Abstract Maternal health is a global public health concern. The paucity of antenatal care (ANC) during pregnancy is directly associated with maternal mortality. This study assessed the individual and community-level determinants of quality ANC in six South-Asian countries. Data were obtained from a Demographic health survey of six South-Asian countries. This study included a sample of 180,567 (weighted) women aged 15–49 who had given birth in the preceding three years prior to the survey. The quality of ANC was determined by assessing whether a woman had received blood pressure monitoring, urine and blood sample screening, and iron supplements at any ANC visits. Frequency, percentage distribution, and inferential analysis (multilevel mixed-effects model) were conducted. The proportion of quality antenatal care utilization in South Asia was 66.9%. The multilevel analysis showed that women aged 35–49 years (AOR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.09–1.24), higher education (AOR = 2.84; 95% CI = 2.69–2.99), middle wealth status (AOR = 1.55; 95% CI = 1.49–1.62), richest wealth status (AOR = 3.21; 95% CI = 3.04–3.39), unwanted pregnancy (AOR = 0.92; 95% CI = 0.89–0.95) and 2–4 birth order (AOR = 0.86; 95% CI = 0.83–0.89) were among the individual-level factors that were significantly associated with quality ANC utilization. In addition, rural residence (AOR = 0.77; 95% CI = 0.74–0.8), and big problem – distance to health facility (AOR = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.53–0.76) were the among community level factors there were also significantly associated with use of quality ANC. Meanwhile, women who lived in India (AOR: 22.57; 95% CI: 20.32–25.08) and Maldives (AOR: 33.33; 95% CI: 31.06–35.76) had higher odds of quality ANC than those lived in Afghanistan. Educational status, wealth status, pregnancy wantedness, sex of household head, birth order, place of residence, and distance to health facility were associated with quality ANC. Improving educational status, improving wealth status, reducing the distance to health facilities, and providing rural area-friendly interventions are important to increase the quality of ANC in South Asia.

Abstract Climate change affects Indian agriculture, which depends heavily on the spatiotemporal distribution of monsoon rainfall. Despite the nonlinear relationship between crop yield and rainfall, little is known about the optimal rainfall threshold, particularly for monsoon rice. Here, we investigate the responses of rice yield to monsoon rainfall in India by analyzing historical rice production statistics and climate data from 1990 to 2017. Results show that excessive and deficit rainfall reduces rice yield by 33.7% and 19%, respectively. The overall optimal rainfall threshold nationwide is 1621 ± 34 mm beyond which rice yield declines by 6.4 kg per hectare per 100 mm of rainfall, while the identifiable thresholds vary spatially across 14 states. The temporal variations in rice yield are influenced by rainfall anomalies featured by El Niño-Southern Oscillation events.

K-Homology domain (KH domain) proteins bind single-stranded nucleic acids, influence protein–protein interactions of proteins that harbor them, and are found in all kingdoms of life. In concert with other functional protein domains KH domains contribute to a variety of critical biological activities, often within higher order machineries including membrane-localized protein complexes. Eukaryotic KH domain proteins are linked to developmental processes, morphogenesis, and growth regulation, and their aberrant expression is often associated with cancer. Prokaryotic KH domain proteins are involved in integral cellular activities including cell division and protein translocation. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic KH domains share structural features, but are differentiated based on their structural organizations. In this review, we explore the structure/function relationships of known examples of KH domain proteins, and highlight cases in which they function within or at membrane surfaces. We also summarize examples of KH domain proteins that influence bacterial virulence and pathogenesis. We conclude the article by discussing prospective research avenues that could be pursued to better investigate this largely understudied protein category.

Abstract Many polymer-based medical devices are sterilized by gamma irradiation. To reduce the use of cobalt-60 gamma-ray sources, transition from gamma ray to alternative irradiation technologies was proposed, namely electron beam (e-beam) and X-ray. A major impediment for such a transition is the knowledge gap in material compatibility with the different radiation sources. In this study, multi-layer films consisting of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) components were irradiated to target doses of 30, 45, and 60 kGy by gamma-ray, e-beam, and X-ray sources. Effects of irradiation were evaluated on 12 material properties, and statistical comparisons between gamma irradiation and alternative technologies were conducted using the two one-sided t-test (or “equivalence test”) and classic t-test. Melting temperature and UV absorbance below 300 nm showed dose dependencies, while other investigated properties such as discoloration and mechanical durability did not change with dose up to 60 kGy. Based on these results, there is no material compatibility issue associated with the transition from gamma to e-beam or to X-ray as source of sterilization radiation of the studied multi-layer film.

Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are supervised learning models used to examine data sets in order to classify or predict dependent variables. SVM is typically used for classification by determining the best hyperplane between two classes. However, working with huge datasets can lead to a number of problems, including time-consuming and inefficient solutions. This research updates the SVM by employing a stochastic gradient descent method. The new approach, the extended stochastic gradient descent SVM (ESGD-SVM), was tested on two simulation datasets. The proposed method was compared with other classification approaches such as logistic regression, naive model, K Nearest Neighbors and Random Forest. The results show that the ESGD-SVM has a very high accuracy and is quite robust. ESGD-SVM is used to analyze the heart disease dataset downloaded from Harvard Dataverse. The entire analysis was performed using the program R version 4.3.

