Refugees face significantly worse mental health outcomes compared to the general population within their host country; however, few refugee-specific mental health programs exist within the United States. Utilizing Community-based Participatory Research methods, a community-based mental health intervention named Positive Minds for Refugees (PMR) is in development. In this preliminary study, we shared the in-development intervention with refugees (n = 8), holding a series of 3 focus groups to gain feedback on the intervention content and determine acceptability. Findings suggest that the intervention is generally acceptable and relevant to the refugee community. Mental health for refugees is closely linked with their ability to navigate new social, cultural, and physical environments during resettlement; therefore, to address unmet needs, additional content should be added on: American cultural norms, navigating US society, and coping with social isolation and self-care. This study highlights cultural considerations for presenting written intervention content and implementing sessions.

Research Objectives Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the leading causes of work disability in the United States. Ergonomic interventions offer an individualized treatment approach, and when used in conjunction with pharmacological treatment interventions, may improve work outcomes and improve the overall quality of life for individuals with RA. To identify the current body of evidence regarding the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in reducing work activity limitations in adults with RA. Design A systematic review was conducted to identify articles of ergonomic interventions targeting working adults with RA. The CONsolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) checklist and Non-Pharmacological Treatment (NPT) Extension evaluated the reporting quality of each randomized controlled trial (RCT), and the Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) evaluated the quality of the evidence. Setting N/A. Participants N/A. Interventions N/A. Main Outcome Measures N/A. Results Six studies were identified and reviewed for the quality of their reporting on evidence related to work activity limitations. Sixty-six percent of the items on the CONSORT checklist were fully reported by all studies and analysis through the GRADE framework demonstrated moderate confidence that the reported effects of ergonomic interventions on work activity limitations in the studies are accurate. This review revealed varied results for the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions on work activity limitations and at-work productivity. Conclusions The results of this review indicate a need for further investigation. Future studies should focus on reviewing specific ergonomic interventions to determine the dosage needed to see results in reducing work activity limitations for working adults with RA.

School-based guidelines often require that treatment focuses on minimizing or eliminating stuttered speech. The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits of explicit training in communication competencies to children who stutter without targeting stuttered speech. Thirty-seven children (ages 4–16) completed Camp Dream. Speak. Live., an intensive group treatment program which targets the psychosocial needs and communication of children who stutter. Outcome measures included the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering (OASES), the Communication Attitude Test for Preschool and Kindergarten Children Who Stutter (KiddyCAT), and the Patient Reported Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pediatric Peer Relationships Short Form (PROMIS Peer Relationships) and Parent Proxy Peer Relationships Short Form (PROMIS Parent Proxy). Pre- and posttreatment public presentations were rated on nine core verbal and nonverbal communication competencies by a neutral observer. Similar to previous studies, participants demonstrated significant improvements in communication attitudes (OASES) and perceived ability to establish peer relationships (PROMIS Peer Relationships), particularly school-aged participants (ages 7–16). Participants also demonstrated significant improvement in eight of the nine communication competencies. Findings suggest that, in addition to the psychosocial gains of programs such as Camp Dream. Speak. Live., children who stutter benefit from explicit training in communication skills, and these gains are not dependent on the presence of stuttered speech.

In September 2021, a household cluster of three typhoid cases was investigated by Queensland public health authorities. Through case interviews and molecular typing, the investigation revealed chronic carriage of Salmonella Typhi persisting at least 12 years in the index case. This case report summarises the investigation and highlights the complexity of chronic pathogen carriage in the control and management of typhoid disease. Our findings raise considerations for prevention and treatment guidelines in Australia and demonstrate the beneficial role of molecular typing for complex case investigations.

