Abstract Background Opisthorchiid flukes, particularly Opisthorchis viverrini, Opisthorchis felineus, Clonorchis sinensis, and Metorchis spp. are the most common fish-borne zoonotic human liver flukes (hLFs). Liver fluke infections are more prevalent in resource-deprived and underprivileged areas. We herein estimated the prevalence of the metacercariae (MC) of major hLFs in common large freshwater fishes (lFWF) marketed for human consumption from some selected areas of Bangladesh along with detection of their molluscan vectors and reservoirs. Methods The current status of fish-borne zoonotic hLF infections in lFWF was investigated along with their molluscan vectors and mammalian reservoir hosts in Mymensingh and Kishoreganj in Bangladesh from July 2018–June 2022 using conventional and multiple molecular techniques, such as PCR, PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), sequencing, and bioinformatic analyses. The infection rate of fishes was analyzed using the Z-test and the loads of MC were compared using the chi-squared (χ 2) test. Results The MC of C. sinensis, Opisthorchis spp., and Metorchis spp. were detected in 11 species of common and popular lFWF. In lFWF, the estimated prevalence was 18.7% and the mean load was 137.4 ± 149.8 MC per 100 g of fish. The prevalence was the highest (P 0.05) distributed between the head and body of fishes. The infection rate was slightly higher in cultured (19.6%) fishes. The MC of C. sinensis, O. felineus, O. viverrini, and Metorchis orientalis in fishes were confirmed using PCR, PCR-RFLP and bioinformatics. The cercariae of opisthorchiid (Pleurolophocercus cercariae) flukes were only recovered from Bithynia spp. (3.9%, 42 out of 1089). The ova of hLFs from dogs (4.3%, 5 out of 116) and cats (6.0%, 6 out of 100), and adult flukes (M. orientalis) from ducks (41.1% 113 out of 275) were detected. Conclusions The MC of hLFs are highly prevalent in fresh water fishes in Bangladesh. Reservoir hosts, such as street dogs, cats, and ducks carried the patent infection, and residents of Bangladesh are at risk. Graphical Abstract

Abstract The objective of the present study was to describe a very rare case of gallstone (cholelithiasis) in a goat associated with chronic fasciolosis. During a routine slaughterhouse‐based survey, a two‐and‐half‐year‐old female Black Bengal Goat was found to be affected with severe chronic fascioliosis characterized by the massive damage in the liver. Through systemic dissection of liver, we isolated 94 adult Fasciola spp., and by PCR, we confirmed the fluke as Fasciola gigantica. The gallbladder of the goat was oedematous. On opening the gallbladder, we recovered 255 stones of variable sizes. Stones were whitish in colour and friable, and some of the fragile stones were attached to the wall of the gallbladder. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of the cholelithiasis in a goat associated with F. gigantica.

Abstract Natural fibers are one of the most attractive materials in biocomposites due to their potential for sustainability. This study aims to prepare sustainable composite materials using fibers from Sansevieria trifasciata (snake plant) and to investigate their mechanical, morphological, and water absorption properties. The composite was prepared with epoxy resin through a manual hand lay‐up process, maintaining standard parameters with changeable reinforcement (10%, 20%, and 30%). The mechanical properties (tensile, impact, and flexural strength), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and water absorbency of the composites were evaluated. The result showed that the tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance of the composites are 6.99 MPa, 10.77 MPa, and 14 J, respectively, for 30% fiber components, which are significantly higher than other composite materials. The SEM analysis showed a strong interfacial bond between the snake plant fiber and the epoxy resin. The FTIR analysis revealed a reduction in hemicellulose and lignin and an improvement in the interfacial adhesion between snake plant fiber and epoxy resin. The composites also demonstrated time‐dependent increases in water absorption, with the sample containing 30% fiber components showing the best absorbency performance at 0.88%. Highlights A study is being conducted on the effective and sustainable use of biowaste. The composite materials loaded with 30% fibers had significantly high tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance. The SEM analysis of snake plant fiber‐reinforced polymer composite showed a strong interfacial bond between fiber and epoxy resin. The FTIR analysis of the composite revealed the reduction of hemicellulose and lignin. The use of non‐renewable materials is reduced, and eco‐friendliness is promoted.

Synbiotic yogurts can offer several potential benefits due to the combination of yogurts probiotics, prebiotics, and the nutritional qualities of milk. Local yogurt variants might add to the variety of probiotic alternatives because they frequently have distinct microbial communities. Employing indigenous strains not only represents cultural preferences but also increases the probability of obtaining bacteria adapted to the surrounding environment. This study was intended to isolate and characterize potential lactic acid bacterial strains from local yogurt and assess the effectiveness of inulin on the physicochemical and microbiological properties during the fermentation of synbiotic yogurt. A total of eight strains were identified and isolated. Two chosen isolates were combined with inulin at 0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 % concentrations to produce synbiotic yogurts. The physicochemical and microbiological properties were assessed during the fermentation process of synbiotic yogurts. The result showed that the isolated Lactobacillus spp. and Streptococcus spp. strains had probiotic characteristics and good growth. After the fermentation, the yogurt sample containing 1.5 % inulin had the highest count of Lactobacillus spp. (8.17 ± 0.01 log CFU/ml) and Streptococcus spp. (8.03 ± 0.03 log CFU/ml), highest optical density (2.931 ± 0.001), acidity (1.43 ± 0.03), and water-holding capacity (63.54 ± 0.51), and lowest syneresis (34.75 ± 0.48). The addition of inulin did not affect color during the fermentation of synbiotic yogurt. This study concluded that inulin could boost yogurt's stability when combined with local lactic acid bacteria strains.

The study investigated the changes in chemical and fatty acid composition in selected edible oils due to continuous heating. Peroxide value of all the oil except rice bran oil went beyond the permissible limit of 10 mEqO2/kg after 90 min of heating. At first degree of heating, the saponification number of all the oils increased. But the values declined after second and third time of heating, indicating a high degree of saturation. Rice bran oil showed the most slower decreasing trend in case of iodine value. Acid value of all the oils increased with time of heating indicating the presence of free fatty acid. Fatty acid composition of all the oils seemed to be affected due to continuous heating when analyzed with GC–MS. Presence of essential fatty acids was affected and fully absent in some oil. Some foreign chemicals like glycidyl fatty acid esters, fumaric acid, succinic acid, cyclohexane, etc. were detected due to the heating of oils. Glycidyl fatty acid esters were discovered in the degradation of each oil. Cyclohexane is produced during the breakdown of palm and soybean oil. Conferring to the results, it is recommended that oils should not be used after the third degree of heating.

Pro-poor tourism (PPT) is revealed as a significant means of reducing poverty. However, inadequate awareness about the relationship between the poor local communities and the perceived benefits deriving from the tourism MSEs prevents the application of the PPT approach. Thus, using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this paper examines how tourism Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) benefit poor communities. In-depth interviews were conducted to collect data from 25 participants through semi-structured questionnaires and using NVivo12 software data was analyzed. The study found that the economic benefits focus on the standard of living, employment, tourism network and business expansion while social recognition and environmental awareness, which have a big impact on society, are marked as the novel outcomes which trigger the local communities for being engaged in tourism MSEs as non-economic benefits. This study could help the policymakers of developing countries to eradicate poverty and achieve Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2 (Zero Poverty and No Hunger).

