This paper proposes a novel hybrid AC/DC microgrid architecture incorporating a central energy storage system (ESS) for both the AC and the DC sub-grids. To ensure effective operation of the proposed hybrid AC/DC microgrid architecture, a coordinated control strategy between the central ESS and the inter-linking converter (ILC) is proposed in the paper. The proposed central ESS provides voltage and frequency control to the AC sub-grid by measuring voltage and frequency at the point of common coupling (PCC) of the AC sub-grid, while providing DC voltage support to the DC sub-grid by measuring DC sub-grid’s PCC voltage. Furthermore, per-unit frequency and the DC sub-grid PCC voltage are utilized to transfer power between the two sub-grids via the ILC. Therefore, two control strategies are coordinating with each other and maintain stable operation. The central ESS eliminates the use of multiple ILCs and complex control schemes for charge and discharge control to maintain same state of charge levels at each ESS. Oscillatory stability has received immense attention in recent years due to the significant increase in power electronic converter (PEC)-interfaced renewable energy sources. Synchrophasor technology offers superior capability to measure and monitor power systems in real time, and power system operators require better understanding of how it can be used to effectively analyze and control oscillations. This article reviews state-of-the-art oscillatory stability monitoring, analysis, and control techniques reported in the published literature based on synchrophasor technology. An updated classification is presented for power system oscillations with a special emphasis on oscillations induced from PEC-interfaced renewable energy generation. Oscillatory stability analysis techniques based on synchrophasor technology are well established in power system engineering, but further research is required to effectively utilize synchrophasor-based oscillatory stability monitoring, analysis, and control techniques to characterize and mitigate PEC-induced oscillations. In particular, emerging big data analytics techniques could be used on synchrophasor data streams to develop oscillatory stability monitoring, analysis, and damping techniques. The first swing rotor angle stability is still an important stability challenge for modern power systems integrated with a large number of renewable energy-based sources, such as wind farms and solar-photovoltaic farms. Therefore, innovative strategies must be developed to exploit the full potential of doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) to improve the first swing rotor angle stability in the system. This study presents a new active power logic (APL) controller for DFIGs which can reduce the active power during the fault and slowly recover it after the fault to allow synchronous generators to increase the electrical power during and after the fault; thus, enabling synchronous generators to improve the first swing rotor angle stability. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme is investigated via theoretical analysis and simulation studies. The reliability and voltage stability test system is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for local and remote faults and increased DFIG penetration conditions. The microgrid concept has gained enormous popularity in the power industry due to recent advances in the power electronic converter (PEC) technology and environmental concerns over green-house gas emissions from power generation. Among microgrids, the hybrid AC/DC microgrid concept has been promoted as a viable concept to reduce energy conversion losses. Synchrophasors are an emerging power system wide-area dynamic performance monitoring and control technology. The IEEE standard C37.118.1 outlines specifications for the construction of synchrophasor units, in which two reference synchrophasor models are proposed for protection (P-type) and measurement (M-type) purposes. This paper develops improved synchrophasor models for power system dynamic stability/performance evaluation based on the reference architecture proposed in the IEEE standard C37.118.1, considering frequency error (FE) and the total vector error (TVE) as the main performance indices. The quadrature demodulation filters are designed explicitly considering the impact of harmonic distortion and out-of-band interference, and thus optimized quadrature demodulation filters improve estimation performance during adverse conditions. Furthermore, a special emphasis is placed on the input low-pass filter to attenuate high-frequency components above the Nyquist rate. The improved synchrophasor models are rigorously tested to ensure compliance with performance requirements stipulated in the IEEE standard. Due to reduction in power system inertia and frequency regulation reserve with high penetration of power-electronic converter (PEC) interfaced renewable sources, advanced control strategies must be developed to exploit the full potential of solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems to improve the frequency stability. In this paper, a new frequency regulation approach is proposed based on reactive-power control (i.e., frequency regulation via reactive-power control (FRQC) scheme) for solar-PV systems, which manipulates the active power demand as a function of the system frequency deviation by varying network voltages via reactive power control. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme is investigated using both theoretical analysis and simulation studies following a loss of a major generation source. Frequency and voltage deadbands, and time delays are added to the FRQC scheme to activate and deactivate the control scheme, and hence it maximises the frequency support without affecting the voltage stability. The reliability and voltage stability (RVS) test system is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed FRQC scheme under different gains of the controller, PV loading levels, and different PV penetration levels. High voltage direct current (HVDC) networks are transforming ac power grids to hybrid ac/dc power grids; hence hybrid ac/dc power grids are facing new stability challenges. In this paper, a decentralised control scheme based on model predictive control (MPC) is proposed to enhance the stability of hybrid ac/dc power grids under disturbances. The proposed scheme controls the dc voltage, frequency, active and reactive power simultaneously with minimum deviations from steady-state values. A communication network is used to share the sampled grid data with the local MPC of each voltage source converter (VSC). Hence, the central controller can be avoided. Moreover, the active power-sharing between converters can be pre-designed. Thus, fast and accurate active power control can be realised. Finally, the proposed control scheme is validated using a five-terminal VSC HVDC test system with MATLAB. The VSC HVDC network with the proposed control scheme shows a smaller deviation and a faster response compared with the conventional droop control scheme and centralised MPC scheme under small disturbances. Under large power variations, the proposed control scheme assists to reach the steady-state rapidly with a minimum impact on the entire power grid. While gas turbines are popular in power networks due to reduced emissions and economical operation, their frequency response characteristics are substantially different from other conventional generation technologies; hence, gas turbine dynamics may influence system stability during significant frequency excursions. This study characterizes the impact of gas turbine combustor lean blowout (LBO) while considering large frequency excursions and, in particular, during short-circuit faults. Studies have shown that combined-cycle gas turbines are more vulnerable to an LBO condition during short-circuit events when they operate at rated power output. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out against a number of factors influencing the LBO, revealing that generator loading and rate-of-change-of-frequency are the main contributing factors for the LBO. Majority of the wind power resources are typically sited at remote locations in power networks and generated power is transmitted through rural transmission corridors to load centres. With increased penetration level of the wind generation there is an increased requirement to provide ancillary services from distributed wind power resources, hence they are operated under different control strategies to provide ancillary services to the network. The control strategies and capability characteristics will significant impact on voltage fluctuations in distribution networks. This paper presents a comparative analysis between different wind generator control strategies (i.e. power factor control strategy, voltage control strategy and reactive power dispatch strategy) on network voltage fluctuations during variable wind conditions while considering extended reactive power capability (i.e. with both generator and power electronic converter reactive power capabilities) for the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). Voltage fluctuations are analysed using real wind data measured at a DFIG based wind farm, and the wind farm model was verified against real measurements. Study has shown that voltage fluctuations are exacerbated when wind generator is at mode transition (i.e. from power optimisation mode to power limitation mode). A sensitivity analysis has shown that voltage fluctuations are exacerbated due to the limitations of the reactive power capability of the DFIG, and the operating point of the DFIG power curve irrespective of the control strategy implemented at the wind generator. Furthermore, a mitigation strategy was developed as an integrated control scheme to the main control scheme in order to reduce voltage fluctuations due to wind power variations. Gas turbines inherently depict unique frequency response characteristics compared with other conventional synchronous generation technologies as their active power output is not entirely determined by the governor response during frequency deviations of the power network. Thus, gas turbine dynamics significantly influence on system stability during frequency events in power networks. Power system and power plant operators require improved understanding of the gas turbine characteristics during various frequency events in order to mitigate adverse impact on power system. Therefore a comparative analysis has been performed between combined‐cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) and open‐cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) in order to characterise the dynamic behaviour considering different types of frequency events in power networks. Study has shown that CCGTs result in significant frequency variations in power networks in comparison with OCGTs because of the temperature control action performed by the fast acting inlet guide vanes at the combustor. In particular, they are susceptible to lean blowout during large frequency increase events such as short‐circuit faults in power networks. Furthermore, a case study was developed based on the New England‐39 bus system in order to illustrate the impact of gas turbine dynamics on network frequency during short‐circuit events in power networks. Remote area power supply (RAPS) systems are being used for many years to supply power to rural or remote communities where the utility grid is not accessible. In order to avoid the high operating cost and environmental impact caused by conventional generators, renewable energy resources are currently being utilised in RAPS systems. However, the intermittency of such renewable energy resources greatly impacts on planning and operation of RAPS systems. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review with regard to the RAPS system planning and operation techniques published in the literature. This paper summarises different modelling approaches associated with the RAPS system architectures, pre-feasibility studies for energy potential analysis, component modelling, unit size optimisation approaches, and system control aspects. In addition, technical challenges associated with RAPS systems, such as system sizing, voltage and frequency control and coordination of different system components are also highlighted in the paper. The design and operation of performant and safe electric vehicles depend on precise knowledge of the behavior of their electrochemical energy storage systems. The performance of the battery management systems often relies on the discrete-time battery models, which can correctly emulate the battery characteristics. Among the available methods, electric circuit-based equations have shown to be especially useful in describing the electrical characteristics of batteries. To overcome the existing drawbacks, such as discrete-time simulations for parameter estimation and the usage of look-up tables, a set of equations has been developed in this study that solely relies on the open-circuit voltage and the internal resistance of a battery. The parameters can be obtained from typical cell datasheets or can be easily extracted via standard measurements. The proposed equations allow for the direct analytical determination of available discharge capacity and the available energy content depending on the discharge current, as well as the Peukert exponent. The fidelity of the proposed system was validated experimentally using 18650 NMC and LFP lithium-ion cells, and the results are in close agreement with the datasheet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since some countries (e.g., China) require distributed wind power to be consumed within sub-transmission level, the distributed wind power capacity should be planned carefully while ensuring the entire distributed generation capacity is consumed within the network. Authors have developed a load and wind power prediction model based on the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model, and subsequently, variable-structure copula models are established based on different time segment strategies to correlate the wind power and load. Control techniques, such as virtual/emulated inertia and damping controls, could be developed to address these stability issues, and additional devices, such as energy storage systems, can also be deployed to mitigate the adverse impact of high wind power generation on various system stability problems. The energy sector is currently undergoing a rapid transformation with the integration of power electronic converter (PEC)-interfaced renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, at both the transmission and distribution networks. Power system stability has been significantly influenced by this power grid transformation. This paper comprehensively reviews major power system stability issues affected due to large-scale integration of PEC-interfaced RES in power grids, with some example case studies relevant for each stability category. According to the review, stability issues are mainly originating from reduction in synchronous inertia, reduction in reactive power reserve, low short-circuit strength of the power network, and fault ride-through (FRT) strategy/capability of the PEC-interfaced RES. Decrease in synchronous inertia could affect both the rotor angle stability and the frequency stability, while decrease in short-circuit strength and reactive power reserve could cause voltage stability and rotor angle stability issues in power networks. Sub-synchronous control interactions are also receiving a lot of attention by the power industry due to increasing oscillatory stability incidents reported in power networks with PEC-interfaced RES. FRT capabilities/strategies of PEC-interfaced RES are also playing a pivotal role in power grid stability due to its influence on active and reactive power, hence more emphasis should be placed on FRT schemes of PEC-interfaced RES, since future power grids are expected to operate with 100% PEC-interfaced generation sources. Stability improvement strategies could be implemented to address multiple stability issues in PEC-interfaced power networks; however, rigorous stability studies are required to identify the optimal conditions to implement these improvement strategies. Furthermore, ongoing structural changes in power grids to accommodate remotely sited PEC-interfaced RES are also influencing the stability of power grids. Synchrophasor devices (i.e., phasor measurement units (PMUs)) are procured from different vendors to construct the wide-area measurment systems (WAMSs), and hence the PMUs from different vendors may be based on different synchrophasor estimation algorithms (SEAs). Although all synchrophasor devices comply with the IEEE synchrophasor standard, stability assessment using the phasor estimated via different synchrophasor device types may lead to different stability assessment outcomes. This paper investigates the effect of SEAs on real-time voltage stability evaluation. Three prominent synchrophasor algorithms, namely quadrature demodulation (QD), discrete Fourier transform (DFT), and phasor locked loop (PLL) algorithms are considered in this study. Real-time voltage stability was assessed using an enhanced Lyapunov exponent based algorithm. Enhancements to the Lyapunov exponent based real-time voltage stability assessment algorithm are proposed while considering practical implications. The New England (NE) 39 bus system is used as the test system, and PMUs are placed in the test system to achieve optimal observability by using an optimal PMU placement (OPP) algorithm. Simulation results show that each SEA detects the instability condition under different time-frames, while some SEAs could make false alarms under certain dynamic conditions. Therefore, the impact of PEC-interfaced RESs on power system stability must be thoroughly examined. This paper comprehensively investigates