Effective personal protective equipment (PPE) is critical in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Appropriate test systems and test soils are needed to adequately evaluate PPE. ASTM test method F903, which specifies the test method setup also used in ASTM F1670 and F1671, has been used for decades to test liquid (ASTM F1670) or viral (ASTM F1671) penetration resistance of PPE fabrics. However, an alteration of the bacteriophage propagation method detailed in the standard was necessary to obtain consistent titers of virus. In this study, modification of the nutrient broth provided consistently higher titers of virus and the use of the top agar in smaller increments prevented premature solidification. This study then compared the standard ASTM F1671 (using bacteriophage ϕχ174) with a modified dot-blot method to assess viral penetration of PPE materials. The results indicated that ASTM F1671 and the dot-blot apparatus methods were equivalent. The dot-blot method described here is less labor intensive and faster than the ASTM F1671 method. However, using the dot-blot system, which uses antibodies to detect the bacteriophage and signal amplification, does not indicate if virus viability or infectivity is retained, whereas the ASTM F1671 method indicates both. Nonetheless, the method presented in this investigation is a substantial improvement of a standard method for viral challenge testing of PPE materials.

Pain impacts brain development for neonates, causing deleterious neurodevelopmental outcomes. Prescription opioids for analgesia or sedation are common; however, prolonged opioid exposure in neonates is associated with neurodevelopmental impairment. Balancing the impact of inadequate pain control against prolonged opioid exposure in neonates is a clinical paradox. Therefore, we sought to decrease the average days of opioids used for analgesia or sedation in critically ill neonates at a level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by 10% within 1 year.A multidisciplinary quality improvement team used the model for improvement, beginning with a Pareto analysis, and identified a lack of consistent approach to weaning opioids as a primary driver for prolonged exposure. The team utilized 2 main interventions: (1) a standardized withdrawal assessment tool-1 and (2) a risk-stratified opioid weaning guideline.We demonstrated a reduction in mean opioid duration from 34.3 to 14.1 days, an increase in nursing withdrawal assessment tool-1 documentation from 20% to 90%, and an increase in the documented rationale for daily opioid dose in provider notes from 20% to 70%. Benzodiazepine use did not change.Standardized withdrawal assessments combined with risk-stratified weaning guidelines can decrease opioid use in critically ill neonates.

This trauma quiz represents an interactive session where POSNA members are able to work through 9 clinical scenarios to challenge how they would address these problems. Associated with each scenario is an OITE-style question and multiple choice options that seek the most preferred answer from the clinician. In addition to the answer and follow-up radiographs, we have enlisted the opinions of some POSNA experts in trauma to provide an evidenced-based approach to thinking through each trauma problem.

