Active plasma lenses are compact devices developed as a promising beam-focusing alternative for charged particle beams, capable of short focal lengths for high-energy beams. We have previously shown that linear magnetic fields with gradients of around 0.3 kT/m can be achieved in argon-filled plasma lenses that preserve beam emittance [C.A. Lindstr{\o}m et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 194801 (2018)]. Here we show that with argon in a 500 {\mu}m diameter capillary, the fields are still linear with a focusing gradient of 3.6 kT/m, which is an order of magnitude higher than the gradients of quadrupole magnets. The current pulses that generate the magnetic field are provided by compact Marx banks, and are highly repeatable. These results establish active plasma lenses as an ideal device for pulsed particle beam applications requiring very high focusing gradients that are uniform throughout the lens aperture., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. The Heusler compound ScInAu$_2$ was previously reported to have a superconducting ground state with a critical temperature of 3.0 K. Recent high throughput calculations have also predicted that the material harbors a topologically non-trivial band structure similar to that reported for beta-PdBi$_2$. In an effort to explore the interplay between the superconducting and topological properties properties, electrical resistance, magnetization, and x-ray diffraction measurements were performed on polycrystalline ScInAu$_2$. The data reveal that high-quality polycrystalline samples lack the super-conducting transition present samples that have not been annealed. These results indicate the earlier reported superconductivity is non-intrinsic. Several compounds in the Au-In-Sc ternary phase space (ScAu$_2$, ScIn$_3$, and ScInAu$_2$) were explored in an attempt to identify the secondary phase responsible for the non-intrinsic superconductivity. The FLASHForward experimental facility is a high-performance test-bed for precision plasma-wakefield research, aiming to accelerate high-quality electron beams to GeV-levels in a few centimetres of ionised gas. The plasma is created by ionising gas in a gas cell either by a high-voltage discharge or a high-intensity laser pulse. The electrons to be accelerated will either be injected internally from the plasma background or externally from the FLASH superconducting RF front end. In both cases the wakefield will be driven by electron beams provided by the FLASH gun and linac modules operating with a 10 Hz macro-pulse structure, generating 1.25 GeV, 1 nC electron bunches at up to 3 MHz micro-pulse repetition rates. At full capacity, this FLASH bunch-train structure corresponds to 30 kW of average power, orders of magnitude higher than drivers available to other state-of-the-art LWFA and PWFA experiments. This high-power functionality means FLASHForward is the only plasma-wakefield facility in the world with the immediate capability to develop, explore, and benchmark high-average-power plasma-wakefield research essential for next-generation facilities. The operational parameters and technical highlights of the experiment are discussed, as well as the scientific goals and high-average-power outlook.

A tunable plasma-based energy dechirper has been developed at FLASHForward to remove the correlated energy spread of a 681~MeV electron bunch. Through the interaction of the bunch with wakefields excited in plasma the projected energy spread was reduced from a FWHM of 1.31$\%$ to 0.33$\%$ without reducing the stability of the incoming beam. The experimental results for variable plasma density are in good agreement with analytic predictions and three-dimensional simulations. The proof-of-principle dechirping strength of $1.8$~GeV/mm/m significantly exceeds those demonstrated for competing state-of-the-art techniques and may be key to future plasma wakefield-based free-electron lasers and high energy physics facilities, where large intrinsic chirps need to be removed.

Active plasma lensing is a compact technology for strong focusing of charged particle beams, which has gained considerable interest for use in novel accelerator schemes. While providing kT/m focusing gradients, active plasma lenses can have aberrations caused by a radially nonuniform plasma temperature profile, leading to degradation of the beam quality. We present the first direct measurement of this aberration, consistent with theory, and show that it can be fully suppressed by changing from a light gas species (helium) to a heavier gas species (argon). Based on this result, we demonstrate emittance preservation for an electron beam focused by an argon-filled active plasma lens., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Active plasma lenses have the potential to enable broad-ranging applications of plasma-based accelerators owing to their compact design and radially symmetric kT/m-level focusing fields, facilitating beam-quality preservation and compact beam transport. We report on the direct measurement of magnetic field gradients in active plasma lenses and demonstrate their impact on the emittance of a charged particle beam. This is made possible by the use of a well-characterized electron beam with 1.4 mm mrad normalized emittance from a conventional accelerator. Field gradients of up to 823 T/m are investigated. The observed emittance evolution is supported by numerical simulations, which suggest the potential for conservation of the core beam emittance in such a plasma lens setup., Comment: 17 pages, 7 Figures