Summary: Background and Aims: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and their complexity, intimately linked to diet, are substantial public health issues. Hepatic enzymes are liver function parameters, also referred to as hepatic objects, and are groups of blood tests that provide information about the state of a patient's liver. To investigate the potential effects of a plant-based high-fiber enrich diet on improving hepatic enzymes in growing rat models to prevent and manage CVD. The current investigation developed a fiber-enriched diet and compared it with control, high-fat, and other formulated diets on rat models. Methods: About 36 Long Evan rats were fed with two experimental phases for 12 weeks (each phase lasting six weeks). After each phase, half of the rats were sacrificed for serum collection to measure biochemical parameters and statistical analysis. ABSTRACT: Ascaridia galli is the most common nematode in chickens. Ascaridia galli is highly prevalent in chickens reared in scavenging or semiscavenging systems. Here, we studied the epidemiology, pathology, genetic diversity, ex vivo culture protocol and anthelmintic sensitivity of A. galli prevalent in indigenous chickens in Bangladesh. Through morphological study and molecular analyses, the isolated worms were confirmed as A. galli. Of the chickens examined, 45.6% (178 out of 390) were found infected. The male and young chickens were significantly (P < 0.05) more prone to A. galli infection. Prevalence of the infection was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the summer season. In heavy infections, A. galli blocked the small intestine. Marked inflammation, increased mucus production and petechial hemorrhages were evident in the small intestine, particularly in the duodenum. Also, there were desquamation and adhesion of the mucosal villi; degeneration, necrosis of the epithelial cells and goblet cell hyperplasia. The mucosal layer was infiltrated mainly with eosinophils and heterophils. We developed a hen egg white-based long-term ex vivo culture protocol which supported the survival and reproduction of A. galli for more than a week. Levamisole (LEV) and ivermectin (IVM) efficiently killed A. galli. However, albendazole (ABZ), mebendazole (MBZ), and piperazine (PPZ) did not kill the worms even at 120 μg/mL and 1mg/mL concentrations, respectively. Taken together, our results suggest that A. galli is highly prevalent in semiscavenging chickens in Bangladesh. Ascaridia galli can be easily maintained ex vivo in egg white supplemented M199 medium. LEV and IVM, but not ABZ, MBZ and PPZ, can be used for treating and controlling A. galli infections in chickens.

In this study, we describe and successfully solve a jet engine vibration equation using a straightforward tool known as the He's frequency-amplitude Method (HFAM). The jet engine vibration system demonstrates diverse applications across aerospace, power generation, industrial machinery, transportation, marine propulsion, energy optimization, defense, and aviation training. Utilizing HFAM, we derive periodic solutions in a general form for this system, considering various cases dependent on damping and driving forces. The obtained results highlight the effectiveness of HFAM as a distinct and straightforward technique for nonlinear equations. By comparing the solutions with numerical results obtained using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method, we demonstrate the excellent accuracy of our solutions.

The study investigated the impact of freeze drying (FD), cabinet drying (CD), and sun drying (SD) on the proximate composition, phytochemicals, and antioxidant activity of roselle calyx. The proximate composition, phytochemicals, and antioxidant activity of the roselle calyx were determined by the AOAC method and the free radical-scavenging DPPH technique, followed by the spectrophotometric method, respectively. The present study has been carried out to optimize the cabinet drying conditions using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for drying moringa leaves. Moringa leaves were dried by a cabinet dryer using different drying temperatures 40–70 °C and air velocity 1.3–1.65 m/s. A central composite design was applied to optimize the drying conditions. The combined effect of these variables on the responses (moisture content, L*, a*/b* value, and vitamin C) was investigated. The findings show that the generated regression models effectively captured the real link between the independent variables and the outcomes as well as sufficiently described the variation in the data. The moisture content, L* value, a*/b* value, and vitamin C content of dried moringa leaves were 3.76–8.30%, 42.17-45.39, −0.498 to −0.581, 10.50–19.57 mg/100g, respectively. The study found that the maximum vitamin C content was 19.57 mg/100g at 33.7 °C and 1.45 m/s air velocity. On the other hand, minimum moisture content was found 3.76% at 76.2 °C and 1.45 m/s air velocity. The optimum conditions for maximization of vitamin C and minimization of moisture content were the drying temperature and air velocity of 40 °C and 1.45 m/s, respectively. Moisture content, L*, a*/b*, and vitamin C content at optimum conditions were 6.282%, 44.282, −0.536, 17.711 mg/100g, respectively. Therefore, the current study suggests that the derived model is suitable for the enhanced retention of color ratio, lightness, and vitamin C content with a longer shelf life, which can afterward be practical in large-scale production in the food industry.

This paper proposes a MAC protocol for ad hoc networks using In-band Full-duplex (IBFD) wireless communications, which are named as AdHoc-FDMAC. To utilize IBFD communications in ad hoc networks, this protocol modifies a number of control frames in the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC standard. Here, the detailed time sequences for all types of IBFD communications are shown for the data transmission and routing. In this paper, the probability and throughput equations for IBFD communications in different situations have been derived. The performance of the proposed AdHoc-FDMAC has been analysed in terms of probability, throughput, and routing time. The Maximum throughput of AdHoc-FDMAC has been found to be 48.34 Mbps, and it is compared with a recently published ad hoc MAC as well as with the conventional HD MAC. The AdHoc-FDMAC outperforms the recently published ad hoc MAC and conventional HD MAC by 16.80% and 66.50% throughput gain, respectively. AdHoc-FDMAC incorporates the existing Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, but this AODV routing is utilized here using IBFD communications. This paper also compares the routing time of the IBFD-based AODV with the conventional AODV. The result shows that the IBFD-based AODV requires 33.33% less routing time than that of the conventional AODV for 3-hop distance between the transmitter and receiver. This paper suggests that the AdHoc-FDMAC protocol provides much more throughput in ad hoc networks by utilizing IBFD communications.

Abstract Background Ascaridia galli is the largest gut‐dwelling helminth of chickens, which confers adverse effects on meat and egg production; thus, on the animal protein supply and the economy. Both adult and immature parasites affect gut health, but larval stages play a major role in pathology. Aims Here, we present immunology and pathology of A. galli in chickens. Materials and Methods Literatures were surveyed through online platforms such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Researchgate. Results The larvae cause excessive mucus production, damage to the intestinal gland, hemorrhage, anemia, diarrhea, and malnutrition. The adult worms can cause death by intestinal obstruction and intussusception. Although both cellular and humoral immunity are involved in fighting against ascariasis, the role of naturally acquired immunity is poorly defined. In cellular immunity, Th‐2 cytokines (IL‐4, IL‐5, IL‐9, and IL‐13), goblet cells (mucin), gut‐associated lymphoid tissues, CD8α+ intraepithelial cells, TCRγδ + T cells, and TGF‐β4 form a protective band. Type 2 immunity provides protection by forming a network of endogenous damage‐associated molecular patterns, chitin, and parasitic antigens. Among antibodies, IgY is the most prominent in chickens and provides temporary humoral protection. During parasitic infection, infiltration of various immune cells is evident, especially in the intestinal epithelium, lamina propria, and crypts of the duodenum and jejunum. In chickens older than 12 weeks, gradual reduction of worm burden is more successful than the younger birds. Female chickens exert a short‐lived but higher level of protection by passing IgY to chicks in the form of egg yolk antibodies. In laying conditions, immunity differs between breeds. This review provides an overview of the silent but inevitable pathological changes induced by A. galli and the interaction of host immunity with the parasite.