Background The advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has generated varying opinions toward adhering to safety protocols among public health experts. With decreasing restrictions on public gatherings, lax protective behaviors, distortion of facts, and increasing availability of COVID-19 vaccines, response to public health guidelines vary greatly. Personal experiences with COVID-19, education, and work environment may influence decisions on safety recommendations and vaccination protocols among the public and healthcare professionals alike. To better understand how individuals process and make decisions regarding COVID-19 safety measures, this study investigated the attitudes among clinical and non-clinical healthcare workers and non-healthcare workers toward COVID-19 safety protocols. Methodology Cross-sectional data were collected from Florida residents using an online, 20-item anonymous questionnaire. Participants were recruited using the Florida Department of Health database for physician emails, social media, and snowball sampling strategies. The survey consisted of demographic items and questions regarding patient attitudes toward safety protocols for COVID-19 (e.g., likeliness to wear a mask in public despite state regulations being lifted, maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet between close friends and family, dining at restaurants/bars, gathering in groups larger than 10 people, getting a COVID-19 vaccine if one becomes available). Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and chi-square test using SPSS version 27 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Of the 373 participants who completed the survey, 183 (49.1%) worked in the healthcare field, with 100 (28.6%) providing direct patient care. The rest (n = 190; 50.9%) reported that they do not work in the healthcare industry. Findings suggest that those working in healthcare with direct involvement in patient care were more likely to get the COVID-19 vaccine than those not working in healthcare. Additionally, those working in healthcare and providing direct patient care were more likely to think that masks were effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19 compared to those who worked in healthcare but did not provide direct patient care. Conclusions This study provides new insights into the attitudes of front-line clinicians, non-clinical healthcare workers, and the general population. Increasing health promotion efforts and debunking myths about COVID-19 may prove useful in mitigating the spread of the disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is a need to evaluate the benefit-risk ratio of current therapies in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients to provide the best quality of care. The primary objective of I-CARE (IBD Cancer and serious infections in Europe) was to assess prospectively safety concerns in IBD, with specific focus on the risk of cancer/lymphoma and serious infections in patients treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor and other biologic monotherapy as well as in combination with immunomodulators.METHODS: I-CARE was designed as a European prospective longitudinal observational multicenter cohort study to include patients with a diagnosis of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or IBD unclassified established at least 3 months prior to enrollment.RESULTS: A total of 10,206 patients were enrolled between March 2016 and April 2019, including 6169 (60.4%) patients with Crohn's disease, 3853 (37.8%) with ulcerative colitis, and 184 (1.8%) with a diagnosis of IBD unclassified. Thirty-two percent of patients were receiving azathioprine/thiopurines, 4.6% 6-mercaptopurine, and 3.2% methotrexate at study entry. At inclusion, 47.3% of patients were treated with an anti-tumor necrosis factor agent, 8.8% with vedolizumab, and 3.4% with ustekinumab. Roughly one-quarter of patients (26.8%) underwent prior IBD-related surgery. Sixty-six percent of patients had been previously treated with systemic steroids. Three percent of patients had a medical history of cancer prior to inclusion and 1.1% had a history of colonic, esophageal, or uterine cervix high-grade dysplasia.CONCLUSIONS: I-CARE is an ongoing investigator-initiated observational European prospective cohort study that will provide unique information on the long-term benefits and risks of biological therapies in IBD patients. Since its emergence in Wuhan, China, covid-19 has spread and had a profound effect on the lives and health of people around the globe. As of 4 July 2021, more than 183 million confirmed cases of covid-19 had been recorded worldwide, and 3.97 million deaths. Recent evidence has shown that a range of persistent symptoms can remain long after the acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, and this condition is now coined long covid by recognized research institutes. Studies have shown that long covid can affect the whole spectrum of people with covid-19, from those with very mild acute disease to the most severe forms. Like acute covid-19, long covid can involve multiple organs and can affect many systems including, but not limited to, the respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal systems. The symptoms of long covid include fatigue, dyspnea, cardiac abnormalities, cognitive impairment, sleep disturbances, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, muscle pain, concentration problems, and headache. This review summarizes studies of the long term effects of covid-19 in hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients and describes the persistent symptoms they endure. Risk factors for acute covid-19 and long covid and possible therapeutic options are also discussed.

This teaching case introduces the concept of Impact Sourcing, in the context of global IT outsourcing. While IT outsourcing is a well-established management technique, with a history of at least 30 years, Impact Sourcing is a relatively new concept, conceptualized by the Rockefeller Foundation in 2011 and recently defined by the Global Impact Sourcing Coalition. To summarize this case, a First Nations band collaborated with a successful global outsourcing firm, Accenture, to establish Indigena, a Canadian-based impact-sourcing enterprise. Indigena found it difficult to attract, hire and retain qualified Aboriginal employees. The suburban office location in the high-cost Vancouver market may have been a key challenge in building a robust Aboriginal workforce. However, the challenge of winning outsourcing contracts in a competitive market may have been hindered by the Aboriginal workforce, despite the outward positive response of clients to the Impact Sourcing model. Indigena was not able to meet its social goals and at the same time it struggled to attract and retain clients. It was unable to demonstrate profitable business success, resulting in a strategic challenge from its investors.

Small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based therapeutics have the potential to treat a series of hereditary and acquired diseases. However, one serious obstacle for siRNA therapy is the lack of an efficient strategy to transport the siRNA to the targeted organ/cell with minimal toxicity. To take advantage of the good biocompatibility and degradability of natural polymers, and to understand how the peptide sequence affects the properties of the vector, four biomimetic vectors (D10-K3H7, D10-R3H7, D20-K3H7, and D20-R3H7) were designed and synthesized by conjugating the peptide (K3H7 or R3H7) and dextran with a molecular weight of 10 or 20 kDa. Taking the commercial cellular transfection reagent Lipofectime RNAiMAX as a control, dextran-peptide/siRNA complexes exhibited smaller particle sizes, lower ζ potentials, and lower toxicity with the same value of N/P ratio. To evaluate the potential of this system for therapeutics, siRNA targeting the mRNA of the PCSK9 gene was chosen as a gene drug model to knock down the PCSK9 expression in the HepG2 cell line. Dextran-peptide/siRNA complexes exhibit a more consistent and higher knockdown efficiency than Lipofectamine RNAiMAX/PCSK9 siRNA complexes in a medium with 20% fetal bovine serum (FBS). D20-R3H7/PCSK9 siRNA complexes could knock down the level of PCSK9 mRNA by 85.2%, and they demonstrated a higher efficiency than Lipofectamine RNAiMAX, having 70.5% knockdown in the medium with 20% FBS at the PCSK9 siRNA concentration of 100 nM. These results suggest that the dextran-peptide-based vector has more efficient therapeutic agent properties for a siRNA-based drug transporter.

