Despite its specific visuality, the spectacle has not played any major role in film studies. By deconstructing the cultural history of the term, this study sounds out its analytical potential. Three analyses spanning the history of film show how the spectacle appears as a dynamic network of gazes in the staging of surfaces – and thus how visibility itself is negotiated aesthetically.

As algorithmic data processing increasingly pervades everyday life, it is also making its way into the worlds of art, literature and music. In doing so, it shifts notions of creativity and evokes non-anthropocentric perspectives on artistic practice. This volume brings together contributions from the fields of cultural studies, literary studies, musicology and sound studies as well as media studies, sociology of technology, and beyond, presenting a truly interdisciplinary, state-of-the-art picture of the transformation of creative practice brought about by various forms of AI.

- Abstract

- Abstract

The goal of the present study is to demonstrate the media-aesthetic potential of infographic messages on particular cases. This can be done due to an integrated approach to the analysis of the visual content of media content. That indicates the case study method implementation as well as description and generalization. The theoretical basis of the research is represented by scientific studies of various directions. That includes the history of media and visual media culture; features of the concepts of media culture and media language, media aesthetics; infographics as a tool of media language. The empirical basis of the study is journalistic materials containing infographic content of such publications as by RIA Novosti (ria.ru), TASS (tass.ru). The examples of visual image implementation in the transmission of information — media content containing infographics — are given and analyzed. Considering media aesthetics as the formation of a sensory perception of the proposed media content, the author turns to the philosophical and aesthetic foundations of visual practices in the media and post-humanistic trends in journalism. As a result of the analysis of the theoretical and practical basis of the research, the author comes to the conclusion that today the role of the media aesthetic component of messages is most relevant. And infographics, as the connecting link of language and consciousness, is its most striking tool.

This article considers Friedich Gottlieb Klopstock as an unlikely contributor to a "New Enlightenment." Using Klopstock's work on declamation, orthography, and meter, it argues that Klopstock foregrounds speaking and especially hearing as central to human subjectivity. - Abstract
The article examines the special projects of the publication "Arguments and Facts", which are a polycode journalistic text, determines the role of the media aesthetic component in creating a publicistic image. The theoretical basis of the research was the works of M. A. Berezhnoy, M. V. Zagidullina, E. Kats. The case method made it possible to characterize the main features of a polycode media text in terms of media aesthetic potential: interactivity, conceptual design, and organization of space. Together they allow you to create a coherent, convincing, expressive image, to establish contact with the addressee. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MASS media ,SOCIAL networks ,VIDEOS ,INTERNET - Abstract
This paper is devoted to the "nature of image" in the new media environment. The author re-conceptualizes the image as a basis of textual, visual and audial culture. Two factors of this revision are explained: (1) the facilitation of the complex creation and consumption of communicative unities, or artifacts (complexes of video, audio, texts and other forms), (2) the ability to capture a massive interest for new forms of imagery in social networks and the internet (a research evidence of this interest). The theory of the image, presented in the writings of Jean-Luc Nancy, is applied to the actual facts of communicative exchange allowing to identify some new directions for the development of media aesthetic phenomena. The main empirical material of the article is the growing mass interest in video and audio clips, such as #oddlysatisfying and ASMR. The author uses this material to confirm Nancy's idea on the concentration of image formation in an "invisible" zone (beyond the representation of the object itself: the image is interlined, it is between sounds, it is behind pictures). The article focuses on web documentaries as a form of interactive historiography by presenting a case study on Freedom's Ring (2013), a multi-media-based animation of Martin Luther King's speech 'I have a Dream' published in Vectors. Taking both the production and the reception side into account, the article addresses the constitution of knowledge – or rather aesthetic experience – through artistic research practices. In doing so, it reflects upon the concepts of authorship, copyright and participation. Due to its numerous sources, the navigation system, the artwork, its referentiality and variability, it is made the case that Freedom's Ring challenges history as a 'grand narrative' by creating a subjective point of view and putting the user in the position of an activist. Web documentaries are regarded as part of an epistemic and sociopolitical development, in which artistic and academic methods merge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analysis of recent exhibitions featuring Alexander Kluge's earlier films and televisual work in dialogue with work by other artists demonstrates how the aesthetics of installation art and modes of exhibiting moving images in art museums and galleries have allowed Kluge to continue developing but also revise practices he first engaged in other media. The so-calledwhite-cube exhibition space presents Kluge's earlier works in terms of remediation and provides him with an opportunity to employ and reconceptualize his approach to montage techniques and reception aesthetics. With their deployment in the white cube, his earlier works become emphatically transmedial, their content and forms no longer bound to one primary medium. This article proposes that the white cube might be better suited for actively and collectively engaging with Kluge'swork in the twenty-first century than the black box of the cinema, the late-night television screen, or the internet. - Abstract
Contemporary transformations in the aesthetics associated with online vertical content are a prime example of remediation between mobile video recording technology, diversification of online distribution platforms, and creators’ enthusiasm to explore new video forms in exchange for higher audience reach and engagement. By deconstructing texts available on YouTubeVEVO and Netflix through the lens of Applied Media Aesthetics, this research examines the choices that professionals make while they utilise conventions associated with online vertical video and its consumption on a mobile screen. Additionally, through interviews with experienced practitioners, I survey the principal differences in production of widescreen and vertical content, and look at potential benefits and limitations of a smartphone as a primary recording device in the professional production workflow. Lastly, as I plan, film and edit six original artefacts, I reflect on the affordances of a vertical frame through the eyes of a cinematographer on set and editor in post-production. The mixed methodology provides a robust framework for examining the principal benefits and limitations of a vertical frame in a professional production workflow and for answering the key thesis question: how do framing, filming technology, and choice of distribution platforms influence media professionals' aesthetic decisions while creating online vertical content? Throughout the research, I re-examine assumptions about acceptable screen aesthetics commonly held by media professionals and provide insights into the remediation of widescreen content for a vertical frame.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reorganized existing methods of exchange, turning comparatively marginal technologies into the new normal. Multipoint videoconferencing in particular has become a favored means for web-based forms of remote communication and collaboration without physical copresence. Taking the recent mainstreaming of videoconferencing as its point of departure, this anthology examines the complex mediality of this new form of social interaction. Connecting theoretical reflection with material case studies, the contributors question practices, politics and aesthetics of videoconferencing and the specific meanings it acquires in different historical, cultural and social contexts.

