2. Fashion journalism ethics and the pursuit of a responsible fashion system.

- Abstract
What are the ethical obligations of a fashion journalist? We argue fashion journalists have a central role to play in addressing the industry's most pressing issues, including but not limited to environmental degradation, worker exploitation and social justice. Moreover, we argue fashion journalists are in a unique position to help co-constitute the 'good life' as it pertains to our fashionable selves and societies. However, without a clearly articulated ethic of fashion journalism, we cannot hope to have an ethical and responsible fashion industry with which to build such a life. We contend that this must be done not through prioritizing a consumer identity for readership – the default subject position in lifestyle journalism – but through the readership's subject position as citizen and moral agent. In the broadest critique we offer here, we posit that fashion journalism and journalists have been exempted from the traditional ethical obligation of a press responsible to a public, and we seek to recentre the fashion journalist as a key agent in the work towards a more just and caring society. This article looks into the ethical issues raised by AI-generated content, focusing on ‘sensitive’ topics like school shootings. As AI technologies progress, there is a greater risk that such information can accidentally reinforce negative narratives, glorify acts of violence, or cause psychological damage to victims and their communities. The study tackles these concerns by estimating the existing ethical frameworks and finding their limitations in dealing with these complicated situations. A main goal of the research is to create a refined set of ethical principles specifically geared to address the risks connected with AI-generated information about school shootings. The paper contains actual experiments using AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude, GigaChat, and YandexGPT to generate and analyze information about school shootings. These experiments highlight important issues in ensuring that AI-generated texts do not reinforce negative themes or cause suffering. For example, while some models, such as GigaChat, declined to generate content on sensitive themes, others, such as ChatGPT, created elaborate texts that risked retraumatizing readers or praising offenders. The findings show that, while current frameworks take into consideration basic concepts such as transparency, accountability, and fairness, they frequently lack precise direction for dealing with difficult issues. To close this gap, the suggested ethical framework incorporates particular content development criteria, stakeholder participation, responsible dissemination techniques, and ongoing research. This paradigm prioritizes the protection of vulnerable people and the prevention of psychological injury.

Carried out as part of an educational project by Hugo Saez under the supervision of Doina Muresanu, this case study focuses on ethical aspects linked to the field of journalism. It can be used for undergraduate or graduate students in the field of organizational management or communication. The present case study takes as a subject of analysis the situation of the French media, given Hugo’s work experience in this profession and in this country. For this reason, the case is written in the first person. More concretely, students will learn about the regulations governing this profession in France, the misconduct that continues to persist in the field, and end with lessons to be learned. After having gone through the description of the situation, students are invited to think about questions relating to ethical issues linked to the French media sphere, to the errors of conduct encountered when searching for information as well as to causes which could explain the distancing of journalism from its ethical principles anchored in practice for several decades. Basically, the case study aims to raise students’ awareness of issues related to the study of applied ethics in a particular context, which is the practice of journalism in France.