Congenital tibial deficiency is a rare condition characterized by partial to complete absence of the tibia, an intact but frequently overgrown fibula, variable degrees of knee deformity and function, and an abnormal equinovarus foot. It can occur in isolation but also presents concurrently with other orthopaedic anomalies and syndromic conditions. Among these, congenital abnormalities of the hand and femur are most commonly observed. Many theories exist regarding its etiology and some genetic mutations have been identified; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The prognosis and treatment differ based on the clinical severity. The goal of treatment is always to create a stable, functional limb, most commonly with amputation and use of prosthetics. Controversy exists over the level of amputation and the usefulness of reconstructive procedures to preserve the foot and limb length. Current investigation on this complex disorder is focused on identifying its origins and further developing a classification-based treatment algorithm to improve patient outcomes.

Tumor necrosis indicates poor prognoses in many cancers, including glioblastomas (GBMs). Although thought to result from chronic ischemia, the underlying nature and mechanisms driving the involved cell death remain obscured by lack of animal models recapitulating the extent of necrosis in human GBMs. The molecular and clinical heterogeneity of GBMs adds further complexity. Not all GBMs contain necrosis. Mesenchymal (MES)-GBM, the subtype correlated with worst prognosis and highest treatment resistance, is most closely associated with necrosis. MES-GBM exhibits hyperactivity of transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), a Hippo tumor suppressive pathway effector whose expression in human GBMs predicts short survival. To elucidate mechanisms driving GBM necrosis, we devised a novel orthotopic mouse model recapitulating human MES-GBM phenotypically and histopathologically by expressing a constitutively-active TAZ mutant (TAZ4SA) in three human GBM cell lines (LN229, U87, and LN18) lacking MES signatures (GBM4SA). GBM4SA mice lived significantly shorter than mice implanted with GBMvector or mutant TAZ unable to bind its downstream effector, TEAD (GBM4SA-S51A). Extensive (≥30% of tumor volume) necrosis was present in GBM4SA mice but not GBMvector or GBM4SA-S51A. In GBM4SA tumors, neutrophils coincide with necrosis temporally and spatially. Neutrophil depletion dampens necrosis. Neutrophils isolated from mouse tumors killed co-cultured tumor cells. Neutrophils induce iron-dependent accumulation of lipid hydroperoxides within tumor cells by transferring myeloperoxidase-containing granules into tumor cells. Inhibiting myeloperoxidase suppresses neutrophil-induced tumor cytotoxicity. Intratumoral glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) overexpression or acyl-CoA synthetase 4 (ACSL4) depletion diminishes necrosis and aggressiveness of tumors. Human GBM analysis indicates neutrophils and ferroptosis are associated with necrosis and predict poor survival. Together, we propose that certain tumor damage(s) during early tumor progression (i.e. ischemia) recruits neutrophils to damaged tissue and results in a positive feedback loop, amplifying GBM necrosis development. We show GBM necrosis involves neutrophil-triggered ferroptosis and reveal an unprecedented pro-tumorigenic role of ferroptosis.

Fatty acid biosynthesis (FAB) is an essential and highly conserved metabolic pathway. In bacteria, this process is mediated by an elaborate network of protein•protein interactions (PPIs) involving a small, dynamic acyl carrier protein that interacts with dozens of other partner proteins (PPs). These PPIs have remained poorly characterized due to their dynamic and transient nature. Using a combination of solution-phase NMR spectroscopy and protein-protein docking simulations, we report a comprehensive residue-by-residue comparison of the PPIs formed during FAB in Escherichia coli. This work reveals the molecular basis of six discrete binding events responsible for E. coli FAB and offers insights into a method to characterize these events and those in related carrier protein-dependent pathways. ONE SENTENCE SUMMARY: Through a combination of structural and computational analysis, a comparative evaluation of protein-protein interactions in de novo fatty acid biosynthesis in E. coli is performed.