Riptortus pedestris (Fab.) (Hemiptera, Alydidae) is one of the most damaging insects of leguminous crops in Eastern Asia but has only recently emerged as a pest in Bangladesh. Eggs, nymphs and adults of R. pedestris are here reported from mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.)) fields in Bangladesh. Two parasitoid species were reared from field-collected eggs of R. pedestris, the solitary Hadronotus pubescens (Motschoulsky) (Hymenoptera, Scelionidae) and a gregarious species of Ooencyrtus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Encyrtidae). Here we redescribe H. pubescens, treat H. hogenakalensis (Sharma) as a junior synonym, and report aspects of its biology that were investigated under laboratory conditions. The number of eggs parasitized by H. pubescens was constant with eggs up to 48 hours in age, decreasing by 14% for 96 hour-old eggs. As host egg age increased, the parasitoid mean development time increased and the longevity of the parasitoids decreased.

This paper presents a novel approach for man-made object extraction in remote sensing images. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a system that allows a user to extract multiple objects such as buildings or roads from an input image without much user intervention. The framework includes five main stages: 1) Pre-processing Stage. 2) Extraction of Local energy features using edge information and Gabor filter followed by down sampling to reduce the redundant information. 3) Further reduction of the size of feature vectors using Wavelet decomposition. 4) Classification and recognition of man-made structures using Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) 5) NDVI based post-classification refinement. Experiments are conducted on a dataset of 200 RS images. The proposed framework yields overall accuracy of 93%. Experimental results validate the effective performance of the suggested technique for extracting man-made objects from RS images. Compared with other methods; the proposed framework exhibits significantly improved accuracy results and computationally much more efficient. Most notably, it has a much smaller input size, which makes it more feasible in practical applications.

The article describes the challenges and success factors of implementing sustainability in the Bangladeshi textile industry. The main purpose was to identify the barriers and change them to success to maintain a satisfactory and pleasant environment in the industry. Implementing and ensuring sustainability in the Bangladeshi textile industry is a priority. The barriers and success factors of sustainability in Bangladeshi textile industry through a survey based was evaluated. The survey was carried out through questionnaires of managers in the Bangladeshi textile industry. The test was carried out at the producer level of the industry based on the three pillars of sustainability (social, economic, and environmental). The 5-point Likert scale was used to receive the responses. We surveyed a total of 26 people from 7 different factories. SPSS software was used to analyse the surveyed data and quantify the barriers and success factors of sustainability. Data were statistically analysed using reliability tests, multiple regression analysis, ANOVA, coefficients, regression equation development, and Pearson's correlation. The analysis illustrated the socio-environmental aspect as the most important predictor, while the environmental-economic and economic-social aspects were the least important to the managers of the Bangladeshi textile industry. The performance of any industry depends on the management and their way of handling situations. Our research goal was to find out the challenges that the management faces and what could be possible solutions for these challenges. The article shows the ways of finding out the existing barriers to sustainability by conducting a survey of the textile industry and the possible solutions to these barriers to ensure a better work environment. The article also shows how to keep the industry performance updated, improved, and satisfactory. The report would be beneficial to the Bangladesh textile industry administration to identify industry barriers to implementing sustainability and changing it to success.

Jute is a bio-degradable, agro-renewable, and widely available lingo cellulosic fiber having high tensile strength and initial modulus, moisture regain, good sound, and heat insulation properties. For these unique properties and eco-friendly nature of jute fibers, jute-based products are now widely used in many sectors such as packaging, home textiles, agro textiles, build textiles, and so forth. The diversified applications of jute products create an excellent opportunity to mitigate the negative environmental effect of petroleum-based products. For producing the best quality jute products, the main prerequisite is to ensure the jute yarn quality that can be defined by the load at break (L.B), strain at break (S.B), tenacity at break (T.B), and tensile modulus (T.M). However, good quality yarn production by considering these parameters is quite difficult because these parameters follow a non-linear relationship. Therefore, it is essential to build up a model that can cover this entire inconsistent pattern and forecast the yarn quality accurately. That is why, in this study, a laboratory-based research work was performed to develop a fuzzy model to predict the quality of jute yarn considering L.B, S.B, T.B, and T.M as input parameters. For this purpose, 173 tex (5 lb/spindle) and 241 tex (7 lb/spindle) were produced, and then L.B, S.B, T.B and T.M values were measured. Using this measured value, a fuzzy model was developed to determine the optimum L.B, S.B, T.B, and T.M to produce the best quality jute yarn. In our proposed fuzzy model, for 173 tex and 241 tex yarn count, the mean relative error was found to be 1.46% (Triangular membership) and 1.48% (Gaussian membership), respectively, and the correlation coefficient was 0.93 for both triangular and gaussian membership function. This result validated the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy model for an industrial application. The developed fuzzy model may help a spinner to produce the best quality jute yarn.

Population diffusion in river-ocean ecologies and for wild animals, including birds, mainly depends on the availability of resources and habitats. This study explores the dynamics of the resource-based competition model for two interacting species in order to investigate the spatiotemporal effects in a spatially distributed heterogeneous environment with no-flux boundary conditions. The main focus of this study is on the diffusion strategy, under conditions where the carrying capacity for two competing species is considered to be unequal. The same growth function is associated with both species, but they have different migration coefficients. The stability of global coexistence and quasi-trivial equilibria are also studied under different conditions with respect to resource function and carrying capacity. Furthermore, we investigate the case of competitive exclusion for various linear combinations of resource function and carrying capacity. Additionally, we extend the study to the instance where a higher migration rate negatively impacts population growth in competition. A prosthesis is an artificial device that substitutes a missing body component as a result of injury, disease, or congenital flaws. Prostheses are designed to help amputees to reclaim their usual activities. The human leg is a complicated bodily part that is required for daily mobility and activity. The World Health Organization (WHO) claims that, around 1,000,000 amputees in Bangladesh need prostheses to perform daily functions like walking, climbing stairs and working. When they try to reintegrate into society after their tragic loss, they confront emotional trauma in addition to their physical anguish. Their financial situation puts them in a precarious position, preventing them from having any economic contributions to their family. They may have feelings of loss of self, social stigma, coping difficulties, and despair if they do not have a prosthesis. Even though prostheses are in use in rehabilitation sectors in Bangladesh, they are expensive and mostly import-oriented, and thus remain out of reach for the general people. This research aims to address this issue by developing a fully mechanical trans-femoral prosthetic leg that is accessible to low-income people, allowing them to participate in their regular work. The transfemoral prosthetic leg has various unique features, including the ability to absorb shock like a knee joint, a mechanical knee joint that may allow flexion and extension, and a light total weight. The trans-femoral prosthetic leg was developed using all the local (Bangladeshi) resources/materials and was tested to be preliminarily functional while cost-effective. However, a proper clinical trial is needed to make it commercially available, which is under preparation.

