This series consists of a partial log of activities of the office staff of the Commission on Relief for Widowed Mothers along with a tally of office expenses. Entry headings include work; phones (incoming and outgoing calls); calls or reports by staff; and notes of interviews, meetings, and conferences attended. A separate section toward the end of the volume labeled "Financial Accounts" lists (and totals) daily office expenditures, bills and salaries.

The series lists information on cases of children of widows in New York and Bronx counties who were committed to institutions by children's court justices. The extracts include information on children, mostly teenagers, who were committed for theft, assault, truancy, immorality, parental neglect, or other reasons. Column headings for information includes case number; sex; age; color; religion; nationality of parent; nationality of child; offense for which committed; source of facts/complaint; and reasons justifying complaint.

The series consists of administrative correspondence of the Secretary of the Commission on Relief for Widowed Mothers with state officials and representatives of charitable organizations relating to the commission's investigation and report. Subjects include information on efforts to provide relief of the poor, the commission's study of policies and practices of the Charity Organization Society of the City of New York, a report summarizing and commenting on testimony of New York City organizations, and progress of widow's pension legislation.

The series consists of typescript copies, with infrequent annotations, of testimony given to the commission and its subcommittees on the question of relief for widowed mothers caring for dependent children. The commission, as authorized by Chapter 588 of the Laws of 1913, called representatives of many charitable organizations to confer with commission members on the objectives, policies, and work of their respective organizations in providing such relief.
