Physical visualization and chemical imaging of label-free latent fingerprints on PVDF membrane.

Retinal detachment is a severe complication of acute retinal necrosis, threatening vision. The published articles on the effectiveness of laser in preventing retinal detachment in acute retinal necrosis are controversial. Therefore, we aim to evaluate whether prophylactic laser is effective for retinal detachment after acute retinal necrosis.PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched, and the retrieved records were screened. Each included study has well-defined laser-treated group and control group without laser treatment or with enough data for manual grouping. The quality of the included studies was assessed using ROBINS-I ("Risk Of Bias In Nonrandomized Studies-of Interventions"). Meta-analysis was conducted to calculate the pooled odds ratios and their 95% confidence interval. Sensitivity analysis was used to test the solidarity, and subgroup analysis was performed to determine the source of heterogeneity.Fourteen studies with a total of 532 eyes were eventually included. The quality of the included studies was moderate. The combined results showed that the pooled odds ratio was 0.61 (95% confidence interval [0.41∼0.90], P0.05, I 2 = 27%). Sensitivity analysis showed that the odds ratios were similar when excluding any study. Subgroup analysis showed moderate heterogeneity among three subgroups (I 2 = 48.0%, P = 0.15 for heterogeneity), and the odds ratio in antiviral therapy and steroid combined with prophylactic laser was 0.43 (95% confidence interval [0.25∼0.74], P0.05, I 2 = 0%).In patients with acute retinal necrosis, laser photocoagulation is an effective treatment to prevent retinal detachment, especially in the subgroup combined with antiviral therapy and steroid.

This study aimed to summarize the latest literature on the trends and incidence of ocular trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic.Systematic review and meta-analysis.A systematic literature search was conducted to identify the relevant literature. The search period was between January 1, 2020, and September 20, 2021. The incidence of overall and various types of ocular trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic and the control period was analyzed. The data from different studies were pooled. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated.A total of 32 articles were included. After pooling the data from all included studies, the incidence of total and pediatric ocular trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic was 67.7% and 54.3% of those in the control period, respectively. However, the proportion of ocular trauma in eye emergency visits increased during the pandemic (OR, 95% CI: 1.46, 1.04-2.06). The proportion of domestic ocular trauma increased (OR, 95% CI: 3.42, 1.01-11.62), while ocular trauma related to sports and outdoor activities and occupational ocular trauma decreased (OR, 95% CI: 0.64, 0.09-4.29 and 0.18, 0.10-0.33, respectively). It was also reported that chemical injury caused by alcohol-based sanitizers, photokeratitis caused by ultraviolet lamps, and mechanical eye injury caused by masks increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.There was a reduction in overall eye injuries and substantial differences in the spectrum of ocular trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic. Proper health education and supervision should be strengthened to prevent ocular injuries related to COVID-19 preventive interventions.