The influence of slip parameter, viscous dissipation, and Joule heating parameter on MHD boundary layer nanofluid flow over a permeable wedge-shaped surface was analysed. The PDEs and the associated boundary conditions were transformed to a set of non-similar ODEs and the obtained system of equations was solved numerically with the help of the spectral quasi-linearization method (SQLM) by applying suitable software. This method helps to identify the accuracy and convergence of the present problem. The current numerical results were compared with previously published work and are found to be similar. The fluid velocity, fluid temperature, and nanoparticle concentration within the boundary layer region for various values of the parameters such as the slip effect, magnetic strength, Prandtl number, Lewis number, stretching ratio, viscous dissipation, suction, Brownian motion, Joule heating, heat generation, and thermophoresis are studied. It is observed that the Brownian motion, Joule heating, viscous dissipation, and thermophoresis lead to decreases in the heat and mass transfer rate. The skin friction coefficient enhances with slip, magnetic, permeability, and suction parameters, but reduces with the Brownian motion, wedge angle, and stretching ratio parameters whereas there is no effect of mixed convection, thermophoresis, heat generation parameters, the Prandtl and Eckert number.

A numerical investigation is carried out to analyze the impacts of internal heat source size, solid concentration of nanoparticles, magnetic field, and Richardson number on flow characteristics in an oppositely directed lid-driven wavy-shaped enclosure. The left and right vertical walls of the enclosure are cooled isothermally and moving with fixed velocity in upward and downward directions, respectively. The bottom wall is wavy shaped and isothermally cooled as the vertical walls while the top wall is kept adiabatic. A rectangular heater is placed horizontally in the center of the cavity. The physical problems are characterized by 2D governing partial differential equations accompanying proper boundary conditions and are discretized using Galerkin’s finite element formulation. The study is executed by analyzing different ranges of geometrical and physical parameters, namely, internal heat source length 0.2≤CH≤0.6, solid concentration of nanoparticles 0≤φ≤0.09, Hartmann’s number 0≤Ha≤70, and Richardson’s number 0.1≤Ri≤10. The results indicate that the overall heat transfer rate declines with the increasing length of internal heat source. The presence and rising values of solid concentration of nanoparticles cause the augmentation of heat transfer whereas the magnetic field has a negative influence and the Richardson number has a positive influence on heat transfer.

The effects of various drying methods (spray drying, cabinet drying, vacuum drying, tunnel drying, rotary oven drying, and gas oven drying) on the phenolic profile, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant capacity of mango powder have been considered with the aim of discover the effective drying technique. In this study, mixed convection in a nanofluid filled cavity induced by thermal buoyancy force, moving wall and rotating flat plate subjected to external magnetic field is numerically investigated. The cavity is partially heated from its bottom wall and cooled from top wall moving with constant velocity in ±x direction and other walls are kept adiabatic. A counter-clockwise rotating flat plate is placed at the centre of the cavity. The cavity is permeated by a transverse magnetic field. Conservation equations are simulated through implementing finite element method. Numerical results are presented using streamlines, isotherms and bar charts to explore the effects of physical parameters on the flow and temperature fields. It is found that flow and thermal fields are impressively affected with the variations in length and speed of rotating flat plate. Besides, higher length and rotational speed of the plate causes maximum amount of heat transfer. Best heat transfer is ensured while the direction of rotating plate is same as the direction of lid wall. Moreover, optimal heat transfer performance is obtained up to 5% nanoparticles concentration which is 123.02% more than base fluid. Higher magnetic field strength attenuates the fluid motion and hence heat transfer rate significantly.

Automatic extraction of buildings from High-Resolution Remote Sensing (RS) Imagery is of great practical interest for numerous applications; including urban planning, change detection, disaster management, estimation of human population, and many other geospatial related applications. This paper proposes a novel efficient Improved ResU-Net architecture called IRU-Net, integrating spatial pyramid pooling module with an encoder-decoder structure, in combination with Atrous convolutions, modified residual connections, and a new skip connection between the encoder-decoder features for automatic extraction of buildings from RS images. Moreover, a new dual loss function called binary cross-entropy-dice-loss (BCEDL) is opted that make cross-entropy (CE) and dice loss (DL) and consider both local information and global information to decrease the class imbalance influence and improve the building extraction results. The proposed model is examined to demonstrate its generalization on two publicly available datasets; the Aerial Images for Roof Segmentation (AIRS) Dataset and the Massachusetts buildings dataset. The proposed IRU-Net achieved an average F-1 accuracy of 92.34% for the Massachusetts dataset and 95.65% for the AIRS dataset. When compared to other state-of-the-art deep learning-based models such as SegNet, U-Net, E-Net, ERFNet and SRI-Net, the overall accuracy improvements of our IRU-Net model is 9.0% (0.9725 vs. 0.8842), 5.2% (0.9725 vs. 0.9218), 3.0% (0.9725 vs. 0.9428), 1.4% (0.9725 vs. 0.9588) and 0.93% (0.9725 vs. 0.9635), for AIRS dataset and 11.6%, 5.9%, 3.1%, 2.7% and 1.4%, for Massachusetts building dataset. These results prove the superiority of the proposed model for building extraction from high-resolution RS images.

Rural tourist destinations are a growing segment of global tourism. The rural communities in these destinations play a major role in delivering tourist services, attractions, and accommodation. Any tourism development, therefore, requires host community support if it is to attain long term success. The proposed study aims to investigate tourism development through communities’ support in the context of rural communities’ perspectives. The Social Exchange Theory was employed to develop the conceptual framework for this study. A total of 266 residents from sampled households at rural communities in a developing country were surveyed. The study employed the Partial Least-Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) analysis. The findings of this study revealed that the community’s participation in the decision-making of tourism matters has a significant influence on residents’ support for tourism development. Tourism stakeholders as well as rural host communities will benefit from these findings which will outline how community’s participation in tourism decision-making influence them to be supportive for tourism development. This study analyses the direct effect of host communities’ perceived positive and negative impacts of tourism, participation in tourism decision making towards support for tourism development, and perceived positive impacts towards community participation. A quantitative survey method was carried out to collect data for testing the significance of the proposed relationships in the conceptual framework of the study. The study recruited rural host communities at the Dhangmari village located in the district of Khulna in Bangladesh. Host communities’ perceived positive and negative impacts of tourism can influence them to support for tourism development in rural communities. Notably, community participation in tourism decision-making process has a greater role to enhance host communities’ support towards tourism development in rural communities as it assists to alleviate their confusion and conflict on such a development, particularly, in developing countries. This study further explored an indirect effect of community participation in tourism decision making between host communities’ positive impacts of tourism and support for tourism development. Thus, local authorities should provide more opportunities for host communities to be involved both in tourism operations and decision-making process