Media ethics has long been haunted by the question of representing human beings' vulnerability to violence. While journalism and photojournalism have an obligation to report on the realities of violence and suffering in the world, the "spectacle of suffering" is fraught with ethical dilemmas. In this essay, I seek to theorize the ethics of vulnerability to violence in media representation. As a starting point, I argue for the politics of embodiment as a generative process that constitutes differential vulnerabilities. I move then to consider the way embodied vulnerabilities play out in the media, as exemplified by recent events such as the Black Lives Matter and MeToo movements as well as in times of war, from Vietnam to, more recently, Ukraine and Israel/Palestine. This leads to considerations of spectatorship: who looks and who is looked at? How are these relations of gazing related to the vectors of social and geopolitical power? Are images of embodied vulnerability simply media spectacles that reinforce power hierarchies, or are they powerful prosocial messages that might mobilize humanitarian activism? To address these epistemic questions, I propose that the feminist ethics of care encompasses an invitational rhetoric that can guide media praxis. Care ethics is aligned with various religious epistemologies, and because of that, I argue for it as an umbrella framework that has application in a variety of national and cultural contexts. Newspaper organisations have seen their models overturned, largely due to the digitisation of formats. While the existing literature on media management has identified the economic and strategic consequences of this creeping digitalisation, there is a need for more in-depth analysis. How can digitalisation provide an opportunity for traditional news media organisations to regain their lost social legitimacy by enhancing the human development of societies? In this exploratory article, we study the recent "humanistic turn" in business ethics to draw theoretical insights for the newspaper sector. We then present a concrete example of an original digital project illustrating this possible shift, allowing us to discuss some of its theoretical and managerial implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is an examination of war propaganda and correspondents in concomitance with the 1948 Resolution 217A of the UN Covenant prohibiting war propaganda under the rubric of media ethics and the applicable principles and guidelines. The thematic internal contradictions of war propaganda and the intentional or unintentional disregard for ethical news analysis, coverage, reportage, and objectivity are examined. The United Nations' International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights prohibits war propaganda. This qualitative study calls for the continuation of compelling scholarship to advance human rights to live in peace and constructive social change through serious ethical application and consideration in the coverage and reportage of war. Four of the objectives of this study are to (i) promote an update of the 1948 Resolution 217A of the UN Covenant prohibiting war propaganda; (ii) re-emphasize the necessity for media ethics in belligerent and non-aggressive theaters; (iii) address some of the internal conflicts in media ethics' principles of universality; and (iv) contribute to the literature on war propaganda, human rights to live in peace, and media ethics. The study is significant because there is the need for a dispassionate, objective and scholarly examination of the phenomenon at a time of crises across the globe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The disinformation that threatened media coverage in Spain during the COVID-19 pandemic was perceived as a serious threat by the population, which became a crucial ethical challenge for health information. This nationwide study is part of a global research project whose primary objective was to know and delve further into the behavior of citizens in the face of journalistic information related to COVID-19, to determine the channels used by audiences to learn about the pandemic and their personal informative interaction through social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). The field sample (June 2022) comprised 1,800 online surveys (carried out using the CAWI system) of persons aged 18 years and older residing in the country. Quotas were established by sex, age and Autonomous Community. The sampling error is ±2.34, with a confidence level of 95.5% and p = q = 0.5. The data collected were processed with the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 package. The results confirm a majority belief (values 4 + 5/5) that journalism pursues the truth (59.5%). They also show in adults the predominance of a high confidence in their ability to detect falsehoods, as opposed to the low self-perception confessed by young people. Inversely proportional is the verifying effort of these population groups. There is no homogeneous agreement that discrimination against vulnerable groups (obese people, smokers, the elderly, migrants) was encouraged despite the medium-high caliber of the assessment (3.35/5.00). The most notorious finding was to confirm the majority social demand (values 4 + 5/5 = 72.6%) to implement some external control on the professional collective that guarantees ethical adequacy and quality in the informative coverage of health issues, which suggests a system of journalistic co-regulation.

AbstractJournalism, with its claim to professionalism, is guided in its practice by ethical codes which prescribe what is considered ‘good work’. This theoretical article argues that, though based on certain universal prescriptions, ethics is socially and culturally situated. The observance of the codes is socially determined based on the prevailing moral and political conditions. It is also argued that the issue of the type and quality of representations available in the media should also be of concern when we discuss ethics. The article discusses some of the social constraints to the observance of ethics within the Nigerian context and argues for the need to pay greater attention to addressing the material and economic barriers to media access and representation.

Objectivism is the most important moral principle of American and European journalists. This principle emphasizes the fact that news reports should be produced without adopting a biased approach and also based on external and tangible facts and realities. The most famous model of objectivism belongs to political science theorist Jurgen Westersal, who defines objectivism based on the two pillars of neutrality and realism. On the other hand, in Islamic thought, the realistic view, which is rooted in the inherent reason and divine revelation, has established a moral school that is opposed to non-realist schools and natural realist schools. This is despite the fact that Westersal's model of objectivism, although it considers the objective reality, but in the end, in terms of media evaluation criteria, it has distanced itself from it and its ethical criterion is the contract of transparency and impartiality in The media puts Using the method of fundamental analysis, this research deals with the calculation of the moral components of Islam which is at the intersection with the news function of the media, and Westersal's approach is based on the ontological, epistemological and anthropological foundations of the moral school of Islam. challenges and shows that this approach has a stutter due to the confusion of the ontological and epistemological dimensions in the interpretation of objectivism, and due to the non-acceptance of the plurality of sources of knowledge and the denial of the possibility of rational knowledge, as well as the lack of the striving process of perfection. And the guidance and also the non-valuability of neutrality of the media is far from the reality of news value from the point of view of Islam.