the long-term voltage stability (LTVS) phenomenon with large-scale solar-photovoltaic (PV) generation. The reactive power characteristics and control schemes of the synchronous generator (SG) and solar-PV system are carefully analysed, as these characteristics significantly affect the voltage stability. First, the LTVS phenomenon is analysed using a simple test system. Time-domain simulations and dynamic reactive power-voltage (QV) curves at critical time-domain snapshots have been used to analyse the trajectory of the system operating point. Moreover, important parameters of the solar-PV system, such as the inverter rating, current limiting strategies, and reactive power gain are also thoroughly examined to characterize their impact on LTVS. The effect of variation in solar-irradiance and ambient temperature on LTVS is also studied in the paper. Finally, the effect of the solar-PV generation on LTVS is investigated using the Nordic test system. This study has shown that solar-PV systems with improved controllers could provide enhanced dynamic reactive power response, hence improve the LTVS. However, large-scale solar-PV systems have both beneficial and adverse impact on stressed power systems, and the nature of the impact depends on the relative loading level of the replaced over excitation limiter (OEL) activated SGs. This paper presents a probabilistic approach for modeling uncertain system parameters with their inherent correlations. The proposed approach is validated through various aspects of system voltage measures, including voltage profile and static and dynamic voltage stability. In total, nine alternative sampling generation techniques are employed, and their accuracy is measured based on real-world data using root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) criteria. The result suggests that multivariate (Gaussian and Student's) copula techniques accurately represent the real system data, consistently achieving high accuracy rates of 98 % for voltage profiles, 97 % for static voltage stability, and 93 % for dynamic voltage stability. New power system control methodologies have recently been proposed that combine economic dispatch (ED) and automatic generation control (AGC) in order to maintain economic operation when the generation mix incorporates a high penetration of renewable energy sources. The theoretical framework that underpins these techniques assumes that an aggregated control area (CA) model can be defined, assuming that the dynamic response of the entire CA is dominated by a single energy source, typically a steam-turbine generator. This paper investigates a combined AGC and ED control methodology for a power system with CAs containing multiple hybrid energy resources that cannot be simply aggregated into a single equivalent source. An optimization approach is then used to develop a control law and parameter design algorithm for each energy source, which accounts for their individual dynamics while aggregating the generators output to match with the target output of the CA. The performance of the proposed AGC and ED controller is demonstrated using simulation studies of an interconnected power system, conducted within the DIgSILENT power factory platform. This model incorporates non-linear network system dynamics and control loops within automatic voltage regulators and power system stabilizers. The study results indicate that the proposed AGC optimal control strategy offers superior performance compared to traditional and recently published economic AGC strategies, particularly when the generation mix includes both dispatchable conventional sources and a high penetration of non-dispatchable or semi-dispatchable sources such as wind. It is projected that the electric vehicle will become a dominant method of transportation within future road infrastructure. Moreover, the electric vehicle is expected to form an additional role in power systems in terms of electrical storage and load balancing. This paper considers the latter role of the electric vehicle and its impact on the steady-state stability of power systems, particularly in the context of large-scale electric vehicle integration. The paper establishes a model framework which examines four major issues: electric vehicle capacity forecasting; optimization of an object function; electric vehicle station siting and sizing; and steady-state stability. A numerical study has been included which uses projected United Kingdom 2020 power system data with results which indicate that the electric vehicle capacity forecasting model proposed in this paper is effective to describe electric vehicle charging and discharging profiles. The proposed model is used to establish criteria for electric vehicle station siting and sizing and to determine steady-state stability using a real model of a small-scale city power system. With the advancements of the battery energy storage systems (BESSs), reduction of their manufacturing costs and government subsidies, the BESS uptake is likely to increase rapidly in power distribution networks. This paper investigates the effects of residential BESSs on low-voltage (LV) networks using the actual household load profiles equipped with BESS and solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems. The electricity consumption data collected via smart meters (2200 households with PV/BESS, 1950 households with PV only and 1000 households without a PV or a BESS) at different solar-PV penetration levels and network types are used to simulate real network operating scenarios. A real LV distribution network in Australia is analysed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory under different scenarios, such as, customers with and without a solar-PV/BESS, with a solar-PV but without a BESS, and without a solar-PV, by using both the power flow and quasi-dynamic simulation studies under balanced and the unbalanced network loading conditions. According to the study, customers experience large voltage excursions from solar-PV