Population movements are necessary to survive the individuals in many cases and depend on available resources, good habitat, global warming, climate change, supporting the environment, and many other issues. This study explores the spatiotemporal effect on the dynamics of the reaction-diffusion model for two interacting populations in a heterogeneous habitat. Both species are assumed to compete for different fundamental resources, and the diffusion strategies of both organisms follow the resource-based diffusion toward a positive distribution function for a large variety of growth functions. Depending on the values of spatially distributed interspecific competition coefficients, the study is conducted for two cases: weak competition and strong competition, which do not perform earlier in the existing literature. The stability of global attractors is studied for different conditions of resource function and carrying capacity. We investigated that in the case of weak competition, coexistence is attainable, while strong competition leads to competitive exclusion. This is an emphasis on how resource-based diffusion in the niche impacts selection. When natural resources are in sharing, either competition or predator-prey interaction leads to competitive exclusion or coexistence of competing species. However, we concentrate on the situation in which the ideal free pair is achieved without imposing any other additional conditions on the model's parameters. The effectiveness of the model is accomplished by numerical computation for both one and two space dimension cases, which is very important for biological consideration.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a type of brain tumor that is most aggressive, proliferates rapidly and intensive invasion is governed by cell migration and destruction of the extracellular matrix. In the present study, we evaluated the antiproliferative efficacy of the synthesized silver chloride nanoparticles (AgCl-NPs) from Asparagus racemosus root extract against human glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells. Biosynthesis of A. racemosus-AgCl-NPs was confirmed by color change, UV–visible spectroscopy and characterized by transmitted electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The A. racemosus-AgCl-NPs inhibited GSCs and EAC cells growth with the IC50 values of 4.8 and 4.69 µg/ml, respectively. A. racemosus-AgCl-NPs induced apoptosis in GSCs which was confirmed by annexin V/PI assay, various genes expression, and caspase-3 protein expression as detected by the immunofluorometric assay. The expression level of the TLR9, NFκB, TNFα, p21 and IKK genes were increased consequently with the decrease of PARP, EGFR, NOTCH2, mTOR and STAT3 genes in GSCs as examined by real-time PCR. The cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase was detected by flow cytometry. In addition, A. racemosus-AgCl-NPs caused significant inhibition of EAC cells growth, reduced tumor burden, increased the survival of EAC-bearing mice and restored the hematological parameters when compared with the control mice. The synthesized AgCl-NPs inhibited the proliferation of GSCs in vitro with the induction of apoptosis and inhibited the growth of EAC cells in vivo in mice by reducing the tumor burden and increasing the survival periods.

This work investigated the effect of superheated steam (SHS) jute fiber and poly (lactic acid) (PLA) having a weight proportion of 30:70 which were synthesized using the melt blending method. The goal of this treatment was to boost up the fiber-polymer interfacial linkage. The action was conducted in a superheated steam oven at various times (30–120 min) and temperatures (170–220 °C). The biocomposites were assessed in terms of mechanical characteristics, dimensional stability and morphological properties. Compared to different treatment temperatures, the results showed that treatment at 210 °C for 60 min offered the best tensile characteristics. Because of the presence of SHS-Jute, the tensile, impact, bending and dimensional stability of the bio-composites have been improved. The FTIR and SEM study revealed progress in the interfacial linkage between SHS-Jute and PLA. This interfacial link improves the bending strength of SHS-Jute-PLA biocomposites by about 15.64%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation also showed an elevation in the crystalline structure with the incorporation of SHS-Jute. The degradation tests of the biocomposite were carried out in deionized water. SHS treatment reduces hemicellulose contents in jute fiber which causes water uptake% reduction is 54% in SHS-Jute-PLA. The SHS-Jute-PLA biocomposite appeared with promising characteristics for utilization as a green and ecological substitute particle board material.

ABSTRACT: Echinostomes (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) are food-borne zoonotic flatworms that affect birds, animals and humans, and has been classified as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by the World Health Organization (WHO), which cause severe enteritis in poultry and hamper production. Here, we confirmed the species of echinostomes affecting chickens in Bangladesh along with their genetic analyses, pathology and vectors. We isolated and identified adult worms from chickens, cercariae from fresh water snails and metacerariae (MC) from some wild fishes. We recovered Echinostoma revolutum (10.3%) and Hypoderaeum conoideum (6.0%) from chickens. Zoonotic E. revolutum was confirmed by amplifying nad1 gene and subsequent sequencing. Several mutations were detected in nad1 gene and our isolates belonged to the Euro-Asian clade. We observed thickening of mucosal layer, hyperplasia of goblet cells, infiltration of eosinophils, lymphocytes and must cells in the infected intestine. About 5.3% snails were infected and the highest percentage of infection was found in Lymnaea luteola (12.1%). Echinostome infection in snails was the highest in November (9.6%) and lowest in February (3.1%) in Bangladesh. MC of echinostomes were identified from blue panchax (Aplocheilus panchax) and tank goby (Glossogobius giuris). In conclusion, echinostomiasis is a notable big problem in indigenous chickens in Bangladesh and people, especially, villagers are at risk.

Anthocyanins, a major natural food colorant rich in mango powder, need considerable protection during processing and storage for better retention due to colour instability. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the stability of the anthocyanin’s extracts obtained from cabinet dried mango powder under different factors which could disrupted the anthocyanin pigments during processing. The factors are processing temperature and time (30°C, 60°C and 80°C for 10, 20 and 30 minutes each, respectively), storage conditions (room temperature, refrigerator temperature and freezing temperature), pH (2, 3, 4, 7 and 10), oxygen, influence of light, different extraction solvent (methanol, absolute ethanol, acidified ethanol (1%), and 50% KMS -Ethanol), sugar level (20%, 40%, and 60%). The intensity of the extracted colour was measured at wavelength 520 nm using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The results can elucidate the increasing heating temperature and time, sugar content, and exposure to light is able to spoil the anthocyanin molecule. There was a proportional effect of pH and oxygen. The anthocyanin stability was found better in pH=10, acidified ethanol (1%) as extracting solvents, absence of light as processing condition and refrigeration temperature as storage temperature. Hence, these findings could be useful in the food industry to choose a proper processing condition for development of mango powders-based products for satisfying the consumer perception by retaining anthocyanin pigment.

This study aimed to determine the effects of different drying methods on the physicochemical properties of mango powders (Amropali cultivar) and its reconstituted products. Six types of drying methods were employed, which were spray drying (SD), cabinet drying (CD), vacuum drying (VD), tunnel drying (TD), rotary oven drying (RoD) and gas oven drying (GoD). For drying temperature was maintained around 60 to 70°C for all dryers except for SD for which temperature was kept at 150°C. It was found that drying methods affected the physicochemical properties of mango powders (Amropali cultivar) and its reconstituted products. SD and CD powders showed better physicochemical properties (water activity, rehydration, solubility, and porosity) than other mango powder samples. In addition, mango powder produced through SD and CD methods showed lighter color, whereas mango powder prepared using other drying methods showed yellowish, dull, and dark colors. However, reconstituted products of SD and CD powders gave almost similar physicochemical properties compared to other dried samples. The present study concludes that SD powder and CD powder are more preferable in terms of producing high-quality products compared to other drying techniques.

Antimicrobials have been used to improve animal welfare, food security, and food safety that promote the emergence, selection, and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria. In this study, 50 E. coli were isolated from frozen chicken meat samples in Dhaka city. Antibiotic sensitivity patterns were assessed through the disk diffusion method and finally screened for the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG) using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Among the 160 samples, the prevalence of E. coli was observed in fifty samples (31.25%). All of these isolates were found resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, and 52.0% of the isolates were resistant against 4–7 different antimicrobials. High resistance was shown to tetracycline (66.0%), followed by resistance to erythromycin (42.0%), ampicillin and streptomycin (38.0%), and sulfonamide (28.0%). In addition, the most prevalent ARGs were tet(A) (66.0%), ereA (64.0%), tet(B) (60.0%), aadA1 and sulI (56.0%), blaCITM (48.0%) and blaSHV (40.0%). About 90.0% of isolates were multidrug resistant. This study reveals for the first time the current situation of E. coli AMR in broilers, which is helpful for the clinical control of disease as well as for the development of policies and guidelines to reduce AMR in broilers production in Bangladesh.