Using dc and ac magnetometry, the pressure dependence of the magnetization of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic coordination polymer Mn(N(CN)$_{2}$)$_{2}$ was studied up to 12 kbar and down to 8K. The magnetic transition temperature, $T_c$, increases dramatically with applied pressure $(P)$, where a change from $T_c(P=\text{ambient}) = 16.0$ K to $T_c(P=12.1$~kbar$) = 23.5$ K was observed. In addition, a marked difference in the magnetic behavior is observed above and below 7.1 kbar. Specifically, for $P<7.1$ kbar, the differences between the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled (fc-zfc) magnetizations, the coercive field, and the remanent magnetization decrease with increasing pressure. However, for $P>7.1$ kbar, the behavior is inverted. Additionally, for $P>8.6$ kbar, minor hysteresis loops are observed. Magnetic order in the thermally quenched photomagnetic Prussian blue analogue coordination polymer K0.27Co[Fe(CN)6]0.73[D2O6]0.27 1.42D2O has been studied down to 4 K with unpolarized and polarized neutron powder diffraction as a function of applied magnetic field. Analysis of the data allows the onsite coherent magnetization of the Co and Fe spins to be established. Specifically, magnetic fields of 1 T and 4 T induce moments parallel to the applied field, and the sample behaves as a ferromagnet with a wandering axis.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the drag force acting on a high porosity aerogel immersed in liquid ${}^3$He and its effect on sound propagation. The drag force is characterized by the Knudsen number, which is defined as the ratio of the quasiparticle mean free path to the radius of an aerogel strand. Evidence of the Knudsen-hydrodynamic crossover is clearly demonstrated by a drastic change in the temperature dependence of ultrasound attenuation in 98% porosity aerogel. Our theoretical analysis shows that the frictional sound damping caused by the drag force is governed by distinct laws in the two regimes, providing excellent agreement with the experimental observation., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured on a single crystal of the magnetoelectric ferrimagnetic compound Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. The fits of the infrared phonons show a magnetodielectric effect near the transition temperature ($T_{c}\sim 60$~K). Assignments to strong far infrared phonon modes have been made, especially those exhibiting anomalous behavior around the transition temperature.

The magnetic anisotropy of thin (~ 200 nm) and thick (~ 2 $\mu$m) films and of polycrystalline (diameters ~ 60 nm) powders of the Prussian blue analogue Rb$_{0.7}$Ni$_{4.0}$[Cr(CN)$_6$]$_{2.9} \cdot n$H$_2$O, a ferromagnetic material with $T_c \sim 70$ K, have been investigated by magnetization, ESR at 50 GHz and 116 GHz, and variable-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD). The origin of the anisotropic magnetic response cannot be attributed to the direct influence of the solid support, but the film growth protocol that preserves an organized two-dimensional film is important. In addition, the anisotropy does not arise from an anisotropic g-tensor nor from magneto-lattice variations above and below $T_c$. By considering effects due to magnetic domains and demagnetization factors, the analysis provides reasonable descriptions of the low and high field data, thereby identifying the origin of the magnetic anisotropy., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, corrected and expanded version

