The Netherlands has an extensive pipeline infrastructure for the transport and storage of natural gas. This existing infrastructure could be used in the future for hydrogen transport. For reasons of personal and environmental safety and to ensure reliable supply, the infrastructure is built and operated according to standards and norms for pipeline integrity. Currently, the reliability is ensured by complying with design codes and standards and by using systematic approaches for maintenance and trouble-shooting. The question arises whether the same amount of energy transported with hydrogen as currently with natural gas results in a larger impact on the integrity of the system and the environment around it. High flow velocities are associated to larger pressure drop and higher risk of noise emissions, vibrations and erosion. The flow speed is determined by the selection of system capacity, operating conditions, hardware sizing and economic evaluation. The combination that provides the lowest levelized cost of transport determines what the resulting flow velocity is at all points of the transport system. However, the flow velocity itself can be a constraint in this optimization due to the risks mentioned. For natural gas, this limit is commonly set at 20 m/s (72 km/h), though this is not the case for every segment of the network and at specific locations this can reach higher values. If the same limit would be applied to hydrogen, it may be an unnecessarily conservative constraint on the capacity of new and re-used systems to transport energy. In this study, a review is made of flow-induced risk mechanisms for intrusive equipment, flow-induced turbulence, flow-induced pulsations, acoustics-induced vibration, flow-induced noise and erosion. Capacity from a pressure drop perspective is also checked. This is done scoping the Dutch high-pressure gas transport system (GTS), through the RNB systems, up to the gas receiving spot for the end user. A generic benchmark between natural (G-) gas and hydrogen is presented, when an equal energy transport capacity between the two carriers is assumed, which in practice means whether hydrogen can flow 3 times faster than natural gas. The objective of the benchmark is to evaluate whether under this assumption, any of the phenomena analysed hinders transport at such conditions. This entry provides an overview of the relationship between audiences and journalism. Although traditionally, practitioners and journalism scholars have largely neglected audiences, digitalization has enabled and necessitated taking the audiences of journalism seriously. As advertisement revenues continue to decrease, news organizations are increasingly dependent on their audiences for survival. Scholarly interest in audiences has been stimulated by the proliferation of available options for news use.

The NewHoRRIzon project published its first policy brief in May 2018, coordinated and written by Robert Braun of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) and co-authored by Michael Bernstein of GenØk – Centre for Biosafety with contributions from the NewHoRRIzon team, on the status of RRI in H2020. The policy brief aims at offering evidence based policy recommendations—informed by the first inputs of NewHoRRIzon research efforts across 19 social labs—to policy makers, journalists and interested researchers on the state of play of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in Horizon (H2020) and proposing immediate actions to consider for mainstreaming RRI in the next framework program, FP9. The early research highlights steps that the EU has already initiated to advance RRI in H2020 programming, such as including commitments in the founding regulation of the programme and establishing devoted activities through the Science with and for Society programme. However, findings also point to numerous challenges for widespread and sustained implementation across H2020 programming and projects. First results indicate a range of policies that could be pursued to build capacity of the European R&I enterprise to realize RRI. Our recommendations, among others, include: focus on excellence in terms of transparent and socially robust knowledge that is inclusive of stakeholder and citizen perspectives; capacity building and training of programme officers, evaluators, researchers, innovators, and stakeholders to learn more about ways that science and technology are embedded in society; and further investments in the development of “Key Performance Indicators” or other methods of monitoring and evaluating RRI implementation.

Title: Bridging what people want and what they need. Making sense of the value of journalism in people’s everyday lives. 25 years ago mass communication scholar Denis McQuail (1992) called for more audience research on audience perceptions of quality performance. Although he warned against the predominance of equating “duration of attention and share of ‘media time’ […] with significance for receivers or society” (p. 312, emphasis original), anno 2016 it is still common practice for news organisations to rely on user metrics as a measure of people’s news preferences and interests (see Groot Kormelink and Costera Meijer, forthcoming). Although these instruments give precise details on the what, when and how long of news use, such metrics are limited instruments for understanding what people really value and truly appreciate about news. Autosomal dominant leukodystrophy (ADLD) is an adult onset demyelinating disorder that is caused by duplications of the lamin B1 (LMNB1) gene. However, as only a few cases have been analyzed in detail, the mechanisms underlying LMNB1 duplications are unclear. We report the detailed molecular analysis of the largest collection of ADLD families studied, to date. We have identified the minimal duplicated region necessary for the disease, defined all the duplication junctions at the nucleotide level and identified the first inverted LMNB1 duplication. We have demonstrated that the duplications are not recurrent; patients with identical duplications share the same haplotype, likely inherited from a common founder and that the duplications originated from intrachromosomal events. The duplication junction sequences indicated that nonhomologous end joining or replication-based mechanisms such fork stalling and template switching or microhomology-mediated break induced repair are likely to be involved. LMNB1 expression was increased in patients’ fibroblasts both at mRNA and protein levels and the three LMNB1 alleles in ADLD patients show equal expression, suggesting that regulatory regions are maintained within the rearranged segment. These results have allowed us to elucidate duplication mechanisms and provide insights into allele-specific LMNB1 expression levels.

Journalists and news organizations do wish to encourage audience contribution and digital innovation, but find it difficult to reconcile traditional journalistic values and practices with more participatory ones. In this study, this resistance to change is further investigated by interviewing 22 frontrunners in Dutch journalism who are pioneers in audience participation. How do they make sense of participatory journalism? The possibilities, constraints and dilemmas their discourse constructs are examined through an interpretative repertoire analysis. Frontrunners draw upon six interpretative repertoires: innovation, craftsmanship, marketing, being one’s own boss, education, and profitability. All frontrunners speak the innovation repertoire and at least one of the other repertoires, often in mutual contradiction. This analysis demonstrates the current paradox of how journalism is criticized for its traditional and paternalistic culture of exclusion and at the same time valued and protected as a profession and craft. It is concluded that even innovative journalistic frontrunners are subject to this paradox, despite their obvious willingness to realize participatory journalism. By conducting this specific type of analysis, this study demonstrates routine deployments of cultural understandings in journalistic linguistic practices and reveals practical consequences in terms of possibilities and constraints for audience participation and innovation in journalism.

The Wnt signaling pathway is an important regulator of cellular differentiation in a variety of cell types including osteoblasts. In this study, we investigated the impact of Wnt signaling on the function of human osteoblasts in relation to the stage of differentiation. Differentiating osteoblasts were created upon glucocorticoid (GC) treatment, whereas nondifferentiating osteoblasts were created by excluding GCs from the culture medium. GC-induced differentiation suppressed endogenous P-catenin levels and transcriptional activity. During GC-induced osteoblast differentiation, activation of Wnt signaling slightly decreased alkaline phosphatase activity, but strongly suppressed matrix mineralization. In addition, mRNA expression of several Wnt signaling related genes was strongly regulated during GC-induced osteoblast differentiation, including frizzled homolog 8, dickkopf homolog 1, and secreted frizzled-related protein 1. In contrast, in the absence of GC-induced differentiation, Wnt signaling acted positively by stimulating basal alkaline phosphatase activity. Interestingly, pre-stimulation of Wnt signaling in early osteoblasts enhanced their differentiation capacity later on during the GC-induced differentiation process. In conclusion, we showed a differentiation-dependent effect of Wnt signaling on osteoblasts. Wnt signaling stimulated early osteoblasts in their capacity to differentiate, whereas mature osteoblasts were strongly inhibited in their capacity to induce mineralization. Moreover, osteoblast differentiation suppressed endogenous Wnt signaling and changed the expression of multiple Wnt signaling related genes.