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose threats to animal and human health. Outbreaks from the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) in indigenous chickens in Bangladesh are infrequent. This could be attributed to the Myxovirus resistance (Mx) gene. To determine the impact of Mx gene diversity on AIV infections in chicken, we assessed the Mx genes, AIVs, and anti-AIV antibodies. DNA from blood cells, serum, and cloacal swab samples was isolated from non-vaccinated indigenous chickens and vaccinated commercial chickens. Possible relationships were assessed using the general linear model (GLM) procedure. Three genotypes of the Mx gene were detected (the resistant AA type, the sensitive GG type, and the heterozygous AG type). The AA genotype (0.48) was more prevalent than the GG (0.19) and the AG (0.33) genotypes. The AA genotype was more prevalent in indigenous than in commercial chickens. A total of 17 hemagglutinating viruses were isolated from the 512 swab samples. AIVs were detected in two samples (2/512; 0.39%) and subtyped as H1N1, whereas Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was detected in the remaining samples. The viral infections did not lead to apparent symptoms. Anti-AIV antibodies were detected in 44.92% of the samples with levels ranging from 27.37% to 67.65% in indigenous chickens and from 26% to 87.5% in commercial chickens. The anti-AIV antibody was detected in 40.16%, 65.98%, and 39.77% of chickens with resistant, sensitive, and heterozygous genotypes, respectively. The genotypes showed significant association (p < 0.001) with the anti-AIV antibodies. The low AIV isolation rates and high antibody prevalence rates could indicate seroconversion resulting from exposure to the virus as it circulates. Results indicate that the resistant genotype of the Mx gene might not offer anti-AIV protection for chickens.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by blood flukes (Schistosoma spp.). Schistosomatids affect a wide array of vertebrate hosts, including humans. In the present study, multiple species of schistosomatids were identified by isolating schistosomatid cercariae (SC) from naturally infected snails. We also described different biotic and abiotic factors influencing SC infections in snails and reported human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) for the first time in Bangladesh. A total of 22,012 snails of seven species: Lymnaea auricularia, L. luteola, Indoplanorbis exustus, Physa acuta, Viviparus bengalensis, Brotia spp., and Thiara spp., were collected and examined. Among these snails, 581 (2.6%) belonging to five species: L. luteola, L. auricularia, P. acuta, I. exustus, and V. bengalensis, were infected with SC. The rate of infection was the highest for L. luteola (11.1%), followed by L. auricularia (5.3%), and was the lowest for V. bengalensis (0.4%). Prevalence in snails was the highest in September (16.8%), followed by October (9.5%) and November (8.8%), and was the lowest in colder months, such as January (1.8%) and February (2.1%). Infections with schistosomatids were more common in larger snails and snails collected from sunny areas. We confirmed the presence of Schistosoma indicum, S. incognitum, S. nasale, S. spindale, and Trichobilharzia szidati by PCR and sequencing. Through a questionnaire survey, we detected HCD in 214 (53.5%) individuals, and the infection rate was almost equally distributed across all professions. Collectively, the present results suggest that lymnaeid snails are the main vector for Schistosoma spp. prevalent in Bangladesh, and schistosomatids with zoonotic potential are also prevalent.

The present research was developed to find out the effect of heated cylinder configurations in accordance with the magnetic field on the natural convective flow within a square cavity. In the cavity, four types of configurations—left bottom heated cylinder (LBC), right bottom heated cylinder (RBC), left top heated cylinder (LTC) and right top heated cylinder (RTC)—were considered in the investigation. The current mathematical problem was formulated using the non-linear governing equations and then solved by engaging the process of Galerkin weighted residuals based on the finite element scheme (FES). The investigation of the present problem was conducted using numerous parameters: the Rayleigh number (Ra = 103–105), the Hartmann number (Ha = 0–200) at Pr = 0.71 on the flow field, thermal pattern and the variation of heat inside the enclosure. The clarifications of the numerical result were exhibited in the form of streamlines, isotherms, velocity profiles and temperature profiles, local and mean Nusselt number, along with heated cylinder configurations. From the obtained outcomes, it was observed that the rate of heat transport, as well as the local Nusselt number, decreased for the LBC and LTC configurations, but increased for the RBC and RTC configurations with the increase of the Hartmann number within the square cavity. In addition, the mean Nusselt number for the LBC, RBC, LTC and RTC configurations increased when the Hartmann number was absent, but decreased when the Hartmann number increased in the cavity. The computational results were verified in relation to a published work and were found to be in good agreement.

The study was designed to observe the behavior of mechanical and osmotic dehydration of pineapple, retention of vitamin C content during drying and development of jam from fresh and dehydrated pineapple. Osmotic dehydration carried out with pineapples collected from local market of Mymensingh in July 2015 and found that pineapples contained higher moisture content (93.9%,wb) than normal (85-87%,wb) and showed contradictory osmotic behavior due to higher moisture content and hormonal effect. Then the studies were conducted using pineapples of Gaint Kew variety collected from Madhupur without hormone treatment which contained 86.11% moisture, 0.36% ash, 13.89% total solid, 0.54% protein and 17.38mg/100g vitamin C. The osmotic concentration behavior was investigated using sugar and combined sugar-salt solution for 6mm thick pineapple slices and immersion time was 6 hrs. The extent of water loss, solid gain and normalized solid content were strongly influenced by strength of osmotic solution. It was found that K-value (mass transfer coefficient) increases with increasing concentration and was the highest (0.15min-1) for 55/5% sugar/salt solution and lowest (0.07min-1) for 45% sugar solution. Three different temperatures (55, 60 and 65°C) and thicknesses (4, 6 and 8mm) were used to investigate the drying behavior of pineapple slices in a mechanical dryer. Activation energy value of 8.14 Kcal/g-mole was found for fresh pineapple slices. 55/5% sugar/salt osmosed and dried pineapple gave 5.46 times higher dryer throughput compared to nonosmosed dried pineapple. Degradation of vitamin C content of pineapple at different air-dry bulb temperatures (55, 60 and 65°C) of 6mm thickness was investigated and activation energy for degradation of vitamin C was found to be 14.38 Kcal/g-mole. Osmotic dehydration prior to air drying, gave the lower rate of degradation of vitamin C during drying compared to that dried without osmosis. Developed jams were tested for their acceptability by sensory evaluation using 1-9 point hedonic scale and jam made from osmotically dehydrated (55/5% sugar-salt and then dried at 60°C) secured highest score (8.5) and ranked as like very much, while the other products were ranked as like moderately. Current evidence indicates that more than half of all antimicrobials are used in the animal food-producing sector, which is considered a significant risk factor for the development, spread, and existence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pathogens in animals, humans, and the environment. Among other factors, clinical etiology and the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of veterinarians are thought to be responsible for inappropriate prescriptions in the animal-source protein production sector in lower-resource settings like Bangladesh. We performed this cross-sectional study to assess factors associated with veterinarians’ antimicrobial prescription behavior and their KAP on antimicrobial use (AMU) and AMR in Bangladesh. Exploratory and multivariate logistic models were used to describe an association between knowledge, attitudes, and practices of AMU and AMR and demographic characteristics of veterinarians. The results demonstrated that when selecting an antimicrobial, there was no to minimal influence of culture and susceptibility tests and patients’ AMU history but moderate to high influence of the farmer’s economic condition and drug instructions among the veterinarians. The results also demonstrated that more than half of the veterinarians had correct KAP regarding AMU and AMR, while the rest had moderate or lower levels of KAP. The factor score analysis revealed that age, level of education, years of experience, gender, and previous training on AMU and AMR were the key influencing factors in their level of KAP. Adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that respondents’ age, current workplace, and previous training on AMU and AMR had a positive association with increased KAP. Considering the results, it is imperative to include AMR issues on vet curricula, and to provide post-education training, awareness campaigns, easy access to, and dissemination of AMR resources. Increasing the veterinary services to the outreach areas of the country and motivating veterinarians to follow the national AMR guidelines could be some other potential solutions to tackle the over-prescriptions of antimicrobials.