power exports, which could be resolved by the household BESS, provided that the BESS charging is coordinated with the solar-PV production. Moreover, quasi-dynamic simulation shows that the BESS could reduce the violation of the over-voltage limit during the solar peak hours (midday) by lowering the worst-case feeder voltage by 3%. Finally, extreme-event (high solar PV generation scenario) simulation shows that the implementation of the BESS controller to facilitate charging BESS during afternoon solar-PV export may reduce the negative grid impact and will assist to avoid network upgrades. With the growing pressure to substitute fossil fuel-based generation, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have become one of the main solutions from the power sector in the fight against climate change. Offshore wind farms, for example, are an interesting alternative to increase renewable power production, but they represent a challenge when being interconnected to the grid, since new installations are being pushed further off the coast due to noise and visual pollution restrictions. In this context, Multi-Terminal High Voltage Direct Current (MT-HVDC) networks are the most preferred technology for this purpose and for onshore grid reinforcements. They also enable the delivery of power from the shore to offshore Oil and Gas (O&G) production platforms, which can help lower the emissions in the transition away from fossil fuels. In this work, we review relevant aspects of the operation and control of MT-HVDC networks for wind power integration. The review approaches topics such as the main characteristics of MT-HVDC projects under discussion/commissioned around the world, rising challenges in the control and the operation of MT-HVDC networks and the modeling and the control of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) stations. To illustrate the challenges on designing the control system of a MT-HVDC network and to corroborate the technical discussions, a simulation of a three-terminal MT-HVDC network integrating wind power generation and offshore O&G production units to the onshore grid is performed in Matlab's Simscape Electrical toolbox. Due to the presence of a power electronic converter, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind generators are isolated from grid frequency variations, which will impose significant burden on conventional generators to regulate frequency in a hybrid remote area power supply (RAPS) system. Thus, participation of wind generators in frequency control is increasingly demanded. In this paper, a primary frequency response strategy is proposed for the DFIG to regulate the RAPS system frequency. A droop control loop without conventionally used high-pass filter is integrated to generate the torque reference for the DFIG to provide primary frequency response, and a supplementary control loop is proposed to enhance the primary frequency response with torque feedback control. Furthermore, the suggested suboptimal power point tracking strategy is capable of reserving wind power to improve the frequency response. The proposed strategy enables DFIG to participate in RAPS system frequency regulation while alleviating high rate of change of power and thus stress on the diesel generators under highly variable load demand. Recently published International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) technical reports IEC 61000-3-13 provides detailed methodologies for managing voltage unbalance (VU) in electric power systems. A key aspect in the VU emission allocation process is the estimation of VU propagation in different parts of the network. Although the VU propagation from upstream networks to downstream networks is adequately addressed, the attenuation of VU when propagating from downstream to upstream networks at the same voltage level has not been properly taken into account in the aforementioned methodologies. Furthermore, mains connected three-phase induction motors are known to attenuate VU, and there is no methodology currently available to quantify the attenuation provided by such motors. The main motivation behind the current research is to investigate the VU propagation and attenuation in radial distribution networks and to quantify the attenuation provided by induction motor loads. This paper reports that the VU propagation from downstream to upstream in a radial distribution network with symmetrical distribution lines can be conservatively approximated by the ratio of fault levels of upstream and downstream network. Moreover, an influence coefficient has been introduced as a means of appraising the impact of induction motor loads. The theoretical work presented is verified using unbalanced load flow analysis. • Eight probability distributions have been implemented in this study to accurately model wind speed datasets with different characteristics. • An approach to identify the best PDF for a wind speed dataset considering its characteristics (i.e. high or low wind speed). • Verification of the best-suited PDFs (Gamma and Weibull distributions for low and high wind speed, respectively) via voltage profile analysis of a test power network, • P-V curve and Q-V curve analysis to determine how the system loadability and distribution of the voltage collapse points are affected by the characteristic (and subsequent PDFs) of the wind speed dataset. Wind speed characteristics may have a significant impact on the power system operation, stability and dynamics. Hence, appropriate modelling and quantification of wind probability distribution function (PDF) are critical for probabilistic power system analysis. Weibull distribution is the most widely used PDF for power system (particularly power system stability) studies, which might not be a valid PDF for different wind regimes having high, average, and low wind speed data. In this study, twenty different wind speed datasets (each dataset is different based on the location, duration, and resolution) have been collected and analysed