17. Ethical aspects of preparing journalistic materials about children and for children’s audiences: A humanistic approach

Thе article examines a two-pronged problem: the need to develop fundamental documents on the Russian media’s observance of humanistic principles, when preparing materials about childhood, as well as the lack of a professional journalistic school within which such approaches are formed and supported. The author turns to scientific research in the fi eld of deontology and philosophy of journalism and comes to the conclusion, that the implementation of tasks to humanize the information space depends not only on the level of the development of media ethics, but also on the will of journalists, the political situation, and the structure of the media market at the stage of its economic transformation. In an aggressive media environment and when the professional journalistic community ignores ethical principles, the most vulnerable audience group subject to negative infl uence are minors. Today, some editorial offi ces deliberately deviate from the norms of morality and ethics in the process of creating a potentially “saleable” information product, while children and adolescents, according to statistics, are regularly indirect consumers of non-target content. That is why the author of the article chooses media texts from professional media as an empirical basis, since their authors, unlike many bloggers and content creators on social networks, as editorial staff , are aware of the responsibility not only at the legislative but also at the corporate level. Certain ethical charters and standards ratifi ed by journalistic organizations in Russia contain recommendations for the preparation of media materials that address the topic of childhood directly or indirectly. A detailed analysis of the presented documents allows us to conclude that some provisions adopted in the early 2000s have lost their relevance, and today it is necessary not only to revise their content, but also to raise the question among practitioners about the need to show greater attention to measures of deterring aggressive rhetoric, as well as the question about the introduction of new self-regulation mechanisms.

