Floral plantings are promoted to foster ecological intensification of agriculture through provisioning of ecosystem services. However, a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of different floral plantings, their characteristics and consequences for crop yield is lacking. Here we quantified the impacts of flower strips and hedgerows on pest control (18 studies) and pollination services (17 studies) in adjacent crops in North America, Europe and New Zealand. Flower strips, but not hedgerows, enhanced pest control services in adjacent fields by 16% on average. However, effects on crop pollination and yield were more variable. Our synthesis identifies several important drivers of variability in effectiveness of plantings: pollination services declined exponentially with distance from plantings, and perennial and older flower strips with higher flowering plant diversity enhanced pollination more effectively. These findings provide promising pathways to optimise floral plantings to more effectively contribute to ecosystem service delivery and ecological intensification of agriculture in the future., Our quantitative synthesis of the impacts of floral plantings on pest control, crop pollination and yield reveals that flower strips, but not hedgerows, enhanced pest control services in adjacent fields by 16% on average, while effects on crop pollination and yield were more variable. The azalea lace bug, Stephanitis pyrioides, is a serious pest of azaleas and rhododendrons which is often controlled by systemic insecticides. However, the efficacy of softer approaches such as biological control and water sprays against this pest on rhododendrons is unknown. Therefore, we tested the commercially available green lacewing predator, Chrysoperla rufilabris, and water sprays on lace bug infestation in one laboratory and four field trials. First, 2nd instar predator larvae were confirmed to consume lace bug nymphs and sometimes adults. Second, tapping predator larvae from hexcel units over dry leaves of potted rhododendrons and shaking loose eggs over wet leaves were reliable application methods. Third, predator larvae released onto potted rhododendrons lowered lace bug counts for two weeks. Fourth, after four bi-weekly applications, plants receiving egg cards or water-sprays had reduced lace bug counts and fewer damaged leaves than control plants. Fifth, landscape plants receiving the sequential combination of water spray followed by predator egg releases had 44 to 90% lower lace bug abundance and fewer damaged leaves than the control. After lace bugs were initially dislodged, hatching predators might have consumed hatching lace bugs. Drosophila suzukii is widely studied because of its status as a global pest of berries and soft fruits. Environmental conditions and access to food resources impact the physiology and fitness of D. suzukii; these factors could also affect dispersal. Flight mills are a convenient tool for measuring and comparing the flight performance of insects. In this study, two experiments examined the effects of diet and humidity on D. suzukii flight performance using custom-built flight mills, and a third experiment compared the energy reserves of D. suzukii flown or not flown on flight mills. Over all flight assays, the median flight distance and duration were 27.16 m and 2.37 min, respectively, and the mean flight velocity was 0.18 m/s. The maximum flight distance and duration by an individual were 1.75 km and 2.35 h, respectively. Drosophila suzukii provisioned with blossoms, fruits, or standard laboratory diets flew farther distances and longer durations than starved flies. While starvation was associated with reduced flight performance, there were no observed differences between diet types. It remains unclear whether D. suzukii consistently use lipids, glycogen, sugar, or another energy source for flight because tethered individuals may not have flown enough to deplete energy reserves. Humidity did not affect flight performance of D. suzukii within a ~ 2 h test period. These data indicate that most D. suzukii are likely to remain within limited area (e.g., within a field) but that some individuals can disperse long distances (field to field spread).

Biocontrol may play an important role in IPM of D. suzukii, a worldwide fruit crops pest. Predation on D. suzukii has been observed in the field, but rates have not been measured. Additionally, targeting juveniles may be more effective than targeting adults for reducing population sizes. The first objective of this study was to measure naturally-occurring levels of biocontrol on D. suzukii juveniles. Furthermore, D. suzukii may either pupate inside of fruit or emerge to pupate in the soil. Knowing the location of pupae can be important for developing biological and cultural control programs. The second objective of this study was to determine the proportion of D. suzukii pupating in fruit versus soil. Predator exclusion experiments were conducted to measure the ability of natural enemies to reduce D. suzukii larvae in strawberry and blueberry fruits, and pupae in the soil underneath strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry. Funnels were used to direct larvae dropping from infested blueberry and raspberry fruits into soil-filled containers. Significantly fewer D. suzukii larvae were extracted from fruits exposed to predators, representing a reduction in larval survival of 19–49%. Significantly fewer D. suzukii pupae were recovered from soil exposed to predators, representing a 61–91% decrease in pupae. In the pupation behavior experiment, 82–93% of pupae were found in soil, significantly more than were found in fruit. Ants and spiders were commonly observed in a variety of sampling methods, and ants were observed on video to remove pupae from the soil.