Longitudinal sound attenuation measurements in superfluid 3He in 98% aerogel were conducted at pressures between 14 and 33 bar and in magnetic fields up to 4.44 kG. The temperature dependence of the ultrasound attenuation in the A-like phase was determined for the entire superfluid region exploiting the field induced meta-stable A-like phase at the highest field. In the lower field, the A-B transition in aerogel was identified by a smooth jump in attenuation on both cooling and warming. Based on the transitions observed on warming, a phase diagram as a function of pressure (P), temperature (T) and magnetic field (B) is constructed. We find that the A-B phase boundary in aerogel recedes in a drastically different manner than in bulk in response to an increasing magnetic field. The magnetic properties of alkali-metal peroxychromate K$_2$NaCrO$_8$ are governed by the $S = 1/2$ pentavalent chromium cation, Cr$^{5+}$. Specific heat, magnetocalorimetry, ac magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, and inelastic neutron scattering data have been acquired over a wide range of temperature, down to 60 mK, and magnetic field, up to 18 T. The magnetic interactions are quasi-two-dimensional prior to long-range ordering, where $T_N = 1.66$ K in $H = 0$. In the $T \to 0$ limit, the magnetic field tuned antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition suggests a critical field $H_c = 7.270$ T and a critical exponent $\alpha = 0.481 \pm 0.004$. The neutron data indicate the magnetic interactions may extend over intra-planar nearest-neighbors and inter-planar next-nearest-neighbor spins., Comment: 6 pages, with 7 figures and 1 table included

Specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, spanning low temperatures ($T \geq 40$ mK) and high magnetic fields ($B \leq 14$ T), have been performed on a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnet Cu(tn)Cl$_{2}$ (tn = C$_{3}$H$_{10}$N$_{2}$). The compound represents an $S = 1/2$ spatially anisotropic triangular magnet realized by a square lattice with nearest-neighbor ($J/k_{B} = 3$ K), frustrating next-nearest-neighbor ($0 < J^{\prime}/J < 0.6$), and interlayer ($|J^{\prime \prime}/J| \approx 10^{-3}$) interactions. The absence of long-range magnetic order down to $T = $ 60 mK in $B = 0$ and the $T^{2}$ behavior of the specific heat for $T \leq 0.4$ K and $B \geq 0$ are considered evidence of high degree of 2D magnetic order. In fields lower than the saturation field, $B_{\text{sat}} = 6.6$ T, a specific heat anomaly, appearing near 0.8 K, is ascribed to bound vortex-antivortex pairs stabilized by the applied magnetic field. The resulting magnetic phase diagram is remarkably consistent with the one predicted for the ideal square lattice, except that $B_{\text{sat}}$ is shifted to values lower than expected. Potential explanations for this observation, as well as the possibility of a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in a spatially anisotropic triangular magnet with the N\'{e}el ground state, are discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to determine the spin Hamiltonian for the singlet ground state system of fully deuterated BPCB, (C$_{5}$D$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$. A 2-leg spin-1/2 ladder model, with $J_\bot = (1.09 \pm 0.01)$ meV and $J_\| = (0.296 \pm 0.005)$ meV, accurately describes the data. The experimental limit on the effective inter-ladder exchange constant is $|J_{\rm int}^{\rm eff}|\lesssim 0.006$ meV, and the limit on total diagonal, intra-ladder exchange is $|J_F+J_{F'}|\leq 0.1$ meV. Including the effects of copper to bromide covalent spin transfer on the magnetic form-factor, the experimental ratios of intra-ladder bond energies are consistent with the predictions of continuous unitary transformation., Comment: 10 pages, with 11 figures