As the dominant narrative forms in the age of media convergence, films and games call for a transmedial perspective in narratology. Games allow a participatory reception of the story, bringing the transgression of the ontological boundary between the narrated world and the world of the recipient into focus. These diverse transgressions - medial and ontological - are the subject of this transdisciplinary compendium, which covers the subject in an interdisciplinary way from various perspectives: game studies and media studies, but also sociology and psychology, to take into account the great influence of storytelling on social discourses and human behavior.

In this study, with the help of aesthetic analysis, we considered the video by blogger Danila Poperechnyi "They are trying to shut me up". We believe that the video content on YouTube should be viewed from not only communicative positions, but also aesthetic ones. Bloggers trying to influence audience emotionally, to broadcast certain ideas. We developed an approximate algorithm for the mediaesthetic analysis of video on YouTube. Also we used the following methods for video analysis: aesthetically-applied analysis, qualitative content analysis, quantitative content analysis. With this approach, we identified the aesthetic techniques of the blogger and his communicative task, suggested a possible audience's reaction to the video. Using the comment section on YouTube, we were able to track the response of recipients to the video. By selecting the most popular comments, we revealed the main emotional responses to the video. We suggest that such an algorithm and classification can help in further research of the video content on the YouTube site. A systematic approach to the analysis of videos by particular blogger contributes to the compilation and classification of the main aesthetic features of the channel. It also can reveal the aesthetic strategy of blogger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the example of the materials of the Internet publication «Takie Dela» (These things), the author considers the formation of a media aesthetic code in the materials of a social orientation. The work is clearly structured. It consists of introduction, conclusion and four parts: multimedia journalism; special projects — to the definition of the concept; media aesthetic code and analysis of the materials of the Internet publication «Takie Dela». Each of the paragraphs can be considered as an independent unit, at the same time explaining and forming the whole text of the presented article. The main methods of research were the method of continuous sampling (at the stage of formation of the empirical base); content analysis method, case study and method of media aesthetic analysis of the text (at the stage of analysis of materials included in the research base), analysis and generalization (at the stage of preparing the conclusions of the study). The theoretical and methodological basis of the study is represented by scientific works in such areas as genres and formats of journalism, code theory, media aesthetics and media aesthetic code. The results of the performed media aesthetic analysis demonstrate that socially oriented special projects have a hybrid form of material organization, monochrome in the choice of color scheme, descriptiveness and figurativeness in the design of the content of the material.,

Summary: Gaming no longer only takes place as a ›closed interactive experience‹ in front of TV screens, but also as broadcast on streaming platforms or as cultural events in exhibition centers and e-sport arenas. The popularization of new technologies, forms of expression, and online services has had a considerable influence on the academic and journalistic discourse about games. This anthology examines which paratexts gaming cultures have produced - i.e., in which forms and formats and through which channels we talk (and write) about games - as well as the way in which paratexts influence the development of games. How is knowledge about games generated and shaped today and how do boundaries between (popular) criticism, journalism, and scholarship have started to blur? In short: How does the paratext change the text?

