Dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) show great promise for applications in spin-based electronics, but in most cases continue to elude explanations of their magnetic behavior. Here, we combine quantitative x-ray spectroscopy and Anderson impurity model calculations to study ferromagnetic Fe-substituted In$_2$O$_3$ films, and we identify a subset of Fe atoms adjacent to oxygen vacancies in the crystal lattice which are responsible for the observed room temperature ferromagnetism. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we map out the near gap electronic structure and provide further support for this conclusion. Serving as a concrete verification of recent theoretical results and indirect experimental evidence, these results solidify the role of impurity-vacancy coupling in oxide-based DMSs.

We study the crystalline and electronic properties of the $\textrm{Fe}_{1-x}\textrm{Co}_x\textrm{Se}$ system ($x=0$, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) using X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory. We show that the introduction of Co $3d$ states in FeSe relaxes the bond strengths and induces a structural transition from tetragonal to hexagonal whose crossover takes place at $x\approx0.38$. This structural transition in turn modifies the magnetic order which can be related to the spin state. Using resonant inelastic X-ray spectroscopy we estimate the spin state of the system; FeSe is found to be in a high spin state (S=2), but Fe is reduced to a low spin state upon Co substitution of $x \le 0.25$, well below the structural transition. Finally, we show evidence that FeSe is a moderately correlated system but the introduction of Co into the host lattice weakens the correlation strength for $x\ge0.25$. By studying Fe-doped ZnO pellets and thin films with various x-ray spectroscopic techniques, and complementing this with density functional theory calculations, we find that Fe-doping in bulk ZnO induces isovalent (and isostructural) cation substitution (Fe2+ -> Zn2+). In contrast to this, Fe-doping near the surface produces both isovalent and heterovalent substitution (Fe3+ -> Zn2+). The calculations performed herein suggest that the most likely defect structure is the single or double substitution of Zn with Fe, although, if additional oxygen is available, then Fe substitution with interstitial oxygen is even more energetically favourable. Furthermore, it is found that ferromagnetic states are energetically unfavourable, and ferromagnetic ordering is likely to be realized only through the formation of a secondary phase (i.e. ZnFe2O4), or codoping with Cu., Comment: 29+ pages, 8 figures, 1 table. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) measurements of pellet and thin film forms of TiO$_2$ with implanted Fe ions are presented and discussed. The findings indicate that Fe-implantation in a TiO$_2$ pellet sample induces heterovalent cation substitution (Fe$^{2+}\rightarrow$ Ti$^{4+}$) beneath the surface region. But in thin film samples, the clustering of Fe atoms is primarily detected. In addition to this, significant amounts of secondary phases of Fe$^{3+}$ are detected on the surface of all doped samples due to oxygen exposure. These experimental findings are compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of formation energies for different configurations of structural defects in the implanted TiO$_2$:Fe system. According to our calculations, the clustering of Fe-atoms in TiO$_2$:Fe thin films can be attributed to the formation of combined substitutional and interstitial defects. We study the electronic properties of the $\textrm{Fe}\textrm{Se}_{1-x}\textrm{Te}_x$ system ($x=0$, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) from the perspective of X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). The analysis performed on the density of states reveals marked differences in the distribution of the $5p$ states of Te for $x>0$. We think that this finding can be associated with the fact that superconductivity is suppressed in FeTe. Moreover, using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we estimate the spin state of our system which can be correlated to the magnetic order. We find that the spin state of the $\textrm{Fe}\textrm{Se}_{1-x}\textrm{Te}_x$ system fluctuates, as a function of $x$, between $S=0$ and $S=2$ with Fe in FeSe in the highest spin state. Finally, our DFT calculations nicely reproduce the X-ray emission spectra performed at the Fe $L$-edge (which probe the occupied states) and suggest that the $\textrm{Fe}\textrm{Se}_{1-x}\textrm{Te}_x$ system can be considered at most as a moderately correlated system., Comment: 5 figures, 27 pages. The electronic structures of Sn and Pb implanted SiO2 are studied using soft X-ray absorption (XAS) and emission (XES) spectroscopy. We show, using reference compounds and ab initio calculations, that the presence of Pb-O and Sn-O interactions can be detected in the pre-edge region of the oxygen K-edge XAS. Via analysis of this interaction-sensitive pre-edge region, we find that Pb implantation results primarily in the clustering of Pb atoms. Conversely, with Sn implantation using identical conditions, strong Sn-O interactions are present, showing that Sn is coordinated with oxygen. The varying results between the two ion types are explained using both ballistic considerations and density functional theory calculations. We find that the substitution of Pb into Si sites in SiO2 requires much more energy than substituting Sn in these same sites, primarily due to the larger size of the Pb ions. From these calculated formation energies it is evident that Pb requires far higher temperatures than Sn to be soluble in SiO2. The electronic structure of BaFe2As2 doped with Co, Ni, and Cu has been studied by a variety of experimental and theoretical methods, but a clear picture of the dopant 3d states has not yet emerged. Herein we provide experimental evidence of the distribution of Co, Ni, and Cu 3d states in the valence band. We conclude that the Co and Ni 3d states provide additional free carriers to the Fermi level, while the Cu 3d states are found at the bottom of the valence band in a localized 3d10 shell. These findings help shed light on why superconductivity can occur in BaFe2As2 doped with Co and Ni but not Cu., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