Purpose – There is an absence of systematic review papers in the achievement motivation theories literature. In terms of current research trends, English learning motivation is gaining attention as a determiner of success in FLA. Hence, this review aims to trace the trends in the empirical studies on achievement motivation theories and tools, ranging from 1970 to 2022. Methodology – With a focus on theories, diversity of research participants, and practical ELT-related issues addressed by previous researchers, this paper applied the PRISMA Systematic Review Protocol to offer a comprehensive synthesis of 91 empirical studies on theories of achievement motivation. Findings – The majority of the published studies were from China and Iran. There was also a large number of studies conducted on tertiary-level learners. Structural equation modelling was found to be the most widely used analysis. In addition, technology-assisted learning is the current trend in achievement motivation research. Significance – This paper offers new insights into the existing achievement motivation literature and identifies the research gaps. This study recommends more studies on expectancy-value theory including in-depth qualitative studies involving culturally diverse populations and experimental research to develop more effective pedagogical approaches and expand the current understanding of achievement motivation.

The objective of this research is to assess the seismic performance of different types of electrical cabinets in nuclear power plants. The cabinets under investigation are: (a) Case 1: a short single cabinet; (b) Case 2: a tall single cabinet; (c) Case 3: separated cabinets; and (d) Case 4: a combined cabinet with coupling effects. To accurately capture the real behavior of the cabinet, three-dimensional finite element models are developed using ANSYS with connection non-linearity. Frequency domain decomposition (FDD) is used to determine the dynamic properties of the cabinets from shaking table testing data, and these results are utilized to validate the numerical model. The close match between the experimental and numerical results obtained from the modal analysis demonstrates the accuracy of the numerical model. Subsequently, transient structural analysis is performed on the validated models to explore seismic performance. The results show that the acceleration response of the combined cabinet is lower than the single cabinet and the separated cabinet. This observation suggests that top anchors used to combine two different types of cabinets play a crucial role in assessing the efficiency and seismic resistance of electrical cabinets in a nuclear power plant.

Effective management of lactating sows significantly influences various aspects of swine production. This study compared the impact of an hourly feeding regime and a five-times-daily feeding regime on the productive performance, body condition, and welfare of lactating sows, as well as on the growth performance of their offspring. Twenty-eight lactating sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were divided into two groups: Group 1 was fed five times a day, and Group 2 was fed according to an hourly regime. The data were analyzed using independent-samples T-tests and the Mann–Whitney U test using Statistical Analysis System (SAS, 2011, Version 9.3) software. An hourly feeding regime positively affected (p < 0.05) sows’ feed intake and body condition, significantly reducing the days from the weaning-to-estrus interval. Group 1 exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.05) reductions in backfat thickness (BFT) and body condition score (BCS) during the weaning period compared to Group 2. Additionally, significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in regard to sow body weight loss, feed intake, piglet livability and mortality rate at weaning, sow index, and calculated milk yield. Feeding sows according to an hourly regime positively impacted their productive performance compared to those fed five times daily. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were recorded in regard to the total number of piglets born, live births, mummified piglets, stillbirths, piglet mortality, litter size at weaning, and sow feed conversion ratio (FCR). However, the number of piglets weaned per sow per year (PSY) was numerically higher in Group 2 (p > 0.05). The piglets from Group 2 had significantly higher (p < 0.05) weaning weights and exhibited lower feed intake, greater weight gain, improved average daily gain, and greater litter size weight gain than those from Group 1. Statistically, sows from Group 2 exhibited a higher frequency of standing (p < 0.05), which potentially contributed to the reduction in shoulder skin lesions in sows (p > 0.05). In conclusion, an hourly feeding regime could optimize sow productive performance, body condition, milk yield, welfare, and piglet growth in swine production.

Abstract Type III secretion system (T3SS) effector proteins are primarily recognized for binding host proteins to subvert host immune response during infection. Besides their known host target proteins, several T3SS effectors also interact with endogenous bacterial proteins. Here we demonstrate that the Salmonella T3SS effector glycosyltransferase SseK1 glycosylates the bacterial two-component response regulator OmpR on two arginine residues, R15 and R122. Arg-glycosylation of OmpR results in reduced expression of ompF, a major outer membrane porin gene. Glycosylated OmpR has reduced affinity to the ompF promoter region, as compared to the unglycosylated form of OmpR. Additionally, the Salmonella ΔsseK1 mutant strain had higher bile salt resistance and increased capacity to form biofilms, as compared to WT Salmonella, thus linking OmpR glycosylation to several important aspects of bacterial physiology.