The representation of "pest" animals in mass media can reflect wider societal attitudes about belonging, race, and purity. In New Zealand, the Australian brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) is portrayed as the nation's top enemy. This project examined online news articles published in New Zealand between 2016 and 2023 to explore how possums were framed after the creation of the Predator Free 2050 "pest" eradication campaign that sought to eradicate all invasive rats, stoats, and possums. Through a process of qualitative thematic analysis, it was discovered that themes of militancy, economy, and desensitization of cruelty were paired with dark humor and extreme objectification of possums. This has created a culture of creaturely racism and speciesist xenophobia that presents cruelty as patriotism. A new media ethics that prioritizes an intersectional, anti-speciesist praxis is necessary to prevent the nation's enculturation of vigilante slayers who are encouraged to kill those deemed to not belong. This paradigm repair study contributes to advertising ethics research by analyzing discourse from trade publications and press outlets regarding the divisive 2017 Kendall Jenner Pepsi advertisement. After the controversary surrounding the commercial ensued, actors within and outside the advertising industry argued the ad violated the ethical boundaries of the industry because it coopted a social issue, acted as a form of cultural appropriation, and served as an example of brand activism (gone awry). This study examines the reasons why this happened and concludes with an argument for paradigm repair's utility for studying advertising ethics, and with implications for advertising practice. This moral psychology study surveys the College of Fellows of the Public Relations Society of America to examine morally relevant features and motivations. Using the Moral Foundations Theory assessment in conjunction with other moral psychology measures, the results (n = 59) affirm the exemplar status of Fellows, reflected in Global Character Strengths, personality traits and ethical ideology. Fellows reject relativism and rate Honesty and Fairness among their top Character Strengths, reflecting key ethical norms for public relations practice. Results also document links regarding empathy, justice and harm, reflecting the moral intuitionist orientations found to be common among populations in Western developed countries. Overall, the emerging moral psychology profile of PR exemplars embodies the spirit and core meta-ethical elements of both an ethic of care and neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has shown that young people's voices are under- and misrepresented in the news. However, the editorial mechanisms behind this outcome remain largely unexplored. Drawing from the professional frame of media accountability, young people present journalism with a double challenge: to avoid harm while enabling participation. In this paper, we examine editorial mechanisms of including/excluding young people in the news in Sweden and Estonia through an overview of ethical breach cases affecting minors and a set of semi-structured interviews with editors. These investigations are set in the context of digital changes and from the perspectives of children's rights and childhood as a social construct. The interview study revealed that facilitating the freedom of expression might be an editorial ideal, but in practice, minors have limited value as news sources. While editors paid close attention to protective measures for underage interviewees, these measures were sometimes inconsistent and overly protective. Furthermore, the majority of ethical breach cases concerned children who were talked about, rather than with. Therefore, we argue that current editorial interpretations of media accountability limit young people's voices in the news, while still failing to provide an effective remedy for harm. DEMOCRACY ,FREEDOM of the press - Abstract
Fragile states are conditioned by the politics of interests, which oscillates between social, ethnic, factional, political and economic agitations. The politics of interest impairs shared identity and creates a tense coexistence between already fragmented communities. Ethiopia presents an example of the erosion of democratic norms despite the constitutionally imposed politics of ethnically and regionally based societies. Fragile states defy theoretical wisdom, as the media and elections might, in certain circumstances, produce negative results by creating a fractured society rather than resolving the legitimacy crisis. This article analysed academic literature and reflected on theories of the media in democracy to deconstruct the role of the legacy and new media in radical polarisation and nation-building in Ethiopia. Furthermore, illustrations were drawn from incidents and developments to clarify conditions that can help the mass media refrain from actions that deliberately or inadvertently impede socio-economic growth and worsen political conditions in fragile democracies. This article asserts that without context adaptation, the liberal norms of media autonomy and political inclusion might be incompatible with other forms of democracy beyond affluent democracies. It concludes by proposing theoretical visions of a 'democratic mirror', 'vigilantism and fraternisation' and the 'therapeutic' function of the media in fragile democracies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study delves into public perceptions of media social responsibility within the contemporary Albanian media landscape. Through a comprehensive analysis of various factors, the study identifies the prevailing principles that the public deems crucial for the media’s social responsibility and how these principles can enhance the media’s contribution to society. A structured questionnaire was used to capture a wide range of public perceptions, with 1,321 questionnaires filled out. These questionnaires were distributed using a face-to-face method across five major urban centers in Albania, ensuring a comprehensive and representative sample of public viewpoints. The distribution method employed a stratified sampling approach to ensure diverse representation across different demographic groups. Additionally, employing a mixed-methods approach, the research includes qualitative interviews with 20 influential stakeholders, including media directors, professors, analysts, and media researchers. Purposive sampling was utilized to select stakeholders representing various sectors of the media landscape. Rigorous measures were taken to mitigate data pollution, including thorough interviewer training and constant monitoring of data quality. An overarching thematic analysis was conducted to identify common themes and patterns across the qualitative interviews, complementing the quantitative findings. To gain further insights, we purposefully selected and conducted a focus group with 28 journalists from various media platforms. The sampling method for the focus group involved purposive sampling to ensure representation from diverse media backgrounds and experiences. Data collected from the focus group underwent thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns, contributing to an overarching qualitative analysis. This mixed-methods approach facilitated a comprehensive understanding of journalists’ perspectives on social responsibility and the challenges they encounter in fulfilling it. The empirical findings reveal that the media’s social responsibility in Albania does not fully adhere to the expected standards encompassing all relevant principles. Internal dynamics within media organizations and external forces from politics, economics, and society collectively influence this shortfall. The study highlights the importance of considering public perceptions and expectations in shaping media’s social responsibility, emphasizing the need for substantial improvements.

Media ethics has long been haunted by the question of representing human beings’ vulnerability to violence. While journalism and photojournalism have an obligation to report on the realities of violence and suffering in the world, the “spectacle of suffering” is fraught with ethical dilemmas.