Nonsyndromic cleft palate only (NSCP) is a common congenital malformation worldwide. In this study, we report a three-generation pedigree with NSCP following the autosomal-dominant pattern. Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing revealed that only the frameshift variant c.1012dupG [p. E338Gfs*26] in PARD3 cosegregated with the disease. In zebrafish embryos, ethmoid plate patterning defects were observed with PARD3 ortholog disruption or expression of patient-derived N-terminal truncating PARD3 (c.1012dupG), which implicated PARD3 in ethmoid plate morphogenesis. PARD3 plays vital roles in determining cellular polarity. Compared with the apical distribution of wild-type PARD3, PARD3-p. E338Gfs*26 mainly localized to the basal membrane in 3D-cultured MCF-10A epithelial cells. The interaction between PARD3-p. E338Gfs*26 and endogenous PARD3 was identified by LC-MS/MS and validated by co-IP. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that PARD3-p. E338Gfs*26 substantially altered the localization of endogenous PARD3 to the basement membrane in 3D-cultured MCF-10A cells. Furthermore, seven variants, including one nonsense variant and six missense variants, were identified in the coding region of PARD3 in sporadic cases with NSCP. Subsequent analysis showed that PARD3-p. R133*, like the insertion variant of c.1012dupG, also changed the localization of endogenous full-length PARD3 and that its expression induced abnormal ethmoid plate morphogenesis in zebrafish. Based on these data, we reveal PARD3 gene variation as a novel candidate cause of nonsyndromic cleft palate only.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the most common malignant cancer in the female reproductive system. Hypoxia is an important part of tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), which is closely related to cancer progression and could significantly affect cancer metastasis and prognosis. However, the relationship between hypoxia and OC remained unclear. OCs were molecularly subtyped by consensus clustering analysis based on the expression characteristics of hypoxia-related genes. Kaplan–Meier (KM) survival was used to determine survival characteristics across subtypes. Immune infiltration analysis was performed by using Estimation of Stromal and Immune cells in Malignant Tumors using Expression data (ESTIMATE) and microenvironment cell populations-counter (MCP-Counter). Differential expression analysis was performed by using limma package. Next, univariate Cox and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analyses were used to build a hypoxia-related risk score model (HYRS). Mutational analysis was applied to determine genomic variation across the HYRS groups. The Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) algorithm was used to compare the effectiveness of HYRS in immunotherapy prediction. We divided OC samples into two molecular subtypes (C1 and C2 subtypes) based on the expression signature of hypoxia genes. Compared with C1 subtype, there was a larger proportion of poor prognosis genotypes in the C2 subtype. And most immune cells scored higher in the C2 subtype. Next, we obtained a HYRS based on 7 genes. High HYRS group had a higher gene mutation rate, such as TP53. Moreover, HYRS performed better than TIDE in predicting immunotherapy effect. Combined with clinicopathological features, the nomogram showed that HYRS had the greatest impact on survival prediction and a strong robustness.

A wet nitrocellulose membrane has been explored for the level 3 feature of latent fingerprint visualization and gender determination.

The time since deposition (TSD) of latent fingermarks (LFMs) serves as "witnesses" for crime scene reconstructions. Nevertheless, existing TSD prediction approaches focused on either physical or chemical aging parameters leading to inaccurate estimation. A novel label-free protocol has been developed, where both physical ridge patterns and lipid oxide (LipOx) degradation kinetics are realized using optical microscopy and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and combined for TSD prediction. Specifically, the surface interrogation (SI)-SECM titration was utilized to monitor the LipOx degradation in LFM arrays aligned by hole array masks, through which we derived the LipOx degradation function. After establishing the relationship between several titration parameters and titrated area by experimental and numerical simulation methods, the titrated area could be reasonably estimated and subsequently used to calculate the surface coverage of LipOx. Results demonstrated that the tip transient revealed the LipOx coverage of deposited LFMs. Notably, LipOx coverage was found to increase during the first day and then decrease over time, whose degradation rate was susceptible to light. Thus, TSD candidates of an LFM could be limited to two values through the established function. Due to the nonmonotonic trend of LipOx aging, a physical parameter "the gray value ratio (GVR) of furrows to ridges" was proposed to exclude irrelevant TSD through support vector machine (SVM) classification. Ultimately, we predicted TSDs of seven LFMs with estimation errors of 2.2-26.8%. Overall, our strategy, with the outperformed capability of gleaning physical and electrochemical information on LFMs, can provide a truly label-free way of studying LFMs and hold great promise for multidimensional fingerprint information analysis.

A simple and universal strategy for fabricating flexible 25 μm platinum (Pt) disk ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) was proposed, where a pulled borosilicate glass micropipette acted as a mold for shaping the flexible tip with flexible epoxy resin. The whole preparation procedure was highly efficient, enabling 10 or more probes to be manually fabricated within 10 h. Intriguingly, this technique permits an adjustable RG ratio, tip length, and stiffness, which could be tuned according to varying experimental demands. Besides, the electroactive area of the probe could be exposed and made renewable with a thin blade, allowing its reuse in multiple experiments. The flexibility characterization was then employed to optimize the resin/hardener mass ratio of epoxy resin and the tip position during HF etching in the fabrication process, suggesting that more hardener, a larger RG value, or a longer tip length obtained stronger deformation resistance. Subsequently, the as-prepared probe was examined by optical microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and SECM approach curves. The results demonstrated the probe possessed good geometry with a small RG ratio of less than 3 and exceptional electrochemical properties, and its insulating sheath remained undeformed after blade cutting. Owing to the tip's flexibility, it could be operated in contactless mode with an extremely low working distance and even in contact mode scanning to achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity while guaranteeing that the tip and samples would suffer minimal damage if the tip crashed. Finally, the flexible probe was successfully employed in three scanning scenarios where tilted and 3D structured PDMS microchips, a latent fingerprint deposited on the stiff copper sheet, and soft egg white were included. In all, the flexible probe encompasses the advantages of traditional disk UMEs and circumvents their principal drawbacks of tip crash and causing sample scratches, which is thus more compatible with large specimens of 3D structured, stiff, or even soft topography.