Objectives This study investigated the inequalities in access to maternal healthcare services in Bangladesh.Design and setting This study used cross-sectional data from the nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 2017–2018. The survey encompassed diverse regions and households across Bangladesh. The study used the Human Opportunity Index (HOI) and Shapley’s decomposition technique to measure the inequality in access to maternal healthcare opportunities.Participants This study included 20 127 women aged 15–49 years. Among them, 5012 women had live births in the preceding 3 years of the survey, forming the study sample.Primary and secondary outcome measures This study has no secondary outcome variable. The primary dependent variable is ‘adequate maternal healthcare’, a dichotomous variable.Results Household wealth status contributed the highest to inequality in accessing adequate maternal healthcare services (41.4%) such as receiving at least four antenatal care (ANC) visits (39.7%), access to proper ANC (50.7% and 44.0%) and health facility birth (43.4%). Maternal educational status contributes the second highest inequality among all factors in accessing adequate maternal healthcare (29.5%). Adequate maternal healthcare presented the lowest coverage rate and opportunity index among all (approximately 24% with HOI=17.2).Conclusions We found that attained adequate maternal healthcare had the lowest coverage and widest dissimilarity, while wealth index, education and place of residence are the major factors that contribute to inequalities in accessibility to maternal healthcare services in Bangladesh. These findings underscore a need for pro-poor interventions to narrow the economic inequalities between the poor and rich in terms of accessibility to maternal healthcare services. The results indicate the need for the Bangladeshi government and its health department to strengthen their commitment to improving female education. Investments should be made in initiatives that facilitate the proximity of maternal healthcare services to women in rural areas.

Vietnam heavily relies on pork as its primary source of animal protein. Traditional farming methods, characterized by small-scale operations, dominate the industry. However, challenges such as rising feed costs, disease outbreaks, and market volatility are prompting many farmers to abandon their businesses. Recognizing the pivotal role of the swine sector in both economic development and nutrition, authorities must intervene to prevent its collapse. In developed nations, smart pig farming, utilizing technologies like sensors and cameras for data collection and real-time decision-making, has significantly improved health and productivity. These technologies can detect subtle indicators of animal well-being, enabling prompt intervention. This review aims to analyze the drivers of Vietnam’s swine farming, identify existing production system flaws, and explore innovative precision farming methods worldwide. Embracing precision farming promises to enhance Vietnam’s competitiveness in export markets and bolster consumer confidence. However, reliance solely on expensive foreign technologies may benefit large-scale farms, leaving smaller ones behind. Therefore, fostering local innovation and validating cost-effective solutions will be crucial for the sustainable growth of small- and medium-scale pig farming in Vietnam.

This work provides an overview on micromirror arrays based on different material systems such as dielectrics, element silicon, compound semiconductors, metals, and novel 2D materials. The goal is to work out the particular strength of each material system to enable optimum performance for various applications. In particular, this review is intended to draw attention to the fact that MEMS micro-mirrors can be successful in many other material systems besides silicon. In particular, the review is intended to draw attention to two material systems that have so far been used less for MEMS micromirror arrays, that have been less researched, and of which fewer applications have been reported to date: metallic heterostructures and 2D materials. However, the main focus is on metallic MEMS micromirror arrays on glass substrates for applications like personalized light steering in buildings via active windows, energy management, active laser safety goggles, interference microscopy, and endoscopy. Finally, the different micromirror arrays are compared with respect to fabrication challenges, switching speed, number of mirrors, mirror dimensions, array sizes, miniaturization potential for individual mirrors, reliability, lifetime, and hinge methodology.

In animal farming, timely estrus detection and prediction of the best moment for insemination is crucial. Traditional sow estrus detection depends on the expertise of a farm attendant which can be inconsistent, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. Attempts and trials in developing and implementing technological tools to detect estrus have been explored by researchers. The objective of this review is to assess the automatic methods of estrus recognition in operation for sows and point out their strong and weak points to assist in developing new and improved detection systems. Real-time methods using body and vulvar temperature, posture recognition, and activity measurements show higher precision. Incorporating artificial intelligence with multiple estrus-related parameters is expected to enhance accuracy. Further development of new systems relies mostly upon the improved algorithm and accurate data provided. Future systems should be designed to minimize the misclassification rate, so better detection is achieved.

