Background: Step width is a spatial variable in the frontal plane, defined as the mediolateral distance between the heel (forefoot during sprinting) of bilateral feet at initial contact. Variations in step width may impact the lower limb biomechanics. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the published findings to determine the influence of acute changes in step width on locomotion biomechanics and provide implications for injury prevention and enhanced sports performance. Methods: Literature was identified, selected, and appraised in accordance with the methods of a systematic review. Four electronic databases (Web of Science, MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect) were searched up until May 2023 with the development of inclusion criteria based on the PICO model. Study quality was assessed using the Downs and Black checklist and the measured parameters were summarized. Results: Twenty-three articles and 399 participants were included in the systematic review. The average quality score of the 23 studies included was 9.39 (out of 14). Step width changed the kinematics and kinetics in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes of the lower limb, such as peak rearfoot eversion angle and moment, peak hip adduction angle and moment, knee flexion moment, peak knee internal rotation angle, as well as knee external rotation moment. Alteration of step width has the potential to change the stability and posture during locomotion, and evidence exists for the immediate biomechanical effects of variations in step width to alter proximal kinematics and cues to impact loading variables. Conclusion: Short-term changes in step width during walking, running, and sprinting influenced multiple lower extremity biomechanics. Narrower step width may result in poor balance and higher impact loading on the lower extremities during walking and running and may limit an athlete's sprint performance. Increasing step width may be beneficial for injury rehabilitation, i.e., for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome or tibial bone stress injury. Wider steps increase the supporting base and typically enhance balance control, which in turn could reduce the risks of falling during daily activities. Altering the step width is thus proposed as a simple and non-invasive treatment method in clinical practice. Background: This research investigates the biomechanical impact of the split-step technique on forehand and backhand lunges in badminton, aiming to enhance players' on-court movement efficiency. Despite the importance of agile positioning in badminton, the specific contributions of the split-step to the biomechanical impact of lunging footwork still need to be determined. Methods: This study examined the lower limb kinematics and ground reaction forces of 18 male badminton players performing forehand and backhand lunges. Data were collected using the VICON motion capture system and Kistler force platforms. Variability in biomechanical characteristics was assessed using paired-sample t-tests and Statistical Parametric Mapping 1D (SPM1D). Results: The study demonstrates that the split-step technique in badminton lunges significantly affects lower limb biomechanics. During forehand lunges, the split-step increases hip abduction and rotation while decreasing knee flexion at foot contact. In backhand lunges, it increases knee rotation and decreases ankle rotation. Additionally, the split-step enhances the loading rate of the initial ground reaction force peak and narrows the time gap between the first two peaks. Interval running methodologies simulate competition and training conditions, with the aim of enhancing an athletes' ability to cope with constant deceleration, acceleration, and sudden changes in direction, as associated athletic and performance challenges. Fifteen male athletes were recruited in this study, in which the anterior cruciate ligament was modeled as a nonlinear elastic passive soft tissue in OpenSim 4.2. Participants completed 5 km interval running training on a treadmill. Before and after the interval running, kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography activity of the lower leg during the cutting maneuvers were collected simultaneously. After running training, the anterior cruciate ligament strain demonstrated a decreasing trend when performing unexpected cutting maneuvers. Principal component analysis showed significant differences in knee moments during abduction-adduction; knee angles in flexion-extension, external-internal rotation, and abduction-adduction, as well as knee contact forces in the sagittal and coronal planes. The findings of the study highlight that athletes generate greater adduction moment at the onset of the cut, followed by greater abduction moment towards the end of the cut, which may have a substantial impact on the anterior cruciate ligament loading. An empirical consensus of differences between chronic ankle instability (CAI) individuals and copers (individuals who sprained ankle once and without recurrent symptoms or injury) has not been reported. This study aimed to review the locomotion biomechanics and dynamic postural control between these two populations. Database of ScienceDirect, PubMed and Web of Science was used to search ('chronic ankle instability' OR 'ankle instability') AND ('ankle sprain' OR 'coper*') until 30 November 2020. Articles that made a comparison about changes in biomechanical parameters between Copers and CAI individuals during locomotor or functional tasks were included in this review. Twenty-three articles met the inclusion criteria. CAI individuals exhibited an increased hip flexion to maintain stability, suggesting the adopted hip strategy compared to copers during landing. Dorsiflexion angle and ankle frontal displacement increased considerably compared to copers, which might increase risks of lateral ankle sprain injury. CAI individuals reduced the ankle displacements in the sagittal plane and indicated worse performance of Star Excursion Balance Test in the posterior-lateral direction compared to copers. Identified motion deficits or altered motion strategies provide opportunities for targeted intervention and scheme after index sprain or in CAI individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