Fingerprints provide sufficient and reliable discriminative characteristics which have been considered one of the most robust evidence for individualization. The limitation of current minutiae-based fingerprint technology seems to be solved with the development of level 3 features since they can offer additional information for problematic fingerprint recognition and even donor profiling. So far, tremendous efforts have been devoted to detecting and analysing the third-level details. This review summarizes the advances in level 3 details with an emphasis on their reliability assessment, visualization methods based on physical interaction, residue-response, mass spectrometry and electrochemical techniques, as well as the potentiality for individualization, donor profiling and even other application scenarios. In the end, we also give a personal perspective on the future direction and the remaining challenges in the third-level-detail-related field. We believe that the new exciting progress is expected in the development of level 3 detail detection and analysis with continued interest and attention to this field.

Intergranular corrosion is considered the major cause of the embrittlement of archaeological silver artifacts. However, the galvanic attack between different phases is a rather complex process involving the differences in local electrochemical activities that have been proved difficult to further understand with existing techniques. Herein, a visualized quantitative procedure of studying intergranular corrosions is established in this work through the preparation of a simulated silver–copper alloy sample and application of the scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) as a high spatial resolution method. The macroscopic corrosion behavior according to the droplet corrosion tests is highly consistent with the results of local electrochemical activities acquired from SECCM. Meanwhile, the possibility of studying intergranular corrosion behavior in different soil environments by SECCM is demonstrated through a corrosion test under standardized ion conditions, which indicates a bright future of this method in the field of corrosions.

Background Kruppel-like factor 16 (KLF16), a member of the KLF family, is involved in metabolism and regulation of the endocrine system and has emerging roles in tumor progression. However, the expression of KLF16 and its role in breast cancer are elusive. Methods We investigated the expression and prognostic value of KLFs in breast cancer using data acquired from the TCGA BRCA dataset and the Kaplan-Meier plotter dataset. The protein levels of KLF16 in breast specimens were detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). KLF16 silencing using shRNAs was performed to explore the effects of KLF16 on breast cancer cell growth, migration, and invasion. The expression of EMT markers in cells manipulated for KLF16 expression was assessed by Western blotting. Results Using publicly available dataset and specimens from breast cancer patients, we found that the expression levels of KLF16 were significantly higher in tumor tissues and that high levels of KLF16 were associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. Moreover, KLF16 expression levels had relation to several clinicopathological parameters of breast cancer, including the molecular subtype and histological grade. Importantly, knockdown of KLF16 dramatically suppressed cell proliferation both in vitro and in vivo. Also, KLF16 deletion impaired migration, and invasion in breast cancer cells, and suppressed epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Conclusion Our results suggest that KLF16 has important oncogenic functions in breast cancer and that the expression levels of KLF16 are associated with prognosis in breast cancer patients. Our findings also suggest that KLF16 is involved in proliferation, migration, and invasion in breast cancer cells. Thus, KLF16 might be a promising prognostic marker and a therapeutic target for breast cancer.

