast trees. The wormhole routed method is implemented on a 64-node nCUBE-2 and a 168-node Symult 2010. This method is more efficient than other conventional methods.