Natural 12CaO$\cdot$7Al$_2$O$_3$ (C12A7) is a wide bandgap insulator, but conductivity can be realized by introducing oxygen deficiency. Currently, there are two competing models explaining conductivity in oxygen-deficient C12A7, one involving the electron transfer via a "cage conduction band" inside the nominal band gap, the other involving electron hopping along framework lattice sites. To help resolve this debate, we probe insulating and conducting C12A7 with X-ray emission, X-ray absorption, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, which provide a full picture of both the valence and conduction band edges in these materials. These measurements suggest the existence of a narrow conduction band between the main conduction and valence bands common in both conducting and insulating C12A7 and support the theory that free electrons in oxygen-deficient C12A7 occupy the low-energy states of this narrow band. We have investigated the electronic structure and the Fermi surface of SnO using density functional theory (DFT) calculations within recently proposed exchange-correlation potential (PBE+mBJ) at ambient conditions and high pressures up to 19.3 GPa where superconductivity was observed. It was found that the Sn valence states 5s, 5p, and 5d are strongly hybridized with the O 2p-states, and that our DFT-calculations are in good agreement with O K-edge X-ray spectroscopy measurements for both occupied and empty states. It was demonstrated that the metallic states appearing under pressure in the semiconducting gap stem due to the transformation of the weakly hybridized O 2p-Sn 5sp subband corresponding to the lowest valence state of Sn in SnO. We discuss the nature of the electronic states involved in chemical bonding and formation of the hole and electron pockets with nesting as a possible way to superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We consider mass-conserving self-similar solutions for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with kernel $K(\xi,\eta)= (\xi \eta)^{\lambda}$ with $\lambda \in (0,1/2)$. It is known that such self-similar solutions $g(x)$ satisfy that $x^{-1+2\lambda} g(x)$ is bounded above and below as $x \to 0$. In this paper we describe in detail via formal asymptotics the qualitative behavior of a suitably rescaled function $h(x)=h_{\lambda} x^{-1+2\lambda} g(x)$ in the limit $\lambda \to 0$. It turns out that $h \sim 1+ C x^{\lambda/2} \cos(\sqrt{\lambda} \log x)$ as $x \to 0$. As $x$ becomes larger $h$ develops peaks of height $1/\lambda$ that are separated by large regions where $h$ is small. Finally, $h$ converges to zero exponentially fast as $x \to \infty$. Our analysis is based on different approximations of a nonlocal operator, that reduces the original equation in certain regimes to a system of ODE.

The electronic structure of the new superconducting material LaNiPO experimentally probed by soft X-ray spectroscopy and theoretically calculated by the combination of local density approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (LDA+DMFT) are compared herein. We have measured the Ni L2,3 X-ray emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectra which probe the occupied and unoccupied the Ni 3d states, respectively. In LaNiPO, the Ni 3d states are strongly renormalized by dynamical correlations and shifted about 1.5 eV lower in the valence band than the corresponding Fe 3d states in LaFeAsO. We further obtain a lower Hubbard band at -9 eV below the Fermi level in LaNiPO which bears striking resemblance to the lower Hubbard band in the correlated oxide NiO, while no such band is observed in LaFeAsO. These results are also supported by the intensity ratio between the transition metal L2 and L3 bands measured experimentally to be higher in LaNiPO than in LaFeAsO, indicating the presence of the stronger electron correlations in the Ni 3d states in LaNiPO in comparison with the Fe 3d states in LaFeAsO. These findings are in accordance with resonantly excited transition metal L3 X-ray emission spectra which probe occupied metal 3d-states and show the appearance of the lower Hubbard band in LaNiPO and NiO and its absence in LaFeAsO., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the crystallization of amorphous arsenic-selenium alloys with 0%, 0.5%, 2%, 6%, 10%, and 19% arsenic by atomic concentration using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We identify crystalline order using the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra and correlate this order to changes in features of the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra. We find supporting evidence that the structure of amorphous selenium is composed of disordered helical chains, and is therefore closer to the trigonal crystalline phase than the monoclinic crystalline phase., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have performed a systematic study of the electronic structures of BiMeO3 (Me = Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) series by soft X-ray emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectroscopy. The band gap values were estimated for all compounds in the series. For BiFeO3 a band gap of ~0.9 eV was obtained from the alignment of the O Ka XES and O 1s XAS. The O 1s XAS spectrum of BiNiO3 indicates that the formation of holes is due to a Ni2+ valency rather than a Ni3+ valency. We have found that the O Ka XES and O 1s XAS of BiMeO3 probing partially occupied and vacant O 2p states, respectively, are in agreement with the O 2p densities of states obtained from spin-polarized band structure calculations. The O Ka XES spectra show the same degree of Bi 6s--O 2p hybridization for all compounds in the series. We argue herein that the stereochemical activity of Bi 6s lone pairs must be supplemented with inversion symmetry breaking to allow electric polarization. For BiMnO3 and BiFeO3, two cases of multiferroic materials in this series, the former breaks the inversion symmetry due to the antiferromagnetic order induced by particular orbital ordering in the highly distorted perovskite structure and the latter has rhombohedral crystal structure without inversion symmetry., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