Background Ovarian cancer (OC) is the deadliest gynecological cancer. The absence of biomarkers in early detection and chemotherapy resistance is a principal cause of treatment failure in OC. Methods In this study, next generation sequencing (NGS) was used to sequence the mRNA of 44 OC patients including 14 chemotherapy insensitive and 18 sensitive patients. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from OC patients (compared with healthy controls) and chemotherapy sensitive patients (compared with chemotherapy insensitive patients) were identified by edgeR v3.12.0 in R v3.2.2, which were enriched using Gene Ontology (GO) database and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway (KEGG). The common DEGs in cancer occurring and chemotherapy sensitivity were further screened. Among them, genes participating in chemotherapy sensitivity associated pathways were regarded as chemotherapy sensitivity‐related key genes. Quantitative real‐time PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were used to verify the expression of the key genes. Results We found 1588 DEGs between OC patients and healthy controls (HCs), which were mainly enriched in cell cycle pathway. Meanwhile, 249 DEGs were identified between chemotherapy sensitive and insensitive OC patients, which were mainly enriched in MAPK signaling pathway, ERBB signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway, and IL‐17 signaling pathway. Thirty‐five DEGs were shared in chemotherapy sensitivity group and cancer occurring group. Among them, there are five genes (JUND, JUNB, MUC5B, NRG1, and NR4A1) participating in the above four chemotherapy sensitivity‐related pathways. It is remarkable that JUND is in the upstream of MUC5B in IL‐17 signaling pathway and their expressions were verified by qPCR and IHC. Conclusions The expression levels of the key genes related to chemotherapy sensitivity might be used as biomarkers to predict the treatment outcome and as a target to improve prognosis., The expression levels of the key genes related to chemotherapy sensitivity might be used as biomarkers and targets to predict the chemotherapy effect and treatment of OC patients.

Level 3 details play essential roles in practical latent fingerprint (LFP) identification. To reliably extract reproducible and identifiable level 3 features, high-resolution images of fingerprints with adequate quality are required. Conventional methods for acquiring level 3 details often involve specific pretreatment, intricate peripheral, leading to time-consuming analysis. Herein, we simply used water to develop the sebaceous LFPs deposited on nitrocellulose (NC) membranes with only one step, and then the high-resolution (2048 pixels per inch) optical micrographs were captured to reflect the live fingertip with high fidelity. From the pictures, level 3 features, including all dimensional attributes of the ridges and pores such as number, size, location, shape, and edge contour can be extracted accurately and reproducibly. Among them, qualitative features (the structures of ridge edges) and several quantitative characteristics (the number and the relative location of sweat pores) exhibit good reproducibility. Remarkably, we proposed a new parameter termed “frequency distribution of the distance between adjacent sweat pores”, short form “FDDasp”, which was further proved highly identifiable in different individuals, enabling the successful distinguishment between two fragmentary fingerprints with similar level 2 structures. We believe that this methodology provides a fast and quantitative analytical paradigm for latent fingerprint identification at level 3 details.

The cellular heterogeneity and plasticity are often overlooked due to the averaged bulk assay in conventional methods. Optical imaging-based single-cell analysis usually requires specific labeling of target molecules inside or on the surface of the cell membrane, interfering with the physiological homeostasis of the cell. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), as an alternative approach, enables label-free imaging of single cells, which still confronts the challenge that the long-time scanning process is not feasible for large-scale analysis at the single-cell level. Herein, we developed a methodology combining a programmable SECM (P-SECM) with an addressable microwell array, which dramatically shortened the time consumption for the topography detection of the micropits array occupied by the polystyrene beads as well as the evaluation of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of the 82 single cells compared with the traditional SECM imaging. This new arithmetic was based on the line scanning approach, enabling analysis of over 900 microwells within 1.2 h, which is 10 times faster than conventional SECM imaging. By implementing this configuration with the dual-mediator-based voltage-switching (VSM) mode, we investigated the activity of ALP, a promising marker for cancer stem cells, in hundreds of tumor and stromal cells on a single microwell device. The results discovered that not only a higher ALP activity is presented in cancer cells but also the heterogeneous distribution of kinetic constant (kf value) of ALP activity can be obtained at the single-cell level. By directly relating large numbers of addressed cells on the scalable microfluidic device to the deterministic routing of the above SECM tip, our platform holds potential as a high-content screening tool for label-free single-cell analysis.