Context National efforts have advocated for the need to deliver family health history–based interventions to the lay public for more than a decade. Yet, the numbers, characteristics, and outcomes of such interventions are unknown. This first-of-its-kind systematic literature review examines the characteristics and effectiveness of the existing family health history–based interventions. Evidence acquisition The research team systematically searched peer-reviewed articles published between January 2003 and July 2020 in MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Evidence synthesis A total of 35 articles met the inclusion criteria. These studies assessed various behaviors, including family health history collection/communication with family members, family health history communication with healthcare providers, healthy diet adoption, physical activity level, uptake of medical screenings and genetic tests, and being proactive in healthcare matters. The average methodologic quality score of the studies was 9.9 (SD=1.6) of a theoretical range from 2 to 16. Conclusions Many family health history–based interventions exist to examine a variety of behaviors. Yet, there is room for improvement in methodology because few studies used a randomized or quasi-experimental design. In addition, most included studies did not report objective or longer-term outcome data to examine the effectiveness of family health history–based interventions.

This paper explores the role of cultural tensions in the operations of an Information Technology Impact Sourcing (ITIS) venture called Indigena Solutions. The company was based in Vancouver Canada and was intended to provide meaningful careers to a marginalized group, namely Canadian Indigenous Peoples. The company provided on-shore IT services such as help-desk support and software testing. With the support of Accenture and with initial success at high profile clients such as BC Hydro and Vancouver City Trust, the company lasted about seven years. Indigena was declared bankrupt in 2017. This research demonstrates the cultural tensions inherent in creating an Impact Sourcing venture, with challenges of location, the inability to attract Indigenous workers to a non-traditional career, and the underlying challenge of structural racism, despite the recognized social responsibility and commitment to help a marginalized group. The research was designed as a case study using an interpretive approach. The originality of this research rests on the exploration of why Impact Sourcing in a developed country failed to meet the needs of the marginalized Indigenous Peoples community. This research contributes to the body of work that explains tensions inherent in ITIS. Practitioners may find this research valuable as they consider the challenges of establishing and successfully operating an ITIS firm.

Introduction : Participation in education is the right of every child, regardless of disability. An Assistive Technology and Inclusion Programme, implemented at a special school, has provided learners with motor impairments with an alternative to typical writing and other classroom activities in which they cannot participate. This study aimed to describe how learners with motor impairments use assistive technology to participate in classroom activities at a special school in South Africa. Methods : A quantitative, descriptive study was conducted with 34 learners enrolled in this programme. The children were observed performing a pre-determined activity using assistive technology. An observational checklist was compiled from the literature and relevant school activities. Video recordings of each learner’s performance were used to score the checklist. Results : Activity performance was assessed according to the learner’s ability to use assistive technology, their need for assistance, quality of performance and speed of performance. Most learners were able to perform all the activities with some verbal and physical assistance, cutting and erasing required the most assistance but the ability to use the assistive technology (>90%) and quality of performance (>85%) achieved high scores. The median time to complete the activity varied from 5 to 66 seconds. Conclusion : This study yielded descriptive evidence on learners with motor impairments’ successful use of assistive technology when participating in school activities, and reinforced the importance of an occupational therapy Assistive Technology and Inclusion Programme in the classroom. Further context-based evidence is required to improve the expansion and sustainability of such programmes. Estuarine food webs are complex, as marine, freshwater, and terrestrial inputs combine and contribute variable amounts of organic material. Seasonal fluctuations in precipitation amplify the dynamism inherent to estuarine food webs, particularly in lagoonal estuaries, which can be seasonally closed and disconnected from the ocean in low-runoff periods (bar-built lagoons). Despite their abundance along coastlines in Mediterranean climates, the organic matter sources fueling bar-built lagoon food webs are poorly understood, particularly with respect to seasonal hydrologic variability, episodic marine connections, and internal nutrient cycling. In this study, we evaluate the food web of a bar-built lagoon with respect to seasonal differences in lagoon water quality, the sources of organic matter which support consumers, and the trophic ecology of resident fishes. Observed water quality conditions reflected biogeochemical processes associated with salinity-driven stratification and high lagoon residence times and were associated with strong seasonal differences in the contribution of different organic matter sources to lagoon consumers. A variety of organic matter sources supported consumers; marine inputs were important to lagoon food webs in spring when the lagoon was open, while summer food webs were largely driven by phytoplankton which was likely fueled by internal nutrient cycling. Fish diets were largely comprised of crustaceans and fish eggs, with clearly defined trophic niches in spring but high overlap in summer. This study demonstrates that the seasonal changes in bar-built lagoon food webs are largely dependent on ocean connectivity and internal cycling within the lagoon, rather than watershed processes as is typical for many estuaries.