The importance of backfat thickness in sows lies in its correlation with nutritional status, reproductive performance, and overall health. Identifying the optimum backfat thickness is crucial for determining the ideal energy reserves needed to support successful reproduction and lactation. This research aimed to determine optimal backfat thickness (BFT) of sows in relation to reproductive and lactation performance. Due to limited motor capabilities, people with upper limb disabilities have trouble utilizing a typical mouse while operating a computer. Different wearable Assistive Mouse Controllers (AMCs) have been developed to overcome their challenges. However, these people may not be able to realize the importance, ease of use, and social approval of these AMCs due to their fear of new technology, lack of confidence, and lack of ingenuity. These may negatively affect their attitude and intention toward accepting AMCs for equitable human-computer interaction. This study presents the development of a sensor-based head-mounted AMC, followed by an empirical analysis of its acceptance using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) from the socioeconomic perspective of Bangladesh. In a similar vein, we examined the effects of three additional psychological constructs-technology anxiety, confidence, and innovation, on its acceptance along with the original components of the TAM. A total of 150 individuals with stroke-induced upper limb disability participated in an online survey, and their responses were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling, following the general least square method. Analysis revealed, about 96.44% of the participants had positive attitude towards the AMC, and almost 88.56% of them had positive intentions to accept it. Furthermore, about 68.61% of them expressed signs of anxiety, 96.35% were confident, and 94.16% of them had an innovative mindset in terms of device usage. The findings imply that individuals with an innovative mentality are more capable of comprehending the practical implications of a new technology than those without one. It is also feasible to reduce technological anxiety and boost a user's confidence while using an AMC by combining an innovative mentality with straightforward device interaction techniques. Additionally, peer encouragement and motivation can significantly enhance their positive attitude towards accepting the AMC for facilitating their interaction with a computer.

BackgroundSocial anxiety disorder (SAD) is prevalent among children and adolescents. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has been used as the first-line treatment. However, evaluation of CBT conducted in a school setting has been scarce.ObjectivesThis study aims to review the CBT and its effectiveness in the school setting for children and adolescents with SAD or social anxiety symptoms. Quality assessment on individual studies was conducted.MethodsStudies were identified through the search in PsycINFO, ERIC, PubMed and Medline targeting CBT conducted in a school setting with an aim to treat children and adolescents with SAD or social anxiety symptoms. Randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies were selected.ResultsA total of 7 studies met the inclusion criteria. Five studies were randomised controlled trials, and two were quasi-experimental studies with 2558 participants aged 6-16 years from 138 primary schools and 20 secondary schools. There were minor effects to reduce social anxiety symptoms for children and adolescents at post-intervention in 86% of the selected studies. Friend for Life (FRIENDS), Super Skills for Life (SSL) and Skills for Academic and Social Success (SASS) conducted in school were more effective than the control conditions.ConclusionsThere is a lack of quality of the evidence for FRIENDS, SSL and SASS, due to inconsistencies on the outcome assessments, statistical analyses, and the fidelity measures adopted in individual studies. Insufficient school funding and workforce with relevant health background, and the low level of parental involvement in the intervention would be the major challenges in school-based CBT for children and adolescents with SAD or social anxiety symptoms.

BackgroundHealth systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) can be strengthened when quality information on health worker performance is readily available. With increasing adoption of mobile health (mHealth) technologies in LMICs, there is an opportunity to improve work-performance and supportive supervision of workers. The objective of this study was to evaluate usefulness of mHealth usage logs (paradata) to inform health worker performance.MethodologyThis study was conducted at a chronic disease program in Kenya. It involved 23 health providers serving 89 facilities and 24 community-based groups. Study participants, who already used an mHealth application (mUzima) during clinical care, were consented and equipped with an enhanced version of the application that captured usage logs. Three months of log data were used to determine work performance metrics, including: (a) number of patients seen; (b) days worked; (c) work hours; and (d) length of patient encounters.Principal findingsPearson correlation coefficient for days worked per participant as derived from logs as well as from records in the Electronic Medical Record system showed a strong positive correlation between the two data sources (r(11) = .92, p < .0005), indicating mUzima logs could be relied upon for analyses. Over the study period, only 13 (56.3%) participants used mUzima in 2,497 clinical encounters. 563 (22.5%) of encounters were entered outside of regular work hours, with five health providers working on weekends. On average, 14.5 (range 1-53) patients were seen per day by providers.Conclusions / significancemHealth-derived usage logs can reliably inform work patterns and augment supervision mechanisms made particularly challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Derived metrics highlight variabilities in work performance between providers. Log data also highlight areas of suboptimal use, of the application, such as for retrospective data entry for an application meant for use during the patient encounter to best leverage built-in clinical decision support functionality.