A label-free strategy for imaging blood fingermarks (BFMs) on a hydrophobic poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) membrane has been developed using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in the surface interrogation (SI) mode. In this approach, hexaammineruthenium chloride ([Ru(NH3)6]Cl3) was chosen as a redox mediator to react chemically with the electroactive hemichrome (HC) present in the BFM ridge deposits but not in the furrow regions. This provides a sharp contrast of the current response at the tip of the electrode between ridges and furrows and results in an electrochemical image of the BFM with the high resolution required for personal identification. In addition, this approach has high sensitivity, with the ability to directly image latent BFMs deposited with 1000-fold diluted blood on PVDF membranes. Such marks cannot be detected by optical microscopy. Moreover, for the first time a commercial PVDF membrane was used instead of adhesive forensic tape to lift the BFMs from common glass and multicolored banknote surfaces, and the lifted BFMs could also be efficiently imaged by this electrochemical method. The 3D cell spheroid is an emerging tool that allows better recapitulating of in vivo scenarios with multiple factors such as tissue-like morphology and membrane protein expression that intimately coordinates with enzyme activity, thus providing a psychological environment for tumorigenesis study. For analyzing different spheroids, conventional optical imaging may be hampered by the need for fluorescent labeling, which could cause toxicity side effects. As an alternative approach, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) enables label-free imaging. However, SECM for cell spheroid imaging is currently suffering from incapability of systematically analyzing the cell aggregates from spheroid generation, electrochemical signal gaining, and the gene expression on different individual cell spheroids. Herein, we developed a top-removable microfluidic device for cell aggregate yielding and SECM imaging methodology to analyze heterotypic 3D cell spheroids on a single device. This technique allows not only on-chip culturing of cell aggregates but also SECM imaging of the spheroids after opening the chip and subsequent qPCR assay of corresponding clusters. Through employment of the micropit arrays (85 × 4) with a top withdrawable microfluidic layer, uniformly sized breast tumor cell and fibroblast spheroids can be simultaneously produced on a single device. By leveraging voltage-switching mode SECM at different potentials of dual mediators, we evaluated alkaline phosphatase without disturbance of substrate morphology for distinguishing the tumor aggregates from stroma. Moreover, this method also enables gene expression profiling on individual tumor or stromal spheroids. Therefore, this new strategy can seamlessly bridge SECM measurements and molecular biological analysis.

Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the GBA gene. Enzyme replacement treatment is the most effective therapy available for type 1 GD patients, but it is very expensive and does not improve neurologic outcomes in type 2 and 3 GD patients. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an adeno-associated virus 9 (AAV9) vector expressing the Gba gene delivered systemically in GD mouse models. To detect the therapeutic effects of the AAV9-mediated Gba transfer on the systemic symptoms of GD, an inducible whole-body Gba knockout mouse was developed in which tamoxifen effectively induced whole-body Gba gene deletion, and the mice displayed systemic symptoms of GD. The AAV9-CMV-Gba vector, with the expression of Gba driven by the universal CMV promoter, restored GCase activity in multiple organs and prolonged the lifespan in tamoxifen-induced GD mice after intravenous injection. Mice with brain-specific Gba deletion were also included in this study as a model of neuropathic GD (nGD) and injected intraperitoneally on postnatal day 5 with the AAV9-SYN-Gba vector; this improved the GCase activity, ameliorated the neuropathological changes and extended the mean lifespan two-fold. This study demonstrates that AAV9-mediated gene transfer is a potentially effective treatment for GD.

In this study, ultrasonic-assisted induction brazing (UAIB) of diamond grits onto 1045 steel with Ni–Cr–B–Si–Fe was investigated and compared with those obtained by the conventional induction brazing (CIB). Using UAIB led to the result that the surface of brazed filler alloy was flatter and less slags and the bond zone was of less and smaller cracks. The embedded ratio of brazed diamond was improved 35.4% by UAIB. Furthermore, UAIB-brazed joints contained a more even distribution and smaller grain sizes of interfacial microstructures. In both the methods studied, a layer of Cr3C2 was formed on the bonding interface; however, this layer was short and contained more discontinuous laths with random directions when UAIB was used. The maximum compressive residual stress at the bottom of the brazed diamond grits was reduced using UAIB by 21.6%. Using UAIB increased the average shear force of the joints by 28.5% and greatly reduced the percentage of fracture failure joints on the UAIB grinding wheel, suggesting an enhancement in the strength of the joints. These differences were ascribed to the acoustic effects induced by ultrasonic vibration.