We have performed longitudinal ultrasound (9.5 MHz) attenuation measurements in the B-phase of superfluid $^3$He in 98% porosity aerogel down to the zero temperature limit for a wide range of pressures at zero magnetic field. The absolute attenuation was determined by direct transmission of sound pulses. Compared to the bulk fluid, our results revealed a drastically different behavior in attenuation, which is consistent with theoretical accounts with gapless excitations and a collision drag effect., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Nanoparticles of rubidium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (Rb$_j$Co$_k$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$_l \cdot n$H$_2$O) were synthesized using different concentrations of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to produce four different batches of particles with characteristic diameters ranging from 3 to 13 nm. Upon illumination with white light at 5 K, the magnetization of these particles increases. The long-range ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures and the coercive fields evolve with nanoparticle size. A magneto-optically active thin film of Rb$_{j}$Co$_{k}$[Fe(CN)$_{6}$]$_{l}$ $\cdot$$n$H$_{2}$O has been prepared using a sequential assembly method. Upon irradiation with light and at 5 K, the net magnetization of the film increased when the surface of the film was oriented parallel to the external magnetic field of 0.1 T. However, when the surface of the film was perpendicular to the field, the net magnetization \emph{decreased} upon irradiation. The presence of dipolar fields and the low-dimensional nature of the system are used to describe the orientation dependence of the photo-induced magnetization. The ability to increase or decrease the photo-induced magnetization by changing the orientation of the system with respect to the field is a new phenomenon that may be useful in future device applications., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Experimental and numerical studies of the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat and magnetization of single crystals of CsNiF3 have been performed at 2.4 K, 2.9 K, and 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 9 T oriented perpendicular to the easy plane. The experimental results confirm the presence of the theoretically predicted double peak structure in the specific heat arising from the formation of nonlinear spin modes. The demagnetizing effects are found to be negligible, and the overall agreement between the data and numerical predictions is better than reported for the case when the magnetic field was oriented in the easy plane. Demagnetizing effects might play a role in generating the difference observed between theory and experiment in previous work analyzing the excess specific heat using the sine-Gordon model., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. The thermodynamic and magnetic properties of MnCl3(C12H8N2), have been studied down to 2 K. The material is an S = 2 antiferromagnetic linear chain that undergoes long-range ordering to a canted antiferromagnetic state at 23 K. The comparison of magnetic data from polycrystalline samples with the results of specific heat measurements using a pressed pellet of powder reveals the importance of the length of the chains in the sample in relation to the magnetic correlation length.

The magnetization of a thin Fe-Co cyanide film has been investigated from 5 K to 300 K and in fields up to 500 G. Upon illumination with visible light, the magnetization of the film rapidly increases. Using a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) synthesis method, novel two-dimensional (2D) mixed-spin magnetic systems, in which each magnetic layer is both structurally and magnetically isolated, have been generated. Specifically, a 2D Fe-Ni cyanide-bridged network with a face-centered square grid structure has been magnetically and structurally characterized. ESR studies at 9.27, 95.4, and 289.7 GHz have been performed on (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ down to 3.7 K. The 9.27 GHz data were acquired with a single crystal and do not indicate the presence of any structural transitions. The high frequency data were collected with a polycrystalline sample and resolved two absorbances, consistent with two crystallographic orientations of the magnetic sites and with earlier ESR studies performed at 300 K. The magnetization, $M(H \leq 30$ T, 0.7 K $\leq T \leq 300$ K), from single crystals and powder samples of (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ has been used to identify this system as an $S=1/2$ Heisenberg two-leg ladder in the strong coupling limit, $J_{\perp} = 13.3$ K and $J_{\parallel} = 3.8$ K, with $H_{c1} = 6.6$ T and $H_{c2} = 14.6$ T. An inflection point in $M(H, T = 0.7$ K) at half-saturation, $M_{s}/2$, is described by an effective \emph{XXZ} chain. The data exhibit universal scaling behavior in the vicinity of $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$, indicating the system is near a quantum critical point., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Electron spin resonance (ESR), at 9, 94, and 190 GHz, and magnetization studies on polycrystalline, powder, and ultrafine powder samples of Ni(C3H10N2)2N3(ClO4) (NINAZ) have revealed several effects arising from the Haldane phase. Using the g value of the end-chain spin $S$ as determined by ESR, our results confirm that the end-chain spins are S=1/2 and show no evidence for S=1 end-chains. In addition, the ESR signals reveal spectral weight consistent with a model describing interactions between the end-chain spins on the shortest chains and between the magnetic excitations on the chains and the end-chain spins., Comment: Paper revised with additional data, to be published in Physical Review B

The magnetic susceptibility of the $S = 2$ quasi-linear chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet (2,$2'$-bipyridine)trichloromanganese(III), MnCl_{3}(bipy), has been measured from 1.8 to 300 K with the magnetic field, H, parallel and perpendicular to the chains. The analyzed data yield $g\approx 2$ and $J\approx 35$ K. The magnetization, M, has been studied at 30 mK and 1.4 K in H up to 16 T. No evidence of long-range order is observed. Depending on crystal orientation, $M\approx 0$ at 30 mK until a critical field is achieved ($H_{c\|} = 1.2\pm 0.2 T$ and $H_{c\bot} = 1.8\pm 0.2 T), where M increases continuously as H is increased.