Thalassaemia is a commonly occurring hereditary disorder. There is a high prevalence of thalassaemia disease in South-East Asia as well as Bangladesh. It is an autosomal recessive disorder, so consanguineous marriage is a very important factor for this disease. Mutated beta globin gene of haemoglobin from both parents is responsible for this disease to occur. But when the number of thalassaemia carriers is miserably high, then only avoidance of consanguineous marriage can’t prevent the birth of children with thalassaemia major. So, this cross sectional study was conducted among 120 diagnosed (by haemoglobin electrophoresis or high performance liquid chromatography) thalassaemia major patients in the Department of Haematology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka from July 2019 to May 2020. History from each patient was taken and blood samples were collected from their parents to confirm carrier state by haemoglobin electrophoresis. Blood samples were also collected from patients and their parents toperform complete blood count and peripheral Blood Film. This study showed the mean age of the participants was 15±9.34 and 73 (60.8%) patients were male and 47 (39.2%) were female. About, 71% of the study population lived in urban area, 81 (67%) patients were transfusion dependent thalassaemia patients. 15% thalas- saemia major patients had the history of consanguinity of their parents. Among the parents of the thalassaemia major patients, 62.5% were Beta thalassaemia trait (heterozygous state), 25.83% parents were Hb E trait ( heterozygous state), 7.08% parents were suffering from Beta Thalassaemia Major(homozygous state) and 11 (4.58%) parents were suffering from Hb E/Beta Thalassaemia which is a compound heterozygous state. Though consanguinity is a very influential factor, but the most important causative factor is the presence of high number of thalassaemia carrier in the population. So, it’s a burning issue for the nation to perform a routine carrier screening for all rather than focusing on consanguinity only, to lessen the burden of thalassaemia disease in Bangladesh. Background: There are currently no reports showing the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and menopause among Bangladeshi women with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Aim: The present study aims to examine the prevalence of MetS and evaluate the impact of menopausal status on the MetS among women with CVD in Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: Data for the present analysis were collected from a cross-sectional study of 355 cardiovascular patients seeking care at five tertiary care hospitals in Bangladesh. A total of 146 women were included for this secondary analysis. The MetS was identified based on the definition of the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Results: About 45.83% pre-menopausal and 59.02% post-menopausal women were noticed to have MetS. The mean waist circumference, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and random plasma glucose levels were higher in post-menopausal women whereas HDL cholesterol value was higher in pre-menopausal women. The multivariate-adjusted odds ratio showed that post-menopausal status (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.72; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04-4.94) and obesity (AOR: 8.20; 95% CI: 1.15-58.77) were significantly associated with the presence of the MetS among women with CVD. Conclusion: The high prevalence of MetS among women with CVD is evident, particularly post-menopausal women. Hence, the present findings can alert women from the earlier stages of the menopausal transition to prevent the appearance of MetS.

Abstract The achievement of curriculum goals and objectives, to a large extent, depends on how assessment methods are designed, implemented, monitored, and evaluated. English language learning in Bangladesh has miserably failed, and ineffective assessment methods may be largely attributed to this failure. This paper attempts to address various aspects and issues of English language assessment in Bangladesh in relation to English language learning as a curricular reform and the education policy of the country. The analysis revealed that there was always a gap between the principles of assessment embedded into the curriculum and the actual assessment practices. Furthermore, heavily hard hit by the high-stakes testing, the curriculum, the learners, and the instructors need to be liberated from this vicious policy. The review concluded with a recommendation that teachers need to develop assessment literacy through teacher education programs that are essential to helping teachers to acquire knowledge, skills, professionalism, and assessment expertise.

This research aims to analyze the existence of the Indonesian verbs “berkata”, “bersabda”, and “berfirman” (to say, to state). The method of document study was executed to provide the data, namely the translation of the Holy Quran (2004). Although it is unfair to compare the language of Indonesia and the language of Java from a speech level point of view, this paper is simply meant to trace how the words of the language of Indonesia show its speech levels in its own way. The Indonesian verbs “berfirman”, “bersabda”, and “berkata” are used to describe the activity of ‘saying’ or ‘speaking’ of God (berfirman), the Prophet Muhammad (bersabda), and people in common (berkata). It is concluded here that there are speech levels in the language of Indonesia, but they are not to compare with the speech levels like in the language of Java, Bali, Madura, Sunda, and or Sasak of Lombok.

Genetic fingerprinting of 110 rice cultivars of Bangladesh was completed with five polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers such as RM153, RM251, RM333, RM335 and RM475. The amplified DNA fragments are known as alleles from Polymarase Chain Reaction (PCR) reactions were separated on 2% agarose gel electrophoresis system, subsequently visualized by high performance ultraviolet transilluminator. In all, 99 distinctive alleles averaging 19.80 alleles/locus from the entire utilized microsatellite loci were counted. Several diversity indexes such as Polymorphism Information Content (PIC), heterozygosity, and cluster analysis were computed in this quantitative investigation. Superior genetic differentiation and inferior gene flow values among the cultivars were revealed from the recorded genetic diversity study of PIC, Effective allele, Shannon index (I), Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), Neis gene diversity (h), along with genetic differentiation-Fis and gene flow-Nm analysis. A total, 5995 varietal pairs were achieved all the way through alternative combinations of 110 rice cultivars where their Neis genetic distance (D) was ranged from zero to 2.832. Neis genetic-base an Unweighted Pair Group Method of Arithmetic Means (UPGMA) diagram was assembled which eventually separated all the cultivars from each other according to their genetic distance and similarity. Thus the finding of this study will expose such strategies to distinct all the wild relatives, cultivars and commercial varieties of rice or any other crop species having various genetic levels to facilitate further improvement and protection in future. This paper reports a plasma reactive oxygen species (ROS) method for decontamination of PPE (N95 respirators and gowns) using a surface DBD source to meet the increased need of PPE due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A system is presented consisting of a mobile trailer (35 m3) along with several Dielectric barrier discharge sources installed for generating a plasma ROS level to achieve viral decontamination. The plasma ROS treated respirators were evaluated at the CDC NPPTL, and additional PPE specimens and material functionality testing were performed at Texas A&M. The effects of decontamination on the performance of respirators were tested using a modified version of the NIOSH Standard Test Procedure TEB-APR-STP-0059 to determine particulate filtration efficiency. The treated Prestige Ameritech and BYD brand N95 respirators show filtration efficiencies greater than 95% and maintain their integrity. The overall mechanical and functionality tests for plasma ROS treated PPE show no significant variations.