The electronic structure in alkaline earth AeO (Ae = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) and post-transition metal oxides MeO (Me = Zn, Cd, Hg) is probed with oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. The experimental data is compared with density functional theory electronic structure calculations. The origin of the gap in NiS2 as well as the pressure- and doping-induced metal-insulator transition in the NiS2-xSex solid solutions are investigated both theoretically using the first-principles band structures combined with the dynamical mean-field approximation for the electronic correlations and experimentally by means of infrared and x-ray absorption spectroscopies. The bonding-antibonding splitting in the S-S (Se-Se) dimer is identified as the main parameter controlling the size of the charge gap. The implications for the metal-insulator transition driven by pressure and Se doping are discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Results of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at Fe L-edges and electronic structure calculations of LiFeAs and NaFeAs are presented. Both experiment and theory show that in the vicinity of the Fermi energy, the density of states is dominated by contributions from Fe 3d-states. The comparison of Fe L2,3 non-resonant and resonant (excited at L2-threshold) X-ray emission spectra with spectra of LaOFeAs and CaFe2As2 show a great similarity in energy and I(L2)/I(L3) intensity ratio. The I(L2)/I(L3) intensity ratio of all FeAs-based superconductors is found to be more similar to metallic Fe than to correlated FeO. Basing on these measurements we conclude that iron-based superconductors are weakly or moderately correlated systems., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations and a full set of X-ray spectra (resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray photoelectron spectra) measurements of single crystal CaFe2As2. The experimental valence band spectra are consistent with our DFT calculations. Both theory and experiment show that the Fe 3d-states dominate the Fermi level and hybridize with Ca 3d-states. The simple shape of Xray photoelectron (XPS) Fe 2p-core level spectrum (without any satellite structure typical for correlated systems) suggests itinerant character of the Fe 3d-electrons. Based on the similarity of the calculated and experimental Fe 3d-states distribution in LaOFeAs and CaFe2As2 we conclude that superconductivity in the FeAs-systems can be described within a minimal model, taking into account only Fe 3d-bands close to the Fermi level., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures inline with text

In this work we propose a new method for investigating connection problems for the class of nonlinear second-order differential equations known as the Painlev{\'e} equations. Such problems can be characterized by the question as to how the asymptotic behaviours of solutions are related as the independent variable is allowed to pass towards infinity along different directions in the complex plane. Connection problems have been previously tackled by a variety of methods. Frequently these are based on the ideas of isomonodromic deformation and the matching of WKB solutions. However, the implementation of these methods often tends to be heuristic in nature and so the task of rigorising the process is complicated. The method we propose here develops uniform approximations to solutions. This removes the need to match solutions, is rigorous, and can lead to the solution of connection problems with minimal computational effort. Our method is reliant on finding uniform approximations of differential equations of the generic form ${d^2\phi}/{d\eta^2} = - \xi^2F(\eta,\xi)\phi$ as the complex-valued parameter $\xi \to \infty.$ The details of the treatment rely heavily on the locations of the zeros of the function $F$ in this limit. If they are isolated then a uniform approximation to solutions can be derived in terms of Airy functions of suitable argument. On the other hand, if two of the zeros of $F$ coalesce as $|\xi| \to \infty$ then an approximation can be derived in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. In this paper we discuss both cases, but illustrate our technique in action by applying the parabolic cylinder case to the ``classical'' connection problem associated with the second Painlev{\'e} transcendent. Future papers will show how the technique can be applied with very little change to the other Painlev{\'e} equations, and to the wider problem of the asymptotic behaviour of the general solution to any of these equations., Comment: 28 pages, amstex, no figures

We consider the Einstein/Yang-Mills equations in $3+1$ space time dimensions with $\SU(2)$ gauge group and prove rigorously the existence of a globally defined smooth static solution. We show that the associated Einstein metric is asymptotically flat and the total mass is finite. Thus, for non-abelian gauge fields the Yang/Mills repulsive force can balance the gravitational attractive force and prevent the formation of singularities in spacetime., Comment: 4 pages
