A combination of physical and chemical processes are used to determine the sole transport in heterogenous soil systems. In this system, a system made of alginate gel beads and two-region transport modeling is used to study transport actions in reactive heterogenous systems. The study is broken down into an introduction, a discussion of the materials and methods used in the experiment, and a discussion of the results.

Abstract

A mechanistic ion adsorption model was combined with a convective dispersive solute transport model to predict multicomponent transport of fluoride at variable pH in a geothite-silica sand column system. The results show that this particular modeling method allows for the simple addition of new substances by simply adding their interaction with the geothite or silica interface.

Abstract

Researchers at Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands performed experiments to estimate the composition and solubility of iron cyanide, or Prussian blue. Their object was to determine iron cyanide's dissolution rate in soil and potential health consequences. Prussian blue is an extremely toxic, biodegradation-resistant soil contaminant commonly found at industrial sites. Experimental procedures and results are described in detail.

Abstract

International audience; Nuclear waste repositories will use a significant quantity of cement: for the construction of accessdrifts, disposal cells and concrete plugs, and as containment material for low- to intermediate-levelwaste. Several European countries have chosen claystone formations as possible host rocks (Landais,2006). Numerous cement/clay interfaces will thus be present in a radioactive-waste repository.Due to contrasting geochemical conditions (including Eh, pH, solution composition), these interfacesare subjected to steep concentration gradients and are highly reactive. Predicting long-term changes(1,000 to 100,000 years) in these cementitious and clayey materials is thus crucial for assessing thebehaviour of such infrastructures. Experiments cannot provide sufficiently reliable information oversuch long time scale. Although natural and archaeological analogues can be very helpful, modelling isthe unique tool to analyse and test different evolution scenarios. In order to build a better confidence insuch calculations, it is of paramount importance to demonstrate that the results obtained are notdependent on the choice of the numerical reactive transport code to perform the simulation. In order toaddress this issue, a benchmark problem, divided into three steps with increasing geochemicalrefinement, has been set up (Marty et al., submitted).In all cases, the solutes transport across the interface between clayey host rock and concrete isdiffusion driven and a 1D radial geometry and isothermal conditions (25°C) have been bothconsidered. Both materials are full saturated. The first step of the benchmark only considers porewatersolutions and the clayed host rock which is only modelled by an exchanger. The second stepintroduces the full mineralogy for both the concrete and the claystone considering slow kinetics ratesfor mineral dissolution-precipitation reactions, whereas the third one focuses on fast reaction rates.Seven international teams have been involved in this benchmarking exercise. All reactive transportcodes used (TOUGHREACT, PHREEQC with two different ways of handling transport,CRUNCHFLOW, HYTEC, ORCHESTRA, MIN3P-THCm) gave very similar patterns in terms ofpredicted solute concentrations and of minerals distribution evolution (Fig. 1). The benchmarkingexercise demonstrates that reactive transport tools have reached such a level of maturity as to beconfidently used in support of long-term performance assessments.

Abstract

The harsh chemical conditions involved in the isolation of fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA) have been identified as a possible contributing factor to the significant mismatch between in situ measurements and model predictions of trace metal speciation in freshwaters, resulting from the use of isolated FA and HA in model calibration. A set of experimental assays were developed to enable Cu binding to DOM to be measured over the full range of [Cu]/[DOC] ratios (~1 - 460 µmol g-1) observed in surface freshwaters. They were applied to the widely used and traditionally isolated Suwannee River HA and FA and to DOM isolated from headwater streams by a mild procedure using minimal chemical treatment. Good agreement was observed between measured free ion activities and those predicted using both WHAM/Model VII and NICA–Donnan speciation models for both traditionally and mildly isolated DOM. Agreement to within a factor of two for WHAM/Model VII contrasts with 100-fold differences previously reported between in situ Cu2+ measurements and model predictions for a wide range of conditions. The results demonstrate that (a) existing speciation models are capable of accurately predicting Cu-humic binding in natural waters at environmentally realistic [Cu]/[DOC] ratios, under equilibrium conditions, and (b) that the isolation procedures traditionally used for HA and FA do not appreciably affect their binding characteristics.