The prolonged use, incorrect diagnosis, unnecessary prescription, improper dosing over the year has transformed klebsiella organisms into resistant to antibiotics. The emergence of resistance to many antibiotics and drugs makes treatment options limited. Now, the antibiotic pipeline has become severely dry. So, there is a pressing necessity for a new drug against Klebsiella oxytoca infections as well as the identification of drug targets. In this study, a systematic proteome subtractive method is used to screen out the most potential drug targets of Klebsiella oxytoca that might facilitate the discovery of putative drug in the near future. The comparative proteome analysis of host and pathogen was made to identify the non-homologous proteins which showed no similarity with human host proteins. KEGG pathway analysis was made to identify common and unique metabolic pathways. A computational analysis was carried out to list out the indispensable non-homologous proteins of the pathogen. Essential proteins were predicted by the analysis of protein-protein interactions networks to reveal the proteins which are exigent for the survival of the pathogen, and these proteins also have a lethal effect when removed from the pathogen. In this study, 43 essential proteins were identified. To predict subcellular localization, CELLO (version 2.5) and PSORTb (version 3.00) tools were used. The druggability of proteins was predicted using the DrugBank database. Besides, the physiochemical properties of proteins were analyzed using the Protparam tool of ExPASy. After physiochemical properties analysis and the based on 3D structure availability in the Protein Data Bank, the homology model was built for only one influential drug target using MODELLER. In the end, molecular docking study was carried out to investigate the protein interactions with five different drugs.

This review aimed to examine the extent of Bangladesh’s COVID-19 preparedness and control measures up to 20 January 2021, and to draw some lessons for informing the current and future pandemic responses in Bangladesh in light of Vietnam’s responses, which had successfully controlled the pandemic. We performed a content analysis of data to identify similarities and critical discrepancies in epidemiological features and COVID-19 responses between the two countries. Findings indicated that Vietnam reported lower COVID-19 incidence (15 cases per million) and death rate (0.4 cases per million) than Bangladesh, with 3,129 cases per million and a death rate of 46 cases per million. Vietnam reported only 35 deaths, with 22 older individuals (>60 years) compared with 7,950 deaths in Bangladesh, with the highest death rate in older people (45%). An integrated approach combined with widespread contact tracing, better health investment, vaccine development, and strong political commitment enabled Vietnam to control the disease and mitigate its impacts. In contrast, Bangladesh seemed to adopt inadequate and untimely measures in the same domains, potentially contributing to relatively high COVID-19 infections and death rates. To control COVID-19 or inform responses to future pandemics, Bangladesh and similar countries can learn eight lessons from Vietnam. Such transferable responses could prepare health systems and populations for an appropriate global response to the next potential pandemic.

BackgroundE-learning is a relatively trending system of education that has been placed over conventional campus-based learning worldwide, especially since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess e-learning readiness among university students of a developing country like Bangladesh and identify the independent predictors of e-learning readiness.MethodsFrom 26 December 2020 to 11 January 2021, a total of 1162 university students who had enrolled for e-learning completed a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were collected online via "Google Form" following the principles of snowball sampling through available social media platforms in Bangladesh. A multivariable linear regression model was fitted to investigate the association of e-learning readiness with perceived e-learning stress and other independent predictor variables.ResultsA total of 1162 university students participated in this study. The results indicated that with the increase of students' perceived e-learning stress score, the average e-learning readiness score was significantly decreased (β = -0.43, 95% CI: -0.66, -0.20). The students did not seem ready, and none of the e-learning readiness scale items reached the highest mean score (5.0). The age, gender, divisional residence, preference of students and their parents, devices used, and having any eye problems were significantly associated with the students' e-learning readiness.ConclusionDuring the prolonged period of the COVID-19 pandemic, e-learning implication strategies are needed to be assessed systematically with the level of readiness and its' impacts among students for the continuation of sound e-learning systems. The study findings recommend evaluating the e-learning readiness of university students and the mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 catastrophe in Bangladesh.

We are interested in identifying and characterizing small molecule inhibitors of bacterial virulence factors for their potential use as anti-virulence inhibitors. We identified from high-throughput screening assays a potential activity for avasimibe, a previously characterized acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase inhibitor, in inhibiting the NleB and SseK arginine glycosyltransferases from Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica, respectively. Avasimibe inhibited the activity of the Citrobacter rodentium NleB, E. coli NleB1, and S. enterica SseK1 enzymes, without affecting the activity of the human serine/threonine N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) transferase. Avasimibe was not toxic to mammalian cells at up to 200 µM and was neither bacteriostatic nor bactericidal at concentrations of up to 125 µM. Doses of 10 µM avasimibe were sufficient to reduce S. enterica abundance in RAW264.7 macrophage-like cells, and intraperitoneal injection of avasimibe significantly reduced C. rodentium survival in mice, regardless of whether the avasimibe was administered pre- or post-infection. We propose that avasimibe or related derivates created using synthetic chemistry may have utility in preventing or treating bacterial infections by inhibiting arginine glycosyltransferases that are important to virulence.

