Some of the potential fire hazards resulting from the use of foamed-plastic insulation in buildings are considered. Published literature indicates that if foamed plastic is protected on the room side, the hazards are diminished since the foam does not contribute directly to fire growth by spreading flames. Two techniques are outlined for designing buildings to meet prescribed probabilities of structural failure in fire. They require input information for seven variables; three of these variables, fire load, ventilation, and (experimentally determined) fire resistance, are random variables. Information on the randomness of the first and third variables is available. Fire Research at DBR/NRCC : Proceedings of a Symposium Held in September 1981 to Mark the Opening of the DBR Fire Research Field Station: 22 September 1981, Ottawa, Ont., Canada

The paper addresses the flammability and combustible load of electrical cables in buildings. Several test methods for assessing the fire performance of electrical cables are presented. Les codes du bâtiment et autres règlements imposent souvent des restrictions concernant l'inflammabilité et la combustibilité des matériaux de construction et du contenu des bâtiments, ainsi que l'utilisation de sources potentielles d'inflammation. This publication contains the proceedings of Building Science Insight '87, a series of one-day seminars on fire safety design of buildings held in ten cities across Canada in the fall of 1987. Compartment fires can spread either by destruction or by convection. The potentials of spread by destruction and convection are quantified by the normalized heat load and by the mu-factor, respectively. These spread potentials are amenable to calculations, even though two of the input variables, fire load and ventilation, are random variables.