Maize stover is beginning to be used as a cellulosic biofuel feedstock in the Midwestern United States; however, there are concerns that stover removal could result in increased soil erosion and loss of soil organic matter. Use of a winter cover crop following maize harvest has the potential to mitigate these impacts and may have additional benefits by providing continuous living cover in annual crop habitats leading to changes in insect predator communities and increased biocontrol services. However, cover crops may also be harvested in cellulosic biofuel systems, adding a disturbance event that may negatively affect biocontrol. We contrasted insect predator communities and their impacts in four potential bioenergy cropping systems in Michigan and Wisconsin (USA) during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Two annual maize systems were harvested for grain and stover; one maize system included a cereal rye/Austrian winter pea cover crop. Two perennial systems, switchgrass and a mixed prairie grasses and forbs, were harvested in the fall for biomass. Predatory insect abundance and diversity were lower in both annual cropping systems than in the perennial cropping systems and the inclusion of the cover crop did not significantly alter these responses. Similarly, removal of sentinel insect egg prey was also lower in the annual versus perennial cropping systems, with no significant influence of cover crop. We also explored the potential for cover crops to harbor prey populations in the spring that might encourage oviposition by mobile predators and potentially lead to local population sources or sinks of predators depending on the timing and effect of cover crop harvest. We found that existing predator communities in the cover crop treatments effectively suppressed aphid population growth, limiting their attractiveness to mobile predators. While we found no significant positive or negative impacts of this cover crop system on biocontrol services, bioenergy cover cropping systems could be managed to increase multiple ecosystem services by altering cover crop identity, or timing of planting and harvest.

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) is an economic pest of small fruits and cherries that attacks intact ripening fruits. Host susceptibility may be influenced by characteristics such as flesh firmness, penetration force of the skin, total soluble solids (TSS, also known as °Brix), and pH. Improved knowledge of factors affecting fruit susceptibility is needed for developing thresholds and risk prediction models for IPM. A combination of laboratory and field studies was conducted to develop prediction and potential management tools. First, a direct bioassay was used to calculate the probability of oviposition in a given fruit based on various characteristics as determined across laboratory and field trials in Oregon and North Carolina, US. When multiple characteristics were evaluated simultaneously, oviposition probability consistently increased as penetration force decreased and pH increased. Oviposition probability sometimes increased as TSS increased. Second, raspberries and blueberries in unsprayed fields had substantially lower infestation in ripening fruit compared to ripe fruit. There was no or minimal infestation in green fruit. Third, given that skin penetration force influences oviposition, practices used to improve fruit quality were examined in laboratory no-choice cages for potential reduction of oviposition. Blueberry fruit sprayed with calcium silicate in the field had greater penetration force and firmness and reduced number of eggs laid by D. suzukii compared to untreated fruit. Other calcium-based treatments increased Ca content and firmness of fruit relative to untreated fruit. Timing of insecticide spray for D. suzukii might be delayed until fruit become susceptible.

Many predatory arthropods are nocturnal, yet the potential contribution of nocturnal predators to biological control is often overlooked. The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, has emerged as a significant pest of soybean in the North Central US. Soybean aphid biological control research has focused on diurnal predators. Here, we used video cameras to continuously monitor soybean plants infested with soybean aphids, compare the diurnal and nocturnal predator communities on those plants, and assess predator activity during different times of day. Different predator communities were observed being active on soybean during day and night. Coccinellids and anthocorids dominated the diurnal predator community, while Opiliones and Araneae dominated the nocturnal predator community. Nocturnal and diurnal predators were recorded being active for similar rates per hour. Future research is needed to clarify the significance of arachnid predators and other nocturnal generalists to soybean aphid biocontrol.

Arthropod natural enemies provide valuable pest suppression in agricultural land- scapes. Natural enemy abundance and diversity within a given crop, in turn, have frequently been shown to be positively related to the amount of semi-natural habi- tat in the landscape. However, other aspects of landscape structure may also influence natural enemy communities and may be more amenable to management. 2 We simultaneously assessed the relationship among several metrics of landscape structure, as well as between these metrics and coccinellid activity in soybean fields. We used partial least squares regression to examine the coccinellid response to landscape structure. 3 Coccinellid activity was lowest in landscapes dominated by annual crops grown in large fields and highest in landscapes dominated by semi-natural habitats such as grasslands and forests, with a higher diversity of crops grown in smaller fields. 4 Landscape characteristics, including composition factors such as the type and amount of different land covers and configuration factors such as the interspersion of these land covers, are often correlated within a set of landscapes. Isolating the effects of individual landscape characteristics on natural enemy communities will be necessary to move forward with the development of management actions that can increase biocontrol services in agroecosystems.