GSG2, also known as Haspin, is a novel molecule found to be involved in human cancers.Materials and Methods: In this study, immunohistochemical analysis was used to detect GSG2 expression in ovarian cancer tissues and corresponding normal tissues. Statistical analysis was performed to construct relationship between GSG2 and tumor characteristics as well as prognosis. Ovarian cell model with GSG2 knockdown was constructed through lentivirus-mediated transfection of shRNA, which was used in MTT assay, colony formation assay and flow cytometry for investigating the role of GSG2 in ovarian cancer. A human apoptosis antibody array was used to identify potential downstream apoptosis-related proteins of GSG2.Results: The results demonstrated the upregulation of GSG2 in ovarian cancer, whose expression was positively related to tumor grade and AJCC stage, and negatively correlated with patients’ prognosis. Moreover, knockdown of GSG2 inhibited ovarian cancer development through suppressing cell growth and inducing cell apoptosis. Further exploration revealed that a variety of apoptosis-related and PI3K signaling pathway-related proteins may be implicated in the GSG2 induced regulation of ovarian cancer.Conclusion: In summary, it was illustrated that GSG2 was involved in the development of ovarian cancer, which has the potential to become therapeutic target and prognostic indicator in ovarian cancer treatment.Keywords: ovarian cancer, GSG2, prognosis, cell proliferation, cell apoptosis

Objective This study aimed to construct a tightly binding antibiotic sustained release system on the polyetheretherketone (PEEK) surface and investigate the cellular activity and antibacterial properties of the new oral implant materials. Methods Low-temperature argon plasma under certain parameters was used to prepare P-PEEK with nano-topology, and chemical deposition technology was adopted to form a polydopamine (PDA) coating on the PEEK surface to build a biological binding platform, PDA/P-PEEK. Subsequently, vancomycin gelatin nanoparticles (Van-GNPs) were prepared by two-step desolvation method. Finally, Van-GNPs were combined with PEEK implant material surface to form a new composite material, Van-GNPs/PEEK. scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and contact angle tester were used to comprehensively characterize the materials. The in vitro release test of Van was performed by dynamic dialysis with ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The cell cytotoxicity and adhesion tests were studied by mouse embryonic osteoblasts. The antibacterial properties were evaluated by bacterial adhesion test, plate colony counting, and antimicrobial ring test with Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans. Results PEEK was treated with low-temperature argon plasma and attached to PDA to form a biological binding platform. The synthesized Van-GNPs were smooth, round, with uniform particle size distribution, and bound to PEEK to form a new composite material, which can release Van constantly. Cell experiments showed that Van-GNPs/PEEK had no cytotoxicity and had good interaction with osteoblasts. Bacterial experiments showed that surface conjugation with Van-GNPs could significantly improve the antibacterial performance of PEEK against S. aureus and S. mutans. Significance This study demonstrated that Van-GNPs/PEEK have good cellular compatibility and autonomous antibacterial properties, which provide a theoretical basis for the wide application of PEEK in the field of stomatology.

Fingermarks have long been recognized as one of the most reliable and valuable evidence for personal identification. In practice, fingerprint analysis primarily concentrates on latent fingerprint visualization. However, fingerprint visualization techniques do not always enable individualization when fingermarks collected in crime scenes are fragmentary, ambiguous, or deformed. Age determination techniques based on physical and chemical composition changes in fingerprints over time have attracted researchers' attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the components of fingerprints are liable to factors including donor features, deposition conditions, substrate properties, environmental conditions and revealing methods. All the influences mainly contribute to unreliable outcomes of age estimation. Recent developments in fingermark age determination have moved forward to more precise approaches. The advanced methods can be classified into two categories including techniques based on the modifications of physical characteristics and chemical composition characteristics. Herein, the review includes the five types of variables that influence the aging process. The methodologies are subsequently highlighted along with their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, photography, optical, microscopy and electrochemical methods, and vibrational spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS) techniques are summarized in detail, with an emphasis on their utilization.