The offered social-scientific analysis is based on a critical discussion of key problems present in the Slovak media environment, such as the ethical self-regulation of the media, freedom of expression, the right to obtain information, or the legal protection of the sources of information. The study also refers to available scholarly sources and the previously published body of knowledge to assess the development of the media system in Slovakia over the past 30 years, outlining the country’s (in)ability to foster deliberative communication and democracy. The results suggest that the legal and ethical aspects of the Slovak media system do support some of the principles of deliberative communication, specifically freedom of expression and free access to information; however, free speech is not sufficiently confronted with the boundaries of protecting privacy and human dignity to prevent defamation and hate speech. Media autonomy based on the possibility of self-regulation is not sufficiently developed either. A serious problem is the lack of transparency in the media.

This study builds upon historical scholarship of the royal family and the British press to examine a critical incident in 2012 involving future queen Kate Middleton. After radio deejays hoaxed a hospital where Middleton was a patient, a nurse inadvertently involved with the prank died by suicide, creating a global sensation. This study examines how the British press and public reacted to this breach of media ethics. Although some in the press condemned the incident, victim-blaming illustrated an evasion of responsibility when it comes to media and the royal family. The public, via letters to the editor, tended to take a firmer stance and were more apt to contextualize the hoax against a history of invasive media coverage. Overall, this study suggests the British press remains wedded to historical strategies of distancing and victim-blaming, providing little optimism about how the relationship between the press and the royal family might change.

PODCASTING ,MASS media ethics ,LOCAL mass media ,ETHICS ,MANUFACTURING processes - Abstract
In New Zealand – like in the US and UK – independently produced podcasts fall outside of local media regulations. New Zealand's media laws and regulatory bodies remain broadcast and legacy media-focussed, so podcast content that has not been previously broadcast is not regulated or otherwise overseen. In the absence of regulation, this study explores the ways nine independent podcast producers from New Zealand self-govern their content, as well as their motivations for doing so. It is an investigation of the ways 'amateur' content producers approach media ethics, and more broadly podcast production in practice. Not guided or bound by formal publishing or editorial responsibilities, and mostly with no formal media training, study participants demonstrate adherence to journalistic principles. They consider ethical and editorial quandaries as they arise during the production process, factoring in the needs and disposition of their audience. This process is informed by their worldview, as well as their perspectives and experiences as media consumers. Though these podcasters champion the ethos of independent podcasting, the content of their shows is not free from third party influence. These podcasters are also parents, partners, employees, and colleagues; life roles that inform the content of their show. Though they push back against podcasting being legislated, these podcasters see value in creating an informal set of guidelines or a voluntary code of practice for podcasting in New Zealand. This project contributes to ongoing explorations of independent podcasting and podcasting practice, focussing on what defines, motivates, and informs self-driven practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proposed study examines the complex and multifaceted communication process, as well as the role of the media in shaping public perception, values, and beliefs. Recognizing the power and responsibility of the mass media for percepting the environment, emphasizing the importance of media literacy and critical thinking of information consumers, we propose to comprehend the key functional of specialists who dramatically influence the media landscape development, agenda molding, as well as "information bubbles" creating that can be as favorable for the further development of the society, as inhibiting it. In our opinion guidekeepers, spin-doctors and news-ombudsmen play the key roles among communication specialists. They influence not only the control and filters of the content broadcast, but also the formation of moral principles of media workers in general and the creation of professional ethical codes. Considering, that modern media platforms serve as the means of spreading social, political, cultural ideas, as well as public discourse of various orientations, it is worth actualizing functions of the media (both individual representatives and platforms in general) such as: conscious design and dissemination of information; management of public perception in order to prevent political and economic crises; ensuring honesty, accountability and transparency between the public and representatives of the media community. Particularly these functions the mentioned media persons are able to provide, as despite the different contextual bases, they all play an important role in the process, management and development of ethical principles of communication. A major challenge of media ethics nowadays is to make a selection of ethical standards applicable to this field, a reassessment of media ethics to keep some of the ethical principles valid and to eliminate or replace the outdated ones. Some principles, such as the respect for truth, are valid regardless of the media. However, one of the most common problems nowadays is that journalists in the mainstream media pick up rumours and fake news from social networks without proper verification. Public journalism is a valuable source of information or images, especially in cases where professional journalists have little or no access to information, but it is also criticized for ignoring ethical standards.