Generalist natural enemies may be well adapted to annual crop systems in which pests and natural enemies re-colonize fields each year. In addition, for patchily-distributed pests, a natural enemy must disperse within a crop field to arrive at infested host patches. As they typically have longer generation times than their prey, theory suggests that generalist natural enemies need high immigration rates to and within fields to effectively suppress pest populations. The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is a pest of an annual crop and is predominantly controlled by coccinellids. To test if rates of coccinellid arrival at aphid-infested patches are crucial for soybean aphid control, we experimentally varied coccinellid immigration to 1 m2 soybean patches using selective barriers and measured effects on A. glycines populations. In a year with low ambient aphid pressure, naturally-occurring levels of coccinellid immigration to host patches were sufficient to suppress aphid populations, while decreasing coccinellid immigration rates resulted in large increases in soybean aphid populations within infested patches. Activity of other predators was low in this year, suggesting that most of the differences in aphid population growth were due to changes in coccinellid immigration. Alternatively, in a year in which alate aphids continually colonized plots, aphid suppression was incomplete and increased activity of other predatory taxa contributed to adult coccinellid predation of A. glycines. Our results suggest that in a system in which natural enemy populations cannot track pest populations through reproduction, immigration of natural enemies to infested patches can compensate and result in pest control.

The sustainability of ecosystem services depends on a firm understanding of both how organisms provide these services to humans and how these organisms will be altered with a changing climate. Unquestionably a dominant feature of most ecosystems, invertebrates affect many ecosystem services and are also highly responsive to climate change. However, there is still a basic lack of understanding of the direct and indirect paths by which invertebrates influence ecosystem services, as well as how climate change will affect those ecosystem services by altering invertebrate populations. This indicates a lack of communication and collaboration among scientists researching ecosystem services and climate change effects on invertebrates, and land managers and researchers from other disciplines, which becomes obvious when systematically reviewing the literature relevant to invertebrates, ecosystem services, and climate change. To address this issue, we review how invertebrates respond to climate change. We then review how invertebrates both positively and negatively influence ecosystem services. Lastly, we provide some critical future directions for research needs, and suggest ways in which managers, scientists and other researchers may collaborate to tackle the complex issue of sustaining invertebrate-mediated services under a changing climate.

Increasing evidence suggests that landscape composition is an important driver of beneficial insect populations and resulting ecosystem services. Additionally, local-scale manipulations such as planting floral strips are used at the field-level to provide resources for beneficial insects to increase their services. It has been proposed that the benefits of local manipulations will depend on the landscape context, with greater benefits in simplified landscapes and smaller benefits in landscapes with an abundance of non-crop resources. To test this, we used soybean aphid, Aphis glycines, and its coccinellid predators as a model system to elucidate the effects of habitat management and landscape on biocontrol services in soybean. We selected pairs of soybean fields in landscapes of varying composition and planted buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum, strips adjacent to one field in each pair. We measured coccinellid abundance and biocontrol in each field. Coccinellid abundance was higher in buckwheat than in control field margins in all landscapes, and coccinellid abundance in soybean was positively related to amount of semi-natural vegetation in the landscape. We found no evidence of an interaction between landscape and local variables, and biocontrol services were high in all contexts. For soybean aphid suppression, landscape factors are the key drivers of predator abundance.

International audience; Numerous studies show that landscape simplification reduces abundance and diversity of natural enemies in agroecosystems, but its effect on natural pest control remains poorly quantified. Further, natural enemy impacts on pest populations have usually been estimated for a limited number of taxa and have not considered interactions among predator species. In a quantitative synthesis with data collected from several cropping systems in Europe and North America, we analyzed how the level and within-field spatial stability of natural pest control services was related to the simplification of the surrounding landscape. All studies used aphids as a model species and exclusion cages to measure aphid pest control. Landscape simplification was quantified by the proportion of cultivated land within a 1 km radius around each plot. We found a consistent negative effect of landscape simplification on the level of natural pest control, despite interactions among enemies. Average level of pest control was 46% lower in homogeneous landscapes dominated by cultivated land, as compared with more complex landscapes. Landscape simplification did not affect the amount of positive or negative interactions among ground-dwelling and vegetation-dwelling predators, or the within-field stability of pest control. Our synthesis demonstrates that agricultural intensification through landscape simplification has negative effects on the level of natural pest control with important implications for management to maintain and enhance ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. Specifically, preserving and restoring semi-natural habitats emerges as a fundamental first step to maintain and enhance pest control services provided by predatory arthropods to agriculture.