Goats greatly influence the economic sustainability of rural communities. However, parasitic diseases, especially gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a major constraint on profitable small ruminants' production worldwide. During July- 2015 to June- 2016, we conducted a cross sectional study within seven topographic zones of Bangladesh to explore the level of infection and associated risk factors of GINs infections of goats. The study followed standard flotation and modified McMaster techniques. Among 1998 samples from goats; 1241 (62.1%) were found to be infected with one or more species of GINs by fecal examination for nematode eggs. The identified nematodes were strongyles (51.9%), Strongyloides sp. (19.0%) and Trichuris spp. (2.9%). By coproculture, we identified Haemonchus spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Trichostrongylus spp. and Bunostomum spp. in the different topographic zones. According to univariate analysis; young age, other breed than Black Bengal, animals in poor condition, backyard rearing system, muddy housing, illiterate farmers and rainy season were found significantly associated with GINs infections. Besides, other breed than Black Bengal, animals in poor condition, backyard rearing system, muddy housing and illiterate farmers were identified as the risk factors of GINs infections in goats. This is the first detailed epidemiological investigation of GINs of goats in Bangladesh. The epidemiological findings are expected to help formulate effective control strategies against GINs infections in goats by improving health status of animals, management system and education level of the farmers.

Objective: The current study was conducted to explore the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in small ruminants (sheep and goats) in relation to species, age, sex, season, and body condition in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional coprological survey was carried out at Mymensingh Sadar in Mymensingh from July 2015 to June 2016. In total, 433 fecal samples were screened for eggs/oocysts/cysts of parasite and counted by using standard qualitative and quantitative techniques. Eggs/oocysts/cysts were identified according to their characteristic features. Results: The study found 74.8% (n=324/433) prevalence of GI parasites in small ruminants. Species-wise prevalence indicated that 77.0% (n=268/348) goats and 65.9% (n=56/85) sheep harbored parasitic infection. Nine species of GI parasites were identified in the study area namely Strongyloides sp., Haemonchus sp., Oesophagostomum sp., Trichostrongylus sp., Trichuris sp., Paraphistomum spp., Fasciola spp., Eimeria spp. and Balantidium spp. The level of egg/oocyst/cyst per gram of feces (EPG/OPG/CPG) was ranged between 100 and 1200. Young small ruminants (78.4%) showed significantly (P=0.026) higher prevalence as compared to adult (68.8%). Between sexes, significantly (P=0.000) higher prevalence was found in female (83.6%) than male (64.7%). Infection was significantly (P=0.000) highest in poor body conditioned small ruminants (82.1%) as compared to moderate (72.2%) and good body conditioned (53.8%) small ruminants. In case of season, highest prevalence was found in rainy season (83.6%) followed by summer (78.6%) and winter (59.4%) with significant seasonal variations (P=0.000). Conclusion: Finally, GI parasites are endemic among small ruminants in the study area. Knowledge on these parasites and related epidemiological parameters is important for outlining fruitful control strategies against GI parasites. [J Adv Vet Anim Res 2017; 4(4.000): 356-362]

Macro-autophagy (autophagy) is a highly conserved eukaryotic intracellular process of self-digestion caused by lysosomes on demand, which is upregulated as a survival strategy upon exposure to various stressors, such as metabolic insults, cytotoxic drugs, and alcohol abuse. Paradoxically, autophagy dysfunction also contributes to cancer and aging. It is well known that regulating autophagy by targeting specific regulatory molecules in its machinery can modulate multiple disease processes. Therefore, autophagy represents a significant pharmacological target for drug development and therapeutic interventions in various diseases, including cancers. According to the framework of autophagy, the suppression or induction of autophagy can exert therapeutic properties through the promotion of cell death or cell survival, which are the two main events targeted by cancer therapies. Remarkably, natural products have attracted attention in the anticancer drug discovery field, because they are biologically friendly and have potential therapeutic effects. In this review, we summarize the up-to-date knowledge regarding natural products that can modulate autophagy in various cancers. These findings will provide a new position to exploit more natural compounds as potential novel anticancer drugs and will lead to a better understanding of molecular pathways by targeting the various autophagy stages of upcoming cancer therapeutics.

The application of epoxy adhesive is widespread in electronic packaging. Epoxy adhesives can be integrated with various types of nanoparticles for enhancing thermal conductivity. The joints with thermally conductive adhesive (TCA) are preferred for research and advances in thermal management. Many studies have been conducted to increase the thermal conductivity of epoxy-based TCAs by conductive fillers. This paper reviews and summarizes recent advances of these available fillers in TCAs that contribute to electronic packaging. It also covers the challenges of using the filler as a nano-composite. Moreover, the review reveals a broad scope for future research, particularly on thermal management by nanoparticles and improving bonding strength in electronic packaging.

Natural colorants have been used in several ways throughout human history, such as in food, dyes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and many other products. The study aimed to isolate the natural colorant-producing filamentous fungi Aspergillus niger from soil and extract pigments for its potential use specially for food production. Fourteen soil samples were collected from Madhupur National Park at Madhupur Upazila in the Mymensingh district, Bangladesh. The Aspergillus niger was isolated and identified from the soil samples by following conventional mycological methods (cultural and morphological characteristics), followed by confirmatory identification by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of conserved sequences of ITS1 ribosomal DNA using specific oligonucleotide primers. This was followed by genus- and species-specific primers targeting Aspergillus niger with an amplicon size of 521 and 310 bp, respectively. For pigment production, a mass culture of Aspergillus niger was conducted in Sabouraud dextrose broth in shaking conditions for seven days. The biomass was subjected to extraction of the pigments following an ethanol-based extraction method and concentrated using a rotary evaporator. Aspergillus niger could be isolated from three samples. The yield of extracted brown pigment from Aspergillus niger was 0.75% (w/v). Spectroscopic analysis of the pigments was carried out using a UV–VIS spectrophotometer. An in vivo experiment was conducted with mice to assess the toxicity of the pigments. From the colorimetric and sensory evaluations, pigment-supplemented products (cookies and lemon juice) were found to be more acceptable than the control products. This could be the first attempt to use Aspergillus niger extracted pigment from soil samples in food products in Bangladesh, but for successful food production, the food colorants must be approved by a responsible authority, e.g., the FDA or the BSTI. Moreover, fungal pigments could be used in the emerging fields of the food and textile industries in Bangladesh.

