Many experimental and numerical studies were devoted to the electric discharge of air, and some mathematical models were proposed for the critical breakdown voltage. As this latter depends on several parameters, it is difficult to find a formula, theoretical or experimental, which considers many factors. The aim of this paper is to model the critical breakdown voltage in a "Sphere-Sphere� electrodes system by using the methodology of experimental designs. Several factors were considered, such as geometrical factors (inter-electrodes interval, diameter of the electrodes) and climatic factors (temperature, humidity). Two factorial centred faces experimental designs (CCF) were carried out, a first one for the geometrical factors and a second one for the climatic factors. The obtained results made it possible to propose mathematical models and to study the interactions between the various factors.

The aim of this paper is to study the dynamic behaviour of a plant constituted by an electrical power system and a gas discharge lamp, this latter, increasingly used in street lighting, remains a nonlinear load element. Various approaches are used to represent it, one is the approximation of the discharge represented by a hot "channel", which verifies the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium [LTE] or the polynomial form of the conductance variation. A calculation procedure, based on "channel" approximation of the high pressure mercury (HPM) gas-discharge lamp, is developed to determine the physical and electric magnitudes, which characterize the dynamic behavior of the couple "lamp-electrical power system". The evolution of the lamp properties when principal parameters of the discharge (pressure of mercury, voltage supply, frequency) are varying were studied and analyzed. We show the concordance between simulation, calculations and measurements for electric, energetic or irradiative characteristics. The model reproduces well the evolution of properties of the supply when principal parameters of the discharge vary.

The main objective of this work is the design, manufacture and functional validation of a tribo-electrostatic separator for granular mixtures, equipped with a grounded metal-belt conveyor electrode. Triboelectric charging of the materials was done using a rotary tubular device. The separation experiments were performed on a granular mixture composed of three different plastic materials polycarbonate, high-density polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride. The particles previously charged were deposited on the metal-belt conveyor that carried them through the separation region. The results obtained have shown the efficiency of this installation, which is useful for the treatment of mixtures composed of three different plastic materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work is to highlight the peculiarities of the continuous operating regime of a new tribo-aero-electrostatic separator for the recycling of plastics contained in micronized waste electrical and electronic equipment. The experiments were carried out with an ABS/PS mixture. The particles are charged by triboelectric effect in a fluidized bed in the presence of an electric field created between two disk electrodes connected to high voltage supplies of opposite polarities. The installation described in this paper has several control variables: the high voltage, the mass of the mixture initially introduced into the fluidized bed, the flow of fluidizing air and the rotation speed of the disk electrodes. The influence of each control variable of the machine on the efficiency of the separation was studied by simultaneously and continuously measuring the mass and the electrical charge of the collected products. The variability of the quantity and purity of the recovered materials is a serious drawback for the application of electrostatic separation technologies to the recycling of granular wastes. In a series of previous articles we have pointed out how capability and classic control chart concepts could be employed for better mastering the outcome of such processes. In the present work, the multiple exponentially weighted moving average (MEWMA) control chart is introduced and shown to be more effective than the Hotelling T2 chart for monitoring slow varying changes in the electrostatic separation of granular mixtures originating from electric and electronic equipment waste. The operation of the industrial process was simulated by using a laboratory roll-type electrostatic separator and granular samples resulting from shredded electric cable wastes. The 25 tests carried out during the observation phase enabled the calculation of the upper and lower control limits for the two control charts considered in the present study. The 11 additional tests that simulated the monitoring phase pointed out that the MEWMA chart is more effective than Hotelling's T(2) chart in detecting slow varying changes in the outcome of a process. As the reverse is true in the case of abrupt alterations of monitored process performances, simultaneous usage of the two control charts is strongly recommended. While this study focused on a specific electrostatic separation process, using the MEWMA chart together with the well known Hotelling's T(2) chart should be applicable to the statistical control of other complex processes in the field of waste processing.

Electrostatic separation is a generic term given to a significant class of technologies of industrial waste processing, widely used for the sorting of granular mixtures due to electric forces acting on particles whose average size is approximately 5mm. The focus of this paper is on three electrostatic processes of separation used for processing of different types of mixtures: (i) role-type electrostatic separator, used to sort mixtures containing metal/plastic particles (copper/PVC for example); (ii) plate-type electrostatic separator, used to sort mixtures containing metal/metal particles (copper/lead for example) and (iii) free-fall electrostatic separator, used to sort mixtures of plastic/plastic particles (PVC/PE for example). Experiments carried out on industrial samples using laboratory electrostatic separators confirm the efficiency of these processes and show that the processes can improve the recovery and purity of products resulting from industrial wastes.
