Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold. Firstly, it was undertaken to establish whether teenage mothers were motivated to re-engage with education postpregnancy. Secondly, to consider whether Educational Psychologists could support the long-term educational outcomes of teenage mothers. Five teenage mothers between the ages of 16-19 were interviewed using semi-structured interviews, to explore this further: a) What are the views of teenage mothers living within an outer London Borough about their individual educational experiences? b) What similarities and differences are there between their avowed identity and ascribed identity? c) What are their future aspirations? d) Where is the teenage mother situated in structural society? The researcher employed Foucauldian Discourse Analysis to analyse discourse from the participants and discourses within the wider discursive field. This study explored how Educational Psychologists could practice psychology to support teenage mothers in re-engaging with education post pregnancy, which may improve the economic and social prospects of the teenage mother, her long term outcomes and those of her child. Findings indicated that the teenage mothers found motherhood fulfilling indeed and motherhood was in fact an important motivational factor in their future aspirations. Findings also strongly indicated that there is a need for discursive formations which encompass diversity and difference amongst teenage mothers and wholesomely defines their strengths and potential in order to reproduce the “truth”. Research should develop educational programs and in particular literacy programs based on the theory of cultural production in order to equip teenage mothers with language and critical thinking skills in which to negotiate their need for equal access to power and resources; and reposition themselves in order to negate widely held societal presumptions about young mothers. Herein lies the challenge for a new social reality.

Abstract

Objective: This retrospective observational study aimed to compare the impact of the Prevent Alcohol and Risk‐Related Trauma Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program when delivered as In‐hospital or Outreach models to rural and regional students. Methods: The study population were consented participants from regional areas between 2013 and 2017 who completed pre‐programme, immediately post‐programme and 3–5 months post‐programme surveys. Responses from the metropolitan In‐hospital programme participants and regional Outreach programme participants were analysed within groups across the three time points. The primary outcome variable was a change in self‐reported perception of driving after drinking alcohol. Secondary outcome variables were designating a safe driver after drinking, perception of risk of injury if not wearing a seatbelt, risks of injury if undertaking physical risk‐taking activities and likelihood of the programme changing perceptions. Results: There were 1314 participants invited to participate and 547 (42%) sets of complete surveys were received, of whom 296 (54%) were Outreach participants. Pre‐programme, a significantly lower proportion of Outreach participants reported 'definitely not' to driving after drinking (84% vs 91%), and perceived a 'definite' likelihood of sustaining injury if not wearing a seatbelt (57% vs 66%). Outreach participants displayed improvements in likelihood to drive after drinking alcohol immediately post‐programme and on follow up (P = 0.028). Responses to all other secondary outcome measures demonstrated some improvement. Conclusions: Although demographically similar, baseline perceptions toward alcohol, risk‐taking and injury differed between groups. Improvements in perception were demonstrated across both models. These findings support P.A.R.T.Y. as an injury prevention initiative for regional youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. ORP-3,a human oxysterol-binding protein gene differentially expressed in hematopoietic cells

Abstract

Using differential display polymerase chain reaction, a gene was identified in CD34+-enriched populations that had with low or absent expression in CD34−populations. The full coding sequence of this transcript was obtained, and the predicted protein has a high degree of homology to oxysterol-binding protein. This gene has been designated OSBP-related protein 3 (ORP-3). Expression of ORP-3was found to be 3- to 4-fold higher in CD34+cells than in CD34−cells. Additionally, expression of this gene was 2-fold higher in the more primitive subfraction of hematopoietic cells defined by the CD34+38−phenotype and was down-regulated with the proliferation and differentiation of CD34+cells. The ORP-3 predicted protein contains an oxysterol-binding domain. Well-characterized proteins expressing this domain bind oxysterols in a dose-dependent fashion. Biologic activities of oxysterols include inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis and cell proliferation in a variety of cell types, among them hematopoietic cells. Characterization and differential expression of ORP-3 implicates a possible role in the mediation of oxysterol effects on hematopoiesis.