with eight PDFs to model the wind speed to replicate different wind speed characteristics. The PDFs include Rayleigh, Weibull, Gamma, Lognormal, Normal, Inverse Gaussian, Generalized Extreme Value, and Exponential distributions. Root mean square error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2) are applied as the measure of accuracy. The obtained results show that the locations, duration, and resolution have a notable impact on the selection of suitable PDFs. It was found that the Gamma distribution is the best-suited PDF for representing low wind speed data. In comparison, the Weibull distribution represents the best PDF for high wind speed data. Also, the selection of the Gamma PDF for low wind speed data and Weibull distribution for high wind speed data is further validated by presenting voltage profile and voltage stability analysis. Study outcomes would assist power system planners to select the appropriate PDF for power system stability studies based on the characteristics of the available wind speed dataset. The move towards a greener energy mix to fight climate change propels investments in converter-interfaced resources such as wind and photovoltaics, energy storage systems and electric vehicles. Ongoing research in the fields of power electronics, power systems and control aims at developing control strategies that will help the energy transition to occur, while keeping a stable, secure and reliable power system. The objective of this paper is to present a critical review of the control strategies developed for grid-connected power converters found in renewable energy systems, energy storage systems and electric vehicles. Advanced metering infrastructure has been widely recognized as a key enabling factor for delivering a range of benefits to the electricity industry as well as to energy consumers. The data is commonly used for billing and to educate consumers so they can make economically optimal decisions on choosing between electricity retail plans. More importantly, an in-depth analysis of this data can drive the development and implementation of new energy technologies and to enable evidence-based policy decisions to be made. In this paper, an Australian case study is presented on how residential battery installations lead to behavioral changes in the way energy is consumed. Furthermore, data-informed recommendations to both distribution network operators and policy-makers are also provided. The data comprises more than 5000 energy consumers with either distributed generation systems such as Photovoltaics (PV) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS), or without. The methodology focuses on the analysis of energy consumption of consumers with PV and ESS energy consumers and compares them against consumers without ESS. In addition, an economic analysis on the benefit of installing ESS is presented using payback period and internal rate of return. The main finding is that residential energy storage systems provide a range of benefits to the distribution network. It is recommended that Governments should continue supporting the rollout of such systems by subsidy programs and implementing necessary policy directives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inverter-based generation sources’ significant uptake has seen most power system operators place a strong focus on unlocking their capability to respond to frequency excursions. Consequently, the effective utilization of conventional generation assets to improve frequency regulation in power systems has received less focus. This letter highlights two crucial aspects (governor deadbands and governor inactivity) pertinent to conventional generation assets, which must be considered by the system operator when operating power systems with a high share of inverter-based sources. Poor governor control is shown to significantly impact frequency regulation, thus undermining power system operation and performance, in an Australian case study. Furthermore, a high share of governor inactivity causes power system instability owing to degradation in governor response. For power systems with a high share of inverter-based sources, implementation of properly chosen governor deadbands and mandatory governor response is recommended to improve system frequency regulation. This paper presents a comparative analysis of six sampling techniques to identify an efficient and accurate sampling technique to be applied to probabilistic voltage stability assessment in large-scale power systems. In this study, six different sampling techniques are investigated and compared to each other in terms of their accuracy and efficiency, including Monte Carlo (MC), three versions of Quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC), i.e., Sobol, Halton, and Latin Hypercube, Markov Chain MC (MCMC), and importance sampling (IS) technique, to evaluate their suitability for application with probabilistic voltage stability analysis in large-scale uncertain power systems. The coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) are calculated to measure the accuracy and the efficiency of the sampling techniques compared to each other. All the six sampling techniques provide more than 99% accuracy by producing a large number of wind speed random samples (8760 samples). In terms of efficiency, on the other hand, the three versions of QMC are the most efficient sampling techniques, providing more than 96% accuracy with only a small number of generated samples (150 samples) compared to other techniques. The increasing share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in electricity generation leads to increased uncertainty of generation, frequency and voltage regulation as well as difficulties in energy management. A virtual power plant (VPP), as a combination of dispersed generator units, controllable load and energy storage system (ESS), provides an efficient solution for energy management and scheduling, so as to reduce the cost and network impact caused by the load spikes. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization (MOO) of battery energy storage system (BESS) for VPP applications. A low-voltage (LV) network in Alice Springs (Northern Territory, Australia) is considered as the test network for this study. The BESS for each customer is used to store and release the energy when required to maintain the voltage regulation performance of the LV network and reduce the cost. To optimize the charge/discharge schedule in each battery, a multi-objective optimization tool (MOOT) is developed, where MOO can directly communicate with DIgSILENT PowerFactory platform to perform multi-time scale simulation. MOO mainly focuses on generating a set of trade-off schedule solutions for each customer over 24 h by considering the customer's cost and network impact. Then according to the stakeholder's prior preference, one of the solutions is selected and verified in DIgSILENT PowerFactory with a realistic LV network. We also design several scenarios with different penetrations of photovoltaics (PVs) and batteries to verify how they influence customer's cost and LV network. With the increasing penetrations of PVs and batteries, the experimental results over the selected solution according to the customer preference show that the customers' cost can be largely reduced by maintaining the network voltage regulation performance. • A generalized VPP BESS optimization framework is proposed. • Optimization of BESS in a VPP setting is modeled as an MOO problem. • MOOT facilitates the two-way communication between MOO and DIgSILENT PowerFactory directly without manual operations. • Large PV and battery penetration can largely reduce the customers' cost while maintaining the voltage level. This document is a summary of a report prepared by the IEEE PES Task Force (TF) on Microgrid Stability Definitions, Analysis, and Modeling, IEEE Power and Energy Society, Piscataway, NJ, USA, Tech. Rep. PES-TR66, Apr. 2018, which defines concepts and identifies relevant issues related to stability in microgrids. In this paper, definitions and classification of microgrid stability are presented and discussed, considering pertinent microgrid features such as voltage-frequency dependence, unbalancing, low inertia, and generation intermittency. A few examples are also presented, highlighting some of the stability classes defined in this paper. Frequency support from renewable power generators is critical requirement to ensure the frequency stability of remote area power supply (RAPS) systems with high penetration of renewable power generation. However, traditional control strategies and the stochastic nature of wind resource constrain wind energy conversion system (WECS) such as permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) from participating in frequency regulation. This work proposes to integrate hybrid energy storage including ultracapacitors (UCs) and lead-acid batteries (LABs) into a PMSG to provide frequency support. The UCs deal with fast changing frequency by emulating conventional inertial response, whereas the LABs mimic automatic governor response (i.e., primary frequency response). The mechanical power reserved in wind turbine using suboptimal maximum power point tracking strategy is utilized to restore system frequency (i.e., secondary frequency response). Moreover, supplementary control strategies are proposed to enable the UCs and LABs to assist primary frequency response and secondary frequency response, respectively. Simulation study and experimental test are carried out to validate the effectiveness of frequency response provided by the multilevel energy storage. The multilevel energy storage solution can effectively regulate RAPS system frequency while avoiding abrupt and frequent charging/discharging of the LABs and significant mechanical/electromagnetic stress on the WECS. Semiconductor devices in power electronic converters of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) are susceptible to significant junction temperature variations when operating around synchronous speed, thereby reducing the lifetime of the converters. This is due to the fact that the frequency of the rotor current in a DFIG is determined by the stator flux frequency and rotor speed, and hence will lead to low rotor current frequency when operating closer to the synchronous speed, and ultimately result in significant thermal stress on semiconductor devices. In this paper, a multimode operation control strategy is proposed for the DFIG to prevent operating around the synchronous speed (within a predefined deadband); thus, the proposed control strategy can avoid the thermal stress problem. The proposed strategy engages the existing crowbar scheme for DFIG-based wind energy conversion system to intentionally alter the operating mode of the generator between DFIG and induction generator (IG). Smooth transition between the two operating modes can be achieved with the supplementary control strategies. Unity power factor can also be maintained in both operating modes by using the grid side converter as a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to fulfill the reactive power requirement of the DFIG in IG mode. Inertia emulation methods exist to compensate for the reduced inertial support provided by doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines. Instead of emulating inertia, this paper proposes to temporarily convert DFIGs to synchronous generators, enabling supply of real inertia to the system. In order to achieve this, the voltage supplied to the DFIG rotor needs to be made independent of the grid frequency. Feeding the rotor with a fixed dc voltage while it is rotating at synchronous speed enables the DFIG to operate in synchronism with the grid and couple the inertia of its rotating mass to the power system. The rotor side converter of a DFIG can be controlled to function as the dc voltage source, allowing convenient switching between the two operation modes according to system requirements.