Poultry production has boomed in Bangladesh in recent years. The poultry sector has contributed significantly to meet the increased demand for animal source proteins in the country. However, increased use of antimicrobials appeared to be a significant threat to food safety in the poultry sector. The poultry drug and feed sellers are at the frontline position involving selecting and delivering the antimicrobials to the poultry farmers. Studies assessing the poultry drug and feed sellers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) are limited. The current study aimed to assess the community poultry drug and feed sellers’ KAPs of antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in some selected areas of Bangladesh. We determined the respondents’ (drug and the feed sellers) KAPs of AMU and AMR using a tested and paper-based questionnaire. The study demonstrated that most respondents have insufficient knowledge, less positive attitudes, and inappropriate practices regarding AMU and AMR. The factor score analysis further showed that the type of respondents and their years of experience, level of education, and training on the drug were the significant factors impacting the current knowledge, attitudes, and practices of AMU and AMR. The adjusted logistic regression analysis revealed that the drug sellers who completed their education up to 12th grade and had training on the drug had adequate knowledge of AMU and AMR. The data also showed that the drug sellers belong to the age group 31–35 and 36–40 years and who completed 12th grade had good attitudes on the same. Likewise, the analysis further determined that drug sellers belonging to the age category 18–25 and 26–30 years, and interestingly, the respondents who completed education up to 12th grade, had better practices. Spearman’s rank-order correlation revealed a positive association between each pair of the KAPs scores for the respondents. The correlation was fair between knowledge–attitudes, knowledge–practices, and attitudes–practices. Based on the current study results, we recommend educational interventions and appropriate training for the poultry drug and feed sellers to raise awareness and to upgrade their current knowledge on the appropriate use of antimicrobials. This will ultimately lead to reducing the chances of developing AMR in the poultry sectors of the country.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become an emerging health issue globally, posing a threat to zoonotic pathogens and foodborne diseases. In Bangladesh, the poultry sector supplies the majority of the demand for animal-source protein. The irrational and excessive use of antimicrobials (AMU) has been observed in the poultry sector. The development of AMR is associated with many factors, including the knowledge and attitudes of poultry farmers. Therefore, AMR reduction requires intervention from all the stockholders, including the farmers who are considered as end users of antimicrobials. This current research conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of poultry farmers on AMU and AMR in Bangladesh. We determined the KAP of poultry farmers (broiler and layer farmers) of some selected districts of the country using a tested and paper-based questionnaire. The results demonstrated that most of the respondents have insufficient KAP regarding AMU and AMR. The respondents used a variety of antimicrobials primarily in the treatment of various diseases in poultry. One-third of the farmers did not seek antimicrobials from registered vets. Instead, they depended on others or themselves. The factor score analysis further revealed that the farmers’ demographic and socioeconomic variables were significant factors influencing the KAP. An adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that older farmers with 9–12 years of farming experience and graduate-level education, engaging in medium-sized layer farming, were more likely to have correct KAP on AMU and AMR. Further, farmers from the Cox’s Bazar region showed correct knowledge, whereas farmers of the Chattogram region showed a correct attitude towards AMU and AMR. A Spearman’s rank-order correlation revealed a positive association between knowledge–attitudes and knowledge–practices. The findings of the current investigation provide baseline evidence about the KAP of poultry farmers from low-income resources and offer insights into designing interventions and policies for the use of AMU and AMR in Bangladesh.

Background: This fact-finding study aimed to attain an overall idea and knowledge about medicine disposal practices in Dhaka Metropolitan households. Methods: This mixed study (both quantitative and qualitative) was orchestrated to inspect the household leftover medicine disposal pattern’s governing status. A cross-sectional survey was conducted following a structured questionnaire and key informant interview with a household person and in-depth interviews with the top pharmaceutical and government officials. Results: Findings disclose that, for most of the key informants, the terms “drug disposal” and “drug pollution” were unknown; more precisely, 67% and 74% of key informants even did not hear these two terms. Almost all (87%) households faced undesired incidents due to the insecure storage of medicines. People disposed of excess and expired medication in regular dustbins (47%), threw out of the window (19%), flushed within commode (4%), burnt in fire (2%), and reused (4%). A good percentage of people (21%) returned unexpired drugs to the pharmacy and bought other medicines on a need basis. A total of 72% wanted a medicine take-back program, and 100% agreed on mass education on this issue. Officials of pharmaceuticals conferred mixed opinion: top-ranked pharmaceuticals will adopt leftover medicine disposal practices; middle and low-ranked pharmaceutical companies are reluctant, merely denied mentioning the less important issue. Conclusions: The absence of mass awareness and standard laws and policies may explain these existing aberrant practices.

Objective: Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic infection is a prime cause of failures in sheep production. This study was conducted to ascertain the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GIT) helminths of sheep in Sherpur district, Bangladesh. Besides, prevalence of helminthiasis in sheep also assessed considering age, sex, nutritional condition and rearing system. Materials and methods: In total, 106 rectal fecal samples of sheep were randomly collected and were examined for the presence of ova by using direct smear and Stoll’s ova counting techniques during July to October, 2016. Eggs were identified on the basis of its size, morphology and other landmark features. Results: Out of 106 samples, 67.9% (n=72/106) revealed the presence of ova of different helminths. The prevalence of helminth infection was associated with Fasciola gigantica (11.3%; n=12/106), Paramphistomes (13.2%; n=14/106), Schistosoma indicum (3.8%; n=4/106), Moniezia sp. (3.8%; n=4/106), Strongyle-type (24.5%; n=26/106), hook worm (6.6%; n=7/106), Strongyloides sp. (12.3%; n=13/106) and Trichuris sp. (1.9%; n=2/106). Egg count per gram (EPG) was calculated which was ranged between 100 and 600. Parasitic counts in lambs, young and adult showed no significant variations (P=0.511) from one other. Infection was significantly (P=0.04) higher in poor body conditioned sheep (76.3 %) as contrasted to normal body conditioned sheep (57.4%). No significant variation (P=0.601) was noticed in infection rates between sexes. Females displayed a higher infection (70.0%) as compared to males (65.2%). In rearing system, the result was found statistically insignificant (P=0.247). Conclusion: Utterly, GI helminths are endemic at great levels among sheep in the study area. Also, their infestation differs within various age groups, sexes, nutritional condition and rearing system of sheep. [J Adv Vet Anim Res 2017; 4(3.000): 274-280]

Abstract Background The Tridax procumbens extracts (TPE) are known for their ethno-medicinal properties to increase osteogenic functioning in mesenchymal stem cells. Recently, we found that the T. procumbens flavonoids (TPF) significantly suppressed the RANKL-induced osteoclasts differentiation and bone resorption. The TPF also promoted osteoblasts differentiation and bone formation demonstrated by increasing bone formation markers in cultured mouse primary osteoblasts. However, the effects of the TPF on in vivo bone formation remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of the TPF on in vivo bone formation, injected the TPF (20 mg/kg) twice a day in the low calcium diet mice and killed them after 21 day. Radiographic and histomorphometric analyses were performed on the dissected bones to determine the anabolic effects of the TPF. Results Bone mineral density and bone mineral content of the TPF-treated mice were significantly increased compared to the control mice. Bone formation-related indices like osteoblast number, osteoblast surface, bone volume, mineralizing surface, mineral apposition rate and bone formation rate were significantly increased in the TPF-treated mice compared to the control mice. Conclusion Our findings point towards the stimulation of bone formation by TPF, suggested that the TPF could be a potential natural anabolic agent to treat patients with bone loss-associated diseases such as osteoporosis.