The obligate intra-erythrocytic protozoan parasite of the Plasmodium genus accounts for the manifestation of malaria, a life-threatening illness that is responsible for approximately 660,000 cases of worldwide annual mortality. In addition, resistance of the Plasmodium parasite to the conventionally used drug, artemisinin, contributes to 219 million of newly reported cases each year. Although, Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for the majority of the mortality cases of malaria, Plasmodium vivax is also known to contribute greatly towards the malaria related morbidities particularly in Asia and Latin America. In this study, we have used two different computational approaches aimed at establishing concepts for advanced therapeutics development against vivax malaria by targeting the surface antigen, merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1). Computational siRNA designing against MSP-1 resulted in a total of four non-immunogenic candidate siRNAs, out of which one siRNA candidate (siRNA 05) was found to exhibit a thermodynamically stable and feasible tertiary structure after being rationally validated following corroboration with a plethora of algorithms. Additionally, molecular docking analysis unraveled three anti-parasitic peptides named AP02283, AP02285 and AP00101 to exhibit considerable binding affinity with MSP-1, thus providing an apparent indication of their anti-malarial property. MD simulation reveals AP02283 as the best peptide candidate against MSP-1. However, irrespective of the prospective magnitude of these in-silico findings, the results require extensive validation by further rigorous laboratory experiments involving both in-vitro and in-vivo approaches.

Coastal areas in Bangladesh are at severe risk of inundation by sea-level rise (SLR). Effective adaptation plan requires information about extent and level of projected inundation, which is yet to be localized for Bangladeshi coasts. We used downscaled and bias-corrected temperatures from 28 global climate models to predict SLR around Bangladesh. Based on the extended semi-empirical approach to SLR modelling, this study shows that by 2100, temperature will increase by 1.7 °C (RCP4.5) to 4.4 °C (RCP8.5) relative to 1986–2005 (25.89 °C) and corresponding sea-level will rise by 0.77 m (RCP4.5) to 1.15 m (RCP8.5). The sensitivity of SLR to temperature over 1980–2100 is 2.13 to 3.75 mm/year/°C. Consequently, 2098 km2 of Bangladesh is likely to be inundated under 1 m SLR, affecting the coast and river-banks with potential for significant indirect effects, including increased soil and water salinity and underground water contamination. This study provides modelled projection of SLR and inundation for the 21st century, and thus, it should provide useful information for adaptation planning and SLR preparedness in Bangladesh. Wild aquatic birds are the primary natural reservoir for influenza A viruses (IAVs). In this study, an A(H9N9) influenza A virus (A/duck/Bangladesh/44493/2020) was identified via routine surveillance in free-range domestic ducks in Bangladesh. Phylogenetic analysis of hemagglutinin showed that the H9N9 virus belonged to the Y439-like lineage. The HA gene had the highest nucleotide identity to A/Bean Goose (Anser fabalis)/South Korea/KNU 2019-16/2019 (H9N2). The other seven gene segments clustered within the Eurasian lineage.

Whether type III secretion system (T3SS) effector proteins encoded by Gram-negative bacterial pathogens have intra-bacterial activities is an important and emerging area of investigation. Gram-negative bacteria interact with their mammalian hosts by using secretion systems to inject virulence proteins directly into infected host cells. Many of these injected protein effectors are enzymes that modify the structure and inhibit the function of mammalian proteins. The underlying dogma is that T3SS effectors are inactive until they are injected into host cells, where they then fold into their active conformations. We previously observed that the T3SS effectors NleB and SseK1 glycosylate Citrobacter rodentium and Salmonella enterica proteins, respectively, leading to enhanced resistance to environmental stress. Here, we sought to extend these studies to determine whether the T3SS effector protease NleC is also active within C. rodentium. To do this, we expressed the best-characterized mammalian substrate of NleC, the NF-κB p65 subunit in C. rodentium and monitored its proteolytic cleavage as a function of NleC activity. Intra-bacterial p65 cleavage was strictly dependent upon NleC. A p65 mutant lacking the known CE cleavage motif was resistant to NleC. Thus, we conclude that, in addition to NleB, NleC is also enzymatically active within C. rodentium.

Rhinolophus pusillus is a common species of India and Nepal in South Asia. Here, we report a new record of this bat captured in the mixed evergreen forest in Rangamati, southeastern part of Bangladesh. The identification was based on external morphology along with cranio-dental measurements. Roost counts was conducted through direct observation.