Summary: What do stories in games have in common with political narratives? This book identifies narrative strategies as mechanisms for meaning and manipulation in games and real life. It shows that the narrative mechanics so clearly identifiable in games are increasingly used (and abused) in politics and social life. They have »many faces«, displays and interfaces. They occur as texts, recipes, stories, dramas in three acts, movies, videos, tweets, journeys of heroes, but also as rewarding stories in games and as narratives in society - such as a career from rags to riches, the concept of modernity or market economy. Below their surface, however, narrative mechanics are a particular type of motivational design - of game mechanics.

DOCUMENTARY films , *REALISM , *NATIONAL security , *SOCIAL responsibility , *MEDIA literacy - Abstract
The characteristic of the documentary film, representation of "reality" is the credible medium as compared to other available medium formats. Documentary film plays an important role on social responsibility for stability and security in a society of a government and a country. The production technics of a documentary is one of the most important factor for propaganda documentary film, in order to get people's support and eliminated the public unrest. Modern technology helps to increase the understanding and construct of meaning using effective visual aid. Therefore ideology can be conveyed to the target audience especially using documentary film. The five basic field of media aesthetics in film and video are lighting and color, two dimension field, three dimension field, time and movement and sound used in documentary film to convey meaning or ideology that favors to the group of people. This research used content analysis method of how documentary is constructed using the five basic fields of media aesthetics. Research outcome shows the usage of the five basic fields of media aesthetics is used to add dramatic effect, realism, invoke emotion and create tension within a documentary film. Video has been used as an instrument to create harm that threatens national security. However, documentary film is still the best tool to eradicate such threat. The embedded ideology within the aesthetic media should be used in documentary film production especially history genre so the documentary film can invoke patriotism for the sake for national stability and national security. We witness an era with more screens than ever before, and within each screen, a multitude of visual varieties. Lisa Gotto investigates this medial diversity as a field of tension between large and small forms of digital image culture. This includes, on the one hand, the immersive potential of large image arrangements, such as digital 3D cinema, and, on the other hand, the compactness of mobile image forms, such as those of the smartphone film or the media practices of Instagram. Weaving together a rich variety of examples and sources, this book presents a multifaceted collection of essays that explore the transformational potential of digital media culture, contextualize its media-technical conditions, and reflect on its social consequences.

Gaming has never been disconnected from reality. When we engage with ever more lavish virtual worlds, something happens to us. The game imposes itself on us and influences how we feel about it, the world, and ourselves. How do games accomplish this and to what end? The contributors explore the video game as an atmospheric medium of hitherto unimagined potential. Is the medium too powerful, too influential? A danger to our mental health or an ally through even the darkest of times? This volume compiles papers from the Young Academics Workshop at the Clash of Realities conferences of 2019 and 2020 to provide answers to these questions.

What constitutes a data practice and how do contemporary digital media technologies reconfigure our understanding of practices in general? Autonomously acting media, distributed digital infrastructures, and sensor-based media environments challenge the conditions of accounting for data practices both theoretically and empirically. Which forms of cooperation are constituted in and by data practices? And how are human and nonhuman agencies distributed and interrelated in data-saturated environments? The volume collects theoretical, empirical, and historiographical contributions from a range of international scholars to shed light on the current shift from media to data practices.

»Perhaps all politics starts with breathing« (John Durham Peters).

What are the characteristic features of avatar-based singleplayer videogames, from Super Mario Bros. to Grand Theft Auto? Rune Klevjer examines this question with a particular focus on issues of fictionality and realism, and their relation to cinema and Virtual Reality. Through close-up analysis and philosophical discussion, Klevjer argues that avatar-based gaming is a distinctive and dominant form of virtual self-embodiment in digital culture. This book is a revised edition of Rune Klevjer's pioneering work from 2007, featuring a new introduction by the author and afterword by Stephan Günzel, Jörg Sternagel, and Dieter Mersch.

Game culture and material culture have always been closely linked. Analog forms of rule-based play (ludus) would hardly be conceivable without dice, cards, and game boards. In the act of free play (paidia), children as well as adults transform simple objects into multifaceted toys in an almost magical way. Even digital play is suffused with material culture: Games are not only mediated by technical interfaces, which we access via hardware and tangible peripherals. They are also subject to material hybridization, paratextual framing, and processes of de-, and re-materialization.
