Objective: Two commonly used statistics in meta-analysis are the sample mean and standard deviation. However, in recent years, instead of directly specifying the sample mean and standard deviation, the studies are reporting median, first and third quartiles, minimum and maximum statistics. This study aims to introduce and compare methods of converting to mean and standard deviation so that researchers can benefit from the descriptive statistics reported in this way. Material and Methods: Under two main scenarios, the transformation methods were examined for the age variable in studies addressing the psychiatric and neuropsychiatric consequences of the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic. The median, first, and third quartiles, minimum and maximum statistics reported in the studies considered for meta-analysis transformed to mean and to standard deviation based on the Hozo, Wan, and Luo proposed methods. With appropriate transformation methods mean and standard deviation were obtained, and the meta-analysis was applied to determine the mean age. In addition, transformation methods were compared. Results: Of the 10 studies examined for age, 5 were reported as mean and standard deviation values, 4 as median and the difference between quartiles and 1 as mean and range (minimum-maximum). While the Hozo method transformed only one study, Wan and Luo's methods transformed all 5 studies to mean and standard deviation. Thus, it is seen that it increased the number of studies included in the meta-analysis from 5 to 10 and the sample size from 543 to 1,106. Conclusion: The increase in the number of studies provides more precise estimates by increasing both the information and the sample size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