This work reports a study of electropolymerization kinetics, film thickness, stability, and antifouling properties of polydopamine (PDA) and its three analogues: poly(3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-l-alanine) (PL-DOPA), poly(5-hydroxytryptophan) (PL-5-HTP), and poly(Adrenalin) (PAdrenalin). It was observed that the number of the hydroxyl groups on the benzene ring and the type (primary vs secondary) of amine group significantly affect the electropolymerization kinetics and thus the thickness of the obtained polymer films. Monomers with two hydroxyl groups (except Adrenalin) resulted in films that were thicker (∼10-15 nm) than the one with only one hydroxyl group (PL-5-HTP) (∼5-8 nm) under similar conditions. Adrenalin containing a secondary amino group could not be deposited onto the ITO substrate, while the other three compounds containing a primary amino group completely covered the ITO. The PDA films had better electrochemical stability than the other films. No film showed stable antifouling surfaces against protein.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has been widely studied in recent decades due to its high stability, biocompatibility, low redox potential, moderate band gap, and optical transparency in its conducting state. However, for its long-term in vivo applications, the biocompatibility of PEDOT still needs to be improved. To address this challenge, zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PSBEDOT) that contains EDOT backbone with sulfobetaine functional side chains was developed in our previous study. Although PSBEDOT showed great resistance to proteins, cells, and bacteria, it is still not clear how the zwitterionic sulfobetaine side chain affects the electrochemical properties of the polymer and reactivity of the monomer. To achieve better understanding of the structure-function relationships of zwitterionic conducting polymers, we synthesized two derivatives of PSBEDOT, PSBEDOT-4 and PSBEDOT-5, by introducing the alkoxyl spacer between PEDOT backbone and sulfobetaine side chain. The interfacial impedance of PSBEDOT-4 and PSBEDOT-5 was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and showed significant improvement which is about 20 times lower than PSBEDOT on both gold and indium tin oxide substrates at 1 Hz. In the protein adsorption study, PSBEDOT, PSBEDOT-4 and PSBEDOT-5 exhibited comparable resistance to the fibrinogen solution. All three polymers had low protein adsorption around 3–5% comparing to PEDOT. Additionally, the morphology of PSBEDOT, PSBEDOT-4 and PSBEDOT-5 have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. We believe that these stable and biocompatible materials can be excellent candidates for developing long-term bioelectronic devices. Statement of Significance To address the challenges associated with existing conducting polymers for bioelectronics, we developed a versatile and high performance zwitterionic conducting material platform with excellent stability, electrochemical, antifouling and controllable antimicrobial/antifouling properties. In this work, we developed two high-performance conducting polymers and systematically investigated how the structure affects their properties. Our study shows we can accurately tune the molecular structure of the monomer to improve the performance of zwitterionic conducting polymer. This zwitterionic conducting polymer platform may dramatically increase the performance and service life of bio-electrochemical devices for many long-term applications, such as implantable biosensing, tissue engineering, wound healing, robotic prostheses, biofuel cell etc., which all require high performance conducting materials with excellent antifouling property/biocompatibility at complex biointerfaces.

A zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PSBEDOT)-based glucose biosensor was fabricated via encapsulating glucose oxidase (GOx) in a one-step electropolymerization method. Integrating conductivity and hydrophilic properties, PSBEDOT provides a great framework for GOx immobilization and stabilization. The anti-fouling, high-sensitivity, and long-term stability properties of PSBEDOT–GOx make it a promising platform for long-term and continuous glucose monitoring.