Paraquat (dipyridylium) is a highly toxic compound with a pungent smell. It is commonly used for weed killing. Intoxication occurs mainly by oral ingestion. After ingestion severe impairment of multiple organs develops. There is no specific antidote. Treatment includes repeated activated charcoal hemoperfusion with pulse methylprednisolone, cyclophosphamide, and antioxidants. Here we report a case of 15-year-old girl who presented with history of attempted suicide with paraquat. Patient died due to respiratory failure despite aggressive treatment and hemodialysis.

How the current distribution of tea cultivation is influenced by specific environmental conditions in Sri Lanka is yet to be explored. Therefore, this study aims to assess the differences between tea and non-tea growing areas with respect to climatic and topographic covariates, and to determine the major covariates that control tea distributions. Climatic data of temperature and rainfall were extracted from WorldClim-Global Climate Data; the elevation, slopes, and aspects were obtained from Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data; and the solar radiation data was computed using a clear-sky solar radiation model. Random points were created on rasterised environmental layers for tea-growing and non-tea growing areas, stratified into low, mid, and high regions, using ArcGIS version 10.4.1 (Environmental Systems Research Institute: ESRI Redlands, CA, USA).Correlations were derived between covariates and tea and non-tea growing areas. According to the logistic regression analysis, there was no significant influence of the south-west, west, and north-west aspect compared to the north aspect when all other covariates were held constant. The odds ratio indicated that an area with a one-unit higher solar radiation was 1.453 times more likely to be a tea growing area. Similarly, a per unit increase in slope increases the likelihood of an area being suitable for tea cultivation by 1.039 times. When the annual mean temperature increased, the suitability of tea cultivation decreased, but an increased rainfall had increased the suitability of an area for tea cultivation. Areas with a north facing slope had the highest suitability for tea cultivation. This research demonstrated that tea growing could be expanded into a variety of locations as long as these variables are either found or managed in order to obtain the critical levels. In addition, it is proposed that the results of this study could be utilised in the assessment of the climate or/and land suitability for tea.

Background Telehealth is comprised of telecommunications and electronic information systems to support and maintain long-distance healthcare services. Although it has not been thoroughly explored, the intention of using the service among the general public is critical to its success. We investigated the factors associated with the intention to utilize telehealth services among the general population of Bangladesh. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted between May 22, 2021 and June 15, 2021 in Bangladesh, where the total number of participants was 1038. The Pearson chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis H tests were used to examine the unadjusted relationship between the explanatory variables and the intention to use telehealth services. A multinomial logistic regression model was fitted to determine the adjusted association. Shapiro-Wilk tests were used to check the normality of continuous data. Data were processed and analyzed by software STATA-16. Results The probability of utilizing the service increased significantly with increasing knowledge, perceived benefit, and predisposition levels among respondents. However, when perceived concern increased, the likelihood of utilizing the service dropped significantly. Age, marital status, educational status, profession, residence, and perceived health status were significantly associated with the participants’ intention to utilize the telehealth service. Conclusions The influencing aspects of telehealth service utilization should be recognized by the respective authorities. Possible activities to enhance usability among people are also recommended.

BackgroundResident c-kit positive (c-kitpos) cardiac stem cells (CSCs) could be considered the most appropriate cell type for myocardial regeneration therapies. However, much is still unknown regarding their biological properties and potential.Methodology/principal findingsWe produced clones of high and low expressing GATA-4 CSCs from long-term bulk-cultured c-kitpos CSCs isolated from adult rat hearts. When c-kitpos GATA-4 high expressing clonal CSCs (cCSCs) were co-cultured with adult rat ventricular cardiomyocytes, we observed increased survival and contractility of the cardiomyocytes, compared to cardiomyocytes cultured alone, co-cultured with fibroblasts or c-kitpos GATA-4 low expressing cCSCs. When analysed by ELISA, the concentration of IGF-1 was significantly increased in the c-kitpos GATA-4 high cCSC/cardiomyocyte co-cultures and there was a significant correlation between IGF-1 concentration and cardiomyocyte survival. We showed the activation of the IGF-1 receptor and its downstream molecular targets in cardiomyocytes co-cultured with c-kitpos GATA-4 high cCSCs but not in cardiomyocytes that were cultured alone, co-cultured with fibroblasts or c-kitpos GATA-4 low cCSCs. Addition of a blocking antibody specific to the IGF-1 receptor inhibited the survival of cardiomyocytes and prevented the activation of its signalling in cardiomyocytes in the c-kitpos GATA-4 high cCSC/cardiomyocyte co-culture system. IGF-1 supplementation or IGF-1 high conditioned medium taken from the co-culture of c-kitpos GATA-4 high cCSCs plus cardiomyocytes did extend the survival and contractility of cardiomyocytes cultured alone and cardiomyocytes co-cultured with c-kitpos GATA-4 low cCSCs.Conclusion/significancec-kitpos GATA-4 high cCSCs exert a paracrine survival effect on cardiomyocytes through induction of the IGF-1R and signalling pathway.
